- 0:00Welcome back to every day in Sestrel. I'm your host James Berry and I cannot imagine a more special episode
- 0:07Not only is this our end of the year episode, but this is our
- 0:12premier
- 0:14episode where I'm introducing you to the one and only
- 0:17Margaret Floyd Berry not only my wife, but an extremely talented writer
- 0:23practitioner and human being and I hope this is the first of many guest appearances
- 0:30But I just thought you know really you're the one that gave me this idea because you did a
- 0:34What did you call this solo cast?
- 0:37Yes, I recorded my very first solo cast this week
- 0:41Yeah, so so you did a solo cast where you just kind of talked about the year and all that and I was like, you know
- 0:47That's a really good idea because I really love that. I mean you and I have been doing that with each other since we first met where we
- 0:54talk, you know, we just kind of at the end of the year always check in and
- 0:59Set intentions for the new year and so I thought well, why don't we do that with every day in Sestrel so to that point to that end
- 1:06Let's talk about
- 1:08first
- 1:09Our year, you know, I think this has been a monumental year and it's funny even though we didn't move
- 1:17Officially at the top of the year it feels like we did because to give context in
- 1:232022 the summer of 2020
- 1:26Summer of 2023, okay, sorry summer of 2023
- 1:31We moved from the West Coast organ Portland organ to Massachusetts to noon Massachusetts and we moved into a house that
- 1:40Was really like not how we it was presented like it was a lemon in every sense of the word like we got
- 1:48What we learned this year we got mold from it. I mean like it's just
- 1:52Well, it flooded every single the basement flooded every single time it rained and last fall for anybody who was in the Boston area
- 2:00Who knows that we had record amounts of rain? So it was it was really foul our youngest daughter
- 2:06Sasha called it the house with the cracks or the broken house those were the two ways that she referred to it
- 2:12because even like the paint was peeling off the walls and
- 2:17It was an Airbnb a long-term Airbnb and the stuffing was coming out of the seat cushions in the dining room chairs
- 2:24Like literally rips with in stuffing coming out. It just I mean the whole thing
- 2:29janky and
- 2:31Gross we could you just kind of if we've ever been in an Airbnb that you kind of just don't want to touch anything
- 2:36Imagine living there for five months. Yeah, it was really not good
- 2:40But so we we fortunately were able to move pretty you know a few months. We were there
- 2:45What was that three months, I guess and five were there?
- 2:49We didn't until the end of the year, but we did move you say we didn't move we didn't move January one
- 2:54We moved into this place. Yeah, so I moved January one so very much 2024 felt like oh, we we finally are in
- 3:02Boston area we're in Massachusetts and
- 3:05It was quite the year. I mean it was a beautiful year of establishing
- 3:11Contact with some amazing people that we hope will continue to flourish. It was a
- 3:17Time of establishing the kids with their friends in school and
- 3:22Routines, you know you you joined running groups
- 3:26We found a gym and yet there was still also a lot of hardship
- 3:31Do you want to talk about some of the things since a lot of them seem to land on you?
- 3:35I mean, but of course I was affected deeply by all of them
- 3:39Well, can actually we reverse back before we talk about the hardship because there was actually I feel like there was a
- 3:46Marker point at least for me personally and it also kind of felt like for the family at kind of the midpoint of the year
- 3:52Where it was actually very
- 3:54celebratory and awesome and it was like from then that point on that things like I think about this year
- 4:00And I think of a sort of a first half and a second half and the first half
- 4:04I think of it as this like fun
- 4:07Exciting progression where we started off in this new home
- 4:11Which is not a forever home, but it is a massive step up from where we were living before and I think
- 4:17All of us felt this huge sigh of relief of like like the other place is the kind of place you never wanted to take your shoes off
- 4:25And like it's hard to describe how gross the whole thing felt like you showered and you were kind of like
- 4:30I don't know which is worse staying dirty or being naked in this shower like it was that kind of a decision that you made with everything
- 4:37It was so awful and we also most of our stuff was in storage thank goodness because it would have all been contaminated by mold
- 4:43but we
- 4:44Moved into this new place is lots of light. It's really clean and you're like not only
- 4:51Feel comfortable taking off your shoes. You want to take off your shoes because it's just like it's clean
- 4:55It's beautiful. It's not it's not our forever perfect home
- 4:57But it was a just gigantic leap up so that felt so great and the kids were really starting to
- 5:03You know, they're making their friends and they're building their communities and we are making our friends and like really building our communities and
- 5:12for me this really culminated in my 50th birthday which happened on June 1st and
- 5:19Where I ran 50 miles to celebrate my 50th birthday and that probably sounds crazy to a lot of people
- 5:27It's not that crazy if you know my personality
- 5:29I'm sort of this really celebrate doing hard things. I love challenging myself physically and seeing how far I can go and setting goals that seem
- 5:37Completely impossible and then just chipping away at the progress to then
- 5:43Achieve them and it was I mean, I don't know how deep you want to go into that we don't have to make this all the Margaret show
- 5:48But it was definitely a huge moment for me to run
- 5:51That far almost double what I've ever run before and to enjoy
- 5:57Most of the process you know when I've run marathons in the past I go dark partway through like I guide to I start questioning life
- 6:04I start questioning all my life choices like I think a lot of people wonder why I run marathon because it you know
- 6:11Somewhere between mile. Well, it depends race to race somewhere in there
- 6:14I start to just hate every single step and that is not like a
- 6:19That's not a fun process. Whereas this one. I definitely had hard moments
- 6:22But I never went dark and I enjoyed the whole process. It was really
- 6:27It was just this celebration of the city that I love this running route that I love
- 6:33Some of my favorite humans on planet earth flew into town and supported me on and and we're running or biking with me
- 6:39It was just it was wonderful and one it was the one of the really cool things is that a few days later
- 6:44I couldn't feel it in my body
- 6:47And for anyone who's done distance running, you know, you run a marathon
- 6:50You feel that thing in your body for like at least a week if not a couple like two three weeks after
- 6:56And it was actually almost alarming how much I didn't feel it in my body like I was just so well trained
- 7:02And I think I did it from such the right perspective meaning I wasn't out to prove anything other than like I can do this
- 7:08But I wasn't trying to like I didn't need a finisher's medal. I didn't need some specific time on the clock
- 7:14Even my time I had a time goal just to sort of
- 7:17Guestimate you know things like how much food I would need and how long people needed to stay like all sorts of things like that
- 7:23But it wasn't a hard time and I did come in 30 minutes faster than it even with you know taking sitting breaks and things like that
- 7:29So it was this fantastic accomplishment and I felt great right after it
- 7:33So that felt like that was this like midpoint this total high
- 7:38In in the year and then things turned and then yeah, and then you got the call
- 7:43I mean not to go to
- 7:44Two in the weeds with it, but you got the call of potential melanoma cancer on your leg
- 7:50It wasn't potential. It was confirmed. Well, yeah, I mean it wasn't it wasn't a it didn't it hadn't metastasis
- 7:56Yeah, we didn't know how exactly and then and then we
- 8:01We kind of got through that process so over the because it was how long was it until you actually had the surgery
- 8:06Was that a month or two? It was two months, which was a long time
- 8:11Yeah, so it's two months of just sitting in okay
- 8:14What's possibly gonna happen but of course we weren't just waiting? We you know you immediately kicked in to going to
- 8:22Cautiesis do I say Cautiesis Coteira and say wait to hear about it's all the rage. Yeah, Coteira
- 8:30No, um ketosis
- 8:32I think this is was a big learner for me around the cancer scare and I really liked how
- 8:39The perspective that I gained from that from that experience and I'll say what how I experience or or the perspective and then you kind of
- 8:47Trying man if you have a different one or
- 8:50but basically that
- 8:52we all have
- 8:53Cancer cells in us
- 8:55But what makes the difference between someone who has cancer and someone who
- 9:00Doesn't is that those cells are not activated so they it's the environment our internal environment that's going to potentially activate those cancer cells
- 9:08And so any cancer diagnosis should immediately be followed by
- 9:13Efforts towards changing that internal environment so you know how you what you're eating
- 9:19Your stress levels your sleep, you know and ketosis is
- 9:25Been shown to be very effective with basically starving the cancer cells. Is that correct?
- 9:31Yeah, there's several different mechanisms and I will be honest that I don't I I'm not the expert in cancer
- 9:37But definitely the ketogenic diet has been shown to have significant benefits
- 9:43I mean for one metabolically it shifts things very significantly and
- 9:47Will reduces reliance on carbohydrates quite significantly and there are there's the benefit of like not having the glucose circulating
- 9:55High levels of glucose circulating which can feed the cancer cells, but it's also
- 9:59There are protective benefits from the ketones themselves. So it's not just about being low carb
- 10:04It's also some of the protective aspects of the ketones themselves. So I remember when I first got the diagnosis
- 10:11I
- 10:12Immediately thought okay, well, I've been on a bit of a carb party because I've been running 50 you know doing these incredibly long training runs
- 10:19And so I thought well dramatically drop that in talking with a friend of mine who specializes in cancer
- 10:25She was like yeah, no you go into ketosis and you do it now because it's not just about bringing down the glucose in this and the carbs
- 10:31It's about the therapeutic benefit of those ketones and I think one of the things I learned in this is you know as a nutrition professional
- 10:39I have played around with pretty much every dietary paradigm. There is and on multiple occasions
- 10:45I've tried to get into ketosis. It's it's a diet that's out there
- 10:50I work with it therapeutically with certain clients and I wanted to have the experience of it so that I could be a better support to them
- 10:56And every time historically that I have tried to get into ketosis
- 11:00I have just my body has rebelled
- 11:03You know we talk about the keto flu and how you know, it can be a brutal few days or week or two and then you get it to the other side
- 11:10And I never was able to get to the other side historically when I had tried this and I did all the things I
- 11:16You know taking the electrolytes and like I mean I was being very intentional with it
- 11:20I was doing the right things to mitigate the impacts of that keto flu
- 11:24And it just didn't matter it didn't matter if I went into quickly if I went nice and slowly
- 11:27It's just like my body was like no the difference this time
- 11:31You know and I remember thinking oh my gosh, I have to go into ketosis a great like this is gonna kind of suck
- 11:37Except this time it happened
- 11:40Immediately it was like almost overnight. I slept into ketosis and within two days
- 11:45I'm ahead almost no symptoms
- 11:46I was a little fatigued and my brain felt a little extra foggy for a day or two as it just sort of switched fuel sources
- 11:53But you know, I was checking my key tones on the daily for the first few weeks
- 11:58And I slipped right into really solid levels and it felt like almost effortlessly
- 12:03And I was like oh my body knows exactly what it needs right now
- 12:07And what it needs is to be in ketosis and so it's gonna make it
- 12:11Really easy for me whereas in those other times it wasn't what I needed
- 12:15For me, now I'm always talking about the bio individuality of diet and how
- 12:20There's no such thing as one right diet for everybody and there's no such thing as one right diet for you for your entire life
- 12:26Like your needs are going to change along with what's going on for you physiologically
- 12:31What's going on for you in your life what your health goals are your training goals like there's so many different variables
- 12:36And it was just this very blatant example of how
- 12:40Our bodies really do have some powerful innate wisdom and that when we can tap into it and listen to it
- 12:47Then it will really tell us if we're on course or not with a given strategy
- 12:53That was quite the process and and where it led us of course
- 12:56So so not only were we sitting in two months of kind of like oh is a week gonna get
- 13:02Really bad news when you go for that surgery or is this gonna be tied with a bow
- 13:08What was it like a week later? I mean it didn't feel that long then my father died
- 13:14Yeah, remember that was a very intense week Monday. I had my surgery
- 13:19Friday our kids came home from camp after being gone for the summer and the Sunday your father died
- 13:26It was a really big hard week
- 13:28Gosh it makes me like even just thinking about the period
- 13:32I can tell I have a little post-traumatic stress because it was just so intense
- 13:36The lead up to your surgery
- 13:39Elation seeing the kids and then getting that call that night
- 13:44And then what a week later your your uncle died
- 13:48It wasn't quite that fast, but it was you know a week later
- 13:52I got the phone call that he was not doing well and likely not gonna make it for much longer
- 13:57So I while you I think we're still away. I did a quick trip
- 14:02Down to Texas to spend just a day with him
- 14:06To say goodbye, which was very I'm very very glad that I did even though it was
- 14:11Hard and you know it's an inconvenience from a logistical perspective
- 14:15It was absolutely worth it because a few weeks later he did pass
- 14:19Yeah, and yet
- 14:21You know when we were talking when people would ask how's it going?
- 14:23I'd be like oh it's a shit show, but there's so much
- 14:27To be grateful for you know the entire time I never lost sight with how much
- 14:32gratitude I felt for our family unit
- 14:36For the friends and the the people that we're reaching out and supporting and and then of course for what we have
- 14:44You know, we're just so lucky you know to have everything we do and I I think ultimately that is what this this is about today is just to
- 14:53In the year with you know that sense of gratitude and then what's to come?
- 14:59You know what what do we what do we focus you know in 2025 and I think we've already started to see some really big themes pop up
- 15:06For 2025 and there's even something I want to share with you that you don't even know yet
- 15:10I'm announcing it on the air
- 15:13Before I do that
- 15:15What are some things that you're kind of as the year comes an end that you're feeling grateful for?
- 15:20So when I there's so many different things that I am grateful for
- 15:25I mean the most important things is our our family unit and I feel like each one of us has had our own personal struggles
- 15:32But it's like busting through them and growing stronger because of them and not letting them sort of take us out
- 15:39You know watching our daughters find the things that are they're really passionate about and leaning into those things and letting go of things that either
- 15:47They are we thought they quote unquote should be passionate about and trying to drive them in a certain direction
- 15:52Just letting them really find their true callings and in sore and that
- 15:57Like the family unit that we are to me is like one of the most
- 16:00powerful and and beautiful things in our lives and not to me comes absolutely first before anything else
- 16:06I'm so grateful that we took the plunge and made this bold move cross country
- 16:11Kind of into the unknown people always ask both of us. I think well why Boston? Why did you move? Oh did a job bring you here
- 16:18We don't have this like easy single sentence answer to wrap it all up nicely with the bow and know our jobs
- 16:24Did not bring us here because we're both self-employed and can work from anywhere
- 16:28So it was that our our work we have crafted a life that allows us to go anywhere and
- 16:33And so we took advantage of that and took a plunge and followed an instinct and I think it was a really good
- 16:40Really good instinct
- 16:42I'm really grateful
- 16:44We didn't get to the next thing that happened for me
- 16:46But I had a major knee injury at the gym in the middle of all of this
- 16:52Nothing to do with the 50 mile run
- 16:54I just need to say that out loud everyone things runners have bannies and it really they're completely unrelated
- 16:59But I I dislocated my left patella and tors and ligaments in the process and so was on crutches and I I do not like not being able to move like
- 17:10Literally was like life took me out by the knees and sat my ass down on a couch and was like
- 17:17I'm gonna take away all of your escape mechanisms all of your stress management mechanisms
- 17:24And you're just gonna like come face-to-face with yourself and see how that feels
- 17:29And how do I feel? Oh, I hated every minute of it
- 17:34I hated it so
- 17:37Oh my goodness. I don't even know if I can articulate what I saw
- 17:41But I did well, I what I really did see is this constant pattern, you know
- 17:45I'm a really ambitious person
- 17:47I love big goals. I mean the fact that I ran 50 miles to celebrate my 50th birthday
- 17:52Well, you know other friends of mine who are celebrating their 50th are like
- 17:56Going to Fiji or like you know they're doing these like fun relaxing exotic trips and here I am like doing this like crazy
- 18:03Physical accomplishment. It showed me a tendency to
- 18:07Overcommit it showed me a tendency to never stop moving and
- 18:13Little overcommit a lot of overcommit
- 18:15That I really I love running and I will go back to running very soon hopefully
- 18:20But I I cannot use it to replace actually sitting in a space and coming like coming face-to-face with my own stuff
- 18:29I can't keep running away from it. I guess that's what I'm saying and so I have now had the opportunity to kind of
- 18:35Sit in my stuff and look at what is working for me
- 18:39But also what really hasn't worked from or what really can't continue to work for me because I would I'm a firm believer that
- 18:45Even though we have these patterns that might no longer serve us at one point
- 18:49They really did serve us otherwise we wouldn't adopt them
- 18:51so
- 18:52My ability to sort of
- 18:54Work myself into the ground and run myself into the ground is not something that I want to continue to do
- 19:01But it's yielded some pretty amazing things and I celebrate that while I also release that part of myself
- 19:07I've been thinking a lot about the changes that I'm making as I step into 2025 and thinking of them less as
- 19:13I'm thinking of them as a graduation. It's like they served as incredible purpose and I've outground them
- 19:18And it's time to move on to the next thing as opposed to
- 19:21You know judging them as it would be very easy to sit here and judge myself for the things that I have
- 19:28Done or not done
- 19:30You know
- 19:31That are no longer working for me that used to work. I can beat myself up for that or I could just thank my tendencies and habits
- 19:39And let go of what's not longer serving and move into new things. Well, I think that's the theme for both of us
- 19:45I mean and and from a few people we know
- 19:49That concept of what got us here which we want to honor right you want to honor what got us here
- 19:55Will not get us where we're going and so there is a shedding
- 19:59something that I am really
- 20:03wanting to shed is
- 20:06Kind of pursuit I've had for so many years now and I think it's been about I mean it's it started when we were in
- 20:14Portland
- 20:15Where I was just actively trying to achieve physical goals, you know health goals that
- 20:22That I that I've been wanting to achieve my whole life really and I feel like I so I'm either at this place where I'm
- 20:30I'm either not as disciplined as I think I am
- 20:34You know and I was talking to someone the other day. I was like oh maybe I'm
- 20:38Maybe what it is is that I'm I'm maybe more disciplined than
- 20:42You know a certain percentage of the work of the population around me
- 20:47For myself if I don't compare myself. I just look at my own bodies needs or my own chemical needs
- 20:53It's like I'm not disciplined for what I need, you know, so that I need to fine tune even more than I think I do
- 21:00and
- 21:01That's possible
- 21:02But either way, I've been I feel like I've been kind of up against the wall for a long time and not seeing the gains that I want to see
- 21:09So as you know, I've been kind of like talking to different experts trainers and all that kind of stuff and
- 21:16Trying to figure out which one was gonna be right for me and I ended up going with my friend who you also know Billy
- 21:22Billy Bosch from frontier. So he is a trainer
- 21:26That he works with that's virtual and I and I had a meeting with him
- 21:30You say and I I committed I'm doing it. It's a 16 week program and
- 21:36His whole business is built off referrals. So it's like what he does is you know works, you know
- 21:42And he makes sure it works and it's very individualized. So I'm I'm
- 21:46Visually starting. I just filled out the stuff and I paid and I'm all I'm all in
- 21:51And then I also recently did a lot of my blood markers and we're you know working with a new functional doctor as well as you know and
- 21:59like I just feel like I'm I'm
- 22:02Building the team and as you know
- 22:06Sometimes I can get very cheap about that and I you know and in this kind of stems to another issue that
- 22:13Got me here, but it's not gonna get me there and this is a big one
- 22:16Which is and I don't maybe you you know a better way to word it
- 22:19But like that I haven't been paying myself
- 22:22What I should be and what I you know and based on you know the business is doing well and very grateful for
- 22:29Any any supporters of pluck that are listening or of my own journey anyone that's supporting that I'm very grateful to you
- 22:36It's really feeling the love and
- 22:40Feeling the effects of how pluck is affecting people's lives
- 22:44I mean I'm hearing and I'm receiving that and I'm taking that in and it's
- 22:49Incredibly moving
- 22:50But I now need to kind of value that in myself more and so I've already taken steps to do that and
- 22:59I think it's really good because it's also
- 23:02That's been putting a lot of weight on your shoulders all these years, you know as we let my business kind of
- 23:09Grow and get to a place where it could pay me appropriately and hopefully my my stepping more into this is going to release some of that
- 23:17burden from you
- 23:18Which you've carried for so long and I know it's been a part of our conversation
- 23:23You know like it's really interesting you know like so we'll go to these like entrepreneurial events or
- 23:29Retreats and there'll be all these Titans of their business, you know just very successful people
- 23:35And it's mostly men's group and they'll all look at me and think that I'm the
- 23:40Bread winner or the person that's you know rocking it and it's like
- 23:45Nope, it's been Margaret this whole time like she's the one that's been
- 23:50Running two to three businesses seven figure plus businesses, you know things like that like just doing so
- 23:58much
- 24:00Output and work since really since Sasha was born
- 24:04That was eight years ago because that's when so what happened was
- 24:08I had a business and meal delivery service in LA that I we had moved from LA and I have sold and the deal
- 24:16Like they were paying me and then they just stopped paying me and I probably could have sued them
- 24:21We had just had Sasha at the time our second child
- 24:25We just moved I mean
- 24:27There was so much going on and I was so like depleted and done and that's kind of why I didn't sue them because I just didn't want
- 24:36I didn't want to take on another burden at the time because it just felt like my own health was suffering
- 24:41We had a new baby and
- 24:44You your business was starting to pop and you were like well, we'll just I'm just gonna dig into this
- 24:49And then you you be the state home dad and I was like okay, and we did that
- 24:53And then we kind of fell into that role for a very long time
- 24:56But that's also during the time I got the idea for pluck which you also supported that direction
- 25:03you continue to
- 25:05grow and
- 25:07Build your business took on another business grow and built that and where we
- 25:13The main earner all those eight years
- 25:17It's huge
- 25:18I'm getting a little teary-eyed right now. I'll be honest
- 25:21I just thank you for the acknowledgement is it's been a lot
- 25:26It's been a lot of what I have you know, I certainly signed up for it too, but I think
- 25:32To your original point. I think it's really important
- 25:36Regardless of the financial dynamic between the two of us
- 25:39I think it's really important for you and for anyone else who's listening to this who runs their own business
- 25:45To value yourself
- 25:47appropriately within that business
- 25:50I think that it sends really important energetic signals if nothing else that you're gonna take care of this
- 25:57I think a lot of
- 25:58Entrepreneurs will sacrifice themselves for the for the business, you know, and we hear about the big successful journeys and we don't see the
- 26:07You know
- 26:08Late nights in the blood sweat and tears and all of the stuff that went into that and the often years and years of like kind of almost killing themselves to make it happen
- 26:17and I don't know that it has to be that way
- 26:20I don't know that any of us want it to be that way and I think that
- 26:25For it to be truly sustainable
- 26:27It needs to be something that fills you not depletes you and there's different ways for it to fill you
- 26:33And I've watched it fill you over these last few years like just watching people
- 26:38Learned to eat organ meats and and go from it factor to like oh wow this eating it this way is absolutely delicious watching kids
- 26:47Have their their palettes expanded, you know from picky eaters who or don't want to eat anything to start introducing this and then suddenly
- 26:55You get the emails back about like oh my gosh my child just ate this right that and there they're starting to expand their palette
- 27:01Like I know it has filled you up in these other ways
- 27:04And and I think this is you know
- 27:06I get a little bit on on a soapbox about this when I'm supporting other practitioners because
- 27:12A lot of health practitioners especially in the functional space especially you know
- 27:16I work with a lot of functional nutritionists those are my my people right and not all of them
- 27:21But a lot of them find it really hard to value themselves and value their work and charge what they're worth
- 27:26And I think that we talk a lot about self-care in this industry and we talk about
- 27:31We think of self-care is eating the right foods going to bed on time hitting the gym meditating journaling
- 27:37And those are great and part of that self-care is financial self-care
- 27:42It's taking care of ourselves and and rewarding ourselves and compensating ourselves appropriately
- 27:50And not sending this constant message of like everything else's worth investment except me
- 27:56That creates such a wild imbalance. I don't think it's sustainable
- 28:01And I don't think it's accurate
- 28:03It's not reflective of the reality of the business
- 28:05But then it starts to become reflective of the reality of the business right like you start to manifest that reality
- 28:10And I just I think it requires a real
- 28:14A real paradigm shift to to recognize your value and your worth and to take care of yourself in that way
- 28:20As the business owner and I'm speaking to you
- 28:22But I'm also speaking to anyone who's listening who is undervaluing themselves in their business right now
- 28:27Yes, and there are multiple layers to how this plays out and
- 28:34The health industry is a major culprit of this whereas
- 28:38It's rare that I meet a practitioner someone in the health field
- 28:43Who's trying to help others whose own health is is not suffering
- 28:47Yeah, you know, and that's what I was when I had wholesome to go. So there's very much kind of like a
- 28:53Yes, we we need to honor ourselves financially. We need to honor our journeys, you know our process, you know
- 28:59But in general, it just feels like we have to be might like it helps to be mindful
- 29:04Just like we talk about even with our marriage like you know, it's it's a choice every day
- 29:08It's not like you just do it and then it's okay. This is done. So I'll move on to the other
- 29:13Things I have to focus on or my other goals. It's like no
- 29:16It's a choice every day that in your work on it every day
- 29:19I feel like that mindfulness is really also needs to be present, you know
- 29:25In our I want to say our businesses, but really our mission, you know
- 29:29Like it's mindful mission because our businesses are a mission and our mission is our business
- 29:34And that's one thing yet another thing to be incredibly grateful for right we we are literally doing
- 29:41The things that we are passionate about and not everyone can say that
- 29:46All right, so going in 2025 we just talked about what what got us here is not going to get us there
- 29:52So what are some things that you're being mindful of going into 2025 for yourself?
- 29:58Well number one in the
- 30:01commitment space
- 30:03I am looking very carefully at everything that I do and
- 30:08Stopping doing things that are not either on mission or not really you know
- 30:13I'm trying to get very focused in terms of what my goals are and how I spend my time
- 30:18So stopping doing anything that's not specifically within that and
- 30:23really
- 30:24Empowering my team to step up and take really full ownership for their parts of the business there
- 30:31I am surrounded by an incredible team. They're phenomenal. I feel like they take I am very privileged a lot of business owners with their teams
- 30:39It's it's constantly trying to get them excited and on mission and I'm a philic sometimes there my team is
- 30:45Even more on mission and and so aware of what we were trying to create in this world
- 30:50They're as committed to it as I am and I think that's a really fortunate place to be and I just want to give them even more
- 30:55Opportunity to run with that and to flourish. I've just read Dan Martell's book buy back your time
- 31:01And he talks about the sort of the thing that got us as entrepreneurs to where we are
- 31:07Especially at the beginning of the journey is the ability to he is the GSD to get shit done
- 31:13And and I am really freaking good at getting shit done like I am a superhero a getting shit done
- 31:18And yet it's my variability to get shit done that is getting in the way of the businesses progress
- 31:23Not only my progress, but the businesses progress because things get bottlenecked with me because while I'm really good at getting shit done
- 31:29I'm still just one person and so it's really about examining everything that I take on and really am I the best person to do this
- 31:36I'm on the only person who can do this
- 31:38I've just you know delegated my right-hand woman is now managing my inbox and my calendar
- 31:44Which is like a whole new world I realize how much I was just like living in reactive space as opposed to
- 31:50consciously creating big buckets of time to be thinking about the business working on the business
- 31:56So that is a they've created systems to enable that because it's one thing to say that and to know it
- 32:01And I've been paying a lip service to this for years
- 32:03But actually doing it on the day to day is a totally different thing
- 32:06And then on a personal level for me, you know this
- 32:10This knee injury, I guess I should say physical level the knee injury and the cancer were two major wake-up calls
- 32:18So just taking even
- 32:20better care of myself physically and that doesn't you know
- 32:24I'm already you know in terms of my diet and sleep and all these things like I do the things
- 32:28It's not that I haven't done the things
- 32:30I think it's being gentler with myself and not pushing myself too far on other things
- 32:35So that the physical self like I just as she just read an incredible book that I honestly think everybody should read
- 32:41It's a should be required reading it was recommended to me alongside that Dan Martell book
- 32:46It's called bumpers by Nick Peterson. I've got it right here. It blew my mind
- 32:51And it's like a whole different way of living
- 32:53I can't articulate it yet because I feel like I needed to read it three more times to just like really understand the concepts
- 32:58But I'm building my quote-unquote bumpers so that I can you know make sure for example
- 33:05One of my bumpers is that I will not take on anything that's going to compromise my sleep or my health
- 33:10That's not the baseline
- 33:12That's the bit that's a bumper like if it's going to compromise one or other of those things
- 33:15So that's going to influence things as minimal or as seemingly in the consequential as what flights I choose
- 33:21To
- 33:22Decisions about what kind of projects I take on it's going to influence all of those things
- 33:26And you know, and then I think about my knee stuff and I'm like and now I'm using this knee injury as an opportunity to really build
- 33:33I feel like I had to learn how to walk again, you know like I've been really kind of dissecting all of the movements
- 33:40And if I'm going to relearn how to walk I'm going to do this in the house the best way possible
- 33:46That is the most balanced that is the strongest that has the combination of the mobility and the flexibility and the strength and like all of the things
- 33:55I'm recognizing patterns of movement that I have
- 33:58Compensated for even when before this injury that when I was quote-unquote like fully functional and so I'm kind of building back up from the bottom up
- 34:07And taking the opportunity to just get really fricking strong so that when I layer in running
- 34:12I'm doing so with like a kind of a different
- 34:16Biomechanic platform something that's much more optimal because when we learn to walk when we're babies, right?
- 34:21Like it's a little half-hazard
- 34:22And so it you know if it takes an injury the
- 34:25Gives you the opportunity to like relearn it then let's do it right
- 34:29I feel like that's
- 34:30It's very tiger woods. I feel like I always associate him with someone who was you know kind of
- 34:36Very successful top of his game and then at one point though
- 34:40He realized that it it was also limiting him and he he relearned how to do golf
- 34:45And then came back and dominated right and so I feel like you're preparing yourself for
- 34:51Total domination
- 34:53So something also that you did
- 34:55differently this year is you are really
- 34:59Putting an emphasis on taking care like kind of having mama or Margaret time and
- 35:04And instead of just theorizing it talking about it and maybe oh one day this will happen
- 35:11You put it on the calendar. So you don't necessarily know where you're going yet, but it's in the calendar of the days are marked off
- 35:17It's it's prepped. It's it's ready to be visualized now
- 35:22I think that that is a huge
- 35:25New thing you know huge difference from how
- 35:28Either of us have handled you know that
- 35:32That time before oh, yeah, I've been talking with my coach the others
- 35:35Hey, and she said I remember when you were back in LA
- 35:39So this is what like 10 11 12 years ago and she said you you know
- 35:43We finally got you to take an afternoon at the spa
- 35:45And it was so good for you when you did committed to like doing it again
- 35:49But you never did that was like the last time I just blocked off a day just for me and did a thing
- 35:54I've gone on a couple of trips here and there
- 35:56But it's never really been just for me. So yes this year
- 35:59Looking at the calendar we do our big calendaring for the entire next year
- 36:03We did that recently and I realized I hadn't yet put a whole bunch of conferences and yeah all these all the sort of business
- 36:10Travel on the calendar and I realized I can just say I'm gonna take time for myself
- 36:17Or I can look at this calendar right now and put in me time first
- 36:22The business stuff can work around it
- 36:24And that is sending the message kind of like you paying yourself appropriately
- 36:28This is me sending the message of like I need to take care of me
- 36:32The way that I take care of every other person and thing like business and all the other things in my life
- 36:38I need to put me on the calendar. So I literally put me on the calendar for four
- 36:44Four-day retreats this year
- 36:46Which is wild
- 36:49It's a big step
- 36:51Well
- 36:512024 we relocated the ground shifted
- 36:56But now it's time to lay routes to really like I hope for us to buy a home in 2025 because we've been renting now
- 37:04Since we moved from Portland I hope for the kids to you know
- 37:09Route down even more with their friends and those those things that they are passionate about
- 37:15I'm excited you know see and I are gonna go to a jiu jitsu class and
- 37:20What I'm most excited about that is jiu jitsu is something to have been wanting to do for a long time
- 37:25But I'm most excited that we're going to do it to get like we're entering something at the same time at the same
- 37:33beginner level
- 37:34And I remember my dad and I got to do that together when we both learned how to ride motorcycles
- 37:39It just happened that we both learned the exact same year and same time frame
- 37:44And so that was always something that connected us and so I'm looking forward to that
- 37:48And most of all I'm looking forward to those routes of like hey, we are on the east coast. I have to accept this
- 37:56Little West Coast boy
- 37:58Curse boy is you know that's except I am now on the east coast
- 38:03Love it live it
- 38:04Accept it
- 38:05The humidity all of men is still challenging, but I'm just gonna let the roots dig and thicken and grow deeper
- 38:12And really just embrace everything even more you know embraced our community embrace
- 38:19The careers we've chosen embrace each other, you know, we're gonna be scheduling more and more date nights now
- 38:25You know now that we've got some more systems in place and having fun
- 38:29You know like laughing as much as possible
- 38:32I think with all the death that happened in 2024 from ours our own lives from our friends
- 38:38It's like it's just time to find the lighter side of things and to really just bring some laughter and joy
- 38:46Into is mindfully as we're talked about bringing everything else in right to but to be mindful about it because sometimes
- 38:52It's easy to forget so
- 38:55Very excited and I'm very grateful that I'm on this journey with you. I love you
- 39:00I did go down this journey with somebody else when I was younger right in my 20s
- 39:05And now that I have that contrast of
- 39:07Of you and what's possible I could never imagine doing this with anyone else. I feel very much the same way
- 39:16Well, I love you and I'm so grateful to everyone that has listened and or watched
- 39:23Every day ancestral since we launched we're just a baby podcast. We've only been on a few months
- 39:30Marga you have a podcast that is fantastic now it is more geared towards
- 39:35Practitioners, but I got to say like I think
- 39:39Anyone can get something from it truly like
- 39:43It's phenomenal. Do you want to share what it is with everyone? Thank you. So it's called the clinicians corner
- 39:50and I interview thought leaders and
- 39:54practitioners clinicians experts in the space of
- 39:58Functional and holistic health and we do have the conversations from a clinicians perspective
- 40:04But some of the feedback that I've gotten from non clinicians is that they really like it because it helps them understand the thought process
- 40:11And if they are going to DIY it helps them think through some of those
- 40:15Questions because we're not just asking you know if we're talking about a new supplement or a dietary strategy
- 40:22We're talking about it from that global perspective of that clinician thinking like
- 40:27When are we thinking about implementing us with an individual? What are the contraindications are there other things that we need to be mindful of are there
- 40:33Things we want to stack with this to enhance the benefits of this
- 40:38How do we work with it most effectively in different client populations and so we found that people really really love hearing kind
- 40:46It's a little bit like listening to you know your practitioner chat with other practitioners
- 40:51I mean, that's basically what it is listening into the to those conversations
- 40:55So you get a whole different layer of understanding on the topic
- 40:58So it's been really fun. It's an absolute labor of love for me now
- 41:01I launched it and well, I've been doing these interviews for several years
- 41:04But we launched it formally as a podcast in June of this year
- 41:09I was another highlight of this year and I think we're at episode like 33 or 34 now
- 41:14So still at the beginning of the journey as well, but um and you
- 41:18The very famous chef James Berry appeared on it just a few weeks ago. I discuss I heard it broke the internet that
- 41:26People are listening
- 41:28I mean, I'm really excited because 2025 could be of course we don't know for sure, but could be a big year
- 41:34Of just cracking open how we look at
- 41:39Medicare like how we look at our health care system and bringing in more functional practitioners and bringing in more holistic care
- 41:47So it could be an incredibly
- 41:50just
- 41:51Right bright year for bringing different perspective of health
- 41:55And I'm always telling people like if you are looking for someone you should go to the restorative wellness solutions
- 42:02Website because the people that come out of your program are
- 42:07phenomenal they're they're they're what people
- 42:10Dub miracle workers, but as you and they know it's not a miracle. You're just doing
- 42:18You're doing what you've been taught and you're looking at the body and health from a specific lens
- 42:25But it feels like it's a miracle when you compare it to what most people are experiencing
- 42:30In their health care system. So definitely people should go to the website if you're curious or
- 42:36Where else can they just reach out to you or someone just if they have I mean, so the practitioner website
- 42:42This is called restorative wellness solutions.com. That's a great place
- 42:45If you are a practitioner and you want to learn some amazing tools to get really exceptional results with your clients
- 42:51Then that we do that's what we do is practitioner training
- 42:54You do need to be a practitioner already
- 42:56It's not someone starting from the ground from ground zero
- 42:59You need to already be either certified or licensed as a practitioner of some sort
- 43:03But if you're looking for a practitioner then we have a find a practitioner page
- 43:07And yes, I our training program is really I am a product of the program as much as I am a proponent of it
- 43:13You know, I took the very first class back in 2014 and it completely changed my life both professionally and personally
- 43:19And that's why I'm here doing this work training others in this same methodology is because
- 43:24It really as you say use the word miracle
- 43:26I don't like that word because then it sounds like we don't understand why it's working and and there are
- 43:31They're very specific reasons why this methodology is so effective
- 43:35But it can feel miraculous when you have somebody who has been through so many different practitioners and not getting results
- 43:41Not getting results not getting results and then they come to us and get
- 43:45Incredible results and it's really exciting for everybody involved. So fantastic practitioners
- 43:51You can connect with us on Instagram the schools

- 44:08And I can point you in the right direction because I know sometimes find a practitioner databases can just be a little like
- 44:14overwhelming and you don't really know
- 44:17Who to go to so I can I can point you in the right direction if you have some
- 44:20If you have a specific situation that you would like support with
- 44:25Yeah, well, thank you for joining me and hopefully we'll get to do this again
