- 0:00Welcome back to Spy Trader , your goto podcast for quick market insights and actionable advice .
- 0:07It's 6 am on Tuesday , August 19th , 2025 , Pacific time , and I'm your host , Wall Street Willy , here to break down what's moving the markets while you sip your morning coffee .
- 0:20The US stock market is having quite the moment right now , folks , showing remarkable strength with major indices like the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 nearing or even setting new record highs .
- 0:35This is a pretty impressive rebound , especially considering some of the dips we saw earlier in the year .
- 0:41The Dow , for example , gained 1.7% last week , and the S&P 500 is up nearly 10% yeartodate .
- 0:51The techheavy Nasdaq Composite is leading the charge with a fantastic 12.01% gain so far this year .
- 0:58What's driving all this good news ?
- 1:00A strong mix of robust corporate earnings , a surge in investor optimism , and the undeniable power of Artificial Intelligence .
- 1:08Diving a bit deeper , the technology sector continues to be a market powerhouse .
- 1:13Companies like Nvidia , Apple , and Meta Platforms have really been leading the charge , fueled by that massive AI boom and strong earnings .
- 1:23However , we did see some slight pullbacks in the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLK , on August 16th and 18th , suggesting a little profittaking .
- 1:35But here's a surprising star : the Industrials sector .
- 1:39It's actually the topperforming sector yeartodate in 2025 , returning an impressive 15.6% .
- 1:47This strength comes from longterm growth trends and significant public and private investments , especially from the US government's Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act .
- 1:57On the flip side , the Healthcare sector has been a bit of a laggard , dropping nearly 4% yeartodate .
- 2:04It's seen as one of the most undervalued sectors , largely due to policy uncertainties and some disappointing earnings guidance , particularly around Medicare Advantage products .
- 2:16Still , the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLV , did manage a gain on August 16th .
- 2:23Financials have performed well this year , though Morningstar considers them broadly overvalued , with the Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLF , declining recently .
- 2:35This sector , especially banks , could benefit from a steeper US Treasury yield curve , which boosts net interest margins .
- 2:43The Communications sector is tied with healthcare as most undervalued , driven by big tech names like Meta Platforms and Alphabet .
- 2:52And in Real Estate , REITs have been mostly flat , though many reported solid secondquarter results .
- 2:59Now , for some key headlines that have been shaping the market .
- 3:03The AI boom is front and center .
- 3:06Xiaomi unveiled a nextgen AI voice model , Elon Musk's xAI launched GrokImagine , and we've seen massive investments in AI infrastructure , like Google's 9 billion in data centers in Oklahoma and Applied Digital's 3 billion AI Factory in North Dakota .
- 3:25Even OpenAI employees are looking to sell 6 billion worth of shares , valuing the company at a staggering 500 billion .
- 3:35Trade policy has also been a factor .
- 3:38After some steep declines earlier this year due to new US tariffs , investor sentiment has rebounded with a more conciliatory approach to global trade talks .
- 3:49However , President Trump's tariffs are still impacting consumer costs and the labor market , and the prospect of higher tariffs on imported semiconductors could weigh on chip stocks .
- 4:01Corporate earnings have been surprisingly resilient , with over 80% of S&P 500 companies reporting betterthanexpected secondquarter results .
- 4:11On the company front , Dayforce , ticker DAY , shares soared 26% on buyout reports from Thoma Bravo .
- 4:19First Solar , FSLR , jumped almost 10% thanks to favorable clean energy tax credits .
- 4:27The Trade Desk , TTD , saw its shares rise on news of its strong partnership with Walmart , easing tariff concerns .
- 4:35Intel , INTC , slipped a bit on August 18th , despite a recent rally , with SoftBank's 2 billion investment and ongoing talks about a potential US government stake still in the mix .
- 4:50And Kandi Technologies , KNDI , reported lower revenues but a significant improvement in gross margin and strategic expansion into embodied intelligence and battery swap infrastructure .
- 5:02Looking at the big economic picture , inflation is still on our radar .
- 5:07The US Consumer Price Index for July 2025 rose 2.7% yearonyear , steady from June .
- 5:16But core CPI , which excludes food and energy , accelerated to 3.1% , its highest in five months , attributed to those tariffs .
- 5:26On interest rates , the Federal Reserve has paused cuts since December 2024 .
- 5:31However , the stable overall CPI data for July has significantly increased expectations for a rate cut at the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee meeting on September 17th , with a 94% likelihood .
- 5:47Lower rates are generally great for investment and the economy .
- 5:51US GDP growth rebounded strongly in the second quarter of 2025 , expanding at an annual rate of 3% , a big jump from the 0.5% contraction in the first quarter , fueled by better trade and consumer spending .
- 6:07The Atlanta Fed even estimates thirdquarter growth at 2.5% .
- 6:12The job market , however , shows signs of softening .
- 6:16Recent government data revised job figures for May and June dramatically downwards , indicating only 33,000 jobs added , a significant drop from the initial 291,000 .
- 6:30Employment growth has stalled , and over 850,000 jobs were lost according to the household survey , with continuing claims remaining elevated .
- 6:41The US dollar has seen some fluctuations , weakening earlier in August which often invites global investment , but rising again on August 18th .
- 6:51So , what's a savvy investor to do ?
- 6:54Here are some concrete recommendations from your pal , Wall Street Willy .
- 6:58First , maintain core broad market equity exposure for diversified growth .
- 7:03The overall market trend is positive , so a broad market ETF helps you capture that general appreciation .
- 7:11A great example is the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF , VTI .
- 7:16It covers the entire US stock market , from large to microcap stocks , giving you diversified growth without putting all your eggs in one basket .
- 7:25Second , strategically overweight the Technology sector , especially AI and Semiconductors .
- 7:31The AI revolution is a powerful , ongoing market driver .
- 7:35For diversified tech exposure , consider the Invesco QQQ Trust , QQQ , which tracks the Nasdaq100 .
- 7:44If you're looking for highconviction exposure to a leader in the AI and semiconductor space , Nvidia , NVDA , is explicitly cited as a key driver of market gains .
- 7:55While tech stocks are pricey , the fundamental demand for AI infrastructure points to continued strong performance .
- 8:02Third , add exposure to the outperforming Industrials sector .
- 8:07This sector has been a quiet outperformer , driven by strong trends and government spending .
- 8:13The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLI , provides targeted exposure to this area .
- 8:20For a specific company , Stantec , STN , a global leader in sustainable design and engineering , has seen its shares rise due to operational efficiency and growth fueled by US government initiatives .
- 8:32Fourth , consider strategic allocation to Fixed Income for stability and potential gains from rate cuts .
- 8:39With a September Fed rate cut highly likely , bond ETFs become attractive .
- 8:46The Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF , BND , offers comprehensive exposure to US investmentgrade bonds , providing stability and income , especially valuable with the softening employment data .
- 9:00Finally , monitor Undervalued Sectors for longterm value opportunities .
- 9:06While currently facing headwinds , some sectors could offer longterm upside .
- 9:11The Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund , XLV , despite being the worstperforming sector yeartodate , could be a compelling longterm buying opportunity .
- 9:21Healthcare is often a defensive sector , and the fundamental demand for its services remains strong .
- 9:28Just remember , this requires a longterm perspective .
- 9:32In summary , the US stock market is riding a strong upward trend , thanks to tech innovation and surprisingly robust industrials .
- 9:41While inflation and employment data are mixed , the anticipation of Fed rate cuts is a significant positive .
- 9:48A diversified portfolio that balances highgrowth areas like technology and industrials with stable income from bonds , while keeping an eye on undervalued sectors for longterm potential , seems like a prudent strategy right now .
- 10:02That's it for this edition of Spy Trader .
- 10:05Keep those eyes peeled on the market , and I'll be back soon with more insights .
- 10:09Happy trading !
