- 0:58Speaker 1: Well, my heart is freshly full because of just the
- 1:01Speaker 1: most unusual day. My wife and I began the day
- 1:07Speaker 1: at the bedside of her dying father. What a dear man.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Hospice is watching over him. It's just, barring a miracle,
- 1:21Speaker 1: a matter of hours. Within a few hours, I was
- 1:27Speaker 1: at the birthday party party of my two-year-old granddaughter who
- 1:33Speaker 1: didn't want birthday cake she wanted birthday donuts and I
- 1:39Speaker 1: reflected on this cycle of life that in one day
- 1:42Speaker 1: you can reach to one side of the generation and
- 1:45Speaker 1: reach to the other reminded of the frailty of the
- 1:51Speaker 1: body yet the courage of the human spirit because of
- 1:56Speaker 1: the presence of Jesus Christ And so it's really out
- 2:00Speaker 1: of that heart that I come to wish all of
- 2:02Speaker 1: you mothers just the greatest of blessings. It's not easy,
- 2:10Speaker 1: this journey through life. It's full of pitfalls and turns,
- 2:13Speaker 1: surprises and valleys. But we would not make it without
- 2:19Speaker 1: you moms. We would stand absolutely no chance. And I've
- 2:27Speaker 1: got a few words that I hope will encourage you.
- 2:30Speaker 1: But before I do, I need to speak a couple
- 2:33Speaker 1: of words of gratitude to Mark and Carrie Tidwell and
- 2:40Speaker 1: to Jeff and Carol Nelson. Mark Tidwell has served as
- 2:45Speaker 1: executive minister of this church for well over a decade.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Jeff Nelson has served as worship leader of this church
- 2:51Speaker 1: for over two decades. The Tidwells are moving to Amarillo.
- 2:58Speaker 1: The Nelsons are moving to Abilene. Both families will be
- 3:03Speaker 1: sorely missed. And you need to know that these families
- 3:08Speaker 1: have discharged every duty that this congregation has ever asked
- 3:12Speaker 1: of them. We've tried our best to convince them to stay.
- 3:17Speaker 1: But if we can't, we send them off with our blessing.
- 3:20Speaker 1: And I just wanted you to know how grateful we
- 3:24Speaker 1: are for both of them. Heavenly Father, let your mercy
- 3:35Speaker 1: now be upon us as we receive your word. Speak
- 3:38Speaker 1: words of truth to us. Forgive our speaker. Sins are
- 3:41Speaker 1: too many to count. Grant that we might see Jesus,
- 3:45Speaker 1: just Jesus. Through Christ we pray. And all the church said.
- 3:51Speaker 1: A couple invited some people over to dinner at the table.
- 3:56Speaker 1: The wife turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, would
- 3:59Speaker 1: you please say the blessing? Amen. The girl said, oh,
- 4:03Speaker 1: I wouldn't know what to say. And the mom said, well,
- 4:07Speaker 1: just say to the Lord what you hear mommy say
- 4:09Speaker 1: to the Lord. And the little girl bowed her head
- 4:13Speaker 1: and said, oh Lord, why on earth did I invite
- 4:15Speaker 1: all these people to dinner? I read about a family
- 4:25Speaker 1: that was driving on the highway when they noticed a
- 4:27Speaker 1: child in the car of the next lane holding up
- 4:29Speaker 1: a handwritten sign that read, help. Before they could do anything,
- 4:35Speaker 1: her little brother held up a second sign that read,
- 4:38Speaker 1: my mother is singing. A unique challenge of mothers these
- 4:45Speaker 1: days is learning the language of text messaging.
- 4:49Speaker 2: One mom texted her son, what.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Do I-D-K-L-Y and T-T-Y-L mean?
- 4:56Speaker 2: He replied, I don't know, love you, talk to you later.
- 4:58Speaker 2: She replied, okay, I'll ask your sister.
- 5:08Speaker 1: One mom texted her son and said, your great aunt
- 5:11Speaker 1: just passed away, LOL. The son replied, now why is
- 5:21Speaker 1: that funny? She said, it's not funny.
- 5:23Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 5:25Speaker 1: Well, mom, LOL means laughing out loud.
- 5:27Speaker 2: She said, oh, I thought it meant lots of love.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Now I have to call everyone back. not easy being
- 5:38Speaker 2: a mom.
- 5:41Speaker 1: But if only the problems were limited to texting and
- 5:43Speaker 1: hosting this is a stormy season for mothers gangs pornography
- 5:51Speaker 1: violence few generations have had to face what our children
- 5:56Speaker 1: have to face and consequently few generations of mothers have
- 6:00Speaker 1: had a heavier responsibility than moms do today It wasn't
- 6:06Speaker 1: that long ago that we felt like the programs we
- 6:10Speaker 1: watched on television and the schools to which we sent
- 6:12Speaker 1: our children were on our side. Now many moms feel
- 6:17Speaker 1: like they're swimming upstream against the influence of culture. The
- 6:21Speaker 1: children are taught that the world evolved by accident and
- 6:25Speaker 1: the Bible is full of myths and that there are
- 6:27Speaker 1: no absolute standards of right and wrong. It's a stormy
- 6:31Speaker 1: season for Christian mothers. The value of motherhood itself is
- 6:37Speaker 1: under attack. The message is clear. Being a mother is fine,
- 6:42Speaker 1: but having a career is better. And moms who choose
- 6:45Speaker 1: to forego or postpone their careers find themselves in a
- 6:49Speaker 1: defensive posture, almost like they have to apologize for making
- 6:54Speaker 1: time for their children. Financial pressure is equally intense. Many
- 7:00Speaker 1: young families begin their lives in with a burden of
- 7:04Speaker 1: college debt or an oversized mortgage payment. For many moms,
- 7:09Speaker 1: there is the immense challenge of parenting alone for whatever reason.
- 7:16Speaker 1: The death of a husband or the pregnancy outside of
- 7:19Speaker 1: marriage or divorce or separation. They battle the unspeakably stiff
- 7:24Speaker 1: winds of being a single mom. It's hard for us
- 7:29Speaker 1: to fully appreciate this challenge. What is it like to
- 7:33Speaker 1: wake up before the kids get up, to get them ready,
- 7:37Speaker 1: drop them off at school or wherever it is they
- 7:40Speaker 1: spend the day, rush to a demanding job, pick up
- 7:42Speaker 1: the kids in the afternoon, provide for their meals, help
- 7:45Speaker 1: them with their homework and then get them to bed.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And then with whatever time remains, there are bills to
- 7:51Speaker 1: be paid and laundry to be done and a house
- 7:54Speaker 1: to be cleaned and attached to that the emotional stigma
- 7:58Speaker 1: that can come from the loneliness of singlehood. And you
- 8:01Speaker 1: have one of the greatest challenges of our society. So
- 8:08Speaker 1: what's a mother to do? Challenges at school, challenges from peers,
- 8:14Speaker 1: challenges at home. Where can a mom turn for help?
- 8:19Speaker 1: One place is to the story of Mary, the mother
- 8:25Speaker 1: of Jesus. If anyone ever provided a model of godly
- 8:30Speaker 1: parenting in a hostile environment, it was she. Whereas moms
- 8:37Speaker 1: today may face a storm, we agree, don't we, that Mary,
- 8:41Speaker 1: the mother of Jesus, battled a typhoon. She raised Jesus
- 8:47Speaker 1: in a difficult environment, yet did so successfully. So let's
- 8:51Speaker 1: take just a minute and look at some of the
- 8:53Speaker 1: difficulties that that Mary, the mother of Jesus, faced. Let's
- 8:59Speaker 1: look at Mary's sources of struggle, the first of which
- 9:02Speaker 1: was a suspicious past. God chose her to be the
- 9:07Speaker 1: mother of Jesus, but other than Joseph, no one believed
- 9:11Speaker 1: her story.
- 9:14Speaker 2: No one.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And if Nazareth was like any other small town, juicy
- 9:19Speaker 1: gossip was the coin of the realm. Mary had to
- 9:22Speaker 1: live with the undeserved stigma of being perceived as an
- 9:26Speaker 1: immoral woman.
- 9:28Speaker 2: She was known as.
- 9:29Speaker 1: The woman who gave birth to a child conceived outside
- 9:34Speaker 1: of wedlock. 30 years later, the enemies of Jesus made
- 9:40Speaker 1: what seems to be a thinly veiled slight about this
- 9:45Speaker 1: mother when they said to Jesus, we were not born
- 9:49Speaker 1: of fornication.
- 9:52Speaker 2: As if implying that he was.
- 9:57Speaker 1: How can you raise godly children when your own reputation
- 10:00Speaker 1: is in question? Some of you mothers wrestle with that
- 10:04Speaker 1: very question. You're not proud of the things you've done.
- 10:09Speaker 1: You're not proud of the fact that others know of
- 10:11Speaker 1: the things you've done. And like Mary, you may have
- 10:14Speaker 1: a suspicious past. But like Mary, you don't have to
- 10:18Speaker 1: be held back. Because here's the truth. The truth is
- 10:24Speaker 1: your past has been buried in the sea of God's grace.
- 10:30Speaker 1: For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
- 10:33Speaker 1: so great is his love for those who fear him.
- 10:36Speaker 1: As far as the east is from the west, so
- 10:38Speaker 1: far as he removed our transgressions from us. So the
- 10:42Speaker 1: next time you feel less than qualified, you just remember.
- 10:48Speaker 1: For the joy that was set before him Jesus endured
- 10:51Speaker 1: the cross, despising the shame. That is to say, he
- 10:56Speaker 1: not only bore our sins, but he.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Bore our shame.
- 11:00Speaker 1: So you don't have to bear it anymore. He has
- 11:02Speaker 1: chosen you for this holy task. Mary had a second challenge.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Not only did she have a suspicious past, but she
- 11:13Speaker 1: had severe poverty. Mary and Joseph were peasant parents. The
- 11:19Speaker 1: sacrifice they offered in the temple when Jesus was born
- 11:22Speaker 1: was the offering of the poor, two sparrows.
- 11:26Speaker 2: This was a low-income family.
- 11:29Speaker 1: After all, is there a more meager beginning than a
- 11:31Speaker 1: manger and a barn?
- 11:33Speaker 2: And that's all that Mary had to give her child.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Do you ever feel inadequate because you feel like you
- 11:42Speaker 1: have little to give your child?
- 11:45Speaker 2: Are you guilt ridden.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Because your child doesn't have the latest iPhone or the
- 11:50Speaker 1: newest brand of jeans or computer games? And what about
- 11:54Speaker 1: those expensive music and athletic camps and private schools that
- 12:00Speaker 1: some children end up at? Are you tempted to assume
- 12:04Speaker 1: a budget busting debt just so you can give your
- 12:08Speaker 1: child everything that he or she says he wants?
- 12:13Speaker 2: Can I urge you to be careful?
- 12:17Speaker 1: God may be giving you a marvelous opportunity to teach
- 12:24Speaker 1: your child that life does not consist in an abundance
- 12:31Speaker 1: of possessions. Money is way overrated. Love never is. And
- 12:40Speaker 1: if all you can give your child is a home,
- 12:44Speaker 1: how be it simple enough, but full of love, then
- 12:48Speaker 1: you are raising your child in a world of affluence.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Mary had another challenge, spiritual pressure. Her son was hated
- 13:01Speaker 1: by the authorities. Remember how Herod went after Jesus? Can
- 13:05Speaker 1: you imagine the ruler coming after your young child? Mary
- 13:11Speaker 1: and Joseph had to flee to Egypt lest the power
- 13:13Speaker 1: of the land attack and kidnap and kill their child.
- 13:18Speaker 1: They took drastic steps to protect their baby. Sometimes moms,
- 13:25Speaker 1: you have to take drastic steps as well. Remember, there's
- 13:30Speaker 1: a ruler in pursuit of your child. His name's not Herod,
- 13:33Speaker 1: his name is Satan. So take your stand against the
- 13:37Speaker 1: devil schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood,
- 13:40Speaker 1: but against the rulers, the authorities. against the powers of
- 13:44Speaker 1: this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil.
- 13:47Speaker 2: In the heavenly realms.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Satan is seeking to kidnap and harm your child. And
- 13:55Speaker 1: he's a clever schemer. He makes evil look good. He
- 13:59Speaker 1: makes good look evil. So Mary models what to do.
- 14:04Speaker 1: She took serious steps. We must do the same. We
- 14:09Speaker 1: must pray fervently. We must call upon every friend we got.
- 14:14Speaker 1: We must enlist the prayers of grandmas and grandpas and
- 14:17Speaker 1: neighbors and friends.
- 14:20Speaker 2: We must teach scripture.
- 14:22Speaker 1: We must love our children with a deep abiding love.
- 14:28Speaker 2: We must do whatever it takes.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Sometimes this includes drastic steps that make you unpopular with
- 14:34Speaker 1: your kids.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Little or no TV, little or no computer games.
- 14:40Speaker 1: You don't need to go to Egypt, but you do
- 14:42Speaker 1: need to go to any extreme that you feel to
- 14:45Speaker 1: protect your child. That is your God-given responsibility. And I
- 14:51Speaker 1: would have a hunch that most dads would agree that
- 14:55Speaker 1: we need the mom's intuitive sense to help us make
- 15:00Speaker 1: some difficult decisions.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Mary had another challenge, and that is single parenthood.
- 15:08Speaker 1: After reaching the age of 12, we never hear from,
- 15:11Speaker 1: after Jesus reached the age of 12, we never hear
- 15:14Speaker 1: from Joseph again. We read about Mary at the marriage
- 15:18Speaker 1: feast in Cana, Mary at the cross, but Joseph is
- 15:22Speaker 1: never mentioned. It could very well be that Joseph died
- 15:26Speaker 1: when Jesus was young. This means that for most of
- 15:30Speaker 1: her life, Mary was a single mom. George Broach in
- 15:33Speaker 1: his book, One by One, says that only two in
- 15:37Speaker 1: five children will make it to age 18 with both parents.
- 15:41Speaker 2: In the house.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Numerous moms have to wear the hats of mom and dad.
- 15:48Speaker 1: So if you are one of them, let Mary inspire you.
- 15:54Speaker 1: You're a hero in heaven and you're a hero here.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Our hats are off to you. And though you work
- 16:00Speaker 1: all week long, you're here on the weekends with your child,
- 16:03Speaker 1: sometimes against your child's will. sometimes against the earthly father's will,
- 16:10Speaker 1: but you do it. And God will reward you for it.
- 16:15Speaker 1: He says, let us not grow weary while doing good
- 16:18Speaker 1: for in due season, we will reap if we do
- 16:22Speaker 1: not lose heart. Does it surprise you to know that
- 16:26Speaker 1: Mary had some struggles? It might encourage you to find
- 16:31Speaker 1: that Mary found strength. We've looked at Mary's struggles. Now
- 16:35Speaker 1: let's look at some sources of Mary's strength. The first
- 16:39Speaker 1: of which was her holy call. When told she would
- 16:45Speaker 1: be the mother of the son of God, she said,
- 16:47Speaker 1: I'm the Lord's servant. She had a holy call on
- 16:51Speaker 1: her life that said, whatever you need me to do, God,
- 16:54Speaker 1: that's what I'll do. This was not a call to
- 16:58Speaker 1: be a success or to be famous or to be rich,
- 17:00Speaker 1: but she just wanted to be a servant, a servant
- 17:03Speaker 1: to God. In her case, Being a good servant meant
- 17:06Speaker 1: being a good mother. She viewed motherhood as a high
- 17:12Speaker 1: and holy call. Billy Graham speaks of a sign he
- 17:17Speaker 1: saw hanging over a kitchen sink. Divine duty done here daily. Mothers,
- 17:24Speaker 1: you have a divine duty. You have a few precious
- 17:27Speaker 1: years to partner with God in the shaping of a soul.
- 17:32Speaker 1: And you have no higher call no more breathtaking privilege
- 17:36Speaker 1: than to instruct your child about Jesus. Ultimately, this is
- 17:40Speaker 1: the task not of the church, the school, the daycare, grandparents,
- 17:44Speaker 1: or the government. This is a task that falls in
- 17:47Speaker 1: the home. It's the task of mom and dad. Now,
- 17:53Speaker 1: if you see this call, if you see being a
- 17:58Speaker 1: parent a call, a holy call, then you're going to
- 18:02Speaker 1: find joy. The Bible says that children are a heritage
- 18:08Speaker 1: from the Lord. Mary was also strengthened by her obedient child.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I know we'd all love to have Jesus Christ as
- 18:16Speaker 1: our child. But remember, he was tempted and he never sinned.
- 18:23Speaker 1: What a difference it must have made for Mary to
- 18:27Speaker 1: have a compliant, obedient child. Young people, your obedience will
- 18:32Speaker 1: raise the happiness level in your house. You cannot be
- 18:37Speaker 1: like Jesus, but you can try. Children, obey your parents
- 18:44Speaker 1: in the Lord. I don't have many regrets in life,
- 18:50Speaker 1: but I have two years out of my teenage years
- 18:53Speaker 1: that I would covet to have back.
- 18:57Speaker 2: And during those two years, I was disobedient. To my
- 19:00Speaker 2: mother and my father. I was disrespectful. I was cocky.
- 19:05Speaker 1: I was too big for my britches. And I made
- 19:08Speaker 1: their lives miserable. Even 40 years later, I can still
- 19:15Speaker 1: see the sadness in their faces. Young people, your parents
- 19:23Speaker 1: are not perfect.
- 19:24Speaker 2: But guess what? Neither are you.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Young people, your parents do not know everything, but guess what?
- 19:33Speaker 1: They know more than you do. And no one loves
- 19:37Speaker 1: you more than your mother does. No one.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Loves you more than your mother does.
- 19:48Speaker 1: One of the best things you can do this Mother's
- 19:50Speaker 1: Day is to put your arms around her and just say, Mom,
- 19:55Speaker 1: you can count on me. I'm going to do better.
- 20:01Speaker 1: It'll mean a lot to her. It'll also mean a
- 20:03Speaker 1: lot if you keep the smelling salts handy.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Because she'll faint.
- 20:08Speaker 1: She'll faint. Nothing could mean more to her than your love.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Mary was also reinforced by a committed husband. We don't
- 20:20Speaker 1: know much about Joseph, but we know he and Mary
- 20:23Speaker 1: were on the same page. Men, it's essential that you
- 20:26Speaker 1: seek to be on the same page with your wife.
- 20:28Speaker 1: You may have seen the cartoon in which a husband
- 20:31Speaker 1: comes home to a frazzled wife. Hair in colors, robe disheveled,
- 20:35Speaker 1: house a mess. And the caption has her saying, Every
- 20:40Speaker 1: day you ask me what I do all day long.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Today I didn't do it and here it is. Men,
- 20:50Speaker 1: do you know what your wife does all day long?
- 20:53Speaker 1: She performs the role of baby feeder, walker, hugger, changer, singer, teacher,
- 21:00Speaker 1: and counselor. She masters algebra, scouting, first aid, and first steps.
- 21:05Speaker 1: She pays bills to the creditors, pays attention to the stove,
- 21:09Speaker 1: and pays respect to her Lord. She is a listener,
- 21:13Speaker 1: an arbitrator, a party planner, a chauffeur, and a lover.
- 21:17Speaker 1: She may kill roaches and wasps, but she seldom kills time.
- 21:22Speaker 1: She is a mother, and sometimes mothers get a little tired.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Some time ago, my wife, Dean Lynn, and I were
- 21:32Speaker 1: watching videos from the days when our daughters were young,
- 21:35Speaker 1: and she made this comment. I think I was tired
- 21:38Speaker 1: for 10 years. Men, we're asking a lot from our wives.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Believe it or not, they really don't want your advice,
- 21:56Speaker 1: your suggestions, your fix-it plans. What they want, what they
- 22:03Speaker 1: desire is your understanding. The Bible says husbands should live
- 22:11Speaker 1: with your wives in an understanding way. So next time
- 22:18Speaker 1: you're tempted to complain at the lack of romance or
- 22:22Speaker 1: the abundance of laundry, try to imagine what it's like
- 22:29Speaker 1: to be a mom. Be careful how you do this, however.
- 22:33Speaker 1: A workaholic husband resolved to be a better husband and
- 22:36Speaker 1: he showed up at home early one afternoon with flowers
- 22:39Speaker 1: in his hand and a bottle of champagne, singing, I
- 22:42Speaker 1: love you truly. His wife burst into tears. It's been
- 22:46Speaker 1: a horrible day. I burned the toast, the dog is sick,
- 22:49Speaker 1: the kids were late to school, and now you show
- 22:51Speaker 1: up drunk. Mary had one other resource as we wrap
- 23:05Speaker 1: this up. The mother of Jesus said, had a concerned
- 23:09Speaker 1: female friend. The mother of Jesus found strength in a
- 23:14Speaker 1: network of friendships. We know at least one of these friends,
- 23:17Speaker 1: her cousin Elizabeth, who became the mother of John the Baptist.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Elizabeth encouraged Mary. Mothers, you need an Elizabeth in your life.
- 23:27Speaker 1: No husband I know of can provide all you need.
- 23:31Speaker 1: You need a female friend to encourage you. The church
- 23:34Speaker 1: can help with this. Many moms have found strength in
- 23:37Speaker 1: the women's ministry or the ladies' Bible classes or mentoring moms.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Some meet with others for prayer. Others network with moms
- 23:45Speaker 1: in their neighborhoods. Some take turns watching each other's kids.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Seek to build relationships with other moms, with your sisters
- 23:55Speaker 1: in Christ. Let us not neglect our meeting together as
- 23:58Speaker 1: some people do, but let us encourage one another, especially
- 24:02Speaker 1: now that the day of his return is drawing near. Moms,
- 24:07Speaker 1: seek encouragement in the church. Church, give encouragement to the moms.
- 24:14Speaker 1: I read recently about a horse in the Calgary, Canada
- 24:17Speaker 1: stampede that pulled over 7,000 pounds. Second place horse pulled
- 24:24Speaker 1: just under 7,000 pounds. But when they hooked them up together, together,
- 24:29Speaker 1: the horses pulled 27,000 pounds. By pulling together, we can
- 24:39Speaker 1: do more than the sum of our parts. So husbands,
- 24:43Speaker 1: support these moms. Children, obey your parents. Church, encourage these moms.
- 24:51Speaker 1: And moms, don't give up.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Mary didn't. She was rewarded for her faithfulness.
- 24:56Speaker 1: She was present at the resurrection of Jesus Christ from
- 25:00Speaker 1: the dead. She saw her other children come to faith
- 25:04Speaker 1: in their brother, Jesus Christ and she was one of
- 25:08Speaker 1: the 120 in the upper room when the church began
- 25:11Speaker 1: she was rewarded Mary was rewarded and you will be
- 25:17Speaker 1: too you have a divine calling you have a divine
- 25:20Speaker 1: friend and he knows the challenges you face and he

- 29:45Speaker 4: I'm still lost in missing you Maybe someday I'll stop
- 29:55Speaker 4: searching For your face in every crowd But until that
- 30:01Speaker 4: day this broken heart will keep calling your name out
