- 0:04- Hello and welcome back to the pop culture junkie podcast.

- 0:12- Hi.
- 0:13- Hi, Beebee.
- 0:15How are you?
- 0:17Just another day, another day in Paradise.
- 0:22- It actually is quite nice here right now.
- 0:26I went to Phoenix and I came back here.
- 0:31I feel like maybe we recorded since then,
- 0:34but I went to Phoenix and I got back here
- 0:37and it's been like 60, 70, it's been perfect.
- 0:41I really, really love it.
- 0:44On Easter, I went to this very unique San Francisco event.
- 0:48It is called the movie.
- 0:49- Oh my God, the video was amazing.
- 0:50I was over at Andrew's family's house
- 0:54and I was like, "What a living is doing, guys?"
- 0:56(laughing)
- 0:57- So I went to this event in Dolores Park,
- 1:01which is right by Mission and Castro.
- 1:05Castro is the gay neighborhood.
- 1:06And it was this park, right?
- 1:09- Yes, you and I went.
- 1:11And it's called the most really hot.
- 1:13- Yes, yeah.
- 1:14It's called Honky Jesus and it is a sexy Jesus pageant contest.
- 1:19And it is amazing.
- 1:22It's as great as it sounds.
- 1:23It's very San Francisco.
- 1:25Everybody dresses up in sacrilegious costumes.
- 1:29- I love it. - For the event.
- 1:31And yeah, it's a pageant for men
- 1:34and they ultimately show off how sexy they are.
- 1:38Truly, there are some crazy costumes.
- 1:42People of wine, there was like a Ken wine.
- 1:45There was a man.
- 1:46- Ken, Jesus.
- 1:47- Ken, Jesus, it's so good.
- 1:49- Ken, I definitely look up Honky Jesus winners.
- 1:52They are amazing.
- 1:54The guy last year came in on this like,

- 2:03This year, Renewable Energy Jesus one.
- 2:05- Yes, we love it.
- 2:07- We love the Green New Deal Jesus.
- 2:09- Yeah, he had a little like windmill cross.
- 2:12It was great.
- 2:13- Oh my God.
- 2:14Did you dress like Mary Magdalene?
- 2:17- No, I actually, so I went with my boyfriends mom
- 2:21and stepped out and his sister, which is even funnier.
- 2:24- Wait, was he not there?
- 2:26- No, he was there.
- 2:27- Oh, it's like you dressed up as a man.
- 2:29- You left your boyfriend at home.
- 2:31- Yeah, it's like, you've got to stay here.
- 2:32I've got to show them those things.
- 2:33- You stay.
- 2:34- And so yeah, ultimately it was family affair.
- 2:39It was very funny.
- 2:40In San Francisco, people are allowed to be fully naked though.
- 2:44And so we ran into a few fully nude individuals
- 2:50in this process.
- 2:51And yeah, it was just great.
- 2:54Just like you just put them in the closet.
- 2:55- Like you just put them in the closet?
- 2:56- Or they just naked.
- 2:57- They were just naked.
- 2:59- They're just naked.
- 2:59- Oh, I'm not.
- 3:00- As a way Jesus made them, you know?
- 3:02(laughing)
- 3:04And it was really important.
- 3:06- It was the good Lord and Tend it, you know?
- 3:09- Listen.
- 3:09- I will say, we did not get our obligatory egg pick
- 3:13this year though, because I didn't make double bags.
- 3:16So.
- 3:17- Oh my gosh, we didn't.
- 3:19- I know the egg.
- 3:19- Yeah.
- 3:20- Yeah, egg.
- 3:21- Egg Libya did not make an egg cross this year, unfortunately.
- 3:25- I have multiple pictures in my phone,
- 3:27listeners of Olivia just posing with a large amount
- 3:32of devil legs.
- 3:34And they always start out good.
- 3:35And then she starts smiling.
- 3:36And then they turn strangely sexual with the eggs
- 3:39and just like, it's bent over with the butt.
- 3:42- Yeah, yeah.
- 3:42So.
- 3:43- Yeah.
- 3:44- Maybe you'll post them.
- 3:45- I should post them.
- 3:46I like the ones where you just look joyful.
- 3:48You're just like, (screams)
- 3:50- Yeah.
- 3:51- And you know, at the time, okay, I think I had like 36 eggs.
- 3:56- You had so many eggs.
- 3:58- Which, like in my mind, I was like, that's 36 devil legs.
- 4:02That is not 36 devil legs.
- 4:04- No, it's not.
- 4:04- That is what's math.
- 4:06- But 72.
- 4:07- 72 devil legs.
- 4:09And I was making them for four people.
- 4:11(laughing)
- 4:14- I made two big friends.
- 4:16- We, I made 18.
- 4:18- And 36 for Easter this year.
- 4:21- Okay.
- 4:22- I think they turned out pretty good,
- 4:23but we didn't finish them,
- 4:24but I just left the rest for the Andrews grandparents.
- 4:26So, hopefully they finished them.
- 4:28And I put like chopped up like peppers from his Nana's garden.
- 4:32They were little spicy.
- 4:33- Spicy.
- 4:34- Mm.
- 4:35- Spicy.
- 4:35- Yeah.
- 4:36- Yeah.
- 4:37- Yeah, I didn't make them.
- 4:38Did your whole house smell like farts?
- 4:41- I mean, usually does.
- 4:43- Yeah. - It's just that.
- 4:43- It smells.
- 4:45- Heart storm, fart storm.
- 4:46- It smells like cats and protein farts in this house.
- 4:49(laughing)
- 4:51- An occasional bed bath and beyond candle.
- 4:53- There you go.
- 4:54- Let me just try and, try and best to hold it all together.
- 4:57(laughing)
- 4:59- Speaking of things that make us happy
- 5:01to hold ourselves together,
- 5:04Olivia and I had the idea to watch each other's favorite movies
- 5:08and do an entire episode based on each other's favorite movies.
- 5:12Did you like my transition?
- 5:13I was trying really hard there.
- 5:14- Yeah.
- 5:15- You did amazing.
- 5:17(laughing)
- 5:19- So my favorite movie is first,
- 5:21we'll do a whole episode dedicated to my favorite movie.
- 5:23And then sometime soon we will do an episode dedicated
- 5:26to Olivia's favorite movie.
- 5:28My favorite movie, really since the day
- 5:32that I saw it in high school is V for Bendetta,
- 5:37which has definitely been getting a little extra traction nowadays
- 5:42because it is strangely very pertinent.
- 5:47- Relevant?
- 5:49- Relevant, thank you.
- 5:50It's a little relevant right now.
- 5:53pertinent relevant.
- 5:54So V for Bendetta was released on March 17th, 2006
- 5:59in the United States.
- 6:00Apparently had a limited release in a premiere in 2005.
- 6:04I didn't realize that.
- 6:05It is directed by James McTeague.
- 6:09Sorry if I said that completely wrong, but we're gonna go with it.
- 6:13It stars Hugo Weaving as V.
- 6:16He is the main character along with Natalie Portman
- 6:20as Evie Hammond.
- 6:22Have you ever seen this movie before
- 6:24I made you watch it, Olivia?
- 6:27- Yes, actually I really, really love this movie.
- 6:29I think that when I first saw it,
- 6:32like I was just like, wow, this is so unique.
- 6:35It is such a beautifully done movie.
- 6:38I think that a lot of the monologues
- 6:41within this movie are so memorable.
- 6:44I mean, the mask is absolutely iconic.
- 6:47It is now used actually by activist groups, like anonymous.
- 6:51And there, I mean, how can you not every November 5th go?
- 6:56Remember, remember the 5th of November?
- 6:58- Yes.
- 6:59- And so I think there are so many iconic movies,
- 7:02but I think when I first saw this movie,
- 7:04probably around 2005, 2006.
- 7:07I went, wow, that's such a quirky little movie
- 7:10that will never happen.
- 7:12Oh my goodness.
- 7:13- Oh my God.
- 7:15- Like that's a distant future that I will never know.
- 7:18And like, wow, I'm so happy we have democracy kind of thing.
- 7:22And it felt very, very distant at the time.
- 7:26And I think that I've watched this movie throughout,
- 7:29you know, like I always really visited it.
- 7:31Probably like every five years.
- 7:34And I watch it.
- 7:34And it was really striking to rewatch it.
- 7:38And Blake had never actually seen it before.
- 7:41- Oh good.
- 7:42I'm glad he watched it with you.
- 7:43- Yeah, him and I watched it together.
- 7:45I was like, you know what?
- 7:46We're gonna sit down.
- 7:47We're gonna watch this movie.
- 7:48And he'd never seen it like most movies.
- 7:50We're getting him there.
- 7:52He's getting in there.
- 7:52- Oh, he's learning movies now.
- 7:54- He's getting there, guys.
- 7:55He's getting there.
- 7:56Well, we'll turn this into a pop culture junkie yet.
- 7:59- No, literally there's a list of all the movies
- 8:02that he hasn't seen purely because I'm like,
- 8:04you've never seen that and we just had it to the list.
- 8:07- Andrew and I have been together for 16 years
- 8:09and we still do that.
- 8:10He's never seen Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
- 8:15Like the original original?
- 8:16- Yeah.
- 8:18- But he's seen the Johnny Depp one?
- 8:20- Yeah.
- 8:21But he's never seen the original one.
- 8:23I was showing him like the tunnel scene
- 8:25from Willy Wonka.
- 8:26I don't remember.
- 8:27I was like, that reminds me of the tunnel scene
- 8:28from Willy Wonka, I don't know.
- 8:30And he's like, I know what you're talking about.
- 8:32So yeah, uncultured.
- 8:35- Men, men.
- 8:37Okay, keep going.
- 8:38But so we've never seen it and it was like really, really crazy
- 8:43for like me to be like, wow, like thinking about him
- 8:47watching it in this lens of the world that we are today.
- 8:51- Yeah.
- 8:52- And when I watched it, like it really is
- 8:54just such a beautiful movie and everyone on that movie
- 8:58was full-sand, so good.
- 9:00- Yeah.
- 9:01- And the casting, the writing, the set director,
- 9:05like the historical references.
- 9:08I mean, like it's truly just such a good movie
- 9:11that references so many things in history,
- 9:14but it's very unique as well.
- 9:17Like they're their own characters.
- 9:19It's not like, oh, well, this is a copy paste of this person.
- 9:22It draws inspiration and makes it its own.
- 9:24So I really, really want this copy.
- 9:26- Yeah.
- 9:27- I'm glad that you like it.
- 9:28Yeah, it is.
- 9:30Like I said, my favorite movie, I watched it in 2006
- 9:33when it came out.
- 9:34I was a, gosh, I guess a junior in high school
- 9:37and I went with my academic to Catholic team
- 9:40and I remember leaving the theater and just being like,
- 9:43oh my god.
- 9:44Like, you know, people say like, oh, that movie radicalized you
- 9:47or what radicalized you.
- 9:48Like I would always kind of like cared about shit,
- 9:51but I don't know.
- 9:52I feel like I left that theater and I was like, oh my god.
- 9:55Like just, what stuck with me was just like the plight,
- 9:59like gay people went through in this movie.
- 10:01And just like how thin, like, you know,
- 10:06how fragile democracy is, I guess.
- 10:08So for those who haven't seen the movie,
- 10:11it is adapted from a graphic novel called V for Vendetta,
- 10:15created by Alan Moore and artist David Lloyd.
- 10:18It was published by DC Comics/Vertigo
- 10:21between 1982 and 1989.
- 10:24Vertigo is kind of like the darker DC Comics branch.
- 10:29So it's not like DC Comics like Batman,
- 10:31it's Superman and Batman, you know,
- 10:32it's like they're kind of rather under the radar
- 10:37indie kind of characters.
- 10:39Alan Moore has come out and said that he hated
- 10:41this movie adaptation.
- 10:43He did not like it at all.
- 10:44- Interesting.
- 10:45- I didn't dive too much into the reasoning behind that
- 10:48to be honest because I just wanted to focus more on the movie.
- 10:51I guess they do change a few things
- 10:53from the graphic novel to the movie adaptation.
- 10:57But I mean, it's a seven year long graphic novel
- 11:01it looks like and so there's a lot of content there.
- 11:04Kind of squish into a movie.
- 11:07- I haven't read the comic books either on them,
- 11:10but from what I understand and spoiler alert,
- 11:13we are gonna be going in here.
- 11:16- Yeah, we're gonna spoil this movie.
- 11:17So that was our quick synopsis of what the movie is.
- 11:21I guess let's actually go into the synopsis
- 11:23and then go into a little bit of the spoiler territory.
- 11:27- Exactly, yeah.
- 11:28So in a fascist future Britain,
- 11:31a young woman named Evie crosses paths with V.
- 11:34He is a masked revenge driven vigilante
- 11:37who plots to blow up Parliament on Guy Fox Knight
- 11:41to spark a public uprising
- 11:43against the tyrannical government that once tortured him.
- 11:47And that is where we get the famous poem.
- 11:50Remember, remember the fifth of November,
- 11:52the gunpowder treason in plot.
- 11:55I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason
- 11:57should ever be forgotten.
- 12:00So I guess back in, oh gosh, I should have looked up the year
- 12:04that Guy Fox tried to blow up Parliament.
- 12:06(laughs)
- 12:07He didn't succeed.
- 12:08And that is an actual thing that happened in history.
- 12:11- In history.
- 12:11- Mm-hmm.
- 12:12- So V wants to blow up Parliament.
- 12:16He walks around with a Guy Fox mask on,
- 12:19kind of like a cartoonish mask,
- 12:20has gloves on a hat, a wig.
- 12:22You never see any of his skin except for his hands very briefly
- 12:26when he's making eggs for Evie and they're very burned.
- 12:31- Yeah, and it was in 16, yeah.
- 12:33- Yeah, in 16-05, yeah, of course.
- 12:36Everyone knows that.
- 12:38Doh.
- 12:40So Evie gets kind of pulled into this against her will, right?
- 12:45She's going out for a walk one night
- 12:49and in this fascist future, big brother is watching you.
- 12:53There's a curfew.
- 12:54Everybody is being recorded at all times.
- 12:57Your movements are being monitored by the government.
- 13:00All of the TV is government ran and sanctioned.
- 13:04So as she's out to go on kind of a date,
- 13:08but kind of with her like boss,
- 13:11she is apprehended by finger men
- 13:13who are kind of like the ice agents.
- 13:16- Who stopp her.
- 13:17- Yeah, exactly.
- 13:19- Same thing.
- 13:20What's the difference?
- 13:24Who are trigger warnings writing to rape her.
- 13:27- And then chaos ensues.
- 13:30- Yes, and to be intervenes and has a very vocacious vocabulary
- 13:35and saves her.
- 13:38- Yes, and probably we're gonna have to say
- 13:42from this point on, we will have spoilers.
- 13:44So, you've never seen this movie.
- 13:47- Get out.
- 13:48- We love you, go watch it, come back, podcasts live forever
- 13:52so you can come into this.
- 13:54- Also, this movie came out 20 years ago.
- 13:56So it came out 20 years ago, but we're kind.
- 13:59We're kind people, we're giving you a warning
- 14:02and three, two, one, spoilers.
- 14:04- We're kind.
- 14:06- So kind.
- 14:07- So kind.
- 14:08- I'm a really good person.
- 14:10- Yeah, so whenever EB meets V, right?
- 14:14Obviously it's EVV.
- 14:17- So it's like it's meant to be.
- 14:19- Yeah, it's meant to be EV and V.
- 14:21- Yeah, even that rhyme.
- 14:23So, there, every other word is a V word.
- 14:28It is quite crazy.
- 14:29So when I say the writing in the monologues here,
- 14:32just so good, I was struck by,
- 14:37I didn't even know there were that many V words
- 14:39that you could use in a row to make sounds.
- 14:41- It all makes sense.
- 14:42- Honestly, I was taking them all dramatically correct.
- 14:45- Yeah, I was taking notes.
- 14:47And I got a little bit, I have one through the movie,
- 14:49so I was like, stop taking notes.
- 14:51But one of my few notes is,
- 14:54I never knew there were so many V words to use in a speech.
- 14:56But that was fun to write.
- 14:58(laughing)
- 15:00- Sounds vivified.
- 15:02- Yeah, and one of the really interesting things about this,
- 15:06right, is from the very beginning,
- 15:09there are these in every single scene
- 15:15of this movie in the set design as well.
- 15:19And so, I think that you really do see
- 15:21just such a love letter to this movie
- 15:24and the message that is trying to send.
- 15:26But, how is Shona was mentioning?
- 15:28From the second that we meet the A's Fingerman,
- 15:32which are Gustapo Ice Agents of what we see today,
- 15:37they are immediately abusing their power.
- 15:40And we see that by them trying to rape her,
- 15:43there is a curfew where no one can leave their homes at night.
- 15:47And ultimately, they are just under,
- 15:52one of the scariest moments,
- 15:54I think that you could see both the macro and the micro
- 15:58of how this really does impact a society
- 16:01and like a no you see yourself within ED as well.
- 16:05- And you know that these agents could get away
- 16:09with raping her if they succeeded in it.
- 16:12- Yeah, because the ground counselor, the chancellor,
- 16:15is a corrupt dictator, right?
- 16:19He can do whatever he wants, society cannot.
- 16:22And his agents would have been able to get away with this.
- 16:26And so you're right, like the day-to-day people,
- 16:29you aren't allowed to have music, art,
- 16:32they have a like forbidden materials
- 16:35and she goes to, you know, when she eventually goes to these house,
- 16:39it's just full of classical art and music.
- 16:44And later she goes to another person's house
- 16:47where they have the same thing
- 16:48and they also have a caran.
- 16:50There is a state religion,
- 16:52it's just very like Christoph-Fascism, right?
- 16:56- Yeah.
- 16:56- So having the caran in your house is a big no-no as well.
- 16:59- Obviously this movie is satin-bwritten.
- 17:02There are a lot of immigrants within Britain,
- 17:06there are a lot of Muslims within Britain as well.
- 17:08And so what I really do,
- 17:10and we kind of mentioned this before,
- 17:12is they reference quite a bit of history within this,
- 17:16but make it their own.
- 17:17And I was talking with Blake about this movie actually
- 17:22and I was like, so when you were watching this,
- 17:24were you thinking of Donald Trump?
- 17:25And he was like, yeah, absolutely.
- 17:27And I was like, well, the British Prime Minister
- 17:30is based on Hitler.
- 17:32And it is such an interesting juxtaposition,
- 17:36like everyone is always like those liberals,
- 17:39they love to call them Hitler all the time,
- 17:41but it really is like you see these moments of like,
- 17:43why don't I see America within this?
- 17:48When this movie was coming out, we had George Bush,
- 17:51we had the Iraq war, we had the conspiracies
- 17:54of 9/11 was an inside job.
- 17:57And ultimately you almost see that referenced
- 18:01within the movie as well, really early in it.
- 18:03Like talking about America's wars in America's impact
- 18:08on Britain actually closing its border
- 18:12and moving these things.
- 18:13And so it is quite interesting to see 20 years later.
- 18:17Exactly.
- 18:18All of the United States have been destabilized.
- 18:20They keep referring it to us.
- 18:21Like the country once known as the United States.
- 18:24There was a nuclear war between the US and the Soviet Union
- 18:27that led to this.
- 18:29And then the chaos written falls and is replaced
- 18:31by a coalition of far-right groups
- 18:34kind of backed by these big corporations.
- 18:36They call themselves Norse fire.
- 18:39And people start, they're afraid, right?
- 18:42There has been an international pandemic
- 18:46that broke out at St. Mary's School in the movie
- 18:50and of water treatment plant that was poison.
- 18:55Three of our people.
- 18:56Yeah, exactly.
- 18:57And so they keep kind of referring
- 18:58to those incidents throughout the movie.
- 19:01You find out, you know, towards the end
- 19:03and it's pretty obvious that the government itself
- 19:06was the one who released these things
- 19:08and made these attacks on their own country
- 19:12in order to make people fall in line in obey.
- 19:15And to lose their rights.
- 19:17Exactly.
- 19:18Because they're so scared they vote in this
- 19:20because it's, we will protect you.
- 19:22We will make Britain great again, right?
- 19:25And V sees through this.
- 19:27He survived a fire that broke out at what is at St. Mary's.
- 19:33He was part of like the experiment.
- 19:35No, so it was.
- 19:36Yeah, when they were engineering the biomedical weapons.
- 19:42They actually created it from the--
- 19:45That's right.
- 19:46And so what's interesting is, you know,
- 19:48he is the start of this as well as the end to this.
- 19:53Yeah.
- 19:53Yeah.
- 19:54So in the beginning and the end.
- 19:55So they were doing experiments on these counter protests.
- 20:01So anyone who was opposing the running prime minister
- 20:05at the time, they would detain and they
- 20:08would put them into these facilities
- 20:09and a lot of them died.
- 20:11All of the imagery in there is very reminiscent
- 20:14of like the Holocaust.
- 20:16They shave all of their heads.
- 20:18They throw them into mass graves once they're done, once they die,
- 20:21right?
- 20:22Nazi doctors.
- 20:24Exactly.
- 20:25And doing these experiments on them.
- 20:27And we see that it's people who don't fit the status quo,
- 20:30right?
- 20:31So if you're homosexual, if you're
- 20:34practicing a different religion, yeah, if you're a protester,
- 20:37the right to be--
- 20:39gathering and protesting at this point
- 20:41has been completely demolished, right?
- 20:44Even the color scheme in the film is very black and white
- 20:47and red, which is very Nazi-coded.
- 20:49We see the chancellor, you know, like you said, kind of in the Nazi
- 20:55S-cuniform, with like imagery behind him,
- 20:57speaking like him, obviously in English.
- 21:00But yeah, so they are abusing people.
- 21:04They create this disease.
- 21:06And then ultimately they start by spreading it
- 21:09to these key areas.
- 21:11So the first is the school, which of course,
- 21:14if children are sick and children are attacked,
- 21:16that is a real sense of everybody rallies behind that.
- 21:19And then ultimately they attack a water treatment
- 21:22plant.
- 21:23And from there, they strip away a lot of rights.
- 21:26They quarantine people.
- 21:28They set these embargoes.
- 21:31They close the borders.
- 21:32And ultimately, like again, this movie came out in 2005, 2006.
- 21:37Like it is quite a statement on the Patriot Act, which
- 21:41is our willingness to give up information.
- 21:48Yeah, our freedoms are right to privacy
- 21:51as a result of a terrorist attack.
- 21:55So it is quite nodding to that.
- 21:57This was also based on a comic that was written before.
- 22:01So we've seen these themes many times.
- 22:03Exactly.
- 22:04In Epson flows, I think, with how relevant it feels.
- 22:07Like you said earlier, when I watched this in 2006,
- 22:11I mean, I was a teenager.
- 22:12And not as smart as I am now.
- 22:17Crazy.
- 22:18But I left it.
- 22:19And I felt like there's, oh my gosh, I feel radicalized.
- 22:22I want to change the world.
- 22:23But now that it's 20 years later, and I'm watching it in 2026,
- 22:28and as an adult who's lived through all of these things,
- 22:30you're like, oh, shit, I see where this is going.
- 22:34So Evie very reluctantly gets taken to his house.
- 22:38Her parents were protesters.
- 22:40They were taken in black bags by the government.
- 22:43So you can tell there's something there.
- 22:46She wants to change the world.
- 22:47She wants to be a part of this fight.
- 22:49But she's scared, of course.
- 22:50Her parents were taken from her, never seen again.
- 22:53So when he takes her to a priest's house,
- 22:57she says she wants to help dress up like a little kid.
- 23:01Oh, we skipped over a very important part.
- 23:04V takes over a new station and gets the message out
- 23:07to all of Britain that says--
- 23:10Oh, wait.
- 23:11Are we even talking about the first moment of it?
- 23:14Yeah, he blew up the Bailey, right?
- 23:16So Evie's there.
- 23:18Oh my god.
- 23:19Evie's there.
- 23:20He blows up the Bailey, which is how she gets
- 23:22wrapped into all of this.
- 23:23Everyone thinks she's involved.
- 23:24But she's like, bro, I was just going for a walk.
- 23:27This dude saved me and asked if I liked music.
- 23:29And now here I am.
- 23:31Everything she's a terrorist.
- 23:33He takes over the new station, puts out a message.
- 23:35It says, one year from tonight, I will blow up Parliament.
- 23:39And it's kind of like a rallying cry.
- 23:41If you feel as I feel, if you see what I see, join me, right?
- 23:46And we can blow this shit up together.
- 23:49And from then, it's like, oh god, we got to catch this guy.
- 23:52And Evie, who everyone thinks is involved.
- 23:56OK, there we go.
- 23:57And yeah, it's like the initial scene
- 24:01and the ending scene kind of echo each other
- 24:04as well, again, Sean had mentioned it.
- 24:06But music is almost banned, right?
- 24:10So people don't have access to music.
- 24:13And we have the 1812 overture by Tchaichovsky.
- 24:17And we really, really hear this kind of like rally cry.
- 24:24They quickly cover it up and say, this was a planned demolition
- 24:29that happened.
- 24:30And then it goes to the new station.
- 24:34And releases a video.
- 24:35And says a year from now, if you think
- 24:38that this government is corrupt, show up at the Parliament
- 24:42and we will overthrow our evil overlords, right?
- 24:48I know.
- 24:48The spin is so interesting.
- 24:50It's like the take on fake news, right?
- 24:53And we now we're all very familiar with how certain stations
- 24:58control it.
- 24:59Yep, this is government run TV, right?
- 25:01So they cannot tell the truth.
- 25:04Even the newscasters know that the stories they're reporting
- 25:07on are bullshit.
- 25:08But obviously you have to fall in line or you will die.
- 25:13The government approved scripts.
- 25:15Exactly.
- 25:16Or as I say, or you will die.
- 25:18We can disappear you, right?
- 25:21So yeah, V intercepts.
- 25:23And it's like, I wasn't a planned demolition.
- 25:26I did it.
- 25:26Join me.
- 25:28And Evie gets involved, but tries to escape, right?
- 25:33And oh gosh.
- 25:35I want to take a break before we talk about the big scene
- 25:39with her interrogation.
- 25:41So--
- 25:41Yep.
- 25:42Yeah.
- 25:43Hold on, everybody.
- 25:44We're going to take a quick break and get even deeper
- 25:46into this right after this.
- 25:48So speaking of dystopian nightmares,
- 25:55how about this academy?
- 25:58Oh god.
- 25:59We know it's rough out there.

- 27:08Thank you.
- 27:09Love you.
- 27:10So now back to V for Vendetta.
- 27:12OK.
- 27:13We will wrap up our little plot points here.
- 27:16Evie tries to escape from V because she's like,
- 27:20she's scared.
- 27:21I understand.
- 27:22It's OK, girl.
- 27:23You're scared.
- 27:24You won't be soon.
- 27:26So she escapes to her boss's house,
- 27:29who is the guy she was supposed to meet in the date
- 27:31early in the movie.
- 27:33Finds out quickly that he's like, hey, I'm
- 27:36expected to wine and dye in beautiful women like you.
- 27:39I'm gay.
- 27:40And I have all this art in my house.
- 27:43He's a very safe--
- 27:44Thank you.
- 27:45He's a V for Vendetta.
- 27:47He's a V character, but he's hiding behind a mask
- 27:52that isn't like a physical mask, right?
- 27:54But he's hiding his--
- 27:56That was really deep.
- 27:58She's so scared.
- 28:00Yeah, he's hiding his--
- 28:01Did you think of that while you were
- 28:02baked while you were watching the movie?
- 28:04No, I just off the cuff said that.
- 28:06Damn.
- 28:08But he really is a similar character.
- 28:11But instead of a physical mask,
- 28:13he's hiding behind like a societal one.
- 28:16He is, unfortunately, quite of a big piece
- 28:20on how the spacious government is able to control people.
- 28:26He is a talk show.
- 28:28He's really like a Graham Norton character, which
- 28:32is actually like a very popular British talk show
- 28:35in our world.
- 28:38Yes.
- 28:39I was trying to think, who does he remind me of?
- 28:41And it's definitely Graham Norton.
- 28:42And he has this talk show, right?
- 28:45And most of the time, he falls in line.
- 28:48He decides to do a little--
- 28:49Yes, he goes a little off script and has a kind of an SNL
- 28:53moment where he saturizes the grand counselor--
- 28:57chancellor.
- 28:58I don't know why he keeps--
- 28:59Chancelor.
- 29:00--and makes fun of him.
- 29:02And once upon a time in Britain,
- 29:04that was allowed, just like it is right now in the United States.
- 29:07We see Trump being made fun of on SNL all the time.
- 29:10It is not allowed in this country in--
- 29:14--in V for the dead as time.
- 29:16What's interesting about this is he
- 29:19goes into this thinking, well, what are they going to do to me?
- 29:22They can't touch me.
- 29:23I am touchable.
- 29:25I am such a mouthpiece for them right now.
- 29:28I'll get a fine.
- 29:29I'll get a slap on the wrist.
- 29:31And ultimately, he does not.
- 29:33He gets taken away by--
- 29:35He is disappeared.
- 29:37He is disappeared.
- 29:38And it really parallels Eby's childhood
- 29:42where she watched her parents get taken.
- 29:45She is hiding under the bed.
- 29:47And she escapes out the window and is taken by the powers that be.
- 29:55Where she thinks is a figure man.
- 29:57Yes, she thinks she's taken by the finger man.
- 30:01And she's put into a very similar camp
- 30:04that these biomedical weapons were created in it.
- 30:09Yes.
- 30:10It's a very similar camp in situation
- 30:12to what V went through when he was being experimented on.
- 30:15We mentioned that V escaped.
- 30:17There was a fire.
- 30:18There was an explosion.
- 30:19He was the only test subject that survived, which
- 30:23is why he doesn't show his skin and why he looks so burned
- 30:26when she saw his hands.
- 30:28He puts Eby through the ringer trying to berate her
- 30:31and really getting to move her past ear.
- 30:36Exactly.
- 30:37So he puts these little notes in her cell.
- 30:40Firstly, sheaves her head.
- 30:42Natalie Portman actually had her head shaved
- 30:45for this role.
- 30:46And it's incredible.
- 30:47I remember that was so crazy.
- 30:49Oh my God.
- 30:50So good.
- 30:51And she doesn't know that this is being staged.
- 30:54She thinks that she's actually being tortured,
- 30:56being questioned, being held.
- 30:59A guard keeps coming in and saying,
- 31:01tell us the whereabouts of code name V.
- 31:03Tell us anything.
- 31:04And we'll set you free if you just tell us anything
- 31:06you know about him.
- 31:08She won't say anything.
- 31:10And she keeps reading this letter that she finds, right?
- 31:13Written by this lesbian woman who is being held in this cell.
- 31:19Oh my God.
- 31:20Just beautiful, hard breaking letter.
- 31:22Oh my God of just her meeting her wife and falling in love
- 31:26and coming out and then getting sent away for it.
- 31:30It's a real and frank moment.
- 31:32Yeah.
- 31:33The story of someone who is happy and then taken.
- 31:38And again, there are so many callbacks
- 31:40and parallels to those things.
- 31:43It's a little movie within a movie.
- 31:45We get to see this woman as a child realizing
- 31:49that she's like squirrels and then meeting her wife
- 31:52and then them having time together.
- 31:55Did you catch it?
- 31:56That she said that her wife and her grew roses in the window.
- 32:00And that's the same rose that V leaves
- 32:02in all of his victims.
- 32:03Oh my gosh.
- 32:05Yeah.
- 32:05And ultimately Natalie Portman, EV,
- 32:09refuses to give up V, even though she is going to be killed
- 32:14and shot behind the chemical sheds.
- 32:18This letter, this really is what sets her of being like,
- 32:22you know what, fuck this, fuck this system, this society.
- 32:26Like she got to really read the impact
- 32:29of her actual human of what this is doing, right?
- 32:33Like it's easy to, when you're a citizen, fall in line
- 32:37or you don't know what to do, which is,
- 32:39I feel like what a lot of us feel right now, right?
- 32:41Like it's hard.
- 32:42Like what do I do?
- 32:43What can I do that changes things?
- 32:46And you know, when she really read the letter from this woman
- 32:49who was like, I'm going to die here
- 32:51and this is my last words.
- 32:53She's like, all right, that's what really flips the switch
- 32:55in her head.
- 32:56So when the guard comes and says, well, you have no fear anymore.
- 33:00Because she's like, yeah, thanks.
- 33:02I'd rather die.
- 33:03He takes her out.
- 33:06And we realize, oh, it was a V the whole time trying to say,
- 33:11he's like, you told me you didn't want to feel any fear anymore
- 33:14like your parents, you don't need more.
- 33:17At first she's pissed because she's like,
- 33:19you shave my head, bro.
- 33:21I had gorgeous hair.
- 33:22And I think it was more in the torture.
- 33:26No, she's like, but I spent years growing this.
- 33:30Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 33:31It was a second point.
- 33:33It was the torture.
- 33:34It was the torture.
- 33:36No, I think that this, like it really is an argument
- 33:41and you become what you're fighting
- 33:46and you to have that happen to you.
- 33:50Like I think it is really an interesting argument
- 33:52of like hurt people, hurt people, right?
- 33:55Yeah.
- 33:56We hear that all the time.
- 33:57And V ultimately becomes what was done to him
- 34:02and what catapulted him into this moment, right?
- 34:04And he--
- 34:05People say like he's a monster, he's a monster.
- 34:08And you know, she says to him,
- 34:09you're a people.
- 34:11Yeah.
- 34:12And V is a very complex character, right?
- 34:15You're rooting for him the entire time.
- 34:17But like obviously he's making morally ambiguous decisions,
- 34:22right?
- 34:23Or like decisions that we say are bad or evil.
- 34:26Like he's murdering people.
- 34:28He's breaking to people's houses and killing them.
- 34:31Do the ins justify the means?
- 34:33Like--
- 34:34Yes.
- 34:34I think--
- 34:35It's a real argument in that.
- 34:36Yeah, exactly.
- 34:37And you know, he keeps saying you can't kill an idea, right?
- 34:42And governments should be afraid of their people.
- 34:44People shouldn't be afraid of their government.
- 34:46So I think even he's all along, like, I will be this symbol.
- 34:50I will take on these sins.
- 34:52I will do these evil things so that other people
- 34:55can live a life outside of tyranny, right?
- 34:57He's willing to become the monster if it means
- 35:00that society can change.
- 35:02Because he's like, they already--
- 35:03Look at what are they already fucking did to me, right?
- 35:05He's like, I'm going full in.
- 35:06I'm committing myself to this, and it kills me.
- 35:09Yeah, I think there's a really beautiful quote where he said,
- 35:13like, what was done to me was monstrous.
- 35:16So I became a monster.
- 35:18Yeah.
- 35:19Yeah.
- 35:20And it's time--
- 35:21It really is like such a thought-provoking movie
- 35:24in that where it is, like you said,
- 35:28does he unjustify the means?
- 35:30And ultimately, like, from this moment on, we just go through
- 35:36various scenes, but at the end, it becomes the night.
- 35:41So it becomes November 4, almost November 5.
- 35:44One of my favorite parts of this maybe,
- 35:46he is mailed out thousands of guy-fawks masks to everybody,
- 35:51right?
- 35:51So that everybody is part of the movement.
- 35:53Everybody is a symbol.
- 35:55It's like, who is who?
- 35:57At a certain point, it's collective power.
- 36:00I also love that throughout the movie,
- 36:02we see a little girl watching the news and watching the--
- 36:07and kind of getting-- you see her slowly get radicalized.
- 36:11And at a certain point, you see her--
- 36:13She gets to kill.
- 36:14Yeah.
- 36:15She's wearing the mask and spray painting.
- 36:17Yeah, and somebody shoots her, which has that uprising.
- 36:21Everyone sees her be murdered in the soul.
- 36:23She's killed by ice.
- 36:25What?
- 36:26I mean, I'm sorry.
- 36:26The finger-maning.
- 36:28In the beginning.
- 36:29They do that to the school.
- 36:32Right?
- 36:32And so nothing gets people more angry than harming a child.
- 36:38So we see these echoes of what they manufactured
- 36:44and what V is doing in power--
- 36:47The people are taking back.
- 36:48Yes.
- 36:49Yeah.
- 36:50But it is him echoing what they did in so many ways,
- 36:56in so many actions.
- 36:57But yeah, it really is quite thought-provoking.
- 37:01Those moments, the murder of a child,
- 37:03really sends people into less fear, right?
- 37:08Yeah.
- 37:08With the murdering children on the streets
- 37:11of their murdering civilians for simply being there, again,
- 37:14call back to where we are today.
- 37:16Exactly.
- 37:16And protesting and having a freedom of speech.
- 37:20People are taking back protesting again.
- 37:23And a lot of them are getting arrested,
- 37:26being murdered, being disappeared.
- 37:28But the numbers keep growing, right?
- 37:30And especially everybody has these masks
- 37:32where they're anonymous, right?
- 37:35Everybody looks the same.
- 37:37And we see the powers that be really like, OK,
- 37:40we need to start manufacturing the new man
- 37:42to build his back, things are coming.
- 37:45Like, Roy Ambracus in Shambles.
- 37:48And it's nobody believes it anymore.
- 37:51Exactly.
- 37:52I loved that point, too, where they were like,
- 37:54get this back under control.
- 37:56And then we see the news like, you guys need us.
- 37:58See?
- 37:59See, look at all this bad shit that's happening.
- 38:00And nobody really wants to see us.
- 38:02And everyone's like, yeah, I'm a man.
- 38:05Yeah.
- 38:06And ultimately, that leads us to the 9th of November 4th,
- 38:12leading into November 5th, a year later.
- 38:14And they are coming back.
- 38:17Evie comes back to be.
- 38:18She's left ever and tortured her.
- 38:20And she comes back to be.
- 38:22And they have this really kind of will
- 38:24they want their love story moments throughout.
- 38:27Which is quite beautiful.
- 38:29I love that it's like a little just hint of romance
- 38:32under the movie, right?
- 38:33It's not overtly sexual tension romance.
- 38:37It's this like respect that they feel for each other
- 38:40throughout the whole movie.
- 38:42And listen, don't torture a woman.
- 38:46Don't kidnap a torture woman to radicalize her.
- 38:50Yeah.
- 38:50Listen.
- 38:50Yeah.
- 38:51It-- within the movie, it works.
- 38:54And she absolutely is full in now.
- 38:59She is walking her out without fear.
- 39:01She's got her shaved head.
- 39:03Her old co-workers don't recognize her.
- 39:05She goes back to be.
- 39:06And it's like tonight's your big night.
- 39:07And she is in it.
- 39:10It is her job.
- 39:10Well, sort of.
- 39:11So I think it's kind of interesting.
- 39:13So basically, at the--
- 39:16at this moment, he's planned everything.
- 39:18Everything is in place to blow up Parliament.
- 39:22He's taken over like an old subway station
- 39:24that they actually shut down.
- 39:25It's within the quarantine zone.
- 39:27And he tells her that it's up to the next generation
- 39:30to fix this.
- 39:31Yeah.
- 39:31My generation is what is wrong and has ultimately
- 39:35set the stage, right?
- 39:37But it is a board decision if you want to do this, right?
- 39:42I have everything.
- 39:43I have the explosives.
- 39:45Yep.
- 39:45If you want to pull the lever on this train
- 39:47and send it to Parliament, do it.
- 39:49Yes.
- 39:50If you don't--
- 39:50He's leaving it.
- 39:50No problem.
- 39:51Totally up to her, which is just so--
- 39:55he already knew he was going to die.
- 39:56He told her, nope.
- 39:58This is where I'm ending here.
- 40:00I'm done.
- 40:01She tries to convince him not to basically throw away his life.
- 40:05But he's like, I'm a symbol.
- 40:07Now it's up to, like you said, the next generation
- 40:09to carry this on.
- 40:11Once we get through tonight, and Parliament is blown up,
- 40:14she asks some in the beginning.
- 40:16You really think blowing up a building
- 40:17is going to change everything.
- 40:20And he's like, this is a symbol.
- 40:22This isn't uprising.
- 40:23Yep.
- 40:24They kill the chancellor.
- 40:28They kill the chancellor.
- 40:29They ultimately kill me.
- 40:30Yes.
- 40:31They do.
- 40:31V does die.
- 40:32He comes back to her.
- 40:35He spends his dying moment with her.
- 40:37She kisses the mask.
- 40:39No, it's so cute.
- 40:40As all of this is happening, we see all of the citizens
- 40:43of Britain coming out of their houses
- 40:45with these guy-fox masses.
- 40:47Yeah.
- 40:48And masks.
- 40:49Masks and foxes.
- 40:50And masks.
- 40:51And foxes, and foxes, and foxes.
- 40:53Yeah, with these guy-fox masks.
- 40:54And they are marching in the street.
- 40:56We see also really kind of what we saw in DC, in America,
- 41:01happening where the US military, the British military,
- 41:06at this time, is all set up to stop these counter protests.
- 41:11They are lining streets.
- 41:12But they're getting no order.
- 41:13They're lining pockets.
- 41:14Because everyone's dead.
- 41:15Yeah.
- 41:16Because everyone is dead, ultimately.
- 41:18V has stopped this.
- 41:21They don't receive any orders to shoot, to stop, to subdue.
- 41:27So they just have to let the power protestors on through.
- 41:30Well, the military ultimately makes a choice.
- 41:33I think if one person had fired, it would
- 41:36have set off a chain of events.
- 41:38That's true.
- 41:39I didn't think about that.
- 41:40They're standing perfectly still, because they don't
- 41:42have orders.
- 41:43But I think they made that choice.
- 41:46They see the mob of people walking towards them,
- 41:48all wearing the exact same mask.
- 41:50And at that point, you're like, well, God, I don't know who's
- 41:52who.
- 41:53I don't know who's a child.
- 41:54I don't know.
- 41:55Yeah.
- 41:55Exactly.
- 41:56We're not getting any orders.
- 41:58And they're so used to following orders at this point
- 42:01that they're like, can they even function without being
- 42:04told what to do?
- 42:05Spoiler.
- 42:06Ultimately.
- 42:07The element blows up.
- 42:08Yeah.
- 42:09As V dies in EV's arms, she puts him onto the train, but have
- 42:16all the explosives, and pulls the lever, right?
- 42:19I also love that the cop who's been trying to catch them
- 42:22the whole time, we slowly see him realizing
- 42:25throughout the movie that the government is corrupt, the
- 42:28government's the one who planned all of the attacks and all
- 42:31of the diseases in order to gain control.
- 42:34And he has the opportunity to shoot EV.
- 42:37And he doesn't.
- 42:39He's just like, you know what?
- 42:40Yeah.
- 42:41So stop it off.
- 42:42Yeah.
- 42:43Yep.
- 42:44And he doesn't.
- 42:45He lets her do it because he realizes, you know what?
- 42:47This is our governments.
- 42:49Yeah.
- 42:50You know, we need there needs to be a change, essentially.
- 42:51Yeah.
- 42:52And I think this movie is just so beautiful.
- 42:54Like we've talked about a lot of the different themes with
- 42:57it, but yeah, I mean, you look at power and tyranny, like the
- 43:02individual versus the state.
- 43:04And I think that there's so many good moments within this movie
- 43:08that we can call back to the past, the present, and hopefully
- 43:12not our future, but 100%.
- 43:15Just, you know, complicity versus complacency, right?
- 43:18The film is critical, not just on the regime, but also people
- 43:21who let it happen and just sit by, right?
- 43:24So EV represents ordinary citizens who stay quiet out of fear
- 43:29and then eventually break out of that passivity, right?
- 43:32And it's normal to be afraid and not
- 43:33to do in the face of people who might kill you, right?
- 43:37But it's just the collective power that we all have when we
- 43:40join forces, we can really make these changes.
- 43:43It's up to us to save us at the end of the day, right?
- 43:46Because the powers that we aren't going to do, whether they're
- 43:49the ones who are doing all of this, they're the ones who are
- 43:52manufacturing all of the disasters and making us all scared
- 43:57and complacent and falling back on, oh, OK, OK, god, I
- 44:01don't want to die.
- 44:02But yeah, at the end of the day, no one's going to save us.
- 44:06I think this movie is so beautiful because ultimately,
- 44:10it's the statement of ideas are the ultimate weapon.
- 44:14And what the film is trying to say here, governments
- 44:18can kill people, but they can't kill an idea.
- 44:21And symbols mean a lot, right?
- 44:23And so it's really asking what is our moral obligation
- 44:27to each other?
- 44:28And I think that's exactly--
- 44:29Exactly.
- 44:29--that's quite beautiful.
- 44:30And yeah, I mean, I think we've talked quite a bit about the movie.
- 44:34It's all from the symbols within it.
- 44:37But do you want to talk a little bit about what we might get
- 44:39for a--
- 44:41Yes, per vendetta world?
- 44:43So it looks like, as of now, that a TV show is in development
- 44:47at HBO.
- 44:49It will be produced by DC Studios, James Gunn,
- 44:52and Peter Safran.
- 44:54The project is a new adaptation of the Alan War graphic novel
- 44:58with writer Pete Jackson, not Peter Jackson, attached to the series.
- 45:03So it is set in the dystopian future,
- 45:05Britain.
- 45:06Maybe it'll be more accurate or closer to Alan
- 45:10Moore's original piece because it is a series.
- 45:13They have more time.
- 45:14I really hope they show the initial days and how it felt.
- 45:21Like how the Britain we know today felt.
- 45:24Exactly.
- 45:25I loved that about when I stopped watching Handmaid's Tale
- 45:29because it just fell too close to home.
- 45:32But when I first watched it, I really
- 45:34liked how it showed the initial downfall of the United States.
- 45:38And that--
- 45:39what is it?
- 45:40A lobster boiling in water doesn't know that it's dying until it's too late.
- 45:45So they just slowly keep turning the heat up.
- 45:48And one day the government falls, and then, OK, we're in fascism.
- 45:52Oh, yep.
- 45:53Oh, yeah.
- 45:55So yeah, such a beautiful movie.
- 45:58Yes.
- 45:59So I hope that the HBO series happens.
- 46:02And I hope that it's really good.
- 46:03James Gunn is great.
- 46:05He can do serious work and more goofy works.
- 46:08I hope they lean into the series here.
- 46:11And overall, I really recommend this movie to anybody.
- 46:15It's anti-fascist as fuck.
- 46:17It is a warning against authoritarianism
- 46:20and the creeping fascism that kind of resonates strongly
- 46:23today.
- 46:24And what--
- 46:25once, like you mentioned, Olivia felt like a dystopian scenario
- 46:29that'll never happen is stuff that's kind of we see creeping slowly
- 46:34in.
- 46:34So this is my favorite movie of all time.
- 46:37Anytime anyone asks me what my favorite movie is,
- 46:40it is V for Vendetta, and has been for the last 20 years.
- 46:45So I think that is going to wrap us up.
- 46:47I really think-- even though we said the entire plot here,
- 46:51if you haven't seen it, please watch it.
- 46:53It's beautiful.
- 46:55And if you haven't watched it in a while,
- 46:56like we haven't, I haven't watched it in years,
- 46:59even though it's my favorite, just because it is so relevant.
- 47:05Sometimes you're like, I don't know if I can do it.
- 47:07But--
- 47:07Spooky.
- 47:08Rewatch it.
