- 0:00You never win an argument. There's a story behind that.
- 0:06This is your daily message from Chamber 1175 to upgrade your
- 0:10mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:13Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:15yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:17Ethel Caterham. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:20You may think holding your ground means arguing for it, but
- 0:23upgraded thinking knows you can decline the argument and hold
- 0:26your ground. Here's the story.
- 0:31Ethel Caterham was born in Hampshire village, England, on
- 0:33August 21st, 19 O 9. Edward the Seventh was on the
- 0:37throne, the great, great grandfather of the current king.
- 0:40She was the 7th of eight children.
- 0:42At 18, she took a job as a nanny for a British family living in
- 0:46India. She spent three years on the
- 0:48subcontinent. That's where she met Norman, an
- 0:51officer in the British Army. She buried him in 1976.
- 0:55Fifty years ago. That was the year I was born.
- 0:59She's buried both of her daughters.
- 1:01She has three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
- 1:04And last Friday, she turned 117. She is the oldest living person
- 1:11on earth and the first person from Britain ever to reach that
- 1:14number. Reporters ask her the same
- 1:16question. They ask everybody who gets that
- 1:18far. What's the secret?
- 1:21Here's what she said. She's non confrontational.
- 1:24She never argues with anyone. She listens and then she does
- 1:29what she likes. Most people only hear the first
- 1:31half. Never argue.
- 1:33Sounds like being agreeable, like you're a doormat.
- 1:36Sounds like folding. It sounds like a woman who spent
- 1:39117 years going along to get along.
- 1:43That's not what she said. She said she never argues.
- 1:47She did not say she gives in. She listens to you all the way
- 1:51to the end. And then she does exactly what
- 1:53she was going to do. She didn't avoid the conflict,
- 1:56but she stopped needing to win. Dale Carnegie said it a
- 2:00different way. Quote, you can't win an
- 2:03argument. You can't because if you lose
- 2:06it, you'll lose it. And if you win it, you'll lose
- 2:08it. In quote, Rob Gilbert says it in
- 2:11one line. If you win an argument, you'll
- 2:14lose. A friend, Ethel Kaderum, worked
- 2:17that out sometime before the Second World War, and she's been
- 2:20running the experiment ever since.
- 2:23Here's what an argument cost you Your afternoon, your sleep, your
- 2:28blood pressure. Sometimes the relationship.
- 2:32And at the end of it, the other person believes exactly what
- 2:35they believed when you started. And here's what it cost you to
- 2:38listen all the way through and then go and do the right thing
- 2:42anyway. Nothing.
- 2:44It cost you nothing. There are two kinds of people in
- 2:47a disagreement, the one who needs to be agreed with and the
- 2:52one who just goes and does the right thing.
- 2:56I'm working on being the second one.
- 2:58Which of the two are you? The better story to tell
- 3:01yourself is I don't have to win the argument to hold my ground.
- 3:06You've been telling yourself that if you don't argue, you
- 3:09lose. You have that backwards.
- 3:12The argument is the loss. The quiet decision is the win.
- 3:17Somebody in your life is going to hold out the bait today.
- 3:21Don't take it. Listen all the way to the end
- 3:24and then go do what you know is right.
- 3:27Tell me a story of an argument you walked away from to from
