- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm your host, Jean Stothert, and Peyton Highlock, my producer,
- 0:03Speaker 1: is also here this morning.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Good morning, Peyton.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Good morning, Jean.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We're just happy in this studio today because it's so
- 0:10Speaker 1: nice out, even though Lucy Chapman put dripping blood all
- 0:14Speaker 1: over our window.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Well, and she has these skeleton hands out there, and
- 0:19Speaker 3: then there's an eyeball that's motioned.
- 0:24Speaker 1: I've noticed all of this. Lucy's been busy decorating this
- 0:28Speaker 1: morning for Halloween. But anyway, it's a great day in
- 0:31Speaker 1: Omaha and we want to thank you for being with
- 0:34Speaker 1: us today.
- 0:35Speaker 2: We want to hear from you. We want to get
- 0:36Speaker 2: your feedback.
- 0:37Speaker 1: We want to hear your comments, concerns, questions, complaints. Anything goes, city, state, national,
- 0:42Speaker 1: the world. And we will have plenty of guests like
- 0:45Speaker 1: we had yesterday. We don't have a guest today. However,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I think we have plenty to talk about. about what
- 0:52Speaker 1: Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hansen said yesterday. We had calls
- 0:55Speaker 1: that were stacked up that we didn't get to. But
- 0:58Speaker 1: you're also going to hear plenty of opinions from me.
- 1:01Speaker 1: But it is your chance to speak up and sound off.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Send your emails to comment at kfab.com. Call us at 402-558-1110.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Or leave us a recorded message on the talkback mic,
- 1:12Speaker 1: and we'll play it on the air.
- 1:13Speaker 2: But we're happy that you are with us today.
- 1:16Speaker 1: And I love doing this, but I'm going to be
- 1:18Speaker 1: able to say, Scott Voorhees made a mistake. Our dad, Scott,
- 1:22Speaker 1: he made a mistake this morning, and he did say
- 1:24Speaker 1: that Lynn Waltz was going to be on our show, Peyton, today.
- 1:28Speaker 1: And that is next Tuesday, the 13th, is when she's
- 1:31Speaker 1: going to be on. Hopefully, as she did say, that
- 1:34Speaker 1: they will get her in the studio. So that'll be
- 1:36Speaker 1: a fun interview. I want you all to listen. I'm
- 1:38Speaker 1: going to ask her the hard questions like I ask
- 1:40Speaker 1: everybody else, including Governor Pillen. And you then make your
- 1:45Speaker 1: decision on who you think should be elected in this
- 1:50Speaker 1: election that.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Is four weeks from today.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And what is so important, as I have said from
- 1:57Speaker 1: the very beginning, is that people are informed, people understand
- 2:01Speaker 1: who these candidates are, what they stand for, where the
- 2:05Speaker 1: truth is, where the truth isn't, because honest to gosh,
- 2:08Speaker 1: right now, The majority of these commercials that you hear
- 2:12Speaker 1: on the radio and on TV are meant to confuse you.
- 2:16Speaker 1: And that's when– this is when the rubber hits the road,
- 2:19Speaker 1: but this is when campaigns and elections can get so
- 2:23Speaker 1: frustrating because it used to be, boy, if I heard
- 2:25Speaker 1: it on TV or read it in the World Herald,
- 2:28Speaker 1: it must be true.
- 2:29Speaker 2: But it's not anymore.
- 2:30Speaker 1: And so I want to give the opportunity for– any
- 2:34Speaker 1: of the candidates to come on this show. Like just recently,
- 2:38Speaker 1: we had PJ Morgan from the Douglas County Board. There's
- 2:40Speaker 1: a few more Douglas County Board candidates. Lots of talk
- 2:44Speaker 1: lately that I'd like to have on this show too,
- 2:47Speaker 1: but I'm not sure we're going to get to that.
- 2:49Speaker 1: If you didn't hear Scott this morning, there are seven
- 2:54Speaker 1: members of the Douglas County Board right now.
- 2:56Speaker 2: It's Roger Garcia. I'm going to go down by their district. One, two, three, four.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Roger Garcia, one. Jim Cavanaugh, two. Chris Rogers, three.
- 3:04Speaker 1: P.J.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Morgan, four.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Brian Fahey is five. Marianne Borgeson, six. And John Friend
- 3:08Speaker 1: is seven. However, Jim Cavanaugh in two is not running again.
- 3:15Speaker 1: He's not running again. Marianne Borgeson in six is not
- 3:18Speaker 1: running again. And District 2, Douglas County District 2, Jim
- 3:25Speaker 1: Cavanaugh's seat, there's one person that's unopposed, Whitney Hanson. She's
- 3:28Speaker 1: been getting a lot of media lately. We're going to
- 3:31Speaker 1: talk about her maybe tomorrow. But also PJ Morgan now
- 3:35Speaker 1: is unopposed in four, so he will be reelected. And
- 3:39Speaker 1: then Marianne Borgeson's, there are two candidates in that race too.
- 3:44Speaker 1: This is important. Douglas County Board, so many people. really
- 3:50Speaker 1: don't even know who their Douglas County Board members are.
- 3:53Speaker 1: And that's why I wanted to have PJ Morgan on
- 3:55Speaker 1: last week, because I wanted to talk what the main
- 3:59Speaker 1: responsibilities of the Douglas County Board was. And I really
- 4:02Speaker 1: stressed when PJ Morgan, former mayor, boy, he's had just
- 4:08Speaker 1: an incredible career as far as politics and business go.
- 4:12Speaker 1: But I said, you know, I wanted to make sure
- 4:14Speaker 1: people understand that the Douglas County Board, they're policymakers. They're
- 4:17Speaker 1: not lawmakers. Lawmakers are the Omaha City Council. They can
- 4:20Speaker 1: make laws. The Douglas County Board cannot. But I wanted
- 4:23Speaker 1: to make sure that people understood what their authority was.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And one of the things that PJ said, and we
- 4:31Speaker 1: know now by talking to Sheriff Aaron Hansen yesterday, that
- 4:35Speaker 1: one of the responsibilities of the Douglas County Board is
- 4:39Speaker 1: to run the jail. Now, keep in mind, Douglas County
- 4:43Speaker 1: Corrections is downtown.
- 4:45Speaker 2: That is our jail.
- 4:46Speaker 1: At any given time, there can be up to 1,000
- 4:49Speaker 1: people that are held in that jail.
- 4:52Speaker 2: It is big. It is a big area.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And when we have hardened criminals that are being prosecuted,
- 4:58Speaker 1: for instance, Nico Jenkins, Dr. Anthony Garcia, and many others,
- 5:02Speaker 1: they were held in Douglas County Corrections. That is the jail.
- 5:06Speaker 1: The city of Omaha does not have a jail. So
- 5:09Speaker 1: the city of Omaha, Omaha Police Department, uses Douglas County Corrections. Now,
- 5:14Speaker 1: I want to make this very, very clear because it
- 5:16Speaker 1: came out. Very clear yesterday was Sheriff Aaron Hansen. He
- 5:20Speaker 1: does not run the jail, okay? He said yesterday that
- 5:24Speaker 1: with this case that we just talked about that happened
- 5:27Speaker 1: on Sunday afternoon with Jose Ortega Romero and how he
- 5:33Speaker 1: ran a red light. He was an illegal, ran into
- 5:37Speaker 1: a 70-year-old man's car and killed him. And he went
- 5:41Speaker 1: through how they contacted ICE, Douglas County Sheriff's Department contacted ICE.
- 5:48Speaker 1: ICE then contacted them a little bit later on, shortly
- 5:51Speaker 1: after midnight that day. This happened almost 4 o'clock in
- 5:54Speaker 1: the afternoon. Douglas County Sheriff's Department got contacted right after
- 5:58Speaker 1: midnight and said he had posted Bond. He was despite
- 6:02Speaker 1: on a 48-hour hold from ICE, but since he posted Bond,
- 6:06Speaker 1: they said they were told they had four hours to.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Either pick him up or he would be released immediately.
- 6:14Speaker 1: When I questioned Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hansen, it came
- 6:17Speaker 1: very clear, which I will tell you the truth, I
- 6:20Speaker 1: was not aware of, that Douglas County Board running the
- 6:24Speaker 1: jail has made a decision that they will not cooperate
- 6:28Speaker 1: with ICE.
- 6:29Speaker 2: They will not.
- 6:30Speaker 1: So that essentially makes, because of that decision by the
- 6:34Speaker 1: Douglas County Board, that makes Douglas County a sanctuary county.
- 6:40Speaker 1: And I want to make that clear. I said all
- 6:43Speaker 1: the time when I was mayor, the city of Omaha,
- 6:46Speaker 1: which is in Douglas County, but as long as I
- 6:48Speaker 1: was mayor, the city of Omaha would not be a
- 6:50Speaker 1: sanctuary city. And my interactions were obviously with the Omaha
- 6:55Speaker 1: Police Department and the chief and the deputies with Omaha Police,
- 6:59Speaker 1: not the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
- 7:01Speaker 2: They're under the county.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Although Sheriff Hansen is elected, Don Klein is elected Douglas
- 7:06Speaker 1: County attorney. But my interaction with the Omaha Police Department
- 7:11Speaker 1: and with Todd Schmader, the agreement was, is that they
- 7:14Speaker 1: would work in collaboration with ICE. They are not ICE agents,
- 7:19Speaker 1: the Omaha Police Department. They do not go door to
- 7:22Speaker 1: door checking legal status. If somebody is speeding and they
- 7:25Speaker 1: pick them up, they do not check legal status.
- 7:28Speaker 2: If a crime has been committed, they do.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Check legal status and they work in collaboration with ICE,
- 7:36Speaker 1: but they are not That's what my position was and
- 7:40Speaker 1: that's what the Omaha Police Department position was. I was
- 7:44Speaker 1: a bit surprised to find out that the Douglas County
- 7:46Speaker 1: Board has made a decision not to cooperate.
- 7:50Speaker 3: With ICE.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Therefore, this man, Sunday afternoon, that killed somebody that was illegal,
- 7:57Speaker 1: did not have a driver's license, he was on an
- 8:00Speaker 1: ICE hold, but after he posted bond, they gave him
- 8:03Speaker 1: four hours to pick him up or he would be released.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And then I brought up a case in the past
- 8:09Speaker 1: that I think we all knew about, and that was
- 8:12Speaker 1: with Mayha golly, that was several years ago. That was
- 8:17Speaker 1: in 2016, I believe, who killed 21-year-old Sarah Root while
- 8:23Speaker 1: his car crashed into her while he was driving drunk.
- 8:27Speaker 1: And I mean, as soon as he posted bond, he
- 8:30Speaker 1: was out.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Of the country.
- 8:31Speaker 1: And you could bet that the same thing would have
- 8:33Speaker 1: happened with Ortega Romero if that is the case. Luckily,
- 8:38Speaker 1: that the Douglas County Sheriff and Department had the Nebraska
- 8:43Speaker 1: State Patrol and Sarpy County government for their partnership in helping,
- 8:48Speaker 1: in my opinion, to keep our community safe, definitely. And
- 8:52Speaker 1: they were able to pick up Ortega Romero. And so
- 8:55Speaker 1: they have him in custody because both the Nebraska State
- 8:59Speaker 1: Patrol and Sarpy County government has agreed, like the city
- 9:04Speaker 1: of Omaha had agreed, to work in collaboration with ICE. Again,
- 9:08Speaker 1: that doesn't mean they're ICE agents, but that means if
- 9:12Speaker 1: they have somebody on an ICE hold to be detained,
- 9:15Speaker 1: they will cooperate with them. This is really– I want
- 9:19Speaker 1: to know what everybody really has to think about this. Again,
- 9:24Speaker 1: there's an election coming up. There are three people. on
- 9:27Speaker 1: the Douglas County Board up for re-election.
- 9:30Speaker 2: P.J.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Morgan will get re-elected because he now is unopposed. But
- 9:34Speaker 1: we really have to look at these. Sometimes these are
- 9:36Speaker 1: even considered down-ballot candidates. People don't even really pay much
- 9:41Speaker 1: attention to the Douglas County Board. But these are important positions, too.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Something that I would just like to acknowledge as well,
- 9:49Speaker 3: when it comes to a sanctuary city, is there's no
- 9:52Speaker 3: legal definition of a sanctuary city. There's no proclamation that
- 9:57Speaker 3: you have to make in order to be considered one.
- 10:00Speaker 3: And what Eugene and Sheriff Aaron Hansen alluded to yesterday
- 10:05Speaker 3: is maybe the city of Omaha hasn't come out and said, oh,
- 10:09Speaker 3: we're a sanctuary city, but it's the actions. No, not
- 10:13Speaker 3: the city of Omaha.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I know.
- 10:15Speaker 3: But what I'm saying is the actions from the county
- 10:17Speaker 3: board make you start to scratch your head and say, okay,
- 10:20Speaker 3: is this becoming a sanctuary city because of the actions
- 10:23Speaker 3: of the board, not because of a proclamation from anybody?
- 10:27Speaker 4: Right.
- 10:27Speaker 1: And it's, you know, a sanctuary city is, I mean,
- 10:29Speaker 1: you said there's no actual category, I guess is what
- 10:34Speaker 1: you're saying, Peyton. But there is a definition of a
- 10:37Speaker 1: sanctuary city. And a sanctuary city is a municipality that
- 10:40Speaker 1: limits or denies its cooperation with national government in enforcing
- 10:45Speaker 1: immigration law.
- 10:47Speaker 2: That's what it is about.
- 10:49Speaker 1: So a city is either going to work in cooperation
- 10:52Speaker 1: with national government, which includes ICE, which is, you know,
- 10:56Speaker 1: as we know, immigration's custom enforcement. That's what they're there for.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Or they will say, we will not. The question is,
- 11:05Speaker 1: if they say we will not, are they following the law?
- 11:08Speaker 1: And what does that mean for you? I mean, what
- 11:11Speaker 1: does that mean for you if we try to explain
- 11:14Speaker 1: what a sanctuary city is and to say the county
- 11:16Speaker 1: you live in? will not cooperate with the federal government
- 11:20Speaker 1: on this issue.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Now, I will say this.
- 11:23Speaker 1: If anyone in the county is listening and anybody in
- 11:27Speaker 1: the county disagrees with me, welcome.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Them on the show.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I mean, I welcome them on the show to talk
- 11:34Speaker 1: about what their position is and what their position is
- 11:38Speaker 1: with the jail. And to say that even if they
- 11:41Speaker 1: are on a 48– now, even that's not long. A
- 11:44Speaker 1: 48-hour ice hold or detainment is not long. But to
- 11:49Speaker 1: get a call at midnight and say you got four
- 11:51Speaker 1: hours to pick this guy up, he posted bond, or
- 11:54Speaker 1: we're letting him out and he killed somebody? I mean,
- 11:59Speaker 1: this is something that I think we need to pay
- 12:02Speaker 1: a lot of attention to. And does this make our
- 12:06Speaker 1: city and our county safer if we do work? Now,
- 12:09Speaker 1: of course, with ICE and the federal government now, of course,
- 12:13Speaker 1: bad rap with politics right now towards ICE. Bad rap
- 12:17Speaker 1: in politics now towards the police. I mean, there are
- 12:20Speaker 1: many that are saying we need to defund and disassemble
- 12:23Speaker 1: our police departments, get away from our prisons. We need
- 12:27Speaker 1: to get rid of them all. I mean, that is
- 12:29Speaker 1: being said out there. And I will tell you this
- 12:31Speaker 1: right now. You cannot, absolutely cannot have a safe city
- 12:35Speaker 1: without law enforcement.
- 12:36Speaker 2: You cannot. You cannot.
- 12:37Speaker 1: And so for these people that are out there saying
- 12:40Speaker 1: disassemble and defund all the police department across the country
- 12:45Speaker 1: and just have social workers work, well, you know, in
- 12:49Speaker 1: a utopia, in a perfect world, even that, I doubt it.
- 12:54Speaker 1: You have to have some sort of law enforcement. Laws
- 12:58Speaker 1: are there to follow, and you need someone to help
- 13:01Speaker 1: enforce those laws, and people every single day break those laws.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Some don't hurt you. Some, Peyton, if somebody's going 10
- 13:08Speaker 1: miles over the speed limit, they're breaking the law. But
- 13:10Speaker 1: does that really– has that hurt you?
- 13:12Speaker 5: No.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Somebody might have had two drinks and is driving. Did
- 13:16Speaker 2: that hurt you?
- 13:16Speaker 4: No.
- 13:17Speaker 2: But could it? Yes. And it could kill you too.
- 13:20Speaker 1: And I think when we find out– if you were
- 13:22Speaker 1: a member of this 70-year-old gentleman that got hit on
- 13:27Speaker 1: Sunday afternoon on a beautiful day driving in his– His
- 13:31Speaker 1: Portia probably retired and is just living the dream. If
- 13:35Speaker 1: you are his family, can you imagine the grief they're
- 13:38Speaker 1: going through now?
- 13:40Speaker 3: Couldn't even imagine. And you asked Gene for some comments
- 13:43Speaker 3: you wanted to hear from the listeners, and here it is.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Let's fire off some phone calls here on this segment.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Gene Stothert, host of the KFAB Comment Line, 402-558-1110. Chuck,
- 13:55Speaker 3: welcome to the KFAB Comment Line. You are live with
- 13:57Speaker 3: Gene Stothert.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Good morning, Chuck. Thank you.
- 14:01Speaker 5: Good morning. You asked for comments on ICE. I've got
- 14:04Speaker 5: some for you.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Good.
- 14:06Speaker 5: So I don't know if you were in West Omaha
- 14:08Speaker 5: when these two ICE agents with masks went to a
- 14:12Speaker 5: West Omaha restaurant and tackled some guy in front of children,
- 14:17Speaker 5: in front of families having their dinner. These people were
- 14:22Speaker 5: thugs that were in there. They were ICE agents. Nobody
- 14:27Speaker 5: really knew who they were.
- 14:29Speaker 3: They were.
- 14:31Speaker 5: If you've studied history about Germany and the Gestapo, that's
- 14:36Speaker 5: kind of what it is. Okay, you weren't there. There
- 14:39Speaker 5: were a lot of people there with children. Yeah, no,
- 14:41Speaker 5: I wasn't there. The other example I have for you
- 14:45Speaker 5: is South Omaha Packinghouse. Women working there with green cards
- 14:51Speaker 5: that have families that have worked there for 20 years
- 14:55Speaker 5: have ICE go in there arrest them, having no clue
- 15:00Speaker 5: whether they're legal or not, and they take them to
- 15:04Speaker 5: Cornhusker Clink. I don't know if you read the World Herald,
- 15:08Speaker 5: but you would have seen the picture of 40 of
- 15:11Speaker 5: these women that were in chains around their legs with
- 15:18Speaker 5: striped outfits on, and they were taking photos of these people,
- 15:23Speaker 5: making fun of them, demonizing them, how you are demonizing
- 15:27Speaker 5: immigrants right now. I know other people, white people, who
- 15:33Speaker 5: have killed people driving. It's called manslaughter. It's a type
- 15:38Speaker 5: of murder. They posted bombs. They went home. They were
- 15:43Speaker 5: not deported. They were treated under the Constitution. So this
- 15:48Speaker 5: is the kind of rhetoric you're promoting. And when you're
- 15:52Speaker 5: supporting ICE, This is what you're supporting, I have to
- 15:55Speaker 5: tell you. And there are a lot of moral issues
- 15:58Speaker 5: involved in this. They also killed two people up in Minnesota.
- 16:05Speaker 5: And the ICE people say, we have immunity. And the
- 16:09Speaker 5: Justice Department says the authorities cannot get any information regarding
- 16:14Speaker 5: the shootings. They don't want anyone to be prosecuted. Our
- 16:18Speaker 5: president has actually said these people have immunity. Complete immunity.
- 16:23Speaker 5: And you're fine with people working with ICE in this community.
- 16:26Speaker 5: Do you understand why the county board doesn't want to
- 16:28Speaker 5: do that?
- 16:30Speaker 2: Okay, Chuck, thank you for your comments.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Appreciate them. Obviously, you and I don't see eye to
- 16:35Speaker 1: eye on this. Number one, I'm not demonizing immigrants.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Period.
- 16:41Speaker 1: This is a country of immigrants, and I welcome immigrants legally.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I would not use the word demonize, but if you
- 16:50Speaker 1: want to use the word demonize, I would demonize anybody, black, white,
- 16:55Speaker 1: or brown, that drives a car and kills somebody on
- 16:59Speaker 1: a Sunday afternoon. And, I mean, and is here illegally.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I mean, I would like to ask Chuck, do you
- 17:07Speaker 1: think it is okay, Chuck, if you're still there, do
- 17:10Speaker 1: you think it is okay that illegal.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Immigrants, no matter where they're from, are coming into this
- 17:19Speaker 1: country by the millions. Are you okay with that is
- 17:23Speaker 1: what I want to ask you. Are you okay with
- 17:26Speaker 1: people doing things that are illegal? You brought up two instances.
- 17:31Speaker 1: One in West Omaha, you brought in front of the
- 17:34Speaker 1: children in the restaurant. You brought up another one. You
- 17:36Speaker 1: brought up Minnesota too. Okay, these are instances that I
- 17:41Speaker 1: will say, these are immigration officers behaving badly. We have
- 17:46Speaker 1: police officers that behave badly too.
- 17:48Speaker 2: At times, all over the country.
- 17:51Speaker 1: So does that mean that we should get rid of
- 17:53Speaker 1: all police officers? We have teachers that behave badly all
- 17:57Speaker 1: over the country, that have relations with kids they shouldn't have, etc.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Should we get rid of all teachers? Should we demonize them?
- 18:05Speaker 1: I'm saying that there are bad actors. There are bad
- 18:09Speaker 1: doctors and nurses out there, too. There are bad actors
- 18:13Speaker 1: in every profession today. But should we demonize ICE then?
- 18:18Speaker 1: I mean, I think we could turn it around. You
- 18:21Speaker 1: said I'm demonizing immigrants. You're demonizing ICE. Do you feel
- 18:25Speaker 1: the same way about police?
- 18:30Speaker 3: Chuck is not on the line.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Oh, he's not on the line anymore. He's probably mad
- 18:32Speaker 2: at what I'm saying.
- 18:33Speaker 1: But these are instances that he is bringing up that
- 18:39Speaker 1: people continue to bring up about ICE. But keep in mind,
- 18:44Speaker 1: ICE is Immigration Custom Enforcement. That's why they are there
- 18:48Speaker 1: for the federal government. If we have had some bad
- 18:51Speaker 1: actors and we have had some bad actors, I'm not
- 18:54Speaker 1: denying that. But what I am saying is then take
- 18:58Speaker 1: care of the bad actors. What can we do about
- 19:00Speaker 1: taking care of that? One thing I did with the
- 19:03Speaker 1: Omaha Police Department is to make sure that every officer
- 19:06Speaker 1: had a body camera on that instantly deployed when they
- 19:11Speaker 1: drew their weapons. We did that for every police officer.
- 19:14Speaker 1: That not only protected the citizen. but it protected the
- 19:18Speaker 1: police officers. That's what we should do with ICE, in
- 19:21Speaker 1: my opinion. They don't wear body cameras. They should be
- 19:24Speaker 1: wearing body cameras. There are things to do that we
- 19:27Speaker 1: can do, the federal government can do, and we could
- 19:29Speaker 1: do locally to protect these bad actors. But to say
- 19:34Speaker 1: that because I said that this illegal on Sunday afternoon
- 19:39Speaker 1: that blew through a red light and was down in
- 19:44Speaker 1: Douglas County Correction and was on a 48-hour ice hold.
- 19:47Speaker 1: He posted bond, and they had four hours. Douglas County
- 19:50Speaker 1: Sheriff's Department, to pick him up or he would be released.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I brought up the same thing about what happened in
- 19:56Speaker 1: 2016 with Sarah Root and Eswin Meja.
- 19:59Speaker 2: He left the country.
- 20:00Speaker 3: And just to clarify, I did get an email here,
- 20:03Speaker 3: comment at kfab.com from Brian. Where did it go here?
- 20:07Speaker 3: I'm sorry. This was from Doug, actually. How much was
- 20:10Speaker 3: the bond? I believe Aaron Sheriff Hansen said 750 bucks yesterday?
- 20:16Speaker 1: It seemed like it was... Yeah, I don't remember exactly.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I could ask Sheriff Hansen because I didn't make a
- 20:21Speaker 1: note on that. But I believed he posted it was
- 20:23Speaker 1: about $ 750. $ 750, yeah. Which surprises me that it was that...
- 20:30Speaker 1: I mean, it's called... Well, it can be called vehicular homicide.
- 20:34Speaker 1: It can be called manslaughter. I mean, it depends on
- 20:36Speaker 1: the aggravating circumstances of what happened. But at the same time,
- 20:42Speaker 1: this is.
- 20:42Speaker 3: I mean.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I guess I want to– if Chuck would want to
- 20:46Speaker 1: come back on, are you OK– it's not immigrants. It's
- 20:50Speaker 1: not legal immigrants. But are you OK with people illegally
- 20:54Speaker 1: entering our country? I'd like to know that, that you're
- 20:57Speaker 1: OK with that. I mean, goodness sakes, I can't go
- 21:01Speaker 1: into a foreign country without a passport and under scrutiny,
- 21:05Speaker 1: but you would be okay, I guess, with open borders
- 21:08Speaker 1: and to say anybody could come in that wants to
- 21:10Speaker 1: come in legal or not. And I'm not against immigrants,
- 21:14Speaker 1: but you know what? I have talked and met with
- 21:17Speaker 1: tons and tons of legal immigrants that have come into
- 21:20Speaker 1: this country, and it makes them angry because they went
- 21:24Speaker 1: through the legal process, and it takes a while. But
- 21:27Speaker 1: they took the time to go through the legal process
- 21:29Speaker 1: to make sure that they did what they needed to
- 21:32Speaker 1: do to be in this country legally. And it makes
- 21:35Speaker 1: them angry that other people just come in illegally and
- 21:40Speaker 1: nothing is done about.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Them unless they commit a crime.
- 21:43Speaker 1: But again, we do not– the city of Omaha– The
- 21:45Speaker 1: Omaha Police Department, they do not go around collecting or
- 21:49Speaker 1: checking legal statuses.
- 21:50Speaker 2: They don't go knocking on doors. They aren't ICE agents.
- 21:53Speaker 1: They are after those that break the law, whether you're black, white,
- 21:58Speaker 1: or brown.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Gene Stothern in the KFAB comment line here on NewsRadio
- 22:02Speaker 3: 1110 KFAB. The phone lines are chuck full. And that's
- 22:06Speaker 3: kind of a pun, but... No, they are full.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Thanks, Chuck.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Thanks, Chuck. You can send me an email, comment at kfab.com.
- 22:14Speaker 3: When we come back from break here after a Fox
- 22:16Speaker 3: News update, we're going to play rapid fire with these
- 22:18Speaker 3: phone calls and get your thoughts and your opinions, your comments, questions,
- 22:22Speaker 3: and concerns. Coming up next, Gene Stothert and the KFAB
- 22:25Speaker 3: comment line. News Radio 1110 KFAB, your host of the show.
- 22:30Speaker 3: My name is Peyton Highlock, and phone lines are hot today, 402-558-1110. Yes,
- 22:35Speaker 3: they are.
- 22:35Speaker 1: And please call because we're having a conversation about ICE.
- 22:40Speaker 1: It started with Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson being on
- 22:43Speaker 1: yesterday about this incident that happened at... 349 on Ida
- 22:48Speaker 1: Street and Irvington Road on Sunday afternoon of someone that
- 22:53Speaker 1: was illegal, Jose Ortega Romero, blasted through a red light,
- 22:58Speaker 1: ran into a car and killed a 70-year-old man. We
- 23:02Speaker 1: talked about the differences, too, between what a sanctuary city
- 23:06Speaker 1: is and with the position that the Douglas County Board
- 23:09Speaker 1: has taken, it does make sense. Douglas County, a sanctuary county,
- 23:14Speaker 1: saying that if they have taken this position, indeed, that
- 23:18Speaker 1: they will not work with ICE. I have said for
- 23:20Speaker 1: the 12 years I was mayor, the Omaha Police Department
- 23:22Speaker 1: that I worked with, not that way. I mean, the
- 23:25Speaker 1: Omaha Police Department, they would work in collaboration with ICE.
- 23:29Speaker 1: They were not ICE agents, and we made that clear.
- 23:32Speaker 1: I want to make it also clear that that the
- 23:34Speaker 1: term sanctuary city, there is no single federal law that
- 23:40Speaker 1: creates or defines sanctuary city. I want to make sure
- 23:44Speaker 1: people know that. The term is really what I would
- 23:48Speaker 1: call a political one and not a legal one. And
- 23:50Speaker 1: the entire legal battle about sanctuary cities hinges on what
- 23:55Speaker 1: the federal government cannot do legally.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Based largely on the U.S. Constitution. So, I mean, people
- 24:00Speaker 2: will question, what does that mean? What does that really mean?
- 24:03Speaker 1: Do you remember when last week, if you were listening,
- 24:07Speaker 1: when I had Dan Osborne, candidate for U.S. Senate, on
- 24:11Speaker 1: the show in the studio, I asked him, did he
- 24:13Speaker 1: support a sanctuary city? And he said he was not
- 24:16Speaker 1: aware of what that was. And so I think most
- 24:20Speaker 1: of us know what that term essentially means. And so
- 24:24Speaker 1: that's what we're talking about today. Do you mean this
- 24:28Speaker 1: right here, Gene? Do you believe in sanctuary cities?
- 24:31Speaker 2: Sanctuary cities. To be quite frank, I'm not sure what
- 24:35Speaker 2: that is. There we go.
- 24:37Speaker 1: You've heard it from Dan Osborne. That's where we're at.
- 24:40Speaker 1: And like I said, head down Osborne on because I
- 24:43Speaker 1: want you to hear. I want you to listen to
- 24:45Speaker 1: the questions. Same thing with Sheriff Aaron Hansen that was
- 24:48Speaker 1: on yesterday. Aaron Hansen and I wouldn't always agree. In fact,
- 24:52Speaker 1: we'd argue about things, but we still had the same goal,
- 24:56Speaker 1: and that was to keep our city and our county safe.
- 24:59Speaker 1: And I still like the guy. I mean, I support him.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I think he's doing a great job. I want to
- 25:04Speaker 1: get to some phone calls here. I had a question
- 25:06Speaker 1: from Amber that I hope, Jean, you might be able
- 25:08Speaker 1: to answer real quick.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Okay.
- 25:13Speaker 3: The bond for Jose Ortega Romero, who sets the bond
- 25:18Speaker 3: and why is it so low?
- 25:20Speaker 1: The judge sets the bond and I don't know why
- 25:23Speaker 1: it was so low. It was the bond was $ 7, 500.
- 25:25Speaker 1: And of course, all he had to post was 10%
- 25:29Speaker 1: of that, which is $ 750, which he did, which does
- 25:32Speaker 1: not seem like a lot that potentially he could be
- 25:34Speaker 1: charged with vehicular homicide.
- 25:36Speaker 3: And the last part of Amber's question goes on to say,
- 25:40Speaker 3: Are we able ever– wow, I butchered that. Are we
- 25:43Speaker 3: able to find out who the judge was?
- 25:45Speaker 2: Yes, we could. I don't know right now offhand who
- 25:49Speaker 2: the judge was.
- 25:49Speaker 3: But the answer is yes, you could find out who
- 25:50Speaker 3: it was.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 25:51Speaker 1: It's in public records. He went to court. I mean
- 25:55Speaker 1: he was– the judge said what the bond would be
- 25:58Speaker 1: and he posted the bond. And again, you only have
- 26:00Speaker 1: to post 10 percent of that bond. So that seems very,
- 26:04Speaker 1: very low to me and I would like to know
- 26:06Speaker 1: why– I would like to know why the judge made
- 26:08Speaker 1: that decision.
- 26:09Speaker 2: But I would listen to the judge.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Let's hit the phone lines here. Sam, thanks for holding
- 26:13Speaker 3: on for us. You're live with Gene Stothert on KFAB.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Good morning, Sam.
- 26:19Speaker 4: Morning, Gene.
- 26:20Speaker 6: You had some good follow-up questions for that moron that
- 26:23Speaker 6: called earlier.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Chuck?
- 26:28Speaker 6: But one thing you could say is just there's living
- 26:31Speaker 6: examples right now where these policies are just complete dumpster fires. L.A., Oakland,
- 26:38Speaker 6: San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, New York City, Philadelphia, you know.
- 26:46Speaker 6: And the other thing that is funny is the lefties
- 26:49Speaker 6: always preach, we need more affordable housing. Well, moving all
- 26:55Speaker 6: these illegals into these cities is the exact reason why
- 26:58Speaker 6: there isn't affordable housing. It wasn't affordable to begin with,
- 27:02Speaker 6: but this exasperated the whole thing. And there's plenty of examples.
- 27:08Speaker 6: You really don't even have to ask him, what do
- 27:11Speaker 6: you think? You think we shouldn't have any police? You
- 27:14Speaker 6: should just point to the statistics and the homeless and
- 27:18Speaker 6: drug use and everything in all these cities, sanctuary cities,
- 27:21Speaker 6: and the cost of living and the taxes. And that's
- 27:25Speaker 6: just proof right there. I don't get how we can,
- 27:28Speaker 6: like specifically New York, why do they keep... shooting themselves
- 27:33Speaker 6: in the foot in electing these bozos.
- 27:36Speaker 2: I have no clue.
- 27:37Speaker 6: Because there's more people with their... My dad always told me,
- 27:40Speaker 6: he said, when there becomes more people with their hand out,
- 27:44Speaker 6: we're doomed. Then there is not, we're doomed as a nation.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 27:48Speaker 1: And you know, when you talk about some of these
- 27:50Speaker 1: other cities that have taken this real liberal sanctuary city approach,
- 27:56Speaker 1: the crime has risen dramatically. We still in the city
- 28:01Speaker 1: of Omaha have a very, very low crime rate. And
- 28:04Speaker 1: that's because even though our officers are down about 100
- 28:08Speaker 1: of what they are budgeted for, they're still doing a
- 28:11Speaker 1: darn good job keeping our community safe. And that's what
- 28:15Speaker 1: law enforcement is there for. Again, you cannot have a
- 28:18Speaker 1: safe community without law enforcement. One of the things that
- 28:21Speaker 1: we did– Todd Schmatter and I did is we first
- 28:24Speaker 1: did a pilot, and we had a professional mental health
- 28:28Speaker 1: care professional that we did a pilot on on a
- 28:31Speaker 1: couple of our precincts that any call that came into 911,
- 28:35Speaker 1: for example, that had anything to do with DV, with
- 28:39Speaker 1: child abuse, with anything that could be a mental health call,
- 28:44Speaker 1: that mental health professional went with the police officer directly.
- 28:48Speaker 1: to that call. But let me tell you, so many
- 28:51Speaker 1: of those situations are very dangerous. And if I was
- 28:55Speaker 1: a mayor of the city, I would not want just
- 28:57Speaker 1: a mental health professional answering these 911 calls of domestic
- 29:01Speaker 1: assault with a gun or a weapon. I mean, can
- 29:04Speaker 1: you imagine, say, a social worker going in and trying
- 29:07Speaker 1: to deescalate with a 6'3, 280-pound man that has beaten
- 29:12Speaker 1: his wife. I mean, that can't be done. Sir, take
- 29:17Speaker 1: a deep breath. Take a deep breath.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Right, me too.
- 29:20Speaker 1: And to say, you know, affordable housing, I agree with
- 29:23Speaker 1: Sam here. Affordable housing is the answer to a few problems.
- 29:29Speaker 1: It is not the answer to every problem. For 12 years,
- 29:33Speaker 1: I know you hate me saying this when I was mayor,
- 29:35Speaker 1: but I'm going to say it. For 12 years, my
- 29:37Speaker 1: number one priority was public safety. Always was, has to be,
- 29:42Speaker 1: should be every government entity's number one priority, keeping the
- 29:45Speaker 1: citizens safe. Mayor Ewing's number one priority is affordable housing.
- 29:50Speaker 2: And so you see the difference.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Now, I think the taxpayers should be asking Mayor Ewing now,
- 29:57Speaker 1: is does he want Omaha to be a sanctuary city?
- 30:00Speaker 2: I think that is a question.
- 30:01Speaker 1: You need to hold your mayor accountable like you held
- 30:04Speaker 1: me accountable, like you held Mayor Suttle and Mayor Dobb accountable.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Find out from Mayor Ewing, does he now want the
- 30:12Speaker 1: city of Omaha to be a sanctuary city? That question
- 30:15Speaker 1: should be asked and it should be answered. Going back
- 30:19Speaker 1: to the phone lines, we have Rick. Rick, thanks for
- 30:21Speaker 1: holding on for us. You are live with Gene Stothert
- 30:24Speaker 1: on the KFAB comment line.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 30:28Speaker 4: Good morning, Mayor Stauffer. Hey, I believe you're missing the
- 30:31Speaker 4: forest for the trees. And let me say just real quick,
- 30:35Speaker 4: if everybody remembers during the Biden administration, there was an
- 30:39Speaker 4: Oklahoma Republican senator that came up with a very, very
- 30:46Speaker 4: strict policy that would change everything to do with immigration.
- 30:52Speaker 4: And it was going to pass when Trump stepped in
- 30:55Speaker 4: and said he wanted them to vote against it because
- 30:59Speaker 4: it would be a wedge issue for the election, which
- 31:03Speaker 4: it was. But there's some place like this man they
- 31:06Speaker 4: just called Chuck and Amora. That's uncalled for because he
- 31:10Speaker 4: has a point. There's plenty, plenty of middle ground we
- 31:15Speaker 4: can come to. We don't need ice running around with
- 31:18Speaker 4: masks and not using warrants to go into housing, that
- 31:22Speaker 4: kind of thing. There's some common sense stuff. Instead, we
- 31:25Speaker 4: look like, I think the point from the administration is
- 31:30Speaker 4: they want to be cruel. That's why they have, doing
- 31:34Speaker 4: the things that they're doing. And there's so much, nobody
- 31:38Speaker 4: wants illegal immigrants in the country, but what we do
- 31:42Speaker 4: want is some common sense rules that could have been
- 31:46Speaker 4: passed by Congress, except for Trump playing games. So I
- 31:51Speaker 4: find it hard when I hear people pushing back so
- 31:54Speaker 4: bad against people being upset with ICE because there's so much.
- 32:01Speaker 4: We just want them to be under the normal rule
- 32:04Speaker 4: of law. Take your mask off, use warrants, and I
- 32:07Speaker 4: don't think that's asking too much.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Rick, I appreciate your comments. Let me ask you this, Rick.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Do you think that the Democrats have done a better
- 32:18Speaker 1: job with immigration then than the Republicans? Because frankly, I
- 32:22Speaker 1: think neither party has done a very good job of
- 32:26Speaker 1: what is happening with immigration. When you said the Oklahoma
- 32:31Speaker 1: senator had a plan under Biden, but Trump didn't want it,
- 32:36Speaker 1: do you think that there would have been something very
- 32:39Speaker 1: positive that would have happened in this country about immigration
- 32:42Speaker 1: if the Democrats were in control of it?
- 32:44Speaker 4: Yes. The conservative senator out of Oklahoma said it himself,
- 32:50Speaker 4: that it was by far the strictest we'd ever been
- 32:54Speaker 4: on immigration, except it would be uniform in a way that...
- 32:59Speaker 4: That's what I'm looking for, some common sense. Instead, we're
- 33:03Speaker 4: clear at the extreme where we have young men running
- 33:07Speaker 4: around with... unidentified uniforms doing crazy things. And I think
- 33:12Speaker 4: that is by intent. And I think what we need
- 33:16Speaker 4: to do is go back to the drawing board because
- 33:19Speaker 4: it's through Congress. But I promise you that the Trump
- 33:22Speaker 4: administration loves this just as a wedge issue. Just like
- 33:26Speaker 4: I hear everybody when we see some terrible, terrible, unfortunate
- 33:32Speaker 4: thing like that we're talking about with the 70-year-old that
- 33:36Speaker 4: got killed. Then they jump all over that, using it
- 33:40Speaker 4: as a political thing. And I just, I find it
- 33:43Speaker 4: irritating on both sides. So I'd like to hear what, yeah.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Rick, I want to ask you this. Do you believe
- 33:49Speaker 1: in border control? Do you believe that our borders should
- 33:52Speaker 1: be open and let anybody in that wants to come in?
- 33:54Speaker 2: Or do you believe they should be closed like they
- 33:56Speaker 2: are now?
- 33:58Speaker 4: I believe they, they, we need, Common sense border issues.
- 34:02Speaker 4: We need immigration in the sense of where we need
- 34:05Speaker 4: workers that works to the benefit of our citizens in
- 34:08Speaker 4: our country. And that's what the senator of Oklahoma was
- 34:11Speaker 4: pushing for. But Trump would rather see it as a
- 34:14Speaker 4: wedge issue and did not want the most strict policies ever.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Like he's going in right now that I never hear
- 34:21Speaker 4: you talk about. They go to people that are legally gay.
- 34:25Speaker 4: doing what they're supposed to, going to their hearings, and
- 34:28Speaker 4: ISIS snatching them right from their hearings. And they're going
- 34:32Speaker 4: into houses without legal warrants, and they do not care
- 34:37Speaker 4: about the legality. They just want to put up this
- 34:43Speaker 4: image of we're hard on crime, hard on the border.
- 34:47Speaker 4: But the truth is you can do it so much
- 34:50Speaker 4: better with everybody behind it. Well, at least a lot
- 34:54Speaker 4: of people behind it.
- 34:57Speaker 2: I appreciate your call. Yeah, no, I appreciate your call.
- 35:00Speaker 2: I really do.
- 35:01Speaker 1: You know, I would say that not all ICE agents
- 35:05Speaker 1: are going into houses illegally. These things are, I think,
- 35:09Speaker 1: are rare. And that, like I said, there are some
- 35:15Speaker 1: bad actors out there. But you brought up the facts,
- 35:17Speaker 1: for instance, that they said they're going around wearing masks.
- 35:21Speaker 1: And you said that several times. But do you know
- 35:23Speaker 1: that the FBI does that, too? I mean, when the FBI,
- 35:27Speaker 1: a lot of times when they're in a fugitive warrant
- 35:29Speaker 1: arrest situation. They're doing some of their activities out there
- 35:32Speaker 1: and trying to find out bad actors are doing, you know, investigations.
- 35:39Speaker 1: They wear masks, too. And I wouldn't think you would say, well,
- 35:41Speaker 1: let's get rid of the FBI, too. And so, you know,
- 35:45Speaker 1: I think you are right. I think that there has
- 35:47Speaker 1: got to be some solutions that the federal– immigration is
- 35:52Speaker 1: a federal issue.
- 35:53Speaker 2: It's not a local issue.
- 35:54Speaker 1: And I will say I think both sides, Democrats and
- 35:57Speaker 1: Republicans– have not done a very good job on immigration,
- 36:01Speaker 1: and I think that there needs to be some reform. But,
- 36:05Speaker 1: I mean, it does raise a red flag when you
- 36:07Speaker 1: do have something that happened like happened Sunday afternoon and
- 36:10Speaker 1: find out that that person indeed was illegal. And it
- 36:14Speaker 1: doesn't make– I'm just not talking about our southern border.
- 36:16Speaker 1: I'm talking about all of our borders. We're getting terrorists here.
- 36:20Speaker 1: that are coming into this country that hate the United States.
- 36:24Speaker 1: I mean, doesn't that scare the pants off you? Because
- 36:26Speaker 1: it does me. And so, you know, I think that
- 36:29Speaker 1: we've really got to look at all of our borders,
- 36:32Speaker 1: and we've got to make sure that we make this
- 36:35Speaker 1: a priority issue. But I don't think the solution is
- 36:39Speaker 1: to say, let's get rid of police, let's get rid
- 36:42Speaker 1: of ICE, let's get rid of all our prisons.
- 36:44Speaker 2: To me, that would end up in anarchy.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Gene Stothert and the KFAB comment line returning next. I
- 36:51Speaker 3: do have some emails here, and then I want to
- 36:52Speaker 3: get to some phone calls. Gene, a lot. It's been
- 36:54Speaker 3: hot today. So if you want to go back, you
- 36:55Speaker 3: missed any of the show today, you can find it
- 36:57Speaker 3: on the podcast page at KFAB.com. I got an email
- 37:01Speaker 3: from Brian. Where in Nebraska state statues is, quote, sanctuary
- 37:09Speaker 3: city or other jurisdiction codified? To my knowledge, it doesn't exist.
- 37:14Speaker 3: If it's not codified, then it's a made-up concept.
- 37:17Speaker 2: No, you're right.
- 37:18Speaker 1: No, Brian, you are absolutely right. It's not in state statute.
- 37:22Speaker 1: It's not a state law. But as I said earlier,
- 37:24Speaker 1: there's no single federal law that creates or defines a
- 37:28Speaker 1: sanctuary city either. And remember, immigration is a federal issue.
- 37:33Speaker 1: It is not a local or a state issue. And
- 37:37Speaker 1: so you are correct. There is nothing in Nebraska law. Now,
- 37:41Speaker 1: as I said before, it is not that term is
- 37:43Speaker 1: not a legal term.
- 37:45Speaker 2: It's it. I called it a political one.
- 37:47Speaker 1: To say it's more of a descriptive term, I.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Can see that. I mean I would call it descriptive too.
- 37:53Speaker 3: And that follows up an email from Scooter in regards
- 37:56Speaker 3: to sanctuary cities. I would say from Scooter, I would
- 37:59Speaker 3: say it's more of a descriptive term than a political term.
- 38:02Speaker 3: The phrase is used broadly in public discourse, media, and
- 38:06Speaker 3: government memorandums to describe local or state jurisdictions that limit
- 38:10Speaker 3: their cooperation with federal immigration and enforcement authorities.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Right.
- 38:16Speaker 1: And basically, once again, what they are saying is that
- 38:21Speaker 1: these cities or these counties will basically oppose any federal
- 38:27Speaker 1: sanctuary type policies. And a lot of times what the
- 38:31Speaker 1: federal stance will be then is they will use funding
- 38:34Speaker 1: threats and political pressure to to encourage cooperation for cities.
- 38:39Speaker 2: And so it's a huge issue.
- 38:44Speaker 1: A lot of people will say it reduces trust with
- 38:48Speaker 1: law enforcement, but at the same time, you got to
- 38:53Speaker 1: understand what the laws are that.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Govern ICE.
- 39:00Speaker 1: I mean, that makes a difference too, because you got
- 39:02Speaker 1: to keep in mind, ICE officials, they can't detain anyone
- 39:07Speaker 1: solely based on an immigration detainer without a warrant. And
- 39:14Speaker 1: they're not going to get a warrant without a judge,
- 39:16Speaker 1: and they're not going to get a warrant from a
- 39:18Speaker 1: judge unless a crime has been committed. So the way
- 39:21Speaker 1: a lot of people talk is ICE is just out
- 39:23Speaker 1: there willy-nilly breaking into houses, arresting people, and that's not
- 39:28Speaker 1: what they have the authority.
- 39:30Speaker 4: To do.
- 39:30Speaker 3: I got an email from Charles that says, who is
- 39:33Speaker 3: Tom Homan? The same guy under Obama that is doing
- 39:36Speaker 3: the job under Trump. Not going to be in favor
- 39:39Speaker 3: of removing masks for ICE agents based on how the
- 39:43Speaker 3: violent leftists respond. And then Michael says, Just to footnote
- 39:47Speaker 3: that email, this one comes from Michael. Tell your leftists
- 39:50Speaker 3: the ICE agents will go maskless as soon as there's
- 39:53Speaker 3: no fear of being doxxed and their families put in
- 39:56Speaker 3: danger by radical activists.
- 39:58Speaker 4: Okay.
- 39:58Speaker 1: And keep in mind, too, when I was talking about
- 40:00Speaker 1: Douglas County Correction, that is our jail for the county.
- 40:02Speaker 2: It's our jail for the city.
- 40:04Speaker 1: But local jails cannot hold individuals on an ICE detainer
- 40:11Speaker 1: unless a federal judge has issued a warrant, a federal judge.
- 40:16Speaker 1: And so that sometimes takes time too. So they have–
- 40:21Speaker 1: ICE is under certain federal laws and their authority comes
- 40:25Speaker 1: from the federal government. So, I mean, you hear of
- 40:28Speaker 1: some incidences where ICE was behaving badly. And like I said,
- 40:33Speaker 1: I can name a lot of instances where police were
- 40:36Speaker 1: behaving badly or teachers were behaving badly or doctors were
- 40:41Speaker 1: behaving badly. And so you can't say that– My mom
- 40:46Speaker 1: used to say one apple will destroy the whole bushel. Well,
- 40:48Speaker 1: that's an old saying. But still, you got to address
- 40:51Speaker 1: the problem where the problem is. Last comment here from
- 40:54Speaker 1: Matt wrapping up this conversation. I think the funny thing
- 40:58Speaker 1: is people don't realize there have been ICE flights in
- 41:01Speaker 1: and out of Omaha weekly that have been going on
- 41:04Speaker 1: for well over 20 plus years. And there are ICE
- 41:06Speaker 1: agents in the city of Omaha now. They're in the
- 41:09Speaker 1: FBI building. I'm telling you, they're here now and they
- 41:12Speaker 1: have been for a long, long time. So that is
- 41:17Speaker 1: it for us today. We didn't get to all of
- 41:19Speaker 1: the calls today. We'll get to them tomorrow, Peyton. We
- 41:22Speaker 1: want to keep this conversation going. We're very happy that
- 41:24Speaker 1: you joined us today. Thanks for spending this hour with us.
- 41:27Speaker 1: We'd love for you to join us again tomorrow. We'll
- 41:30Speaker 1: continue with this conversation. We have a lot to talk about, too,
- 41:34Speaker 1: with the elections coming up. So we'd love for you
- 41:37Speaker 1: to join us tomorrow. I'm Jean Stothert, and this is
- 41:39Speaker 1: 1110 KFAB.
