Latest / College Football Addiction: A Show About All Things College Football / Texas SURVIVES Ole Miss & It CHANGES EVERYTHING for Longhorns & Steve Sarkisian

- 0:00Speaker 1: Ole Miss had the football, 80 seconds left, down seven
- 0:04Speaker 1: in Austin with the best quarterback in the country under center.
- 0:08Speaker 1: And Texas had a fan base that had already watched
- 0:12Speaker 1: this exact movie twice in the last 14 days. You
- 0:15Speaker 1: know the movie. Texas builds a lead, they let the
- 0:19Speaker 1: lead breathe, and then they let the lead die. Oklahoma
- 0:23Speaker 1: up double digits at the half, gone. Florida up 17-3.
- 0:26Speaker 1: You had the ball, gone. And now for the third
- 0:29Speaker 1: straight Saturday, a double-digit Texas lead had evaporated in front
- 0:33Speaker 1: of everybody, this time at home once again. 21 points
- 0:38Speaker 1: was the lead this time. So when Trinidad dropped back
- 0:42Speaker 1: one last time and let it fly to the end zone,
- 0:44Speaker 1: there wasn't a single person inside a DKR that knew
- 0:49Speaker 1: how this was going to end. Not the players, not
- 0:52Speaker 1: the fans, and honestly, probably not Sark either. I want
- 0:57Speaker 1: to set the table here on college football addiction where
- 1:01Speaker 1: we are presented by prize picks because you can't understand
- 1:04Speaker 1: what happened Saturday night without understanding what came before it.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Texas started this season 4-0. They beat Ohio State in
- 1:12Speaker 1: that comeback that we all lost our minds over. They
- 1:16Speaker 1: were sitting at number one in the country. The preseason
- 1:18Speaker 1: Heisman favorite was taking snaps. The most expensive roster in
- 1:22Speaker 1: the sport, according to some, was doing exactly what it
- 1:26Speaker 1: was built to do. But then October happened. Two losses.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Same score both times, 27-24 to Oklahoma in Dallas, where
- 1:34Speaker 1: the Sooners scored 17 in the fourth quarter, and then
- 1:37Speaker 1: 27-24 at home to a Florida team that had given
- 1:40Speaker 1: up 83 points in its previous two games. And that
- 1:44Speaker 1: Florida game ended with Arch Manning getting strip sacked late,
- 1:47Speaker 1: the ball on the turf, and then the Gators on
- 1:50Speaker 1: top of it. The season sitting right there with it.
- 1:54Speaker 1: First two-game losing streak for Texas since 2021, from No.
- 1:58Speaker 1: 1 to No. 19 in the blink of an eye.
- 2:01Speaker 1: And then Monday hit. ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that redshirt
- 2:05Speaker 1: freshman K.J. Lisi was getting more first-team reps in practice.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Sark pushed back on parts of that, but he also
- 2:12Speaker 1: said this, And I do want you to hear it.
- 2:14Speaker 1: He said, he's our starter, but I need to see
- 2:16Speaker 1: a better version of Arch Manning. That's not necessarily a
- 2:21Speaker 1: coach defending his guy. That's a coach putting his guy
- 2:24Speaker 1: on notice publicly. Meanwhile, the national noise turned on Sark himself.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Hot seat talk, buyout talk, a roughly $ 50 million buyout
- 2:34Speaker 1: that people were actually discussing out loud at Texas in October.
- 2:39Speaker 1: about a coach who had his program in back-to-back playoff
- 2:42Speaker 1: semifinals not that long ago. So this wasn't just a
- 2:46Speaker 1: big game. This was the game. Lose to No. 7
- 2:49Speaker 1: Ole Miss, and you're 4-3, 1-3 in the SEC, with
- 2:53Speaker 1: your playoff hopes likely in the dumpster, your quarterback controversy
- 2:57Speaker 1: fully alive, and your head coach answering questions about his
- 3:00Speaker 1: future every day until December. Win, and you buy yourself
- 3:05Speaker 1: a pulse. Now here's what makes the first half so interesting.
- 3:09Speaker 1: It didn't necessarily start clean, boys. Texas moved the ball
- 3:12Speaker 1: on the opening drive. Manning was sharp early, but they
- 3:15Speaker 1: stalled out in the red zone and they had to
- 3:17Speaker 1: kick a field goal. Ole Miss answered with a field
- 3:19Speaker 1: goal of its own, and you kind of thought this
- 3:21Speaker 1: might be a back-and-forth contest, didn't you? The score is
- 3:24Speaker 1: 3-3 early in it. Then Manning throws a pick right
- 3:29Speaker 1: there in the first quarter, and if you're a Texas fan,
- 3:32Speaker 1: you felt it in your chest. Here we go again.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Except the next play, Juice Cryer picks off Chambliss and
- 3:39Speaker 1: hands it right back to Texas. To me, that's when
- 3:43Speaker 1: the night turned. Manning hit Wingo for a big chunk play.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Brown ripped off a long run, cut back, ran through
- 3:49Speaker 1: a defender, got inside the five. Arch keeps it on
- 3:52Speaker 1: a zone read, walks in 10-3. The next drive, Texas
- 3:57Speaker 1: is behind the sticks, third and long. Manning tucks it,
- 4:00Speaker 1: runs right up the middle of the Ole Miss defense line.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Takes a shot, pops up, signals first down like he
- 4:05Speaker 1: was trying to point straight into the press box. Then
- 4:09Speaker 1: he drops back, throws it 50 yards in the air
- 4:12Speaker 1: to Wingo on the money, touchdown at 17-3. That's the
- 4:16Speaker 1: throw that's going to be in every highlight package, and
- 4:19Speaker 1: it should be. But the run before it was the
- 4:22Speaker 1: one that told me something was different. Texas tacked on
- 4:25Speaker 1: another touchdown later in the quarter, 24-3. And the Ole
- 4:29Speaker 1: Miss Rebels, who came in averaging over 37 points a game,
- 4:33Speaker 1: drove all the way down to the Texas goal line
- 4:35Speaker 1: before half. They got inside the five, and they couldn't score.
- 4:41Speaker 1: They throw a pick. No points. Halftime's there. Three-touchdown lead.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Manning at the break, I believe 12 of 18, 164 yards.
- 4:51Speaker 1: A touchdown through the air, a touchdown on the ground.
- 4:54Speaker 1: The guy who was about to lose his job, supposedly,
- 4:58Speaker 1: was playing one of the best halves of football that
- 5:00Speaker 1: anybody had seen from him all year. So naturally, you'd
- 5:03Speaker 1: think this one was over, right? You'd think, man, Texas
- 5:08Speaker 1: got this easy. They responded. Not so fast. Before we
- 5:12Speaker 1: go on, I will tell you quickly, this video is
- 5:14Speaker 1: brought to you by PrizePix, who just launched PrizePix Packs,

- 5:46Speaker 1: friends over at PrizePix for their support. The link is
- 5:49Speaker 1: in the description. The second half opened up about as
- 5:52Speaker 1: badly as you could imagine. Texas gets the ball. There's
- 5:56Speaker 1: an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty right away. There's a deep shot
- 5:59Speaker 1: to Coleman that's dropped. Coleman leaves the field banged up.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Manning fumbles. The ball squirts into the end zone. Ole
- 6:05Speaker 1: Miss falls on it. Defensive touchdown. It's 24-10. And you
- 6:08Speaker 1: could feel it. You could feel the building change. Chambliss
- 6:14Speaker 1: threw a six-yard touchdown to Fields to make it 24-17.
- 6:17Speaker 1: That drive got help from Texas penalties along the way
- 6:21Speaker 1: to make it worse. Manning took a sack, got hit hard,
- 6:25Speaker 1: had to come off the field. So Lacy, the guy
- 6:27Speaker 1: that everybody spent all week talking about, actually trotted out there.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Think about it for a moment. The storyline of the week,
- 6:34Speaker 1: walking onto the field with the lead slipping away. Manning
- 6:37Speaker 1: did come back, of course, but by the early fourth quarter,
- 6:40Speaker 1: Ole Miss had finished the job. 21 straight points to
- 6:43Speaker 1: make it 24-24. Lead completely evaporated. Three straight weeks, three
- 6:51Speaker 1: straight double-digit leads, three straight collapses in progress. So what
- 6:56Speaker 1: does Texas do? Well, that's the whole game right there.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Everything before that moment was a setup. Everything after it
- 7:06Speaker 1: was our answer. Second down on one of the final
- 7:11Speaker 1: drives and Relique Brown goes 47 yards. Michael Terry III
- 7:16Speaker 1: picks up a first down. Another big run gets it
- 7:19Speaker 1: to the one and Arch keeps it himself and pushes
- 7:22Speaker 1: it in. 31-24, eight minutes left. Then, because this is
- 7:27Speaker 1: Texas football in 2026 and nothing is allowed to be simple,
- 7:31Speaker 1: Manning throws into triple coverage, gets picked off. It's his
- 7:34Speaker 1: third turnover of the night, but the defense held. Texas
- 7:38Speaker 1: gets the ball back. You hit a field goal with
- 7:41Speaker 1: just under two and a half to go. It's 34
- 7:43Speaker 1: to 24. Ole Miss is out of timeouts. And you think, okay,
- 7:46Speaker 1: there's the ball game. I flipped over to the World
- 7:49Speaker 1: Series to see what my Rays were doing. Unfortunately, we
- 7:51Speaker 1: lost tonight, 0-2 in that series. But no, that's not
- 7:55Speaker 1: the ballgame. Of course not. Chambliss starts dinking and dunking.
- 7:58Speaker 1: You hit Odom over the middle. You get inside the
- 8:00Speaker 1: Texas 25. Ole Miss kicks a field goal with 82
- 8:04Speaker 1: seconds left on the clock to save some clock. And
- 8:06Speaker 1: the Rebels, somehow, for the second time this year, Texas
- 8:10Speaker 1: gives up an onside kick. Chambliss works it to just
- 8:13Speaker 1: across midfield. They've got a fourth and eight. The season's
- 8:16Speaker 1: on the line for both teams. He finds Deuce Alexander
- 8:18Speaker 1: for nine yards, gets out of bounds at the Texas 39.
- 8:21Speaker 1: They're still alive. They actually moved it all the way
- 8:23Speaker 1: down to what, the Texas 24, before a penalty backed
- 8:27Speaker 1: them up just a bit. Got one more chance at
- 8:29Speaker 1: the end zone. Jelani McDonald comes down with it. And now,
- 8:33Speaker 1: though you thought it was a couple of times, the
- 8:36Speaker 1: game is officially over. Three quick thoughts and we'll get
- 8:39Speaker 1: out of here. Takeaway number one, Arch answered, but he's
- 8:43Speaker 1: not completely fixed yet. I want to be really fair
- 8:46Speaker 1: here because I think the praise and the criticism for
- 8:49Speaker 1: Arch are too loud at times. Both of these things
- 8:53Speaker 1: that I want to say are true, I think, at
- 8:55Speaker 1: the same time. Life is very rarely black and white.
- 8:58Speaker 1: There's a lot of gray in the middle. Arch Manning
- 9:01Speaker 1: responded this week exactly the way you want your quarterback
- 9:04Speaker 1: to respond when his coach calls him out in public.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Sark said he was edgy in practice. Manning said he
- 9:09Speaker 1: plays his best football with his back up against the wall.
- 9:12Speaker 1: And then he went out and backed it up. He
- 9:14Speaker 1: had two rushing touchdowns, including the go-ahead score in the
- 9:17Speaker 1: fourth quarter. He had a 50-yard dime to Wingo. He
- 9:19Speaker 1: had a third and long scramble that set the tone
- 9:21Speaker 1: for the first half. He's a leader, man. That's the
- 9:25Speaker 1: guy Texas thought it was getting. But three turnovers, an
- 9:30Speaker 1: interception in the first quarter, a fumble that turned into
- 9:33Speaker 1: an Ole Miss touchdown to open the second half. another
- 9:36Speaker 1: interception into triple coverage with the game on the line.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Those are the same issues, the ones that cost you
- 9:42Speaker 1: against Florida, the ball security, the forcing it, the one
- 9:45Speaker 1: bad decision that flips a game late, same mistakes that
- 9:48Speaker 1: happen against Oklahoma. So I don't think the quarterback controversy
- 9:53Speaker 1: is completely dead. I think it's quieted because you beat
- 9:56Speaker 1: a top 10 team tonight at home, but there is
- 9:59Speaker 1: a difference there. The KJ Lacey conversation is not going
- 10:03Speaker 1: to happen this week. Texas won. But it should be
- 10:06Speaker 1: honestly done for a while. You're not going to bench
- 10:09Speaker 1: a guy like Arch Manning. I think a lot of
- 10:11Speaker 1: that was contrived. But Arch did survive Saturday. I don't
- 10:16Speaker 1: know that he solved it completely. Takeaway number two, the
- 10:20Speaker 1: defense won this game without its best pass rusher. People
- 10:24Speaker 1: are not talking about this enough, but Colin Simmons, massive
- 10:28Speaker 1: loss going against a quarterback like Chambliss who wrecks you
- 10:31Speaker 1: with his legs and his arm. And what did Texas'
- 10:34Speaker 1: defense do? Three interceptions of the best quarterback in the country.
- 10:41Speaker 1: The one by Cryer right after Manning's first pick, which
- 10:46Speaker 1: stopped the bleeding before it started. The one by Biles
- 10:50Speaker 1: at the goal line before the half, which was easily
- 10:53Speaker 1: a seven-point swing in a game that was decided by
- 10:56Speaker 1: exactly that seven, and then the one by McDonald to
- 10:59Speaker 1: end it. That's the story. The offense put the defense
- 11:02Speaker 1: in bad spots all night. Short fields, a defensive touchdown,
- 11:07Speaker 1: a fourth-quarter interception, and every single time the game was
- 11:10Speaker 1: hanging by a thread, the defense was the one holding it.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Did they bend in the second half? Yes, big time. Penalties,
- 11:17Speaker 1: extended drives. Ole Miss ripped off 21 straight points, 14
- 11:21Speaker 1: of those on the defense, seven not. And they turned
- 11:24Speaker 1: a blowout into a coin flip. You can't ignore that.
- 11:28Speaker 1: But when the season was literally in the air on
- 11:30Speaker 1: the final snap, it was the defense that went out
- 11:32Speaker 1: and got it. Takeaway number three, Texas finally answered the punch.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And that saves Sark for now. This is the big one.
- 11:41Speaker 1: The difference between Saturday night and the last two weeks
- 11:43Speaker 1: wasn't the lead. Texas had leads against Oklahoma. They had
- 11:47Speaker 1: a lead against Florida. The difference was what happened after
- 11:50Speaker 1: the lead was gone. Against Oklahoma, the comeback happened and
- 11:54Speaker 1: Texas never answered. Against Florida, the comeback happened and Texas
- 11:57Speaker 1: couldn't answer. Against Ole Miss, it was 24-24 in the
- 12:01Speaker 1: fourth quarter. The crowd was nervous, the momentum was completely gone,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and Texas went right down the field and scored. That
- 12:08Speaker 1: is the drive that saved this season. That's the drive that,
- 12:11Speaker 1: at least for now, is saving Steve Sarkeesian. And look
- 12:15Speaker 1: at how they did it. Not with a trick play,
- 12:17Speaker 1: not with some heave down the sideline. They ran the football.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Go back to that Florida game for a second. Texas
- 12:23Speaker 1: finished that one with 272 total yards. They were 2
- 12:26Speaker 1: of 10 on third down. They were stuffed in short yardage.
- 12:29Speaker 1: They were stopped on fourth downs. The knock all week
- 12:32Speaker 1: was that this offense had no identity when it mattered,
- 12:34Speaker 1: that Sark kept getting cute, and that Texas, when they
- 12:37Speaker 1: needed one yard, couldn't find it. Sark even said after
- 12:40Speaker 1: the Florida game that he had to stay creative without
- 12:43Speaker 1: losing sight of who they are. Well, Saturday, with the
- 12:46Speaker 1: game tied in the fourth quarter, Texas decided who it is.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Relique Brown for 47, Michael Terry for another first down,
- 12:53Speaker 1: another carry down to the one, quarterback keeper touchdown, a
- 12:56Speaker 1: handful of plays, ground and pound, lean on people. That's
- 13:01Speaker 1: the version of this offense that Texas fans have been
- 13:03Speaker 1: begging for. It's not complicated. It's not always pretty. It's
- 13:06Speaker 1: just physical football when the building is nervous and everyone
- 13:10Speaker 1: knows what's coming. If that drive becomes the blueprint and
- 13:13Speaker 1: not the exception, this team will be dangerous again. Because
- 13:17Speaker 1: if Texas loses that game after blowing a 21-point lead
- 13:20Speaker 1: for the third week straight at home, I don't care
- 13:23Speaker 1: what the buyout number is, the conversation in Austin becomes
- 13:26Speaker 1: impossible to stop this week. But that didn't happen. Instead,
- 13:31Speaker 1: Texas is 5-2. They're back to 2-2 in the ACC.
- 13:34Speaker 1: They're still breathing. And there's a playoff path, but there's
- 13:38Speaker 1: not a lot of margin. Every Saturday from here on
- 13:42Speaker 1: out is this Saturday. And here's the thing about the
- 13:46Speaker 1: SEC right now. It is chaos. Ole Miss came in
- 13:49Speaker 1: at 5-1 and 3-1 in league play and now has
- 13:52Speaker 1: two losses. The middle of this conference is a traffic
- 13:54Speaker 1: jam of teams with two losses all looking at each other.
- 13:58Speaker 1: A team that wins out from here, even with two losses,
- 14:01Speaker 1: is going to have the best argument. Can this Texas
- 14:04Speaker 1: team win out? I have no idea. Saturday night, I
- 14:08Speaker 1: watched them look like one of the best teams in
- 14:09Speaker 1: the country for 30 minutes and then the most fragile
- 14:12Speaker 1: team in the country for the next 25. But here's
- 14:15Speaker 1: the first time in three weeks they got to the
- 14:18Speaker 1: end of the game, and the answer was yes. Sark survives,
- 14:21Speaker 1: Arch survives, and most importantly, the season survives. But surviving
- 14:26Speaker 1: is not the same thing as being fixed. And everybody
- 14:28Speaker 1: in Austin knows that. Because for three straight weeks, this
- 14:32Speaker 1: team has proven it can build a lead on anybody.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Saturday night, it was the first time that it proved
- 14:38Speaker 1: it could keep on. Barely. Let me know your thoughts
- 14:42Speaker 1: down in the comments. Texas gets a huge win, a
- 14:45Speaker 1: season-saving win. You'd have been unranked, I think, if you
- 14:48Speaker 1: lose this one. Huge win for Texas and Arch Manning
- 14:51Speaker 1: and Steve Sarkeesian. Love to hear what your thoughts are
- 14:53Speaker 1: down in the comments. We'll see you next time on
- 14:55Speaker 1: College Football Addiction.
