- 1:43Speaker 3: Virginia Street in Charleston. Lot's to get to this morning.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Welcome to the show. The day after the inauguration of
- 1:48Speaker 3: new Governor Patrick Morrissey and now the other members of
- 1:51Speaker 3: the Board of Public Works as well, we get a
- 1:53Speaker 3: new state Auditor, we get a new Attorney General, new

- 1:57Speaker 3: into all that a little bit later on. Plus the
- 1:59Speaker 3: city Charleston now has a new city councilman in the
- 2:03Speaker 3: form of a gentleman by the name of Harper Gardner.
- 2:05Speaker 3: He represents Ward fifteen. He was appointed following the resignation
- 2:09Speaker 3: of Sam MINORDI we're gonna get to know Counselman Gardner
- 2:11Speaker 3: a little bit later on, plus several other things in
- 2:14Speaker 3: the news. I want to get to as well, but
- 2:16Speaker 3: it's always your phone calls and tex Star Welcome big
- 2:18Speaker 3: Ley Piggley Wiggily hotline three zero four three four five
- 2:21Speaker 3: fifty eight fifty eight, Tony the Taylor text three zero
- 2:23Speaker 3: four nine three five five zero zero eight. Before we
- 2:26Speaker 3: get to anything else, though, I do want to throw
- 2:28Speaker 3: this out. You heard Jeff Jenkins talking about it on
- 2:30Speaker 3: the news. Man. I tell you I pull into Charleston,
- 2:32Speaker 3: you know, normally about say seven thirty ish in the morning,
- 2:36Speaker 3: coming across the Fort Hill Bridge, there are potholes that
- 2:42Speaker 3: you could probably put a small piece of farm equipment.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I mean, it's bad. So what they are going to
- 2:50Speaker 3: do and Jeff talked about this on the news starting
- 2:53Speaker 3: I think immediately and if you're in it, you can
- 2:55Speaker 3: you can let me know about it. They're planning rolling
- 2:59Speaker 3: roadblock near the oak Wood Road exit, both east and westbound,
- 3:03Speaker 3: because I mean, I just luckily, you know, at that
- 3:06Speaker 3: time of morning when I'm coming to Charleston, traffics basically
- 3:09Speaker 3: at a standstill between people coming off oak Wood trying
- 3:12Speaker 3: to get in the lane to pass Virginia Street and
- 3:14Speaker 3: then people like me that are trying to make the
- 3:17Speaker 3: right to get onto Virginia Street off the exit there.
- 3:20Speaker 3: And I mean, they are some pretty pretty big pot
- 3:23Speaker 3: These aren't potholes. I mean that's a disgrace of potholes everywhere.
- 3:26Speaker 3: These are like craters there. This is the kind that
- 3:29Speaker 3: you will lose a small car and not just bust
- 3:32Speaker 3: a tire. So again, it's going to be a little
- 3:34Speaker 3: slow going through that area. They're out, the road crews
- 3:36Speaker 3: are out saying they let us know that there are
- 3:38Speaker 3: going to be rolling roadblocks in that area this morning.
- 3:41Speaker 3: So again, if you are going to be traveling in
- 3:43Speaker 3: an area, please use caution and be prepared to wait
- 3:46Speaker 3: a little while. I want to welcome to the show now,
- 3:48Speaker 3: Delegate Hollis Lewis. Good morning, sir, how are you, good morning,
- 3:51Speaker 3: How you doing? Thank you for having me on. So
- 3:53Speaker 3: you were okay, and you were high five and everything
- 3:55Speaker 3: I was saying there about those.
- 3:56Speaker 5: Potholes, and again I roll cruise. They're doing a fabulous job.
- 3:59Speaker 5: But I wrote of taking a meeting with the winning
- 4:01Speaker 5: and assault and everything like that, and we're not careful.
- 4:03Speaker 3: And we're not done yet. Yes, and I were talking
- 4:05Speaker 3: before the show. You said you like the four seasons.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I do too. However, I think I'm over it. I'm
- 4:09Speaker 3: over the two point last season. Yeah, yeah, I have.
- 4:14Speaker 3: You're a delegate out of fifty seventh.
- 4:15Speaker 6: Yes, sir, South Charleston.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Done are a little bit of Chelston. All right. I
- 4:18Speaker 3: appreciate you as always being on the show. A couple
- 4:20Speaker 3: of things I want to talk to you about. First
- 4:23Speaker 3: of all, yesterday was inauguration day for new Governor Patrick Morrisey.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Thoughts on working we're working with a new governor.
- 4:30Speaker 5: You know, again, there's some things we're going to disagree on,
- 4:32Speaker 5: some things we agree on, but I'm looking forward to
- 4:34Speaker 5: moving moving West Virginia forward and hopefully we can get
- 4:36Speaker 5: some stuff done.
- 4:37Speaker 3: What are some of the things on your agenda. We'll
- 4:40Speaker 3: probably have you on before the session starts, because again
- 4:42Speaker 3: a bit of a delay because of the governor coming
- 4:44Speaker 3: in it's now going to be February twelfth, but want
- 4:46Speaker 3: some things on the Hollis Lewis agenda.
- 4:48Speaker 5: Well, again, one thing the Governor I will agree on
- 4:50Speaker 5: is teachers. I think we have to figure out a
- 4:53Speaker 5: way to raise teachers, pay, to give them more time
- 4:56Speaker 5: of me in the classroom, and you know, to improve
- 4:59Speaker 5: our children's education overall. So that's definitely one thing I'm
- 5:02Speaker 5: looking forward to work with the governor.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I talked about this last week, actually talked about it
- 5:08Speaker 3: twice last week. I brought it in Fred Persinger, the
- 5:10Speaker 3: voice of high school sports in West Virginia. Then I
- 5:11Speaker 3: also talked to your counterpart, Delegate Dana Ferrell about this
- 5:15Speaker 3: and has to do with the high school transfer role.
- 5:17Speaker 3: And you were listening to the show that day. You
- 5:19Speaker 3: texted me during the show he said, I'd like to
- 5:22Speaker 3: come on and talk about this. And I always make
- 5:24Speaker 3: time available for any of the legislators and want to
- 5:27Speaker 3: come on. What is it about this you wanted to
- 5:29Speaker 3: talk about?
- 5:30Speaker 5: Well, again as delicate Ferral highlighted and Fred person can
- 5:33Speaker 5: they all highlighted? It's definitely a problem. But I think
- 5:36Speaker 5: what we've done we painted ourselves into a corner because
- 5:39Speaker 5: we're talking about the Hope Scholarship. You're talking about freedom
- 5:42Speaker 5: of choice of school and letting parents do what they
- 5:44Speaker 5: want as far as their children of education. We cannot
- 5:47Speaker 5: tell parents on one hand, hey, you can send your
- 5:49Speaker 5: kid to any school you want, but somehow limit them
- 5:52Speaker 5: on the activities that they can play because a parent
- 5:55Speaker 5: may be sending their kid to this school or that
- 5:57Speaker 5: school for a variety of reasons. That's education plus activity,
- 6:01Speaker 5: ban robotics club or sports. So I guess my big
- 6:05Speaker 5: question is is that And it's something I've pondered and
- 6:07Speaker 5: tried to come up with solutions.
- 6:08Speaker 3: What do we do about this? Because I don't see
- 6:10Speaker 3: it stopping.
- 6:10Speaker 5: I don't know legislative what we can do to stop
- 6:14Speaker 5: transfer and when we are allowing kids and parents to
- 6:17Speaker 5: choose what school they want to go to and beyond
- 6:19Speaker 5: the boundaries or where they live at.
- 6:20Speaker 3: So what I'm hearing you say here, and I don't
- 6:21Speaker 3: want to put words in your mouth is is And
- 6:23Speaker 3: that's an interesting argument or extra interesting point in the
- 6:27Speaker 3: whole thing is on one hand, this is your words.
- 6:30Speaker 3: On one hand, we're saying parents should have the school
- 6:32Speaker 3: choice to be able to send their kids wherever they want.
- 6:34Speaker 3: But when it comes to it's like, I guess, not
- 6:38Speaker 3: a lot of people seem to care that much about this,
- 6:41Speaker 3: or it wasn't top of mind until we started seeing
- 6:43Speaker 3: lopsided football scores.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's an effect of what's going on.
- 6:47Speaker 5: And again, I want to be clear, I'm definitely pro
- 6:49Speaker 5: public education. I support our teachers in public schools. However,
- 6:53Speaker 5: I think you know charter schools and you know school
- 6:55Speaker 5: choice has its place. But if this is the direction
- 6:58Speaker 5: that we're going, can't tell you that you can send
- 7:01Speaker 5: your kid any school you want and then try to
- 7:03Speaker 5: limit the activities that they participate in said school. That
- 7:06Speaker 5: doesn't make sense.
- 7:08Speaker 3: We're talking to Delegate to Hollis Lewis for Dave iled
- 7:10Speaker 3: Joe and five any line brought to you in part
- 7:12Speaker 3: by Pinnacle Consultants. Pinnacle offers four phase assessment for your properties, inspection, sampling,
- 7:17Speaker 3: that analysis, comprehensive reporting, the management planning this Pinnacle Court,
- 7:20Speaker 3: Pinnacle Court dot net. Because what you don't know can
- 7:23Speaker 3: hurt you. So, if anything, do you think the legislature
- 7:26Speaker 3: should be involved in this at all? Because there's been
- 7:28Speaker 3: other people that have said, hey, this needs much like
- 7:31Speaker 3: we saw with other things related to school, this needs
- 7:33Speaker 3: to go back to the Secondary School's Activities Commission. They
- 7:35Speaker 3: need to work this. That not the legislature. Your take.
- 7:38Speaker 5: Again, we've seen what happened when they tried to work
- 7:40Speaker 5: it out, right, We've seen what happened with the playoffs
- 7:42Speaker 5: and the class reclassifications, and it was a big cluster
- 7:47Speaker 5: to say the least this past or the least football season.
- 7:50Speaker 5: So I think the legislator or I think we should
- 7:51Speaker 5: at least have an opinion. I think we should be
- 7:53Speaker 5: able to review it. And I think it's you know,
- 7:56Speaker 5: it's something that's going to take all the input possible
- 8:00Speaker 5: or to solve. And one of the things that I think,
- 8:02Speaker 5: and again, this is something eric A Senator Eric Tarta
- 8:05Speaker 5: mentioned he talked about because he was asked the same question, well,
- 8:08Speaker 5: how do smaller schools compete? Right, He was asked that,
- 8:11Speaker 5: so he said, you know, the coaches have to create
- 8:14Speaker 5: an environment in which kids want to come. So I
- 8:17Speaker 5: think we need possibly one solution. I'm not saying this
- 8:20Speaker 5: is the only solution, but a possible solution is that
- 8:23Speaker 5: we need to make coaching positions, particularly in those revenue
- 8:26Speaker 5: generating sports. You know, men's basketball, football, women's basketball's positions
- 8:31Speaker 5: uninto themselves, right, so they can be salary positions. So
- 8:35Speaker 5: cause again, if you're at a smaller school, not only
- 8:38Speaker 5: you fighting smaller school budgets and different things like that,
- 8:40Speaker 5: you're also fighting your time being a part time coach
- 8:42Speaker 5: because you have another forty hour job, family obligations, and
- 8:45Speaker 5: whatever else you may have going on. So I think
- 8:48Speaker 5: we one solution is that we could possibly make those
- 8:51Speaker 5: positions salary positions where that's what you do, similar to
- 8:55Speaker 5: how they do it in Texas. In different thingys, particularly
- 8:58Speaker 5: southern states throughout the United States, it's.
- 9:00Speaker 3: A little bit different than back when I was in school,
- 9:03Speaker 3: you know, because and I was in school, your high
- 9:06Speaker 3: school football coach was a teacher. You usually saw them money,
- 9:09Speaker 3: you know, they were they were the driver. Some now
- 9:11Speaker 3: there were, there are a lot of drivers at the
- 9:13Speaker 3: teachers job, stuff like that. But you passed the coach
- 9:18Speaker 3: in the hall and they would even get on you
- 9:20Speaker 3: a little bit and say, are you come to a
- 9:21Speaker 3: game tonight or whatever, and that for one reason or another,
- 9:26Speaker 3: that kind of went away years ago. It seems like
- 9:28Speaker 3: that you know that and you have the coach of
- 9:30Speaker 3: this school, is teaching at that school, or as you said,
- 9:34Speaker 3: they're they're holding down another forty hour week job there.
- 9:37Speaker 3: They're being a nurse, they're being a police officer, whatever
- 9:40Speaker 3: it is that they're doing, and then they're going to coach. Now,
- 9:43Speaker 3: that's an interesting concert because I don't think I've heard
- 9:45Speaker 3: that brought.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Up, because I think with my solution again, that coach
- 9:47Speaker 5: could still be in the school.
- 9:49Speaker 7: Now.
- 9:49Speaker 5: You may not be a you know, teaching class. I mean,
- 9:51Speaker 5: you may feel some glass, be a sub when somebody's out,
- 9:53Speaker 5: maybe do some disciplinary stuff, but you can have your
- 9:56Speaker 5: forty hour job in the school. However, your primary is
- 10:00Speaker 5: to be the coach of this football or basketball team.
- 10:03Speaker 5: And that way you can start to work on budgets,
- 10:06Speaker 5: you can go fundraise, you can do all the things
- 10:08Speaker 5: that you don't necessarily have time to do when you're
- 10:11Speaker 5: doing something else. So I think again, in order to
- 10:15Speaker 5: maybe curb that creative balance, because again, you got a
- 10:18Speaker 5: lot of guys who know and women too, who know
- 10:21Speaker 5: a lot about their sports, who study, who work hard
- 10:23Speaker 5: at but again, you only got so much time in
- 10:25Speaker 5: the day, right and again when we look at the
- 10:29Speaker 5: salary or the stiping that the coaches get it's not
- 10:32Speaker 5: that great for the time that they put in.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I would agree with that most of them. What
- 10:37Speaker 3: what do you hear from your constituents on this subject?
- 10:40Speaker 5: You know, a large part of my district is South Charleston, right,
- 10:44Speaker 5: so nobody has been beat up more by the transporporter
- 10:48Speaker 5: than we have. I mean, we went from a perennial
- 10:50Speaker 5: championship team and again I coached at South Charleston. I
- 10:52Speaker 5: was a coach South Charleston Dunbar for years and years.
- 10:56Speaker 5: So we went from a playoff team, perennial champion to
- 10:59Speaker 5: we're you know, scoring you know, fourteen twenty one points
- 11:03Speaker 5: in the season, winning maybe one or two games.
- 11:05Speaker 3: In a season in a scene.
- 11:07Speaker 5: And I mean it was rough right when it win
- 11:09Speaker 5: in one or two games in the last three, four
- 11:11Speaker 5: or five seasons. So again, our our my district architsition
- 11:15Speaker 5: definitely want to see a turnaround. We want to offer
- 11:17Speaker 5: some solutions as well.
- 11:19Speaker 3: Bella at Hollis Lewis, it's always a pleasure to have
- 11:20Speaker 3: you in the show. You run up some interesting points
- 11:22Speaker 3: today and I always like to have people on that
- 11:24Speaker 3: come up with, you know, ideas out of left field.
- 11:26Speaker 3: You know, a little bit a little bit different because
- 11:29Speaker 3: it's definitely a problem and in a big picture of
- 11:31Speaker 3: things people and I've had I've spent you know, a
- 11:34Speaker 3: lot of time talking about this issue. And I've had
- 11:36Speaker 3: people and I get it, you know the text of
- 11:38Speaker 3: the show and said, well, you know, why are you
- 11:39Speaker 3: spending so much time talking about athletics. It's this story
- 11:43Speaker 3: is not necessarily just about athletics, because you get into
- 11:47Speaker 3: a whole community pride thing, and you get it. And
- 11:50Speaker 3: when your community, you mentioned South Charleston, when they are decimated,
- 11:55Speaker 3: it brings down the whole whole, the whole communities.
- 11:58Speaker 6: We talking about two different comunities.
- 11:59Speaker 5: And I want to say this, I'm a product, I'm
- 12:01Speaker 5: a kid of you know, I went to high school.
- 12:03Speaker 5: Academics was not first on my list, you know. I
- 12:05Speaker 5: was there and I want to play sports, play football particularly,
- 12:08Speaker 5: and that's kind of what got me through. And as
- 12:10Speaker 5: I went through high school and then was able to
- 12:12Speaker 5: go to college on an athletic scholarship, I figured out, hey,
- 12:14Speaker 5: I wouldn't going to the NFL, so my as well,
- 12:16Speaker 5: hit these books. So athletics was the conduit for me
- 12:20Speaker 5: to get to an academic and which eventually led me
- 12:22Speaker 5: to law school. So for the pathway for success for
- 12:25Speaker 5: kids is different. So athletics is definitely one of them.
- 12:27Speaker 5: So that's why it's important. And then again and it
- 12:29Speaker 5: brings the community together. So when you talk about South
- 12:31Speaker 5: Charleston High School, we have Dumbare we have South Charleston,
- 12:34Speaker 5: two powerful communities that come together and celebrate.
- 12:36Speaker 3: So it's important. And sometimes athletics is the only thing
- 12:39Speaker 3: that are keeping kids in school hundred percent. And I
- 12:41Speaker 3: was a product and you know that again, look at
- 12:44Speaker 3: the numbers. They're not going to make it to the NFL.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Many aren't going to play a down of organized football
- 12:49Speaker 3: out of high school.
- 12:50Speaker 6: Hundred percent and anything.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Appreciate you being here, man, Thanks a lot, Thank you sir,
- 12:54Speaker 3: and have a great session. But don't talk to you
- 12:56Speaker 3: before the session, all right, Thanks, all right, delicate. Hollis

- 15:50Speaker 3: a lot of texts to get to. I'm going to
- 15:52Speaker 3: spend some time a little bit later on the show
- 15:54Speaker 3: talking about some of these vacancies that have come up
- 15:58Speaker 3: in the legislature. Now we've got you know, Mark Hunt,
- 16:02Speaker 3: who was elected by the people to be the State
- 16:03Speaker 3: Auditor that leads his position open, Eric Nelson, who is
- 16:07Speaker 3: going to be the new revenue chief for now Governor
- 16:10Speaker 3: Patrick Morrissey. So I do have some inside information I
- 16:13Speaker 3: want to throw about some of those seats because they're
- 16:15Speaker 3: going to have to be filled. I'll throw that out
- 16:17Speaker 3: to you a little bit later on. But we did
- 16:18Speaker 3: have a text. We said Ernest Blevins is going to
- 16:21Speaker 3: be applying for the seventeenth Senate vacancy. He's been a
- 16:24Speaker 3: candidate on more than one occasions, and so I don't
- 16:27Speaker 3: know that he texted the show. I'm gonna say probably
- 16:29Speaker 3: came from Ernest, but that's okay. He wanted us though
- 16:32Speaker 3: he's going to be applying, and wish him the best
- 16:35Speaker 3: of luck. Let me see, Okay, I'm gonna hold off
- 16:42Speaker 3: on I got a bunch of texts. I'm gonna hold

- 16:45Speaker 3: I will get to those texts, I promise, but I

- 16:50Speaker 3: Last week, Charleston City Council met and among the action
- 16:52Speaker 3: items taken was the naming of a new city councilman
- 16:55Speaker 3: from Ward fifteen, the previous holder of that Sam Minardi
- 16:58Speaker 3: reside to take his place as Harper Gardner, and he
- 17:01Speaker 3: joins us this morning, councilman, good morning, welcome to the showy.
- 17:04Speaker 6: Day of good morning. How are you now?
- 17:05Speaker 3: Have you officially been sworn into? That happened to me
- 17:07Speaker 3: last year?
- 17:07Speaker 6: So I can call you council last Thursday the ninth,
- 17:10Speaker 6: I was sworning right during first party Council.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Okay, all right, so tell us about Harper Gardener.
- 17:14Speaker 6: So born and raised here. The last time I was here,
- 17:17Speaker 6: we were trying to figure out all of us how
- 17:20Speaker 6: to say big lely piggly wiggly all at the same time.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Challenge it a challenge.
- 17:25Speaker 6: So born and raised here, have two kids. I ran
- 17:28Speaker 6: for this seat, this Ward seat, two years ago, lost
- 17:31Speaker 6: by one hundred and three votes. So I was honored
- 17:34Speaker 6: to be appointed by the Mayor and Council to be
- 17:37Speaker 6: able to fill this seat from Sam who his dedication
- 17:39Speaker 6: to service to the city over the last decade plus
- 17:42Speaker 6: was really incredible. Some big shoes to fill.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Now explain District fifteen. I'm sorry Ward fifteen.
- 17:47Speaker 6: Ward fifteen, So generally speaking, Ward fifteen is the backside
- 17:51Speaker 6: of South Hills. It is Clark Road to City limits
- 17:54Speaker 6: and then Connell Rode down. I do have some on
- 17:57Speaker 6: the front of the hill, like I go Downbridge Road
- 18:00Speaker 6: to that Chiropractor office right there, cross from the Bridge Road,
- 18:03Speaker 6: Marts right there, and then all of Overbrook Road and
- 18:07Speaker 6: then Ravina and then where I am up on Observatory.
- 18:09Speaker 6: So I've got all four schools up there, Holtz, John Adams,
- 18:13Speaker 6: GW and Overbrook.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Tell me on that district. What makes that district so good?
- 18:18Speaker 3: You chose to live there, So tell me what makes
- 18:21Speaker 3: your district the best in the city. One of the
- 18:23Speaker 3: because you're going to have to say that if you're
- 18:26Speaker 3: going to say you're I mean, I'm kidding, because I
- 18:27Speaker 3: know you, sir as You're a council person. You serve
- 18:29Speaker 3: the entire city. But what is the selling point for
- 18:32Speaker 3: your area.
- 18:32Speaker 6: One of the neat things. It's the educational hub for
- 18:34Speaker 6: most of Charleston. So you know, not only the feeder
- 18:37Speaker 6: schools for the George Washington School District, which I believe
- 18:39Speaker 6: is the one of the best schools in the state,
- 18:41Speaker 6: let alone the city. The other thing is it's a
- 18:44Speaker 6: very highly residential zone. There's very few businesses, which is
- 18:47Speaker 6: a really unique set of challenges that we're really solely
- 18:51Speaker 6: focused on providing services to residents, which is when you
- 18:55Speaker 6: break it down, that's what the city should be doing,
- 18:57Speaker 6: is making the city work better for its residents.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Again, we're talking to Harper Gardner, who is the new
- 19:03Speaker 3: city councilman out of Ward fifteen. I want to talk
- 19:06Speaker 3: about Charleston, the city of Charleston, Harper as a whole.
- 19:10Speaker 3: It has his problems, as do all cities, but also
- 19:12Speaker 3: a lot of a lot of good things going on. So, well,
- 19:15Speaker 3: have you played salesman again, because that's kind of what
- 19:17Speaker 3: you do in your prodit.
- 19:18Speaker 6: That's exactly what I do. Yeah, yeah, I work in sales,
- 19:21Speaker 6: always have and so I don't I don't believe in problems.
- 19:24Speaker 6: I believe in opportunities. So Charleston does have some opportunity.
- 19:27Speaker 3: So when you're out and about and people talk to
- 19:30Speaker 3: you about the city of Charleston and you're from here,
- 19:33Speaker 3: and they say, well, why why should I consider moving
- 19:36Speaker 3: my family to Charleston? Why should I consider doing business
- 19:39Speaker 3: in Charleston? What do you tell them?
- 19:40Speaker 2: Well?
- 19:41Speaker 6: I tell them that, one, you know, our geographic location,
- 19:43Speaker 6: we are absolutely blessed to be right here on this river.
- 19:46Speaker 6: All the amazing recreational opportunities here. I also believe that
- 19:50Speaker 6: Charleston can be and should be a hub for remote work.
- 19:53Speaker 6: Remote work has become even more popular. If you can
- 19:55Speaker 6: do it anywhere in the world, why not do it
- 19:57Speaker 6: right here. So we're really poised, especially with the expansion
- 20:01Speaker 6: of downtown, the increased opportunities for recreation, the increased educational opportunities,
- 20:06Speaker 6: and the increased entertainment opportunities that we've got downtown. We
- 20:10Speaker 6: really have what, you know, something for everybody coming into
- 20:14Speaker 6: the valley. What's on your to do list as a
- 20:16Speaker 6: city councilor one in the you know, four days that
- 20:20Speaker 6: I've been on council, what a might to do list
- 20:23Speaker 6: is to continue the agenda of a very transparent financial
- 20:27Speaker 6: system within the within the city, working with Ben the
- 20:31Speaker 6: Treasurer and Mayor Amy Goodwin in her administration to make
- 20:34Speaker 6: sure that it is the most transparent, because I really
- 20:37Speaker 6: do have a very deep seated understanding that every dime
- 20:40Speaker 6: the city spends is a taxpayer dollar. It is it
- 20:44Speaker 6: is money that is extracted through taxes that that funds us.
- 20:48Speaker 6: So I'm very aware of that and I very much
- 20:50Speaker 6: want to make sure that that's all in the up
- 20:52Speaker 6: and up and super transparent. The other thing I want
- 20:54Speaker 6: to do is I want to keep increasing the amount
- 20:57Speaker 6: of programming and productivity downtown. We've got to have a
- 20:59Speaker 6: really reinvigorated downtown that works for everybody.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I do.
- 21:06Speaker 3: I need to throw this in here to day Vallance
- 21:08Speaker 3: showing five any Live brought to you part by Husband's

- 21:19Speaker 3: hit you with a couple of topics here and just
- 21:22Speaker 3: get your opinion on. First of all, it's talk about
- 21:24Speaker 3: the Capitol Sports Complex, the proposed I understand now we
- 21:27Speaker 3: can't call it Capital Sports Complex because that's trademarked by
- 21:30Speaker 3: somebody else, but the sports center in question without a
- 21:33Speaker 3: name at.
- 21:33Speaker 6: This point, the sports center formally known as the Capital
- 21:36Speaker 6: Sports Complex.
- 21:36Speaker 3: What do you think? What do you think?
- 21:37Speaker 6: I think it's gonna be amazing if we can get
- 21:40Speaker 6: this thing belt and get the people in place and
- 21:43Speaker 6: get the scheduling. In sports storism, is an amazing source
- 21:47Speaker 6: of revenue. One of the you know, every hotel stay
- 21:51Speaker 6: generates an enormous amount of money in downtown Charleston and
- 21:54Speaker 6: in Charleston City limits in general, not just the taxes
- 21:56Speaker 6: and fees through the hotels, but you know, you've got
- 21:59Speaker 6: to eat three times a day, so those are really
- 22:01Speaker 6: wonderful opportunities. I think that the AAU basketball tournament opportunities
- 22:05Speaker 6: not And you know, the other side of that is
- 22:07Speaker 6: the other side of my career. I spent a lot
- 22:08Speaker 6: of time in senior fitness, senior activities, and senior recreation.
- 22:11Speaker 6: Being able to have those indoor pickleball courts that we've
- 22:13Speaker 6: been talking about there too, is also going to be
- 22:15Speaker 6: amazing for the city of Charleston. But that sports tourism
- 22:18Speaker 6: is really going to really electrify that area of town
- 22:21Speaker 6: and really start driving some big revenues in.
- 22:23Speaker 3: I want to talk about tourism in general. I mean
- 22:26Speaker 3: you mentioned because we the proposed formerly Artists formally known
- 22:29Speaker 3: as the Capital Sports Complex. I know what we've got
- 22:32Speaker 3: going on, not just in downtown Charleston, but around the
- 22:34Speaker 3: areas think Shawnee in places like that. We had the
- 22:36Speaker 3: road race, the bikes you know that were in town.
- 22:38Speaker 3: That was the most probably one of the single most
- 22:40Speaker 3: incredible things that I have ever seen. The return of
- 22:43Speaker 3: Regatta a couple of years ago. How do we put
- 22:46Speaker 3: more into tourism and make people want to come here.
- 22:50Speaker 6: I think Charleston Convention Invents Visitors Bureau is doing such
- 22:54Speaker 6: a fabulous job about finding and bringing these events here.
- 22:57Speaker 6: That bike race, like you said, was incredible watching and
- 23:00Speaker 6: the way that they used the entire city. That was
- 23:03Speaker 6: not just a downtown event where I am up in
- 23:06Speaker 6: South Hills. We were stationed along the road. There are
- 23:08Speaker 6: people along the road the whole way through South Hills
- 23:11Speaker 6: and affected those businesses, the you know, the Bridge Road
- 23:13Speaker 6: shops and those bars and restaurants definitely got a boost
- 23:16Speaker 6: from people watching them run through the Hills. So those
- 23:19Speaker 6: things are are really incredible. Again, Regatta has been you
- 23:22Speaker 6: know that those numbers are incredible, and you've been down
- 23:25Speaker 6: to Regatta, I mean it's wall to wall people For
- 23:27Speaker 6: what people complained before Regatta were kind of off acts.
- 23:31Speaker 6: This past year, it was still packed and I think,
- 23:33Speaker 6: you know, everybody had a really good time. So continuing
- 23:36Speaker 6: those things, finding those unique things like that bike race
- 23:39Speaker 6: that you know, personally, I had never I'm not a cyclist,
- 23:42Speaker 6: I you know, didn't know about that before. But now
- 23:44Speaker 6: that it's here, it's incredible. So we've got to keep
- 23:47Speaker 6: finding those kind of outside the box opportunities to bring
- 23:49Speaker 6: people to showcase this, this jewel that we are right
- 23:52Speaker 6: here on the Kanaal River and Appalacha.
- 23:53Speaker 3: I talked to several business owners downtown, you know from
- 23:56Speaker 3: time to time, and they say that despite the issues
- 24:01Speaker 3: of downtown Charleston, then you hear the complaints or whatever.
- 24:04Speaker 3: A couple of them had record years and in twenty
- 24:07Speaker 3: twenty four, So I don't know what that says, but
- 24:10Speaker 3: it says that despite what you may have heard, people
- 24:13Speaker 3: are still coming to downtown Charleston.
- 24:15Speaker 6: You know, I think people for the first time in
- 24:17Speaker 6: a long time, people feel safer downtown than they used to.
- 24:22Speaker 6: You know, the lighting's better, We've done a better job
- 24:24Speaker 6: with maintenance. City patrols seem to be better downtown. It
- 24:28Speaker 6: just it feels safer, nicer, brighter, in a place for families.
- 24:32Speaker 3: You know, all of the.
- 24:33Speaker 6: Development with Brawley Walkway and the new City Center, that's
- 24:36Speaker 6: all very family friendly. That's not late night bars that
- 24:40Speaker 6: you know that don't serve, you know, families with kids.
- 24:43Speaker 6: So I think that's really important of why downtown has
- 24:47Speaker 6: felt so revitalized.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Talk about a couple of the issues. I mean, you
- 24:51Speaker 3: hear about that, and I know that one of the
- 24:52Speaker 3: things you guys, you folks on city Council and the
- 24:55Speaker 3: may are going to be looking at is this proposed
- 24:57Speaker 3: panhandling ordinance. It's been it's been grown out there about
- 25:01Speaker 3: this particular situation.
- 25:04Speaker 10: I know.
- 25:04Speaker 3: I've had Counselman Robinson on the show in the past
- 25:06Speaker 3: and they're going to have continue to have discussions about
- 25:10Speaker 3: this in twenty twenty five about a proposed panhandling ordinance.
- 25:14Speaker 3: But now this would not just impact you know, the
- 25:17Speaker 3: gas standing there with a sign asking for money. This
- 25:19Speaker 3: could also impact the sports team, you know, but it's
- 25:22Speaker 3: out there, that's depending on where they're standing. That seems
- 25:25Speaker 3: to be the thing, the safety issue. Where are you
- 25:27Speaker 3: on all that?
- 25:28Speaker 6: So that's that was last broughtz Council two meetings before me.
- 25:33Speaker 6: But I've read it. I've read the revise when it's
- 25:35Speaker 6: back down to committee now it's been largely cleaned up.
- 25:38Speaker 6: But you're right, there aren't in the current draft of
- 25:41Speaker 6: what is in Rules in public what's been sent to
- 25:44Speaker 6: rules in public safety. There aren't exemptions for politicians to
- 25:49Speaker 6: hold signs, fill the boot drives, my son's boy Scout troop,
- 25:54Speaker 6: asking for donations for their car wash that they do annually,
- 25:57Speaker 6: those kind of things. There aren't those kind of exemptions,
- 25:59Speaker 6: and I do under saying what they're doing, because you know,
- 26:01Speaker 6: as you as you come on and off the constant
- 26:04Speaker 6: panhandling in the you know, the entrances and egresses of
- 26:09Speaker 6: the city do kind of pose a danger. If you're
- 26:11Speaker 6: coming off at thirty miles an hour at the Partia
- 26:13Speaker 6: Street exit coming off the interstate and somebody quick stops
- 26:16Speaker 6: in front of you at hand somebody some money, that
- 26:19Speaker 6: does pose kind of a public safety issue. So I
- 26:22Speaker 6: really do look forward to working with counsel. I will
- 26:25Speaker 6: be attending those committee meetings as it's discussed, So you know,
- 26:29Speaker 6: I definitely am going to have my pulse finger on
- 26:31Speaker 6: the pulse of this one and we'll see how it goes.
- 26:33Speaker 3: I was having some conversation last night with another councilman,
- 26:36Speaker 3: Sean Taylor, who I'm going to have on the show.
- 26:38Speaker 3: I think he sent me a text. I think it's
- 26:40Speaker 3: Friday I think I'll have to go back to and
- 26:42Speaker 3: take a look at that. But about the municipal auditorium,
- 26:45Speaker 3: what are we going to do with the municipal auditorium.
- 26:47Speaker 3: There's been studies done that says, look, it's cheaper and
- 26:50Speaker 3: just to raise this thing and maybe start anew and
- 26:52Speaker 3: then others because of the historical significance, don't want to
- 26:57Speaker 3: go that route. I know you're new. I hate to
- 26:59Speaker 3: hit you with all these things the top. No, no,
- 27:00Speaker 3: I'm glad, but but do you have an opinion on that?
- 27:03Speaker 6: So my very first vote on city Council was actually
- 27:05Speaker 6: to approve a study to look at being able to
- 27:09Speaker 6: keep the facade. So we'll obviously see more as this
- 27:12Speaker 6: study comes in, this engineering and architectural study comes in,
- 27:16Speaker 6: but they're they're looking to see if, because the enormous
- 27:20Speaker 6: amount of public output was to try to keep the facade,
- 27:23Speaker 6: that that twenties retro kind of modern design on the
- 27:30Speaker 6: front is what everybody really wanted to keep. The understanding
- 27:33Speaker 6: is is the building behind it largely can't be So
- 27:36Speaker 6: if we can keep that facade, we'll do it. If not,
- 27:39Speaker 6: I firmly believe the city is going to be able
- 27:41Speaker 6: to put something that's going to be game changing incredible
- 27:45Speaker 6: in there for the city. Either way, being able to
- 27:47Speaker 6: expand the footprint make it more appealing to modern artists
- 27:51Speaker 6: to come through. So we're going to be able to
- 27:52Speaker 6: get those mid sized artists that aren't necessarily going to
- 27:56Speaker 6: sell out the Colisseum Bowl, but be able to still
- 27:59Speaker 6: have a thirty five hundred see auditorium, but then still
- 28:01Speaker 6: be able to scale that down to a thousand seat
- 28:03Speaker 6: for children's theater. So I firmly believe that once we
- 28:07Speaker 6: get through this kind of architectural study and we then
- 28:10Speaker 6: know what we're working with, the city's gonna be able
- 28:12Speaker 6: to put together something incredible for that property.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Chusta City Council and in Harpergardner, what's the best way

- 28:18Speaker 3: an email address or anything you want to throw out there.

- 28:24Speaker 6: I give you my personal email address. It's on the

- 32:19Speaker 3: back to the high school transfer rule, I was talking
- 32:20Speaker 3: to Delegate Hollis Lewis a little bit earlier in the show.
- 32:23Speaker 3: Text says I would offer that the difference between the
- 32:27Speaker 3: academics and the programs like athletics are not that academics.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Hold on, I totally screwed that. Let me start that again.
- 32:34Speaker 3: Take two. Text says I would offer that the difference
- 32:37Speaker 3: between the academics and the programs like athletics are that
- 32:40Speaker 3: academics are mandatory and athletics are not. So if you're
- 32:44Speaker 3: truly transferring for academics as a priority, maybe athletics needs
- 32:48Speaker 3: to take a step back in its proper place, says
- 32:52Speaker 3: a texture. Uh text says these text are kind of
- 32:56Speaker 3: all over the place. That would be a trick for
- 32:59Speaker 3: Morrissey to raise teacher pay concerning he's going to expand
- 33:03Speaker 3: to the idiot Hope scholarship that does nothing save money
- 33:06Speaker 3: away from public schools and gift to people that don't
- 33:08Speaker 3: want their children educated, the unschooled or rich white people
- 33:12Speaker 3: that have to have a private school to begin with,
- 33:15Speaker 3: says a text. Texas Dave. I remember several years ago
- 33:22Speaker 3: when the major repair was made to the Fort Hill Bridge,
- 33:24Speaker 3: an official with the Department of Highways said, quote repair
- 33:27Speaker 3: would never have to be done again, Well, it's being
- 33:29Speaker 3: done today and again. If you missed the first part
- 33:32Speaker 3: of the show, and you miss Jeff Jenkins newscast, they
- 33:34Speaker 3: have got rolling I understand again I'm sending him a
- 33:37Speaker 3: little studio here, so I really can't see it, but
- 33:39Speaker 3: I understand that they are scheduling rolling roadblocks in the
- 33:42Speaker 3: area coming to to Charleston around Oakwood Road because there
- 33:45Speaker 3: are some massive, massive potholes. And again I was one
- 33:49Speaker 3: of those that was doing three miles an hour, you know,
- 33:51Speaker 3: coming to Charleston this morning around seven thirty or so
- 33:54Speaker 3: when I saw one of those, and my vehicle doesn't
- 33:57Speaker 3: set that high off the ground, and I was like, yeah,
- 34:00Speaker 3: I go in that and it's going to be like
- 34:02Speaker 3: a cartoon or like smoking the bandit. You're just going
- 34:05Speaker 3: to see the trunk part of my vehicle, you know,
- 34:08Speaker 3: sticking out. So just use caution. You have been warned
- 34:11Speaker 3: about the traffic issues around Charleston today, Dave says, a texture,
- 34:18Speaker 3: you're going to mention the five million dollars in taxpayer
- 34:20Speaker 3: dollars the West Virginia Water authority is given to the
- 34:23Speaker 3: Catholic Church in Ohio. Why is taxpayer dollars going to
- 34:26Speaker 3: a religious organization, much less one out of state so
- 34:28Speaker 3: they can expand their footprint and indoctrination. Unconstitutional perhaps, And
- 34:34Speaker 3: why does the Catholic Church need taxpayer money? Don't they
- 34:37Speaker 3: have billions and assets and pillaged gold. Big thanks to
- 34:40Speaker 3: the ACLU for defending the constitution and looking out for
- 34:43Speaker 3: West Virginians. Well, I have talked about it on the show.
- 34:46Speaker 3: A matter of fact, I will say this. I'll get
- 34:48Speaker 3: a little preview to the guys that come after me,
- 34:51Speaker 3: Dave Wilson and TJ Meadows hosting talk Line coming up
- 34:54Speaker 3: at ten o six, and TJ will do a run
- 34:56Speaker 3: in here as he always does, at the end of
- 34:57Speaker 3: this show. But I can say that they are going
- 35:00Speaker 3: to talk about it in depth today. As a matter
- 35:02Speaker 3: of fact, I do believe that State Democratic Party Chair
- 35:05Speaker 3: and delicate Mike Pushkin is going to weigh in on
- 35:07Speaker 3: the subject again. We have a story posted about it
- 35:09Speaker 3: on the website. The ACLU has filed a lawsuit, and
- 35:13Speaker 3: I got some notes on that. I'll get into a
- 35:14Speaker 3: little bit later on if we get time, But yeah,
- 35:16Speaker 3: it's going to be discussed in full. I mentioned it
- 35:18Speaker 3: a little last week. These guys are going to do
- 35:20Speaker 3: a deep dive on it on talk Line coming up
- 35:22Speaker 3: at ten six. Tex says, Dave, did you see the
- 35:25Speaker 3: inauguration of Morrissey. I'll step in and say I did.
- 35:29Speaker 3: It looked like low energy, empty and depressing, foreshadowing for
- 35:32Speaker 3: the next four years. I suppose.
- 35:33Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 35:34Speaker 3: I wasn't in attendance in person, but I did watch
- 35:37Speaker 3: it on metroduced TV. I don't know a Pine on
- 35:40Speaker 3: a couple of things on that coming up a little
- 35:42Speaker 3: bit later on Tex says your guest City Council and
- 35:45Speaker 3: Harper Gardner must have missed the memo on remote work,
- 35:48Speaker 3: middle management and office real estate space need a use.
- 35:51Speaker 3: So remote work is going to be a thing of
- 35:53Speaker 3: the past. It is going to be a thing of
- 35:54Speaker 3: the pass in some areas. But I think you can't
- 35:57Speaker 3: put the milk back in the container, as they say.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Coming up on Tomor's show, our good friend nutrition expert
- 36:03Speaker 3: Millie Snyder is going to be here. Greg Thomas will
- 36:05Speaker 3: be here to talk about some politics and whatever else
- 36:08Speaker 3: is on the mind of mister Thomas. Also, John Carruthers
- 36:11Speaker 3: of Best Virginia Heating and Cooling will be stopping by,
- 36:14Speaker 3: you know, not so much talking about what a great
- 36:16Speaker 3: company they are. They are, by the way, a great company,
- 36:19Speaker 3: but he has a program this company does to help
- 36:21Speaker 3: those who may be having a little trouble with their
- 36:23Speaker 3: heating and cooling systems. It's a great program. We're going
- 36:27Speaker 3: to get into that with John Caruthers coming up on
- 36:28Speaker 3: the show tomorrow. Plus, your calls and texts are welcome
- 36:31Speaker 3: to do want to remind you about the upcoming WVRC
- 36:34Speaker 3: Media Sock Drop which is happening one week from this
- 36:37Speaker 3: Thursday on our parking lot here at eleven eleven Virginia

- 36:44Speaker 3: to have our staff on the lot all day to

- 36:50Speaker 3: about yesterday, there are several places that you can get
- 36:53Speaker 3: good quality, inexpensive socks. Marshall's Olly's had a listener to
- 36:59Speaker 3: the show yesterday who texted me that are good friends
- 37:03Speaker 3: at eight is the outlet and Jefferson had some affordably
- 37:05Speaker 3: priced heated socks, so that could be a place for

- 37:46Speaker 3: check Living New Deal dot org for some more about
- 37:51Speaker 3: the auditorium history as part of the New Deal, says
- 37:54Speaker 3: a texture. It says Texas Dave, it was so great
- 37:59Speaker 3: to hear chance of USA USA erupt from The audience
- 38:03Speaker 3: contained a lot of military members as Pete Hegseth and
- 38:06Speaker 3: his family enter the room for his Defense Secretary Senate confirmation.
- 38:09Speaker 3: Hearing sounds like members of the US military have decided
- 38:12Speaker 3: who they want representing them, says a Texture. Tex says,
- 38:18Speaker 3: I hope everyone understands after the events in Los Angeles
- 38:21Speaker 3: this week, the homelessness is not a choice. It's devastating
- 38:24Speaker 3: whoever you are, for whatever reason you find yourself on
- 38:26Speaker 3: the streets. Instead of viewing the unhoused with scorn, maybe
- 38:29Speaker 3: we could all pull together more to help them, like
- 38:33Speaker 3: everyone's doing for the people of LA. I've made my
- 38:39Speaker 3: opinions on that known in the past, you can't tell me.
- 38:44Speaker 3: And if you talk to people that deal with the
- 38:46Speaker 3: homeless on a regular basis, you can't tell me that
- 38:48Speaker 3: every one of them is there because they have nowhere
- 38:51Speaker 3: else to go. There are people that do choose that lifestyle.
- 38:53Speaker 3: And if you are saying that there aren't people that
- 38:56Speaker 3: choose that lifestyle, then you are greatly mistaken. Again all cases,
- 39:00Speaker 3: I'm saying, there are those that do make do make
- 39:03Speaker 3: that choice. So now we have a new governor. Actually,
- 39:06Speaker 3: Governor Patrick Morrissey was sworn in at midnight Sunday slash Monday,
- 39:11Speaker 3: but all the ceremonial stuff took place yesterday. The inaugur
- 39:15Speaker 3: ball held last night, the parades, et cetera, et cetera.
- 39:18Speaker 3: As I mentioned earlier, I watched the governor's speech yesterday
- 39:21Speaker 3: morning on Metro News TV cheap Plug and we had
- 39:25Speaker 3: the whole thing live on the on the air as well.
- 39:29Speaker 3: You know, the speech I thought was pretty much what
- 39:31Speaker 3: you would expect. And I don't say that in a
- 39:33Speaker 3: negative way. I don't, but it was just pretty much
- 39:37Speaker 3: what you would expect. It's a row ross Beach saying
- 39:39Speaker 3: we're going to go to work, and that's you know,
- 39:41Speaker 3: we got things we got to do. By the way,
- 39:43Speaker 3: I will throw this out there. Governor Morrissey has a
- 39:46Speaker 3: press conference coming up at eleven I think it is
- 39:50Speaker 3: eleven this morning, will of course be covering that. But
- 39:54Speaker 3: I think he's gonna actually take questions from the press live.
- 39:58Speaker 9: Live.
- 40:00Speaker 3: We'll see. But I think that's the plan. But the
- 40:02Speaker 3: speech itself a couple of things that I thought we
- 40:06Speaker 3: were interesting. One talking about getting read of de I
- 40:11Speaker 3: and look, I've made my my thoughts on most most
- 40:15Speaker 3: de I programs known in the past. Nothing no new
- 40:19Speaker 3: ground for me here. I don't I don't. I don't
- 40:24Speaker 3: know that it's a major issue for West Virginia. But
- 40:26Speaker 3: but but okay, now, if he means in relation to
- 40:29Speaker 3: let's say, West Virginia University or Marshall, okay, you know, fine,
- 40:34Speaker 3: I'm you know, I'm okay with looking at all that.
- 40:38Speaker 3: But it almost and maybe I just read it wrong.
- 40:42Speaker 3: It almost made it sound like the whole DEI thing
- 40:46Speaker 3: was being practiced by the Justice Administration, which which certainly
- 40:50Speaker 3: it it was it was not. But something else I
- 40:54Speaker 3: found very interesting. Two minutes or so uh into into
- 41:01Speaker 3: the speech, he felt the need the governor felt the
- 41:05Speaker 3: need to take a shot in the media the media, Like,
- 41:11Speaker 3: what exactly do you mean when you say the media?
- 41:15Speaker 3: And speaking as a member of the media, again, I
- 41:18Speaker 3: always point out I'm not a journalist by any stretch
- 41:21Speaker 3: of the imagination. I'm just a guy who gets paid
- 41:23Speaker 3: to talk. I don't have an issue with Governor Morrissey
- 41:29Speaker 3: saying that, obviously.
- 41:30Speaker 2: I just.
- 41:32Speaker 3: I just wish sometimes that he and others who decry
- 41:34Speaker 3: the media would just say, what media members you're talking about?
- 41:40Speaker 3: I mean, there isn't some big, giant downtown Charleston office
- 41:45Speaker 3: that's called the media where we all congregate to think
- 41:50Speaker 3: of ways to screw over government officials, regardless of party. Now,
- 41:55Speaker 3: if he was referring to the national media, then say
- 41:59Speaker 3: national media. If he meant the gazette mail, then say
- 42:02Speaker 3: gazette mail. And if he even somebody pointed out to
- 42:07Speaker 3: me this morning, what if he said liberal media. Okay, okay,
- 42:11Speaker 3: I'm fine with that as well. Uh, And please don't
- 42:14Speaker 3: confuse some of the commentators that you read on x
- 42:17Speaker 3: or some podcasters as the media. You know, we're all different,
- 42:22Speaker 3: just like all members of government are different.
- 42:24Speaker 2: You know.
- 42:24Speaker 3: Maybe not a big deal to some, but I just
- 42:26Speaker 3: loathed the fact when people say the media, uh, you know,
- 42:30Speaker 3: be specific as to what media you are talking about,
- 42:34Speaker 3: and if it's one of the TV stations or me
- 42:37Speaker 3: or whatever, just just come on say it. Just hold
- 42:43Speaker 3: the media. I just I don't get him, tex says Dave.
- 42:51Speaker 3: A homeless man died from the cold Saturday on the
- 42:53Speaker 3: streets of Charleston. Yeah. I talked about that. It's a
- 42:54Speaker 3: tragic story. Did he choose to die? We need to
- 42:57Speaker 3: do more. I don't know the specifics of the case. Ps.
- 43:01Speaker 3: I work with the homeless mentle Hill and addicted every day.
- 43:03Speaker 3: We still can do more, says a text Texas. Jesus

- 43:22Speaker 3: I think rich Rod now has more stress for returning
- 43:24Speaker 3: Mountaineer football to for the tradition of winning after being
- 43:27Speaker 3: publicly called out by Morrissey yesterday. Well, now, rich Rod

- 47:35Speaker 3: heard of that are interested or possibly interested in some
- 47:37Speaker 3: open seats. I've heard the name more Capito being thrown
- 47:40Speaker 3: out there. I've heard Mark Carter, who ran for District
- 47:45Speaker 3: fifty seven House and was defeated possibly, So it's just
- 47:47Speaker 3: going to be an interesting watch for sure. TJ. Meadows,
- 47:54Speaker 3: what's up? How are you doing?
- 47:55Speaker 5: Man?
- 47:55Speaker 7: People are going to be coveting that Nelson seat because
- 47:58Speaker 7: that's a four year unexpired term he's handing over.
- 48:01Speaker 3: Yeah, you and I were talking about that in the
- 48:02Speaker 3: office early because he was just elected to that position. So,
- 48:06Speaker 3: but going back to the other one again. I talked
- 48:07Speaker 3: to County Commissioner Lance Wheeler last night and told him
- 48:11Speaker 3: what he'd heard, and he was at the inauguration at
- 48:14Speaker 3: some point yesterday. He said, yeah, I've been hearing it
- 48:15Speaker 3: all day, and I guess he considers it a compliment
- 48:18Speaker 3: that people would think that, you know, he but but
- 48:20Speaker 3: he did say he was interested. Now that't does that
- 48:22Speaker 3: mean he's going to quit his job and go you know, no,
- 48:24Speaker 3: he just said he had an interest. And look, I
- 48:26Speaker 3: don't blame him. I mean, you know, being being Canaw
- 48:28Speaker 3: County commissioner is a very coveted position. The voters put
- 48:31Speaker 3: him in office. But at the same time, Lance is
- 48:34Speaker 3: a relatively young guy with I think it's safe to
- 48:36Speaker 3: say some pretty big political aspirations at some point. He's
- 48:40Speaker 3: not an old guy like I am, so he's looking forward,
- 48:43Speaker 3: not backwards. So you know, he's got some aspirations. It
- 48:46Speaker 3: could be a good position for him if he decides
- 48:48Speaker 3: he wants to go that route, and if the people,
- 48:50Speaker 3: you know, they go through the whole process, Executive Committee
- 48:52Speaker 3: s tomit names to the governor, and the governor chooses.
- 48:54Speaker 7: So could be a good move for him if it
- 48:56Speaker 7: goes that far. Highly qualified guy. We'll see what happens.
- 48:59Speaker 3: All right, what's on the big show today? So coming
- 49:01Speaker 3: up today we started ten oh six with Brad. He's
- 49:03Speaker 3: going to be in. We're going to, of course recap
- 49:05Speaker 3: the inauguration.
- 49:06Speaker 7: I'm sure we'll maybe speculate a little bit about this
- 49:08Speaker 7: presser at eleven that Governor Morrisey has coming up and
- 49:12Speaker 7: back up.
- 49:13Speaker 3: I said this earlier. I don't know if you were
- 49:15Speaker 3: listening or not. Is he actually taking questions? I mean
- 49:18Speaker 3: live questions? That is my understanding. What a novel concept.
- 49:24Speaker 3: But yeah, we'll wait and see. Okay, well, and you
- 49:27Speaker 3: may get to ask a follow up too.
- 49:28Speaker 7: I don't I don't know how that will work, but
- 49:30Speaker 7: at any rate, Brad, I'll be on and we'll we'll
- 49:32Speaker 7: talk about all things Governor Morrissey, and maybe again get
- 49:34Speaker 7: into some speculation more on my part in Dave's part,
- 49:37Speaker 7: probably not Brad on what we'll come out of this
- 49:39Speaker 7: pressor today at eleven o'clock. Could it be DEI that
- 49:43Speaker 7: that an executive order on DEI. Could it be something
- 49:46Speaker 7: to do with all of these commissions and committees that
- 49:48Speaker 7: he talked about.
- 49:49Speaker 3: He's talked about government being bloated and I'm kind of
- 49:52Speaker 3: using I'm paraphrasing there, but he's talked about state government
- 49:54Speaker 3: being bloated and that we got to cut we got
- 49:57Speaker 3: to cut the fat, as they say, yeah, depending on
- 49:58Speaker 3: what it is.
- 49:59Speaker 7: One of the interest things for me here is, you know,
- 50:02Speaker 7: governors typically issue executive orders states of emergency COVID response
- 50:06Speaker 7: to these kinds of things. But those are practical problems
- 50:09Speaker 7: that are facing us. EMINE got to be a solution,
- 50:12Speaker 7: got to be solved now versus policy issues that I
- 50:16Speaker 7: would contend are better left to the legislature because executive
- 50:20Speaker 7: orders are overturned by the next guy. Right, So if
- 50:22Speaker 7: you want some kind of you know, stance on the
- 50:26Speaker 7: issue and you want something binding going forward, I'm not
- 50:29Speaker 7: sure And EO is the best way to do it,
- 50:30Speaker 7: but we'll get into that. Mike Pushkin joins us at
- 50:32Speaker 7: ten thirty three. Of course, he's going to talk about
- 50:34Speaker 7: the DeSoto seat and why the Democrats are filing legal action.
- 50:38Speaker 7: They say a Democrat should be in that seat the
- 50:39Speaker 7: ninety first that was vacated. Of course, Republicans have a
- 50:42Speaker 7: different take, so we'll get into that with Mike. I'm
- 50:44Speaker 7: sure he'll give us some of his thoughts on the
- 50:46Speaker 7: inauguration yesterday as well. Friend of the show Matt Lewis.
- 50:49Speaker 7: He's a nationally syndicated columnist out of Washington, d C.
- 50:53Speaker 7: He's going to talk with us at eleven oh six
- 50:55Speaker 7: about Joe Biden's legacy and why he thinks Trump winning
- 50:58Speaker 7: has all but ruined the legacy going forward and not
- 51:01Speaker 7: much redemption there for Joe Biden. Eleven thirty three. Amanda
- 51:04Speaker 7: Baron of WAWK thirteen News stops by. We'll talk inauguration
- 51:09Speaker 7: with her. Eleven forty five. The legal director for the
- 51:12Speaker 7: ACLU of West Virginia, Aubrey Sparks, ACLU of WV coming
- 51:17Speaker 7: out yesterday and saying they have filed a complaint against
- 51:20Speaker 7: the Water Development Authority over that five million dollar grant
- 51:23Speaker 7: that went to Saint Joseph, the Worker College in Ohio.
- 51:27Speaker 7: We will get into their argument. Understand what they say.
- 51:30Speaker 7: The legal merit here is to dismiss that grant and
- 51:33Speaker 7: go forward.
- 51:34Speaker 3: All right, They'll coming up at ten oh six. Appreciated man,
