Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: What the hell is that?
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: The thing is huge.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Movie theaters versus streaming, Hollywood versus my couch.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, it's Kilberka here.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to my channel.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Tom Cruise can hang off an airplane.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: He can climb a skyscraper.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: He can ride a motorcycle off a mountain.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: But getting us off the couch, apparently that's stunt, requires a different insurance policy.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Last week we talked about Digger versus Variety.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: This week, with the opening weekend, estimates came in.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: About$8 million for Digger in North America versus about 32.6 million for Variety.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: But I'm not doing another 12 rounds of thumb versus ad.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: They have agents, they can arrange that themselves.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: I have a bigger question.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: What does a movie have to do in 2026 to make you put on pants?
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Proper pants.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: I mean outside pants.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Pants with button and consequences.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Gilbert K Show.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I'm Gilbert, and this is the Gilbert K Take.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Today we're talking about movie theaters, streaming, box office surprises, and the most powerful competitor Hollywood has ever faced.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: My couch.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: No agent, no publicist, excellent back support.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: The couch has a very strong offer.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Hollywood keeps asking.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: How do we bring audiences back?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Well, first understand the offer you're competing against.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: At home, I have snacks.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: I know where the bathroom is.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Nobody makes me climb over six knees because I drank something the size of a municipal water tower.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: I can pause the movie and that's power.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: But still, the couch is available, comfortable, and doesn't make me validate parking.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: That's a tough opponent.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: The movie starts before you reach the theater.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Here's my theory.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: When we decide whether to see a movie, we aren't only judging the trailer.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: We're judging the entire evening.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Can I get there?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Who's coming?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: What time does it finish?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Do I have work tomorrow?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Is it raining?
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Do I want to deal with the traffic?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: In Toronto, getting to the movie can have a beginning, middle, and emotional breakdown.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: The GPS says 20 minutes, and that's the tweezer trailer.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: The actual journey is a director's cut.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: You arrive, find parking, buy the tickets, and approach the concession stand like you're about to negotiate a mortgage.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Would you like to make it that the combo?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I'd like to make that affordable.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I'm exaggerating, obviously.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Prices depend on where you go and what you buy.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: But you know the feeling.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: You went out for a movie.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Somehow you're reviewing your financial choices under picture of a hot dog.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: The movie has to earn that evening.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: That's my point.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: It isn't only competing with another film, it's competing with the effort of leaving the house.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: I like the actor.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: That doesn't mean I'm buying everything.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: Now, movie stars still matter.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: A familiar face can make me stop scrolling, but stopping my thumb and moving my entire body are two different achievements.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: I can love an actor and still say, I'll watch this later.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And that's not betrayal.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Same with movies.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Tell me what the experience is.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Is this funny?
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Is it frightening?
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Is it an adventure?
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Am I going to cry?
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Do I need to remember 12 other movies?
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Any show I never finished?
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Give me a reason to care about this particular movie.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: A star gets my attention.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: The promise of a good night gets my money.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: A trailer is a promise.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Here's where I put my filmmaker hat on.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Very expensive hat.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: No funding attached.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: When I watch a trailer, I'm asking a simple question.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: What are you promising me?
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Two hours of laughs?
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: A mystery I can stop thinking about, a monster that makes me reconsider walking to the kitchen at night.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Great, I understand the deal.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: But sometimes the trailer gives me a helicopter, somebody crying, a city exploding, and a man whispering.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: You don't understand?
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Correct, I don't.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: That's why I'm watching the trailer.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Help me.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: A good trailer makes me curious.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: It lets me feel what kind of ride I'm buying.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: I don't need every detail, I need a reason to say, let's go.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Waiting has become part of the decision.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Then there's a sentence Hollywood probably doesn't enjoy hearing, I'll wait for streaming.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Not every movie reaches streaming quickly and the timing varies.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: But knowing a home release will eventually exist changes the decision.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: We ask, do I need to see this now?
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And that's a tougher question than would I watch this?
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: But streaming has its own tricks.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: You see the movie you want, you click, rent for an additional fee, additional to what?
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: The subscription I'm already paying to admire your menu and the subscription add up quietly.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: One is for the show you're watching, one is for the show you're planning to watch, and one is for the show you finished six months ago but forgot to cancel.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: That's not a streaming plan, that's a museum of good intentions.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: So the couch wins on convenience.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: It doesn't automatically win on value.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: And let's stop declaring cinema dead every Monday.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Now an important correction.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: One disappointing opening doesn't mean nobody goes to the movie anymore.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: In fact, the current North America box office reports have this year's revenue ahead of the same point last year.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Revenue isn't the same as the number of tickets sold, but cinema is dead is a much bigger claim than these results support.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Making a movie is hard.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Getting one finance is hard.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Getting in front of the right audience is hard.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: I produce films, believe me, nobody accidentally makes one between breakfast and lunch.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: It takes people, time, money, and disturbing number of emails.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: But the audience doesn't owe us a ticket because the process was difficult.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: They aren't buying our struggle, they are buying an experience.
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: And here's what the theater still does beautifully.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: For all my complaints, I love going to the movies.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I want theaters to succeed.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: There's something special about laughing with a room full of strangers.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: At home, I laugh and the furniture says nothing.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: At a theater, one good joke can move through the whole room.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: For a moment, everyone is on the same wavelength.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: Horror does this beautifully too.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Everybody walks in, acting brave.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Nothing scares me.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: 20 minutes later, a door opens and a grown man has become a cattle.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: No judgment, I might be that cattle.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: But please, other people, meet me halfway.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Put the phone away.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: When your screen lights up, I'm suddenly watching two films.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: The one I paid for and your argument with somebody named Kevin.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: I'm invested now.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Is Kevin coming?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Did he apologize?
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Why did you send a thumbs up after that paragraph?
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: And if you talk through every scene, perhaps you should start a podcast.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: I did.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: There's a microphone, a schedule, and people choose whether to hear me.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: It's a beautiful system.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: So my ticket test is simple.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Does this look exciting?
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Do I want to experience it with an audience?
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Is the whole evening worth the effort?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: When those answers are yes, I'll find the outside pants.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I'll deal with the traffic.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I might even buy popcorn and pretend I didn't see the total.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: As a filmmaker, I want to make something people text a friend about.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: We need to see this.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: And that's the invitation Hollywood needs to earn.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: So my take is this the audience is making choices, and Hollywood has to earn those choices movie by movie.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: A famous actor can open the conversation, a giant budget, can buy attention.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Neither tells me by itself whether I'll have a good night.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Make me laugh, scare me, move me, give me something I want to talk about afterward.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: And tell me clearly why should I show up?
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Because your real competition might be another movie.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Or it might be me at home with a cappuccino and a blanket and absolutely no intention of finding my shoes.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Now I want your take.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: What's the last movie that felt worth the theater trip?
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And what makes you say I'll wait for streaming?
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Tell me in the comments below price, trailer, reviews, or are you outside pants also negotiating a reduced work week?
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Hollywood, I want to support you, but my couch has submitted a very competitive proposal and includes a free parking.
