- 0:06your impact in the world. I'm Steph Safra, your host.
- 0:09Let's explore the power of showing up with intention and
- 0:12energy each day. This is for those who seek to
- 0:15make life truly meaningful. Get ready for impact.
- 0:22Hello, team. Thank you for being here today.
- 0:25In this episode of the show, I want to talk about stagnation.
- 0:29Stagnation is the tendency for people to feel stuck or stalled,
- 0:34maybe wait to take action in their life, feel like things
- 0:38aren't progressing for them. And this is a big one for so
- 0:42many people. I bet you can feel what
- 0:45stagnation feels like in your own life.
- 0:47I'm sure you've experienced it before, I know I definitely
- 0:50have. In Chinese medicine, we talk
- 0:53about stagnation a lot. It's one of the root causes of
- 0:56health issues and symptoms for people in Chinese medicine.
- 1:00You can think of stagnation in a lot of different ways.
- 1:03You can have stagnation of blood where tissues aren't getting
- 1:06optimal blood flow and it can cause inflammation when things
- 1:10are stuck and not moving. You can have food stagnation and
- 1:14that can cause issues with digestion and bloating and acid
- 1:18reflux. You know, all kinds of digestive
- 1:21upset. You can have stagnation of
- 1:23phlegm in Chinese medicine and that would show up as things
- 1:27like cysts or tumors or masses. You can also have stagnation of
- 1:33chi, which is oxygen tissues aren't getting enough nutrient
- 1:37rich, oxygen rich blood flow to them.
- 1:40And so we think about this in a lot of different ways.
- 1:44We talked about stagnation ad nauseam in Graduate School
- 1:47because it's such a powerful underlying root cause of disease
- 1:51for people. And so I think about it a lot
- 1:54from a health perspective, but I never realized I'd be thinking
- 1:57about it so much in terms of a coaching perspective.
- 2:00And that's what I want to address today, this tendency for
- 2:04people to be stagnant in their life, however this looks, and it
- 2:08can look a million different ways, we can be stagnant in our
- 2:12relationships. Maybe we're staying too long in
- 2:15a relationship that we know isn't right for us, or we're
- 2:17staying in circumstances that don't serve us.
- 2:20Maybe we're not having our needs met or we're not communicating
- 2:23well with our partner. Maybe we're staying in abusive
- 2:26or toxic relationships that really are just not healthy.
- 2:30We can have stagnation in our finances where we're not growing
- 2:35the way we want. We're not managing our money
- 2:37well. We're constantly stressed or
- 2:39worried about money. We aren't building a future for
- 2:42ourselves. We can be stagnant in our drive
- 2:46and our motivation. We just drag our feet on things
- 2:50and we don't take action. We put off important projects.
- 2:53We don't take the risks that we know we need to take.
- 2:57And of course, we can be stagnant in our health where
- 3:00we're just not taking great care of ourselves.
- 3:01We're not building positive habits to help us have good
- 3:04energy. This is a huge one for people,
- 3:07and it's really one of the most obvious ones because people can
- 3:10feel stagnation in their bodies and they can feel that what
- 3:14they're doing is not serving their health.
- 3:17And the reason that I bring this topic up is because it's one of
- 3:20the top complaints for people. Stagnation feels bad.
- 3:25Nobody wants to be stuck in their life.
- 3:27It's one of the things that drives people to coaching,
- 3:30probably one of the biggest things.
- 3:31It drives people to therapy and other modalities as well, of
- 3:34course. But it's because stagnation and
- 3:38stuckness is so uncomfortable for people.
- 3:40It sucks. It's such a big pain point and
- 3:44that's why it's one of the biggest struggles and complaints
- 3:47in our lives. When I think about stagnation
- 3:52and times of stuckness in my own life, I can look back and see
- 3:56why it was happening. I can see that I wasn't taking
- 3:59great care of myself. I'm particularly thinking of my
- 4:02late 20s. I can see I wasn't taking risks.
- 4:06I wasn't taking the action that I know I needed to.
- 4:10I had some friendships that they weren't really serving me.
- 4:13I was probably partying too much.
- 4:16I wasn't really following through on the drive that I
- 4:19needed to have to create success in my business.
- 4:23And as a result of that, I was having what I would call the
- 4:27same six months over and over again.
- 4:30And what I mean by that is there's a couple periods of time
- 4:33in my life where I was in stagnation for a while.
- 4:38And the way that I knew that I was is because I would feel like
- 4:41I was repeating the same months over and over again.
- 4:45And when I looked back on my past, I would say, wow, I just
- 4:49lived a year that was really similar to the year I lived
- 4:52before. And I'm not generally that happy
- 4:55with it. And this is something that I
- 4:58talked to my clients about. Now we talk about not wanting to
- 5:02have the same six months over and over again because you see
- 5:07it all the time in people. People want things to change
- 5:11often they want positive change. They want improvement.
- 5:15They always say I want to get to the next level.
- 5:18Maybe it's I want to lose weight and get healthy.
- 5:20I want to improve my finances. I want to start that business.
- 5:24I want to improve my marriage, but they don't take any action.
- 5:29They don't reach out for help, They don't try anything
- 5:32different to get a different result.
- 5:34And so the impact of that is they repeat the same pattern
- 5:37over and over again. And it looks like you're having
- 5:39the same type of six months again and again.
- 5:43And so then all of a sudden, years have gone by in your life
- 5:48and not much has changed. I have a client that I work with
- 5:52now who's absolutely killing it in his business.
- 5:55But when I initially started talking to him about the
- 5:58coaching process, he was vividly describing how his life was just
- 6:03repeating the same patterns over and over.
- 6:06He would get motivated and then his business would do great for
- 6:09a while. He'd work really hard and then
- 6:11he'd lose his motivation and he'd lose interest and it would
- 6:14reflect in his pipeline. He wouldn't have as many leads
- 6:17and he wouldn't make as much money.
- 6:19He would work on himself. He'd get fired up to do some
- 6:22personal growth. And then ultimately, he'd get
- 6:25frustrated by something in his home life or his marriage or
- 6:28with his kids or whatever. And he would go back to the way
- 6:31things were. And I remember in this
- 6:33conversation, I asked him, does it feel like you're on a hamster
- 6:37wheel? Like you're repeating the same
- 6:39things? And he's like, Oh my God, yes.
- 6:41I'm in a cycle of stuckness. He could say it.
- 6:44I'm in a cycle of stuckness and I can't seem to get out of it.
- 6:48And right then we had the conversation about what would
- 6:50happen if he didn't change something and how his next six
- 6:53months would look exactly like the six months before.
- 6:57And it terrified him because he knew that it was true.
- 7:00He knew that that's what he had been living the previous four or
- 7:04five years. And that's stuckness.
- 7:06It is painful, it sucks. Here's a very uncomfortable
- 7:11truth that I have lived myself. If you don't move out of
- 7:15stagnation, the same patterns will repeat.
- 7:18Now, just to be clear, I'm not talking about those periods of
- 7:21time where you're in limbo or you're working to try to figure
- 7:25something out. Sometimes we have to go through
- 7:27a period of time where we might feel stuck, but it's really the
- 7:31dust settling from something. Maybe you had an old pattern
- 7:35break apart. You had a big transition in your
- 7:37life, Maybe something major happened.
- 7:40Those are appropriate periods of stuckness and what might feel
- 7:45like stagnation. You don't have to have forward
- 7:48motion in every single day of your life.
- 7:50That's not what I'm saying. We can make a distinction here,
- 7:54and the distinction is those periods of time don't typically
- 7:58last for years. If you are in a transition, if
- 8:01you're an appropriate feeling of stuckness, it doesn't typically
- 8:06last for years. Those are usually temporary and
- 8:09transient. Maybe they last for a few
- 8:11months, maybe a year, but not much longer than that.
- 8:14It's not a long term thing. What I'm talking about is true
- 8:18stagnation, which can last from two to five years.
- 8:23It's a long term thing. It's a pattern that you are
- 8:26repeating and people are typically aware of it.
- 8:29And that is the stuff that kills our dreams.
- 8:31That's the stuff that holds us back from getting a life we
- 8:33want, the life that we know we have the potential to create,
- 8:36and we're not doing it. We have to get into some type of
- 8:40action to get out of our stagnation when it's gone on too
- 8:43long. And that action can look a lot
- 8:45of different ways. It can be energetic, physical,
- 8:48mental, emotional. It can be getting some of your
- 8:51bad habits under control. It can be taking some risks and
- 8:55making some informed decisions. It can be having hard
- 8:58conversations. That's definitely been me at
- 9:01times in my life. It can be hiring outside help
- 9:05like providers or coaches or consultants.
- 9:09It can be going to therapy or getting EMDR.
- 9:12There's so many different ways this can look, and that's not
- 9:14the point. The point is we have to create
- 9:17momentum for ourselves in order to break the pattern of
- 9:20stagnation. Nobody wants to repeat the same
- 9:23six months over and over again. One of our deep core human needs
- 9:28is growth in growth in so many different ways.
- 9:32Stagnation is the enemy of growth team, and I know you've
- 9:35felt that before. So my challenge to you this week
- 9:39is to think about, are there areas in my life where I am in
- 9:42true stagnation? The type of stuckness that has
- 9:46lasted for years where I feel like I've been repeating the
- 9:50same six months of my life over and over again?
- 9:53Do those things exist in my life?
- 9:55And if so, how can I create some momentum and get into some
- 9:59action around those things? Try to differentiate between
- 10:04true stagnation and just transition, being in a place of
- 10:09stuckness or limbo or confusion that is temporary and often as a
- 10:13result of something that could be positive, like an old pattern
- 10:18breaking apart or looking at life with a new perspective, or
- 10:23maybe just leaving some stuff that didn't serve you.
- 10:26All of that stuff is good and positive and powerful, and it
- 10:29can feel a little bit like stuckness and stagnation, but
- 10:33it's good for us in the end. There's usually some work going
- 10:36on and some timing that has to come together in those moments
- 10:40that maybe we can't see. I'm talking about true
- 10:43stagnation here. If you have those areas in your
- 10:46life where you are feeling that stuckness, let's get into some
- 10:50action around it. So I hope that this has spurred
- 10:53on some insights. I hope it has you thinking about
- 10:55how to create some momentum and action in your life.
- 10:57Let's get moving because remember that movement is what
- 11:01creates the impact and the ripple effects in our community,
- 11:04in our lives, for our people and for ourselves.
- 11:07That's how we up regulate. That's how we get to the next
- 11:10level. So thank you for being here and
- 11:12for listening. Thinking about getting out of
- 11:15stagnation today. And as always, thank you for
