- 0:00SPEAKER_00: As we begin this morning, I want to name something important, okay?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: During World War II,
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: 10% of young brethren men served in civil public service,
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: so they didn't go to that war.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: 10% served in non-combatant roles in the military, okay?
- 0:27And 80% of young Church of the Brethren men served in active
- 0:35combat roles in that war.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: And since then,
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: many of our young men have served in other wars,
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Korea,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Vietnam,
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: the Gulf War,
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Afghanistan.
- 0:52And some who made those choices may and probably are with us
- 0:58here this morning.
- 0:59Some of us who are here this morning love or grieve those who
- 1:05did participate in those wars.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Hear this clearly, please.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: This message is not about condemning anyone.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Those choices that were made were made,
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: in my opinion,
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: thoughtfully,
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: with courage,
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: and with conviction.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: They were made with sacrifice in difficult times.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So this morning we recognize that as we seek Jesus' way for our time.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: What I hope to do today is simple.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Just...
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: open up what Jesus seemed to be saying and doing in his lifetime,
- 1:58and asking the question how his example shapes the choices that
- 2:04we make today.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Friends, injustices and evil feel unending in our world.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Retaliation seems justified.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Violence feels inevitable.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Would you agree?
- 2:26However,
- 2:27Jesus offers a better way to address evil that counters our
- 2:34instincts.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Empire says this, peace is forged and maintained through force and war.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Is that true?
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And if it is true, does war achieve what God cannot?
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Can violence do what Jesus' love is unable to achieve?
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: What does it mean if we claim that?
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: What does it do inside of our souls?
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Let those questions sink in for a moment.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: What if God is calling us to refuse warring ways now?
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Not just out there,
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: but right here in our homes,
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: in our work teams,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: in our schools,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: in our churches,
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: in our hearts.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: What if peacemaking became our family name?
- 3:52Blessed are the peacemakers,
- 3:54Jesus says,
- 3:55for they will be called children of God.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Not peace wishers, but peacemakers.
- 4:05And then he goes on to say,
- 4:06you have heard,
- 4:06blah,
- 4:07blah,
- 4:07blah,
- 4:08but I say to you.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And Jesus authoritatively breaks the old cycles of payback.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: for the people.
- 4:18He invites a new imagination,
- 4:20a new articulation,
- 4:22a new manifestation of love in the world.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Our governments have told us the only way to peace is through war.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: But Jesus shows another way.
- 4:38It is costly,
- 4:41it is creative,
- 4:42it is brave,
- 4:43and it is,
- 4:44above all,
- 4:45self-sacrificing.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: He turns retaliation into reconciliation.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Theologian Eugene Boring puts it this way.
- 4:57Violence is a self-destructive and futile,
- 5:03resulting only in a vicious spiral of violence.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: The way of the kingdom of God is to absorb evil rather than inflict it.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: And bring the spiral finally to an end.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: In the scriptures that we read this morning in Gethsemane,
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: when the disciple draws a sword and cuts an ear,
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Jesus stopped the spiral.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: He said, put the sword back in its place.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: For all who draw the sword will die by the sword.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: The spiral.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Isaiah proclaimed a prophetic imagination.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: They shall beat their swords into plowshares.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Neither shall they learn war anymore.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: On our farm, steel works soil as it does on many of your farms.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: On mine, a no-till plow gently opens the ground so that seeds can grow.
- 6:14Imagine anger forged into tools that feed rather than ones that
- 6:22create famine.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Our brethren family has said plainly,
- 6:28we cannot imagine Jesus targeting a missile to destroy those
- 6:37for whom he died.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: and we bear his name.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: While I was at NOAC, I saw Frank Ramirez buy this bumper sticker.
- 6:54It says,
- 6:55when Jesus said,
- 6:56love your enemies,
- 6:58I think he probably meant don't kill them.
- 7:07I think you know this,
- 7:08every war,
- 7:09every war claims to be the war that ends all wars.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: And as I was at Noack,
- 7:17I was speaking to quite a lot of older men who said that's what
- 7:22they heard.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: And that's why they did what they did, right?
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Yet they also said,
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: War just breeds war and contempt just breeds contempt.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Only love stops the spiral.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Peacemaking love isn't passive.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: It shelters the vulnerable and it tells the truth.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: It refuses to dehumanize and demonize the others.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: So what do we do?
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: I was a GM at Ameria.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: I bring this up a lot.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: But I learned a lot of really interesting things.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: And one of the things that they trained me in was service recovery.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Seek first to understand.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: They taught me.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Listen fully.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Apologize sincerely.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: And then make it right.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: That's conflict, de-escalation, peacemaking, Marriott style.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: You can do the same at your place of work.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: At home, we can disagree without contempt.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: We can correct without shaming.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Students,
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: as you're going to school,
- 9:02peacemaking can be as simple as making room at the lunch table
- 9:08for those who feel
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: lonely.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Romans 12,
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: 18 proclaims,
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: If it is possible,
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: which it is,
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: so far as it depends on you,
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: which it does,
- 9:27Live peacefully with all which we can by the power and the
- 9:36presence of Jesus Christ
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: in our lives.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: So, here's a daily prayer for us.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Lord, disarm me first.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: And then...
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: Teach my hands to reforge swords into plowshares.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: Violence into restoration.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: So work on these things this week, if you don't mind.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: Seek first to understand.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Listen fully.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Apologize sincerely.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: And then...
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: make it right.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Go that extra mile that Jesus invites us to go.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: If you're wondering,
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: and I think it's understandable to wonder this,
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: whether this peace approach of Jesus works,
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: well,
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: we can look at Jesus and
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: Refusing the sword didn't stop death from coming for Jesus.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: But it did stop death from winning.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: It stopped the spiraling.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: And that is the invitation this morning.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Church, this is our calling.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Refuse the wars of words and grudges, of consumption and control.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Instead, pursue the costly peace of Christ.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Let's break the spiraling with love.
