Transcript
- 0:00Hello, there. It's time for most things
- 0:02Kenobi. Hi everyone, welcome to another
- 0:17episode of most things Kenobi. A podcast about Obi-Wan Kenobi
- 0:21and all things Star Wars. I'm your host Lauren, and I'm
- 0:24your host Leanne and this week, we're going back to our favorite
- 0:30character of all time. Obi-Wan Kenobi.
- 0:33Yes, it's time to visit the motherland.
- 0:39He that is our motherland. Yeah, Earth had a deal and oh
- 0:45Oh, that's good. That's real good.
- 0:50Daddy, land me in jail this week.
- 0:56We're talking about OB wood and Mall.
- 0:59The shitshow of a relationship that we absolutely love which I
- 1:03think I called his relationship with Quinlan a shitshow.
- 1:07Also maybe he's just a shitshow care.
- 1:10Well, look at his relationship with Anakin shit, show Satine.
- 1:15Shit show. Exactly.
- 1:18We're gonna talk a lot about Satine to because you can't talk
- 1:21about these two without Satine. Yeah there's a lot of overlap
- 1:27there. There is.
- 1:29When I was kind of getting my thoughts together for this
- 1:31episode. I realized that these two have
- 1:35more in common than they do. Like opposed to their opposites,
- 1:40they have plenty of opposites, very obvious opposites.
- 1:44Right? But they have a lot in common
- 1:46like themes, mmm situations, you know, the theme of loss, you the
- 1:52theme of struggle, the theme of Abandonment or lonesomeness or
- 1:58isolation and they're they're like the two sides of a coin,
- 2:02right? Where the center is the same but
- 2:04their choices are what? Make them?
- 2:07Yes, yes, different. And yeah and I well, okay, so
- 2:12we're doing this in two parts. Parts.
- 2:14The first part is phantom menace up until Revival and Clone Wars,
- 2:21right? And then part two of this series
- 2:23is going to be from revival, the way to the end of the well
- 2:25Rebels, basically, but what you were just saying, is something I
- 2:30talk about, which we can talk about the next episode in part
- 2:332, but in the Lawless, the cinematography actually shows
- 2:37Obi-Wan. And while the same way, it was
- 2:40really cool. I did a breakdown of it on my
- 2:42blog and It's almost spooky, it's really cool and it's very
- 2:47deliberate. So you're totally right.
- 2:49That they are weirdly similar. Even though you would not notice
- 2:53that right off the bat, I'm interested to hear about this,
- 2:58the cinematography, you always bring the goods on the
- 3:00cinematography side. Let me ask you this question
- 3:06first, before we can go any further.
- 3:10Are you a fan or were you a fan of bringing Darth Maul back
- 3:16after Phantom Menace? Hmm, that's an interesting
- 3:20question actually, that's why I asked.
- 3:24I would say no. And yes, and here's why no?
- 3:28Because it seemed to undermine The Phantom Menace.
- 3:32Correct. Like Obi-Wan was a Padawan who
- 3:36defeated a Sith. As I paddle out, like, it was a
- 3:40huge herd of deal. Yeah.
- 3:42Yeah, and it's the first Sith in a thousand years was killed by a
- 3:46Padawan Obi-Wan. Kenobi was a huge fucking deal
- 3:48and it was indicative of him as a Jedi, and then, actually, he's
- 3:54not dead. He's living in a trash pile.
- 3:58Yeah. And they bring him that, like I
- 4:00was just in the way that stars has done this over and over.
- 4:05Well, that's what I wanted to say.
- 4:07It's it's become a Theme. Now it has an I find it
- 4:12extremely irritating honestly, because they make our heroes and
- 4:16then they cut them off at the knees.
- 4:19And I so I find that really frustrating Point.
- 4:24Poor choice of words, poor, poor choice of words because I was
- 4:28gonna bring up the undermining of Darth Vader that for throwing
- 4:33Sidious overweight, you know, literally cut off at the knees,
- 4:37small cut off at the hips. So I feel the same way about,
- 4:42you know, somehow Palpatine has returned.
- 4:45Yeah, yeah, right. So how Palpatine return?
- 4:49For fuck's sake. Yeah.
- 4:51I mean that totally undermined like the sacrifice that Vader
- 4:55made for his son and that Luke made for Vader or his dad.
- 5:01It was a beautiful thing and so I kind of felt the same way that
- 5:05you were saying it undermined Obi-Wan's will even Qui-Gon is
- 5:09death. Yeah absolutely because Obi-Wan
- 5:12sought that. I don't want to say Revenge but
- 5:18I mean there were moments of like where he was angry and he
- 5:20lost himself but yeah, thought the finality of it.
- 5:25And then was able to have his final moments with Qui-Gon
- 5:28thereafter, but but then what became of Mall story is
- 5:33interesting enough and it really added a lot of layers to Obi-Wan
- 5:36as well to his character as a result.
- 5:39Yeah, absolutely. And I love everything about how
- 5:43they brought him back. And obviously, Sam Witwer is
- 5:47just a fucking genius about it and do the yes.
- 5:50We love him. Like everything that mall did
- 5:53after that, especially like this.
- 5:55Season seven stuff which we'll talk about probably the next
- 5:57episode. Like it's fucking good.
- 6:01Like it's really fucking good, but I still get annoyed.
- 6:04There's even a part in Revenge where Obi-Wan is in the council
- 6:09chamber or not. Well, I guess they're in like a
- 6:11briefing room and he finds out mall is still alive and Maize
- 6:17the Windows. Like this is far too important
- 6:20to send Obi-Wan alone. There's a bitch he defeated Him
- 6:25is a child, like he can do it now.
- 6:29He's a Jedi master. Now, why can't you do it now?
- 6:32But he could do it when he was a Padawan like, fuck off Windows a
- 6:37dick. Fuck window him and
- 6:43ki-adi-mundi. Need to go have a damp towel
- 6:47session because that's what they are.
- 6:48They're wet Rags. The damp towels.
- 7:03I'm overheating now laughing so hard.
- 7:06It is a lovely sweater. It's very cozy.
- 7:12That's true. Fucks true right but you're
- 7:17right though they don't I mean come on Obi-Wan is capable.
- 7:22As we've seen time and time again.
- 7:25Yeah. Fuck out of here.
- 7:27Yeah. Granted.
- 7:29When do it doesn't of being right?
- 7:32But it is the mind that we're not here to, I mean.
- 7:39Yeah. So I don't know.
- 7:41The thing that I love about Obi-Wan Amal is that mall?
- 7:47Always brings anger out of 0, b, 1 and a.
- 7:50He always Really struggles to get back to a center and
- 7:55remember don't know like don't fight with passion and so when I
- 8:01was making my notes I was kind of that was like the main theme.
- 8:05I kept coming back to is that in Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan is
- 8:10standing behind the ratio and it gives a little lip curl.
- 8:12And that's how we know he's actually angry and he fights
- 8:16with anger and passion and it's not until he sits and Mall gets
- 8:20the better of him until He centers himself comes back to
- 8:25himself and then he is able to defeat mall and that happens
- 8:28again, two more times in the episodes of we're talking about
- 8:34revenge. It's the only time own is like
- 8:38very visibly angry and it looks good on him.
- 8:44It's great. I've no complaints but it's that
- 8:51that Especially when they're up and like the Gantry and yeah,
- 8:55whilst he's like, yeah, he's taunting him taunts him thinking
- 9:00like it's not teasing because well maybe I'll be one Nanny, he
- 9:12taunts him about Qui-Gon and the look on everyone's face is the
- 9:18only time you ever really see rage.
- 9:20And this is Ass kicked. It's like every time he leads
- 9:25with anger he loses and has to retreat or has to like recenter
- 9:30himself or lose his footing. It's pretty interesting and then
- 9:34in part two next week we'll talk about how that changes.
- 9:38Yeah. I'm all obviously knows his only
- 9:41chance with Obi-Wan is using emotion as a weapon because
- 9:46yeah. He has all of those crutches
- 9:50like Satine. Saigon, even Anakin, you know,
- 9:54all of these things that he has to, he can continually remind
- 9:58Obi-Wan of to get them in a more vulnerable space.
- 10:01Because I mean, you're not going to win the fight unless you
- 10:06disarm him, not by weapon, but by mental mental weapon.
- 10:13Yeah, I mean, yes. It's There is no other character
- 10:18that does that Obi-Wan not even Vader.
- 10:21Hmm, Vader, makes him. I mean, as we've seen in the
- 10:24Kenobi series, clearly, he's like unsettled in that first
- 10:29duel that they have, and he gets his ass handed to him, literally
- 10:33burnt. Yes.
- 10:36But don't you think it's easier for him to separate it because
- 10:39Vader and Anakin are so vastly different that he can treat it
- 10:43as two different entities. And well, I would argue that.
- 10:46that Vader isn't using emotional taunting necessarily, like
- 10:51that's not the reason that Obi-Wan loses that duel, that
- 10:54is, it's a mixture of fear instead of anger and He's a bit
- 11:04Rusty. Yeah well and he's confronting a
- 11:08past. He tried to completely block
- 11:11out. Yeah, Mall is there as a
- 11:14constant reminder. So he has to face it, you know.
- 11:17And when he does face it with Vader, that's when he's able to
- 11:20overcome it. It's almost like, well, it's a
- 11:23good lesson for all of us. Yeah, confront the thing up
- 11:27running. Yes, yes, stop running.
- 11:31Yeah. I mean Darth Maul is driven from
- 11:35day one. I mean, from his what in the son
- 11:39of dathomir comic. Hmm.
- 11:42It like he's resentful right off the bat resentful of the
- 11:46nightsisters resentful of you know the Jedi not acknowledging.
- 11:50The he has for sensibility their sensitivity.
- 11:53Scuse me, you know. And he's just like constantly
- 11:56angry and he builds off that and that's how he ends up Surviving.
- 11:59You know when they do bring mom back.
- 12:01Yeah, really literally yeah you just as fueled by constant anger
- 12:08and resentment. And I don't see any glimmer of
- 12:12any anything until we get to Rebels which we'll talk about
- 12:17next week, right? Yeah.
- 12:21I was thinking about that too because how exhausting it
- 12:24seriously? It's amazing that he uses it to
- 12:26strengthen himself because it seems so emotionally draining to
- 12:32be that upset all the time. And I was thinking about revenge
- 12:36which, you know, is my favorite episode.
- 12:38Oh yeah, line. Are literally Mall stays alive
- 12:44with his hatred of 0. B 1 which is crazy.
- 12:49But one person's hatred. Like you could hate one person
- 12:53so much that you survive. Like I don't even know what 15
- 12:56years or something like that. Yeah in a trash pile and become
- 13:00a spider. Yeah.
- 13:02What was an excellent use of engineering.
- 13:06Really? He made himself useful and it
- 13:10was an upcycling, he up cycled and helped self and others.
- 13:18But no, imagine the amount of fucking rage.
- 13:21Oh my gosh, seriously and like, the the line where he says, I
- 13:25will keep you alive, like I will make you feel every single cut
- 13:30like that's dark. I angry must a person be to
- 13:34like, take that. Kind of pleasure in hurting
- 13:37another person. It's like the only thing he
- 13:39lives for he's so obsessed with Obi-Wan but literally every time
- 13:45you seem all he's doing something about trying to get
- 13:48back at Obi-Wan even though open one might not even be in the
- 13:51episode. It's crazy.
- 13:54Apparently there's a lot more elaboration on the beginnings of
- 14:00malls, hatred in the Queen's Peril as well.
- 14:05Really, there's inklings of, he's resentful of the
- 14:10nightsisters because his mother is mother talzin.
- 14:15Like as actual mother. Well she birthed all of that
- 14:19created them, birthed them, I guess.
- 14:23OK interesting. She's such an interesting
- 14:25character. She yeah and what she paid all
- 14:28the attention, all of her attention to the nightsisters.
- 14:31So he was pissed about that. Mmm, then he felt abandoned by
- 14:35the Jedi who left him on dathomir, despite him having for
- 14:41sensitivity. Really?
- 14:43I didn't know that they even knew he existed.
- 14:45Yeah this is all this is all queens, Peril stuff.
- 14:49Interesting should read this book.
- 14:51I didn't read it. I just have notes in like trying
- 14:56to figure out, where did it all start from all?
- 14:58Well, it's just started right off the bat.
- 15:02I mean he just I guess if that's all, you know.
- 15:05Yeah. We always mention in previous
- 15:10you know discussions and episodes and stuff about what a
- 15:13mastermind Darth Maul is he's calculated, he's intelligent,
- 15:18he's patient obviously. Yeah, you know yeah I don't know
- 15:24if I get a lived in a trash pile for 10 years with all that anger
- 15:27and no way out. Nope, but he's got all the
- 15:34makings of a fantastic. He's right up there with Sidious
- 15:38right city has plays the long game.
- 15:41Yeah, but mall was so hyper focused and I also noticed that
- 15:47he's very similar to a serial killer because he keeps
- 15:51mementos. And he has, you know, how some
- 15:55serial killers keep things, and we'll talk about it more in the
- 15:57next episode, especially when it comes to Satine, but like he's
- 16:01got that psychopathy. That's necessary to be hyper
- 16:05focused. Really intelligent.
- 16:08You know, a lot of serial killers are very intelligent
- 16:11individuals. But yeah, they only use it for
- 16:14like one thing and it's all selfish and terrible.
- 16:17And that's exactly what Darth Maul is.
- 16:20So that's so true, he's fucking crazy.
- 16:24Well, unlike sociopaths can like, blend into society, but
- 16:28Psychopaths usually can't and, like malls, not blend in
- 16:32anywhere. No, not by looks not by
- 16:35attitude. I mean you put him up against
- 16:38his brother sauvage. Yeah.
- 16:41And they're they're vastly different and you know kind of
- 16:46cut from a similar cloth, maybe not quite, you know, sauvage had
- 16:52that. Oh brother, I'll help you
- 16:54brother. I respect you brother and Darth
- 16:56Maul was like, fuck you. I don't care if you're my
- 16:58brother or not get the fuck out my way.
- 17:00You're going to help me or get out of my way you know and I
- 17:03find that interesting because how can one be so Obsessed with
- 17:08just one person. Like, what does that come from?
- 17:12Yeah, yet, because it's not, that Obi-Wan is not the only
- 17:17person to ever wronged him, but I guess it was the fact that it
- 17:21took him off of his pedestal, he lost all of his momentum, not to
- 17:26mention his lower half of his body.
- 17:29And like when he was revived and like his mind was reset by
- 17:34mother talzin. Yeah.
- 17:36He He feels the Clone Wars and says that it started without me,
- 17:41like, he wanted to be part of that chaos and he lost his
- 17:44position as The Apprentice to Sidious.
- 17:47And his, I'm surely, he would have gained kind of like, how
- 17:53the Vikings, you know, in war their status comes from their
- 17:58conquering, and their pillaging, and basically, the treasure.
- 18:03If you could go and Conquer a land, you'd become more
- 18:06powerful. and I'm sure that's kind of how mall would have been
- 18:10as well, but he lost all of that ultimately, it might have even
- 18:13saved his life, because if he had remained, Sidious has
- 18:16Apprentice It's never going to end well.
- 18:20Like that, it's kind of the Sith way to be pitted against your
- 18:25own Master. You're an apprentice, they're
- 18:27constantly testing each other to see who's going to take power.
- 18:31And the fact that Sidious thought he was dead, gave him
- 18:35more latitude to actually follow his obsession with ob would
- 18:39where he wouldn't have been able to do that.
- 18:41He God knows what city is what I had him doing anyway, but I
- 18:46would argue that I think that that Darth Maul would have been
- 18:49tossed aside. Eventually look at what Sidious
- 18:52did with Dooku and pitted Anakin against him to one-up and to,
- 18:56like, build Anakin upright to start that, you know, to carry
- 18:59that on. I have a feeling that would have
- 19:01ended up being mall and Anakin would have had to do away with
- 19:05Mall. Absolutely, everyone's just a
- 19:08pawn to be moved. Insidious is game Mall.
- 19:11Had a sense though that Anakin was part of the master plan?
- 19:16Yes, yes. So Interesting that mall
- 19:20understood that but Dooku. Yeah, didn't really man.
- 19:25It just it just speaks to how manipulative Sidious is always
- 19:30so good at it. Picking and choosing, who gets
- 19:33what information? I don't know how the man kept it
- 19:35all straight, in his own head of who, knew what when, and where
- 19:39he had that flow chart, and a pack of cigarettes, like, from
- 19:43that from the, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia that Meme where
- 19:46he's pointing at the wall, with all the The strings and the
- 19:48lines and he's like, yes, yes, that's how was serious at the
- 19:51back room at the, at the fucking Senate.
- 19:55It's so true chain-smoking. Poring over his notes.
- 20:03So maybe, you know this, I don't know it because I have the comic
- 20:06book about. I haven't read it yet after.
- 20:09And this is maybe jumping ahead a little bit because after the
- 20:12Lawless, you know, how city of shows up at the end of the
- 20:14Lawless and take small, what happens to him and leave.
- 20:18The wood all comes back. He makes reference.
- 20:20That is it pre Vizsla? Who helps him Escape like oh
- 20:26you're right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:28Because his obsession with Mandalore is also a thing.
- 20:32So not just the teen but like, Mandalore as a whole.
- 20:35Yeah, maybe I'm getting, I'm getting, I'm getting that mixed
- 20:40up because he killed previous love right before the Lawless.
- 20:43So, it wasn't previous Lihue, freedom.
- 20:46But so somebody in the mandalorians freed him and
- 20:50that's how we ended up on Mandalore.
- 20:54In season seven. So like I don't know the stuff
- 20:57that happened in between there like what was city is doing to
- 21:00him. When does solo take place in all
- 21:02of this? Because he's running that damn
- 21:05ring. That Kira was a part of that.
- 21:08We see at the end of solo. Oh my God.
- 21:10You're right. That's later though.
- 21:13That's that's after Clone Wars. Yeah, we need to.
- 21:17We need to make like a timeline of malls life.
- 21:21You're damn right? We need to pull a Sidious.
- 21:25Well, being seriously. Because he's his he's that bad
- 21:29penny that keeps showing up, but it's somebody, was it.
- 21:32You who said this? Oh, no, I think it was on the
- 21:35other day. I do.
- 21:36Remember the rare drop show. They were saying that saw
- 21:40gerrera keeps popping up all over the place.
- 21:42It's like how and why, but it always kind of makes sense.
- 21:45Yeah, mall is the same as a key keeps popping up.
- 21:49I don't know how or why, but it always makes the plot better.
- 21:53It Drew, and they are to clone war relics that somehow made it
- 21:59through to a key point in time. Oh man, to the Rebellion.
- 22:04So yeah, yeah, Mall. Keep you hopping up.
- 22:08I love mall like his little spikes.
- 22:13Is it him? Who has one that's broken off?
- 22:16Or is it sauvage? Abreast sauvage?
- 22:18Okay, sauvage has one. Do you think that hurt?
- 22:22I imagine so well, I don't know. I don't like are they like
- 22:25antlers I was just going to say I don't want to say it's like an
- 22:29antler because I know that antlers the animals will
- 22:32actually like knock them off in the winter time I think isn't
- 22:35that when they do it but I do okay.
- 22:37Now I don't think so. Yeah, I think there's spikes are
- 22:41probably attached. I just feel bad that he has.
- 22:46That one wonky Spike. I feel bad for a sauvage in so
- 22:50many ways because what you Were saying earlier about he was used
- 22:54to, he was used, and he was like Hunger Games doing it, right?
- 22:59So he was being pitted against his brothers for.
- 23:04Yeah, Ventress is sake and then he chose he was trying to
- 23:09protect his brother who was like weaker and smaller.
- 23:13Yeah. And then he ends up killing him
- 23:15because she bewitches him. And he doesn't know the
- 23:18difference, and then he gets thrown out into this path.
- 23:22That was far worse that he probably imagined it was going
- 23:25to be when he was taking that burden on.
- 23:27Yeah, it was her. I don't I don't know how I feel
- 23:30about death and mirror as a whole It's a pretty fucked up
- 23:35story. It's interesting, but it's very
- 23:40what's the word just like incredibly brutal?
- 23:43It's like, Lord of the Flies on steroids.
- 23:46It's like the the nightsisters you know, I want to root for
- 23:53them because they're a band of women but they're also kind of
- 23:57terrible but then there's some that aren't and you know, I just
- 24:04It's got all that weird colored smoke on the planet.
- 24:08Not good for if you have asthma. No, I and shit mother talzin has
- 24:13a giant like Calves Earnest castle and it's very reminiscent
- 24:18of that. The bad character.
- 24:24You know, that bad character. She's a Disney witch.
- 24:27She has the black horns. Oh, Melissa.
- 24:30Maleficent Maleficent. Yeah, she gives me, Maleficent
- 24:33Vibes. Isn't that her name Maleficent?
- 24:36Yeah, Maleficent yeah okay. I feel like when I'm saying it
- 24:40doesn't feel right in my mouth. But no, that's not, that's her.
- 24:43Yeah, she's got you know just all the mother talzin is missing
- 24:48is a wall of thorns. Seems like death of me would be
- 24:52the place for Thorns because they got him growing out of
- 24:54their heads. So Revival is a really
- 24:58interesting exchange their right.
- 25:00So they've interacted during Phantom Menace and now they've
- 25:04interacted during revenge and every time Obi-Wan and Mall,
- 25:10cross paths, something terrible happens.
- 25:13Right? So like Qui-Gon does the first
- 25:15time? Obi-Wan almost dies during
- 25:19Revenge, true. Idea Galia dies during Revival
- 25:25tear, which that moment was so interesting to me.
- 25:29Because during that whole duel between Obi-Wan and mall and
- 25:33idea Gaya and sauvage, only one is goteng Mall into attacking
- 25:39him. Hmm he's on the defensive but
- 25:42he's kind of like he does that little like, are you gonna fight
- 25:45me or not Little Mermaid with his hands?
- 25:47You know, I love that. But after mall or sauvage kills
- 25:53d'Italia Obi-Wan starts to attack, like he will, he gets
- 25:58his like crazed, look in his eye like he's gonna just fucking
- 26:01kill all these dead Sumerians and Mall stops.
- 26:05I'm just in time, but it was an interesting moment where he kind
- 26:08of like lost himself for a second.
- 26:12This man has suffered so much loss, and he always has to be
- 26:16there to witness it. He always ends up witnessing it.
- 26:19Yeah. Like from a point of view where
- 26:22he's not able to help or you know, and again, yeah, he's
- 26:26always it, he's held back, I know, right?
- 26:29It's, it's the worst kind, it's just awful.
- 26:36That's why it's funny. That you've seen that Meme.
- 26:38I'm sure of C3PO saying it's our lot in life.
- 26:42Life to suffer. And then they sure do like a
- 26:44picture of Luke. Yeah, yes.
- 26:47Yeah. That that just needs to be
- 26:48stamped on ovary ones. Forehead base Obi-Wan.
- 26:51Yeah. Oh God, I takes her lightsaber.
- 26:57Yeah. And James has performance.
- 26:59James Arnold Taylor performance. Win Han do hon.
- 27:02Ooh, Hondo is like where where's the other Jedi?
- 27:05And he says, she's she's dead. The it's one fucking word, not
- 27:10end. Like this sound in his voice is
- 27:12so the emotion is so beautiful but without like losing control
- 27:18but you can tell he really feels that loss and then the duel
- 27:22between him and while and it's about Jesus.
- 27:26Just like it. I think so good.
- 27:30I could watch that on repeat. I could to I never get tired of
- 27:35it. It's so detailed to like if you
- 27:38watch it over and over you'll see that there's like very
- 27:41specific choices that the animators made, I guess, the
- 27:46director made of how ob1 fights them and it's really fucking
- 27:50cool. And I just I don't know, man.
- 27:54I really feel like if he had fought them again in the Lawless
- 27:59he would have won. Hmm.
- 28:02Yeah but it was and we'll talk about this in the next episode
- 28:06as it being like kind of the first time he chooses not to
- 28:08fight. Yeah I know I know next week is
- 28:15going to be a good episode. Yeah because the the real feels
- 28:19come in. Yeah.
- 28:20And the real Twisted nastas of Darth Maul Comes.
- 28:23I mean yeah it's been pretty fucked up up until him up until
- 28:28this point but I feel like there's there's a separation
- 28:32here. It was Sidious has right-hand
- 28:36man. Darth Maul then he dies or gets
- 28:38cut in half whatever. Then he has time to go crazy
- 28:41loses mine and refocus himself and then he comes into his own
- 28:45strength through that this first half of the Clone Wars.
- 28:49And I think you really find where his I'll like his where
- 28:56his comfort zone is with torturing, hmm?
- 28:59You know he's like okay this is what I really like.
- 29:02This is how I'm really going to attack people and this is how
- 29:05I'm going to do it. He has that power that he didn't
- 29:08have as being, you know, The Apprentice to City ice or
- 29:12someone in a very mentally incapacitated State as he was
- 29:17following The Phantom Menace. Yeah, so I think when he gets to
- 29:20the point of the law Less. He is in full control of
- 29:25himself, his mind his power, all the content, all the things are
- 29:29there to make him, truly ruthless.
- 29:33Yeah, and he's no longer just trying to hurt right?
- 29:37One physically he's using a more like cerebral approach of How do
- 29:44I make you lose yourself the way?
- 29:45I yes myself. Yeah, it's no longer just how
- 29:49many scars can I cause it's how deep can I cut?
- 29:52And it's like yeah that's the real frightening part of anyone
- 29:58who has that, you know. Yeah.
- 30:00For sure it I know this is might sound like a bit of a stretch
- 30:04but it really reminds me of the killing joke from Batman.
- 30:08And the whole idea of that story is the Joker is trying to prove
- 30:12to Batman that are Takes is one bad day for someone to turn into
- 30:15the Joker. And, of course, Batman is trying
- 30:19to argue that, that's not actually true and it's, it's
- 30:23kind of similar here that it's, like, mall is hoping that
- 30:27putting this pressure on Obi-Wan using Satine is going to make.
- 30:32You just as bad as me, see, you're no different than me.
- 30:35And like the worst way to hurt you is to make you lose, who you
- 30:40are and it doesn't happen. It doesn't.
- 30:43Doesn't work and that's, oh, it's so good.
- 30:47I know I can't wait to talk about it next week.
- 30:49It's going to be awesome. It's why Obi-Wan is so fucking
- 30:53amazing? What's it like in parallel with
- 30:56what, how you were, describing malls, Arc up to this point.
- 31:00What we're talking about in this episode, the same with Obi-Wan,
- 31:03it's like, he had this idea of who he was going to be, he's a
- 31:07Padawan with a teacher and then all of that changed like the
- 31:11battle at the seed, was kind of like this.
- 31:13Chrome point for him, that changed his path into something
- 31:17especially with like Anakin and everything.
- 31:19He was like, Destiny had control of him after that and he was
- 31:23kind of just going on a whole different path but that moment
- 31:26also changed the way. He fought it changed the way he
- 31:30realized. Like, how you have to keep
- 31:31control of yourself in an emotional battle.
- 31:35He learned that really young at a very young age after watching
- 31:39Qui-Gon die and he almost lost control and then came back under
- 31:42control. And you see every time he
- 31:44interacts with Mall up until this point in Revival that all
- 31:48the one kind of loses control for a bit when he's with wall,
- 31:52and you can see that he learns something from that.
- 31:57And next week, we'll talk about how like after this boat OB but
- 32:00I'm all have different approaches when they interact
- 32:03with each other and it's really amazing, actually.
- 32:08Yeah, these two are obviously tied together from start.
- 32:13To finish their paths are one that cross and re-cross cross
- 32:17again. And like you said, destiny fate
- 32:20that sort of thing. The force may be working in a
- 32:22once favored or not his favor but just their guiding.
- 32:30It raises the question, you know, Force, are you there?
- 32:35It's me. Oh, we want, you know, it works
- 32:39in mysterious ways. It causes all this loss but it
- 32:42causes him to To turn into this amazing human and save so many
- 32:46more, you know it's this, right? Exactly like you see the The Arc
- 32:51of his life because we see his everything except basically, his
- 32:55first, I don't know what 12 years or even maybe, I don't
- 32:59know when Padawan takes place that book, but we only don't
- 33:02know, Obi-Wan is a baby. That's basically it.
- 33:04So we see all the rest of his life and to see where he starts
- 33:07to where he ends up pain causes Enlightenment.
- 33:12Oh, Like just a percent in in real life it does.
- 33:16So this is Buddhism 101. Exactly.
- 33:19He's one of the most enlightened beings by the end because he has
- 33:23endured so much but hasn't been destroyed by it.
- 33:26You know, that goddamn it is such a good character, he really
- 33:30is and it pisses me off even more because every time he
- 33:34thinks, okay, this will be the instance It doesn't happen, it
- 33:38doesn't work. God, I just love Obi-Wan.
- 33:42I did too. I love it and I love them all
- 33:44things. He's got him figured out and
- 33:46he's wrong every time, every time.
- 33:49It's so, it's okay. So to wrap it up, back to my
- 33:53original question, right? There's a reason why I asked it.
- 33:56Yeah, yes, it sucked that. The original cutting in half of
- 34:02mall was was undone. But look at the greatness that
- 34:06came because Cuz of it, right? Absolutely the, the character
- 34:10building that happened. Yeah, with Obi-Wan, our favorite
- 34:14character, it just added to his greatness.
- 34:17It really did. And it would think of all the
- 34:19epic moments that it led to, you know, it's pretty pretty fucking
- 34:24amazing. And it's, you know, it's like
- 34:26the Revival Revenge Lawless and then everything that happened in
- 34:32Clone Wars season 7. Yeah, the malls reappearance in
- 34:37Rebels and his spoiler alert his conclusion and Rebels.
- 34:44Yeah, fucking epic. Like every moment is layered
- 34:47with meaning and that's why it's really cool to see this
- 34:50character because he wasn't just brought back for shock value.
- 34:54He actually moved the story forward.
- 34:56He moved Obi-Wan story forward but he moved all of Star Wars
- 34:59forward. So I think it was actually a
- 35:01pretty masterful choice. Okay.
- 35:08Our audience question. How do you think?
- 35:12Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul are similar.
- 35:16Tell us your thoughts. There are many parallels between
- 35:20them, but do you see something that maybe we missed?
- 35:23Let us know your thoughts on this.
- 35:27So next week, we will pick this discussion back up and talk
- 35:31about Obi-Wan and Darth Maul's relationship starting with the
- 35:34episode, The Lawless and how Satine comes into play with all
- 35:39of this. And we will end in Rebels the
- 35:42finale of Darth Maul and Obi-Wan's relationship in the
- 35:46episode twin Sons. So join us back because this is
- 35:49this one is going to be really intense because a lot a lot goes
- 35:54on yeah between those two. It's a lot of chaos kinds of
- 36:00shit. So come on back.
