- 0:00Hey, everybody, welcome back to the show.
- 0:02This is Stage 0. My name is Will Walden, I'm your
- 0:05host, and today we're going to be talking about Starship Flight
- 0:0810 from Star Base, Texas. Now, you may be wondering what
- 0:13is going to be happening with Starship this time?
- 0:15What's going to be happening with a ship?
- 0:16What's going to be happening with a booster?
- 0:18I'm going to go over all of that today in this episode.
- 0:21Now, I want to urge you, though, to watch the Starship launch
- 0:25this weekend. It's going to be phenomenal.
- 0:28Flight 10, which is going to be setting up Starship not only for
- 0:32Flight 11, Flight 12, but for Block 3.
- 0:34Right now they're using Block 2 for the Starship flights, and
- 0:38they're going to be upgrading to flight to Block 3, which is a
- 0:43more powerful rocket in the future.
- 0:45And everything that they do with Block 2 and with this flight,
- 0:50Flight 10 and all the data that they collect from this flight
- 0:55will be used in the Block 3 configuration.
- 0:59Now, what will they be doing during this flight?
- 1:04There are a few things that they're going to be doing.
- 1:05They're going to be launching the booster and the ship, as per
- 1:08usual from Starbase. They're going to be collecting
- 1:13immense amounts of data from the booster.
- 1:16It's going to be doing the pretty normal booster stuff.
- 1:20It's going to launch the ship. Ship's going to detach.
- 1:23Booster's going to be doing the flip move slowly precisely
- 1:27landing in the Gulf of Mex America got to see it both
- 1:33things because people get really mad at the comments if I say
- 1:35Gulf of Mexico and some people get really mad when I say Gulf
- 1:38of America. So you kind of say both of them.
- 1:41So those are, that's one of the things that's going to be doing
- 1:45a slow descent into the Gulf. And during that time they're
- 1:52going to be collecting data for the next flight and then the
- 1:54next flight as well. So they're not going to be
- 1:56coming back to the launch area at all.
- 2:00Now, the ship, the ship is important.
- 2:03The last three ships blew up. Who would have thought, right?
- 2:11Three ships in a row blew up when they were flying at certain
- 2:16different distances and speeds and heights.
- 2:21Now, what is SpaceX have to say about all this stuff?
- 2:24Of course, 10th flight test, August 24th on Sunday, flight
- 2:29time starts at, I think 6:00 PM. Let's let's take a look real
- 2:31quick. 6:30 PM Central time, SpaceX goes over this on their
- 2:35website. They say of course on their X
- 2:38account they're going to be streaming it and they're going
- 2:41to start like 30 minutes before the launch actually starts after
- 2:44completion. Completing the investigations in
- 2:46the loss of Starship on its 9th test flight, which is this one
- 2:52FAA required investigation to Starship.
- 2:54This is the FAA website. By the way, SpaceX Starship
- 2:56flight 9 mishap is closed. The FAA is happy that SpaceX
- 3:01invested them, investigated themselves and found no
- 3:06wrongdoing. There's no reports of public
- 3:09injury or damage to public property.
- 3:11The FAA oversaw it accept the findings of SpaceX LED
- 3:13investigation. The final mishap report cites
- 3:16the probable root cause for the loss of the Starship vehicle as
- 3:19a failure of a fuel component. So basically what SpaceX has to
- 3:24do here or what they had to do is they had to take the data
- 3:29that they got from Flight 9. What the heck happened?
- 3:33And of course, the FAA says a failed fuel component.
- 3:38SpaceX knows that. I said, hey, FAA, this is what
- 3:42happened and this is how we're going to fix it.
- 3:44We're going to show you exactly the steps we're going to take,
- 3:46and then we're actually going to fix it.
- 3:48We're going to show you that, too.
- 3:50That's what SpaceX did. And then the FAA said, good job,
- 3:53SpaceX. Let's get you flying again.
- 3:56So right here, SpaceX identified the corrected actions to prevent
- 4:00the recurrence of the event. SpaceX also has said the same
- 4:04thing, basically. Now let's get into the flight a
- 4:06little bit, and this is from Spacex's website.
- 4:09Upcoming flight will continue to expand the operating envelope on
- 4:12the Super Heavy booster. I love this wording with
- 4:15multiple landing burn tests planned and will also target
- 4:18similar objectives as previous missions.
- 4:19Basically going to be the same thing, including Starship's
- 4:21first payload deployment and multiple re entry experiments
- 4:24geared towards returning the upper stage to the launch site
- 4:27for catch. So they're not going to send the
- 4:31upper stage to the launch site for catch yet.
- 4:35Now these are experiments. Re entry experiments geared
- 4:39towards returning the upper stage.
- 4:41Meaning the upper stage is going to do experiments, they're going
- 4:45to take that data and they're going to use it on future
- 4:48flights. That's how are they going to get
- 4:51the ship back to the launch site.
- 4:54Now, they haven't been able to land the ship in a while.
- 4:58Last three flights, kaboom. No way to land it when it's in a
- 5:02million pieces. I mean, I guess technically the
- 5:05pieces landed, but the ship as a hold in the land.
- 5:12The booster for the flight is attempting several flight
- 5:14experiments to gather real world performance data on future
- 5:17flight profiles and off nominal scenarios.
- 5:21So we could see, and this is all speculation, we could see the
- 5:24booster do a routine landing burn, pretty standard stuff.
- 5:32They've shown that they can do that so many times.
- 5:35But why would they do that again?
- 5:36They've caught the booster at the launch site.
- 5:40Why would they do that again off nominal scenarios?
- 5:44Could they just be testing this thing to fail?
- 5:47It's a possibility. It's a possibility of that they
- 5:50could. I got a water bottle, right?
- 5:52Pretend this is the booster. Booster comes in pretty normal,
- 5:56flows down pretty pretty simple. Now if the booster is off
- 6:03nominal and coming towards a tower, what do they do?
- 6:07If it's off nominal coming towards the tower, they have to
- 6:09reorient it, fix it to fix it in flight.
- 6:15Because if they don't fix it in flight after a certain time
- 6:19frame, wipes out the tower, wipes out the launchpad.
- 6:23SpaceX is set back months, if not years, because the FAA will
- 6:28investigate it and they'll shut it down.
- 6:31So these off nominal scenarios, it's not just for fun, people.
- 6:35This is because SpaceX wants to check out every scenario before
- 6:42the bad stuff happens. SpaceX is wild, right?
- 6:46We know they're wild. They do wild things.
- 6:50When the original kind of skunk works of Starship, when I was
- 6:54there, they were just kind of throwing things at the wall
- 6:57hoping things worked. You know, when they were down,
- 6:59when they were doing the, the, the original tests, right?
- 7:04And they had all the, the single engines and things and they were
- 7:09flying those down at Starbase and all they had was gravel and
- 7:13sand in a few like army tents. You know what, like that was
- 7:19wild. That was an experiment.
- 7:21That was them thinking it might work.
- 7:25Now they know that it does work. And now they have to get to the
- 7:29next phase, which is we're going to be launching 10 boosters per
- 7:36day if we're going to send a ship to Mars, right?
- 7:41If we're going to send a ship to Mars, what they need to do is
- 7:43get fuel into orbit as fast as possible into the tankers.
- 7:46So they need to have these boosters coming back, loading
- 7:49back up ships as fast as possible.
- 7:51So if anything's off nominal and they have to ditch the booster
- 7:55in the Gulf, they lose a booster, they lose time, they
- 7:58lose money, and they also lose the ability to refuel that ship
- 8:03in a time frame that they expected.
- 8:05So anything that's off nominal, the booster, woo Hoo, you know,
- 8:09going wow all over the place. They have to fix that mid
- 8:12flight. How do they do that?
- 8:14They test it in real world conditions.
- 8:16That's what they're going to be doing with this and hopefully
- 8:19we'll be able to see that this weekend.
- 8:23We'll attempt these experiments while on a trajectory to an
- 8:26offshore landing point and not return to the launch site
- 8:28following stage separation of the booster will do a flip
- 8:31control direction before initiating its boost back burn.
- 8:34This maneuver will demonstrate for the first time on Flight 9
- 8:37or it was demonstrated on the first time Flight 9 and requires
- 8:40less propellant to be held in reserve.
- 8:43Primary test objectives for the booster will be focused on its
- 8:46landing burn and will use unique engine configurations.
- 8:49One of the three center engine used for the final phase of
- 8:51landing will be intentionally disabled.
- 8:55This could make it spin out of control, Could make it go wild.
- 8:58But that's what they want. They have to gather real world
- 9:01data on the ability for a backup engine from the middle ring to
- 9:04complete a landing burn. Wild.
- 9:08It's crazy. Buser will then transition to
- 9:12only two center engines for the end of the landing burn,
- 9:14entering a full hover while still above the ocean surface,
- 9:18followed by a shutdown and drop into the Gulf of Ameriko.
- 9:24Americo Starship upper stage will again target multiple in
- 9:29space objectives. Starlink simulators.
- 9:32I got to open that door. People on Reddit love to yell
- 9:39about this and scream about this into the void.
- 9:42How can SpaceX? Make a rocket.
- 9:44How can they make a giant rocket that's 400 and 500 feet tall but
- 9:47the kid just. Open up a.
- 9:49Door in space. I've said it.
- 9:53I'm going to own up to it. I'm that I'm one of those
- 9:55people. How do you, how do you make a
- 9:58giant rocket and then you can't open up a door?
- 10:02I know it's harder than that. It's not a garage door where you
- 10:04push a button and it goes up. I know it's more difficult than
- 10:08that, but it's still funny. You know, you got to call them
- 10:11out on some of this stuff and I'm sure the engineers are like,
- 10:13oh man, right. So you're going to be doing
- 10:19several experiments. Significant number of tiles have
- 10:22been removed from Starship to stress test vulnerable areas
- 10:25across the vehicle during re entry.
- 10:28The stress test might just blow up another Starship.
- 10:31Multi motelic tile options, including one with active
- 10:34cooling, will test alternative materials for protecting
- 10:37Starship during re entry. If they could reduce the amount
- 10:41of tiles, they will reduce the complexity of the ship and will
- 10:48reduce the complexity of the reentry of the ship, which in
- 10:54the future will be great because A they can build ships faster
- 11:00and B they can refurbish ships faster to fly again.
- 11:05Because if you have think about it like this, if you can cut
- 11:07down 1000 tiles, say if the thing has 2000 tiles, you cut
- 11:11that in half, you have 1000 tiles.
- 11:13That's half the work and either way, building it or recovering
- 11:17it. So on the size of the vehicle,
- 11:20functional catch fittings are installed and we'll test the
- 11:23fittings thermal and structural performance because they have to
- 11:25catch this thing eventually. Along with a section of the tail
- 11:28line receiving a smooth and tapered edge to address hotspots
- 11:32observed during re entry, a Starship 6th test flight.
- 11:37So as you can see, flights way back to six are determining what
- 11:45they're doing for Flight 10. So anything for Flight 10 could
- 11:50determine what they're going to be doing for Flight 16.
- 11:53Something like, I don't know, somewhere in the future.
- 11:56Everything builds on each other, right?
- 11:57All the data that they get from Flight 1 builds up to Flight 10.
- 12:01It's all in a part of the same system.
- 12:05Starship for entry profile is designed to intentionally stress
- 12:07the structural limits of the upper stages, rear flaps while
- 12:10at the point of maximum entry, dynamic pressure.
- 12:14Now I'm going to say it, and I want you to probably say it too,
- 12:22but RIP in peace for the ship because they're going to be
- 12:26structurally testing the limits of the upper stages rear flaps.
- 12:31I don't think that's going to make it it while at the point of
- 12:35maximum entry dynamic pressure. They've never done this before.
- 12:40This is the first Test of this. So let me know in the comments,
- 12:47what do you think? Oh, please, please.
- 12:51What do you think? Do you think it's going to make
- 12:53it? This is stressing me out, Elon.
- 12:58The intentional stress, the structural limits of the upper
- 13:01stages, rear flaps without the maximum point of of entry,
- 13:05dynamic pressure. Come on, SpaceX, we don't want
- 13:10to lose another ship. What are you going to do?
- 13:14Can't do anything. It's going to blow up.
- 13:18The thing's going to things going to blow up.
- 13:19It's over. I'm done.
- 13:21I'm just I'm done. Goodbye.
- 13:25Flight tests continue to provide valuable learnings to inform the
- 13:28design of the next generation Starship.
- 13:30Super heavy vehicles production ramping up.
- 13:33OK, so it's going to blow up. Starship's going to blow up.
- 13:38Boosters going to blow up. Maybe, who knows, maybe we'll
- 13:41lose both FAA they're OK everything's going for the FAA
- 13:49Flight 10 August 4th. This is a long time ago, July
- 13:5211th, but this is a post by Luke LFG.
- 13:57Of course, this is for the for the flight operations of
- 14:02Starship Flight 10 launch vehicle communications for test
- 14:06Flight 10 mission launching from Starbase, Texas.
- 14:09And this is for the Super heavy booster.
- 14:14And basically the FCC is saying it's OK for them to communicate
- 14:18between the booster, the ship and the ground.
- 14:21So that's all go there's a no Tim now for French Guyana, a
- 14:26risks of elements fallout during launch of ship flight 10
- 14:30Starship flight 10 August 24th 25th 26th 27th 28th September
- 14:342nd September 3rd. So those are kind of a, an idea
- 14:38of the flight dates. If something doesn't work on the
- 14:4024th, which is this Sunday, the 25th is a possibility, 26th is a
- 14:45possibility, 27th is a possibility, etcetera, etcetera.
- 14:51Same for Cuba, Havana, Havana, August 25th, 26th, 27th,
- 14:58September 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th.
- 15:01So basically what we're expecting is Starship to fly
- 15:06this Sunday and if it doesn't, then you know, basically a
- 15:13backup days. That's what that is.
- 15:14It's backup days for the ship flight 10.
- 15:19And of course, before we actually get to it and know
- 15:25exactly when it's going to fly, we always go to the road
- 15:27closures, Rd. closures. Since it's Sunday, today is what
- 15:32day is today, Tuesday, today's Wednesday.
- 15:36So we still, we still have a few days before the road closures
- 15:40will actually come into effect, maybe tomorrow, maybe the next
- 15:43day, but we're going to see if the Starship, if Starbase is
- 15:49going to close down the roads. And you know, SpaceX has better
- 15:54reach on this stuff because they have the, the orders to close
- 15:58down these roads. So they'll close them down when
- 16:02they need to. But there's no, there's no word
- 16:05from the government yet about closing down the roads of Hwy.
- 16:084. Highway 4, if you're not
- 16:10familiar, is the road that goes all the way down Starbase.
- 16:14You can drive along Hwy. 4 and you can basically drive like
- 16:17kind of through Starbase. It's really, it's a really weird
- 16:20thing. I lived there for about a year
- 16:24and did on the on the road reporting and I was you
- 16:29basically drive down Hwy. 4 the whole way all the way to the
- 16:33beach. And on the way to the beach, on
- 16:36the left side there is the production facility and on the
- 16:39right side now there's Massey's too, which is the one test
- 16:42facility before you actually get to like star base proper.
- 16:45But on the left side there's the big star base facility.
- 16:48And then if you keep going down about a mile, going around kind
- 16:52of a curvy curve and at like right by the beach, there's a
- 16:58giant rocket launch facility that you can just pull up on.
- 17:02It's wild. And they close it down for these
- 17:05rocket launches because they don't want anybody to get hurt,
- 17:07basically. And there's a 7 mile kind of
- 17:10radius around it, 7:00-ish mile radius around it where you're
- 17:14not supposed to be on your boat in your plane or in person or
- 17:19anything, any, anything near it. So they closed all of that off
- 17:27before, you know, before they do any of these flights.
- 17:29So if you're going to one, if you're going to flight 10, I
- 17:33urge you to stay outside of the seven mile range.
- 17:36You can go to South Padre Island.
- 17:37South Padre Island is pretty cool.
- 17:40Was there a bunch during doing reporting and talking to people
- 17:46before the flights and things? And I was there before the 1st
- 17:48flight, so I didn't get a chance to see one of these flights.
- 17:52I'm actually working on it, so hopefully I'll get to see one of
- 17:54these flights. And if some of you are wondering
