- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Now, lady, welcome to Meet Eater Trivia MEA podcast.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Whea, Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am
- 0:30Speaker 3: Mountain Time on November fourteenth, and we're live from Meet
- 0:33Speaker 3: Eater HQ and Bozeman, Montana. I'm your host, Spencer new Arth,
- 0:37Speaker 3: joined today by Steve Ranella and Giannis Putellis. On today's show,
- 0:41Speaker 3: we're interviewing the world's greatest white tailed deer photographer Matt Hanson.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Then we've got a migration report from Flying vs Matt McCormick,
- 0:49Speaker 3: followed by one minute fishing with doctor Randall Williams. After that,
- 0:53Speaker 3: we'll look at old hunting and fishing pictures for a
- 0:56Speaker 3: new segment called Throwback Thursday. And finally we'll interview a
- 0:59Speaker 3: journalist about how forty three monkeys escaped a South Carolina
- 1:03Speaker 3: research facility. But first that is more about, go ahead,
- 1:08Speaker 3: what do you got a few things?
- 1:10Speaker 4: The white child? Dear photographer. I don't view it. It's
- 1:13Speaker 4: not gonna be an interview. It's gonna be a criticism,
- 1:15Speaker 4: okay by one of our three hosts. Yes, you're not
- 1:19Speaker 4: going to interview about how they escape. It's kind of
- 1:22Speaker 4: more about like what about how they escaped? Sure, because
- 1:26Speaker 4: like you have to interview the monkeys.
- 1:29Speaker 3: How would you phrase it?
- 1:29Speaker 4: Then? What do you think the interviews, We're going to
- 1:31Speaker 4: talk to him about the escape of a bunch of monkeys,
- 1:33Speaker 4: not how did they escape? I think that if you
- 1:35Speaker 4: have one of the monkeys coming on and we're like,
- 1:38Speaker 4: we're gonna talk to the monkey about how he escaped,
- 1:40Speaker 4: I think that's interesting.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Well, maybe our journalist has talked to one of these monkeys,
- 1:45Speaker 3: because I've heard that they've captured some by now.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Oh well, okay, I had another problem with something you said.
- 1:51Speaker 4: But go on, Oh you go on?
- 1:53Speaker 3: What else? Eh?
- 1:56Speaker 4: No, No, I'm just glad to be here.
- 1:58Speaker 3: It seems like Yanni, the first thing tell us about
- 2:02Speaker 3: your Wisconsin whitetail hunt. See is this all right to
- 2:05Speaker 3: interest you?
- 2:07Speaker 4: No? No, okay, do you know what happened? Talk to me?
- 2:11Speaker 3: Do you? How do you know what happened?
- 2:16Speaker 4: That's like, what more is there to say? Fixtures speak
- 2:19Speaker 4: for themselves.
- 2:20Speaker 3: I hear you.
- 2:21Speaker 2: You know, there's a point in the fall to where
- 2:24Speaker 2: you get to the point like early on or I'm like, man,
- 2:26Speaker 2: I want to hear everybody's hunting story, you know, detailed
- 2:29Speaker 2: by detail, and then as it wears on when someone
- 2:32Speaker 2: has killed one, I'm like, good, awesome deer, and then
- 2:36Speaker 2: let's move on and where are you at now? And
- 2:38Speaker 2: then I'm still I'm still pretty keen on listening to stories.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Somebody said to me last week. They said, the meat
- 2:44Speaker 3: eater like group chat must be popping off right now,
- 2:47Speaker 3: like everyone's like the rut's doing this. I just saw this.
- 2:50Speaker 3: My trail cams are blowing up. I said, no, in fact,
- 2:53Speaker 3: it's not. There was a group chat, but then Yanni
- 2:55Speaker 3: just started texting me on the side because we were
- 2:58Speaker 3: the only ones who were engaging.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I was a little offended by those fun by
- 3:01Speaker 2: those guys. You know I when I use the F
- 3:05Speaker 2: word on them, you know it's it's in. It's an endearment, but.
- 3:08Speaker 4: The effort being offended offended?
- 3:11Speaker 3: No, oh, it starts with f U and then ends
- 3:14Speaker 3: an E R S. But Yanni stopped at about the
- 3:16Speaker 3: f U in there.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I started. It was basically the group from
- 3:21Speaker 2: one week in November. So if you go back and
- 3:23Speaker 2: watch that, you can see who I'm talking about. But
- 3:27Speaker 2: I texted all of them and was kind of like
- 3:29Speaker 2: starting the rut, white tail rut group chat now and
- 3:34Speaker 2: dead silence from everybody besides Spencer.
- 3:37Speaker 3: And after a.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Couple of back and forth, I'm like, well, I guess
- 3:40Speaker 2: we're chocking, and yeah, I like.
- 3:44Speaker 4: When I get into a group text, I liked, I'll look,
- 3:49Speaker 4: but I don't want. I don't I don't engage. I look,
- 3:53Speaker 4: but I don't add to it.
- 3:55Speaker 3: But that's your You're a bad You're a bad member
- 3:57Speaker 3: then of the group chat. No, not a desirable person
- 4:01Speaker 3: to have in the group chat at that point.
- 4:03Speaker 4: My neighborhood has a group chat, and it's most like
- 4:08Speaker 4: it'd be like, oh, there's a bear over there, like
- 4:10Speaker 4: there's two moose fighting in the yard, or like we
- 4:13Speaker 4: saw potential pervert drive through, stuff like that. And one
- 4:17Speaker 4: day I was gonna send one out because my kids
- 4:21Speaker 4: pigeons went to live somewhere else. We don't know where
- 4:23Speaker 4: they went to live in and I was gonna two
- 4:27Speaker 4: and I was going to send out a note saying,
- 4:28Speaker 4: if you see these pigeons, let me know. But then
- 4:32Speaker 4: I didn't, and I said, I'll sit at the dinner table.
- 4:34Speaker 4: I said, this will be the first time I've ever
- 4:36Speaker 4: engaged with the neighborhood.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Group chat that seemed worthy of a text.
- 4:39Speaker 4: And my kids teased me about it, and then I
- 4:41Speaker 4: changed my mind didn't do it.
- 4:43Speaker 2: I think that sort of group chat that's acceptable behavior
- 4:47Speaker 2: because it's not a group of friends, it's a grand
- 4:51Speaker 2: on a grander scale, it's an entire neighborhood, and there's
- 4:54Speaker 2: probably thirty people, maybe forty people.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Yeah, quite a few.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Anyways, I would call it a little bit shunned that
- 5:00Speaker 2: no one else wanted to. I mean, we know that
- 5:02Speaker 2: everybody else is hunting deer and that they didn't want
- 5:06Speaker 2: to participate AnyWho.
- 5:08Speaker 3: I shouldn't have to find out on Instagram that Mark
- 5:10Speaker 3: Kenyan killed a buck.
- 5:11Speaker 2: He should be That's what I'm talking about right there,
- 5:15Speaker 2: That's exactly what I'm talking about. You'll know, buddy, when
- 5:17Speaker 2: I'm off Instagram. You'll know immediately if you're in my
- 5:21Speaker 2: circle or not, because you either will be getting.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Texts hey, how's the rout going?
- 5:26Speaker 4: Or you won't be. You didn't send me anything. I
- 5:28Speaker 4: got a little group text with two people about my
- 5:30Speaker 4: beaver cam.
- 5:33Speaker 3: We'll start a new one. You know, Chester needs to
- 5:36Speaker 3: be in it because I was.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Gonna happen in this show.
- 5:41Speaker 3: No, no, I'll tell you this. We set aside like
- 5:47Speaker 3: you got five to go, all right. Really, I had
- 5:52Speaker 3: a feeling this would happen. I know.
- 5:55Speaker 2: I started hunting. November fourth was my first day. The
- 6:00Speaker 2: area that I was hunting minutes the area that I
- 6:03Speaker 2: was hunting. This is a there's been a trend now
- 6:08Speaker 2: where the weather forecast is a quarter inch of rain
- 6:11Speaker 2: for the entire day and then thirty six hours later
- 6:15Speaker 2: someone's like, oh did you hear it rained three.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Inches in so and so County? Well that's what I had.
- 6:21Speaker 2: So it got so bad the second day that I
- 6:23Speaker 2: actually pulled out of the stand at noon because I
- 6:26Speaker 2: was afraid that my camera was just going to get.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Water logged and you know, shit the bed.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Okay, So day three, good wind. I sit on a
- 6:35Speaker 2: high ridge for the morning hunt.
- 6:37Speaker 3: No deer.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I moved down to food for the evening. No deer
- 6:41Speaker 2: come by me. I see food out or deer come
- 6:44Speaker 2: out in the bag fields, but nothing. I wouldn't call
- 6:47Speaker 2: it like a deer sighting because it wasn't in my
- 6:50Speaker 2: little bubble, right. It wasn't like oh I might get
- 6:52Speaker 2: a shot.
- 6:53Speaker 4: It was like some deer.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Exactly, Day four, the wind is just right for the
- 6:59Speaker 2: Oak flat. Like, I'm gonna go sit the oak flat
- 7:03Speaker 2: first thing in the morning. Pretty good buck. I sent
- 7:07Speaker 2: you a picture of the buck and you're like, that's
- 7:08Speaker 2: not a shooter. I'm like, well, what you don't know
- 7:11Speaker 2: is that he's got a nice frame. But like he
- 7:14Speaker 2: has got one long time it's like five inches long,
- 7:17Speaker 2: and everything else is these little nubs.
- 7:19Speaker 4: So here's a good photo of him.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and I tell you what that morning, because it
- 7:24Speaker 2: had we had so much rain, he comes walking across
- 7:26Speaker 2: the oak flat and those dark antlers are all wet
- 7:30Speaker 2: and the sun's just kind of punching through a little bit.
- 7:32Speaker 2: It's getting enough angle, and so those antlers are glistening.
- 7:35Speaker 2: And you know, we all say, oh, we like to
- 7:38Speaker 2: pass on these deer.
- 7:39Speaker 3: But in all.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Honesty, if you even hesitate on that white tailed deer,
- 7:44Speaker 2: I don't here it's a dough or a buck.
- 7:46Speaker 3: You hesitate and this you know, it sound.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Like you're sitting there going, well, let me break out
- 7:49Speaker 2: the pros and cons of this buck. You hesitate, you
- 7:53Speaker 2: passed that buck, because that's kind of what happened.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, I don't know. I'm like, oh,
- 7:57Speaker 3: that opportunity's gone.
- 7:59Speaker 4: You say, quick cut him off where I have like
- 8:02Speaker 4: ten seconds, You got two minutes. Oh it's really yeah,
- 8:06Speaker 4: save me ten seconds.
- 8:07Speaker 2: And uh so he comes through first, A seven point
- 8:12Speaker 2: comes through maybe like two hours later. At that point,
- 8:16Speaker 2: I'm thinking, man, if I can get like up buck
- 8:19Speaker 2: to come through every two hours today, no seven, Yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 2: I'm gonna have a hell of the day. Well, the
- 8:24Speaker 2: next two deer does, but they do come in on
- 8:28Speaker 2: like the every two hour schedule. And then the fifth
- 8:32Speaker 2: year is a dough She comes.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Through at about three point thirty.
- 8:36Speaker 2: And you know, I figured out a way to kind
- 8:38Speaker 2: of get through the all day grind of the white
- 8:40Speaker 2: tail rut.
- 8:40Speaker 3: There's yourself something huh you look at your cel phone.
- 8:44Speaker 3: There is that.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I try not to because the oak flat, the farthest
- 8:47Speaker 2: spot I can range is eighty six yards. So when
- 8:50Speaker 2: deer shows up, by the time you actually see it,
- 8:52Speaker 2: he's probably at seventy five or seventy and they're they're walking,
- 8:55Speaker 2: they're coming.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Don't have time to text.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I gotta go into your group chat, and so I
- 9:01Speaker 3: try not to do that.
- 9:02Speaker 2: But you can always tell yourself something, right, It's like
- 9:05Speaker 2: there's the morning, Oh, the morning's exciting. Oh then there's
- 9:07Speaker 2: the midday. Well that's when the big bucks are on
- 9:09Speaker 2: their feet, cruising because the dose are betted, and that's
- 9:11Speaker 2: when the big buck's going to come through. And then
- 9:12Speaker 2: you get to three and you're like, oh, now it's
- 9:15Speaker 2: the prime time until five until dark, right, Sure, so
- 9:19Speaker 2: Dough comes in at three point thirty. She's not supposed
- 9:22Speaker 2: to go behind me, because I've got this wall of
- 9:25Speaker 2: cut maples thrown down that is supposed to deter any
- 9:28Speaker 2: deer to get behind me and downwind of me. Yes,
- 9:33Speaker 2: she takes a split second look at it and just
- 9:36Speaker 2: weaves right into there, and I'm like, son of a bitch,
- 9:39Speaker 2: you know, like she hesitated, but not long enough to
- 9:42Speaker 2: change her mind.
- 9:43Speaker 3: You know.
- 9:43Speaker 2: So I had my bone hand. I was gonna shoot her,
- 9:46Speaker 2: no opportunity. I was gonna shoot her because I'm just
- 9:50Speaker 2: into shooting deer. So I'm uh, you know.
- 9:54Speaker 4: I thought you were big buck hunting.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Sorry, well I was, but I was also dough hunting
- 9:57Speaker 3: helps him big buck hunt. M hm.
- 10:00Speaker 2: And uh so forty five minutes later, I mean, picture perfect.
- 10:04Speaker 2: What I love about seeing these white tails and those
- 10:09Speaker 2: Midwestern deciduous woods. The first thing that material materializes is
- 10:15Speaker 2: that white set of antlers, right, because their body just
- 10:19Speaker 2: blends in like part of the the it's the tapestry,
- 10:23Speaker 2: you know, of the ground and the trees, and so
- 10:26Speaker 2: it's like all of a sudden, there's this rack. And
- 10:28Speaker 2: then two steps later, sort of like the ghost of
- 10:31Speaker 2: the body you know, shows up and like this buck.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I'm like, oh yeah, like shooter, I'm on it. He's
- 10:38Speaker 2: on the trail of the dough and I'm thinking, oh,
- 10:40Speaker 2: he's going to do the same thing. Like my little
- 10:42Speaker 2: wall that I've done here is not going to stop him.
- 10:45Speaker 2: So I swing around the tree, get the camera pointed
- 10:47Speaker 2: at him. He comes into my shooting lane. I'm at
- 10:49Speaker 2: full drop. I give him the map. But I gave
- 10:52Speaker 2: him a map. He didn't hear me. If anybody's still
- 10:55Speaker 2: out hunting there, if you're going to give him the
- 10:57Speaker 2: old map to stop them, do it loud. If you're
- 10:59Speaker 2: gonna do it at a three or four, do it
- 11:02Speaker 2: at like a nine or ten. I don't think they're
- 11:03Speaker 2: going to jump out of their skin and run the
- 11:05Speaker 2: other way just because you give him a loud map.
- 11:08Speaker 2: So he goes through my shooting lane and I'm like oh,
- 11:11Speaker 2: well that's it. Well, he gets to my little.
- 11:14Speaker 4: Wall imaginal line.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Yeah, he gets there and he's like huh, takes two
- 11:21Speaker 2: steps back, takes it right, and then comes right, and
- 11:26Speaker 2: then takes it comes right underneath my stand at ten yards. Unfortunately,
- 11:31Speaker 2: I was already at full draw, so I couldn't swing
- 11:33Speaker 2: the camera and stay on him. So I'm pretty sure
- 11:35Speaker 2: he walked out a frame for the shop. But uh
- 11:39Speaker 2: ten yards, Uh scapula rib on the way in, rib
- 11:43Speaker 2: on the way out pass through. I ranged the spot
- 11:46Speaker 2: where he's standing at ten where I shot him when
- 11:48Speaker 2: I washed him where he fell over. I ranged him
- 11:51Speaker 2: on the ground at forty nine yards.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Oh, oh, wonderful.
- 11:54Speaker 3: Read the script beautiful.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Uh oh, just so I want you know, because I'm
- 12:02Speaker 4: trying to sell you on this little scheme. Me and
- 12:04Speaker 4: poverty Pad are working out.
- 12:06Speaker 3: You don't have to sell me.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Well, listen, I'm sending out two mole trees. Okay, yeah,
- 12:10Speaker 4: I'm gonna. I'm gonna and I'll give you the log in. Okay,
- 12:13Speaker 4: he's gonna send that's.
- 12:14Speaker 3: A group text i'd like to get.
- 12:16Speaker 4: So we're sending out a couple of mole trees out there,
- 12:19Speaker 4: isn't yeah, well so I just happened to have two
- 12:21Speaker 4: sitting on my work bench. Yeah, I was saying, you
- 12:23Speaker 4: can have those. We're gonna send them out. I can
- 12:25Speaker 4: add more to it. I'll give you the log in
- 12:28Speaker 4: and we're gonna find out what all is what I'm in.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I think I know what's there, and it's a big
- 12:32Speaker 3: white tail.
- 12:33Speaker 4: The only reason I'm inviting you is to make him jealous.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Oh good, so you're already telling me I'm out.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Yeah, damn good because poverty Pat was kind of running this,
- 12:43Speaker 2: uh this whole idea by me too.
- 12:45Speaker 3: What Yeah, oh you know, I didn't want to tell
- 12:48Speaker 3: you this.
- 12:49Speaker 4: It is kind of like his deal, So maybe you're out. Spencer.
- 12:51Speaker 3: He a live show to me, and I was kind
- 12:54Speaker 3: of poking around then, like, oh, what where's this property at?
- 12:57Speaker 3: How many acres? And how many where are the cattle
- 12:59Speaker 3: at on this property? I think we put the full
- 13:02Speaker 3: court meter prass on.
- 13:04Speaker 4: This next we figure it out off air, but not
- 13:08Speaker 4: listening because he's gonna probably he might take all this
- 13:10Speaker 4: the wrong way. Yeah, I'm gonna be I don't If
- 13:14Speaker 4: I wind up being out, I'm gonna be pissed.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Speaking of picture perfect whitetail scenes like Yanni had. Our
- 13:21Speaker 3: next guest is the world's greatest whitetail dear photographer Matt Hanson.
- 13:26Speaker 3: If you don't know his name, you certainly know his work,
- 13:28Speaker 3: which has been used across the hunting industry. Matt, Welcome
- 13:31Speaker 3: to the show.
- 13:33Speaker 5: Hey, what's up, guys?
- 13:34Speaker 4: How's going good?
- 13:35Speaker 3: Matt? Tell us where you're standing today, not in the office.
- 13:39Speaker 5: Nice soggy Midwestern day. And then one of my honey holes.
- 13:45Speaker 5: Uh well, he used to be a honey hole. One
- 13:48Speaker 5: buck wandered in October twenty fourth, So I guess one
- 13:50Speaker 5: buck's better than none.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Okay, one of your honey holes. Now, tell us about
- 13:54Speaker 3: the kinds of places that you take these wonderful pictures.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Is it private ground, state parks, national park, city parks, like, like,
- 14:01Speaker 3: what's what's your favorite spots to get these great photos?
- 14:05Speaker 5: Yes, all the above. Right now, I'm in a metro area,
- 14:11Speaker 5: so it's more like a city park surrounded by neighborhoods.
- 14:15Speaker 5: And I have three or four of these kind of spots.
- 14:17Speaker 5: And then I also do the national parks. I have
- 14:20Speaker 5: some state parks and then some wildlife refuges.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Okay, Steve the floors you will so well you want
- 14:27Speaker 3: me to tell them? Yeah?
- 14:28Speaker 2: Yeah, hold on, but first, Matt, are you are you
- 14:30Speaker 2: hunting with the camera today or with a bow.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Camera? Okay, do you hunt? Do you hunt with a
- 14:38Speaker 4: bow or hunt with anything weapons? Yep? I do.
- 14:42Speaker 5: I shot a meal deer in a prong horn last
- 14:45Speaker 5: month in Wyoming, but I normally do like one hunt
- 14:49Speaker 5: every two years. I haven't killed the white tail in
- 14:51Speaker 5: probably four years.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Huh. Now, Steve had some thoughts about where some of
- 14:57Speaker 3: these photos.
- 14:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I want to hear this criticis.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Well, what I was sharing with the boys here, and
- 15:03Speaker 4: you know, if you're doing food photography, the food needs
- 15:06Speaker 4: to the food needs to be edible. Okay, like in
- 15:10Speaker 4: the old days, if you were, like if you're advertising
- 15:13Speaker 4: place settings, I think you can get away with the
- 15:16Speaker 4: food not being edible. But if it's food photography, the
- 15:19Speaker 4: food's edible. So on a food shoot, you might they
- 15:23Speaker 4: used to like take a turkey and they would literally
- 15:25Speaker 4: varnish a turkey right now that yet it has to
- 15:28Speaker 4: be food. Has I feel that it should be illegal?
- 15:34Speaker 4: Like I think if you're putting a deer a photo
- 15:38Speaker 4: of a deer in a hunting context meaning on a
- 15:40Speaker 4: hunting magazine, hunting website, that should be a huntable deer.
- 15:46Speaker 4: I don't think it's fair, okay to put a not
- 15:50Speaker 4: huntable deer in a hunting publication. I think it should
- 15:55Speaker 4: be illegal.
- 15:56Speaker 5: Okay, all right, I hear that.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Yeah, what so, like what percentage of white tails that
- 16:04Speaker 3: you photograph are not hauntable.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Because you're getting people excited and it's not true.
- 16:13Speaker 5: Yeah, well it's just like all the alk photos you see,
- 16:18Speaker 5: so you gotta talk to the al photographer.
- 16:20Speaker 3: That should be illegal too, Matt, tell folks where they've
- 16:25Speaker 3: seen your pictures before, just.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Generally all about hunting magazines. Currently I have Peterson's Hunting
- 16:34Speaker 5: cover and then North American White Tail cover. I think
- 16:36Speaker 5: I have a spread and bow Hunter, and then all
- 16:39Speaker 5: the hunting companies as well, Cabella's Bass Pro. You guys,
- 16:46Speaker 5: Spencer has been very good to me for the website doing.
- 16:49Speaker 5: I think it's over two hundred articles now.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Some it is so and how how many how many
- 16:56Speaker 3: covers have you had in your life magazines?
- 17:00Speaker 5: It's well over one hundred now. I've been doing this
- 17:02Speaker 5: for about ten years. It really took traction five years ago,
- 17:06Speaker 5: so probably about eighty in the past five years.
- 17:08Speaker 4: And how is that good run?
- 17:09Speaker 3: How has the white tail photography business changed over the
- 17:12Speaker 3: last decade then?
- 17:13Speaker 4: Is it?
- 17:14Speaker 3: Is it getting harder to make a living doing this?
- 17:19Speaker 5: Yes, but obviously with the everything changing to online makes
- 17:25Speaker 5: something's difficult. But I'm going to go positive here and
- 17:28Speaker 5: say the concentration on big rackx has lessened in the
- 17:33Speaker 5: past decade, and that's really helped me because about half
- 17:37Speaker 5: my covers are one hundred and forty inch year or smaller,
- 17:42Speaker 5: and ten twenty years ago I would have barely sold
- 17:46Speaker 5: any of those. So that's a huge positive in the
- 17:48Speaker 5: hunting industry. And I think you guys have a lot
- 17:51Speaker 5: of blame or credit to that because meat eater obviously
- 17:57Speaker 5: you shoot big animals when you see them, but you're
- 17:59Speaker 5: not completely picky every time you go out, which has
- 18:03Speaker 5: been a huge help for me because I I'd much
- 18:07Speaker 5: rather a decent, mature buck in a gorgeous scene than
- 18:12Speaker 5: just a giant buck in a really messy scene.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Steve, you feel a little bad now for criticizing him, Yeah,
- 18:16Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 18:18Speaker 4: But the wheels that are turning into my head is,
- 18:21Speaker 4: let's say, like, how much goodwill would you get if
- 18:25Speaker 4: a publication or an online thing said, you know what, bro,
- 18:30Speaker 4: all of our dear, all of our wildlife photography is
- 18:32Speaker 4: huntable game.
- 18:34Speaker 3: I thought you were gonna go a different direction, say
- 18:35Speaker 3: like Field and Streams should put a spike on their cover.
- 18:38Speaker 4: No, no, no, no, I don't care what they do.
- 18:40Speaker 3: Okay, Matt, tell us tell us about your favorite tell
- 18:44Speaker 3: us about your favorite photo of all time that you've
- 18:46Speaker 3: ever taken in this last decade of white tailed deer photography.
- 18:51Speaker 5: Okay, there's a lot of them, but the one that
- 18:54Speaker 5: comes to mind is probably my most well known one.
- 18:57Speaker 5: It's just a really nice buck with a huge vapor
- 18:59Speaker 5: class out in a snowy setting, which was actually I
- 19:03Speaker 5: looked up the excess exit data it was November fourteenth,
- 19:09Speaker 5: so today in twenty eighteen, let's.
- 19:11Speaker 4: See you, Phil.
- 19:14Speaker 3: It's not prep Steve.
- 19:16Speaker 4: Oh, that's called BAP. Yeah, bad at producing.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Okay, so your favorite photo? How big was that white
- 19:25Speaker 3: tail that you took?
- 19:26Speaker 4: Was? Was he a giant or standard?
- 19:28Speaker 5: Yes, he's pretty big. He's in the one fifties, I
- 19:32Speaker 5: would say.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Okay, it's the vapor cloud that's his bread. Yes, yes, so.
- 19:39Speaker 5: Backlit, really cold morning and he's right on the edge
- 19:42Speaker 5: of the clearing, so I was in the woods. He
- 19:44Speaker 5: was right on the edge of the woods, and I
- 19:47Speaker 5: was shooting back towards the field.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Phil is gonna work on photo.
- 19:53Speaker 2: I got a question while we're waiting on that. Yeah, what, Matt,
- 19:56Speaker 2: what is there like a behavior, a dear behavior that
- 20:00Speaker 2: you think that you've noticed over the years of doing
- 20:03Speaker 2: this with the camera that maybe most white tail deer
- 20:08Speaker 2: hunters don't know about or aren't like privy to something
- 20:13Speaker 2: that you've seen because of your just the amount of
- 20:15Speaker 2: hours you've spent with these deer and.
- 20:17Speaker 5: Bosses, and I feel a lot of hunters don't get
- 20:21Speaker 5: up close and personal with the snortweeze and it's pretty
- 20:24Speaker 5: intimidating and pretty awesome.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Hmm Yeah, snort wheeze.
- 20:28Speaker 3: If you don't know that, Wow, that's like the most
- 20:31Speaker 3: aggressive vocalization that a whitetail has in his role ofdex.
- 20:35Speaker 3: That's telling another white tail I'm gonna whoop your ass
- 20:38Speaker 3: right now if you come over here. And that's that's
- 20:40Speaker 3: what a snort wheeze is. Yep, Matt. Have you ever
- 20:43Speaker 3: been photographing a deer that ends up getting shot?
- 20:48Speaker 5: Yes, a lot on this property.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Actually, oh, so.
- 20:55Speaker 4: This used to be.
- 20:58Speaker 5: Really twenty We had some really good bucks and we're
- 21:05Speaker 5: down to one now. So they come and go as
- 21:07Speaker 5: they please, and unfortunately, well I hunt also, so it's
- 21:13Speaker 5: not completely unfortunately. But if you just ask for permission,
- 21:17Speaker 5: I think Michigan is one hundred and fifty yards. I
- 21:20Speaker 5: don't know what other states in the Midwest are, but
- 21:22Speaker 5: if you get written permission from neighbors at one hundred
- 21:24Speaker 5: and fifty yards, you can both hunt that animal. And
- 21:27Speaker 5: these deer are coming and going almost every day, so
- 21:31Speaker 5: a lot get wiped out. And then also a fun
- 21:36Speaker 5: little thing, Me and my buddy surprised our parents down
- 21:40Speaker 5: at a Texas hunt, so we showed up the day before,
- 21:46Speaker 5: total surprise, and I actually photographed the buck that my
- 21:50Speaker 5: dad shot the following day, so that's kind of cool.
- 21:52Speaker 5: So he has the live and field kill shot in
- 21:56Speaker 5: his office now, which is pretty that's good.
- 21:58Speaker 3: But have you ever been Oh okay, Phil now has
- 22:02Speaker 3: Matt's favorite photo of all time on the screen.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Yeah, it looks like that deer eat squirrels. Man. Uh huh.
- 22:07Speaker 3: When people say that a big buck for the cover
- 22:11Speaker 3: of outdoor magazines, that's what they're talking about Matt. Where
- 22:14Speaker 3: has that photo been used before?
- 22:17Speaker 5: That was on the cover of Quality White Tails. So
- 22:19Speaker 5: actually that afternoon I went to a Chick fil A
- 22:22Speaker 5: and immediately sent it to Lindsay and he was like, yep,
- 22:25Speaker 5: so that was on the following cover. Yeah, it's normally
- 22:29Speaker 5: it doesn't happen that quickly because you shoot like this year,
- 22:34Speaker 5: I'm going to be selling for next fall. But this
- 22:37Speaker 5: was just a perfect thing that worked out. November fourteenth,
- 22:40Speaker 5: there's still time for the Winner issue to come out,
- 22:42Speaker 5: and it was just meant to be.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Yeah, that buck is worthy of an outdoor magazine. Matt,
- 22:48Speaker 3: good luck with the rest of your photo taking and
- 22:51Speaker 3: you're hunting this fall. You can see Matt's work on
- 22:54Speaker 3: our website. Any magazine rack you look at in a
- 22:57Speaker 3: gas station or grocery store, if you see your beautiful
- 23:00Speaker 3: picture of a white tail, there's a decent chance that
- 23:03Speaker 3: that belongs to Matt Hanson.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Got Phil's tearing it up. Now look at all this photos.
- 23:07Speaker 4: He's tearing it a new one over there.
- 23:08Speaker 6: Now, Ryan says, which doesn't mean what you're thinking.
- 23:14Speaker 3: It means wonderful at producing says Ryan.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Uh and uh.
- 23:18Speaker 3: If you are part of our YouTube audience, you can
- 23:21Speaker 3: see the full pictures.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Oh I like that one too.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Good job, Phil, all right, have a good day in
- 23:28Speaker 3: the woods, Phil, all right. Our next segment is the
- 23:36Speaker 3: Migration Report.
- 23:38Speaker 4: When you can sun food and the cham sassle, then
- 23:43Speaker 4: you suffer.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Alright, Chrishan is the West? What do you boys like that?
- 23:53Speaker 3: I couldn't understand what it said.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Now.
- 23:56Speaker 3: The Migration Report is where Matt McCormick gives a waterfowl
- 23:59Speaker 3: hunting forecast for each flyway.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Take it away, Matt.
- 24:03Speaker 7: Hey guys, I'm Matt McCormick with Flying V and welcome
- 24:07Speaker 7: to the meat Eater Migration Report from November fourteenth, twenty
- 24:11Speaker 7: twenty four. I'm reporting, do you live from the gorge
- 24:14Speaker 7: here in southwest Montana? And we are witnessing significant shifts
- 24:18Speaker 7: in the waterfowl migration as we move deeper into November.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Let's dive right.
- 24:23Speaker 7: In here in the Pacific Flyway. We have mega cold
- 24:28Speaker 7: weather on the way. We're talking like single digits up
- 24:32Speaker 7: in Alberta. This cold snap will absolutely freeze up the
- 24:37Speaker 7: small holding water up in Alberta and should push some
- 24:42Speaker 7: of those birds from the Peace River area, hopefully all
- 24:45Speaker 7: the way down into the States.
- 24:47Speaker 4: The Pacific Northwest.
- 24:48Speaker 7: Is already seeing a big influx of wigeon on the
- 24:51Speaker 7: front end of this storm.
- 24:53Speaker 4: And although overall goose numbers are.
- 24:55Speaker 7: Down over here in the Pacific Flyway, reports are showing
- 25:00Speaker 7: good movement into all the staging areas across the flyway.
- 25:03Speaker 7: Here in Montana, we are experiencing a steady flow of
- 25:06Speaker 7: ducks arriving daily over the last few weeks, but we're
- 25:10Speaker 7: all ready for a little bit colder weather. In the
- 25:14Speaker 7: Central Flyway, cold fronts and north winds have picked up
- 25:18Speaker 7: the pace of the migration. There are still a pile
- 25:21Speaker 7: of birds balled up right there at the Canadian US border,
- 25:25Speaker 7: but South Dakota does still hold a large concentration of
- 25:29Speaker 7: both ducks and geese. The front end of that migration
- 25:33Speaker 7: is pushing all the way down into Kansas and Oklahoma,
- 25:36Speaker 7: and I know those guys down in Oklahoma are just
- 25:39Speaker 7: beating them up right now on that leading edge. As
- 25:42Speaker 7: temperatures continue to drop over the next few weeks, hunters
- 25:45Speaker 7: can expect increased activity and fresh.
- 25:48Speaker 4: Arrivals all along the flyways.
- 25:51Speaker 7: So if you guys are wondering if you should go hunting,
- 25:54Speaker 7: now is the time It's been a little bit of
- 25:56Speaker 7: an unusual year for everybody in the Mississippi Flyway, with
- 25:59Speaker 7: ten being above average, but the migration is still progressing steadily.
- 26:05Speaker 7: Recent rains have improved habitat conditions, setting the stage for
- 26:09Speaker 7: prime duck hunting opportunities, and the geese aren't all that
- 26:14Speaker 7: far behind. Hunters in Minnesota can look forward to those
- 26:17Speaker 7: big migration days that everyone has been waiting for. They're
- 26:21Speaker 7: on their way boards, So call up your bodies, load
- 26:24Speaker 7: up the guns, get in the pit, and go hunting
- 26:26Speaker 7: because they're coming. Lastly, in the Atlantic Flyway, migration activity
- 26:32Speaker 7: is gradually increasing, much like the other parts of the country.
- 26:36Speaker 7: Colder temperatures and improved habitat conditions are expected to drive
- 26:41Speaker 7: movement in the upcoming weeks. Hunters along the eastern seaboards
- 26:45Speaker 7: should keep a close eye on weather patterns, as they'll
- 26:48Speaker 7: play a really big role in the timing and the
- 26:50Speaker 7: volume of the incoming birds. I know that there's a
- 26:54Speaker 7: bunch of birds up in the Saint Lawrence regions. Still
- 26:57Speaker 7: they will push down into you guys here shortly. That's
- 27:00Speaker 7: it for this week's migration report. Whether you're hunting sheet
- 27:03Speaker 7: water in the Pacific Northwest, or gearing up for some
- 27:05Speaker 7: big MiG days in the Mississippi Flyway. The upcoming weather
- 27:09Speaker 7: patterns are setting the stage for some killer hunting ahead.
- 27:13Speaker 7: This is gonna be exciting, guys. November is here. We're
- 27:15Speaker 7: all looking forward to the cooler weather. Stay tuned for
- 27:19Speaker 7: more updates and good luck out there.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Back to you guys, hot damn, oh good damn. Phil.
- 27:25Speaker 4: You know what you ought to do? Man, I would
- 27:28Speaker 4: rig it up where when he's doing that, it's got
- 27:31Speaker 4: one of those weatherman things in the background.
- 27:33Speaker 6: M that sounds like a lot of money and work.
- 27:37Speaker 4: And yeah, he points and it's like all kinds of
- 27:40Speaker 4: graphics and like arrows, do you know what I mean?
- 27:44Speaker 6: Yeah, that sounds incredible. I'd love to see it.
- 27:46Speaker 4: That's how I would rigged out.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Steve. I've seen some news lately about the geese arriving
- 27:50Speaker 3: at Freeze Out Lake in Montana. That's a place I've
- 27:53Speaker 3: heard you talk.
- 27:53Speaker 4: We used to do it every year.
- 27:55Speaker 3: What's your relationship with that lake?
- 27:57Speaker 4: Oh? We go hunt snow geese. Uh huh, and we
- 28:00Speaker 4: call the hotline. This is pre internet. The Internet wasn't
- 28:04Speaker 4: as souped up as it is now. I liked it
- 28:08Speaker 4: better back then. I was telling someone their day right
- 28:10Speaker 4: in this room. The main thing I like about the
- 28:12Speaker 4: internet is you can watch the world's greatest hockey goals
- 28:14Speaker 4: of all time in slow motion.
- 28:17Speaker 3: That's your favorite thing.
- 28:18Speaker 4: There's so much more going on than you'd think is
- 28:20Speaker 4: going on. That's a good use of the Internet. But
- 28:23Speaker 4: I preferred it when you would call the hotline and
- 28:26Speaker 4: they would estimate they'd be like eight thousand snows, twenty
- 28:30Speaker 4: thousand snows, twenty five thousand snows, and then you drop
- 28:33Speaker 4: everything freezer.
- 28:35Speaker 3: This hotline still exists.
- 28:37Speaker 4: I don't know, man, I think it's all I think
- 28:38Speaker 4: it's all online not stupid.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Now, are you impressed by like the trickery of the
- 28:43Speaker 3: shooter or the reaction of the goalie, or when you're
- 28:46Speaker 3: watching these slow mo hockey shots.
- 28:50Speaker 4: The puck handling is unlike? Yeah. And the thing is,
- 28:53Speaker 4: me and Randall were talking about this prior to this,
- 28:58Speaker 4: maybe two guys knew what happened mmmmm, the like maybe
- 29:05Speaker 4: two people knew what exactly happened on that goal. Sure,
- 29:09Speaker 4: meaning when you're coming in and like the pucks like
- 29:12Speaker 4: between your feet and you and you like backhand. No
- 29:15Speaker 4: one knows. None of the spectators know. No one knows. Also,
- 29:19Speaker 4: they're aware that the pucks in the net, but they
- 29:22Speaker 4: never knew what the guy did. He has to go
- 29:25Speaker 4: to the grave knowing what he did, and no one
- 29:28Speaker 4: knows what he did.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Well, now you make it to the grave because the
- 29:30Speaker 2: next day on Sports Center they showed it.
- 29:32Speaker 3: In slow mode.
- 29:33Speaker 4: I mean back in the old days.
- 29:34Speaker 3: Uh that okay, that brings me joy, that those highlights.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Bring you joy. My daughter's a hockey player.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Okay, all right, let's take a break for some listener feedback. Phil.
- 29:46Speaker 3: What's the chat have to say?
- 29:47Speaker 6: Oh, a lot of stuff. First of all, golden arrows wondering, honest,
- 29:51Speaker 6: why are you wearing a letterman's jacket? You want to
- 29:53Speaker 6: talk about what you're wearing there? You know I always.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Wanted a letter letterman's jacket when I was in high school.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Did either of you ever?
- 30:00Speaker 4: It was a big j on it.
- 30:01Speaker 3: I had the letter, but I never went through with
- 30:03Speaker 3: it and got the jacket.
- 30:04Speaker 4: You think our school even had those.
- 30:06Speaker 2: I got a letter too for running cross country, huh,
- 30:09Speaker 2: But I didn't get the jacket either.
- 30:11Speaker 6: Here I got a band.
- 30:13Speaker 2: No, this was just sitting on my desk, and yeah,
- 30:17Speaker 2: I tried it on. I thought, and I thought, man,
- 30:19Speaker 2: if it's really nice, So I decided to wear it
- 30:21Speaker 2: for the show today.
- 30:22Speaker 3: Steve was trying to talk a lot of it so
- 30:24Speaker 3: he could have it.
- 30:25Speaker 6: That's right, Stormy Chromer Steve.
- 30:27Speaker 4: One of my favorite Yannie stories of all time is
- 30:30Speaker 4: he had a blaze orange Stormy Chromer hat and he
- 30:32Speaker 4: had it so long that it faded so much, and
- 30:35Speaker 4: eventually a game board and told him that it was
- 30:37Speaker 4: his last year with that hat?
- 30:40Speaker 3: Was it your last year? Indeed? Well, yeah, guys, get
- 30:43Speaker 3: not that orange.
- 30:44Speaker 4: He goes, you can hunt this year, but next year
- 30:46Speaker 4: I might have a new hat.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Yea. So not a letter not a letterman's jacket.
- 30:52Speaker 2: No, it's a Stormy Chromer meat eater or collab. You
- 30:55Speaker 2: can find it on the website. I bet you can
- 30:57Speaker 2: find it on the Stormy Chromer website too. It's got
- 31:00Speaker 2: like a little quilting on the inside.
- 31:03Speaker 3: If you can't afford that.
- 31:07Speaker 4: Bullshitter's calendar.
- 31:10Speaker 2: But how did you have to say it for the
- 31:11Speaker 2: folks that don't like the naughty language.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Oh yeah, for Clay, I sent Clay. I made up
- 31:16Speaker 4: a Clay nucome cover or its dilapidated old potties because
- 31:20Speaker 4: he doesn't. But he said, we could have used crappers
- 31:22Speaker 4: and he still would have been okay with his family,
- 31:24Speaker 4: haven't it right? But yeah, dilapidated old potties, but it's
- 31:27Speaker 4: actually not available available for everyone else. You got to
- 31:30Speaker 4: get the f up for everyone else. You have to
- 31:32Speaker 4: have to swear word. I was listening to you know,
- 31:34Speaker 4: uh what quite surprised me. I think I think like
- 31:37Speaker 4: swear words are different now. Six days before the election,
- 31:41Speaker 4: jd Vance was on Rogan's podcast and he said the
- 31:44Speaker 4: F word. Mmm, So I'm like, okay, we're in a
- 31:46Speaker 4: new era now. Yeah, you could be running for vice
- 31:49Speaker 4: presidents and say the F word. Damn. Sure could be
- 31:53Speaker 4: on this calendar.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Do you think there was a time in your life
- 31:55Speaker 3: where the vice president couldn't say the word.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Yeah, it was seven days ago.
- 32:01Speaker 6: Healthy j has had a pretty at a pretty filthy mouth,
- 32:03Speaker 6: and I think it was it was kind of like
- 32:05Speaker 6: off the record every all.
- 32:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it was all that stuff that they the secret tapes.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Sure, so the calendar in the meat Eater store and
- 32:12Speaker 3: Yannie's spiffy stormy chromer orange vest also in the store.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Ye and we're and I'm taking suggestions for ne do
- 32:19Speaker 4: we have time? Sure, I'm taking suggestions for next year's calendar.
- 32:22Speaker 4: Where we were talking about doing fucked up old fish
- 32:24Speaker 4: cleaning stations, but it's hard to capture the image, and
- 32:28Speaker 4: it's hard to capture the smell. Then fucked up old boats.
- 32:34Speaker 4: That's a good one. Fucked up old fisherman and it's
- 32:39Speaker 4: just pictures of fucked up old fisherman like that. Oh yeah,
- 32:44Speaker 4: a lot of them are dead, but what would they
- 32:46Speaker 4: look like? Well, we're gonna get to one. What do
- 32:51Speaker 4: you mean when we I don't like the name throwback Thursdays.
- 32:53Speaker 4: I think that's stupid. But there's a.
- 32:55Speaker 3: Old come up with that's like a social media it.
- 33:00Speaker 4: Uh, I'll tell you about one. I'll tell you about one.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Phil, what else you got? Votive?
- 33:06Speaker 6: Just recognized that Phil and Steve remind me of my
- 33:08Speaker 6: parents passively aggressively arguing with each other for the voting.
- 33:12Speaker 3: You should have heard us before the show. Uh, there was.
- 33:15Speaker 3: There was a pretty earnest remark made by Phil that said, Steve,
- 33:19Speaker 3: I feel like you're mad at me a lot. Yeah no,
- 33:23Speaker 3: and then I said that he disagreement. It's like today
- 33:26Speaker 3: I love my job. Yeah, both those things happen opinions on.
- 33:32Speaker 6: I'm guessing just pen Ray's birds being released on public land.
- 33:35Speaker 6: It's our only good upland opportunity here in Illinois, Wisconsin.
- 33:38Speaker 6: That's from Zach. Do you guys have any I think
- 33:40Speaker 6: you've shared some of this, Steve, but it's a little
- 33:43Speaker 6: wishy washy. We don't have to get into it putting
- 33:45Speaker 6: you on the spot here, I don't mind.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Me put it on spot. What's you say? If it
- 33:52Speaker 4: was possible to take that money an effort and do
- 33:59Speaker 4: the right habitat work to get wild birds on the ground,
- 34:06Speaker 4: I think that that would be a better use of
- 34:08Speaker 4: time than it is to set up a sort of
- 34:13Speaker 4: pretend amusement park type situation.
- 34:19Speaker 3: Yeah, you know that.
- 34:20Speaker 2: I didn't know where Steve was going, but my first
- 34:23Speaker 2: thought was that, Yeah, I just wish that we could
- 34:26Speaker 2: put that energy into habitat and then have wild birds.
- 34:31Speaker 2: You're great, but if it is your only opportunity, have fun.
- 34:35Speaker 2: It's a complicated situation and we should do a.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Whole thing about it. Thanks for springing that up, Phil.
- 34:42Speaker 6: You're welcome, Steve. Last one before our next segment. This
- 34:46Speaker 6: is kind of broad. But you guys are from the
- 34:48Speaker 6: area sort of. So Thomas's as.
- 34:50Speaker 8: Do we still eat it Dave Sushi? Yeah, great, we
- 34:52Speaker 8: can do that one too. Oh, I'll talk about that
- 34:55Speaker 8: at length. I'll talk about that at length. I just
- 34:59Speaker 8: went back, we're switching. I still need a Dave Sushi. Listen,
- 35:04Speaker 8: set the stage, set the stage.
- 35:07Speaker 4: All right, do we have time for this?
- 35:09Speaker 3: We got time for anything. We want to have time.
- 35:11Speaker 4: My favorite restaurant, and my favorite restaurant here used to
- 35:16Speaker 4: be Dave Sushi. Oh yeah, Dudell family favorite. They bought
- 35:24Speaker 4: some imported morel mushrooms. I didn't even know this existed.
- 35:28Speaker 4: They bought some moral mushrooms that were cultivated and imported
- 35:31Speaker 4: from China, and they were serving them like in a
- 35:35Speaker 4: not cooked roll, not cooked. They were like giving them
- 35:38Speaker 4: a splash of vinegar, serving them uncooked. And they had
- 35:42Speaker 4: a made a bunch of people sick and killed a
- 35:45Speaker 4: couple of people.
- 35:47Speaker 9: Uh.
- 35:48Speaker 4: And then everybody's like, oh, it's dangerous to eat it
- 35:50Speaker 4: Dave Sushi. I said, well not anymore. It ain't. Yeah, guarantee,
- 35:53Speaker 4: they're not selling that.
- 35:54Speaker 3: It's like they say, the safest day to fly was,
- 35:56Speaker 3: you know, right after nine eleven.
- 35:58Speaker 4: So I took my family down there to eat just
- 36:01Speaker 4: as an act of defiance. Put just something change down there, man,
- 36:07Speaker 4: all the just something change the vibe.
- 36:13Speaker 3: I am in back, so it's not your favorite anymore.
- 36:16Speaker 4: I went that one time and I was like, bye, God,
- 36:18Speaker 4: we're a Dave's family, and that's I don't want to
- 36:22Speaker 4: hear about it. And then we haven't been back. We'reund
- 36:27Speaker 4: to a new thing. Now we're around. We around the
- 36:32Speaker 4: I like the table because my kids liked they squirt
- 36:35Speaker 4: the sprite in your mouth and they throw eggs in
- 36:37Speaker 4: the air, and.
- 36:37Speaker 6: Shit, it's kompa here in Yeah, there's some of those guys.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Some of those guys get a little burned out over
- 36:44Speaker 4: time and they don't put on a show. That's me
- 36:48Speaker 4: and my kids favorite restaurant. My wife doesn't like it.
- 36:51Speaker 4: And then I I like the air Works. I like
- 36:55Speaker 4: going there. Yeah, And there's a lot of restaurants I hate.
- 37:00Speaker 2: See I've been to that. There's some other there's some
- 37:02Speaker 2: other sushi joints in our town. And after the Dave's thing,
- 37:06Speaker 2: I went to the other ones and then I was like, man,
- 37:09Speaker 2: if I'm gonna eat sushi in this time, I'm going
- 37:10Speaker 2: back to Dave's.
- 37:11Speaker 4: Damn straight with you.
- 37:15Speaker 2: I haven't, but you gotta win the lottery to go
- 37:18Speaker 2: to and I love going to guys, so I could.
- 37:22Speaker 3: I got the anniversary.
- 37:25Speaker 6: Here's the deal man that's not enjoying this local bowsman.
- 37:29Speaker 3: I got to come when you come.
- 37:32Speaker 4: I got a list of restaurants that long from there
- 37:35Speaker 4: to there that I'm actually boycott. Oh why hate him
- 37:39Speaker 4: so bad? Okay, hate them.
- 37:41Speaker 3: I'm going to one tonight, a new one. That's why
- 37:43Speaker 3: I've got this card again. On it's the only this
- 37:46Speaker 3: is the only office in the world where you could
- 37:48Speaker 3: walk in with something that's not like a meat eater
- 37:50Speaker 3: T shirt and people are like, oh, look at look
- 37:51Speaker 3: at GQ over here.
- 37:52Speaker 4: What are you going to? The Queen was teasing me
- 37:55Speaker 4: there today about my shirt. Really, he's like a little
- 37:57Speaker 4: fashion coph.
- 38:00Speaker 3: A card. Again. We're gonna go to the Bitter Root
- 38:02Speaker 3: b Stroup tonight.
- 38:03Speaker 4: You play something. Where do you get fashion advice here?
- 38:07Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll remember that. Phil. Let's let's do one more
- 38:10Speaker 3: comment here and then we go on.
- 38:12Speaker 6: Yes, this is I mean, this could be a quick
- 38:14Speaker 6: description Craig's outdoors. Could you guys explain how thermals work
- 38:18Speaker 6: and how to take them into account while hunting. Never
- 38:20Speaker 6: really understood this.
- 38:22Speaker 4: Go ahead, Yanni quick, warm.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Yeah, Phil, I don't think you did a great job
- 38:29Speaker 2: of producing this one, but I'll do it. No, no,
- 38:31Speaker 2: I can answer. But it's not a it's not it's yes.
- 38:36Speaker 4: Let me take a stab at it.
- 38:38Speaker 3: Thermals. I'm gonna go real quick.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Why don't listen, I'll do I'll explain thermals very quickly,
- 38:43Speaker 2: and then you can take them. You can explain how
- 38:46Speaker 2: to take them into account while hunting. Okay, anywhere where
- 38:50Speaker 2: you have a topography, meaning like some sort of hills, mountains,
- 38:57Speaker 2: or even just little bitty hills like ten twenty. It
- 39:01Speaker 2: doesn't work on flat ground. You need to have a
- 39:03Speaker 2: place where there's air that's going to sink when it's
- 39:07Speaker 2: cold down the side of a hill, and then when
- 39:10Speaker 2: it warms up, it's going to rise.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Okay.
- 39:13Speaker 2: So the same way that if you put your hand
- 39:15Speaker 2: over a fire, you can feel the heat well above
- 39:17Speaker 2: the fire, but if you're able to put it like
- 39:20Speaker 2: down below it or off to the side, it's not
- 39:22Speaker 2: you don't feel it quite as in the same distance.
- 39:24Speaker 2: It's because the heat's rising well, it sinks when it
- 39:28Speaker 2: gets cold too.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Okay, So.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Most days, like where I hunt in Wisconsin, if the
- 39:33Speaker 2: wind's not blowing, like in the first morning, when it's
- 39:36Speaker 2: super cold at first light, the air is sinking down
- 39:39Speaker 2: the hillsides. As the day warms, the air starts to
- 39:43Speaker 2: rise up the hillsides, and then again in the evenings,
- 39:46Speaker 2: the air cools and it's gonna sink down the hillsides. Okay,
- 39:49Speaker 2: So that is how thermals work.
- 39:52Speaker 4: Yep. I'll add a little tidbit. Cold water can drive
- 39:57Speaker 4: thermals as well. But let me back up and say this.
- 40:00Speaker 4: I think of there being I don't know if a
- 40:02Speaker 4: meteorologist would agree. I think of there being two kinds
- 40:04Speaker 4: of wind. There's wind that you go and look at
- 40:07Speaker 4: the weather forecast and it tells you the wind's coming
- 40:09Speaker 4: from the south. There's that wind, and then there's a
- 40:12Speaker 4: localized thermal wind that has to do with temperature shifts.
- 40:15Speaker 4: How do you use them? Let me give you an
- 40:16Speaker 4: extreme version. It's very common if let's let's say you're
- 40:20Speaker 4: you're bow hunting elk and you're looking at elk on
- 40:23Speaker 4: the hillside, and you know the best approach is to
- 40:25Speaker 4: come from above. It's real common to not make a
- 40:28Speaker 4: play and wait for the thermals to switch and be like,
- 40:33Speaker 4: I'm not going now because I need to come from
- 40:35Speaker 4: above and the air going is going uphill. I'm gonna wait.
- 40:39Speaker 4: The sun's gonna set, the air is going to.
- 40:41Speaker 3: No, no, you mess it up.
- 40:42Speaker 4: Am I where I'm at?
- 40:44Speaker 3: You need to come from.
- 40:45Speaker 4: Above, you know, you want to approach from above above.
- 40:48Speaker 3: And at that moment when you first seen him at
- 40:50Speaker 3: first light, the air is still sinking.
- 40:52Speaker 4: Oh no, I was in the air. I was looking
- 40:54Speaker 4: at him midday.
- 40:55Speaker 3: Oh.
- 40:55Speaker 4: Either way, you know that as the air is cooling
- 40:59Speaker 4: or when it's cold, the air is gonna be going downhill,
- 41:03Speaker 4: and when it's warm, the air is gonna be going uphill.
- 41:06Speaker 4: And you might sit and be like, we're not gonna
- 41:07Speaker 4: do anything. We're gonna lay here for three hours until
- 41:09Speaker 4: the thermals switch, at which point we'll be able to
- 41:13Speaker 4: do the approach in the way that makes sense for
- 41:15Speaker 4: the wind. And that's not what the weather man's telling you.
- 41:18Speaker 4: That's the topographical wind change. When I was saying about creeks,
- 41:22Speaker 4: you might always notice if you're in a you might
- 41:25Speaker 4: always notice if you're on a creek that has any
- 41:28Speaker 4: kind of like canyon like aspect, you might always be
- 41:30Speaker 4: like the wind is always with the current because that air,
- 41:35Speaker 4: that water is cool in that little bit of air,
- 41:38Speaker 4: and you have a little micro climb of thermal with
- 41:41Speaker 4: air coming down. So it's a good idea sometimes to
- 41:44Speaker 4: sneak up creaks because you know that there's gonna be
- 41:46Speaker 4: ever so slight downhill draft from that cool creek air.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Here's another example. One time I got busted by thermals.
- 41:56Speaker 2: I was on a north facing like deep ark timber
- 42:00Speaker 2: hillside right like, I'm freezing my my tail off sitting there,
- 42:06Speaker 2: and I'm looking at elk across the drainage that are
- 42:09Speaker 2: in a south on a south facing quaky covered hillside
- 42:13Speaker 2: that's in the sun, and i can feel the air
- 42:16Speaker 2: dropping right down to the creek below me, and I'm thinking, well,
- 42:19Speaker 2: it's just going to drop down in there and then
- 42:20Speaker 2: just gonna keep on going out. Well, what my scent
- 42:23Speaker 2: actually did was it went to the bottom and then
- 42:27Speaker 2: it caught that warm air and that was going up
- 42:30Speaker 2: the other side, and then went right up the other
- 42:32Speaker 2: side to the elk and eventually busted me.
- 42:35Speaker 4: Drives more time, still no question. It's hot tips conversation.
- 42:42Speaker 4: We talked about Poverty Pat earlier. The other day. I
- 42:44Speaker 4: was with Poverty Pat and we were looking at a
- 42:46Speaker 4: wallow and I was talking about how a fellow could
- 42:50Speaker 4: set up on that wallow, and I said, you'd want
- 42:52Speaker 4: to do two. You have to do two setups because
- 42:56Speaker 4: of the thermal Sure, a more detailed breakdown. We have
- 43:00Speaker 4: two really good articles on the meat eater dot com
- 43:03Speaker 4: Understanding Thermals in Whitetail Country from Tony Peterson and then
- 43:07Speaker 4: how to Hunt a Thermal Hub from Bomartnic. In that
- 43:10Speaker 4: thermal hub, a lot of it has to do with
- 43:12Speaker 4: hunting creek bottoms like sand and if you were if
- 43:15Speaker 4: you if you need to approach a fucked up old shitter,
- 43:18Speaker 4: you might play the thermals depending on the condition. That's
- 43:21Speaker 4: a hot tip, dude.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Mark Kenyon just interviewed, Uh, John Eberhart and oh from
- 43:29Speaker 2: Tethered Uh not Ernie, what's the what's his no? What's
- 43:33Speaker 2: what's Ernie's partner's name? Greg Godfrey? He interviewed those two
- 43:38Speaker 2: and in there they talk about thermals. On the podcast.
- 43:41Speaker 2: It's not the current episode but the one before.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Uh.
- 43:44Speaker 2: They thoroughly talk through thermals. So go listen to that.
- 43:47Speaker 4: When I first saw that question come up, I thought,
- 43:49Speaker 4: you want to know how long John's worked? Alright.
- 43:53Speaker 2: The only reason I thought it was bad films because
- 43:55Speaker 2: I knew we could talk about this for.
- 44:01Speaker 4: Yeah, a little chuckle over there.
- 44:02Speaker 3: Moving on, our next segment is one minute Fishing.
- 44:06Speaker 5: Do I feel lucky?
- 44:08Speaker 4: We'll do you dunk, Go ahead, make my cast.
- 44:15Speaker 3: One minute Fishing is where we go live to someone
- 44:17Speaker 3: who's fishing and they have one minute to catch a fish,
- 44:19Speaker 3: and if they're successful, we'll make a five hundred dollars
- 44:22Speaker 3: donation to a conservation group. This week, our angler is
- 44:26Speaker 3: doctor Randall Williams, who's at the Meat Eater office pond today.
- 44:30Speaker 3: Doctor Randall is fishing for a donation to TRCP. Steve,
- 44:35Speaker 3: what are you seeing there?
- 44:35Speaker 4: When you look at the camera, I see that I
- 44:39Speaker 4: see a homeless guy out by that pond or the
- 44:41Speaker 4: Cleveland shirt on. So wherever he came from Ohio state? Sorry,
- 44:47Speaker 4: wherever he came from it was Ohio?
- 44:49Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, Randal, give us a scouting report on the
- 44:52Speaker 3: office pond.
- 44:53Speaker 4: Have you made a cast yet?
- 44:56Speaker 10: I made a few half hearted casts about twenty five
- 44:59Speaker 10: minutes ago, and since then we've just been.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Trying to keep our hands warm.
- 45:04Speaker 10: There's a good breeze coming in from the west, maybe
- 45:07Speaker 10: gusting up to fifteen miles an hour or so, so
- 45:09Speaker 10: I apologize in advance. If Corey's hands are shaking because
- 45:12Speaker 10: we're rather chilly.
- 45:13Speaker 6: Cold, that's fine. The connection is not great anyway. Do
- 45:16Speaker 6: whatever you want.
- 45:17Speaker 3: And what's your tactic today, Randall? To be successful in
- 45:20Speaker 3: one minute?
- 45:22Speaker 10: Well, I've got a number four panther Martin with a.
- 45:26Speaker 4: Yellow body red spots.
- 45:28Speaker 10: I believe it's been featured on this very segment in
- 45:31Speaker 10: previous episodes, and I'm gonna give it about two casts.
- 45:34Speaker 10: I'm gonna go one to the left, one to the right,
- 45:36Speaker 10: and just see what happens.
- 45:38Speaker 4: I don't have much confidence, Steve.
- 45:40Speaker 3: What would you do if you were out there trying
- 45:41Speaker 3: to catch a fish in one minute?
- 45:43Speaker 4: Same thing. I'd take a big old fat lee for
- 45:46Speaker 4: him and put about twenty inches below bobber and huck
- 45:49Speaker 4: that out and just have you start the clock.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Okay, all right, doctor Randall, Your time starts when you
- 45:55Speaker 3: make your first cast.
- 45:56Speaker 4: Go ahead, let's do this. What if he has a
- 46:03Speaker 4: license would be funny if you got like of citation.
- 46:07Speaker 3: We had someone from the production side of the company
- 46:10Speaker 3: do this a couple of weeks ago, and I asked
- 46:12Speaker 3: them beforehand and said, do you have a fishing license?
- 46:14Speaker 4: And they did. They didn't see it.
- 46:17Speaker 3: The first one got hung in the trees. No, Well,
- 46:20Speaker 3: the good news is you have forty five seconds to
- 46:23Speaker 3: figure it out.
- 46:24Speaker 4: You know what it ought to be. If they don't catch,
- 46:27Speaker 4: they pay five hundred bucks. If they do catch, we
- 46:31Speaker 4: pay five hundred bucks.
- 46:32Speaker 3: The opposite thing will happen where right now, we have
- 46:34Speaker 3: a lot of people volunteering to do this segment. The
- 46:38Speaker 3: other version. I don't think we'll have anyone. What's going
- 46:41Speaker 3: on over there? Come on, Randall, let's go. You have
- 46:48Speaker 3: fifteen seconds to go.
- 46:51Speaker 4: Is still in the tree? Why is he looking at us?
- 46:58Speaker 3: Five seconds?
- 46:59Speaker 6: R man, I wish we weren't.
- 47:05Speaker 3: It did not have today, Randall, tell us about what
- 47:10Speaker 3: happened on that first cast.
- 47:11Speaker 6: Oh, he's on the ground.
- 47:13Speaker 10: Well, previously, previously i'd mentioned that there's a very strong
- 47:17Speaker 10: breeze coming across the pond, and I went to chuck
- 47:21Speaker 10: it past that tree, bring it right under there. A
- 47:24Speaker 10: bit of a moonball cast must have caught a cross
- 47:27Speaker 10: breeze and then got hung up about twenty feet in
- 47:30Speaker 10: the tree. I I really, I'm surprised that it came
- 47:33Speaker 10: out shocking to me. Really, I thought this was going
- 47:36Speaker 10: to be a giant failure. Instead it was just sort
- 47:38Speaker 10: of on par with all the other failures.
- 47:43Speaker 3: We have yet to have someone be successful doing one
- 47:46Speaker 3: minute fishing at the office pond.
- 47:49Speaker 4: Oh, I'll get in there.
- 47:50Speaker 3: Okay, we'll do it, Steve, before that thing freeze over.
- 47:54Speaker 4: Because I've seen tracks cutting across it.
- 47:57Speaker 3: We're running out of time, so before the freeze happens,
- 48:00Speaker 3: someone needs to be successful for one minute fishing. I'd
- 48:05Speaker 3: like to tell you well done, but I'm not going
- 48:07Speaker 3: to insult you and our listeners. So we'll try this
- 48:10Speaker 3: against some.
- 48:10Speaker 4: Other Randall, does it seem my gud just go out
- 48:12Speaker 4: there with a worm and a bobber and win.
- 48:15Speaker 10: I mean that was my That was what I'd hope
- 48:18Speaker 10: to do, but you know, I just didn't come prepared today.
- 48:21Speaker 10: Sort of the last minute deal.
- 48:22Speaker 4: So well, don't do that. That's what I'm gonna do
- 48:24Speaker 4: your pocket.
- 48:25Speaker 10: Yeah, I think you do well.
- 48:27Speaker 3: Last thing, Randal, before we get out of here, we
- 48:29Speaker 3: had someone Leland Nlly pipe in and say that Randal
- 48:34Speaker 3: can be on the cover of the calendar for fed
- 48:36Speaker 3: up Old Fishermen. Oh oh, I've got some.
- 48:40Speaker 10: I've got some real beauties in my back archives of
- 48:43Speaker 10: me as a fucked up old fisherman.
- 48:45Speaker 4: So okay, believe me.
- 48:47Speaker 10: I think we could make a nice composite for the cover.
- 48:49Speaker 3: Thank you, Randal, Thank you Corey.
- 48:52Speaker 4: All right.
- 48:53Speaker 3: Our next segment is Throwback Thursday. Go back on a Thursday.
- 49:00Speaker 6: Stephen Rody take me back in nineteen seventy foot.
- 49:08Speaker 3: Believe and I mentioned Stephen Rody old.
- 49:12Speaker 4: As shit.
- 49:16Speaker 3: Dude.
- 49:16Speaker 4: I saw, I saw twice I'm talking about.
- 49:21Speaker 3: That's that little tune from Phil really tickled Steve in
- 49:25Speaker 3: a way that I don't think I've ever seen.
- 49:26Speaker 4: Like I said, man, I could if I had, if
- 49:28Speaker 4: you had an hour, I would start telling you about
- 49:30Speaker 4: Gordon Lightfoot.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Okay, next episode, Throwback Thursday, is where we look at
- 49:35Speaker 3: old hunting and fishing pictures of the crew. Yanni, You're
- 49:38Speaker 3: going first, and if you are on our YouTube audience,
- 49:41Speaker 3: either live or watching this in the future, you will
- 49:44Speaker 3: get to see these photos that we're looking at. All right, Yanni,
- 49:49Speaker 3: what are we seeing here?
- 49:51Speaker 1: What.
- 49:52Speaker 3: You guys can see what it is. But I want
- 49:55Speaker 3: you guys to guess the year is that you assoom
- 50:00Speaker 3: in there a little bit.
- 50:02Speaker 4: It is me.
- 50:03Speaker 3: I didn't bring a picture of somebody else. I'm gonna
- 50:07Speaker 3: guess this is the year nineteen ninety one.
- 50:11Speaker 4: No, okay, what is it?
- 50:13Speaker 3: I was born in seventy eight. Okay, Steve's got the
- 50:19Speaker 3: advantage of math on his side here.
- 50:21Speaker 4: It's like two thousand. Oh, okay, what year was it?
- 50:24Speaker 2: Ninety seven? Steve wins he's the closest. But yeah, it
- 50:29Speaker 2: was my first hunting trip out west. My dad took
- 50:32Speaker 2: me out to Wyoming. I think we were out by Gillette,
- 50:36Speaker 2: and we were with some other Latvian fellas. They had
- 50:39Speaker 2: done this hunt quite a few times, and uh yeah,
- 50:44Speaker 2: I remember we drove out in a like an eighty
- 50:46Speaker 2: seven Chevy Blazer, and we had it set up where
- 50:49Speaker 2: you could sleep in the back, so while one guy drove,
- 50:52Speaker 2: the other guy could lay down and sleep in the back.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Not very safe, you know, but we got it done.
- 51:00Speaker 2: Cool thing about this particular hunt is that we did
- 51:04Speaker 2: kind of a soft push on these prong horn to
- 51:07Speaker 2: get him to move by us. And I was actually
- 51:09Speaker 2: being sort of semi guided by a fellow that unfortunately
- 51:12Speaker 2: is no longer with us, Pete silton Man's just passed
- 51:16Speaker 2: in the last year, and he was one of the
- 51:18Speaker 2: landowners up there in Wisconsin where I hunt, and he
- 51:22Speaker 2: was right with me. He set me up and we
- 51:26Speaker 2: I think I got prone. I think I had a bipod.
- 51:28Speaker 2: There's a bipod on that rifle, isn't there?
- 51:30Speaker 3: It looks like it.
- 51:31Speaker 4: And I was back and everybody had a hairs biped.
- 51:33Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's what that is on that rifle, the
- 51:35Speaker 3: springs on their Yeah, yeah, well it works out perfect.
- 51:40Speaker 3: We're sitting there, Prone said. I mean, we were just
- 51:43Speaker 3: in some sage and the whole herd comes by it
- 51:46Speaker 3: like one hundred, one hundred and fifty yards, you know,
- 51:48Speaker 3: And finally this buck is there, and.
- 51:50Speaker 2: He's like, all right, shoot him.
- 51:51Speaker 3: Okay.
- 51:52Speaker 2: I flipped the safety click. I hadn't chambered one, and
- 51:58Speaker 2: so A chambered one and then shot the buck. But
- 52:01Speaker 2: there was a few moments there where I don't know
- 52:04Speaker 2: exactly what Pete was saying behind me, but he got
- 52:07Speaker 2: quite flustered with me that I hadn't didn't have a
- 52:09Speaker 2: round in the gun.
- 52:11Speaker 3: And What I really love is it looks like you're
- 52:13Speaker 3: wearing mass Yoke bottom land. Oh hell yeah. Did you
- 52:17Speaker 3: have a lot of that back in your day?
- 52:18Speaker 2: No, no, it was I wasn't into it enough to
- 52:22Speaker 2: know that that was Massiolk bottom lands. It was a
- 52:25Speaker 2: shirt that I think my dad had grown out of.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Is along with those pants. I still own those pants
- 52:32Speaker 2: and I can still fit into those pants. Oh so
- 52:35Speaker 2: I was nineteen then I can still. I still have
- 52:38Speaker 2: those pants there. They're Winchester brush pants and they have
- 52:41Speaker 2: this very shiny, loud nylon on the front of the chap.
- 52:46Speaker 2: I guess of them, but I still have those. They
- 52:48Speaker 2: sit in a drawer every now and then I put
- 52:50Speaker 2: them on. I don't know for why, but yeah, that
- 52:57Speaker 2: was before I got contacts too, when I still wore
- 52:59Speaker 2: glasses every day.
- 53:00Speaker 3: That looks like an aniloe punting picture from nineteen ninety seven.
- 53:03Speaker 3: Sure does, all right, Next one, I'll go next.
- 53:10Speaker 4: This is a big old bot in South Dakota. I
- 53:16Speaker 4: found it floating dead on the beach I was. I
- 53:19Speaker 4: was a sophomore in college.
- 53:20Speaker 3: I killed that buck on some public land on a
- 53:23Speaker 3: near a big body of water. Has a Harris bipod
- 53:27Speaker 3: on there as well. I did have one. I don't
- 53:29Speaker 3: know if that one was a Harris bipod or not.
- 53:31Speaker 3: But here's here's what I'll always remember about that haunt
- 53:34Speaker 3: more than that mule. That morning before sunrise, in my headlight,
- 53:39Speaker 3: I saw an Eastern spotted skunk. Now, if you don't know,
- 53:42Speaker 3: those are super rare, and like South Dakota is at
- 53:45Speaker 3: the very edge of their habitat. Many states have them
- 53:48Speaker 3: listed is threatened or vulnerable. And a cool thing about
- 53:51Speaker 3: the spotted skunks is that game agencies rely on trappers
- 53:54Speaker 3: to track their population. Steve yann Erie Boy is familiar
- 53:57Speaker 3: with like an Eastern spotted skunk? Oh yeah, I am, yeah,
- 54:00Speaker 3: never caught one, and I looked this up shortly after
- 54:04Speaker 3: I had saw him. In Missouri, for example, spotted skunk
- 54:07Speaker 3: populations plummeted by ninety nine percent from the nineteen fifties
- 54:11Speaker 3: to the nineteen eighties. In Minnesota, there were twenty thousand
- 54:15Speaker 3: spotted skunks harvested in nineteen forty six. By nineteen sixty
- 54:20Speaker 3: five it was less than one thousand, and in nineteen
- 54:23Speaker 3: ninety two it was just four. So their populations have
- 54:26Speaker 3: crashed and I didn't exactly know what I was looking
- 54:28Speaker 3: at when I saw that spotted skunk. My dad was
- 54:31Speaker 3: with me, and he had said, that's a SIV cat.
- 54:33Speaker 3: Did you hear them called? Yeah, civid cat a cat.
- 54:37Speaker 3: He was a big trapper, so he was also tickled
- 54:40Speaker 3: to see that spotted skunk. Now, unlike stripe skunks, strip
- 54:44Speaker 3: skunks have done a great job of adapting to cattle
- 54:46Speaker 3: and crops and humans, spotted skunks have not. They need
- 54:50Speaker 3: old growth pine and oak forests for their protection, so
- 54:55Speaker 3: they have the right food. And the cool thing about
- 54:58Speaker 3: them is it's like very cartoony, but they do a
- 55:00Speaker 3: handstand when they're gonna spray, and that's how they aim
- 55:04Speaker 3: their spray or to hit their target if they feel threatened,
- 55:07Speaker 3: so they do a little handstand, aim their butt right
- 55:10Speaker 3: at you, and that's how they hit you on like
- 55:12Speaker 3: a stripe skunk which would just turn around and spray you.
- 55:14Speaker 3: And Phil now has a map.
- 55:16Speaker 4: He showed a picture, but then talked about something besides
- 55:18Speaker 4: the picture.
- 55:19Speaker 3: I'm telling you, when I look at that photo, what
- 55:21Speaker 3: I think of is seeing that stripe that spotted skunk,
- 55:23Speaker 3: Because it was that morning, a few hours before I
- 55:25Speaker 3: killed that buck, I saw that spotted skunk. So that's
- 55:28Speaker 3: what I always think of when I think of that haunter,
- 55:30Speaker 3: think of that deer, think of that picture.
- 55:32Speaker 4: It would be like if I showed you this calendar
- 55:34Speaker 4: and started talking about my computer.
- 55:35Speaker 3: Uh huh, hey, you could do that. I'm sure you
- 55:38Speaker 3: have some memories that that are of your computer when
- 55:41Speaker 3: you look at that calendar. Phil has a a map
- 55:45Speaker 3: book that spotted skunk distribution that shows you how many
- 55:49Speaker 3: times they've been recorded from the year two thousand to
- 55:52Speaker 3: the year twenty twenty.
- 55:54Speaker 4: It's got to be a path like a pathological like,
- 55:56Speaker 4: there's a pathology thing. What do you mean, Are you
- 56:00Speaker 4: sure it's not some kind of virus.
- 56:02Speaker 3: Or habitat loss. I was looking this up last night.
- 56:05Speaker 4: Yeah, just that.
- 56:06Speaker 3: I'm sure there's other things, like they probably have some
- 56:10Speaker 3: food disappear, but they just they're not as adaptable as
- 56:13Speaker 3: other small man.
- 56:14Speaker 4: So you have like the spread of raccoons and possums
- 56:17Speaker 4: going in the other direction. I just have a hard
- 56:19Speaker 4: time believing that it could be habitat and not some
- 56:23Speaker 4: kind of pathological or competition.
- 56:25Speaker 3: Is I'll send you the articles I read. They were adamant,
- 56:28Speaker 3: adamant that it is about the habitat loss.
- 56:31Speaker 2: So if you look at that map where the greater
- 56:34Speaker 2: occurrences are, it is in some pretty rough country right
- 56:39Speaker 2: like along the ridge of the apple Acians, and then
- 56:43Speaker 2: in that eastern South Dakota region and then in the Ozarks.
- 56:47Speaker 2: Right that's the Ozarks I'm looking at.
- 56:49Speaker 3: Probably the only spotted skunk I'll ever see was. I
- 56:52Speaker 3: was thrilled to have that sighting, an encounter, one of
- 56:55Speaker 3: those see if your next let's let's see your photo
- 56:59Speaker 3: for throwback there say.
- 57:02Speaker 4: Well, so this is at my house where I grew up.
- 57:05Speaker 4: My mom still lives there. The guy down the shore,
- 57:09Speaker 4: so from lookers left down the shore was an old timer,
- 57:14Speaker 4: John Gary. And John Gary was kind of one of
- 57:18Speaker 4: my main fishing mentors when I was a little kid.
- 57:20Speaker 4: He was a World War two guy like my dad.
- 57:23Speaker 4: He he kept he would keep track of every book
- 57:26Speaker 4: he read on in a journal, and he keep track
- 57:28Speaker 4: of how much he fished on a journal. And he
- 57:30Speaker 4: fished two hundred and fifty days a year. But he
- 57:32Speaker 4: lived by himself, which raises the question how do you
- 57:35Speaker 4: eat all those fish? Because he didn't throw any kind
- 57:38Speaker 4: of fish back. Huh, Well, he's he's gone. Now, all
- 57:43Speaker 4: the players are gone. Here, I'm gonna commit. I'm gonna
- 57:45Speaker 4: admit to a series of crimes.
- 57:47Speaker 3: Could you describe the photo first? For people who are
- 57:49Speaker 3: just listening.
- 57:49Speaker 4: I'm holding up to snap, I'm holding up to ten
- 57:51Speaker 4: pounds snap turtles.
- 57:52Speaker 3: What year is this?
- 57:53Speaker 4: I was in high school. It's like it's like ninety
- 57:57Speaker 4: nineteen ninety. So John Gary explains to me, aardy kind
- 58:06Speaker 4: of knew it. But one time he told me he
- 58:08Speaker 4: made introduction. He was selling his fish to a fish market.
- 58:12Speaker 4: And I remember when he told me the story. He
- 58:13Speaker 4: told me, when you're buying something from blank fish market,
- 58:19Speaker 4: he's got his thumb on the scale. Oh, he said,
- 58:23Speaker 4: when you're selling something to blank fish market, he's got
- 58:27Speaker 4: a finger under the scale, but it ain't his thumb. Yeah.
- 58:32Speaker 4: And he went like that for you people at home,
- 58:35Speaker 4: I'm raising my middle finger up Michigan Hello.
- 58:37Speaker 3: But that's not the nice Michigan hud.
- 58:39Speaker 4: So John Gary turned me on to this scamm he
- 58:45Speaker 4: had going. We went out and dipped. One time he
- 58:48Speaker 4: went out and dipped forty gallons of smell and that
- 58:51Speaker 4: was a crime. No, okay, smelt season. Tell me when
- 58:55Speaker 4: we get to the crimea what happened. As soon as
- 58:57Speaker 4: we dipped him, I sold him to the guy bucket gallon,
- 59:02Speaker 4: which were like, we went out smell dipping burn burned
- 59:05Speaker 4: a bunch of gasket into pent water, and all of
- 59:08Speaker 4: a sudden we sold forty gallons of smell for a
- 59:12Speaker 4: bucket gallon. That's illegal, Okay, We're like dumb rednecks. So
- 59:19Speaker 4: he then the guy says, well, here's what else I'm
- 59:22Speaker 4: looking for, and he wanted snapping turtles. You could get
- 59:25Speaker 4: a commercial license at that time for turtles for like
- 59:28Speaker 4: next to nothing. I just figured that since you could
- 59:30Speaker 4: get a commercial license, it must be okay. So I
- 59:33Speaker 4: set the trap in turtles big time.
- 59:35Speaker 3: How'd you trap them?
- 59:36Speaker 4: I've made my own cage traps out of hogwire i'd
- 59:40Speaker 4: make I'd make traps double doors, sometimes sometimes single door.
- 59:46Speaker 4: I'd bait them with you guessed it, John Gary's fish heads.
- 59:51Speaker 4: John Garrett Freeze all of his small mouthheads. I would
- 59:54Speaker 4: take the small mouth heads. I'd bait turtle traps. And
- 59:56Speaker 4: I started trapped turtles like a mofo. And this I
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: was buying them for me A buck of pound dressed
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: the turtle. YEP. So all I had to do was
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: he wanted everything attached to the plaster, and he wanted
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: everything attached to the lower shell. He wanted the top
- 1:00:13Speaker 4: shell and the guts gone.
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: So if you had a ten pound turtle, what did
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: he weigh after he was dressed?
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: You know what it wound up being. I can't remember
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: what he paid me, but it wound up being the
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: turtles worth about ten bucks. Yeah, I can't remember. I
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: feel like I was gonna say a buck of pound,
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: but a turtle is about ten bucks. But I had
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: some giant turtles. I caught a thirty pounder one time,
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: but I sold that to a different guy. But yeah,
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: I was just law breaking. The thing is, I never
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: would have gotten a Lacey Act violation because it was
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: all in state. Terrible.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: What did these guys do with the turtles?
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: They just he would sell anything. He would buy anything
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: on the black market that he could have a play
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: ausible explanation for how he got it. So you had
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: tribal in the Great Lakes, you had tribal fisheries for walleye,
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: You had tribal fisheries for yellow perch, you had tribal fisheries.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: He could buy bluegill from aquaculture places. He could buy
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: snapping turtle from aquaculture places. So he'd buy anything that
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: he could have and it wouldn't be crazy that he
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: had it. He wasn't going to buy largemouth bass flays
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: off because people like, where the hell did you get
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: large mouth bass plays from? Okay, So what year was
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: that photo? You think ninety ninety ninety one?
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: Head to YouTube you'll want to see. I love that
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: picture of Steve. He he didn't he.
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: Cut say one last little tidbit. We had a big
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: storage if you go down from there like lookers nutsack
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: like down below the picture. We have this storage area
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: that my dad made us build one summer out of
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: out of block and I used to when I catch turtles,
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: I'd put him in there until I had a bunch
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: to clean them. And one time my mom left the
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: door open for turtles everywhere, like a lot of them
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: made a break for it and got into lake and
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: there was turtles that just went the wrong direction. But
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: it was surprising how well those turtles never haven't been there,
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: new downhill gone.
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: You know, did you catch other kinds of turtles doing
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: this too?
- 1:02:11Speaker 9: No?
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: Only snappers? Man, You know, I could get all kinds
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: of turtles in there. No, and it was really good,
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: like it was lights out, like season would open June fifteenth.
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: It was lights out for a month later Michigan went
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: and changed to opening a turtle to July fifteen, which
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: sits now. It's hard. It's hard to catch a turtle
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: from mid July on it's lights out June fifteen.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: Yeah, if you're listening to this, you'll want a head
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: to YouTube. You can see Steve's photo from nineteen ninety
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: when he was a criminal, my picture from college in
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: twenty twelve, and Yanni's Annalo punting picture from nineteen nine.
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: Can I say one last thing about John Gary? Last thing?
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: After I sold my first book, I felt like I
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: was loaded and I was over at John Gary's. He
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: was old and John Gary made a deal with me,
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: and I didn't take it seriously, but it was a
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: serious deal. We're sitting in his house and he said,
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: I will sell you this house and everything inside of
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: this house down to my shoes, for seventy five thousand dollars.
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: The deal is I keep it till I'm dead. And
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: he was serious because he wanted money to be able
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: to travel how long did you think about this offer
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: a bit? But I didn't think about it seriously enough.
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: Then later he passed his away in the house sells
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: for seven hundred thousand dollars. Several hundred thousand dollars is
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: on the beach. Yeah, could have been. I remember that detail,
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: right down to my shoes and he pointed to his shoes.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: You could have had his shoes, everything, seventy five grand.
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: He wanted it in cash, all right. That was throwback Thursday.
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: Moving on.
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: Joining us on the line last is Mitchell Black, a
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: journalist from the Post and Courier newspaper. He's been covering
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: the story of how forty three female monkeys escaped a
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: research facility in South Carolina. Mitchell, welcome to the show.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: Hey, how you doing. Thanks for having me doing good.
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: First thing, tell us about the facility that these monkeys
- 1:03:58Speaker 3: escaped from.
- 1:04:00Speaker 9: Sure, so, Alpha Genesis. It's a primate breeding and research
- 1:04:04Speaker 9: facility in MSSE, South Carolina. And if you don't know
- 1:04:08Speaker 9: where air that at is, that is sort of on
- 1:04:10Speaker 9: the southeastern corner of the state what a lot of
- 1:04:13Speaker 9: people might think of as a murdic country. And so
- 1:04:17Speaker 9: this facility they primarily breed monkeys to be sold to
- 1:04:22Speaker 9: the government into private companies for testing, and they also
- 1:04:25Speaker 9: perform tests themselves.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: They have a few.
- 1:04:29Speaker 9: Different locations around the low Country and the MSc themsel itself.
- 1:04:35Speaker 9: They've got close to seven thousand monkeys. The town has
- 1:04:39Speaker 9: a thousand people, so it's like a six to one
- 1:04:44Speaker 9: monkey to town person ratio.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: Over there.
- 1:04:50Speaker 9: So you know, a lot out of the monkeys in
- 1:04:52Speaker 9: that facility and you know people can see them from
- 1:04:55Speaker 9: the road and k ages. It's part of living in
- 1:04:59Speaker 9: ms is having the these monkeys around.
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: And what purpose do these monkeys serve?
- 1:05:05Speaker 9: So it's a little bit they the facility is contracted
- 1:05:10Speaker 9: for breeding, so you know, these monkeys are bred and
- 1:05:14Speaker 9: that and so old to do different companies and the
- 1:05:17Speaker 9: government for science and testing. And then they also perform
- 1:05:22Speaker 9: some research on them themselves. And you know, if you
- 1:05:26Speaker 9: look at at some of the work that company has done,
- 1:05:28Speaker 9: you know they talk about outfit they use the monkeys
- 1:05:31Speaker 9: for studies in vaccine development, therapeutic drug therapies, and.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Some surgical procedures.
- 1:05:38Speaker 9: You know, we're still looking to learn a little bit
- 1:05:39Speaker 9: more about the specifics there. You know, one important thing
- 1:05:44Speaker 9: to note is that you know these monkeys. Per their CEO,
- 1:05:49Speaker 9: they're juveniles, so there are too young to be tested on,
- 1:05:55Speaker 9: which is one of the reasons that they say that,
- 1:05:57Speaker 9: you know, people shouldn't be all that scared, but they
- 1:06:00Speaker 9: should still steer clear because you know, monkeys can be
- 1:06:03Speaker 9: skittish and they'll just scamper off in the trees if
- 1:06:05Speaker 9: you end up, you know, trying to give it a
- 1:06:06Speaker 9: big old hug.
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: All right, tell us about the escape. How did it
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: come to be that forty three monkeys got loose in town?
- 1:06:14Speaker 9: Sure, so it was in the middle of the day,
- 1:06:17Speaker 9: the day after election day and so, you know, well
- 1:06:22Speaker 9: people are still learning about what the results are of
- 1:06:26Speaker 9: the election. A caretaker went into a facility, into the
- 1:06:31Speaker 9: facility in ym See, and they were cleaning their enclosure,
- 1:06:37Speaker 9: and they left the doors unsecured, and there was a
- 1:06:40Speaker 9: jail break. Forty three monkeys out the door, and a
- 1:06:45Speaker 9: lot lot of them have been hanging out in the
- 1:06:49Speaker 9: area right by the facility. But you know, there were
- 1:06:52Speaker 9: some reports of a monkey five miles down the road
- 1:06:57Speaker 9: a few days into. It took a few days for
- 1:07:03Speaker 9: the facility to start to bring the monkeys back into
- 1:07:06Speaker 9: the fold because it was raining down here.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: And the monkey's kind of hunkered down in the trees.
- 1:07:10Speaker 9: That made it difficult for them to catch, you know,
- 1:07:13Speaker 9: because they're just didn't want to get wet.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: And how how many have they caught so far? Then,
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: it's been it's been about ten days or so since
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: it's happened.
- 1:07:20Speaker 9: It's been it's been, yeah, it's been eight days. And
- 1:07:24Speaker 9: so they've caught they've caught thirty five monkeys. There's still
- 1:07:28Speaker 9: eight that are on the loose, and uh, you know,
- 1:07:33Speaker 9: trying to learn about where exactly the os aar. I'm
- 1:07:37Speaker 9: not sure or if they're or by the facility or
- 1:07:40Speaker 9: if they're elsewhere, but residents are instructed to, uh, you know,
- 1:07:45Speaker 9: call the police.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: If they have a monkey sighting.
- 1:07:49Speaker 9: And you know, as a reporter, we're all always started
- 1:07:51Speaker 9: of looking at different announcements from the police department and
- 1:07:54Speaker 9: police reports, and you know, you see things like traffic
- 1:07:57Speaker 9: accident okay, you know, if there's a break in okay. Uh,
- 1:08:01Speaker 9: and so you know, we're looking and we get an
- 1:08:04Speaker 9: email it's from one of the local lawenforcement agencies a
- 1:08:07Speaker 9: week or so ago. It's like, you know, all these
- 1:08:09Speaker 9: monkeys that have been broken out of the cilion, Well
- 1:08:11Speaker 9: you know that's a story. So you know, we start
- 1:08:13Speaker 9: making calls and you know, here we are a week
- 1:08:15Speaker 9: or so later.
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: Is the climate suitable for those monkeys? Like? Is it
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: plausible that if you just left them alone that they
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: would find not only the right temperatures but food sources
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: and you know what I mean, like, could you feasibly
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: have a feral population of monkeys in this area?
- 1:08:37Speaker 9: Well, so there is a there is an island where
- 1:08:42Speaker 9: a lot of these monkeys live just off the coast there.
- 1:08:49Speaker 9: What I'll say is that these monkeys there, so there
- 1:08:52Speaker 9: are resus macaques and they're typically found in South Asia,
- 1:08:56Speaker 9: but they have been living in captivity so uh and
- 1:09:00Speaker 9: you know.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Have been dependent on people eating them.
- 1:09:03Speaker 9: So uh, it's hard to say whether or they could
- 1:09:07Speaker 9: just simply exist in the wild, you know, given that, uh,
- 1:09:13Speaker 9: you know they a bit in living in cages for
- 1:09:16Speaker 9: most of their life.
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: Yeah, but I mean outside of these individual monkeys particular
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: skill sets, what I mean is is the climate in
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: South Carolina suitable for the monkeys or are they freezing
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: their asses right now?
- 1:09:28Speaker 9: Well? Right now, right now it's pretty warm, but it's
- 1:09:30Speaker 9: gonna it's getting colder. Or at night, you know, uh so, uh,
- 1:09:37Speaker 9: it's still pretty warm right now. I don't own you know,
- 1:09:43Speaker 9: in terms of like me walking around, it's not not
- 1:09:46Speaker 9: quite at you know, mitches freezing at his ass off
- 1:09:48Speaker 9: temperature yet, so you know, trying to not not completely
- 1:09:58Speaker 9: sure if they are you know, how they are going
- 1:10:03Speaker 9: to do in colder temperatures, but you know that that's
- 1:10:05Speaker 9: another good question, all right.
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: And just a second, Mitchell is going to tell us
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: about how they have captured thirty five of the forty
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: three monkeys. But Steve, you're a trapper. If you were
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: tasked with catching these forty three monkeys, how would you
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: do it?
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: Oh? Man, I got no idea. I don't know enough
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: about them. Where would you start though?
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: What do you think? Live traps?
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: I imagine, yeah, live traps and maybe Mercer Longes bobcat cages.
- 1:10:32Speaker 4: And then you'd have to put the mechanism you could
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: figure that a little sucker in there with his fingers.
- 1:10:37Speaker 9: Huh.
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: You'd have to put the trigger mechanism up against some wall. Okay,
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: so he can't fiddle with that, But yeah, I don't.
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: I'm not that into monkeys, to be honest with.
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: You, Mitchell, how are they doing and how have they
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: caught the thirty five monkeys so far.
- 1:10:51Speaker 9: Yeah, So they're they're using these traps that are called
- 1:10:55Speaker 9: have a heart trap. So they are one of these
- 1:10:58Speaker 9: things where if you think of like a cage that
- 1:11:00Speaker 9: has an opening enclosure and then sort of swinging door
- 1:11:04Speaker 9: where and they have food on the other side, the
- 1:11:06Speaker 9: monkey walks into the cage, tries to get the food,
- 1:11:08Speaker 9: door swings closed, and that that's what they are using.
- 1:11:12Speaker 9: The other part part of it is that a lot
- 1:11:14Speaker 9: of the monkeys are around the facility and they're just
- 1:11:17Speaker 9: kind of.
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: Hoping that they return home. You know, there was actually
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: another estate. Yeah, there's another I really need to do it.
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: He's like, I want to get back to that place
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: where they're going to experiment out of me. Huh, And
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: I got to live in that little box.
- 1:11:34Speaker 9: There are a lot of people who are waiting in here,
- 1:11:37Speaker 9: and it's not uncommon to see on social media people
- 1:11:40Speaker 9: saying let them be free.
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: But this facility has a history of similar incidents, right.
- 1:11:48Speaker 9: Yeah, So there was another split, if you will, in
- 1:11:53Speaker 9: twenty sixteen when nineteen monkeys escaped from the facility, but
- 1:11:57Speaker 9: they returned home six hours later. Twenty six monkeys left
- 1:12:01Speaker 9: the facility also in twenty fourteen and actually earlier this year,
- 1:12:06Speaker 9: not related to this facility, but you know a few
- 1:12:08Speaker 9: miles up the road, there was a monkey who's someone's
- 1:12:14Speaker 9: pet who got out and was wandering around the streets
- 1:12:16Speaker 9: of Walterborough, which is in the area in Carlton County,
- 1:12:21Speaker 9: and so that led to a multiple o day.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: Monkey hunt.
- 1:12:28Speaker 9: Or you know, they were not trying to kill the monkey,
- 1:12:31Speaker 9: of course, but attempt to try to bring the monkey
- 1:12:36Speaker 9: back to its owners. So there's been a lot a
- 1:12:39Speaker 9: lot of monkey he escapes down here. You know, a
- 1:12:43Speaker 9: lot of monkey coverage going on.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: All right, last question here, Mitchell, what is the community's
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: added toward told the toward the whole thing.
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: Are they angry?
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: Are they amused? Are they scared?
- 1:12:53Speaker 9: So, you know, there are some people who live in
- 1:12:59Speaker 9: places where they've got like a cap who comes into
- 1:13:02Speaker 9: their backyard, you know, or you know, in some other
- 1:13:04Speaker 9: places they'll have.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: Like deer or bears. That's sort of the attitude.
- 1:13:09Speaker 9: And you know, in the deer the bear, they come
- 1:13:11Speaker 9: in and you know, you sort of get used to
- 1:13:13Speaker 9: seeing them. That's sort of the attitude that locals have
- 1:13:17Speaker 9: about out these monkeys, like it's not amen for people
- 1:13:21Speaker 9: to say like, oh, I saw them in a tree.
- 1:13:23Speaker 9: Oh there was a few years back where I saw
- 1:13:25Speaker 9: a monkey sort of trapes them through my yard, and
- 1:13:29Speaker 9: so there there's a little bit of amusemusement, but also frankly, uh,
- 1:13:33Speaker 9: you know, this is a small town and it's a
- 1:13:35Speaker 9: big facility, and so it does a lot to contribute
- 1:13:40Speaker 9: to the economy.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: So there's a little little bit of an amusement.
- 1:13:44Speaker 9: But you know, there, I wouldn't say that a lot
- 1:13:47Speaker 9: of the anger that we've heard, which are you know,
- 1:13:49Speaker 9: typically coming from animal rights organizations, that's not as much
- 1:13:54Speaker 9: coming from the locals.
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: That we've spoken to.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: A right Mitchell. You can follow his coverage on the
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: Post in Courier newspaper.
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: Thank you for joining.
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: Thanks Mitchell.
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: I tell you what if my kids caught one of
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: those monkeys and I told them what was gonna happen
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: to that monkey if we brought it back home, that
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: monkey's come and live with us. There's no way the
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: pet monkeys.
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: Oh yeah, there's no way that we guys on the
- 1:14:18Speaker 3: podcast talk to somebody about monkey facilities.
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: Yeah, because there was they're trying to open more of
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: these monkey breeding farms.
- 1:14:25Speaker 3: Uh huh and locals.
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: That's the that's the main thing I'm thinking about right now,
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: because this is a hot issue in Florida. Is that
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: was that what this was happening Carolina.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: But there's Georgia.
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: That's where they're trying to open anyways, they're they're trying
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: to make because there's a real shortage of these research monkeys,
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: so they're trying to open new monkey farms, and locals
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: are pissed. Yeah, and now the locals are going to
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: be able to use this sure right and turn around
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: and be like, such as what's going on over there?
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: That's what we're talking about. We don't want that.
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: That's a level of nimby not in my backyard that
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: I'd be comfortable with.
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: That's a mimby. I don't need a monkey in my backyard.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: There you go, Really you're really worried about, like, what's
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: gonna happen?
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: Worried? They just said they just go right back to
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: the facility after a week.
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: I'd rather be in Texas. It's a good spot for it. Yeah.
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: I don't know, man, I don't know. If my neighbor
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: was raising monkeys, I don't know. I'd hope they got
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: away all right.
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: That brings us'd be like one of his monkeys in
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: my yard. That brings us to the end of the show. Phil,
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: let's get some final listen.
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: That's the end of the show.
- 1:15:28Speaker 3: That's the end of the show. We're gonna get some
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: final listening feedback. You want to keep going.
- 1:15:32Speaker 6: Yeah, Hey, last call for questions. A little sparse on questions.
- 1:15:36Speaker 6: The more specific the better, too. We're getting a lot
- 1:15:38Speaker 6: of like, hey, any hunting tips, don't do that a
- 1:15:42Speaker 6: little more specific. But this one question is that provider outdoors,
- 1:15:46Speaker 6: whether from the cookbook or not, you guys have a
- 1:15:47Speaker 6: favorite antelope recipe.
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: I'd use I I if you look at our cookbooks,
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: we instead of saying it's a mule deer recipe, it's
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: a whitetail recipe, we do like horned and antlered game.
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: I don't This isn't quite answering the question. I wouldn't
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: worry about what it is. I would treat it like
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: horned an antlered game. If there's a great venison recipe
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: you like, if there's a great moose recipe you like, Hell,
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: there's a great lamb rescue you like, I would make
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: that recipe, I would not care what it was. The
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: cut of the animal and the recipe matter more than
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: what the animal was when it comes to that.
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: Just the other night, I cooked out the fresh backstrap
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: from that male whitetail buck I just killed in Wisconsin
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: by slicing the backstraps into roughly, I don't know, half
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: inch three quarter inch slices, pounding them lightly, salting and
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: peppering them, then dusting them in flour, and then pan
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: frying them in uh, you know, a light quarter inch
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: of oil and.
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: A little bit of butter in there.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: Then I made a nice pan gravy, had some potatoes
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: and asparagus in the oven, and poured it all over it.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: I did it with white tail, but I'm sure that
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: it would be delicious with the backstrap from a prong
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: horn as well.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: Yeah, any venison recipes on our website are gonna work
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: just fine. To be more specific, Danielle Pruett has an
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: antelope sausage recipe on the meat eater dot Com where
- 1:17:23Speaker 3: she really leans into the sage flavor profile, which a
- 1:17:27Speaker 3: lot of folks say that antelope meat tends to taste
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: like I think when people taste that it's because they
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: were like quartering it up in the field and laid
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: the hind quarterage.
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: Yeah, that's an oily plant.
- 1:17:41Speaker 6: Braiden, Steve is or scratch that reverse it. Steve Braiden
- 1:17:45Speaker 6: is asking what's the hardest part of writing a book?
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: Writing it? There's a quote I think it might have
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: been Garrison Keeler had this quote. Someone had this quote
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: that writing a book is like driving at night. You
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: can only see as far as what is illuminated by
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: your headlights, but you keep driving and driving and driving
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: and driving and driving and driving and driving, and finally
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: you get there. That's your experience as well. Oh hah.
- 1:18:15Speaker 6: Tory is wondering the weirdest thing you've ever used as
- 1:18:17Speaker 6: bait for fishing?
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: This is what I would like to have used this bait,
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: and what I've used this bait.
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: I've leaned into the weird catfish baits before for channel
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: cats and flatheads. Soap that was a sexy one about
- 1:18:35Speaker 3: fifteen years ago where your doory magazines would talk about.
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: It has a strong scent. You think about if you'd
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: have soap and water. You watch the sort of this
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: oil skim anything with like you take a hunk of
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: meat and soak it in cherry kool aid. That's been
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: something that was heavily promoted for catfish baits. So doing
- 1:18:54Speaker 3: the weird things like that, using like a kool Aid
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: marinade or soap for catfish.
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: Yehanni, anything weird?
- 1:19:02Speaker 3: Not that I can remember.
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I've got nothing. No, if it was trapping bait.
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: What else you got?
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: Here's something you can either set the record straight on
- 1:19:13Speaker 6: or agree with. But pippin Is says, what's the mediator's
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: thoughts on the deer population? The northern part of Wisconsin?
- 1:19:19Speaker 6: Seems the lack of deer is correlated to the wolf
- 1:19:21Speaker 6: population according to the locals. Any insight y, Just.
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: No, there's no way, it's not There's no way it's
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: not impacting that. I mean, they're they eat seven pounds
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: of meat a day. It's like, of course it's having
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: an impact. Is it the only thing? Certainly not? Is
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: it a thing? Yeah, that's all I.
- 1:19:42Speaker 3: Got to say about it.
- 1:19:43Speaker 6: Perfect spencer. Someone just asked if someone can win the
- 1:19:47Speaker 6: trivia question of the week more than once, trying to
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: find that one.
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: But if I don't, they can't.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Sure.
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: I think he's trying to point out that he's won it, don't.
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: I don't see I don't recognize name that I've seen
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: before often enough. So yeah, if you're someone who hasn't
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: sent me a hundred emails, Uh, that could certainly happen again. Yes,
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: anything else, Phil.
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: I think I think we're good. Okay, it's our longest
- 1:20:12Speaker 6: show yet.
- 1:20:13Speaker 3: I think that we had We had a lot of
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: moments where someone would declare, hey, can I do we
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: have a moment where I can talk about this?
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: So it made it.
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: You said yeah, a little longer than normal, that's right.
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: What would happen if I didn't say yes? Oh said okay,
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: and that's it.
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: I said, don't try to talk when I'm doing something.
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: Okay. I'm glad I didn't shut him down. That brings
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: us to the end of this week's episode of Media
- 1:20:35Speaker 3: to Radio Live. We'll see you back your same time
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: and place seven.
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: Thanks everybody, thanks for watching you
