Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: All animals are equal.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: What could possibly go wrong?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Animal Farm 2026.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: These pigs need an HR department.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, it's Gilbert K here.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to my channel.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: You see an animated pig and you think cute.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Maybe he sings, maybe he has a little hat.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Then he discovered this pig wants absolute power.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: And that's a very different birthday party.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Today we're talking about Andy Surkeese's animated adaptation of Animal Farm.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: And if your first thought was lovely, talking to animals, something relaxing, we need to have a conversation.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Because this is a story about animals fighting for a better life than watching the new management become the very problem they wanted to escape.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: So basically, they changed the boss, they kept the nightmare.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: It's Gilbert K here, and today the pigs are running the farm.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Somewhere, a farmer is looking at this and saying, I should have changed the Wi-Fi password.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: The farm has a management problem.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Here's the basic idea without giving you the whole story.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: The animals want equality, they want better treatment, they want control over their own lives.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Reasonable requests.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Nobody's asking for a rooftop pool, nobody's asking for a personal trainer.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: The horse would probably prefer fewer things to pull.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: But as the pigs gain control, that promise of equality starts falling apart.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Power grows, the truth becomes something the leadership can change.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: And suddenly the animals need more than a better barn.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: They need someone keeping track of what was promised.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: If somebody announces a giant transformation, my first question is: who's accountable?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: On this farm, the answer appears to be the pig.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Who would be very much prefer you stop asking questions?
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And that's a governance model, and that is a bacon emergency.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And this is why the premise still gets my attention.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: We all know the person who says, when I'm in charge, things will be different.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Then they get a bigger chair, and now you need an appointment to discuss the chair.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Andy Sir Keys behind the camera.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Andy Sir Keys directs this adaptation.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: What interests me is the challenge he's taken on.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: How do you make a story about power easy to follow without making it harmless?
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Because those are two different jobs.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: You can explain a dangerous idea in simple language.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: You don't have to remove the danger.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Think about telling someone their house is on fire.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: You can say it clearly, you do not need to add a dancing toaster.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Although Hollywood would absolutely ask, can we do three movies?
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Is there a younger toaster?
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: What about the prequel called Before the Bread?
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: For me, that's a big question with an animal farm.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Can an animated adaptation entertain people and still make them uncomfortable where the story needs to?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: I'm discussing the setup and the adaptation today.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to pretend I've watched the whole film and give you a made-up verdict.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: But I want to tell you what I'd wanted to get right.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: This voice cast is a whole situation.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about the cast.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Seth Rogan voces Napoleon, Woody Harrelson voices Boxer, Kieran Kulkin voices Squealer, Gain, Matarazzo voices Lucky.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Glenn Close is also in the cast.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: That's a quiet lineup for a place where the main facilities are in barn and some mud.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Most farms get a tractor.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: This one got a casting department.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Seth Rogan as Napoleon gives me a very funny mental image.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: That is seen from the movie My Imagination.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Everybody relax.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: We're all equal here.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Some of us just require a private office and fewer rules.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And a character named Squealer, that name alone should trigger a background check.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Imagine hiring someone for communications.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: What's your name?
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Squealer.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Fantastic.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Our trust issues are already ahead of schedule.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: But recognizable voices are only the beginning.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: What matters is whether you stop hearing celebrities and start caring about the animals.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Because an impressive cast can get me curious.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: It can do all the storytelling for you.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Cute animals can tell ugly truth.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: And here's something I love about animation: the characters can look completely different from us and still expose exactly how we behave.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Put a pig in charge, and suddenly people recognize their last workplace.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Give an animal a speech about fairness, and somebody watching thinks, I've heard that speech.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: There were fewer hoofs, but the message was familiar.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Animation can make a difficult subject easier to enter.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: You follow a character, you understand what they want.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Then Euroris, the bigger problem.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: That doesn't mean every animated film needs a lesson.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I just want something funny to happen to a squirrel.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: I contain multitudes, but when a film chooses a story like Animal Farm, the darker ideas are part of the reason to tell it.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: If you remove every sharp edge, you may end up with something pleasant that has forgotten why it exists.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Like buying a smoke alarm because it matches the curtains.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Beautiful design, terrible priorities.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: But I want this adaptation to get right.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: For me, there are three things.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: First, let us care about the animals before asking us to care about the message.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: If a character works hard and believes things will improve, I want to feel that hope.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, there's disappointment becomes somebody explaining a theme instead of a story affecting me.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Second, show how the promises change.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Power doesn't always survive wearing a sign that says, hello, I'm your future problem.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it arrives with a friendly speech and exciting plan.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Then there's one exception.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Then another exception.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Then you discover the exceptions have a better life than everybody else.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: I'm already used to reading the small print after getting excited about the price.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: The farm promises equality.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: I would like to know whether utilities are included.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Third, use the comedy to sharpen the story.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: There's plenty to laugh at and hypocrisy.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: People saying one thing and doing another.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Leaders creating rules they somehow never have to follow.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: You don't need to invent a joke every five seconds when the behavior is already ridiculous.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: But there's a difference between laughing at a bully and making the bullying feel unimportant.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: That balance is what would decide whether this adaptation works for me.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Would you trust the pigs?
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Here's my take.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Animal farm gives us a strong conversation about animation.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Can talking animals make us pay closer attention to people?
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Because the farm is an easy place to recognize a bad system.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: He can point at the pig and say, that's the problem.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: In our lives, it can take a little longer.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Sometimes the problem sends very polite emails.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: And sometimes the problem says, we are a family here.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: And sometimes the problem schedules a meeting to explain why nobody has time to finish their work.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: I've seen enough meetings.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: If a pig sends me a calendar invitation, I'm asking for an agenda.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Animal Farm was released in the US and Canada on May 1st, 2026.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: This isn't a brand new announcement, it's a film.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: I hadn't covered here and a story that gives us more to discuss than whether an animated animal looks cute.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: So tell me in the comments when a book has a dark message, should the animated version keep that darkness or change the tone to reach younger viewers?
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: And if you've seen this adaptation, tell me whether it gets that balance right.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Keep the big spoilers out of it.
