- 0:00So, I wanted to have this conversation
- 0:02with you because I know you, you know,
- 0:03you're a little bit younger than me, but
- 0:05you definitely had some home consoles
- 0:07growing up as a kid. What was your like
- 0:09first recollection of a video game
- 0:12console that you had in your house?
- 0:14The first video game console I remember
- 0:18having is the NES. So, the Nintendo
- 0:21Entertainment System. I have fond vivid
- 0:25memories of blowing into cartridges to
- 0:29make sure that it worked and like that
- 0:32flickering red light you had to just
- 0:34mess about with the little loading tray
- 0:36to try and get the game to start
- 0:38sometimes. Um, that for sure for me is
- 0:42one of my earliest memories of gaming
- 0:45and probably one of my fondest to be
- 0:46honest. I've got the the action set in
- 0:49the back there. It's definitely any
- 0:51I was going to say that. I was going to
- 0:52say that you got a picture there in the
- 0:54back. You know, it's it looks great.
- 0:57Yeah. Yeah. It's I mean, you know, the
- 0:59is it the zapper, the orange gun
- 1:02that that you know, we had very many so
- 1:07very many games of duck hunt with the
- 1:10family, all trying to compete for the
- 1:12high score. Um, do you know what I
- 1:14actually found out? What's really crazy
- 1:17is probably only like maybe six or seven
- 1:21months ago, I found out you could
- 1:23actually control the dog with the other
- 1:25controller.
- 1:25Yeah, I found that as well. Same thing
- 1:27about the same time frame. I saw a
- 1:29video. I don't remember where I saw the
- 1:31video, but the second controller could
- 1:33move the duck, which is wild.
- 1:35I literally had no idea. That is that
- 1:39literally blew my mind because that
- 1:42like, you know, we all just huddled
- 1:43around the TV watching one person play
- 1:45at a time. If they advertised that a bit
- 1:48better, it would have been even more
- 1:49fun.
- 1:50Agreed. That I I I used to hate those
- 1:53freaking ducks and I hated the dog that
- 1:55popped up on the bottom of the screen
- 1:57when you when you miss the stupid thing.
- 1:58But now with like I have like a lot of
- 2:00um you know the ROMs I forget what
- 2:03they're called right now but the um
- 2:06recreation that's the word. Thank you.
- 2:08The emulators on on some of my AR home
- 2:10arcades that I have. So like the stuff
- 2:13that I have it makes it a lot more
- 2:14easier. There's like uh
- 2:16there's stuff in there you could put so
- 2:17like you can always you know show where
- 2:20you're shooting so it makes a lot
- 2:21easier.
- 2:22Uh you know back then forget it man. It
- 2:25was just like uh that game was one of
- 2:26the harder games I played. Let me ask
- 2:28you cuz my that wasn't my first console
- 2:31that I remember having, but how old were
- 2:33you when you think you got that NES?
- 2:36Um,
- 2:38it must have been we I must have been
- 2:41about
- 2:43I'm trying to go I'm trying to claw back
- 2:46how far I remember what age I was, but I
- 2:50mean when did it come out? 1985
- 2:52was it? It came. So, I actually just did
- 2:55a video about this on my channel, which
- 2:56is actually going to We're filming this
- 2:58today on a Tuesday, but it's actually
- 2:59going to release tomorrow on a
- 3:00Wednesday. But, believe it or not, it
- 3:02had a soft release in 1985 and then a
- 3:04full release in 1986.
- 3:07Okay. So, I was born in 1987. So,
- 3:11obviously us being in the UK, we get
- 3:13everything a little bit delayed behind
- 3:16yourselves in the US. I probably would
- 3:18have said that I would have been about
- 3:20three or four maybe my first experience
- 3:22of it, but then I I would probably been
- 3:24about five or six when I was really into
- 3:28into it.
- 3:29Yeah. Uh to me like I remember I don't
- 3:31remember if it was 85 or 86 where I got
- 3:33my console. I do remember my first
- 3:35experience with a home console was al
- 3:39wasn't the NES, but my first experience
- 3:42with the NES was at my cousin's house
- 3:43who lived in
- 3:45I think he lived in Rockland County, New
- 3:47York at the time. And I remember going
- 3:48over his house and he had the first
- 3:50iteration because it came with Rob the
- 3:51robot.
- 3:52Oh yeah.
- 3:52And I'm looking I'm looking at this
- 3:53thing and I'm like, "What the f is this
- 3:55stupid robot?" Because I didn't
- 3:56understand how it worked with the
- 3:57system. But I remember playing games
- 3:59like kung fu. He had kung fu. I think he
- 4:01had Gyroite and and a few others and I
- 4:04was just like hooked and every time I'd
- 4:05ask him to play he would always like
- 4:07start the game over and play himself and
- 4:08he was a real [ __ ] about it. But
- 4:10[laughter]
- 4:12the NES to me was in my opinion the
- 4:14greatest system. But I want to share my
- 4:16experience first before we go on
- 4:18continue with yours in the NES. My first
- 4:20gaming console that I remember was the
- 4:22Atari 2600. I knew I was a little bit
- 4:24older than you. So yeah, another great
- 4:26thing is like my cousin, different
- 4:28cousin, believe it or not, had the Atari
- 4:302600 and they had
- 4:32um not a lot of games, but a few here
- 4:34and there, and I would always kind of go
- 4:36to their house and and and just sit
- 4:37there for an hour playing it when we
- 4:39were visiting them.
- 4:40Yeah.
- 4:40But I remember games like I don't know
- 4:42if you even heard of this game called
- 4:43Kaboom.
- 4:45So, Kaboom, it it was a real weird game
- 4:49because it was like a convict in the in
- 4:51the white and striped, you know, gar
- 4:54they garb they wear at the top of the
- 4:56screen and on the bottom was like three
- 4:58barrels and that's what you controlled.
- 4:59There's these three barrels going side
- 5:01to side, left to right. I actually
- 5:03mentioned it with um Ricky when we're
- 5:05talking about video games and it's the
- 5:07guy drops bombs from the top of the
- 5:10screen and you have to catch them in
- 5:11these barrels and if it one of them
- 5:13falls to the floor you lose a life. So
- 5:15that's my greatest memory on the Atari
- 5:182600 besides Pitfalls and another game
- 5:20that I played constantly
- 5:22but uh yeah just just wild. So the NES,
- 5:25let's get back to the NES because that's
- 5:27I I agree with you. It's
- 5:29my first love when we're talking about
- 5:30video games. Mhm.
- 5:32You had the console when you were a kid,
- 5:333 or 4 years old, whatever it was. Do
- 5:35you remember a specific game that you
- 5:36played like or a couple?
- 5:38Yeah. So, uh, Super Mario,
- 5:41like that game for me, like hours and
- 5:45hours trying to get further and further.
- 5:48Um, but in true uh, you know, games back
- 5:52in the 80s and the '9s were a lot more
- 5:55difficult than they they are now today.
- 5:57I don't know if like you know if you
- 5:58play modern games but there's there's
- 6:00checkpoints there save points you don't
- 6:02if you die you're not really dead but
- 6:04with on these games you go back all the
- 6:06way to the beginning man like if you
- 6:08lose all your lives. Um
- 6:09y
- 6:10so it it is frustrating and I probably
- 6:12would say it probably caused
- 6:14a lot of stress and anxiety for little
- 6:17kids [laughter]
- 6:19like not dying and you know like doesn't
- 6:22help when the the timer as well. It's
- 6:23got a timer on the level, so even if you
- 6:25try to be careful, like the time runs
- 6:28out, the time runs out, you lose a life.
- 6:30So, um, yeah, definitely Super Mario
- 6:33Brothers. Uh, I only actually really
- 6:36clock that game on the Nintendo Switch
- 6:38because it has that like if you die, you
- 6:42can rewind and go back so you can kind
- 6:44of save yourself.
- 6:45Yeah.
- 6:45Um,
- 6:47but yeah, that that that game for me was
- 6:49awesome.
- 6:50kids today that don't know the pain that
- 6:52we went through. You know how many
- 6:53controllers I threw at all of my systems
- 6:56back then? Atari 2600, NES. I mean, in
- 7:00order for us to save a game, we'd have
- 7:01to like pause and leave it on all night
- 7:03and then come back to it the next day,
- 7:05right? So, there was no save. It was
- 7:07just like, "All right, I have to leave
- 7:08this on." And then maybe your parents
- 7:09saw the light on and they shut it off on
- 7:11you and you I I remember losing my mind
- 7:14more than once on my dad doing that.
- 7:17Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. that, you know, those
- 7:19were the days. And, you know, like we're
- 7:21talking about the the Nintendo Zapper,
- 7:23like that gun doesn't work with modern
- 7:26TVs. It only works with CRT TVs. Um,
- 7:30so like it it's kind of, you know,
- 7:32unless, you know, CRTVs at the moment go
- 7:35for quite a bit of money. They're quite
- 7:37valuable. Um, but with the modern like
- 7:40LCDs or OLEDs and stuff like that, they
- 7:42just do not they're not compatible. Um,
- 7:46but I'm I'm just checking out the duck
- 7:47hunt box here because I've got it here.
- 7:49And I was hoping on the back it was
- 7:50saying about controlling the the the the
- 7:54ducks, but it it says one or two
- 7:56players. So,
- 7:58you kind of think that that just means
- 8:00that,
- 8:03you know, not that you can control the
- 8:05deck. They need they need to advertise
- 8:06that better.
- 8:07But, you know what? That game was ported
- 8:09from an arcade. So, that game was in the
- 8:11arcades and you couldn't do that in the
- 8:12arcade that I knew of. like there was no
- 8:14way that someone can can could use the
- 8:16other gun because it came with two guns
- 8:17in the arcade that someone could, you
- 8:19know, flail the other gun and and move
- 8:21the duck. So, I don't know if that's
- 8:22something they added in. Have you tried
- 8:24it? That's the next thing cuz I haven't
- 8:26tried it yet. So, is it tried? I don't
- 8:28even know.
- 8:28I've not tried it to be fair. Um but the
- 8:31the the only thing I would probably say
- 8:32is these were always like um like in the
- 8:36action set there that it came on like a
- 8:38double cartridge with Super Mario. So,
- 8:41and you never really got like an, you
- 8:43know, instruction manuals were just
- 8:44thrown out like willy-nilly back then.
- 8:47So, there was never anything really
- 8:49about it. So, this is as an adult is the
- 8:51first time I've actually got like a a
- 8:53box of it. So,
- 8:54so I was going to say that that system
- 8:56that you had was the was the the the
- 8:59re-release because the original system,
- 9:01I'm not even talking about the one with
- 9:02Rob that the first one, but the next one
- 9:04after that was just a control deck that
- 9:07didn't come with um the double
- 9:09cartridge. It only came with Super Mario
- 9:11Brothers, so that was a single
- 9:12cartridge. Everything like you must have
- 9:14had like the the re-release after that,
- 9:15which makes sense because you were um
- 9:18obviously a lot younger than I was when
- 9:20I got it.
- 9:21Yeah.
- 9:21But the the also the other thing I've
- 9:23just recently learned doing that other
- 9:24video about NES was that believe it or
- 9:26not, the Super Mario Brothers game, the
- 9:28original, didn't perform well in Europe
- 9:31compared to the US. The US it was a
- 9:33massive hit, but it didn't perform well
- 9:34in Europe.
- 9:35Wow. That's that's really interesting
- 9:37cuz literally I have like fond memories
- 9:39of like when I originally like my first
- 9:42encounter with Mario was obviously Super
- 9:45Mario Brothers the game, but it was like
- 9:49I remember like seeing just all of a
- 9:51sudden seeing Mario everywhere. So you
- 9:54go there'd be like I remember getting
- 9:55like sticker packs for sticker albums
- 9:58for Super Mario and it' be literally
- 10:01the stickers would literally just be
- 10:03like a level in the game and like you
- 10:06put put it in your sticker album. Um
- 10:08yeah and like obviously a TV s like a
- 10:11cartoon came out as well and stuff like
- 10:13that but so it was quite I thought it
- 10:15was quite big but maybe maybe the
- 10:17numbers weren't as strong maybe. I don't
- 10:18know. I
- 10:20I don't know. I was just going from when
- 10:21I was reading doing my research for the
- 10:23video, but um
- 10:25regarding the NES, were besides Duck
- 10:27Hunt and Super Mario Brothers, you have
- 10:28any others that you were like, "Oh, got
- 10:30into playing so much?"
- 10:31Yeah, so Batman um the 1989 Batman game.
- 10:36Um the [clears throat] Turtles game was
- 10:39unbelievably
- 10:41challenging, especially like early on in
- 10:43the game. Like there sometimes with like
- 10:47you can't you just can't carry on
- 10:49playing it and you get to a certain
- 10:50point I can't do this. Like
- 10:52you're talking about the original
- 10:53Turtles game, right? Not the arcade that
- 10:55they got the release the second release.
- 10:57So yeah, I'm talking about this one.
- 11:00Yeah, that's that's the one they they
- 11:02should have just gone with the arcade
- 11:03from the beginning. They decided to go a
- 11:04different route.
- 11:05This this is a a masterpiece. An
- 11:08absolute masterpiece this game. But this
- 11:10is
- 11:11Have you ever played the arcade? In the
- 11:13arcade?
- 11:15Uh, I think so. Yeah, I would have
- 11:16played I would have played it in an
- 11:18arcade somewhere. Um, 100%. I actually
- 11:21did. Um, they had uh on the PlayStation
- 11:24Plus like maybe a few months back. They
- 11:27had uh like the uh I want to it's like a
- 11:32a compilation of all the the Turtles
- 11:35games over the years. So it like I
- 11:38pretty much did most of them on that. It
- 11:40was easy quite easy to play and again
- 11:42you could kind of rewind and go back if
- 11:44you got stuck.
- 11:46That's what's good about modern gaming
- 11:48right now. It's like you get to play all
- 11:49the classics for an inexpensive price
- 11:51which is great.
- 11:52I remember the the Turtles game strictly
- 11:54from the arcade. I did have both
- 11:56versions. is the one you showed on the
- 11:57NES. But you're right,
- 11:58that original Turtles game I had and it
- 12:00was so difficult that difficulty that I
- 12:03just I gave up at some point and just
- 12:05kind of moved on to another game. But um
- 12:07back to what you were saying, you played
- 12:09the Turtles, you played Duck Hunt, Super
- 12:10Mario, obviously
- 12:11Super Mario 3 was Super That was a great
- 12:15another great game.
- 12:18Phenomenal.
- 12:19I remember when that game originally
- 12:21released. So, I don't know if you
- 12:23remember the movie The Wizard with Fred
- 12:25Savage.
- 12:26Um, no. I'm not familiar with that one.
- 12:29Oh, dude. When you have two hours to
- 12:31waste, go look for the movie The Wizard
- 12:34with Fred Savage. It's about about this
- 12:36kid who's like autistic and he's like a
- 12:38whiz at some of these video games. And
- 12:40he he runs away from home and he they're
- 12:43heading to California to play in this
- 12:46this tournament. And they released Super
- 12:48Mario Brothers 3. And this is before the
- 12:49movie came before the game came out in
- 12:51the United States. It was our our first
- 12:53look at the game before it actually came
- 12:55out. And I remember going to that movie
- 12:56like, "Oh my god, everybody was so hyped
- 12:58for that game." And and when it came
- 13:00out, I remember calling every Toys R Us
- 13:03around to see if they had the game. I
- 13:04remember I was at work with my father
- 13:05and I'd be sitting there just like in
- 13:07the freaking phone book cuz that's how
- 13:09it was back in the day. You had to go to
- 13:11yellow pages and look out every toy
- 13:12store and I would be calling everybody,
- 13:14"Do you have this? Do you have this?"
- 13:15Finally, I found one about 20 minutes
- 13:16away from his work and he took me there
- 13:18after work and I got it. And that game
- 13:20was a lot easier than the the original
- 13:23Super Mario Brothers, but nonetheless a
- 13:25great a great game.
- 13:26Well, the additional power of being able
- 13:28to like fly and stuff was was great to
- 13:31be fair.
- 13:32Absolutely. Absolutely. Um, do you play
- 13:34any sports game on the AS?
- 13:35Um, so what? No. So there was like a I
- 13:39remember there's like a Formula 1 game
- 13:42which was okay, but the my I think that
- 13:45the the sport one that probably stood
- 13:47out for me was there was um was it Punch
- 13:50Out? Was it not Punch Out?
- 13:53Was it Punch Out?
- 13:55Punch Out. Mike Tyson's Punch Out or the
- 13:57regular one? Because Tyson's Punch Out
- 13:59came out in like 87
- 14:02I think. And then a couple years later
- 14:04they they um released Mike Tyson. They
- 14:06his contract expired and they just
- 14:07re-released it as Punch Out with a
- 14:09different guy at the end, Mr. Dream.
- 14:11Yeah. I I don't I mean, it's one of
- 14:14those things where it's like that that's
- 14:17almost like what do they call that? The
- 14:19the Mandela effect where it's like
- 14:21people remember it from that, but then
- 14:23when you get a copy of it, that's that's
- 14:25not how I remember it. Like,
- 14:26yeah,
- 14:26you know what I mean? Um, no. I I I
- 14:28think I would have had the second
- 14:29version to be fair cuz I don't remember
- 14:31Mike Tyson being on it, but I remember
- 14:35uh I remember seeing that in like a
- 14:37video and stuff about it. To be fair,
- 14:40that game, Mike Tyson's Punch Out to me
- 14:43was the greatest game. I I don't want to
- 14:46say for any console ever, but especially
- 14:49for the NES, I believe that's the number
- 14:50one game of all time because the hype
- 14:52surrounding that game. So, I I have a
- 14:54story to tell when it comes to this game
- 14:55cuz it's one of my fondest memories as a
- 14:58kid.
- 14:58Okay.
- 14:59So, if you go back and watch some of the
- 15:01commercials,
- 15:06but for that, you've got to beat Mike
- 15:08Tyson.
- 15:10Mike [music] Tyson's Punch Out from
- 15:12Nintendo. Now you're playing with power.
- 15:15The commercials for the Mike Tyson's
- 15:17Punch Out video game was unbelievable.
- 15:19It's basically him in a dark room with a
- 15:21bunch of TVs and he's like shadow boxing
- 15:24in the commercial and the hype around
- 15:27the game was crazy. So again, that was
- 15:29another game where I remember it was
- 15:30almost around Christmas time and my dad
- 15:33kept telling me, "I'm looking everywhere
- 15:34for this game and I can't find it." I
- 15:36guess he was trying to like tell me
- 15:37like, "You may not get this thing
- 15:39because it's it's really hard to find."
- 15:41Yeah.
- 15:41So I gave him a list of another game
- 15:44which happened to be Ghosts and Goblins.
- 15:45I don't know if you ever played that,
- 15:46but
- 15:47I said, "If you can't get it, you know,
- 15:49you know, I'd like this game as well."
- 15:50So,
- 15:53I remember I don't remember where we
- 15:54were. It might have been a KB or
- 15:56whatever. And he's like, "All right, I'm
- 15:57going to get you Ghost and Gobblets."
- 15:58And I knew it's Christmas, but he's
- 16:00like, "Listen, let's let me just get it
- 16:01just in case you can't find the other
- 16:02one. You know what's coming." Whatever.
- 16:03I said, "Okay, fine." So, come Christmas
- 16:06morning. Okay. And like I said, this is
- 16:08my most fondest memory I have as a kid
- 16:12under the tree, just me and my dad.
- 16:14because that's how I grew up. We're
- 16:15we're unboxing presents, stuff like
- 16:17that. And
- 16:18I get to the last gift and it's that
- 16:20Nintendo box. So, I'm thinking, "All
- 16:22right,
- 16:24Ghost and Gobblets." I open that thing
- 16:25and it's Mike Tyson's Punch Out. And
- 16:26when I said, I was like
- 16:28floored. I was so excited and so happy,
- 16:31man. He he he spoofed me. He got me and
- 16:34I ended up going to my aunt's house
- 16:35later and she gave me the Ghost and
- 16:37Goblins. But it was just like I I was so
- 16:41ecstatic
- 16:42to get that game in. And it was like one
- 16:44of my best experiences I ever had. But
- 16:46if you go back and play that game now,
- 16:48it's just as hard as it was back in the
- 16:51day. Still some great memories fighting
- 16:53some of these guys like King Hippo, Don
- 16:55Flamco, and I can name them all because
- 16:56I still play to this game on my
- 16:58emulators now, but uh such an iconic
- 17:00game.
- 17:08Yeah, it's interesting that you say
- 17:09about like that whole you you've got
- 17:11that as a core memory for you, that
- 17:13whole punch out thing with your dad. Um,
- 17:15it's a special memory and uh I I've got
- 17:18a a similar story myself where I I
- 17:22remember I I was probably about maybe
- 17:25about 10 I'm guessing 10 11 and then I
- 17:29opened at Christmas like my mom and dad
- 17:31had split up when I was real really
- 17:33young and my dad had got me some
- 17:35Christmas presents and I was open
- 17:38Let me stop you right there because I'm
- 17:39the same way. My parents split up when I
- 17:41was really young as well. So
- 17:42Okay. Yeah. um childhood divorce
- 17:44obviously uh pretty much most people are
- 17:47these days let's be honest but
- 17:49um yeah so I used to get obviously
- 17:51presents from my mom presents from my
- 17:53dad and then
- 17:54I got uh I open a present from my dad
- 17:57you get like and it was a game boy
- 17:59advance game and it was like Harry
- 18:02Potter
- 18:03and the ch it's so Harry Potter and the
- 18:06philosopher stone or the sorcerer stone
- 18:08or whatever you guys call it and I was
- 18:10like oh what like in my head I was
- 18:12thinking What a [ __ ] Like he's
- 18:15[laughter] I've only got I've only got a
- 18:17Game Boy Color or whatever it was. I was
- 18:20like he's bought me like the wrong game
- 18:23and I was like ah. So anyway, so I'm
- 18:26opening a few more and I was like oh he
- 18:28bought me another Game Boy Advance game.
- 18:30I was like why? I was like oh I was
- 18:33thinking I can't play any of these. And
- 18:35then I got a bit further in and there
- 18:37was a Game Boy Advance. cuz I was I was
- 18:39literally flawed because like I was like
- 18:42was not even expecting it. I didn't even
- 18:44I didn't even know he knew what a Game
- 18:46Boy Advance was.
- 18:47So, it was pretty that was a nice
- 18:49memory.
- 18:50That's awesome. And that that's what
- 18:51it's about. I hate to say it. That's
- 18:52what this podcast is about. Remembering
- 18:54[ __ ] like that, sharing experiences of
- 18:56of getting something like, you know, big
- 18:58moments in your life where, you know,
- 19:00you want to kind of share with other
- 19:01people. That's an awesome story, man.
- 19:03Yeah. But I mean the, you know, when the
- 19:05Game Boy came out and I got that um
- 19:08Pokemon Red that the hours I put into
- 19:12Pokemon was like
- 19:15that game was that game was amazing.
- 19:17Yeah, I've heard that from from a lot of
- 19:19people that that game was good. Before
- 19:21we exit out of the NES, anything else
- 19:23you want to say about like games or the
- 19:26system itself? Yeah. So, I I remember so
- 19:28like, you know, um there weren't many
- 19:31like uh game shops in the UK that really
- 19:35did like pre-owned stuff back then. So,
- 19:38like if you wanted to come across NES
- 19:41games and like our collection of NES
- 19:44games, like none of them were boxed,
- 19:47like no manuals. It was all literally
- 19:49just the cartridges in like a almost
- 19:52like a suitcase, like a plastic suitcase
- 19:55that we kept them all in. And I we we
- 19:58have these things called car boot sales
- 20:00here where people literally just
- 20:03they go to an open field, pull up in
- 20:05their cars, put like a table and a
- 20:08blanket down and they sell goods like
- 20:11they sell like their pre pre-owned stuff
- 20:13like a flea market.
- 20:14Like a flea market. Yeah. Um, and that's
- 20:17where I would go I literally would spend
- 20:21hours going like looking for Nintendo
- 20:24games and like you'd be like, "Oh, how
- 20:28much Nintendo games?" And they'll be
- 20:30like, "Oh, 50p." And you'll be like,
- 20:32"I've only I've only got I've only got
- 20:3530p." Uh, would you take 30p?
- 20:38[laughter] And I we just amassed like an
- 20:41amazing collection of games. Um, so like
- 20:45I was really spoiled in terms of uh the
- 20:49the games that I had available to play
- 20:51for the NES and it's just I have like
- 20:56that that's not my original one cuz we
- 20:58lost it when we moved like years and
- 21:00years ago. But I bought this probably
- 21:02about you know when you become like an
- 21:04adult and you earn adult money.
- 21:07Yeah. Like I think probably one of my
- 21:09first paychecks I went out and bought
- 21:11this
- 21:13like
- 21:13I I have one right here. I don't know if
- 21:15you can see it, but right behind some of
- 21:16these games is I have the same ex same
- 21:18exact set. I I bought it about a year
- 21:20ago at a at a toy show. But yeah,
- 21:22listen, that's we want to recapture our
- 21:24youth and remember some of the stuff
- 21:25that
- 21:26it kind of made us who we are. And
- 21:28definitely the Nintendo was was one of
- 21:31those things. But back to what you said
- 21:33like about like you were able to still
- 21:36like trade in games a little bit and
- 21:38like buy games at like a flea market.
- 21:39When I was growing up with the NES, we
- 21:41didn't have any of that stuff. My
- 21:43greatest memory of going to like buy a
- 21:45game or find a game is is Toys R Us. Did
- 21:47you guys have a Toys R Us where you are?
- 21:49Yeah, we had we had one in one in the
- 21:51city.
- 21:52So, do you remember at least the one
- 21:55here? you tell me if it was uh the same
- 21:57by you, but they had one aisle of just a
- 22:01wall of NES games and on the opposite
- 22:03wall was Sega Genesis games or the Sega
- 22:06Master System games. It is what it was.
- 22:08And it was just like the pictures of the
- 22:10game and and under the picture was like
- 22:12like a like a receipt that you had to
- 22:14take out and bring to the register and
- 22:16then you would pay for and then you take
- 22:17that receipt to like another place in
- 22:19Toys R Us and they would come out of the
- 22:21back with the game. Did you guys have it
- 22:22like that?
- 22:23No. So, my only memory I mean I I
- 22:27remember like probably the last
- 22:30the last time I probably went to a Toys
- 22:32R Us cuz they closed down over here
- 22:35was probably was probably when I got my
- 22:38Gamecube which was what 200
- 22:40Yeah, long time
- 22:42five maybe. He just there's absolutely I
- 22:44can't even remember when that was 2004
- 22:47some sometime around there. 2003. Um,
- 22:51but like my earliest memory of Toys R Us
- 22:54was really toys. I don't remember ever
- 22:56seeing games when I was younger there.
- 22:58Um, let me tell you, man, taking that
- 23:01ticket up to the counter because
- 23:03sometimes you'd get there for a game you
- 23:04were looking for and the tickets would
- 23:05be out, meaning they were out of stock
- 23:07of the game.
- 23:07That is the worst disappointment you
- 23:09could have as a kid. Walking up to that
- 23:11game and seeing that box right there and
- 23:12having no tickets underneath. But when
- 23:15they did have it, taking that ticket is
- 23:17like the most excitement you could ever
- 23:19have. Walking to the register and then
- 23:21walking to where you had to pick up the
- 23:23game. It was like the anticipation and
- 23:24the excitement was like
- 23:27it was palpable when I was a kid.
- 23:29Yeah. It's like the winning lottery
- 23:30ticket. You've actually been able to get
- 23:32a copy.
- 23:33I was like Charlie Bucket, man. You
- 23:34kidding me? Walking [laughter] up the
- 23:36[ __ ] ticket,
- 23:39you know.
- 23:41[laughter]
- 23:41Exactly. Run, Charlie.
- 23:44run straight home and don't talk to
- 23:46anybody. That's what that's what it was
- 23:48like.
- 23:51Let's segue into your next home console.
- 23:55Uh so that would have been my Game Boy
- 23:57like that was like I remember I don't
- 24:00know if you I presume you guys had them
- 24:02in the US cuz everything you guys got
- 24:04everything first, but I had like the
- 24:06see-through one
- 24:07so it's like clear.
- 24:09The case you mean?
- 24:11Yeah, the case. Yeah. So, you could see
- 24:12all like the circuit boards and
- 24:13everything inside and the chips and
- 24:15stuff
- 24:16and I was just like blown away. Like I
- 24:20absolutely loved it. I remember Super
- 24:21Mario Land. Um, I remember there was I
- 24:24had like a Turtles game which I
- 24:26absolutely loved but it was really
- 24:29difficult and I had like a Bart Simpson
- 24:33trying to escape some camp and like it I
- 24:37I remember distinctively like it was on
- 24:41like the bookcase
- 24:43and I was like for the whole summer I
- 24:45was trying to find it and I was like
- 24:46it's on the bookcase why can't I find it
- 24:49like the game and I just remember for
- 24:51the whole some not being able to find
- 24:53it. And then one day I just said,
- 24:54"Right, I'm going to tear the house
- 24:55apart to find it cuz I thought like I
- 24:59just lost it."
- 24:59Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:00And in the end, I found it on like I
- 25:03found it on the bookcase like right
- 25:04right at [laughter] the end of when I
- 25:06was looking. I just literally torn the
- 25:08house upside down looking for this game
- 25:11and the game was awful. Absolutely
- 25:13awful.
- 25:14There there were a couple games that I
- 25:16play were absolutely awful. There's a
- 25:17Three Stooges game for the Nintendo that
- 25:19it's like the dumbest game you could
- 25:21ever want to play. But I got to tell
- 25:23you, man, for some reason, I played that
- 25:25stupid game all the [ __ ] time. It was
- 25:28like Three Stooges Trivia. It was like
- 25:30getting these crackers that were being
- 25:33eaten by bugs in the soup and you had to
- 25:34get the cracker before the bug ate it.
- 25:36Yeah.
- 25:36Just stupid ass game, but I played it
- 25:39all the time.
- 25:40Sorry. So, Game Boy Advance. I had the
- 25:42original Game Boy and I think I was in
- 25:43seventh grade. I remember getting that
- 25:44Game Boy. Um, besides some of the games
- 25:48you played, was that the color version
- 25:49or No, because I only had the black and
- 25:51white.
- 25:51Yeah. So, my first ever Game Boy was the
- 25:54black and white with this with the clear
- 25:56um plastic for the case. Um
- 25:58Okay.
- 25:59And that's what I predominantly I mean
- 26:01it took four batteries like
- 26:04just that thing like lot like drank
- 26:06battery acid. But um
- 26:09yeah, that that that was my first one. I
- 26:11remember like I used to have like a
- 26:13clear massive case to put my games in,
- 26:15but you know, I wasn't very organized in
- 26:18as a kid. And
- 26:19I could tell with that with that
- 26:20Simpsons story.
- 26:22Yeah, exactly. Yeah. And uh I remember I
- 26:24mean I don't know if I'm guessing you
- 26:26didn't play Pokemon Red, but I remember
- 26:29getting that and playing it and uh
- 26:32playing putting a lot of hours into the
- 26:34game and uh there was this cheat where
- 26:38you could do like get in infinite like
- 26:44um in the game they have these things
- 26:46called rare candies. So, you can give a
- 26:48candy to a Pokemon and it will go up a
- 26:50level to like his experience level.
- 26:52Okay.
- 26:53And there was a there was a a cheat
- 26:55called there was basically like a a
- 26:58glitch in the game with a um a Pokémon
- 27:01that just didn't exist. It was basically
- 27:03like there was 151 Pokémon in the game
- 27:08and this one was like 152. It wasn't
- 27:11supposed to exist. It was like a test
- 27:13reference character from like the, you
- 27:15know, in the game. And you used to be
- 27:18able to go, you used to be able to do if
- 27:20you did like things in certain order and
- 27:22like moved in the in the right way, you
- 27:24used to be able to go and find him. And
- 27:26if you fought him and you caught him,
- 27:29like you'd be able to get infinite
- 27:32objects like in your inventory. And that
- 27:35those rare candies meant that you could
- 27:36level up your Pokémon to like level 99
- 27:39or 100.
- 27:40And um I remember doing that for the
- 27:42first time and being like, "Oh my god,
- 27:44this is amazing." Like, "I can't believe
- 27:46this is in the game. This is in the
- 27:48game." Leveled up all my Pokemon. I
- 27:50probably put like 25 hours into the game
- 27:53easily. And the next time I went to go
- 27:57and switch my Game Boy on, the game had
- 27:59corrupted and I'd lost the save. And I
- 28:01was like, man, that like it was
- 28:05heartbreaking cuz I was literally like
- 28:07I was like at my friend's house and I
- 28:09was going to show him what to do and how
- 28:11to get to it and I was like fired at my
- 28:13Game Boy and it was like where the where
- 28:16the hell is my save gone? Like
- 28:19but you heard you heard about these
- 28:21things but you just didn't think it
- 28:22would happen to you.
- 28:25What what I was meant to say earlier was
- 28:27that after Punch Out, there was a game I
- 28:30really loved on the NES called Exciter
- 28:32Bike.
- 28:32Yeah, Excite Bike. That was one of the
- 28:34originals.
- 28:35That was honestly that was probably that
- 28:38was up there with one of my favorite
- 28:39just casual playing games. Like you
- 28:42could just go and have a bit of fun on
- 28:43it and like 5 10 minutes, 15 minutes and
- 28:45then
- 28:47just just, you know, switch off. It was
- 28:49good.
- 28:50That was another game that was ported
- 28:51from an arcade. So that's where
- 28:53Nintendo, I think, why it was so iconic.
- 28:55And we can we could talk about Nintendo
- 28:56for two hours here. That's why I call it
- 28:58the greatest console ever because
- 29:00a lot of those games that Nintendo
- 29:02already had as arcades, they were able
- 29:04to port to the NES. And that's what I
- 29:06think made the console a tremendous
- 29:08success. Um, some of the other ones um
- 29:11sports-wise uh for the NES, I'm trying
- 29:14to think now um that Nintendo had like
- 29:16right out of the gate, but
- 29:18yeah, I'm I'm drawing a blank. But
- 29:20again, we could spend the entire show
- 29:21talking about about any how great that
- 29:24console was.
- 29:26We kind of missed out the Super Nintendo
- 29:28cuz the Super Nintendo is probably one
- 29:30of the it's probably it's it's very up
- 29:32there with the NES, but it's um I
- 29:35[clears throat] never owned it as a kid.
- 29:38Like it was what for some reason it's
- 29:40one of those consoles where I just
- 29:42skipped out. I actually only became like
- 29:44aware of like and played the games like
- 29:47emulating them as a teenager. like
- 29:49Chrono Trigger, um Maximum Carnage, like
- 29:55the
- 29:55Final The Final Fantasy on the Super NES
- 29:58was very good as well.
- 29:59Oh, was it? Yeah. Zelda Link to the Link
- 30:02to the Past. What a game. Honestly, what
- 30:05a game. Um
- 30:06it's a lot better than the NES game
- 30:09if I'm being honest. That was quite
- 30:11The original Zelda to me was it's a top
- 30:14five game of all time for me because it
- 30:16was so unique. Um, it would drive me
- 30:19nuts because you you didn't know where
- 30:22anything was and you didn't know there
- 30:24were secret rooms you had to bomb. Like,
- 30:26how would you even think to know that
- 30:28until somebody would tell me who I was
- 30:29going to school with, hey, if you do
- 30:30this,
- 30:31that's there. Like, it took me forever
- 30:33to beat that game.
- 30:35Did you ever see Have you ever seen the
- 30:36videos of like the Nintendo call center
- 30:40stuff with people ringing up about
- 30:42Zelda? And the guy the guys are
- 30:44geniuses, aren't they? Cuz they're like,
- 30:45"Oh, yeah. If you go back to the
- 30:47forbidden forest and you go through the
- 30:49the door on the left and like you put a
- 30:52bomb there, you're like, jeez louise.
- 30:55Like how how are you supposed to know
- 30:58that? Cuz the internet did not even
- 31:00exist.
- 31:00I know. I remember they used to try to
- 31:02get like the game books and and I used
- 31:04to try to find the game books when I'd
- 31:06go to like a store because there's no
- 31:07internet back then. You can't go on and
- 31:08look and see, well, how do I do this
- 31:10like the kids can do now. It was just
- 31:12like either you knew somebody who did
- 31:14it. the call center like you said which
- 31:17if I did that my father would ring my
- 31:19neck because it was like a 1 1900 number
- 31:20or whatever it was it would cost a
- 31:22fortune
- 31:23but like we had so many struggles
- 31:25because you'd get to a point in the game
- 31:28and then you had nowhere else to go and
- 31:30that's how I was with Zelda for a really
- 31:31long time until I figured out some other
- 31:33stuff that somebody probably told me I
- 31:35don't even remember at this point.
- 31:36Yeah. Yeah. And was you disappointed
- 31:39with the second Zelda
- 31:41Adventure of Link? I hated that game. I
- 31:43thought it was such a far off.
- 31:46It's completely far removed from the
- 31:48original, isn't it?
- 31:49Exactly. It's not even close to what it
- 31:51was. I understand the route they went.
- 31:52It was like a sidescrolling game instead
- 31:54of the the the map thing. And I I just
- 31:56thought it was terrible. I could never
- 31:58get into it like I was the original.
- 32:00So again, like Zeld the original Zelda
- 32:05uh Zelda 2, Castlevania.
- 32:08No, I just never saw them for sale like
- 32:12you know like when I was at at car boot
- 32:14sales and stuff. So I never got to play
- 32:16them as a kid again when I emulated or
- 32:19was able to play them.
- 32:20Make sure you check out that video I did
- 32:22at the top uh
- 32:23I watched it. Yeah, I watched it. Yeah.
- 32:25All right. It's it's out for for
- 32:27members, but it's not out for everybody
- 32:28else yet. Dude, the Castlevania is also
- 32:30one of one of my absolute favorite
- 32:32games. See, you see how we keep going
- 32:33back to the NES and how
- 32:35it seems inspirational. Yeah, what an
- 32:38effect that system had on on everything
- 32:40else.
