- 0:00Artificial intelligence is changing
- 0:02the way people access information.
- 0:03Investors can ask about markets, economic forecasts,
- 0:07investment ideas and financial planning concepts.
- 0:10But as accessibility increases,
- 0:13it does raise an important question
- 0:15if everybody has access to the answers, what's considered true
- 0:18value and importantly,
- 0:19what does it mean for the role of a financial advisor?
- 0:21Well, we're going to get those answers
- 0:22and more right now on UBS Trending.
- 0:37Hi, everybody, and welcome to UBS Trending.
- 0:38I'm Anthony Pastore.
- 0:39Thank you for joining us.
- 0:41My guest in the studio today is Tim Ackerman.
- 0:43He's from Transamerica.
- 0:44And he is here to talk about all things AI
- 0:47but from a slightly different lens. Tim. Anyway, good to see you.
- 0:49Good to see you too.
- 0:50Thanks for having us. Of course. Any time.
- 0:52You know, we talk a lot about artificial intelligence in our day
- 0:55to day jobs where we're using it effectively, I hope.
- 0:58We know that our clients and our prospects are using it,
- 1:00investors are using it, and our financial advisors are using it.
- 1:03So as I kind of posed in the beginning and you've done
- 1:06some research on this and you've even talked to a lot of phase,
- 1:09what is the role of the financial advisor
- 1:11as artificial intelligence involves?
- 1:14What are they providing?
- 1:14Because if they're
- 1:15if we can all get access to quick information
- 1:19on markets at any time, what does the advisor
- 1:22then need to do to adjust how they work with their clients?
- 1:24Andy, that's a great question.
- 1:25We have some actual some cool stats actually, that,
- 1:29we can share with you, which was the adoption of AI
- 1:32and how quickly it's become part of everyone's life.
- 1:35It's interesting that Netflix took three
- 1:38and a half years to get a million users.
- 1:41Customers, Facebook, Instagram,
- 1:44ten months to get the same million users ChatGPT
- 1:48less than five days to get the same million users.
- 1:52Wow.
- 1:52And now it's 800 million users
- 1:55a week in terms of searches, etc..
- 1:58So it's it's unprecedented.
- 2:00You're absolutely correct.
- 2:02What we also think
- 2:03is that it's not just an,
- 2:06an AI story, but it's a people story,
- 2:08and it's about how people are using it,
- 2:11how people are feeling about it, because how people feel about it
- 2:14and how people use it,
- 2:15we're finding, are very two different things.
- 2:18There's a cute little story
- 2:19also about Burger King, and they just got a new CEO
- 2:23and Burger King came in and and the guy said, you know what?
- 2:26In the ads that you probably seeing and the playoffs right now
- 2:29and the ads are saying, hey, we fired the king
- 2:32and you're the customer, you're the king.
- 2:35And what?
- 2:36And that's getting people in the door.
- 2:37But what they've realized is ever go to Burger King and
- 2:41probably not. But some maybe
- 2:44don't look.
- 2:44Like a burger.
- 2:44No, I never eat fast food ever.
- 2:47But the people with the headsets on, they now have the T
- 2:51I've brought in Patty the AI bot.
- 2:55My god.
- 2:55So as you're talking to the person, the AI bot is saying,
- 2:59hey, there's a back up in the in, you know, the drive thru, etc.
- 3:04but it's not replacing the customer experience, right?
- 3:07So hospitality aligned with the AI
- 3:11component
- 3:12is exactly what we're seeing
- 3:13in the financial services industry, where the financial advisor
- 3:17and the customer are aligning on this great information from AI,
- 3:22but it still doesn't replace the values.
- 3:25The long history of, experience,
- 3:28the worry that financial advisor can bring to the relationship
- 3:32at this point.
- 3:32Right.
- 3:33And look,
- 3:33and as you and I of course, I use artificial intelligence
- 3:37in my in my daily work to help make things more efficient,
- 3:41and sort of use my time in other places, building
- 3:44relationships, talking to my colleagues,
- 3:46shaking hands with individuals that,
- 3:48you know, your I, of course, cannot do,
- 3:50although there will be robots one day,
- 3:52but it'll still be a metal hand and for as long as we know.
- 3:55But I think that's kind of exactly what you're talking about.
- 3:57There's the idea of instant and quick and efficient information,
- 4:01but you still kind of I think me personally,
- 4:03and I know people that I speak with
- 4:04still want that human component, a human touch.
- 4:08And that's really important for our financial advisors
- 4:11when they're working with their clients,
- 4:12because I think trust is really paramount.
- 4:15And I think trust is built human to human AI anyway.
- 4:18I think that's
- 4:19where a lot of this really is important to talk about.
- 4:23When you're looking at investors saying,
- 4:24why would I work with a financial advisor?
- 4:26I can do all this on my own.
- 4:27They don't have that personal human touch.
- 4:29They don't know them
- 4:31the way, you know, like the computer is not going to know them
- 4:33the way a human knows them.
- 4:34The advisor community has spent 20 years
- 4:38with a customer or a client.
- 4:39Building the trust, knowing the family, understanding the estate.
- 4:43And people are not spreadsheets.
- 4:45So when people interact, you get a better outcome with AI,
- 4:50but you're not getting the same confidence, stability
- 4:54and security
- 4:55that a financial advisor provides in the relationship.
- 4:59We think that it's only going to bring the relationship stronger.
- 5:01It's not a replacement at this point. Right.
- 5:04And, you know, my dad used to say,
- 5:07just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
- 5:10He would tell my my two knucklehead brothers all the time, right?
- 5:14As we're beating each other up.
- 5:16Right.
- 5:17And and it's just that. Right?
- 5:19I mean, there are rules of engagement here
- 5:21that the financial services industry is looking at.
- 5:23I just spent some time in DC a couple weeks ago,
- 5:25listening to some lobbyists about how they're thinking
- 5:29about the engagement with the financial services industry.
- 5:32And it's it's absolutely wonderful and inspiring and not scary
- 5:36that we're putting in rules of engagement
- 5:38to enhance the relationship and bring more thoughtful outcomes
- 5:42and more efficient use of the client's time with the advisor.
- 5:45I think it's just I think it's great.
- 5:47Yeah, I do too, you know,
- 5:48and you and I talk to advisors all the time,
- 5:50and so many of them have shared stories about how they've known
- 5:53their clients from their, you know, 20s and 30, some of them.
- 5:58And they were there when they got married.
- 6:00They were there when they had children.
- 6:01They were there when the kids got married.
- 6:03They were there when they had grandkids.
- 6:04They know their whole stories.
- 6:06And by the way, that advisor,
- 6:07he or she was invited to the weddings or the bar mitzvahs or
- 6:11the baptisms,
- 6:12you know, that's that's the human side of these relationships.
- 6:15You can't recreate that inside of ones and zeros in the matrix.
- 6:20I think that's a really important message to bring,
- 6:23is that this is a human. It's a relationship business.
- 6:26And that's where a lot of the importance comes from
- 6:28when you are working with and for who gets to help you
- 6:31with the goals that you have.
- 6:32Like you said, humans are not a spreadsheet.
- 6:35I couldn't agree anymore.
- 6:36And we think of it with the three A's.
- 6:39We think of it as automate,
- 6:42augment and achieve.
- 6:44And I think when you're in that relationship
- 6:47with the financial advisor
- 6:48and the client is thinking about
- 6:49how this is going to affect their portfolios,
- 6:52if they're augmenting a strategy,
- 6:54what does that mean that those are the rules of engagement.
- 6:56Augmenting is right.
- 6:58Having a more efficient way
- 7:00to look at all of their estate planning,
- 7:01taking a look at their holdings.
- 7:03Right, making sure that everything is a second
- 7:05set of eyes on their portfolios
- 7:07in case they case they miss something.
- 7:09And then, automate is making sure
- 7:12that any of those things
- 7:13that is required that the client needs for their estate,
- 7:16they're planning their conversations,
- 7:18their meetings, is taken care of, and then finally achieve
- 7:22right together with the AI, they can achieve a better outcome.
- 7:27Right.
- 7:27So it's the three A's is what we're talking about. Right.
- 7:30And it's kind of balancing innovation and responsibility.
- 7:33And obviously those are very important when you are.
- 7:35And we look we also know we've done a lot of research on AI.
- 7:39There are still hallucinations.
- 7:40There's always a disclaimer
- 7:42that says this is artificial intelligence.
- 7:44Please check to make sure that everything is fact
- 7:46checked and all that, which is fine.
- 7:47I think we've all gotten used to the fact
- 7:48that you still have to kind of check things.
- 7:50So if you were speaking directly to investors today,
- 7:52because we know that the tools are out there, I love to use them.
- 7:55I think other people do too.
- 7:56What would you want them to remember, though,
- 7:58as they're using those AI tools,
- 8:00especially when it comes to working with an FAA
- 8:02and having that human experience.
- 8:05So there are
- 8:06there's I told you that we went to that meeting in DC
- 8:10and they're using this new acronym, and I think maybe
- 8:13a public service announcement,
- 8:14it's called Jar, right, which is judgment,
- 8:18accountability and responsibility.
- 8:20Right. So those are the three rules of engagement.
- 8:23They're right.
- 8:23Use your best judgment
- 8:24when you're engaging with this accountability.
- 8:28Hold hold the numbers the information accountable.
- 8:32And then responsibility.
- 8:33You're both the financial advisor
- 8:35and the financial services industry along with
- 8:38the client are responsible for the outcome and the effective use.
- 8:41So I would say embrace it.
- 8:43It's amazing. Yeah, it's not going away.
- 8:45No, that's for sure.
- 8:46It's just getting
- 8:47and according to that stat
- 8:49that you mentioned right at the top of the show, clearly user
- 8:52ship is in the hundreds of millions we just had a week.
- 8:56Yeah a week. Yeah.
- 8:57It's it's insane to know how many people are
- 8:59utilizing it every single day.
- 9:00Here's here's how it's affecting people's lives. Right.
- 9:03So I do work for an insurance company.
- 9:05Let's talk about the experience that clients
- 9:07had getting life insurance for their states, etc..
- 9:10Right?
- 9:11I mean, we would send somebody to your house,
- 9:14we would, you know, take your blood pressure and the whole thing.
- 9:17Right. And it was like disturbing.
- 9:19Well, with I now we have what's called instant decision.
- 9:24I goes out to the universe, takes a look at your online
- 9:27profiles and everything, your health records
- 9:29and everything, and then can make a pretty good assessment.
- 9:33Right. So it's innovating.
- 9:35We're partnering with AI
- 9:37to make sure that there's a better outcome for the customer.
- 9:41So I think it's exciting. It's a we're not going away from it.
- 9:43Yeah it is it is exciting.
- 9:45And it's again, as long as people are using it
- 9:47responsibly again, that word to use that Jar acronym,
- 9:51it's really important to remember the are in there.
- 9:53So if you want to leave investors, you're our audience here.
- 9:56You want to leave them
- 9:56with one final thought, Tim,
- 9:58based on what your research is showing,
- 10:00what we talked about, what would that final thought be?
- 10:02Embrace it, live it, use it, use it in your life
- 10:07daily and bring it into your conversations
- 10:09with the financial services industry.
- 10:11It's just not going anywhere and it's going to be helpful.
- 10:13Excellent excellent.
- 10:14Thank you Tim. Always good to see you.
- 10:16Always great to see.
