Latest / Unlocking The Paradigm Portal / Emotional Meter: Circling Back
Transcript
- 0:01If you did the practice for Monday, for your emotional
- 0:05meter, hand on your chest, three times a day, just noticing, I
- 0:08want to ask you something. How many times did you forget?
- 0:13Because I want to be honest with you, I forget too.
- 0:16And I'm the one who taught you the practice.
- 0:17And I still have whole afternoons where I look up at
- 0:204:00 PM and realize I haven't checked in once, not because I
- 0:25don't care, but because I got swept up in what I was doing and
- 0:28the meter went underground again and my body was managing things
- 0:32without me for hours. And that's not failure, That's
- 0:35being human. Because this practice of
- 0:37checking in with your emotional meter, it's never about
- 0:40remembering every time. The practice is about what you
- 0:43do when you realize you forgot. And by the way, welcome back to
- 0:47unlocking the Paradigm portal. My name is Sarah.
- 0:50So here's the thing. Nobody tells you when they hand
- 0:52you a somatic practice. You're going to get caught up
- 0:55again. You're going to fall right back
- 0:58into the pattern you've been in your whole life.
- 1:01You're going to push through, perform, accumulate, override,
- 1:05manage everyone else's feelings before yours, answer emails with
- 1:09a shoulder that's climbed up to your ear, and make dinner with
- 1:13your jaw clenched so tight you don't even feel it anymore.
- 1:16You're going to forget you even have a meter and it has nothing
- 1:21to do with not trying because the pattern you're overriding is
- 1:2520304050, sometimes 60 years deep.
- 1:29And it has muscle memory, it has momentum.
- 1:32It was the operating system you were running long before I
- 1:36showed up talking about chest sensations.
- 1:38And three times a day check insurance. 2 days of a new
- 1:41practice does not undo all those years of old wiring.
- 1:45Not for you, not for me, not for anyone.
- 1:48And so the question was never going to be, will you stay in it
- 1:51perfectly? The question is, when you notice
- 1:55that you've left, will you come back?
- 1:58So the real work isn't the practice, The real work is the
- 2:02circling back. It's the moment you're 3 hours
- 2:05into your day and you suddenly remember, oh, I haven't checked
- 2:07in once. And it's the moment you're in
- 2:10the middle of a hard conversation and you realize
- 2:12you've been holding your breath for two full minutes.
- 2:16And it's the moment you catch your own jaw clenched, your
- 2:18shoulders up by your ears, your stomach, and a knot.
- 2:21And instead of powering through like you always have, you pause.
- 2:26And the pause is the entire practice, not the scheduled
- 2:29check in. The moment of catching yourself
- 2:32and choosing to return because the pattern will always try to
- 2:36pull you back. That's what old wiring does.
- 2:39It doesn't ask your permission, It just runs.
- 2:42The meter doesn't work because you installed it 2 days ago.
- 2:46The meter works because every time you remember, you come back
- 2:49to it. Every time, again and again,
- 2:53without making a project out of how many times you forgot.
- 2:57And here's where most people lose it.
- 2:59They forget it for an afternoon. They remember, and instead of
- 3:02just coming back, they spend the next 20 minutes beating
- 3:05themselves out for having forgotten.
- 3:08I can't believe I didn't notice. Why am I so bad at this?
- 3:11I'm never going to actually remember to do this or other
- 3:15people probably have no trouble with this.
- 3:18Comparative suffering drives me nuts.
- 3:21So stop the shame spiral is the pattern.
- 3:24It's the same old override dressed up as self-awareness and
- 3:28it's not checking in with your meter, it's attacking yourself
- 3:32for not checking in with your meter.
- 3:34Those are not the same thing. The circle back is simple.
- 3:38It's not a ceremony. You don't need to process why
- 3:41you forgot. You don't need to make it mean
- 3:43something about your character. You just put your hand on your
- 3:46chest and you ask what's here and you listen for a sensation.
- 3:51That's it. 10 seconds. Moving on.
- 3:54The shame takes longer than the practice.
- 3:56So drop the shame. Keep the practice.
- 3:59So yesterday afternoon I realized I've been going hard
- 4:02since like 5:00 in the morning and I was in the middle of
- 4:05something and I looked up and I noticed my chest felt like
- 4:09someone had parked a small car on it.
- 4:12I hadn't checked in once all day and old me would have pushed
- 4:16through until dinner, powered through the weight, and promised
- 4:19myself a break later that never actually came, and instead I put
- 4:23my hand on my chest. I breathed toward the weight.
- 4:26I didn't try to fix it, I just acknowledged it was there.
- 4:29And here's what happened. I didn't magically feel light,
- 4:33and I didn't have some profound somatic breakthrough.
- 4:36Something just softened just a little bit and the car got
- 4:39smaller and I was able to decide from inside my body instead of
- 4:44from inside the override, what I actually had the capacity to do
- 4:49next. That's the whole payoff.
- 4:51It's not dramatic and it's not cinematic.
- 4:54It's just I got to make the next decision from my actual current
- 4:59capacity instead of from a version of me that was
- 5:02pretending to have more than I had.
- 5:04So right now, wherever you are, whatever you're doing, put your
- 5:07hand on your chest. Maybe you've been doing the
- 5:09practice. Maybe you've forgotten entirely
- 5:12between Monday and right now. Maybe you did it once and told
- 5:15yourself you'd get to it later, and all of that is fine.
- 5:19You're here now. That's the circle back.
- 5:23So what's here right now? Is it heavy?
- 5:26Is it light, tight, loose, warm, cold, buzzing still?
- 5:32Does it feel really quiet? Don't fix it.
- 5:35Don't name it, don't explain it. Just notice.
- 5:38That's your meter. You didn't lose it.
- 5:40It was never gone. You just stopped listening for a
- 5:43while and then you came back. And that coming back, that is
- 5:47the practice forever. So I want you to stop measuring
- 5:52this practice by how many times you remember.
- 5:55This is not a competition. You don't earn a prize.
- 5:58Measure it instead by how quickly you come back when you
- 6:00notice you've left. At first it might be days, it
- 6:05might be hours. A whole afternoon might pass
- 6:08before you realize you've been in Override.
- 6:10But as you keep checking in, then it'll become an hour, then
- 6:1430 minutes, then five, and eventually you'll catch yourself
- 6:18mid clench, mid shallow breath, mid holding it all together.
- 6:23And that's when you know the meter is fully back online.
- 6:27Not because you never leave it, because the distance between
- 6:30leaving and returning keeps getting shorter.
- 6:33That's the whole work, closer and closer and closer to home,
- 6:37until home is the default state and leaving it starts to feel
- 6:41like the exception. So you're going to get caught up
- 6:44again. You're going to go a whole day
- 6:46this week or a few days this week without checking in once.
- 6:50And that's not failure. The failure is letting that
- 6:53become the reason you stop entirely.
- 6:56You forget, you come back. That's it.
- 6:59It's pretty simple, right? So hand on your chest, what's
- 7:02here right now and just try to remember.
- 7:06And if you forget, that's OK, come back to it.
- 7:09And I will be back Friday with some more info on this.
- 7:12So leave me a note, send me an e-mail like share, subscribe,
- 7:16all the things, come back for more and let's keep checking in.
- 7:20Have a wonderful Wednesday.
