- 0:00Hi everybody, and welcome back to the Elon Musk podcast.
- 0:03In this episode, we're turning our attention to the recent
- 0:06strides made as SpaceX is Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas.
- 0:10This is a particular focus on the ongoing testing phase of the
- 0:14Starship program down there. Now from the static fire
- 0:16testings of the Raptor engines to the implementation of the new
- 0:20water deluge system, we'll be discussing how these key
- 0:23operations contribute to the program's ambitious objectives
- 0:27of an orbital test flight, hopefully sometime in 2023 or
- 0:31maybe early 2024. And we're also going to explore
- 0:34the journey of Booster Nine. It's recent trials on the
- 0:36orbital launch mount, the OLM, and what these developments
- 0:39signify for the future of the Starship.
- 0:42Now before we get into the details, we're taking a quick

- 0:55So stay tuned. Just last week, Spacex's
- 0:58ambitious Starship program shifted gears and ventured into
- 1:00a critical phase of testing with a focus on Booster 9, the water
- 1:04deluge system, and other core aspects of the program's
- 1:07operations of Spacex's Starbase, Texas.
- 1:10Now the significant recent activities have cleared the path
- 1:13for an intensive period of evaluations commencing with
- 1:16static test firings of the Raptor engines facilitated by
- 1:19the water deluge system and an array of large test windows were
- 1:23publicized beginning on Friday. Indicative of an ambitious
- 1:26testing schedule, the agenda comprises 2 separate events, a
- 1:30spin prime test, a necessary precursor to a static fire test
- 1:34involving and as yet unspecified number of engines.
- 1:38And on Thursday, July 20th, SpaceX hoisted Booster 9 out of
- 1:42the orbital launch mount following its transition from
- 1:44the production vicinity of Starbase to the orbital
- 1:48launchpad. This monumental move was made
- 1:50feasible by the significant amount of work undertaken at the
- 1:53OLM and Launchpad area ahead of the proof test on the booster
- 1:58earmarked for the forthcoming Starship launch.
- 2:01Now Sunday, July 23rd marked another significant milestone as
- 2:04Booster Nine was filled with liquid oxygen and liquid
- 2:07nitrogen in the methane tank. Both tanks reach full capacity
- 2:11during the testing of the booster on the OLM, the first
- 2:14instance since Starship's eventful made in flight on April
- 2:1820th. Now the test adopted an extended
- 2:21holding period where cryogenic fluids were allowed to remain in
- 2:24the tanks where the booster underwent AD tanking process
- 2:27that spans several hours. Once the test had concluded,
- 2:31workers open an access door at the base of the liquid oxygen
- 2:34tank for inspection. Simultaneously, while the team
- 2:37inspected the liquid oxygen tank on Booster 9, the groundwork for
- 2:41the subsequent key phase of the boosters testing regime was
- 2:44being laid. The water deluge system, which
- 2:47had been successfully tested at partial pressure earlier in the
- 2:50month, was ready for a full pressure examination.
- 2:53The full pressure test on July 28th met the mark as an outpour
- 2:57of water jetted from steel plates underneath the OLM.
- 3:01The system was designed to release water in an angle to
- 3:03avoid the Raptor analysis. Now this water release endured
- 3:06for a span of about 8 to 10 seconds, as was followed by an
- 3:10audibly potent release of pressure from the water tank
- 3:13farm located behind the launch tower.
- 3:15So inside the system the holes are geometrically arranged to
- 3:18form a hexagon matching the positions of the outer 20 Raptor
- 3:22engines on the booster. Now ship 28 was relocated to the
- 3:26former Massey's gun range, though now on SpaceX testing
- 3:29ground on Friday, July 21st for proof testing using cryogenic
- 3:33fluids. Concurrently, Booster 10 made
- 3:36its exit from Massey's and arrived at the Rocket Garden
- 3:39adjacent to the production site. In the early hours of Saturday,
- 3:42July 22nd, a visible frost line on Ship 20 eights, liquid oxygen
- 3:46and methane tanks suggested the successful loading of cryogenic
- 3:50fluids. On July 28th.
- 3:52The ship, furnished with fins, tiles and a payload Bay, is
- 3:55anticipated to be transported back to the production site for
- 3:58the installation of its Raptor engines.
- 4:00Future plans for Ship 28 include coupling with Booster 10 for the
- 4:04third Starship test launch now. The extensive production and
- 4:08testing out or taken at Starbase has not been limited to ships
- 4:11and boosters though. Smaller test components have
- 4:13been employed to scrutinize various features and tolerances
- 4:16of these vehicles. Ship 24.2 is one of those.
- 4:20Test rigs is designed to evaluate the payload based
- 4:23system ahead of its utilization to deploy full size Starlink
- 4:27Version 2 satellites and another recent test article features a
- 4:30hot staging ring nestled between an aftering for the ship and top
- 4:35section of a booster. This was transported to Massey's
- 4:37on Sunday, July 30th for structural testing and the hot
- 4:41staging ring will be incorporated into Booster 9 and
- 4:43subsequent vehicles to streamline the stage separation
- 4:47procedure during flight because it didn't work very well on the
- 4:50original integrated flight Test #1.
- 4:53Now the separation, that is, there was no hot staging ring in
- 4:57the first Test. Now while preparations for Ship
- 4:5920 gates flight continue, Ship 25 has had missing tiles
- 5:03installed and has been affixed to a crane for a future lift.
- 5:06It's going to fly a top Booster 9 for the upcoming second
- 5:09Starship test flight Now, as ships 25 and 20 under go at
- 5:13preparations for future flights, other vehicles such as Ship 30
- 5:16have commenced construction. And to make room for these new
- 5:19endeavors, older ships like Ship 27 and Ship 15 have gone the way
- 5:24of the Dodo. They're gone.
- 5:26They've been dismantled in the latter, a landmark vehicle and
- 5:28Starships journey, being the first full vehicle with fins to
- 5:32successfully complete a landing, was disassembled on Wednesday,
- 5:35July 26, and despite the ships boosters and the orbital launch
- 5:39site drawing the most attention, the production facilities of
- 5:42Starbase are undergoing significant upgrades as well.
- 5:45The final sections of a new processing high Bay are being
- 5:48installed on the existing structure.
- 5:50It's anticipated that this new facility will soon commence
- 5:53vehicle processing. The expansion of the Star
- 5:55Factory, the planned replacement for the current factory tents,
- 5:58is underway too. Another building on site appears
- 6:01to house stacks of full size Starlink V2 satellites,
- 6:04preparing them for future launches.
- 6:06It's yet to be determined whether Ship 28 will have the
- 6:09honor of deploying the spacecraft first, or if it'll be
- 6:12a ship later on. Now when the Days to come static
- 6:16fire test of Booster 9 is scheduled, This critical test,
- 6:19potentially involving possibly all 33 engines, will stress test
- 6:23the deluge system and steel plates as well as the redesigned
- 6:27OLM and a spin prime test preceding the static fire is
- 6:31also on the cards. And in an attempt to shield the
- 6:34launchpad and Starship from a potential rock tornado, SpaceX
- 6:38is heavily reliant on an upside down shower head, so to speak.
- 6:42As Elon Musk has said, this system is integral to the goal
- 6:46of achieving rapid reusability of the launchpad, which is vital
- 6:50for Starlink version 2, Artemis lunar missions, Mars missions
- 6:54and other applications of the Starship system in the future.
