June 18 - The Cost of Faithful Friendship · Bible Chat Devotional

• 0:02
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
• 0:06
rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, June 18th.
• 0:11
The power of words and loyalty. Think about the most impactful
• 0:16
words that have ever been spoken to you.
• 0:19
Maybe they were words of encouragement from a teacher who
• 0:22
saw something in you when you couldn't see it yourself.
• 0:25
Maybe they were cruel words from someone who should have known
• 0:28
better, words that still echo sometimes years later.
• 0:32
  Words carry extraordinary weight.
• 0:34
They shape how we see ourselves, how we treat others, and what we
• 0:38
believe is possible. Proverbs chapter 18, verses 6
• 0:43
and seven show the destructive end of that spectrum.
• 0:46
A fool's lips walk into a fight, and his mouth invites a beating.
• 0:51
A fool's mouth is his ruin, and his lips are a snare to his
• 0:54
life. The fool doesn't just get into
• 0:57
trouble because of what happens to them.
• 0:59
They create their own trouble through careless, harmful, or
• 1:02
reckless words. The mouth becomes a trap, but
• 1:06
words can also be a lifeline. In First Samuel chapter 20,
• 1:10
verse 4, Jonathan says to David, in one of the most powerful
• 1:14
expressions of friendship in all of Scripture, Whatever you say,
• 1:18
I will do for you. David was running for his life.
• 1:22
He didn't know who he could trust.
• 1:24
And Jonathan, who had everything to lose by choosing his friend
• 1:28
over his father, the king said simply, I am with you.
• 1:32
I'm all in whatever you need. That's loyalty.
• 1:37
And Psalm 71 reminds us that even as we age, as circumstances
• 1:41
change, as strength fades, we can cling to the one who never
• 1:45
abandons us. Verse 9 says, do not cast me off
• 1:49
in the time of old age. Forsake me.
• 1:51
Not when my strength is spent. God's faithfulness isn't
• 1:55
  seasonal. It doesn't run out.
• 1:57
Whether you're 14 or 44, He holds you.
• 2:01
Here's the take away for today. Be someone whose words build
• 2:05
rather than break. Be the person in your friend
• 2:07
group who speaks life, who defends rather than gossips, who
• 2:11
shows up with loyalty when things get hard.
• 2:14
That kind of friendship is rare, and it's desperately needed.
• 2:18
And when your own words fail or people's words hurt you, God's
• 2:22
words about you are the ones that ultimately define you.
• 2:26
Let's pray. Heavenly Father, thank you for
• 2:29
the power of words and for the gift of loyal friendship.
• 2:33
Help us to speak with care, to encourage the people around us,
• 2:37
and to be the kind of friend who shows up in adversity.
• 2:40
And in the moments when words have hurt us or we feel
• 2:43
abandoned, remind us of your faithfulness that you will never
• 2:47
cast us off or forsake us in Jesus name, Amen.
• 2:53

Proverbs chapter 18 verses six to seven World English Bible A
• 3:54
fool's lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings.
• 3:58
A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a
• 4:01
snare to his soul. Psalm Chapter 71 World English
• 4:05
Bible In you, Yahweh, I take refuge.
• 4:09
Never let me be disappointed. Deliver me in your righteousness
• 4:12
and rescue me. Turn your ear to me and save me.
• 4:16
Be to me a rock of refuge to which I may always go.
• 4:19
Give the command to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.
• 4:24
Rescue me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the hand of
• 4:27
the unrighteous and cruel man, for you are my hope.
• 4:31
Lord Yahweh, my confidence from my youth I have relied on You
• 4:34
from the womb. You are He who took me out of my
• 4:37
mother's womb. I will always praise You.
• 4:40
I am a marvel to many, but you are my strong refuge.
• 4:44
My mouth shall be filled with your praise, with your honor all
• 4:47
day long. Don't reject me in my old age.
• 4:50
Don't forsake me when my strength fails.
• 4:53
For my enemies talk about me. Those who watch for my soul
• 4:56
conspire together, saying God has forsaken him.
• 5:00
Pursue and take him, for no one will rescue him.
• 5:03
God, don't be far from me. My God, hurry to help me.
• 5:07
Let my accusers be disappointed and consumed.
• 5:10
Let them be covered with disgrace and scorn who want to
• 5:13
harm me. But I will always hope and will
• 5:16
add to all of your praise. My mouth will tell about Your
• 5:20
righteousness and of Your salvation all day, though I
• 5:23
don't know its full measure. I will come with the mighty acts
• 5:26
of the Lord Yahweh. I will make mention of Your
• 5:29
  righteousness, even of yours alone.
• 5:32
God, you have taught me from my youth until now.
• 5:35
I have declared Your wondrous works, yes, even when I am old
• 5:39
and Gray haired. God, don't forsake me until I
• 5:43
have declared your strength to the next generation.
• 5:45
You're might to everyone who is to come.
• 5:48
Your righteousness also God reaches to the heavens.
• 5:51
You have done great things. God, who is like you, You who
• 5:55
have shown us many and bitter troubles, You will let me live.
• 5:59
You will bring us up again from the depths of the earth.
• 6:01
Increase my honor and comfort me again.
• 6:04
I will also praise you with the harp for your faithfulness.
• 6:07
My God, I sing praises to you with a liar, Holy One of Israel,
• 6:12
My lips shall shout for joy. My soul which you have redeemed,
• 6:15
sings praises to you. My tongue will also talk about
• 6:19
your righteousness all day long. For they are disappointed and
• 6:23
they are confounded who want to harm me.
• 6:25
First Samuel chapter 20 World English Bible David fled from
• 6:31
Naoth in Rama and came and said before Jonathan, What have I
• 6:35
  done? What is my iniquity?
• 6:38
What is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?
• 6:41
He said to him, far from it, you will not die.
• 6:44
Behold, my father does nothing either great or small, but that
• 6:47
he discloses it to me. Why would my father hide this
• 6:51
thing from me? It is not so.
• 6:54
David swore moreover, and said, Your father knows well that I
• 6:58
have found favor in your eyes, and he says, don't let Jonathan
• 7:01
know this, lest he be grieved. But truly, as Yahweh lives and
• 7:06
as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death.
• 7:09
Then Jonathan said to David, Whatever your soul desires, I
• 7:13
will even do it for you. David said to Jonathan, Behold,
• 7:17
tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to dine with the
• 7:20
king, but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the
• 7:24
third day at evening. If your father misses me at all,
• 7:28
then say David earnestly asked leave of me, that he might run
• 7:32
to Bethlehem, his city, for it is the yearly sacrifice there
• 7:35
for all the family. If he says it is well, your
• 7:40
servant shall have peace. But if he is angry, then know
• 7:43
that evil is determined by him. Therefore deal kindly with your
• 7:48
servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of
• 7:51
Yahweh with you. But if there is iniquity in me,
• 7:53
kill me yourself, for why should you bring me to your father?
• 7:58
Jonathan said. Far be it from you, for if I
• 8:00
should at all know that evil were determined by my father to
• 8:03
come on you, then wouldn't I tell you that?
• 8:07
Then David said to Jonathan. Who will tell me if your father
• 8:10
answers you roughly? Jonathan said to David.
• 8:13
Come, let's go out into the field.
• 8:16
They both went out into the field.
• 8:19
Jonathan said to David by Yahweh the God of Israel, when I have
• 8:23
sounded my father about this time tomorrow or the third day,
• 8:26
behold, if there is good toward David, won't I then send to you
• 8:31
and disclose it to you? Yahweh?
• 8:34
Do so to Jonathan, and more also should it please my Father to do
• 8:37
you evil, if I don't disclose it to you and send you away, that
• 8:41
you may go in peace. May Yahweh be with you as He has
• 8:45
been with my Father. You shall not only show me the
• 8:48
loving kindness of Yahweh while I still live that I not die, but
• 8:53
you shall also not cut off your kindness from my house forever.
• 8:56
No, not when Yahweh has cut off every one of the enemies of
• 9:00
David from the surface of the earth.
• 9:03
So Jonathan made a covenant with David's house, saying Yahweh
• 9:08
will require it at the hand of David's enemies.
• 9:11
Jonathan caused David to swear again for the love that he had
• 9:14
to him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
• 9:18
Then Jonathan said to him, Tomorrow is the new moon and you
• 9:22
will be missed because your seat will be empty.
• 9:25
When you have stayed three days, go down quickly and come to the
• 9:29
place where you hid yourself when this started and remain by
• 9:32
the stone Ozil I will shoot 3 arrows on its side as though I
• 9:36
shot at a mark. Behold I will send the boy
• 9:39
saying go find the arrows. If I tell the boy, behold, the
• 9:43
arrows are on the side of you, take them, then come, for there
• 9:47
is peace to you and no danger as Yahweh lives.
• 9:50
But if I say this to the boy, behold, the arrows are beyond
• 9:53
you, then go your way, for Yahweh has sent you away.
• 9:58
Concerning the matter which you and I have spoken of.
• 10:00
Behold, Yahweh is between you and me forever.
• 10:04
So David hid himself in the field.
• 10:07
When the new moon had come, the king sat himself down to eat
• 10:10
food. The king sat on his seat, as at
• 10:13
other times, even on the seat by the wall, and Jonathan stood up,
• 10:17
and Abner sat by Saul's side. But David's place was empty.
• 10:22
Nevertheless, Saul didn't say anything that day, for he
• 10:24
thought, something has happened to him.
• 10:27
He is not clean. Surely he is not clean on the
• 10:31
next day after the new moon, The second day, David's place was
• 10:35
empty. Saul said to Jonathan, his son,
• 10:38
Why doesn't the son of Jesse come to eat either yesterday or
• 10:41
  today? Jonathan answered Saul.
• 10:44
David earnestly asked permission of me to go to Bethlehem.
• 10:48
He said, please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in
• 10:52
the city. My brother has commanded me to
• 10:54
be there. Now, if I have found favor in
• 10:58
your eyes, please let me go away and see my brothers.
• 11:01
Therefore he has not come to the King's table.
• 11:04
Then Saul's anger burned against Jonathan, and he said to him,
• 11:09
You son of a perverse rebellious woman, don't I know that you
• 11:12
have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame
• 11:16
of your mother's nakedness? For as long as the son of Jesse
• 11:19
lives on the earth you will not be established, nor will your
• 11:23
Kingdom. Therefore now send and bring him
• 11:26
to me, for he shall surely die. Jonathan answered Saul his
• 11:30
father, and said to him, Why should he be put to death?
• 11:34
What has he done? Saul cast his spear at him to
• 11:36
strike him. By this Jonathan knew that his
• 11:39
father was determined to put David to death.
• 11:42
So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food
• 11:47
the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David because
• 11:50
his father had treated him shamefully.
• 11:53
In the morning Jonathan went out into the field at the time
• 11:56
appointed with David and a little boy with him.
• 12:00
He said to his boy, Run, Find now the arrows which I shoot.
• 12:04
As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
• 12:07
When the boy had come to the place of the arrow which
• 12:10
Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the boy and said,
• 12:13
Isn't the arrow beyond you? Jonathan cried after the boy.
• 12:17
Go fast, hurry, don't delay. Jonathan's boy gathered up the
• 12:22
arrows and came to his master. But the boy didn't know
• 12:25
anything, only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
• 12:29
Jonathan gave his weapons to his boy and said to him, Go carry
• 12:33
them to the city. As soon as the boy was gone,
• 12:36
David arose out of the South and fell on his face to the ground
• 12:40
and bowed himself three times. They kissed one another and wept
• 12:45
one with another, and David wept the most.
• 12:48
Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, because we have both
• 12:52
sworn in Yahweh's name, saying, Yahweh is between me and you,
• 12:55
and between my offspring and your offspring forever.
• 13:00
He arose and departed, and Jonathan went into the city.
