- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, good morning, everybody, Happy Saturday. You're listening to the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Repcolite home improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore. And before
- 0:09Speaker 1: I jump all into the show, I do want to
- 0:11Speaker 1: brag a little bit, kind of want to blow my
- 0:14Speaker 1: own trumpet here, blow my own nose. I'm going to
- 0:17Speaker 1: brag a little bit. This past week or so, I
- 0:21Speaker 1: can't remember exactly, it doesn't matter. I went to six
- 0:23Speaker 1: Flags Great America, you know, the amusement park. I went there,
- 0:27Speaker 1: to the one near DC. And when I was there,
- 0:31Speaker 1: I rode the rides, capital rode. I rode the rides
- 0:36Speaker 1: like a champion. I haven't been to an amusement park
- 0:40Speaker 1: in ages, and I really wasn't sure what to expect
- 0:43Speaker 1: when I heard that I was going to be going.
- 0:45Speaker 1: You know, I was a little bit worried that it
- 0:46Speaker 1: was going to be a lot of girly giggles and
- 0:48Speaker 1: girly screams coming out of my mouth. That would not
- 0:51Speaker 1: have been something that surprised me. But in this instance,
- 0:56Speaker 1: by the time I was on my third ride, that's it,
- 0:59Speaker 1: just my third ride, I was already climbing onto the
- 1:03Speaker 1: biggest roller coaster they had in the park. It was
- 1:06Speaker 1: the ride of Steel the Superman ride. And let me
- 1:09Speaker 1: tell you, as we ascended into you know, the atmosphere,
- 1:14Speaker 1: as that thing just went up and up and up,
- 1:16Speaker 1: I could hear people all around me screaming in terror. Literally,
- 1:21Speaker 1: I kid you not. These people were in the prime
- 1:23Speaker 1: of their lives and they were freaking out. You know,
- 1:26Speaker 1: young people, elderly people, but healthy ones. Uh, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: everybody freaking out. The people next to me, in front
- 1:35Speaker 1: of me, behind me, everybody's upset, they're hollering, they're screaming,
- 1:39Speaker 1: they're having fun, but they are terrified in the process. I,
- 1:43Speaker 1: on the other hand, I was utterly without concern or fear.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I was calm and cool as a cucumber. And there
- 1:50Speaker 1: are not many times in my life. I don't know
- 1:54Speaker 1: that there's been any times in my life that I
- 1:57Speaker 1: can say that in a large group of people, I
- 1:59Speaker 1: was the cool one. You know, I can't even think
- 2:01Speaker 1: that in a small group of people, I've ever been
- 2:04Speaker 1: the cool one. I'm not even sure if I was
- 2:06Speaker 1: alone in a room, if I'd be the cool one.
- 2:09Speaker 1: You know, that's how it rolls for me. But in
- 2:11Speaker 1: this instance, I was the cool one. I was a
- 2:15Speaker 1: real life superhero on a superhero ride. All right, So
- 2:19Speaker 1: that's the amazing cool thing that I wanted to brag about.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Now there's a little bit of info. You need to
- 2:24Speaker 1: fill in some of the gaps here so it all
- 2:26Speaker 1: makes sense. And that's this. When we would get on
- 2:30Speaker 1: a ride, before they would let us get on, you know,
- 2:33Speaker 1: climbing to that coaster, we had to put all of
- 2:35Speaker 1: the things that we could drop. We had to put
- 2:38Speaker 1: all of those things into bins, so our phones, you know, hats,
- 2:43Speaker 1: all kinds of stuff that we could be scattering throughout
- 2:45Speaker 1: the park. They wanted in bins. And for me, that
- 2:49Speaker 1: meant my glasses. And it just happens to turn out
- 2:52Speaker 1: that I am so nearsighted that the reason I was
- 2:56Speaker 1: so brave and so without fear is really just because
- 3:00Speaker 1: I couldn't see anything. You know, the world around me,
- 3:03Speaker 1: the entire world around me, was a soft, satisfying, utterly
- 3:07Speaker 1: safe and embracing blur. You know, I didn't have the
- 3:10Speaker 1: same experience of dizzying heights because I can't see four
- 3:13Speaker 1: foot beyond my face. Now, it is kind of funny.
- 3:17Speaker 1: A few years ago, a couple of years back, I
- 3:19Speaker 1: guess I noticed that I can't smell certain smells, and
- 3:23Speaker 1: I've joked on the show here that that is my superpower.
- 3:27Speaker 1: You know that if there's ever a bunch of children
- 3:29Speaker 1: trapped in a building surrounded by skunks, you could call
- 3:31Speaker 1: me and I could walk right in, no worries and
- 3:34Speaker 1: rescue the children. Now I can contribute my fearless experience
- 3:38Speaker 1: with terrifying heights to my terrible vision. It's like all
- 3:42Speaker 1: my senses are diminished, and that's what makes me powerful.
- 3:45Speaker 1: That's my superhero gig. You know, I'm diminished man or
- 3:49Speaker 1: something like that. Anyway, that was my week, you know,
- 3:53Speaker 1: last week or so, and I thought it was kind
- 3:55Speaker 1: of funny. I hope you all had a good week.
- 3:58Speaker 1: But that's enough of all of that. Let's get to
- 4:00Speaker 1: the show. And this week I've got really quite a
- 4:03Speaker 1: mix coming up. At the end, I'm going to be
- 4:05Speaker 1: talking about how to pick the right front door color.
- 4:07Speaker 1: You know, front door color it sets the tone for
- 4:11Speaker 1: your home. I think that's true. It certainly makes a statement,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and you want to make sure that the statement you're
- 4:17Speaker 1: setting is the right statement, and you can do it wrong,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and we don't want that, so I'm going to help
- 4:22Speaker 1: you do it right. I've got some things to think
- 4:24Speaker 1: about as your chick choosing that color. I'm also going
- 4:27Speaker 1: to be launching a new segment that I'm calling My
- 4:29Speaker 1: Favorite Things you can kee up the sound of Music soundtrack.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I'm going to regale with some random home improvement things
- 4:36Speaker 1: that I've been enamored of for the last few weeks
- 4:39Speaker 1: or so. They're not big enough on their own to
- 4:41Speaker 1: be their own segments, but I can sure mush them
- 4:44Speaker 1: together and make one segment out of them. They're good things.
- 4:47Speaker 1: You're gonna like that. It's just a lot of fun
- 4:49Speaker 1: and I still think it's really practical, So that's coming up.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I'm also going to be talking about a new product
- 4:53Speaker 1: that we're making at Repcolite our Deck and doc Waterborne
- 4:57Speaker 1: deck stain. Now. I talked about it briefly a couple
- 4:59Speaker 1: of weeks when I talked about decks in general, and
- 5:03Speaker 1: this time this week, I want to dig into it
- 5:05Speaker 1: more deeply. I used it on my own deck, and
- 5:08Speaker 1: I've got a lot that i want to say about it,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and I'm going to get to all of that coming
- 5:12Speaker 1: up next. But right now and the time that I've
- 5:14Speaker 1: got left, I want to talk about vacuums. Specifically bagged
- 5:17Speaker 1: versus bagless vacuums. You know which system is better. See,
- 5:21Speaker 1: I'm in the market for a new vacuum right now,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and I figured it was a no brainer that the
- 5:25Speaker 1: bagless vacuum system, right the new modern thing that's superior.
- 5:29Speaker 1: It's got to be to the old bagged technology. But
- 5:33Speaker 1: is it. It actually might not be the case. I
- 5:36Speaker 1: dug into it and I was really surprised. So I'm
- 5:38Speaker 1: taking that info to you right now. Let's look at
- 5:40Speaker 1: both different types of vacuums in terms of a few
- 5:44Speaker 1: key categories and see which one seems better. All right,
- 5:47Speaker 1: first category I want to look at. Let's start with
- 5:49Speaker 1: dust collection and retention. Now, when it comes to bagged vacuums,
- 5:53Speaker 1: the bag doubles as a high capacity filter. It's trapping
- 5:56Speaker 1: fine dust and allergens in it as it fills. This
- 6:00Speaker 1: makes them really great at keeping the air clean, especially
- 6:03Speaker 1: in homes with allergy sufferers. So bag vacuum is really
- 6:07Speaker 1: good in that regard. Bagless vacuums they use something called
- 6:10Speaker 1: cyclone technology and secondary filters, you know, a combination of
- 6:13Speaker 1: the two to capture dust. Top models you know, that
- 6:17Speaker 1: is the more expensive ones. They can perform almost as
- 6:20Speaker 1: well as bag vacuums in this regard. But your average
- 6:23Speaker 1: run of the mill bagless vacuum, the one that I
- 6:25Speaker 1: would buy, is not going to be as good when
- 6:28Speaker 1: it comes to dust collection and retention. On top of that,
- 6:32Speaker 1: whether you buy a top tier or mid range bagless vacuum,
- 6:35Speaker 1: the filters are going to clog up and they need
- 6:38Speaker 1: to be cleaned regularly, or the dust collection and retention
- 6:40Speaker 1: is going to drop. So surprisingly, at least to me,
- 6:43Speaker 1: bagged vacuums take the lead when it comes to better
- 6:46Speaker 1: dust capture, especially when you're talking about fine particles and allergens.
- 6:51Speaker 1: All right, what about ease and cleanliness of disposal, you know,
- 6:54Speaker 1: getting rid of the dust. Now, this one isn't surprising,
- 6:58Speaker 1: not at all, not to me anyway, with the bag system.
- 7:00Speaker 1: With a bag vacuum, all you do is you pop
- 7:04Speaker 1: out the bag. I'm laughing because in my notes I
- 7:07Speaker 1: missspelled pop. I put an extra oh in it, and
- 7:11Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say it. You guys can not do
- 7:14Speaker 1: the math. Just do the spelling pop with an extra oh.
- 7:17Speaker 1: You can figure out what I said and why I'm laughing.
- 7:21Speaker 1: With the bag vacuum, you just pop out the bag
- 7:24Speaker 1: and you toss it in the trash and you're done.
- 7:27Speaker 1: No dust clouds. Right, it's really easy. That sealed bag
- 7:30Speaker 1: keeps things hygienic, you know, it's perfect for allergy prone households.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Bagless vacuums, on the other hand, they're absolutely a crapshoot.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I can't help myself. It's just they're messy.
- 7:44Speaker 1: You know. It's an absolute adventure. Every time you empty
- 7:46Speaker 1: one of those things, you pretty much have to take
- 7:48Speaker 1: them outside and dump them straight into your outdoor garbage bin.
- 7:52Speaker 1: It's a big mess. So in this category ease and
- 7:55Speaker 1: cleanliness of disposal, bag vacuums definitely take the win there.
- 7:59Speaker 1: All right, what about suction power and performance? I mean,
- 8:02Speaker 1: what good is a vacuum if it doesn't have good
- 8:04Speaker 1: suction and performance? All right, bag vacuums they do a
- 8:07Speaker 1: decent job in this regard, and they can maintain strong
- 8:10Speaker 1: suction until the bag gets full or starts to fill up.
- 8:14Speaker 1: High end again, that means expensive models with powerful motors.
- 8:18Speaker 1: They can stay consistent with the suction power even as
- 8:21Speaker 1: the bag fills. But your average middle of the road
- 8:24Speaker 1: bag vacuum is going to see suction drop off as
- 8:27Speaker 1: that bag fills up. Now, bagless vacuums, you know cyclone models,
- 8:30Speaker 1: they're designed to maintain suction as that bin fills, and
- 8:34Speaker 1: they're often marketed as no loss of suction vacuums. You
- 8:37Speaker 1: know they're not going to have a drop off in suction. Now,
- 8:39Speaker 1: I don't know how completely true that claim is, because
- 8:42Speaker 1: my current bagless vacuum, it really seems to drop off
- 8:45Speaker 1: in terms of suction power if the canister is nearing
- 8:50Speaker 1: the point of being full. However, it's still better suction
- 8:52Speaker 1: than you get with a bag vacuum that's got a
- 8:54Speaker 1: full bag. So here, bagless vacuums have an edge when
- 8:57Speaker 1: it comes to consistent suction. But remember those high and
- 9:00Speaker 1: bagged models. They can hold their own. If you want
- 9:02Speaker 1: to drop the money for them, they can hold their own,
- 9:05Speaker 1: all right. What about maintenance and upkeep? Well, bag vacuums
- 9:09Speaker 1: there's less hands on maintenance since the bag really acts
- 9:12Speaker 1: as both your filter and your container. All you need
- 9:14Speaker 1: to do is swap the bag and you're good to go.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Bagless vacuums, you've got to empty that bin more often,
- 9:19Speaker 1: and it's dusty, it's messy, and the filters themselves need
- 9:23Speaker 1: regular rinsing and drying. It's that part's a real pain
- 9:27Speaker 1: to keep them working to the top of their line,
- 9:31Speaker 1: to the top of their abilities. So there's a lot
- 9:33Speaker 1: more going on with a bagless vacuum. So when it
- 9:35Speaker 1: comes to ease of maintenance and upkeep, bagged vacuums far simpler. Finally,
- 9:40Speaker 1: last thing, I want to look at noise levels. Right,
- 9:42Speaker 1: who doesn't love a quieter vacuum. That's what we all
- 9:45Speaker 1: would love. You know, as a kid, I would have
- 9:47Speaker 1: loved a quieter vacuums. So I could have watched I
- 9:49Speaker 1: Love Lucy or the price is right as Mom vacuumed,
- 9:54Speaker 1: you know, without having to crank the volume on the TV. Anyway,
- 9:57Speaker 1: Bagged vacuums they're often going to be a little bit
- 9:59Speaker 1: quiet because that bag muffles the sound. The bagless vacuums
- 10:04Speaker 1: they've generally got a more powerful motor and that makes
- 10:06Speaker 1: them a little bit louder. So the winner here. If
- 10:09Speaker 1: you're looking for quiet, peaceful cleaning, or at least quieter
- 10:12Speaker 1: more peaceful cleaning, the bag systems are going to be
- 10:15Speaker 1: a little bit better, all right. Final verdict, what's the
- 10:17Speaker 1: best choice? Well, bag vacuums are going to be the
- 10:20Speaker 1: champs for allergy sufferers, for low maintenance, you know, folks
- 10:23Speaker 1: who want low maintenance and for quieter operation. Bagless vacuums
- 10:27Speaker 1: they're going to shine for modern design. They just look cool.
- 10:30Speaker 1: They've got consistent, powerful suction and great versatility, so they're
- 10:33Speaker 1: great in busy households, you know, pets, kids, things like that.
- 10:37Speaker 1: And also, you know, multiple surfaces. If you're going from
- 10:40Speaker 1: hardwoods to carpets and back and forth, you're going to
- 10:43Speaker 1: probably have more options and a better way of dealing
- 10:46Speaker 1: with that with a bagless system than you would with
- 10:48Speaker 1: a bag system. But that's not entirely you know, straight
- 10:52Speaker 1: across the board. Anyway, there you go, enough about vacuums.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Let's take a break. When we come back, we'll talk
- 10:58Speaker 1: about a few of my favorite things. It's gonna be exciting.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Stick around, cream colored ponies and crisp apple stroodles, doorbells
- 11:10Speaker 1: and sleigh bells, and schnitzel with noodles, while gieese the
- 11:13Speaker 1: fly with the moon on their wings. These are a
- 11:17Speaker 1: few of my favorite things. You're listening to the Recolite
- 11:20Speaker 1: home improvement shows sponsored by Benjamin Moore and as Julie
- 11:24Speaker 1: Andrews is suggesting in that opening music, this segment is
- 11:28Speaker 1: about some of my favorite things. Here's the deal. Every
- 11:31Speaker 1: week or so at home, this has to happen to
- 11:34Speaker 1: you too, But every week or so for me, I
- 11:36Speaker 1: run into things that I really really like, you know,
- 11:39Speaker 1: I really really get attached to them. I really get
- 11:42Speaker 1: hyper focused on them. They're not necessarily new and cutting
- 11:46Speaker 1: edge items. They're not even always necessarily items. You know,
- 11:49Speaker 1: maybe they're concepts or results of something I've done, it
- 11:53Speaker 1: doesn't really matter. The point is is that there are
- 11:56Speaker 1: things that I've really been focused on for the past
- 11:58Speaker 1: few weeks, things that made it difference in my home,
- 12:01Speaker 1: that solved a problem, that made me happy, you name it. Anyway,
- 12:05Speaker 1: I run into these things all the time, and I
- 12:07Speaker 1: want to talk about them on the show. But they're small,
- 12:10Speaker 1: you know, they're little, and it's tough to make a
- 12:12Speaker 1: full segment out of them. So I'm going to do
- 12:14Speaker 1: this from time to time and just lump a few
- 12:16Speaker 1: of them together into a favorite things segment. And let's
- 12:20Speaker 1: jump into this one right now. And I want to
- 12:22Speaker 1: start with this. One of my favorite things for the
- 12:24Speaker 1: past three weeks has been Dun Da da dn the
- 12:28Speaker 1: power pump plunger. You know, absolutely glamorous, right, but seriously,
- 12:33Speaker 1: this thing is great. It's basically, you know, a plunger
- 12:37Speaker 1: for your sink. I suppose it could be for a
- 12:39Speaker 1: toilet as well, but I've only used it on the sink.
- 12:42Speaker 1: But it's a plunger for your sink. But instead of
- 12:44Speaker 1: that standard rubber suction cup thing on a handle, you know,
- 12:49Speaker 1: with a traditional up and down motion, the plunging motion,
- 12:52Speaker 1: this is a suction cup with a pump handle. You know.
- 12:54Speaker 1: It almost looks like a bike pump. You put it
- 12:56Speaker 1: in the sink, you block the overflow holes, and then
- 12:59Speaker 1: you pump the handle. That's it. No plunging technically, no mess,
- 13:04Speaker 1: just pump it a few times and the clog clears.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I've read mixed reviews on these, which is surprising, but
- 13:11Speaker 1: you know, it's a whole world of people trying it,
- 13:13Speaker 1: so there's definitely mixed reviews out there. But here's what
- 13:16Speaker 1: I know. I've used it three times in just the
- 13:19Speaker 1: past couple of weeks, and in three different sinks, and
- 13:22Speaker 1: each time I had that drain cleared in under ten
- 13:26Speaker 1: effortless pumps. You know, these are not complicated pumps. It's
- 13:30Speaker 1: not like a typical plunger. It's so easy. With a
- 13:33Speaker 1: household of long haired girls, you know, long haired daughters,
- 13:36Speaker 1: that's what I've got. This has been a huge help.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I've used standard plungers before plenty of times, and sometimes
- 13:44Speaker 1: they work and sometimes they don't. Sometimes I make it worse,
- 13:47Speaker 1: you know. Sometimes I dislodge the clog just enough to
- 13:51Speaker 1: really lodge it really well, so that now I've got
- 13:55Speaker 1: to take everything apart and get a pipe snake out
- 13:58Speaker 1: to clear things off. But with this thing, that's never happened.
- 14:01Speaker 1: I've had solid results every time I've used it. Man,
- 14:04Speaker 1: I don't know ten different times, like I said, three
- 14:06Speaker 1: times in just the past few weeks, and each time
- 14:10Speaker 1: absolutely perfect. And that's why it's earned a spot on
- 14:14Speaker 1: my list of favorite things. Because I hate plunging things,
- 14:18Speaker 1: but with this one, I really don't mind that much.
- 14:21Speaker 1: All right. Another of my favorite things over the past
- 14:23Speaker 1: few weeks has been done it on my freshly painted ceiling.
- 14:28Speaker 1: And yes, I know that sounds ridiculous and dumb, but
- 14:32Speaker 1: it's true. I painted the living room ceiling a few
- 14:36Speaker 1: weeks ago, and ever since I find myself staring at
- 14:39Speaker 1: it all the time. You know, I'm definitely one of
- 14:42Speaker 1: those people that judges the quality of the work I've
- 14:47Speaker 1: done on a project by how long I spend sitting
- 14:50Speaker 1: in a chair looking at it. Right, If I clean
- 14:53Speaker 1: the garage, am I out there in a little folding
- 14:56Speaker 1: chair looking at the garage? If I'm doing that a lot,
- 14:59Speaker 1: that means and so, oh, this was good work, This
- 15:01Speaker 1: was good stuff. Well with the ceiling. I'm staring at
- 15:05Speaker 1: the ceiling a lot in my living room. The kids
- 15:08Speaker 1: think I've passed out, you know. Multiple times, I'm just
- 15:11Speaker 1: in my chair with my head back and my mouth open,
- 15:13Speaker 1: and I'm just in awe at the ceiling. TV's on,
- 15:17Speaker 1: I'm not even watching it because I'm looking at my ceiling.
- 15:20Speaker 1: You know, it turned out that well. I think there's
- 15:23Speaker 1: a number of reasons that I'm so happy with it.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I think the first one is that I've dreaded this
- 15:28Speaker 1: project for a long time, did not want to do it,
- 15:31Speaker 1: didn't want to get that out. I was just I
- 15:33Speaker 1: didn't know what was going to happen. I had some
- 15:36Speaker 1: other problems in the same room. I've talked about them before.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Peiling paint on the upper part of the wall, you know,
- 15:43Speaker 1: near the ceiling. I had no reason to think the
- 15:45Speaker 1: ceiling would be a problem, but still I just it
- 15:48Speaker 1: felt like bad vibes for me. I didn't want to
- 15:50Speaker 1: do this room, but I did it, and I did
- 15:53Speaker 1: run into problems on the ceiling. I'll tell you about
- 15:55Speaker 1: those in a minute. But even with all of that,
- 15:59Speaker 1: the project still, oh went better than I thought it
- 16:02Speaker 1: was going to. And I had a lot of stuff
- 16:04Speaker 1: lined up that I was convinced was going to go wrong. Still,
- 16:06Speaker 1: in the end easier than I thought. So in that regard,
- 16:10Speaker 1: I loved it just because it's done now and I'm
- 16:13Speaker 1: just soaking in the glory of a finish project. I
- 16:15Speaker 1: love that. But on top of that, it was a
- 16:18Speaker 1: huge improvement. Now. I used Benjamin Moore super Highe, which
- 16:21Speaker 1: I'd never used before, super high in a flat finish,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and I was really surprised how easy it was to
- 16:27Speaker 1: work with. It's a dead flat finish, and I was
- 16:30Speaker 1: able to paint that ceiling in four by four square
- 16:32Speaker 1: sections and blend it altogether with no visual overlaps at all.
- 16:37Speaker 1: And really that is a near miracle, because here's the
- 16:40Speaker 1: problem that I ran into. And you'll understand why that
- 16:43Speaker 1: was such a miracle. In a second, as I'm rolling
- 16:45Speaker 1: the paint on the ceiling, I found multiple areas, probably
- 16:49Speaker 1: three different areas, one of them really large, where the
- 16:52Speaker 1: old paint, the old paint on the ceiling, which looked
- 16:55Speaker 1: like it was adhered well to my ceiling. The minute
- 16:59Speaker 1: I hit that with new paint, it was flaking off,
- 17:02Speaker 1: I mean falling to the floor, wet paint falling, you know.
- 17:05Speaker 1: The old paint came with it. As I would roll
- 17:07Speaker 1: over those areas, more and more and more of the
- 17:10Speaker 1: old paint would come off. It was a huge, huge mess.
- 17:13Speaker 1: So I've got areas painted, and then I'm up on
- 17:16Speaker 1: a ladder trying to scrape off all this paint that
- 17:19Speaker 1: I've realized now the old ceiling paint that isn't adhered well.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I'm scraping as much off as I can and trying
- 17:26Speaker 1: to reroll, finding more paint, starting to peel, scrape it again,
- 17:30Speaker 1: scrape more off, reroll all of that while the paint
- 17:34Speaker 1: is wet all around me and I'm trying to blend
- 17:36Speaker 1: it together. I got the whole thing done, and I
- 17:39Speaker 1: was absolutely convinced it was going to need another coat.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I was sure. I'm going to see all these overlaps
- 17:45Speaker 1: because of how horrible that application went. And funny, even
- 17:49Speaker 1: though that application was that horrible, it was still better
- 17:52Speaker 1: than I was anticipating. So that should let you know
- 17:55Speaker 1: how much horribleness I was planning on for that particular room.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I guess I just knew I was picking up the
- 18:02Speaker 1: vibe of the room. I knew deep down what was
- 18:04Speaker 1: going to happen. Anyway, the ceiling paint blended together, that
- 18:08Speaker 1: super high from Benjamin Moore completely blended away. I was stunned.
- 18:11Speaker 1: I was looking at the before pictures when I was
- 18:14Speaker 1: all done. I pulled up these old pictures that I'd
- 18:16Speaker 1: taken before I got the paint on there, and I
- 18:19Speaker 1: was blown away by how bad that ceiling looked before
- 18:22Speaker 1: I put the new code on. I didn't realize it
- 18:24Speaker 1: as we were living with it. But I'm really glad
- 18:27Speaker 1: I put that new code up there before I painted
- 18:30Speaker 1: all the walls. I think I would have been really
- 18:32Speaker 1: disappointed to get new paint on the walls if I
- 18:35Speaker 1: had left that ceiling alone. So anyway, my ceiling. I
- 18:37Speaker 1: have been staring at it in awe for the last
- 18:40Speaker 1: few weeks. That is one of my favorite things. How
- 18:43Speaker 1: about you. Do you have favorite things, favorite tools, favorite projects,
- 18:47Speaker 1: favorite anything that you've run into over the last little bit.
- 18:50Speaker 1: If so, let me know. I want to know about them.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Email Radio at repco light dot com and I'll share
- 18:56Speaker 1: them on a future episode. All right, let's take a break.
- 18:58Speaker 1: When we come back, we're going to dig into my
- 19:00Speaker 1: experience with repcolites new Decandoc water based deck stain. We'll
- 19:04Speaker 1: talk about that in just a minute. Stick around, reme,
- 19:12Speaker 1: we're back. You're listening to the Repcolite Home improvement show
- 19:15Speaker 1: sponsored by Benjamin Moore, and last week or so, two
- 19:19Speaker 1: weeks ago, I had the opportunity to try out a
- 19:22Speaker 1: new deck stain from Repcolite. It's called decan Doc Waterborne,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and I talked about it briefly on the show a
- 19:29Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago, But this week, I want to
- 19:31Speaker 1: dig into the product a little more deeply because it's
- 19:33Speaker 1: really really a great product. I loved working with it,
- 19:36Speaker 1: but there definitely are some things that you're going to
- 19:39Speaker 1: need to know to determine if this is something that
- 19:42Speaker 1: you want or if it's something that you should be
- 19:44Speaker 1: working with. I'll get to all of that in a
- 19:47Speaker 1: little bit. All right. The original oil based version of
- 19:50Speaker 1: deck and doc you've probably at least a bunch of
- 19:53Speaker 1: you have used that in the past. It's kind of
- 19:56Speaker 1: been our standard for decks for a long time at REP,
- 20:00Speaker 1: a lot of condo associations used at contractors. Like I said,
- 20:03Speaker 1: homeowners for decades in West Michigan have been using that.
- 20:07Speaker 1: And now as of last year, last summer, basically, I think,
- 20:12Speaker 1: is when it came about. As of then, we've got
- 20:14Speaker 1: a new water based version that we're offering, and I
- 20:17Speaker 1: think I think it's my favorite deck coding. I think
- 20:22Speaker 1: it's the best, but I do have some caveats and
- 20:26Speaker 1: we're going to get to all of that all right.
- 20:28Speaker 1: The color that I chose was butternut. It's a deep,
- 20:30Speaker 1: rich brown that looks great. There are a few other
- 20:33Speaker 1: colors that I could have chosen from, but butternut that's
- 20:36Speaker 1: the darkest one and that's what I wanted. Now. Over
- 20:39Speaker 1: the years, because I do the show, I've used a
- 20:42Speaker 1: ton of different deck products on the deck, and every
- 20:45Speaker 1: time that I've done it, usually by the time I
- 20:48Speaker 1: finish it up and wrap it all up, I think
- 20:51Speaker 1: it looks great. No matter what I've used, the deck
- 20:54Speaker 1: looks way better than it had looked, and usually I'm
- 20:57Speaker 1: pretty happy. But usually as few hours go by, in
- 21:01Speaker 1: some instances, the deck stain becomes duller and duller, and
- 21:05Speaker 1: I'm not joking about that hour's thing. The oil based
- 21:08Speaker 1: deck and dock, you know, the standard product that Repcholite
- 21:11Speaker 1: sells has been used all over the place for years
- 21:14Speaker 1: and years. When it goes on, it's oil based, it's
- 21:17Speaker 1: got a little bit of a sheene because the stain
- 21:20Speaker 1: is actually a little bit wet, and that sheen just
- 21:22Speaker 1: gives it this richness and this depth and this beauty,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and you're amazed at it and you can't take your
- 21:28Speaker 1: eyes off of it. But then it dries and that sheen,
- 21:32Speaker 1: that that depth kind of fades out a little bit.
- 21:35Speaker 1: The product still great, it holds up wonderfully and it
- 21:38Speaker 1: looks good, but you lost that that little bit of
- 21:42Speaker 1: that that beautiful furniture finish that it had when it
- 21:45Speaker 1: was wet, sometimes within just a few hours, and that's
- 21:48Speaker 1: what normally happens. I get it on, looks great, dries
- 21:51Speaker 1: out completely and now that that richness goes away. Well,
- 21:55Speaker 1: in this case with the deck and dock waterborne product,
- 21:57Speaker 1: that sheen has lasted, it doesn't fade out nearly as quickly.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Most likely, I'm thinking by the end of summer that
- 22:05Speaker 1: sheen might be dull down. I'm thinking for sure by
- 22:08Speaker 1: next spring if I want that sheen back, I'll probably
- 22:10Speaker 1: need to redo it. But right now, you know, it's
- 22:13Speaker 1: been about two to three weeks or so since I
- 22:15Speaker 1: did it, and still that deck has a finished look.
- 22:18Speaker 1: It looks like it looks like furniture. There's no other
- 22:22Speaker 1: way to say it. It's absolutely beautiful, you know. And
- 22:24Speaker 1: my deck boards are not in good shape. If you
- 22:27Speaker 1: remember a couple of weeks ago I talked about that
- 22:29Speaker 1: they're old, they're worn in places. I had a lot
- 22:32Speaker 1: of rot in a couple places that I sanded down through.
- 22:35Speaker 1: It did not look good prior to staining. But now
- 22:39Speaker 1: I put this deck in doc waterborne product on there,
- 22:41Speaker 1: I've got this sheen almost looks like furniture. It's rich,
- 22:45Speaker 1: it's beautiful, and that sheen has lasted. I can't be
- 22:49Speaker 1: happier with how it looks. On top of that, the
- 22:52Speaker 1: water based cleanup was absolutely brilliant. Of course it was
- 22:56Speaker 1: you know, it was water based products, so no mineral
- 22:59Speaker 1: spirits gloves that I had to wear. I could have
- 23:02Speaker 1: worn gloves, but I didn't need to because I could
- 23:04Speaker 1: wash up easily. I had no messy, sticky hands to
- 23:07Speaker 1: deal with, no throwing away brushes. You know, I don't
- 23:10Speaker 1: know how many times I've thrown away the big stain
- 23:12Speaker 1: brushes because I just don't want to labor through cleaning
- 23:15Speaker 1: those out with mineral spirits. And now I can wash
- 23:18Speaker 1: it all out easily in the sink, you know, the tray.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Everything I used could be washed up easily in the
- 23:25Speaker 1: sink and put away again, and I can use it
- 23:28Speaker 1: again next year. So that's a second happy thing that
- 23:30Speaker 1: I got from this. First off, this beautiful furniture finish
- 23:34Speaker 1: on my deck. I mean, it's the holy grail of
- 23:37Speaker 1: what people want on their decks, and I've got that
- 23:39Speaker 1: right now with duck and dock waterborne. So that's great.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Second thing, easy clean up. A third happy result was
- 23:45Speaker 1: the speed at which that deck dried and was ready
- 23:49Speaker 1: for use. It was absolutely amazing, And to be clear,
- 23:54Speaker 1: I'd recommend giving it hours before getting on it now,
- 23:57Speaker 1: because I'm me and my goal was to put product
- 24:00Speaker 1: through its paces. I was standing on the deck within
- 24:04Speaker 1: less than an hour, and even that it's a stretch really,
- 24:06Speaker 1: to be honest, I was on it in more like
- 24:09Speaker 1: thirty minutes. It was possibly even less than thirty minutes,
- 24:12Speaker 1: you know, twenty minutes, fifteen minutes, something like that. Should
- 24:15Speaker 1: you do that? Should you stay in your deck and
- 24:17Speaker 1: then walk all over it in twenty minutes? No, don't
- 24:19Speaker 1: do that. Absolutely don't do that. But if you give
- 24:22Speaker 1: it a few hours, it should be fine. And that
- 24:25Speaker 1: part of the product is great, you know, no more
- 24:27Speaker 1: letting it sit overnight or for a couple days. My
- 24:31Speaker 1: kid is an exterior painter, and you know, he's doing
- 24:35Speaker 1: a bunch of condos and they were just at a
- 24:37Speaker 1: house and he was telling me about it. That a
- 24:39Speaker 1: different crew had come through, you know, somebody not using
- 24:42Speaker 1: any of the products that I carry, and they did
- 24:44Speaker 1: the decks there, and those people told my kid and
- 24:47Speaker 1: the crew that he was on that they need to
- 24:49Speaker 1: stay off of that deck for forty eight hours. It's got
- 24:52Speaker 1: a drive for forty eight hours before they can get
- 24:54Speaker 1: on it. And he was asking me about that, and
- 24:56Speaker 1: I said, I don't know what they put down, but
- 24:59Speaker 1: whatever they put down, the crew was on it within
- 25:02Speaker 1: you know, after forty eight hours, you know, three days later,
- 25:04Speaker 1: they're on it and it was still experiencing trouble, you know,
- 25:08Speaker 1: as they walked across it. So there's a lot of
- 25:11Speaker 1: products out there that are going to require a long
- 25:13Speaker 1: wait before you can put it back to use. This
- 25:15Speaker 1: is not one of them. The deck and dock waterborne product.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I was walking on mine in about twenty to thirty minutes. Again,
- 25:21Speaker 1: don't do that, give it a couple hours. But even
- 25:24Speaker 1: with a couple hours, you are miles ahead of most
- 25:27Speaker 1: other products out there. So all of those things are
- 25:29Speaker 1: really really positive. But there is a catch. You know,
- 25:33Speaker 1: As I mentioned, it dries quickly, and I'm talking crazy
- 25:37Speaker 1: fast dry times at least in my situation, and I
- 25:41Speaker 1: was applying it in early May. Now when I say
- 25:45Speaker 1: all of that that it dried fast, that a lot
- 25:48Speaker 1: of people hear that as a positive, and it is.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I just talked about it. It is a positive. It's
- 25:52Speaker 1: nice to be able to get on it quicker. But
- 25:55Speaker 1: as I mentioned on the show, if you listen to
- 25:57Speaker 1: the Deck, you know the show about decks a couple
- 25:59Speaker 1: weeks ago go, I mentioned that fast dry times make
- 26:02Speaker 1: application trickier. You know, I ended up as I was
- 26:06Speaker 1: putting it down I had to adjust my application methods
- 26:09Speaker 1: to make sure that I got the results I needed. So,
- 26:11Speaker 1: for instance, whereas I typically would work with a partner
- 26:14Speaker 1: and I'd have somebody roll the oil based coding onto
- 26:17Speaker 1: the deck, you know, maybe a couple boards at a
- 26:19Speaker 1: time ahead of me, and then I'd follow behind with
- 26:21Speaker 1: a brush, you know, and work it into the wood.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Well that's how i'd normally do it. In this instance,
- 26:27Speaker 1: I couldn't do that. I couldn't do that with deck
- 26:29Speaker 1: and dock waterborn because it was drying just way too fast,
- 26:34Speaker 1: ridiculously fast. So I had to go to brushing it
- 26:36Speaker 1: straight out of the can. Now that sounds horrible, but
- 26:39Speaker 1: as I mentioned again a couple weeks ago, if and
- 26:42Speaker 1: in fact, if you're gonna do a deck project, go
- 26:45Speaker 1: to the archives. Go to repcollite dot com, click the
- 26:48Speaker 1: on the radio tab, click the archives shows or you know,
- 26:52Speaker 1: all the different collected shows, and then find the episode
- 26:55Speaker 1: on decks. I did a whole episode walking you through
- 26:58Speaker 1: everything you need to know. If the deck projects your future,
- 27:00Speaker 1: go check that out. And within that episode I mentioned
- 27:04Speaker 1: that there's a stain brush that's absolutely brilliant for decks.
- 27:08Speaker 1: It's that same stainbrush that I talked about earlier that
- 27:10Speaker 1: when I'd use it with oil based products, I'd just
- 27:12Speaker 1: throw it away, you know. And it's not inexpensive, it's
- 27:16Speaker 1: not terrible, but it was always sad to throw it away.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Now I can clean it and keep it for the
- 27:20Speaker 1: next project. Anyway, it's called the Bravo stainbrush from Wooster.
- 27:24Speaker 1: There's a four inch version, there's a four point seventy
- 27:27Speaker 1: five inch version, I think. And what makes it really cool,
- 27:30Speaker 1: besides the fact that it holds a ton of product,
- 27:33Speaker 1: is that the handle will screw off, so you can
- 27:35Speaker 1: unthread the little handle that it comes with and you
- 27:38Speaker 1: can thread on an extension pole, you know, like the
- 27:41Speaker 1: same kind of extension pole you'd use for a push
- 27:43Speaker 1: broom in your garage. So basically you can stand up
- 27:47Speaker 1: and stain your deck, you know, by brushing. So it's wonderful.
- 27:51Speaker 1: So when I say that I had to apply the
- 27:52Speaker 1: stain by brush, you know, right out of the can,
- 27:55Speaker 1: it's not what you're picturing. I was standing up. It's
- 27:57Speaker 1: really not that big of a deal. It moves pretty fast.
- 28:00Speaker 1: So anyway, with Decandock Waterborn, I switched to that method
- 28:04Speaker 1: because it was the only way to get the product
- 28:05Speaker 1: on fast enough without it starting to drag a little
- 28:08Speaker 1: bit or stick as I was brushing it, So that
- 28:11Speaker 1: was a little bit of a negative. Once I adjusted
- 28:13Speaker 1: to that, it went on beautifully, no problems. So you
- 28:17Speaker 1: do have to keep that in mind. Now if you're
- 28:19Speaker 1: thinking about trying Decandock Waterborn, and I'm sure some of
- 28:23Speaker 1: you are because and you should be, because that furniture
- 28:26Speaker 1: finish it really is absolutely something to see. But if
- 28:29Speaker 1: you're gonna try it, If you're thinking about trying it,
- 28:32Speaker 1: I'd recommend a few things to help you with the application.
- 28:35Speaker 1: First off, get that Wooster Bravo stainbrush that I just
- 28:37Speaker 1: talked about, in an extension pole, and right now until
- 28:41Speaker 1: Monday June sixteen, through Monday June sixteen, that brush is
- 28:45Speaker 1: on sale, and so is Decondock Waterborne. I'll give you
- 28:48Speaker 1: more info on that in a little bit, but that
- 28:50Speaker 1: brush is on sale right now through June sixteen, so
- 28:53Speaker 1: come in and get it now or then you know,
- 28:56Speaker 1: before that sale is over. So get that brush, get
- 28:59Speaker 1: an extension pole, and apply it that way straight out
- 29:01Speaker 1: of the can. That's first. Secondly, work on a cool
- 29:04Speaker 1: day and work in the shade if possible. You know,
- 29:07Speaker 1: if your deck is in full sun and the only
- 29:09Speaker 1: time you can do it is in the heat of summer,
- 29:11Speaker 1: you know, as the weather's starting to heat up a
- 29:13Speaker 1: little bit, then you probably don't want to use Decandock
- 29:16Speaker 1: Waterborne or really any water based stain at that point.
- 29:20Speaker 1: If you can only work in full sun and in
- 29:22Speaker 1: the heat of summer, go with an oil based deck
- 29:25Speaker 1: stain because it's going to stay wet longer and it's
- 29:27Speaker 1: going to soak into the boards even in the heat.
- 29:29Speaker 1: But if you can work in the shade and in
- 29:31Speaker 1: cooler temps, Decandock Waterborne is going to give you a
- 29:34Speaker 1: beautiful look. Now, the last thing I'd say before wrapping
- 29:37Speaker 1: it all up is it's on sale. I mentioned that already,
- 29:39Speaker 1: but it's on sale until or, I guess I should say,
- 29:42Speaker 1: through Monday, June sixteen, at all Repcolite locations. The oil
- 29:46Speaker 1: based version of Decandoc is on sale as well, and
- 29:49Speaker 1: the savings for this particular sale are really really big.
- 29:52Speaker 1: You can get the water based decon DOC for twenty
- 29:54Speaker 1: nine bucks a gallon, which is a savings of fifteen
- 29:56Speaker 1: bucks per gallon, and we've got the oil based decon
- 29:59Speaker 1: DOC on sale for thirty five bucks a gallon, which
- 30:01Speaker 1: is a savings of twenty eight bucks per gallon, So
- 30:05Speaker 1: thirty five bucks for the oil base, twenty nine bucks
- 30:07Speaker 1: for the water based deck and DOC, and again savings
- 30:10Speaker 1: from fifteen dollars all the way up to almost thirty
- 30:13Speaker 1: so huge savings. Now's the time to do it if
- 30:16Speaker 1: you've got a deck project coming up. So deck and
- 30:18Speaker 1: Dock waterborn. Really, when I think about it, it's my
- 30:21Speaker 1: favorite deck product that I've ever used up to this point. Anyway,
- 30:25Speaker 1: I don't know what the future holds, but so far,
- 30:28Speaker 1: it's absolutely the best coding I've ever put on the deck.
- 30:30Speaker 1: It's the best stain I've ever used. I'm happier with
- 30:33Speaker 1: it than I've ever been, So definitely think about it,
- 30:36Speaker 1: check it out. Remember, like I said that Sheen Luk
- 30:39Speaker 1: is going to fade over time, and you'll still be
- 30:40Speaker 1: redoing this product every year to year and a half.
- 30:43Speaker 1: It's just like any other deck product. This is not
- 30:45Speaker 1: a miracle. You know, silver bullet that you put it
- 30:48Speaker 1: on and now you don't need to touch it again
- 30:50Speaker 1: for three years. We talked about that on the show
- 30:52Speaker 1: a few weeks ago. Those things are false. It's false
- 30:55Speaker 1: advertising in Michigan. Deck products will not last that long period.
- 31:00Speaker 1: This is just like all deck products. You're gonna need
- 31:02Speaker 1: to maintain it every year to year and a half.
- 31:05Speaker 1: But I've tried a lot of deck products and by far,
- 31:09Speaker 1: this is the best looking one so far. So definitely
- 31:12Speaker 1: think about it. Definitely swing out to any Repco Light,
- 31:14Speaker 1: look at some samples, check it out. All right, let's
- 31:17Speaker 1: take a break. When we come back, we're gonna be
- 31:19Speaker 1: talking about front doors. How do you get the right
- 31:21Speaker 1: color for your front door? Not make a big mistake,
- 31:24Speaker 1: not make the neighbors laugh at you, not annoy the neighbors.
- 31:27Speaker 1: How do you pull it all off? We'll get to
- 31:29Speaker 1: that in just a little bit. Stick around, and we're
- 31:37Speaker 1: back here listening to the Repco Light Home improvement Show
- 31:40Speaker 1: sponsored by Benjamin Moore. And here's a question that we
- 31:43Speaker 1: get all the time, what's the best color for my
- 31:46Speaker 1: front door? That sounds simple, sounds like an easy question,
- 31:50Speaker 1: something that experts like us could handle with no problem.
- 31:53Speaker 1: But it's actually a little bit tricky because the truth is,
- 31:56Speaker 1: there's no one size fits all answer to that. There's
- 32:00Speaker 1: no magical best color that works for every single home.
- 32:04Speaker 1: You know, instead, the best color for your front door
- 32:07Speaker 1: is going to be one that doesn't distract or clash
- 32:09Speaker 1: with your home's architecture. You know, it's a color that
- 32:12Speaker 1: complements the style of the home, something that works with
- 32:15Speaker 1: the overall look, not against it. So with all of
- 32:18Speaker 1: that said, let's talk about a few things that are popular,
- 32:20Speaker 1: you know, some popular colors, and then we'll get into
- 32:23Speaker 1: some deeper stuff. We'll get into the weeds on it
- 32:25Speaker 1: a little bit. All right, popular colors, If you're curious
- 32:28Speaker 1: about trends, here's what people are generally doing. Red is classic.
- 32:32Speaker 1: You know, it's timeless, works on everything from traditional colonials
- 32:36Speaker 1: to modern farmhouses, so red generally always works well. Black
- 32:41Speaker 1: and charcoal they're huge right now. And you're definitely going
- 32:43Speaker 1: to see a lot of navy blues and deep greens
- 32:45Speaker 1: out there too. You know, they're rich, they're elegant. They
- 32:48Speaker 1: pair nicely with a wide range of exterior colors. But
- 32:52Speaker 1: and this is a big butt. If you're asking what's
- 32:54Speaker 1: the most popular front door color, you're probably asking the
- 32:57Speaker 1: wrong question. You know, you're looking at it for the
- 33:00Speaker 1: wrong point of view, because if you're chasing what's trendy.
- 33:03Speaker 1: And this is the case with interior stuff too, But
- 33:05Speaker 1: if you're chasing what's trendy, you're setting yourself up for
- 33:08Speaker 1: disappointment or at least a kind of a boring result.
- 33:12Speaker 1: You know. Instead, the better question to ask is this,
- 33:14Speaker 1: what color reflects my personality better? And don't be afraid
- 33:19Speaker 1: of doing something unique, especially on a front door. If
- 33:22Speaker 1: you love pastel green, or maybe something coral or who
- 33:26Speaker 1: knows what. If that's your color, go for it, you know,
- 33:29Speaker 1: make it yours. Now. The front door is a small
- 33:32Speaker 1: part of your home's exterior, it's a great place to experiment.
- 33:36Speaker 1: And you know, even though it's a small area, because
- 33:39Speaker 1: it's the focal point of it's really the focal point
- 33:43Speaker 1: of your exterior. It's what all of our eyes are
- 33:45Speaker 1: naturally drawn to, is front doors. We all know that's true.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Because of that, it really makes a powerful statement about
- 33:52Speaker 1: your exterior. You know, it really lends itself towards amping
- 33:56Speaker 1: up your curb appeal. It helps create a great first impression.
- 34:00Speaker 1: A good color choice can really enhance the architectural features
- 34:03Speaker 1: of your home. It can add personality. It can even
- 34:05Speaker 1: affect how people perceive the value of your home. So
- 34:08Speaker 1: if you're trying to pick the right color, you know
- 34:10Speaker 1: it's important. Let's get it right. Here are some things
- 34:13Speaker 1: to consider, you know, here's where we're going to get
- 34:15Speaker 1: into the weeds a little bit and give you a
- 34:17Speaker 1: little more practical, actionable intel. First off, think about the
- 34:21Speaker 1: style of your home. You know, if you've got a
- 34:23Speaker 1: traditional colonial house, colors like deep reds, navy blues, blacks,
- 34:27Speaker 1: they tend to work beautifully. If you're in a modern home,
- 34:30Speaker 1: try something bold. You know, who knows what that could be.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Maybe teal, bright yellow, you know, a deep orange, a
- 34:35Speaker 1: coral color. Who knows. It all depends on some of
- 34:38Speaker 1: the other things that we'll talk about. But go for
- 34:41Speaker 1: something a little bit bold. If you've got a cozy cottage,
- 34:43Speaker 1: maybe a farmhouse. Pastels, you know, they work, sage greens,
- 34:47Speaker 1: powder blues, they can all be perfect, all right. So
- 34:50Speaker 1: that's the first thing to think about the style of
- 34:52Speaker 1: your home. Next, look at the other colors on your exterior.
- 34:55Speaker 1: All right, this is not rocket science here, of course,
- 34:58Speaker 1: you've got to do that. What color you're siding, your trim,
- 35:01Speaker 1: your roof, don't forget about the roof. The front door
- 35:04Speaker 1: color should either compliment those or offer you know, a
- 35:07Speaker 1: tasteful contrast, a tasteful contrast for example, a red door
- 35:12Speaker 1: on gray siding that works really really well, a navy
- 35:15Speaker 1: blue door with white trim that feels classic and clean.
- 35:18Speaker 1: So keep in mind all the other colors on your exterior,
- 35:21Speaker 1: and if you've got perennials and flowers like that that
- 35:24Speaker 1: come up every single year with the same color tones,
- 35:27Speaker 1: don't forget to take those into consideration as well. All right.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Third thing, think about the mood that you want to set.
- 35:33Speaker 1: You know, what mood do you want your home or
- 35:35Speaker 1: your front door to exude. You know, colors definitely play
- 35:39Speaker 1: into this. You know, color psychology is a real thing.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Reds are all about energy and confidence. Blues they feel calm,
- 35:46Speaker 1: you know, steady rock, solid, peaceful. Green that gives a
- 35:51Speaker 1: sense of balance and harmony. You know, it's got real
- 35:54Speaker 1: natural tones, natural inclinations, you know, just the peace of nature. Yellow.
- 35:59Speaker 1: It's cheerful, optimistic. It's not going to be anywhere near
- 36:02Speaker 1: my home, that's for sure. Now It's not even true
- 36:04Speaker 1: because I've painted entire rooms yellow, because I'm entirely in
- 36:08Speaker 1: you know, completely cheerful, and I'm one hundred percent optimistic.
- 36:12Speaker 1: So think about that. Black it adds elegance and sophistication. White,
- 36:16Speaker 1: it's clean, timeless, it's simple. So bottom line with this point,
- 36:21Speaker 1: if there's a mooor an atmosphere that you're trying to create,
- 36:23Speaker 1: find a color that will help you accomplish that. All right. Finally,
- 36:27Speaker 1: last thing to keep in mind here is keep your
- 36:29Speaker 1: neighborhood in mind. You know, your house should express you,
- 36:33Speaker 1: that's true, but it's really worth considering the vibe of
- 36:36Speaker 1: the neighborhood too. You know, if you're planning to sell,
- 36:38Speaker 1: a color that fits in even while standing out a
- 36:40Speaker 1: little bit might help boost your curb appeal. And one
- 36:43Speaker 1: other thing to think about when you're considering the neighborhood
- 36:45Speaker 1: is this. And I think this is one of the
- 36:48Speaker 1: more important things that I'm saying. And I see this
- 36:51Speaker 1: mistake happen all the time. If somebody three houses down
- 36:54Speaker 1: from you picked the absolute perfect color, you know, the
- 36:57Speaker 1: most perfect color in the whole wide world. You drove
- 36:59Speaker 1: home one day, saw it on the door, and boom,
- 37:02Speaker 1: the lights went off. That's the color, that's what you've
- 37:04Speaker 1: looked for all your life. If you found it three
- 37:07Speaker 1: houses down from you, don't steal it. That's not cool.
- 37:11Speaker 1: There are still a million other colors you can go
- 37:14Speaker 1: out there and find, and many of those are going
- 37:16Speaker 1: to be the perfect color too. Go and find one
- 37:18Speaker 1: of those and let those people three houses down from
- 37:21Speaker 1: you live in the glory of their choice. All right.
- 37:25Speaker 1: We see people all the time swipe the front door
- 37:28Speaker 1: color from houses just down the road, and things get
- 37:31Speaker 1: dicey in the neighborhood when that happens sometimes, so keep
- 37:35Speaker 1: that in mind. All right. Some practical things to keep
- 37:37Speaker 1: in mind as we wrap this up. First, off, stretch
- 37:40Speaker 1: outside your comfort zone. You know, a typical door is
- 37:42Speaker 1: only going to need about a quart of paint. Painting
- 37:44Speaker 1: it is only going to probably take you a small
- 37:47Speaker 1: portion of your day. And because it's a cheap project
- 37:50Speaker 1: and an easy one, it's the perfect project for experimenting
- 37:53Speaker 1: with color. You know, if it's not right, that's not fun,
- 37:55Speaker 1: But repainting it isn't that big of a deal. But
- 37:58Speaker 1: you might find by by stretching outside your comfort zone,
- 38:01Speaker 1: you might find that you've really hit it out of
- 38:03Speaker 1: the park with your color choice. So stretch outside your
- 38:06Speaker 1: comfort zone. Second, get the right paint. Benjamin Moore's Aura
- 38:10Speaker 1: and Repcolites and Dura. They're both excellent choices. They'll clean
- 38:13Speaker 1: up with soap and water and they'll hold up for
- 38:15Speaker 1: years to come. Last thing, test your color with Benjamin
- 38:19Speaker 1: Moore's Color Portfolio app. It's a free app. You can
- 38:22Speaker 1: take a picture of your front door and then you
- 38:24Speaker 1: can try out all of the Benjamin war colors you
- 38:26Speaker 1: want on the front door. It's really really cool. It
- 38:29Speaker 1: works really really well, super easy. You'll get a great
- 38:33Speaker 1: view of what each color is going to look like.
- 38:35Speaker 1: That's the Benjamin Moore Color Portfolio App. So check that
- 38:38Speaker 1: out all right. Bottom line, pick a color that makes
- 38:41Speaker 1: you happy when you pull in the driveway. That's what
- 38:43Speaker 1: you're after. And if you do run stock, remember you
- 38:45Speaker 1: can stop out at any Repcoal Light and we'll help.
- 38:48Speaker 1: All right, that's all the time we've got. We're going
- 38:50Speaker 1: to wrap it up. But before I do that officially,
- 38:52Speaker 1: I want to remind you that our Decandock waterborne product,
- 38:55Speaker 1: the product that I talked about last segment, and the
- 38:58Speaker 1: Decandoc oil based product to the old standby, both of
- 39:01Speaker 1: those are on sale significant sales through June sixteenth, so
- 39:05Speaker 1: through Monday. Yet. If you've got a deck project coming, up,
- 39:09Speaker 1: now's the time to act on it. You can save
- 39:11Speaker 1: up to almost thirty bucks per gallon for the oil
- 39:14Speaker 1: base and over fifteen bucks a gallon for the water
- 39:17Speaker 1: based products, so definitely check that out and take advantage
- 39:21Speaker 1: of that sale before it wraps up. All right, whatever
- 39:24Speaker 1: you do today makes your paints a part of it,
- 39:26Speaker 1: and remember the next project you tackle is easier than
- 39:29Speaker 1: you think. Have a great weekend, everybody. Have a great
- 39:31Speaker 1: Father's Day to all you fathers out there, and I'll
- 39:34Speaker 1: see you next week. I'm Dan Hansen. Thanks for listening.
