- 1:21[SPEAKER_02]: lot of talk after USC's week zero game we're going to get into that and so much more big shout out to everybody joining us in the chats.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_02]: Mark says I watched all the podcast and they said the game was over at the end of the third.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_02]: Anyone who knows new the 23 points was against our third string.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_02]: That is something that we're going to talk about in this episode.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_02]: Joe Quarval, they are who we thought they were and we let centers and state off the hook.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_02]: all of that kind of stuff we're going to get to in this episode including talking about the attendance fallout which at least it can can we start there you mind I mean I mean I mind that we have to talk about it all but yeah sure we can start there I think we need to talk about attendance gates the official attendance by the way was 50,000 at Saturday on Saturday at the Coliseum
- 2:14[SPEAKER_02]: Of course, it literally there were more like 332 people there at the Coliseum, but the 50,000, of course, paid attendance.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_02]: We have to go over this every single time that this comes up every single year.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_02]: There's no way that the attendance is correct.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_02]: It's paid attendance.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_02]: It's always been paid attendance.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_02]: We've mentioned auditors' attendance in the past.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_02]: The Dodgers do it paid attendance twice always looks what the number is always way higher than it actually is Especially on a Tuesday night against Pittsburgh It's always paid attendance.
- 2:51[SPEAKER_02]: So 50,000 includes all the season ticket holders everybody you bought single game tickets Comptickets, etc.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: All of that stuff is inside of the attendance I see did release as a like a like a statement
- 3:07[SPEAKER_02]: today we won't go into the statement read the statement but the the TLDR is basically we're looking forward to better attendance going forward um at least here we we talked about this in the car cast i think we you can go back and listen to our thoughts there but now that it's been a couple of days uh what is popped into your your head since then
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: I just wanted to point out, keep choppin' asked, why did USC really support an statement to apologize to the media for having low attendance?
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: USC really sustained him because the athletic asked them for one because the athletic wrote a whole article about the attendance thing, because there is literally nothing better in college football going on right now than the attendance gate situation.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: My feelings haven't really changed about the whole thing.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: what Los Angeles is like.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: I will describe it for better or for worse.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I know you feel a different way.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_00]: I've sort of accepted that this is the way things are.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: There is what I will call the entertainment to misery index.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: And Los Angeles does not abide misery unless they are going to be provided with a certain level of entertainment.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: And the main problem here is that when it is that hot and when you're opponent is San Jose State and when it is week zero, those are things that will always factor
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: For what will drive people to the Coliseum is whether or not you are winning.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: people keep bringing up the San Jose State Game from 2009.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: That was 80,000 announced attendance, which, by the way, was 15,000 less than what the max attendance at the Coliseum was at the time, or at least 10,000.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: So like it's not like USC was selling out games in 2009, it was still reduced attendance because of the heat, because of the opponent, because of the early schedule.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: The main difference there is that USC had been on a run of like seven straight years in a New Year six bowl had just been off a rose bowl victory.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: We're national title contenders year in and year out under Pete Carroll and so people were going to games.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: The misery index versus the entertainment of the peak carolera was on the right side, where the last 10, 15 years at USC have just been slowly eroding the entertainment side of that index.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: So if the weather is bad or if the opponent is an interesting or there are any factors that are going on, USC will not get the benefit of the doubt.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: from the game-going fans in Los Angeles, because they haven't been good enough.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_00]: And in Los Angeles, it does matter, whether or not you are good.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: You see attendance drop for the significantly for the Dodgers, for the Lakers, Clippers, Chargers, Rams, MLS teams, everything like that.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: If you are not good enough, you will not see attendance.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's just,
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's just the way that it is in Los Angeles.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: That's how it goes.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: So the big takeaway from this is when more games more consistently and you will not have that kind of attendance regardless of what the weather looks like.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_02]: it's that's it and yes keep it up and it is the hot crazy chart yeah i i and i'm guessing the the 2012 if it's the hot crazy chart the 2012 Hawaii game is the unicorn
- 7:13[SPEAKER_02]: uh, in part because uh, as he was number one in the country.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, going into it when when you see his number one in the country.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but I'll put it, but I will say like the attendance for the 2023 week zero game against San Jose state was not good either.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_02]: The paid attendance or the distributed as it was pointed out in the tickets to tribute is pointed out in the chat, because yes, it includes Compt tickets too, so it's not just paid, but it's tickets to distributed with 63,411 for that game, which as far as I'm concerned, that's too low.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's that that's week zero.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_02]: I understand in the summer.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_02]: I understand, but that's with a Heispen trophy quarterback coming off of an 11 and one regular season.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_02]: Like if if that isn't going to tickle your pickle and get you in the stands, then I don't know what is.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: Well, but remember that season ended though.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: What?
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: Remember how that season ended though?
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: that season ended with it was the reason that people are going to go to that game no I think that's link of Riley retained Alex Grinch and U.S. he fans had watched the Alex Grinch defense again and again and again just absolutely fall apart and so whatever highs been sort of stuff that was going to be drummed up number one attendance also it feels like it will lag a little bit in terms of
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: you still have to build up some currency in terms of of are you going to be that good, but I think the Allege Grinch retention certainly did not help that S.C. wasn't selling out games under P. Carol until year three.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because yes, you have to build it up.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_02]: But like, if you can't build it up after 111 regular season once you win the high spin trophy, then you're not going to build it up.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_02]: And so like, I think that was when that game, when that season wasn't sold out, or wasn't over 70,000 every single week in a 77,000 seed venue, then we should have known that SC wasn't was never going to have the crowds, that the Peacaroa era had.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_02]: bar none well and I didn't miss before like it goes back to like I think you have the factor in the NFL stuff too because the 2012 season they're number one in the pre-season.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_02]: They sell out the Coliseum against Hawaii, 49, nothing they win that game in week one, and similar, not exactly the same, but similar heat, sold out Coliseum completely.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_02]: There's no NFL team in LA at that time.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_02]: There's nothing else going on.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: And now there's two and the Dodgers who are in season unfortunately have spent a billion gazillion dollars on the roster and have half of the all star MVP's in the league so you know that the draw on the Dodgers is significant right now too the way I look at it though
- 10:21[SPEAKER_02]: whether or not you're frustrated, whether or not you think it's a pot shot, whether or not you think it's lame, whatever it is, SC is the talk of the town right now for an embarrassing thing.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_02]: Whether or not you are embarrassed by it, it's beside the point.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_02]: Everyone in the country, like national, every national podcast, everything is talking about it, whether or not aside from what side of the fence they are, they're talking about it.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_02]: that, in and of itself is embarrassing, even if everybody was defending SC, it's embarrassing.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_02]: And so, how do you fix this?
- 11:02[SPEAKER_02]: You go by a ticket for Friday night's game.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_02]: Go by a ticket for Friday night's game.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_02]: Prove to everybody that this was a thing that can be learned from or whatever.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_02]: If you have the funds and you're not doing anything on Friday night, go to the game.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_02]: Go to the game.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_02]: If you were listening to this podcast, if you're watching us on YouTube and you live in the LA area, you are someone who is the fraction of the 1% in the people who watch us and watch any sort of, listen to any sort of USA podcast are the hardcore of the hardcore
- 11:49[SPEAKER_02]: because otherwise it's going to continue to be a talking point as annoying as that is so it is what it is my thing here is that
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: This is always a talking point, whether or not USC is good or bad or anything like that.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: The kickoff pictures of the call scene crowd is always a talking point, whether it's 50,000 or 70,000.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's always a talking point, which is why I'm not embarrassed by it to the degree that I get.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'm totally with you.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think going to games is one of the coolest things and one of the great privileges that we in Los Angeles have.
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: It is something that I very, very much miss being able to do on a weekend, week-out basis and the experience alone, the magic of being at the game.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: is worth the trouble of going to the Colosseum and the like.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: Where I'm at is just that Los Angeles has two NFL teams, two NBA teams, two M.O.B.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: teams, two M.O.S.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: teams, two division one universities.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's got like
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: like 90 golf courses and like a hundred malls and you know a thousand theaters and like the 99th and other malls just closed.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah and and like 30 I think Colin Coward sort of is like 31 concert venues.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like there is so much
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: competition for attention in Los Angeles that cannot possibly be understood by people who are in college towns where they are fans of that team, all of their friends or fans of that team, all of their family is fans of that team and everybody feeds off of everybody else in terms of the enthusiasm for going to games.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_00]: in Los Angeles.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's very different.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: You can you can live a life being the biggest U.S. event that you did on the planet and you can have family members who are not U.S. C. fans.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_00]: You can have none of your friends are U.S. C. fans.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: And you're just not going to grow not going to be able to sort of grow your crowd in the same community kind of way without the winning.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: Without the winning.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, the main man for six four in the chat says why don't you guys go any more legit question We would be there absolutely we would be there.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_02]: Alicia is the national Is a national sports writer for fan side.com.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_02]: She she cannot Go to games anymore because she's got other responsibilities on game days even doing the watch-alongs It's a detraction from that and so
- 14:42[SPEAKER_02]: There's other responsibilities, that way.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_02]: When we were still focused on Renatorate.com and writing content for Renatorate.com, I would be in the press box and you would be on the field taking photos and in the perfect world, we'd still be doing that today.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_02]: So, us not going to games has nothing to do with us choosing not to go, nothing to do with not having a credential anymore.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_02]: All we have to do would be asked to get a credential and I'm sure we would be credentialed.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_02]: Like, it has nothing to do with any of those things.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: If my job changed tomorrow, it is very likely that we would, we would, yeah, we'd be a games.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: Be a games, whether it would be in a media form or in, that's just, you know, getting season tickets or whatever and going.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: But also like there are other complications, and this is something that I, one of the things that annoys me about this conversation is just that, like, there's also a really privileged place from a lot of sports fans who, like, you know, I was talking to somebody who has very poor night vision and won't be going to the game on Friday because they can't drive at night.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not safe for them, and they can't see things at the game anyways, like that's something.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: I have, you know, autoimmune issues.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: because i'm extremely impacted by heat and the medication i take makes me basically allergic to sunlight so like i would not have been able even if even if my job allowed me to i would not have been able to go to that game there's a lot of people who and it's it doesn't excuse the attendants it really doesn't because there are a lot of able-bodied people who can do it but like
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I'm just super sensitive to it right now because of what I'm going through, but I think that we have these conversations without also acknowledging that like
- 16:35[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people don't go to live sporting events and they have valid reasons for doing that.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's not the only way to experience sports and it's not the, it doesn't make you superior or lesser than if you don't go to games.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: My dad doesn't go to games.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't like going to live sporting events.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: He prefers to watch from home.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, but this is why I go back to the, and you know, you raised the thing about like, it's the only thing to do in a college town and everything.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_02]: And I go back to, and I know that I say this every freaking time and it's probably annoying, there's more people in LA County than there is in about like 44 states.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_00]: So like, yeah, but how many of those are USC alum?
- 17:22[SPEAKER_02]: not, not obviously a fraction of that, but like, but that's, that's, that's beside there.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_02]: How many people did we go to school with that couldn't care less about football?
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and this is the other factor that I think you do have to take into account.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: who is the U.S.C.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: alumni base now, there are more international students than ever who are less likely to be into football, that's always that that's always been a thing that I'm not going to blame them, no, I'm not playing, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't, don't,
- 18:00[SPEAKER_00]: Harden true football fans more than it is a global school.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's harder than ever to get into it So you're then shrinking the the pool of people who can even get in and then once they're there again This is what I'm talking about with winning what I was at USC
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: It was the peak carollera and it was the hot ticket and everybody went, people who didn't like football.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody went.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: It didn't matter.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody went.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: But by the, you know, by the, by the turn of the, of the, of the lane kiffin era and into these past, you know, the, the, the Clay Hilton era.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's no longer the ticket like if you don't like football, you don't go to the games because why would you put yourself through that anymore?
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: So now you have a whole decade of alumni who have graduated who didn't immediately go and pick up their season tickets the way that you would have in the past.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: Like my graduating class would have like everybody who was I was friends with all jumped in immediately to try and get season tickets and maintain them for a couple of years and then they all let it go.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_02]: they're not that they're not that into it, you know, and the the last thing before you move on because you didn't want to talk about this to be the attendance gate pod, but the the last thing before you move on is that I thought you made a good point to me today when we were talking about this about once you don't go to a game and you realize
- 19:27[SPEAKER_02]: that the world didn't end, as unfathomable as that is, if you are someone like, you know, USC Psycho or a friend Richard who goes to every single game, it's unfathomable to not go to a game, right?
- 19:44[SPEAKER_02]: And for the longest time, that was me too.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_02]: I was unfathomable to miss a home game.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_02]: When you miss a home game,
- 19:56[SPEAKER_02]: the snowball starts to go and that's unfortunate because like you look at things like COVID.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_02]: You look at things like, you know, two NFL teams coming.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_02]: All these little reasons add up as another reason not to have the expense.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_02]: You watch the the COVID season from home and you're like,
- 20:17[SPEAKER_02]: maybe that was watching those games was okay for you and you didn't renew your tickets after the year or whatever.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_00]: Any of these things have only gotten expensive more.
- 20:26[SPEAKER_00]: I see the tickets have gotten more expensive.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_02]: And once you want to miss one season renewing your season tickets,
- 20:34[SPEAKER_02]: like coming back is very difficult.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_02]: Like I go this is a really dumb comparison, but there's this stupid TikTok clip that I've seen a million times now for some reason from a podcast about John Taffer who feels like a snake oil salesman when it comes to things to me, but he made the point that like
- 20:57[SPEAKER_02]: When a restaurant client, your customer comes in and has the perfect experience, they have like a 42% chance of coming back to the restaurant, even in an optimal situations.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's much higher for a fan of a sports team, obviously, because you're dedicated to all that stuff.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_02]: That is a prime example of like, you still take a lot of effort for, even the people you want to come back to keep coming back, if they're not used to already going, and so.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_00]: And USC made it easier to not be a game day fan.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, over the last few years.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, all right, we said we didn't want to talk about this.
- 21:45[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I spend half an hour talking about it.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_02]: I know.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_02]: If you took the over on minutes about us talking about this, I think that you would be, you'd be very happy right now.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_00]: The good thing is this.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: You can step on my segue.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I'm going to step on your segue real quick.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_00]: The good thing is this.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: If USC wins, we will not be having this conversation anymore.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_02]: I agree 100% but but if you took the over on on U.S.C., or sorry, I'm not talking about the attendance, the over on the minutes for that, see I completely screwed this up now.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_02]: I think I'm going to enjoy messing up your transitions apparently you're very good at them So I'm just apparently not I'm just giving you some challenge here You're like the cow roby getting in the way here The point is you can of course join us over at my bookie and look at some over under's there
- 22:49[SPEAKER_02]: Um, we talked about it in our season preview, uh, the over under on wins for USC this season is eight and a half.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, I, of course, put my prediction out there for 93, at least he said eight and four.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, that's right there.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_02]: So you can join us over at my bookie.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, take a take a minute away from from work from your commute, wherever you're doing this.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_02]: while you're listening to this and head over to mybookie.agc Senate Performance Code, ROT, ROT, and start your season off with the win.
- 23:19[SPEAKER_02]: Better than anything, anytime anywhere, it must be 21 plus 18 plus in select jurisdictions, terms in a condition to apply.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_02]: Gambling, problem call 1-800-Gambler, visit 1-800-Gambler.net for free, confidential supports, and 24-7 support is available.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_02]: So, all right.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_02]: Moving on, let's talk about U.S.C.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_02]: and San Jose State in SC wins 42-26, a score in which we talked about in the car cast, and at the end of the watch along, it was not the score that A, that we predicted before the game, but also not the score that I think a lot of people would have wanted to see, and in that a score that people looking at the box score having not watched the game would have wanted to see either.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_02]: Lily, you've rewatched the game you've had time to re-digest things.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_02]: Take it away.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_02]: What's on your mind?
- 24:12[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, so the other annoying narrative from Saturday is the 23 points that USC gives up in the fourth quarter.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:20[SPEAKER_00]: So, I went down and rewatched in detail those final three drives to figure out what went wrong.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_00]: How much of it was actual cause for concern and how much of it was what my impression was on Saturday that it was just a bunch of scrubs and freshmen and it wasn't a big deal.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_00]: So here are my observations.
- 24:42[SPEAKER_00]: There were 17 players that I noted in the rotation for those three drives in a granted.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_00]: I am watching the TV copy.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_00]: It can be very difficult to see numbers.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, I might have missed somebody, but I noted 17 players.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: Six of them were true freshmen.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_00]: Three of them were red shirt freshmen.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_00]: So over half of them were guys who haven't had extensive playing time.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_00]: And six true freshman is a lot.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_00]: There were veterans in there, profit brown and jaw gerrit,
- 25:12[SPEAKER_00]: were on the field at times, or I Fisher was on the field at times, the transfer from Penn State.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_02]: Stepan in here, really quick, out of Scam is still a red shirt freshman.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_02]: He is a red shirt.
- 25:22[SPEAKER_02]: You've got a lot of run-match.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_00]: That is correct, and I can't remember if I included him in my three red shirt freshman conversation there, but yeah, that's a good point.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: But these are guys who you would expect to, if it's not San Jose State, when USC gets to conference play, these are guys I would expect to be in the rotation.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_00]: And I will know that
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: the better like the players that were actually doing good things on the field were generally those guys profit brown broke up a pass zrye fisher was one of u.s. he's high-scrated players in pff um... alitha alic scram looks good when he was in there briefly Kennedy or lacquer did give up a couple things but uh... i'm going to talk about him in a second uh... set of the state was in five wide for the majority of of those three drives that puts a lot of pressure on u.s. the secondary linebackers
- 26:11[SPEAKER_00]: And the defense of line was creating pressure.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_00]: But as we talked about with San Jose, they get the ball out so quickly.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_00]: It kind of neutralizes that pressure, which is why I think Gary Patterson switched to
- 26:25[SPEAKER_00]: A very unusual, unusual formation, where they had three linemen.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: There were times where there was only one down linemen and the two ends were stand up.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_00]: And then there were two linebackers and six DBs.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_00]: threes, they were doing three high safeties at times.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_00]: It was just, it was very interesting watching that.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_00]: It was, it's not a, not a formation that I think that I'm very curious how often we will see this kind of formation.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: This is, this, this offense that San Jose State was running is not, it's not, it's not.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_00]: the offense that you will see will see most often in big ten play.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: So it could be that there was this was stuff that they hadn't necessarily worked on it on that these were these were things that guys have not had a lot of experience with in these particular kind of formations.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I, and I say that because especially for the young guys, like, there was one play that I actually sent it to our calls for both 27 friends for them to, like, help me understand what was going on.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: Because it was three high safeties.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_00]: two corners, one of those corners was Madden Reardon, who is a safety, a nickel who was Isaiah Rubin.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_00]: So there was a trio on the left side of the field that was Reardon, Rubin, and Jameson Crowder, who's also a true freshman, safety.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: And when the play snaps, Rubin bails deep and Madden sort of like stays where he is and sort of follows a receiver deep.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_00]: And the Crowder sort of goes to the same spot as Rubin.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_00]: and Jamir Robinson is late sort of covering a guy running a simple out and there's miles and miles of space and they complete a pass for a first down and I couldn't figure out who's fault it was because it didn't see like it didn't make sense where anybody was moving in that zone.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: It was the kind of thing where I think somebody, if not multiple somebody, didn't know where they were supposed to be on that play and it's not a coincidence to me that it was
- 28:51[SPEAKER_00]: two true freshmen and a red shirt sophomore who uh... unfortunately i don't i don't like to uh... real quick children panda asked is markies kagos that bad of a player uh... he's out injured markies kagos and derelict were both out injured which is why thank you as he was also digging quite deep into that secondary death in a way that i don't know that they would have for that number of snaps if they had more of that those two guys available
- 29:21[SPEAKER_00]: Back to what I was saying, I don't like to pick on individual players.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like to call out individual players.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_00]: It just doesn't feel right because for all the NILs stuff that's going on that they aren't professionals.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_00]: Last week, we had a conversation, Michael, about the term unplayable.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_00]: and how the American way of the British friends the American way and the British way are exact opposites if you are talking about primarily soccer and you say somebody was unplayable you mean unstoppable you mean nobody could could get in their way no one could drop out sure unplayable is is a like a massive massive a compliment to a player
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: In America, though, we use unplayable for the exact opposite, meaning you cannot play them because they are so bad that if you put them on the field that it will be a catastrophe.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I hate to say this, but Isaiah Rubin based on this game is unplayable.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_00]: in the American sense.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_00]: He was mostly playing at nickel.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_00]: He looked completely lost.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_00]: He was slow to react.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_00]: There was an an opportunity for an easy interception on a really really a throw from weaver that that he absolutely would have wanted to take back the kind of throw where you were I throw it in the video game and as soon as we press the button it's like oh shit.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_00]: But Rubin is so slow to react and doesn't see it that it just sort of becomes a PBU instead.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_00]: He gives up the second touchdown because he gets beat by the man in the end zone.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_00]: He commits a passenger fairings that sets them up at the goal line.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_00]: There are throws where his man is just he just beat him a couple times for easy first downs.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_00]: Even throws that San Jose say didn't complete there was one into the end zone that the quarterback basically put it too high, but the receiver was clear of Ruben.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_00]: He was he was open the only thing standing between him was Alex Graham at safety sort of standing further up in the in the end zone and might have been Tylenol Ely or somebody like that but like the match up there was was cooked.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: So the PFF grade for Isaiah Ruben was the lowest of anybody on the team as you might expect 39.3
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: This is on a scale of 100.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_02]: That's, that's roof.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_00]: And he had 27 snaps at 39.3.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_00]: He was unplayable.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_00]: And if you replace him with someone like D-Riddick or Marquise Gallagos in this context,
- 32:18[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think USC gives up 23 points in the fourth quarter.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_00]: They probably still give up a touchdown, or maybe another field goal or whatever, but like I do not think they score 23 points if you just remove one player off the field.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_00]: He wasn't the only one who struggled though.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_00]: Madden Rearden got beat over the top on that touch.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_00]: The first touch on the San Jose State scores.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_00]: And then he misplays the, I think it's him that makes misplaced the two point conversion.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes it's hard to tell, but he kind of gets sucked in by the, by the little fake hand off.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_00]: And there's just moments where he looks like a true freshman.
- 32:59[SPEAKER_00]: his pff grade 44.9 twenty six naps twenty four of those in coverage not great uh... uh... it's it's you know it's the kind of thing though where you've brought to freshman out there in a new scheme and they're going to get beat and that happens and this is why you play reared in this game and why you'll play him against Louisiana and and hopefully president state and be able to teach him out of these but like based on this performance
- 33:28[SPEAKER_00]: The depth chart that we saw going into San Jose State had him as the number two behind both safety's based on this performance.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_00]: If D. Riddick and Marquis Gallegos are healthy, I would not be surprised if they are on that depth chart instead.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_00]: That doesn't mean he's cooked for the rest of the season or anything like that.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_00]: I do have high hopes for him, but sometimes it's just too much for a true freshman that's in there.
- 33:55[SPEAKER_00]: Other guys who I thought needed to play better, and these are the bigger points of concern.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_00]: To me Robinson, he got jukeed out by the quarterback on one QB run.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_00]: He was slow to pick up underneath Routz got beat a couple times.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_00]: His grade was 57.4 on 31 snaps.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_02]: And Luke Weaver is not like Colton Joe said that they're going to see at Wisconsin, you know what I mean?
- 34:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, exactly.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I just, I'll just say I was not super encouraged by Tamir Robinson.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_00]: In this game, he is an older player who didn't impress last season as first season after transferring.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_00]: Just looked slow to react, which is not what you need from your middle line back
- 34:42[SPEAKER_00]: So that certainly didn't help USC.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_00]: And then Kenny Erlacker, I don't think he did terribly like the areas where he gave up, he gave up passes.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_00]: It felt more like good plays by Santa's a state than anything like really, really worrying.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_00]: But I will point out that Kennedy Erlacker and Alex Graham were both playing deep safety when they were in in the fourth quarter.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_00]: and I don't like I like Kennedy Erlacker more as a like it's playing the profit brown role in sort of closer to the line of scrimmage being able to sort of use his physicality underneath.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that I want him.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_00]: in coverage the way that he was, but this was also a side effect of not having redic and gaigos and maybe experimenting a little bit with where can we put or lacquer and gram if something happens to profit brown or Christian peers or anything like that.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_00]: experiment, whatever, maybe, but not that, not the biggest thing in the world, but I think safety is as a position is the biggest point of concern coming out of the game because I wasn't super convinced by Christian Pierce in that deep safety role either.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_00]: Like the drop off from bits of bits of bits Gerald, we might be talking about bits of its Gerald is like,
- 36:05[SPEAKER_00]: one of the biggest losses for U.S.C.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_00]: in a long time that doesn't get talked about enough, unless the level at safety improves.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_02]: like all American tracer yes yeah and like i i i don't know that he got the um i'm gonna say that he didn't get the respect because i i think people enjoyed watching uh but you're pretty sure everything but like i don't think people are right and books about about him the same way that uh you know
- 36:48[SPEAKER_02]: we were talking about tomorrow Ramsey the Year before or any of the other guys who have played its safety at an all-American level, all-American level, right?
- 36:58[SPEAKER_02]: Like Palanoa Huvanga, right?
- 37:01[SPEAKER_02]: Like not sort of in the in the in the same way.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_02]: And that's yeah, when when you lose those guys, they hurt for a reason.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_02]: And you're right.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think we talked about it enough in the offseason
- 37:18[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, we know that I want to go to some some notes that we have here in our rundown You compared you did some some some things about freshman someone I thought tweet and I don't think we think it was to me.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_00]: It was just a tweet in general talking about like Compare this
- 37:40[SPEAKER_00]: this year to last year in terms of the defense like the excuse of how many freshmen played like does it does it hold true and I'll all answer that with this true freshman snaps on defense in the opener of 2025 80 true freshman snaps on defense in the 2026 opener 154.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_00]: So yes, it was a bit different.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I will say that more players played last season than in this game.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_00]: And so the true freshman that were out there, the third stringers and fourth stringers that were out there, were by and large getting 20 to 30 snaps in a way that in 2025,
- 38:32[SPEAKER_00]: they used a lot more guys, but there were a lot more guys who got like 10 snaps.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_00]: And so the weak links were much more costly to USC this year, because they were out on the field for so long.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about the the positives for SC on Saturday look playful the top graded USC defender at 82.9 we talked about in the car cast the the two guys that jumped off the page for us I test wise on defense were Luke Wafel Gda have a series also
- 39:06[SPEAKER_02]: Profit Brown, you could throw in there, but wait for with the top guy at 82.9, Desmond Stevens posted his second best PFF grade as a starter at Lionbacker 77.4.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_02]: Great start of the season for him.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_02]: Fast improvement.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_02]: Coming off of a year in which I think people were disappointed with the impact that he had last year just because maybe the expectations on him were too high last year, maybe.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_02]: Um, great start for him to sort of regain the confidence and the hype going into the season, a year in which S.C. needs the linebacker core to take a big step forward, him included.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_02]: So, big, big for him.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_00]: He looks bigger, he looks more confident.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 39:48[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, he, he seemed to be reading things better.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I, I, I was really pleased with his performance.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_02]: Trent Mosley, the top-graded player on offense, 90.7, that checks out.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_02]: Kids really can go to the Trent Mosley game, but as I think we're solo and are watching along pointed out in the chat, hopefully it's a Trent Mosley game, and not the Trent Mosley game.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_02]: Is there a point of view that worries about the Zachary
- 40:23[SPEAKER_02]: Three years ago, again, Saturday State, Zechariah branch looked like the second coming of like Reggie or something.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_02]: Like incredible player in that game, we never saw them at that level ever again.
- 40:41[SPEAKER_02]: Stephen Carr.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_02]: His best game is his Trojan.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_02]: First game ever against Western Michigan.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_02]: Um, I know that like expectations or you know, they start to really mount on, on freshman that, that is just a thing, but like, how, how do you continue to, to get, this kind of impact from him without like putting the expectations to high that you, you, you, you scare off the future great performances.
- 41:10[SPEAKER_00]: I will say this about Trent Mosley.
- 41:13[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think there was ever a point where Zachariah branch looked like the gamer that Trent Mosley looked like.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's fair.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_00]: That's fair.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_00]: Trent Mosley, like, Zachariah branch was very clear that he was just...
- 41:27[SPEAKER_00]: wicked quick.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm running circles around guys.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, where Trent mostly looks like trapping his shoulder and taking on do he was taking on dudes.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: He was he was very intelligently running his routes to put him to make himself open to to give himself the the biggest opportunity.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_00]: The way he ran was just sort of silky smooth.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_00]: It didn't feel it didn't feel like Trent mostly is succeeding because he's bigger stronger or faster than
- 41:57[SPEAKER_00]: He looked like he's just a better football player than everybody else in the field.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_00]: Will it get more difficult when he faces better corners and better secondaries?
- 42:07[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_00]: Will the things that got him that gave him this level of performance will become much harder as he faces more tougher competition.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_00]: But the skill set that he showed.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_00]: looked very much like what we talked about like with McCy Lemon showed that even in McCy Lemon didn't even play that much as a freshman but when he when he finally got in there like you could see something was different and that's how I feel about Trump tremendously.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think the other thing is you have to factor in going forward ideally when S.E.E.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_02]: gets to the Big Ten schedule you have the two other receivers
- 42:47[SPEAKER_02]: we all expected to be one and two in whatever order into the kinds and trail Anderson and if you have those guys and Trent mostly as your top three that's just going to open up anything for all those guys right because you you got to pick your poison if you're the defense then you add in like Tron Baker who looked really good Cadendix and why it looked really good Booby Feaster didn't wasn't featured like the other two but uh or the other three I guess but
- 43:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think that well, and they're reverse in general, just all look really good.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_00]: One thing just to point out, like, I think this really sets an expectation for the receivers in the slightly different way.
- 43:28[SPEAKER_00]: Trap Mosley is 20 years old.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_00]: Booby Feaster is 17.
- 43:33[SPEAKER_00]: So like the difference that you could see between the two of them in terms of their development as both freshmen but with that wide gap between them in terms of age.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_00]: Hold on.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's the difference.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_00]: That's why Trent Mosley can come in and day one look like a star.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_00]: Booby Feaster is going to take more time.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_00]: What I appreciate and I don't know if you want to.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_02]: You say Booby Feaster needs some nurturing.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_00]: He needs some nurturing.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_02]: That's right there.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, the, the, the, are you saying Trent mostly is the, um, uh, the, the Jimmy Claussons, the Jimmy Claussons of U.S.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_00]: He watched the, yes, okay, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I
- 44:29[SPEAKER_00]: This is why I want to bring up a movie piece or though because as you know clearly he needs time to sort of figure out how to get open and figure out how to run his routes and sort of make an impact on a game.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_00]: But I will say like there were some clips going around where he was out there blocking.
- 44:48[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 44:49[SPEAKER_00]: doing so with Verve and doing well.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that this is one thing that really stood out to me from the game in general is the blocking from the receivers and the tight ends, especially the young guys.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_00]: was so encouraging.
- 45:07[SPEAKER_00]: Corey Sims had the highest run block grade on the team with 81.2.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to get a lot of playing time if that's what he's doing.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_00]: That's the level of blocking that he's doing.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_00]: If we saw him be able to catch the ball, but we talked about no blocking or rocky with the running backs, but
- 45:26[SPEAKER_02]: It has to be that way for the receivers to 100% look back at the guys who have been due to got a lot of planning playing time on like the Rose Bowl team against Penn State in 2016, right?
- 45:39[SPEAKER_02]: Darius Rogers.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_02]: Darius Rogers might be the greatest blocking wider
- 45:45[SPEAKER_02]: and Judas Mysterster might be number two, and both those guys were in their a ton, not only because they were just really good receivers and really helpful in all that stuff, but like their ability to block certainly helped.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_02]: And then you look at poopy feaster.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he didn't have a lot of impact in the production departments compared to
- 46:11[SPEAKER_00]: He was in there on the very first drive of the game and no blocking, no ratchee, no ready, routing, yeah, no routing, no catching, yeah, the run blocking grades for for Booby Feaster 77.4, Trent Mosley 74.0, we definitely want to have a conversation about Mark Bowman.
- 46:34[SPEAKER_00]: because Mark Bowman, also a true freshman, also had some growing pains in everything like that.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_00]: But you can see the makings of the player there already almost fully formed.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_00]: You get a 71.1 blocking red blocking grade, and a 66.9 pass blocking grade, which in the grand scheme of USC Titans, by the way, is quite good.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_00]: and you're not expecting him to be a passport because USC titans almost always are like in the forties on past blockade by the way.
- 47:06[SPEAKER_00]: So that this was such an encouraging performance from a guy who was heralded in high school for his all-around play, his ability to be a pass-catching titan but also his willingness to block.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_00]: But like in at the college level, willingness like it's
- 47:24[SPEAKER_00]: wide receivers who are willing to block.
- 47:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's willingness is half the battle.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, tight ends.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's not just willingness.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_00]: You actually have to have the size and the technique to to be a positive force in in the offense as a blocker.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_00]: And you just usually don't see that from freshman for him to come in and have the performance that he did as a blocker.
- 47:45[SPEAKER_00]: Dude, he makes me drool is about past catching, but this is this is the stuff that he motivates an offense and and this is what makes tight ends such a valuable position.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_00]: The best tight ends in the NFL, the best tight ends in college do give you a dynamic receiving option, but they also make your offense better because they're not a liability when you need to pound the rock.
- 48:11[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, a hundred percent and I think that going forward, I think that that'll be huge because you look at the, you look at the run game, the, the, the runs game that USC is putting out there.
- 48:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's a lot of inside zone.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_02]: It's a lot of GT counter kind of plays.
- 48:29[SPEAKER_02]: where there's going to be movement, lesser insights on, but like insights on split where you got to move your tight end to seal off the backside, right?
- 48:39[SPEAKER_02]: We saw that a couple of times in this game be a thing and you got to expect that from Mark Bowman, that was something that Lake McCree had to rely on being able to do and you're going to need it from Mark Bowman.
- 48:52[SPEAKER_02]: You're going to need it from Tucker Ashcraft when he's healthy, there was a constant transfer.
- 48:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Carson, Carson Tupper, I'd she, it's great it out very well as well for the record.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_02]: So Carson Tupper, I'd she number 24 doesn't have a tight-in number.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_00]: He really doesn't and he doesn't have like a tight-in build to make up for it.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_02]: No, but the dude's got some some some work to him.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_02]: He can he can do his job there.
- 49:22[SPEAKER_02]: going back to areas of concern, not just about that fourth quarter.
- 49:26[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of you know, I struggled with past blocking, it's past blocking was 35.4.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think you expect more from an upper classman.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_02]: It is week zero.
- 49:36[SPEAKER_02]: We'll see how that goes, but it's like concern there.
- 49:40[SPEAKER_00]: I-
- 49:44[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just say I'm a skeptic of Alonino as a starter.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_00]: Sure, okay.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_00]: I have not seen him progress the way that I- I've always been a raccola jig guy.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm a K-Lon Miller guy, so- For that.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_00]: I would rather have him in there than Noah at this point.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_00]: He was by far, USC Shakyest offensive lineman.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_00]: he is by far the offensive lineman that I am most concerned about in general.
- 50:19[SPEAKER_00]: There's not a death sentence in this game.
- 50:21[SPEAKER_00]: I think you obviously want to keep giving him a chance and seeing what he can do, but yeah, I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I
- 50:32[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not sold is is what I'll say.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_02]: Let's move on to to over under.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_02]: We got over under to go to.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_02]: We still got a mail back.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_02]: So let's let's move on there.
- 50:45[SPEAKER_03]: I think you're going over.
- 50:46[SPEAKER_03]: I think I'm going bold, give me that over.
- 50:48[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going, I gotta take it under here.
- 50:49[SPEAKER_03]: I got three under to take.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_03]: I'm gonna do an under here.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_02]: All right, week zero, over under.
- 50:54[SPEAKER_02]: We've got the graphic up on the YouTube, if you watch this live on YouTube.
- 51:00[SPEAKER_02]: First one, nine and a half catches by true freshmen, wide receivers.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_02]: Both of us took the over.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_02]: At least it wasn't just over, it was way over.
- 51:13[SPEAKER_02]: way way way was the number.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't think that we accounted for Tron Baker starters.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 51:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 51:24[SPEAKER_02]: And it's trying bigger than the biggest revelation of the game.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_00]: I was not expecting, like, I had the necessary answers.
- 51:32[SPEAKER_02]: Version of King Miller.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_02]: In the sense of, like, he's an ambiency on the roster, but not someone that you expected to, and maybe this is on me for being ignorant.
- 51:42[SPEAKER_02]: Sure, could be.
- 51:44[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just, I'm just a big ode me.
- 51:45[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't expect him to have the impact that he did.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_00]: I was I mean, I was I was open to all of the freshman receivers sort of being able to that I can't like a half of them were going to pop early.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_00]: I just I don't remember seeing a lot about Tron Baker and like the the the the the the the the the the.
- 52:04[SPEAKER_00]: camp or anything like that, so him coming straight through and playing well.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't get the single digit like the other guy's got.
- 52:14[SPEAKER_00]: He's out there worried 85.
- 52:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, exactly.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, big, big game for him.
- 52:21[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, let's go to yeah, mostly had seven for for a bucket team, uh, Trombaker 4 for 45 nearly had touched down, uh, King Nixon Wyatt 4 for 36, but we feature one for eight total of 16 true freshman while I'd receive her, uh, catches.
- 52:37[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, let's go to the next one, which was over under seven and a half carries by USC's number one run total.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_02]: I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I
- 53:13[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think anyone would expect 15 I am truly shocked if it was over 10.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_00]: I am truly shocked that not only did the leading rusher have 15 carries, but the second leading rusher waymo also had more than 7.5 carries at eight carries.
- 53:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_00]: On the like first start of the game ahead for each.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_00]: So I think part of it was USC knew that San Jose State's defense line was not just not big enough.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think they came into the game saying we're just going to pound the rock right down their throat and it very worked.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_00]: Certainly on that opening drive until they started stacking the box and forcing USC to have to do some other things.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_00]: can I just can I just be honest you don't like it I don't I I running backs have a finite number of carries in them no I'm I'm with I'm with King Miller was very his number of carries that he managed last year was a lot compared to running backs that USC has had who were more injury prone in the lake mm-hmm
- 54:30[SPEAKER_02]: But I still wouldn't I don't I don't want to like waste 15 carries of him in this season on to say state I'm just I'm just going to be honest one of the things I think that was the talking point that I don't think that a lot of people made us included about the secondary and the defense having so many true freshmen there at the end of the game S.E.s on a short week they play Fresno State Friday night okay your tickets Friday night
- 54:59[SPEAKER_02]: not Saturday, SC will play two games before 95% of the team in the country play one, right?
- 55:07[SPEAKER_02]: It makes sense to me to pull Luke Wavel when you're up 35 to 3.
- 55:17[SPEAKER_02]: It would make more sense to me also to just not have a lot of the runnymects in there.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_02]: I do acknowledge it like part of the reason that they had all the runnymects had five carries last year against Missouri State was because
- 55:29[SPEAKER_02]: They had a bunch of home runs in that game.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of friends, King Miller had the big long 70-yard tucked in or whatever the hell it was.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_02]: There wasn't a big run in this game.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_02]: There wasn't a lot of big plays in this game.
- 55:41[SPEAKER_00]: U.S. is longest run was 11 yards.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I see was methodical in this, which is, I think it's very encouraging to see was methodical and not relying on big plays to just have a guy who makes one dude miss and then it's just faster and runs away.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_02]: like encouraging that they were so methodical and successful and efficient on their drives that way.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_02]: But more plays, more carries, more wear and tear on the body, all that kind of stuff.
- 56:10[SPEAKER_02]: Especially when Wemo was hurt for half the year last year, I knew, yet eight carries, I think that's fine.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_02]: Fifteen for King Miller.
- 56:20[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, there's just a little much.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_02]: By all the things to complain about,
- 56:26[SPEAKER_02]: not the worst thing of the complaint.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_00]: I would have given uh... redou and allston at like half of his carries and maybe toss one or two to two to a uh... to a walk on or something like that I don't know uh... i will i mean that the the factor to also remember for all of this is
- 56:48[SPEAKER_00]: Rodo and Austin are both true freshmen, no blocking, no rocky is a thing.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_00]: I don't necessarily think they were spectacular when they when they were called on the block.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe that was a factor in whether or not they were thrown king back out there.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_02]: 0.5.
- 57:17[SPEAKER_02]: Sacks by Luke Wafel.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_02]: I took the over.
- 57:20[SPEAKER_02]: You took the over.
- 57:21[SPEAKER_02]: At least it was under zero.
- 57:23[SPEAKER_02]: U.S.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_02]: He had zero sacks in this game.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_02]: Zero.
- 57:27[SPEAKER_02]: Nada.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_02]: Nope.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_02]: There was one sack.
- 57:30[SPEAKER_00]: Was Jayden Walker was.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_00]: He was he was giving credit for a sack.
- 57:35[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, fair enough.
- 57:36[SPEAKER_00]: Either way, it wasn't liquid.
- 57:38[SPEAKER_00]: It was not liquid, which means that true freshman, true, true freshman players on defense still for a while yet have not had a second in the opener.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_00]: But I will say, liquid, will easily had the most impressive true freshman debut that I have seen for a USC defensive lineman or front seven player in general that I can never remember.
- 58:05[SPEAKER_00]: He dude does not do doesn't just not look like a freshman.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_00]: He already sorry, Jaden Rama's trip up is great.
- 58:12[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to get the Jaden's mixed up every time.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_00]: They're both so different.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to, they play different positions and they are very different looking human beings.
- 58:22[SPEAKER_00]: I shouldn't get them mixed up, but I will every time I guarantee you.
- 58:35[SPEAKER_00]: looks like a handful and a half, his bull rush is good, his finesse moves are good, he's a quick viral and ticked up.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's, and, and, and I think again, with the Mark Bowman thing, it's not just that he is quick into the backfield,
- 58:56[SPEAKER_00]: because pass rushing is what you know what most of these guys can get initially he was good against the run to yeah he he and gd they were out johnny both johnny's on the spot uh... like it's the run i thought uh... it was really really good against the run uh... with those this those tackles for last but also he was saying his ground there with fence humor and
- 59:21[SPEAKER_00]: Is this the opponent that will convince me that he can play that D.T.
- 59:26[SPEAKER_00]: role against big ten level of the lines?
- 59:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, but that huge ups to G.D. because he looked wonderful.
- 59:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 59:36[SPEAKER_02]: All right, let's go to the next one, which was over under two and a half drives for Jonas Williams.
- 59:46[SPEAKER_02]: uh... this was over uh... in part because either in intercepted uh... which probably added an extra drive there at the very very into the game but uh... some long street play the entire second half against the Missouri state last year and so that's the reason i took the over you took the under on this uh... sand here did not play which i think factors into this as well but uh... yet we saw a lot of genitalians i thought this was a
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_02]: Good, outing for him.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_02]: I know he has the really bad interception, but like, you need to make that mistake and put it on film to learn from it.
- 1:00:22[SPEAKER_02]: And I know you can make that mistake in practice and learn from it there too, but like,
- 1:00:27[SPEAKER_02]: This was the opportunity to make that mistake and learn from it.
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_02]: And like we said in the car cast of all the mistakes to make as as a quarterback.
- 1:00:37[SPEAKER_02]: Not throwing away is like the most fixable mistake.
- 1:00:43[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't make a bad read.
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_02]: short arm a ball he didn't not have the arm strength no he just didn't throw the ball away and try to make a play when you shouldn't try to make a play there.
- 1:00:59[SPEAKER_00]: And it sets up San Jose State on a short field, which they, when the defense was, was gas for all students at the end, yeah, which creates an opportunity for USC to get the ball back with a minute to go and hand the ball off and run out the clock, which is why this one is so painful because I thought I had hit the under.
- 1:01:19[SPEAKER_00]: Up until I went into the game book and looked at the drives to double check and saw that last USC drive that I simply was not aware happened.
- 1:01:30[SPEAKER_02]: It's there.
- 1:01:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's there.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_00]: I can't even confirm that he was the quarterback.
- 1:01:37[SPEAKER_00]: Who?
- 1:01:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:01:39[SPEAKER_00]: I was hoping it was some sort of... Carson Taberati Benz.
- 1:01:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, sure.
- 1:01:43[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 1:01:44[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, Carson Taberati's number is 24.
- 1:01:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's not six.
- 1:01:48[SPEAKER_02]: So he can't really be back there.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_02]: All right, let's go to the second to last moment, which was over under 15 and a half freshman participants in this game.
- 1:02:01[SPEAKER_02]: I took the over, you took the under, it was over at 20, 22 freshman play.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_02]: Let's see if I can read this list.
- 1:02:10[SPEAKER_02]: Feaster Hill, Rodo, Allston.
- 1:02:13[SPEAKER_02]: Ely Riddon Crowder, Ketoonga, Johnson, Deak Enough, Dupui, Smith Collegiate, Weaver, Mosley, Dixon Wyatt, Bowman, Baker, Wafel, and Jonas Williams, the last one.
- 1:02:31[SPEAKER_02]: 20.
- 1:02:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was in.
- 1:02:38[SPEAKER_00]: a very strange order and I don't apologize for it because that was the participation chart.
- 1:02:46[SPEAKER_00]: in the gamebook, plus the Starter's Tactone at the end.
- 1:02:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's a lot of freshman, I'm just going to say, that's a lot of true freshman.
- 1:02:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's a big true freshman class, a lot of true freshman did I expect 20 of the 35 to play.
- 1:03:05[SPEAKER_00]: I probably should have, that's what that meant.
- 1:03:09[SPEAKER_02]: I, a lot of freshmen there, and I think that what makes that list so fascinating is there, there's a lot of freshmen that you've expected to have impacts on this team, trip mostly.
- 1:03:19[SPEAKER_02]: Luke Wafel, Bart Bowman, but there's also guys that you didn't, and I think the Jack's a position of both of those things are good.
- 1:03:29[SPEAKER_02]: You want the guys who didn't have experience, but you expect them to be valuable contributors to the team to get thrown in there and see what they can do and earn some XP right away.
- 1:03:43[SPEAKER_02]: And then you also want the guys who are probably going to register or not be called upon because they have to develop.
- 1:03:52[SPEAKER_02]: You want them to get experienced to even if they have a little bit of a big on their face.
- 1:03:58[SPEAKER_02]: Everyone needs to see the field to get better.
- 1:04:02[SPEAKER_02]: So that's a big thing for our state.
- 1:04:04[SPEAKER_02]: Let's go to the last one.
- 1:04:05[SPEAKER_02]: Over under set and a half, USC tackles for loss.
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_02]: You took the over, I took the over.
- 1:04:13[SPEAKER_02]: It was under, it was five.
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_02]: We talked about this in the preview episode.
- 1:04:22[SPEAKER_02]: Last year, SC had 13 against Missouri State.
- 1:04:25[SPEAKER_02]: That is why I took the over.
- 1:04:27[SPEAKER_02]: But I gave you the reason for why you shouldn't, you don't have to take the over.
- 1:04:34[SPEAKER_02]: The Thursday State had loud, the fewest tackles for loss in the country last year.
- 1:04:40[SPEAKER_02]: The fewest, only Navy had allowed fewer per game because they played a bold game and therefore the average skewed their way just a little bit better.
- 1:04:50[SPEAKER_02]: Texas last year, in week two, Texas played Saturday State and had four tackles for loss.
- 1:04:58[SPEAKER_02]: SC had five in week zero this year, Stanford last year also had around the three.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_02]: So,
- 1:05:05[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that this is like an excuse for SC not generating more negative plays.
- 1:05:11[SPEAKER_02]: More so as, I think this is more evidence that like San Jose State's offense is just focused on a quick passing game and they are past heavy and I think that's going to reduce the number of tackles for loss that you can have because less chances for runstuffs.
- 1:05:29[SPEAKER_02]: But also, they're so quick in the passing game.
- 1:05:32[SPEAKER_02]: There's not a lot of opportunities to get to the quarterback.
- 1:05:36[SPEAKER_02]: As he's still got to find a way to do it.
- 1:05:39[SPEAKER_02]: But what they did in the generate negative plays department is pretty much what every other power conference team is done against in the last couple years.
- 1:05:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, basically, USC needed like a couple sacks here to get closer to this number and they didn't quite get home on those sacks.
- 1:05:58[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.
- 1:05:59[SPEAKER_02]: And so important in the chat in the chat that the the sack that was registered for SC was was the potential grounding sack bite by by rule.
- 1:06:11[SPEAKER_02]: So.
- 1:06:11[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay.
- 1:06:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, one of those.
- 1:06:14[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 1:06:15[SPEAKER_02]: Over under for the week,
- 1:06:20[SPEAKER_02]: to the lone person who went six and out, Trevor V.
- 1:06:24[SPEAKER_02]: Fairfee, wrap up Trevor V. Shoutout to him, great performance.
- 1:06:29[SPEAKER_02]: Sixth and now we'll see if Trevor can continue it in week two.
- 1:06:34[SPEAKER_02]: Sorry, week one, game two, when SC continues on this Friday to play friends in the state.
- 1:06:38[SPEAKER_02]: We'll preview that game Wednesday night, of course.
- 1:06:41[SPEAKER_02]: We'll throw out the Google forum.
- 1:06:44[SPEAKER_02]: Be sure to make your picks and join us in play along with over
- 1:06:52[SPEAKER_02]: to open up the mail bag.
- 1:06:53[SPEAKER_02]: You've got mail.
- 1:06:53[SPEAKER_02]: Run button.
- 1:06:54[SPEAKER_02]: Eh?
- 1:06:54[SPEAKER_02]: Run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run, run,
- 1:07:06[SPEAKER_02]: Mailbag.
- 1:07:08[SPEAKER_02]: Let's start with the Super Chat we got.
- 1:07:12[SPEAKER_02]: We got a super chat from Steve.
- 1:07:15[SPEAKER_02]: Steve and I caught your work in the night.
- 1:07:18[SPEAKER_02]: We'll catch the episode tomorrow.
- 1:07:19[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks.
- 1:07:20[SPEAKER_02]: Big ups to Steve and because he gives us super chats all the time when we're not live.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I feel like we don't have enough of an opportunity to give him all the praise for all of his patronage.
- 1:07:35[SPEAKER_02]: All of his is his coolness was super tats.
- 1:07:40[SPEAKER_02]: We appreciate a statement.
- 1:07:41[SPEAKER_02]: We appreciate you appreciated us.
- 1:07:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, very, very appreciated.
- 1:07:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's good to have you on.
- 1:07:47[SPEAKER_00]: Even if you can't totally watch.
- 1:07:49[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah.
- 1:07:50[SPEAKER_02]: Well, let's go to a voicemail.
- 1:07:53[SPEAKER_02]: We got in the the red and red line from our good friend Michael in the five, six, three.
- 1:08:01[SPEAKER_05]: Hey guys, this is Michael in the five, six, three game just ended and I have to admit is you know, I have to go from the audio broadcast for descriptions and accounts of the game and I'm just going to buy the defense of effort.
- 1:08:15[SPEAKER_05]: If that's how we're going to play this year, which is the same old
- 1:08:20[SPEAKER_05]: were in for a long year, especially when we get up against the Ohio State in Indiana.
- 1:08:25[SPEAKER_05]: They're going to eat us alive.
- 1:08:27[SPEAKER_05]: So anyways, I wanted to know what your thoughts were on it.
- 1:08:31[SPEAKER_05]: That's it.
- 1:08:32[SPEAKER_05]: Take care.
- 1:08:33[SPEAKER_05]: Bye-bye.
- 1:08:34[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks to the call of Michael is always if you're if you're new here Michael is visually impaired And he has been listening to us for like well over a decade at this point calls in just that every game We thoroughly appreciate Michael is awesome.
- 1:08:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think it's interesting because I like I
- 1:08:56[SPEAKER_02]: I don't want to make this a conversation point because it doesn't seem necessarily fair, but as a point out, having to rely on what people are saying and what is being written about the game and the description of the game is fascinating because I do wonder how that sort of altars
- 1:09:18[SPEAKER_02]: in any sort of direction.
- 1:09:19[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 1:09:21[SPEAKER_02]: Perspective on a game like this, where, yeah, the box score certainly doesn't look good, given that SC gave up 26 points.
- 1:09:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think you listened to the first three quarters of this game.
- 1:09:37[SPEAKER_02]: It's 35 to three.
- 1:09:38[SPEAKER_02]: All of that sounds
- 1:09:39[SPEAKER_02]: Great, but then you get into that fourth corner and it's a lot of points to give it up that way.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think it would be interesting to, I don't know how we'd find that out, but I don't know.
- 1:09:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's an interesting thought experiment.
- 1:09:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:09:51[SPEAKER_00]: I think that so much of the impression that people have of this game is just colored by that fourth quarter.
- 1:09:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:10:02[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that the defense of performance was bad through three quarters at all.
- 1:10:07[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think so either.
- 1:10:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think that there were obviously concerns.
- 1:10:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think with the safeties with Christian Pierce getting beat over top and sort of getting fortunate that the throw wasn't wasn't right.
- 1:10:23[SPEAKER_00]: But it didn't really feel
- 1:10:26[SPEAKER_00]: like San Jose State was carving up USC in a particularly meaningful way.
- 1:10:35[SPEAKER_00]: There were a couple runs that I think you got to get cleaned up, but I don't know, I'm not ready to draw conclusions about the defense after this game.
- 1:10:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like, is that enough to say where it's just like, no.
- 1:10:59[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think the defense showed us anything.
- 1:11:02[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think it's grossively.
- 1:11:03[SPEAKER_02]: Cluesions no matter what happened in the game.
- 1:11:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:11:06[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think there was anything conclusive in this game to tell me that this defense will be better or worse than last year's defense.
- 1:11:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I think that's especially the case because you saw both sides of it, right?
- 1:11:17[SPEAKER_02]: Like you saw the success through the first three quarters, you saw the good moments.
- 1:11:22[SPEAKER_02]: You saw, due to adversary literally looking like Leonard Williams and just mulling guys in the right against the run, you saw, look way full, having his impact.
- 1:11:31[SPEAKER_02]: You saw, uh, profit brown, come out of imagery and look like a really impactful player at safety.
- 1:11:38[SPEAKER_02]: But also,
- 1:11:39[SPEAKER_02]: The fourth quarter existed like yeah, I think there's a lot of contacts to take to take account there with all the true freshmen get in there, but it's still existed.
- 1:11:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's still the scheme all that kind of stuff, right?
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, I think that you got it.
- 1:11:52[SPEAKER_02]: You got to wait and see William.
- 1:11:55[SPEAKER_00]: William says the DJ just didn't seem that sharp.
- 1:11:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying they're horrible, but I didn't see a championship unit.
- 1:12:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think maybe, maybe where I'm coming at this is I have no expectations of their being even close to a championship unit.
- 1:12:12[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that the personnel that USC has at this stage is anything close to what Oregon or Ohio State or Indiana fields.
- 1:12:21[SPEAKER_00]: that's just the reality.
- 1:12:22[SPEAKER_00]: U.S. he can't change that overnight.
- 1:12:26[SPEAKER_00]: Well, every Patterson can't change that overnight.
- 1:12:28[SPEAKER_00]: What we can see or hope is a competent defense that is not run off the, run off the feels, you know, half of the time.
- 1:12:39[SPEAKER_00]: And, and, and, and, and doesn't get any better as this season goes on or, or continues to have the same mistakes.
- 1:12:47[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think that
- 1:12:54[SPEAKER_00]: solid competent defense consistently for a season in a long, long, long, long time.
- 1:13:03[SPEAKER_00]: And that's all I'm looking for here.
- 1:13:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if USC is the 25th best defense in the country this year, in the playoff.
- 1:13:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'm fine with that.
- 1:13:14[SPEAKER_00]: That's not championship defense.
- 1:13:16[SPEAKER_00]: But I also don't think USC is anywhere close to competing for a championship.
- 1:13:21[SPEAKER_00]: And that is, you know, I think that we get into, like, where is everybody in terms of
- 1:13:30[SPEAKER_00]: what their expectations for the program this year are are they realistic expectations are they are they the kinds of expectations that way on whether or not the coach should be here next year or not like all those everyone's factoring this in from a different perspective i am trying to put those thoughts to the side and whether or not it's acceptable that u.s. using year five of Lincoln Riley and we're having this discussion
- 1:13:54[SPEAKER_00]: because that's to the side.
- 1:13:56[SPEAKER_00]: The reality of this situation is that USC's defense this year in the first year under Gary Patterson is for me about stabilizing finding your stable solid base of what your defense can be.
- 1:14:09[SPEAKER_00]: And then facilitate young exciting new players into it so that in a future season you can get closer to having a comparable defense to the true
- 1:14:24[SPEAKER_02]: Ohio State Indiana, Oregon Miami, Georgia.
- 1:14:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think the two things that I would raise there, especially to William's point about the defense not only in a championship unit, was there anything they could have done to make you think that they looked like a championship unit, because I would say no.
- 1:14:45[SPEAKER_02]: This team holds Saturday State to 28 yards of total offense and gets 17 tackles for loss and everything.
- 1:14:54[SPEAKER_02]: You can just as easily walk away and say, but it was Saturday State and Saturday State's nothing good.
- 1:14:59[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not saying that the conversation with that would have been thrown into the live chat at some point during the card cast.
- 1:15:09[SPEAKER_02]: You don't know what I mean?
- 1:15:11[SPEAKER_02]: The other thing is
- 1:15:13[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think that S.C. needs a elite-level defense to win a national championship because of how this team is built.
- 1:15:24[SPEAKER_02]: If this team wins a national championship, it's going to be in the vein of LSU 2019, where, I mean, that was arguably the greatest team ever, but, you know, like,
- 1:15:39[SPEAKER_02]: elite elite offense and a good defense that would never end a defense but like that wasn't they were in his best defense right more like the more like what Riley was doing at Oklahoma he never had elite defenses at Oklahoma three offense top 25 defense yeah he was getting to the playoff because the defense wasn't a shit show yes and that's been the problem and you have a top 25 defense and a
- 1:16:04[SPEAKER_02]: Top two three offense, you're going to be in the playoff, right?
- 1:16:09[SPEAKER_02]: You're just, you're just going to because the offense is, is that good?
- 1:16:14[SPEAKER_02]: Does it make it harder to win a national championship?
- 1:16:16[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, compared to the teams that can, you know, put together top five offenses and defense is combined, like in Indiana or in Oregon or in Ohio State.
- 1:16:26[SPEAKER_02]: But like I just think it's a it's a little bit different there.
- 1:16:29[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, let's move on.
- 1:16:31[SPEAKER_02]: We got a call from LA Fred.
- 1:16:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's a long one.
- 1:16:34[SPEAKER_02]: We usually trim these things down and do some a little bit of a montage.
- 1:16:37[SPEAKER_02]: They never enough calls to do a montage.
- 1:16:39[SPEAKER_02]: So we're just letting LA Fred go here.
- 1:16:42[SPEAKER_02]: So it's about two and a half minutes.
- 1:16:44[SPEAKER_02]: So grab a drink.
- 1:16:46[SPEAKER_02]: And listen up.
- 1:16:49[SPEAKER_06]: Hey, Rita Troy is LA Fred calling welcome back to USC football rock box.
- 1:16:56[SPEAKER_06]: Well, since the game ended yesterday, I've taken calls of facts from several of my non-USC friends about how the Trojus was a 38-point favorite and the appendices they call a CM, looked at the fourth quarter of an NFL preseason game.
- 1:17:10[SPEAKER_06]: Damely, it's only week zero and have already second-pired of trying to defend our Trojus and pride.
- 1:17:17[SPEAKER_06]: The big question I learned from one's eyes is what was Jerry Potter's defense skill look like.
- 1:17:22[SPEAKER_06]: And for the first three quarters, I thought it was pretty solid.
- 1:17:26[SPEAKER_06]: The starters in the TV basically shut down down the day state, five of the first six drives went three and out, even with a few starters sitting and playing a very vanilla defense, no stunts or blitzers to speak of, they were pretty solid and hey, Luke Waffle looks like he might just be a dude.
- 1:17:48[SPEAKER_06]: But the fourth quarter did happen, and we got to mention it.
- 1:17:52[SPEAKER_06]: And I know U.S.E.
- 1:17:53[SPEAKER_06]: cleared the deck, and they're playing a bunch of guys who won't be out there in competitive games.
- 1:17:58[SPEAKER_06]: But there's still scholarship athletes on the roster.
- 1:18:02[SPEAKER_06]: There's no reason they should be taken behind the wood shed by channels they state guys who might be walked on to our program.
- 1:18:08[SPEAKER_06]: That's just, it left a sour chase in my mouth.
- 1:18:12[SPEAKER_06]: But I dig breath.
- 1:18:13[SPEAKER_06]: Allow me for an instant to put on, often at the least you've had.
- 1:18:17[SPEAKER_06]: It was after all 35-3 after three quarters.
- 1:18:21[SPEAKER_06]: We have freshmen and sophomores playing all over the field.
- 1:18:24[SPEAKER_06]: The offense was good.
- 1:18:25[SPEAKER_06]: They didn't make many mistakes, hardly any penalties, which is always a benefit in the first few seconds game.
- 1:18:32[SPEAKER_06]: So why didn't you see the room?
- 1:18:34[SPEAKER_06]: He was probably.
- 1:18:34[SPEAKER_06]: Two of our two guys looked fully dynamic, and they ran hard.
- 1:18:39[SPEAKER_02]: He's got a little bit of danger, Charlie.
- 1:18:40[SPEAKER_06]: The running box looked pretty good.
- 1:18:42[SPEAKER_06]: Raymond Jordan looked healthy from his injury.
- 1:18:47[SPEAKER_06]: My album was solid, he wasn't great, but he played within the structure of the play calls that Lincoln was giving him.
- 1:18:53[SPEAKER_06]: And we did get a quick glimpse of freshman Jonas Williams.
- 1:18:57[SPEAKER_06]: And his arm challenge, there I say, look, hot game, I'm impressive.
- 1:19:04[SPEAKER_06]: I was watching the Florida State Game Saturday night after most people went to bed, and they ran a one-scorer game with crappy new Mexico State midway through the fourth quarter.
- 1:19:17[SPEAKER_06]: It can always be worse.
- 1:19:20[SPEAKER_06]: Have a good short week.
- 1:19:21[SPEAKER_06]: Beep the Bulldog.
- 1:19:23[SPEAKER_06]: Fight on everybody.
- 1:19:25[SPEAKER_02]: Excellent, Fred.
- 1:19:27[SPEAKER_02]: The chat's lovin' it, keep choppins as Ellie Fred with the game summary.
- 1:19:31[SPEAKER_02]: Trojade Star, yeah, he's cooking.
- 1:19:33[SPEAKER_02]: He did cook a little bit.
- 1:19:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:19:35[SPEAKER_00]: We could just...
- 1:19:36[SPEAKER_00]: put that out is it's own concoats and it would basically sum up everything in a way for yeah we're ready for it yeah ready for it new name uh... no air ever a start to finish i agree with every point uh... especially the i'm already a noise because that's how i felt on Saturday was like oh here we go uh... the i in the long off season i forget how annoyed i get
- 1:20:00[SPEAKER_00]: about all the discord around this course around USC.
- 1:20:05[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, there's that, but no, I 100% agree.
- 1:20:10[SPEAKER_00]: And I think it's the kind of reasoned sensible analysis that I wish more people would.
- 1:20:22[SPEAKER_00]: What embrace?
- 1:20:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:20:26[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 1:20:28[SPEAKER_02]: Great call hit on all the points.
- 1:20:29[SPEAKER_00]: Especially the Florida State thing because I was having that exact same thought.
- 1:20:35[SPEAKER_00]: I was watching Florida State.
- 1:20:39[SPEAKER_00]: Just New Mexico State was my my Aggies for several seasons in last year's College for Bull game.
- 1:20:47[SPEAKER_00]: I was the New Mexico State Aggies.
- 1:20:50[SPEAKER_00]: They hold a special place in my heart.
- 1:20:52[SPEAKER_00]: So it was very it was very gratifying to see them make that a game.
- 1:20:56[SPEAKER_00]: But when you are Florida State.
- 1:21:00[SPEAKER_00]: A brand that I think is up there with USC among the most recognizable and storied in college football.
- 1:21:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, it could be way, way, way, way, way worse.
- 1:21:16[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 1:21:18[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, Kippe.
- 1:21:19[SPEAKER_02]: Let's hear the chat saying, Trobaba, I see.
- 1:21:22[SPEAKER_02]: There's one difference between this defense in 2002.
- 1:21:24[SPEAKER_02]: Troy Paula Mollow.
- 1:21:26[SPEAKER_02]: I hear you?
- 1:21:29[SPEAKER_02]: But also, 2002 had the beginnings of Wildbunch.
- 1:21:34[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Wildbunch really got underway, 2002 and 2003, both of those seasons.
- 1:21:41[SPEAKER_02]: But like,
- 1:21:43[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that, then again, I will say about the defensive line.
- 1:21:47[SPEAKER_02]: Like, you talk about the, the, that going forward the defense will be fun to watch like if duty adversary comes back.
- 1:22:00[SPEAKER_00]: Abacirid, Jim Stewart, Luke Wafel, get Tom Tom to sort of come through.
- 1:22:08[SPEAKER_02]: It's like the card Wafel in your two.
- 1:22:10[SPEAKER_02]: It's stored in your three.
- 1:22:12[SPEAKER_00]: I always have to remind myself that the book card is a sophomore.
- 1:22:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:22:17[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like he's a junior, but he's actually just a sophomore.
- 1:22:19[SPEAKER_00]: Just the big dude.
- 1:22:20[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's just a lot of stuff on that defensive line to like.
- 1:22:28[SPEAKER_00]: Still, I mean, if Desmond Stevens plays at this level this season, then we're cooking at middle linebacker.
- 1:22:37[SPEAKER_00]: Still, you still don't have a, have that level of linebacker.
- 1:22:42[SPEAKER_00]: Don't have that level of safety, although maybe Alex Graham comes through.
- 1:22:46[SPEAKER_02]: Who's your good?
- 1:22:48[SPEAKER_00]: Who's your
- 1:22:53[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, signed me up.
- 1:22:56[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that I know that I see the, see that.
- 1:22:59[SPEAKER_00]: We're comparison, but signed me up was Mike Pollard.
- 1:23:01[SPEAKER_00]: One of the linebackers in 2002.
- 1:23:06[SPEAKER_00]: Trobob brings up Winfield, Jamie and Winfield.
- 1:23:08[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there's Jamie and Winfields in digital Jamie and Winfield.
- 1:23:14[SPEAKER_02]: Incredible, love the country in Saxon, 2028.
- 1:23:20[SPEAKER_00]: You can see he was injured, so you're in plans.
- 1:23:24[SPEAKER_02]: Randy, how do you feel about Genesis Williams after getting your first upgrade from Long Street question mark?
- 1:23:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's too early to talk about the Long Street stuff.
- 1:23:33[SPEAKER_02]: I also don't think we saw enough of Long Street to truly make a comparison from last year either.
- 1:23:39[SPEAKER_02]: Especially because he just seems like a much different type of quarterback, too.
- 1:23:44[SPEAKER_02]: Longstreet is someone who just was so willing to run the football Then I don't know like longstreet is is in Coach both 27 archetypes.
- 1:23:55[SPEAKER_02]: I know it's probably annoying that we talked with the video game of the time, but he's a pure runner And generous Williams more dual threat
- 1:24:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:24:03[SPEAKER_00]: Is that fair?
- 1:24:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:24:06[SPEAKER_00]: What I will say is that the arm talent that Jonas William showed in this brief caveau was tasty, just tasty.
- 1:24:15[SPEAKER_02]: But he does always have a little loopy but it got there.
- 1:24:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:24:18[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't have the same, like, you know, I think it's on Long Street as a runner.
- 1:24:22[SPEAKER_00]: It was just so, so very dangerous.
- 1:24:26[SPEAKER_00]: And, and that's a different element.
- 1:24:33[SPEAKER_00]: the just the arm talent i'm i'm i'm intrigued i'm here for it i i think also i think the ultimate question between those two is one of them wants to be a trojan one of them didn't so my my my opinion is sort of set and stone already on that front true but uh... thankfully was a long street not wearing number far
- 1:24:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, or four plus is at least you social media would say.
- 1:25:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 1:25:04[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 1:25:04[SPEAKER_02]: Last question from the chat to answer.
- 1:25:08[SPEAKER_02]: What's the room temperature like tonight?
- 1:25:09[SPEAKER_02]: This also from Trobab.
- 1:25:11[SPEAKER_02]: 71.1.
- 1:25:13[SPEAKER_02]: We've been running that, uh, that aircon as the Brits would say it.
- 1:25:17[SPEAKER_00]: We are running the aircon and also it has just been so much cooler today in general.
- 1:25:26[SPEAKER_00]: Like I think the high was like 82, it never really got super humid.
- 1:25:31[SPEAKER_00]: It started cooling off immediately, like the different, like this is the weather I signed up for when we moved, when we moved to the South Bay.
- 1:25:41[SPEAKER_00]: the valley.
- 1:25:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's a different animal up there, but like the trade off of being down here is that oh, the weather will be very temperate.
- 1:25:49[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, so I was very mad when we were at like 90s.
- 1:25:53[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 1:25:54[SPEAKER_00]: And humid.
- 1:25:55[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 1:25:56[SPEAKER_00]: So we're back to much more.
- 1:25:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's just funny because when we first moved here, and I saw 80, I was like, oh, God, it's so hot here, because it is just more humid here than in the valley.
- 1:26:08[SPEAKER_00]: And now it's like 82 and I'm like, oh God, it's so cool.
- 1:26:15[SPEAKER_02]: One of the things I've loved about growing up in South Bay is you would look at like, I love how like Wikipedia has the the climate chart where you can see all the temperatures and everything for every month.
- 1:26:29[SPEAKER_02]: And I love that you'd look at various cities in the South Bay and you will see.
- 1:26:35[SPEAKER_02]: the range of like 64 to 74 and it's like, yes, that's ideal.
- 1:26:42[SPEAKER_02]: That's what it should be.
- 1:26:44[SPEAKER_02]: And that's what I've always sold you on.
- 1:26:47[SPEAKER_02]: And then it's been like an average of 88.
- 1:26:54[SPEAKER_02]: In a place where houses don't have central air because it's normally a high up.
- 1:27:06[SPEAKER_02]: All right, um, front is a Winston justice in the chat.
- 1:27:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and the the the the BB gun, you know, what a time to be alive.
- 1:27:18[SPEAKER_02]: Winston just all-time great name.
- 1:27:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 1:27:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:27:22[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, well, uh, Rome already says hope the dogs are doing well.
- 1:27:26[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, can we can we can we get?
- 1:27:27[SPEAKER_02]: Can we discuss?
- 1:27:28[SPEAKER_02]: Can we?
- 1:27:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we hold on.
- 1:27:30[SPEAKER_02]: Can we get
- 1:27:32[SPEAKER_02]: Come on, can we get Badger on camera?
- 1:27:33[SPEAKER_00]: Hey Badger, come here.
- 1:27:33[SPEAKER_00]: Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on,
- 1:27:51[SPEAKER_00]: You?
- 1:27:51[SPEAKER_00]: Badger?
- 1:27:52[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, he's like in the camera.
- 1:27:55[SPEAKER_00]: Badger?
- 1:27:55[SPEAKER_00]: Badger?
- 1:27:56[SPEAKER_00]: All right, okay.
- 1:27:57[SPEAKER_00]: Say hi.
- 1:27:58[SPEAKER_00]: You're seeing the behind the scenes of... Uh-uh.
- 1:28:02[SPEAKER_00]: You didn't want to...
- 1:28:03[SPEAKER_00]: He was, because Jesse got out.
- 1:28:05[SPEAKER_02]: What did you do?
- 1:28:06[SPEAKER_00]: You knocked... Did I mess up a thing?
- 1:28:09[SPEAKER_00]: You messed up a thing.
- 1:28:10[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry.
- 1:28:10[SPEAKER_00]: He...
- 1:28:11[SPEAKER_02]: He... Not really Badger's tail.
- 1:28:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's always Badger's Hill.
- 1:28:15[SPEAKER_00]: So my camera has been shaking in and out throughout the episode, because Badger has a little sleep mat right at my feet under the desk and a little dog bed.
- 1:28:28[SPEAKER_00]: Cool dog bed.
- 1:28:30[SPEAKER_00]: And the camera is mounted to the desk.
- 1:28:33[SPEAKER_00]: So every time he would turn or toss or do
- 1:28:41[SPEAKER_02]: And so he was just doing lots of, like, spreading out and laying down and moving this and that and, yeah, I, during Fred's call, I, well, I've got better over here.
- 1:28:59[SPEAKER_04]: Um, hello Mr.
- 1:29:00[SPEAKER_04]: Boy.
- 1:29:03[SPEAKER_04]: You can see it's now a little bit.
- 1:29:05[SPEAKER_02]: I'm during Fred's call.
- 1:29:08[SPEAKER_02]: I muted both of us, so I could tell you to pet Badger's tummy, because your foot was right there and he was like showing you his tummy.
- 1:29:19[SPEAKER_00]: And you just like, I didn't, you heard, you say something.
- 1:29:21[SPEAKER_00]: I thought you were talking to Jesse.
- 1:29:23[SPEAKER_02]: No, I'm like, but it's tummy right there.
- 1:29:27[SPEAKER_02]: It's belly.
- 1:29:29[SPEAKER_05]: Do a badge.
- 1:29:29[SPEAKER_02]: All right, we'll be back Wednesday night 9 p.m. Hopefully 9 p.m. Sharp.
- 1:29:39[SPEAKER_02]: Today we were 9 30 live on YouTube.
- 1:29:42[SPEAKER_02]: We mentioned before.
- 1:29:43[SPEAKER_02]: These are laid episodes because we've got like renovations going on at Casa Del Rott.
- 1:29:51[SPEAKER_02]: And so I love one of the
- 1:29:58[SPEAKER_02]: that we've got at the house coming every day.
- 1:30:01[SPEAKER_02]: Because they work on the Michael schedule.
- 1:30:05[SPEAKER_02]: It gets you about noon, leaves at like eight, 30.
- 1:30:10[SPEAKER_02]: That's what I would do.
- 1:30:12[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's the only way to, so, I mean, it's not like they've been beating the heat because at eight, 30, it's still freaking 90 degrees, but today it's been much better.
- 1:30:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:30:22[SPEAKER_02]: And so if we started the normal time, I mean, here.
- 1:30:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:30:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:30:33[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 1:30:33[SPEAKER_02]: We'll be back Wednesday.
- 1:30:36[SPEAKER_02]: Give us your calls.
- 1:30:38[SPEAKER_02]: 8-8-6-4-3-7-2-7-2-7 is the phone number, email address, rate of joy, if things are to come.
- 1:30:44[SPEAKER_02]: Well, most of the forgot, you were coming on, ladies, 2am here.
- 1:30:47[SPEAKER_02]: And have been watching, catching up on Retro, I need to rewatch what was said.
- 1:30:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, rewatch what we've said, sorry, we're late.
- 1:30:55[SPEAKER_02]: We were late in the night.
- 1:30:58[SPEAKER_02]: But we're here.
- 1:31:00[SPEAKER_02]: All right, we'll be back once they until then.
- 1:31:05[SPEAKER_02]: We will see you.
