Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hello from a very stateside, Emily, you were listening to
- 0:23Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from a Hurdle.
- 0:26Speaker 2: It feels great to be home.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I had the most unbelievable time traveling from Singapore to
- 0:32Speaker 1: Tokyo to Kyoto, which someone pointed out to me, is
- 0:36Speaker 1: Tokyo spelled differently. Just throwing that out there for anyone
- 0:39Speaker 1: who's never thought of that before. Anyway, I had an
- 0:42Speaker 1: amazing time. But it feels so good to be back.
- 0:45Speaker 1: And it's comical because I am back for a good time,
- 0:50Speaker 1: not a long time, and that I've got some more
- 0:54Speaker 1: travel on deck. Starting this coming Wednesday, I am heading
- 0:57Speaker 1: out to Los Angeles. Quick little event announcement. If you
- 1:00Speaker 1: are in the LA area listening to this, I want
- 1:03Speaker 1: to hang out with you and I want you to
- 1:05Speaker 1: come to an awesome event I'm hosting alongside ASEX on
- 1:09Speaker 1: Thursday evening, that is March fourteenth.
- 1:12Speaker 2: It's at the Huntly in Santa Monica.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I'm going to be sitting down with a few ASEIS
- 1:17Speaker 1: ambassadors and some experts that are behind a study that
- 1:21Speaker 1: ASEX conducted. They're calling it Move Her Mind, and essentially
- 1:25Speaker 1: it showed a lot of tie is not so surprisingly
- 1:28Speaker 1: between movement and the benefits on mental health. So we'll
- 1:33Speaker 1: be addressing woman in sport, how we can all become
- 1:37Speaker 1: more active, and having just a really down to earth
- 1:40Speaker 1: and lovely discussion about the importance of moving our bodies.
- 1:45Speaker 1: The link to register for this event is in the
- 1:47Speaker 1: show notes. It is at six thirty pm again, that
- 1:51Speaker 1: is next Thursday, March fourteenth. On that note, one other
- 1:55Speaker 1: small item of housekeeping, I'm doing a talk live in
- 1:58Speaker 1: New York this evening at RAFA in Soho. I'd love
- 2:02Speaker 1: to see there. Details on this are in the show notes.
- 2:05Speaker 1: We're going to be having a little chat in honor
- 2:08Speaker 1: of today's holiday, which is International Woman's Day. So come
- 2:13Speaker 1: hang uh, would love, would love, would love love to
- 2:16Speaker 1: see you for today's episode of Five Minute Friday.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I want to talk about recovery.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I am five days post marathon right now, and my
- 2:27Speaker 1: main and only priority at the moment is doing what
- 2:31Speaker 1: feels good for me and my body.
- 2:34Speaker 2: It can be.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Really frustrating when you accomplish a big goal. You have
- 2:38Speaker 1: that huge celebratory moment and then there's like this massive
- 2:41Speaker 1: come down, right, and for me, there is so much
- 2:45Speaker 1: strategy in figuring out what's right for me, my body,
- 2:49Speaker 1: and my recovery strategy after a big event. Recovery is
- 2:54Speaker 1: bigger than just giving my body a break. It's spending
- 2:58Speaker 1: time with people that fill me up. It's doing things
- 3:02Speaker 1: that make me happy. It's reflecting on my experience and
- 3:05Speaker 1: processing my emotions and reflecting on what I want to
- 3:09Speaker 1: do next. And that is a really important point that
- 3:13Speaker 1: I want to make. It can feel really empty after
- 3:18Speaker 1: you're done, after you get to that mountaintop, right, not
- 3:21Speaker 1: just within setting goals that have to do with physical performance,
- 3:25Speaker 1: but heck, having a wedding or planning for any sort
- 3:28Speaker 1: of a big event. We do all this work gearing
- 3:31Speaker 1: up to this one thing, and when that one thing
- 3:33Speaker 1: is done, that inevitable empty feeling kind of creeps in.
- 3:39Speaker 1: And so today I encourage you, regardless of what your
- 3:43Speaker 1: mountaintop might be, ask yourself, what's next. We owe it
- 3:48Speaker 1: to ourselves to use our time to the best of
- 3:50Speaker 1: our ability, and right now I'm in the process of
- 3:53Speaker 1: figuring that out. Rather than feeling a lull or getting
- 3:58Speaker 1: what often many call the marathon blues, I look at
- 4:01Speaker 1: this recovery period as an opportunity, an opportunity to ask
- 4:05Speaker 1: myself what is it that Emily wants? And what is
- 4:08Speaker 1: best for Emily? There's so much power in the reframe,
- 4:13Speaker 1: and so I ask you this week what is best
- 4:18Speaker 1: for you? What is something that is on your radar
- 4:21Speaker 1: that excites you? And if you can't think of something
- 4:24Speaker 1: at the moment, now is as good of a time
- 4:27Speaker 1: as any to put something on the horizon.
- 4:31Speaker 2: And now a listener question.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Hi, Emily, My question is if you had to choose
- 4:38Speaker 3: one common nutrition myth to just eradicate somehow, which myth
- 4:45Speaker 3: would you choose? And why? Thanks?
- 4:48Speaker 1: Bye oh man so many but right now, top of
- 4:51Speaker 1: mind for me is the idea that carbs are bad,
- 4:54Speaker 1: especially after what I went through earlier this year, going
- 4:57Speaker 1: on whole thirty walled marathon on training and realizing just
- 5:01Speaker 1: how depleted I felt as the days went on, large
- 5:05Speaker 1: in part because I didn't have the carbs that I needed.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a mess.
- 5:11Speaker 1: We need carbohydrates, period, and it's sad right because carbs
- 5:16Speaker 1: get such a bad wrap.
- 5:18Speaker 2: According to the nutrition.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Guidelines, I believe that most people should be getting about
- 5:23Speaker 1: forty five to sixty five percent of their total daily
- 5:27Speaker 1: calories from carbohydrates. Now, that doesn't mean that I am
- 5:33Speaker 1: recommending you eat a diet high in things like pasta
- 5:38Speaker 1: and bread and candies and treats.
- 5:40Speaker 2: But there is nothing wrong with occasionally integrating these things
- 5:44Speaker 2: into the mixed period. I am someone that believes that
- 5:47Speaker 2: you can do everything in moderation and when possible, lean
- 5:52Speaker 2: into complex carbs. I'm talking beans, lagoons, fruits, veggies, whole grains.
- 5:57Speaker 2: They're higher and fiber and starch, which means you'll feel
- 6:00Speaker 2: fuller for longer. And I'm totally on team reach for
- 6:04Speaker 2: fruit like an apple or a pear or some grapes
- 6:07Speaker 2: to satisfy my sweet tooth lately. So yes, carbs are
- 6:12Speaker 2: your friend, period. Make sure you're following along over on
- 6:18Speaker 2: social It's at Hurdle podcast. I am over at Emily
