- 0:00Hanan: Welcome back everyone.
- 0:01Hanan: I'm Henan.
- 0:02Hanan: I'm Lina.
- 0:02Hanan: And this is another episode of Obnoxiously Pleasant.
- 0:06Hanan: Lina loves that part.
- 0:07Lina: Yeah.
- 0:08Hanan: We went out today, Lina and I.
- 0:09Hanan: We went outside.
- 0:10Hanan: Like we left the house.
- 0:12Lina: Because I care about the person.
- 0:14Lina: Okay?
- 0:14Lina: I told you.
- 0:15Lina: When I like the person, I'll make an effort.
- 0:18Hanan: And today the humidity is so bad.
- 0:19Hanan: This is the best I could do with it.
- 0:21Lina: I don't know if you guys can see the frizz on my.
- 0:22Lina: No, you really can't.
- 0:23Hanan: But honestly, this is about as good as it's gonna get today.
- 0:25Hanan: Yes.
- 0:26Hanan: It's uh the weather is very humid today.
- 0:28Hanan: Yeah, Hana didn't want to do this episode today, guys.
- 0:30Hanan: No, man, I'm really tired.
- 0:31Hanan: She's really tired.
- 0:32Hanan: I I didn't, it's not that I wouldn't want to do the episode.
- 0:34Hanan: I just didn't want to do anything today.
- 0:35Lina: Yeah.
- 0:36Hanan: At all.
- 0:36Lina: How many espresso have you had or shots?
- 0:39Hanan: Six.
- 0:39Hanan: Six.
- 0:39Hanan: I'm tired still.
- 0:40Lina: Okay.
- 0:40Lina: Yeah, we're gonna do this.
- 0:41Lina: Knock it out.
- 0:42Lina: Can you not like be so like down?
- 0:44Lina: Like I'm not down, I'm tired.
- 0:46Lina: Okay, like like, you know, have some energy, please.
- 0:49Lina: Okay, this is just not acceptable.
- 0:51Hanan: Anyways.
- 0:52Lina: All right.
- 0:52Lina: Anyway, um, so obviously you've seen, you've heard about Ed Sharon.
- 0:57Hanan: Oh, yeah.
- 0:58Lina: And Mac Lamore.
- 0:59Lina: Yeah.
- 0:59Hanan: Okay.
- 1:00Hanan: So yesterday.
- 1:01Hanan: The funniest being myself about that was a guy who was like, I'm sorry that in 2014 I told you to Macalusky.
- 1:07Hanan: Macaluski, yeah.
- 1:09Hanan: Which I thought was amazing.
- 1:10Lina: I know.
- 1:11Lina: So yesterday he had his first concert.
- 1:13Lina: Ed Sharon had his first concert all of this.
- 1:15Lina: And he gave a speech.
- 1:17Lina: Yes.
- 1:17Lina: Not a speech, but like he he spoke.
- 1:19Lina: So the my thoughts on that is that was Chat GPT.
- 1:25Hanan: It's not even about who wrote it.
- 1:26Hanan: Yeah, it was just it was as much as horrible.
- 1:28Hanan: Horrible as much as like, so here's what like so again, a big part of me is like, I don't know the inner workings.
- 1:36Hanan: What I so say you were in a Chiron shoes, right?
- 1:39Hanan: And you were stuck like between a rock and a hard place.
- 1:42Hanan: Here's what I would do personally, right?
- 1:45Hanan: I would have let the shows get canceled at those venues as a whole.
- 1:50Hanan: Because it wasn't the entire tour, it was specific venues, right?
- 1:54Hanan: So if I was at Cheeron, I would have let the venues cancel those couple of shows, and then I would have let the venue owners explain to the ticket buyers, the people who bought tickets, why it was okay for that venue owner to cancel my show.
- 2:09Hanan: I think he even if you wanted to, like let's just for let's just for shit and giggles say, like, you wanted to remain apolitical, right?
- 2:15Lina: That's BS because he's never been apolitical, but of course, but you know what I mean?
- 2:19Hanan: Like, isn't that the whole line that he's using?
- 2:21Lina: Yeah, but it's BS because obviously he was political about Ukraine, he was political obviously.
- 2:26Hanan: Yeah, in this case, yeah, step outside of what you're thinking.
- 2:29Hanan: If you were smart, if you were smart, you wanted to play your cards right.
- 2:33Hanan: Yeah, but he wasn't smart.
- 2:34Hanan: He was, I mean, like, but here's what I I seriously, here's what I would have done.
- 2:37Hanan: If somebody had come up and said to me, So say I'm I'm at here and I'm on tour, right?
- 2:41Hanan: Okay, and somebody says this to me, I would have been like, whoop, sorry.
- 2:46Hanan: I guess we're canceling whatever the two vendors are.
- 2:49Lina: Yeah, because exactly.
- 2:50Hanan: But like let them get cancelled.
- 2:52Lina: Let go ahead and do it.
- 2:52Lina: Yeah, but you say that, but it's like how much like is it like money?
- 2:56Lina: I don't I don't like it.
- 2:57Lina: How much money do you need?
- 2:59Lina: But like like his statement, okay, and I'm gonna play it.
- 3:03Speaker: I don't want to disappoint fans, and I've never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet.
- 3:15Speaker: I am deeply worried about the idea that venues should pre-approve content of performers.
- 3:20Speaker: This happens in so many places that I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world.
- 3:25Speaker: Now, I want to address the question of where I stand in the situation in Israel and Palestine and whether my doing this concert here tonight implies where I stand.
- 3:39Speaker: I have tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division, about humanity, not politics.
- 3:50Speaker: But this is a humanitarian issue, and I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore.
- 4:00Speaker: What happened in Israel and at the Nova Music Festival on October 7th was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain.
- 4:08Speaker: What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate.
- 4:15Speaker: My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians' lives, of children's lives.
- 4:23Speaker: And the systemic injustice we're seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked.
- 4:29Lina: His statement yesterday, I feel like it made it worse.
- 4:32Lina: Oh, absolutely.
- 4:33Lina: You he like doubled down.
- 4:35Hanan: Like you're still saying both sides and no what I don't understand is when you say my concerts are a safe space for everyone, did McLamore attack anybody at the concert?
- 4:42Lina: And he I mean it's so ridiculous.
- 4:45Lina: It's like you have you're worth $400 million.
- 4:47Lina: How much more money do you do you need?
- 4:50Hanan: And again, again, forget all of that.
- 4:52Hanan: Like, I understand that there's things that are like people are contractually bound to, there's money, blah, blah, blah.
- 4:58Hanan: But the folks on his tour who are less famous than him, okay, I'm not talking about Macklemore.
- 5:04Hanan: I'm talking about his own band, right?
- 5:07Hanan: They were like, bye, we're out.
- 5:09Hanan: Yeah.
- 5:10Hanan: So, like, clearly, whatever contractual obligation is in place, okay, maybe it's not as bad as we think.
- 5:16Hanan: But again, I personally, if I was somebody who like, I didn't know what to do about this, let's just, because McLeore in his statement, and I believe him, said that they've spent like a week or something, whatever time frame, let me not lie.
- 5:26Hanan: They spent some time talking to each other about what this was and what this is going to be.
- 5:31Hanan: And like, you know, I guess McLeore was trying to educate Ed Sharon on why he has the stance that he has.
- 5:38Hanan: Fine.
- 5:38Hanan: I literally would have let those two shows get canceled.
- 5:42unknown: Yeah.
- 5:42Hanan: And then have people get their money refunded by the venue, and then have the people who own the venues be responsible.
- 5:48Hanan: Because, like, when did venues like when did artists?
- 5:51Lina: It's billionaires who own these.
- 5:53Hanan: Honestly, when did artists like forget that they need the venues need them to like sell out?
- 5:58Lina: But here's here's the thing.
- 5:59Lina: The other issue, and it's really serious actually, is the fact that these billionaires feel that they have the right and the power and the ability to control what people say well artists are.
- 6:09Lina: Yeah, but this is honestly like not the first time.
- 6:12Lina: I know this is not the first time, but I think it backfired like enormously.
- 6:16Hanan: But I here's the thing.
- 6:17Hanan: I think, yes, it backfired enormously against them.
- 6:20Hanan: But Sigir Keda, like, it's not the first time, and it's not gonna be the last time.
- 6:23Lina: It's not the first time, but I think now I like like this all started with Pink and her dumb ass.
- 6:27Lina: Okay.
- 6:28Lina: Like, would she she completely like it and and I'm so happy about it because people are not, you know, they're they're they're more they're more well informed now.
- 6:38Lina: It's different.
- 6:40Hanan: I think just people are sick and tired of the same BS.
- 6:42Hanan: You're like, okay, I'm sorry, maybe if you were uninformed like three years ago, yeah, I could have given you a pass.
- 6:47Lina: But yeah, no, not and then every time someone says the word free Palestine, it's like anti-Semitic.
- 6:53Lina: It's not anti-Semitic, okay?
- 6:54Lina: Like, I don't understand, like, like stop likening, like, you know, he went out of his way.
- 6:58Lina: No, no, but he went out of his way, Mac Lamore, to say, hey, to all my Jewish friends, yeah, this is not about you.
- 7:04Lina: Okay, this is the issue.
- 7:05Lina: They want to say that if you're poor Palestinian, you're automatically anti-Semitic.
- 7:09Hanan: That's the issue.
- 7:10Hanan: So, you know what's funny about that?
- 7:11Hanan: I saw this great video by a journalist, Ayman Muhideen, who I absolutely like think is the world of.
- 7:18Hanan: I just saw, I think I know what you're talking about.
- 7:19Hanan: I think he's phenomenal.
- 7:20Hanan: So he posted a video and we can insert it because I love what he said.
- 7:23Hanan: There's one sentence that where he specifically talks about it.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Protesters on college campuses, that's threatening.
- 7:28Speaker 1: You build an encampment, people call the police, you try to boycott Israeli products, that's anti-Semitic.
- 7:34Speaker 1: You ask university, uh, universities or pension funds in cities to divest, that's also anti-Semitic.
- 7:41Speaker 1: You wear a piece of clothing like the kafia, that's intimidating.
- 7:45Speaker 1: You wear a ceasefire pin, that's divisive.
- 7:48Speaker 1: You wave a Palestinian flag, that's provocative.
- 7:50Speaker 1: So my question really is to Bob Craft and all this, and everyone else who says that they support Palestinians, just not like that.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Tell us what is an acceptable method?
- 8:01Speaker 1: Which protest is quiet enough, which boycott is gentle enough, which flag is small enough, which act of solidarity is ineffective enough to earn your approval.
- 8:12Hanan: When you listen, he's right.
- 8:14Hanan: Like everything people have tried everything.
- 8:17Hanan: We've tried everything.
- 8:18Hanan: What is an appropriate way to show your dislike of what's happening or your disdain of what's happening?
- 8:24Hanan: Because ever it seems every single way, peaceful, right?
- 8:28Hanan: Or peaceful protest, ascending, what whatever it is, is not working.
- 8:32Hanan: Nothing.
- 8:33Lina: So what can it's not that it's not working, it's unacceptable to the powers that that that be.
- 8:37Hanan: So like what is acceptable at this point?
- 8:39Lina: What is acceptable?
- 8:40Lina: We should just die.
- 8:41Lina: As Palestinians, as Palestinians, we're just we should just be the perfect victims and just shut the fuck up while we're getting like obliterated.
- 8:48Lina: Okay.
- 8:49Lina: This is this is what they want us to do.
- 8:51Hanan: Yeah, I mean, it's just like I This whole thing has just been so like everywhere in my newsfeed.
- 8:56Hanan: And as much as I like, it's I'm like great, it's getting attention.
- 9:00Hanan: I'm like, I'm kind of past it because I'm like, people are still dying.
- 9:04Lina: Yes, exactly.
- 9:05Hanan: It hasn't stopped every single day.
- 9:07Hanan: Every single day.
- 9:08Hanan: It's like itcha, but uh like me fera itcha.
- 9:11Hanan: Like, uh look, I could I guess let me not say that.
- 9:13Hanan: Fa it.
- 9:14Hanan: Like it does make a huge difference.
- 9:15Hanan: No, it makes a difference, it makes a huge difference.
- 9:16Hanan: I guess I've just reached me personally, I've reached a point where I feel like it's like I have no return.
- 9:22Hanan: Like I'm just like, everything that happens, there's there's no form, there's no acceptable form of saying I don't like what's happening.
- 9:30Lina: No, no, but we're supposed to just be okay with it.
- 9:31Lina: No, no, we're not we're not gonna be okay with it, and we're not gonna accept their BS.
- 9:35Lina: We're gonna keep, you know, fighting the good fight, talking about it, bringing awareness to it.
- 9:40Lina: But I think this is I I think in the in the grand scheme of things, like in in the long run, this was a positive thing so too for for the movement and for uh uh Palestine in general, because like you know, more and more people are aware, more and more people are saying, hey, wait, hold on.
- 9:56Lina: This doesn't make sense.
- 9:57Lina: Like, what are you guys what are you guys doing?
- 9:59Hanan: I do think it's like super helpful that people can realize, like regular people, like if we band together enough, boycott this card, we do not have to accept the way that they're treating us.
- 10:09Hanan: Like just because they're the ones with the money doesn't mean that they get to tell us how to freaking love our life.
- 10:13Lina: I know.
- 10:14Lina: Okay, moving on to the next topic.
- 10:15Lina: All right.
- 10:16Lina: Um, so when I mentioned this to you, you kind of seemed surprised.
- 10:19Lina: I said, uh, shoe company bullshit.
- 10:22Lina: Or or have you have you seen the um Adidas?
- 10:25Lina: Oh, yes.
- 10:27Lina: Okay, so so they decided to feature an Israeli, like an IDF soldier.
- 10:32Lina: Yeah, because they have this program where you can just buy one shoe if you have I think he's like lost the limb or something.
- 10:37Lina: Yes.
- 10:37Lina: Okay.
- 10:38Lina: And so like there was a lot of backlash.
- 10:40Lina: Obviously.
- 10:41Lina: Yeah, and um on the Not to take away from anybody losing their leg.
- 10:45Lina: No, no, of course not.
- 10:46Lina: But like, but like really you pick a you pick a a soldier uh who served in Gazza, you pick an Israeli soldier who served in Gaza, but you don't pick one of the thousands of Palestinian children who have lost a limb.
- 11:00Lina: I have I have the numbers here.
- 11:01Hanan: No, it's over 20,000 kids.
- 11:03Lina: So so according to the uh World Health Organization, 42,000 people in Gaza have life-changing injuries because of genocide in Gaza.
- 11:11Lina: So one in four is a child.
- 11:13Lina: One in four of those people is a child, okay?
- 11:16Lina: So anyway, on Adidas Arabia, like they didn't do an actual press release, but on their Instagram page, they apologized.
- 11:23Hanan: Um Adidas Arabia.
- 11:26Lina: Yeah, so so yeah, so it wasn't like Adidas, it was Adidas Arabia page, okay?
- 11:31Lina: But I'm just like, really?
- 11:33Hanan: Whatever.
- 11:35Lina: Like, I I mean, like, it's just it's it's insane to me.
- 11:38Lina: Like this person is probably a freaking war criminal.
- 11:41Lina: And here you guys are you have him in an ad.
- 11:43Hanan: Yeah, I mean, so here's the thing, right?
- 11:46Hanan: Does again, does this surprise me?
- 11:48Hanan: No, because I feel like no matter what we do, we continue to be surrounded by people.
- 11:53Hanan: I mean, look, even if you know nothing about politics, you should at least know that this is like poor taste.
- 11:59Lina: Right?
- 11:59Lina: It's just poor taste.
- 12:00Lina: It's crazy.
- 12:01Lina: Okay, so the other, the other, um, the other shoe situation.
- 12:04Lina: You've heard about the converse uh controversy.
- 12:08unknown: God.
- 12:09Lina: Well, I swear to God, as soon as I saw that, I'm like, OMG.
- 12:13Lina: Okay, I'm like, what is this ad?
- 12:15Lina: Interesting.
- 12:16Hanan: It's so obviously like fucked up.
- 12:17Hanan: But you know what's really interesting about that ad is so when I came across it, I think it was like yesterday or the day before that I came across it.
- 12:23Hanan: There's a lot of people in the comments that were confused about what this was.
- 12:28Hanan: And I'm wondering if it's like an age thing.
- 12:31Hanan: Like maybe people are age get it right away.
- 12:33Hanan: Younger people don't get it right away.
- 12:34Hanan: People were confused.
- 12:35Hanan: Yeah, like there were so many people, and I think like a lot of people were like, I don't see what you're talking about.
- 12:39Hanan: Like, what is this?
- 12:40Hanan: What what's what's offensive about this?
- 12:41Hanan: What's offensive about this?
- 12:42Hanan: But you can tell by clicking on certain profiles, kind of like the age group that person must be in.
- 12:48Hanan: Okay.
- 12:48Hanan: Based on their if they're I and again, this is all me doing very basic, you know, research on each person, looking at like their likes, for example, on TikTok, or looking at their, you know, like so you think it's an age thing, it's not like a color thing or like no no no, no, not not that at all.
- 13:05Hanan: No, I was I was very surprised that a lot of people were asking questions as to what this is.
- 13:10Hanan: Like they didn't get the the the the issue with it.
- 13:13Hanan: They didn't get the issue with it.
- 13:14Hanan: And I'm like, is it am I this you have to be like But you got it right away, right?
- 13:18Hanan: I got it right away, but then I was thinking to myself, I'm like, there is oh my god, I have so many thoughts about this, you guys.
- 13:24Hanan: Like, one, I was like, why is it why are there so many questions about what the symbolism of this, like what this depicts, right?
- 13:31Hanan: But I was like the education system, and then I was like, oh my god, everybody in these comments, do they just like not understand like what American history is?
- 13:41Hanan: Have they not read?
- 13:42Hanan: Did they read nothing about the civil rights movement or pre-the-civil rights movement or why the civil rights movement happened?
- 13:48Hanan: That's kind of what the thoughts in my mind were as I was going and scrolling and asking questions, like looking at the people in the comments who are asking questions and seeing that it was a significant number of like young, young people.
- 14:00Hanan: When I say young, I mean probably less than 20.
- 14:03Hanan: Yeah.
- 14:04Hanan: And this is again very basic.
- 14:06Lina: I should show it, I should show it to my kids and just see.
- 14:08Lina: And see what they and see what honestly, because I was really curious about that.
- 14:12Lina: Because for me, like I saw it and I'm like, is it what it what I think it is?
- 14:16Hanan: But when you look at the comments, yeah, it's all people our age, and maybe a little bit younger, definitely a lot of people who are older than us who see it right away.
- 14:26Hanan: But the kids, like your kids' age, I'm gonna try to get it.
- 14:29Hanan: Try with your kids.
- 14:30Hanan: A lot of them try with your older.
- 14:31Hanan: I don't know.
- 14:32Hanan: Yeah, I don't know.
- 14:33Hanan: I don't know.
- 14:33Hanan: Well, my younger son's not gonna need to do it.
- 14:35Lina: Yeah, yeah, no, I'm talking about yeah, but but the thing is like this stuff, anyone who works in TV production, photography, listen, I'm telling you, this stuff honestly doesn't happen by mistake.
- 14:46Hanan: No, I don't think so either.
- 14:46Hanan: Okay, I agree with you, by the way.
- 14:48Lina: Like, this is just so like, I mean, just the shoes.
- 14:50Lina: Look at this.
- 14:51Lina: Like the way the shoes are being held, and then like this, dude.
- 14:54Lina: Come on.
- 14:55Lina: It's so clearly like like a KKK, like the Ku Klux Klan hood.
- 15:02Hanan: Honestly, it's really interesting because again, and I'm really I look, I agree with that part that you said about stuff like this doesn't happen like in a oh no, definitely not.
- 15:12Hanan: I'm telling you right now, definitely not again, but then I think to myself, like, what if this person doing this ad was like a very young Gen Zier?
- 15:20Hanan: No, do they see it?
- 15:21Lina: No, no, no, no, Hannah.
- 15:22Lina: No, because I'll tell you what, because it goes through so many different layers of people.
- 15:26Hanan: Again, again, I I'm not saying you're wrong.
- 15:28Lina: I'm just wondering.
- 15:29Lina: No, no, no, no.
- 15:30Hanan: I'm wondering, like, the person who came up with this.
- 15:32Lina: Let's say, let's say the photographer or the person who came up with this ad idea was younger generation, right?
- 15:37Hanan: Or doesn't get it or something.
- 15:38Lina: Or doesn't get it, but there are so many different layers.
- 15:42Hanan: I find it really hard to not see it because it's the first thing that I saw.
- 15:45Hanan: But again, so you were like me.
- 15:47Hanan: But but again, the part that kind of threw me for, you know, threw me for a loop a little bit was all of the people asking in the comments, like, what is this?
- 15:54Hanan: What's the big deal?
- 15:54Hanan: What's the big crazy?
- 15:56Lina: And I was like, What do you mean?
- 15:56Lina: I'm gonna go home right now after we finish and I'm gonna ask, I'm gonna show it to my kids and see what they say.
- 16:01Lina: But I'm just curious.
- 16:02Hanan: Honestly, they might have already seen the commentary, so it's kind of tainted at this point.
- 16:06Lina: Maybe.
- 16:07Lina: Yeah.
- 16:07Lina: I'll see, I'll ask them.
- 16:08Lina: If they do, then I won't even bother.
- 16:10Lina: Yeah.
- 16:10Lina: Okay, so next thing, we're dealing with a lot of controversy.
- 16:13Lina: So today's episode is about controversy.
- 16:14Lina: Controversy.
- 16:15Lina: Yeah.
- 16:15Lina: Um I guess we should have led with that.
- 16:18Lina: I guess.
- 16:18Lina: Um, so Ileana's song Bosa.
- 16:21Lina: There was a lot of backlash against that as well.
- 16:24Lina: Against her video.
- 16:25Hanan: Here, let me let me say something like I respect anybody who is trying to have like do their art, whatever art may be.
- 16:35Hanan: I don't have anything against Ileana.
- 16:36Hanan: However, that last video, right?
- 16:40Hanan: She came, first of all, I think she was like 24 or something like that.
- 16:43Hanan: She's young.
- 16:43Hanan: I don't know.
- 16:43Hanan: Right?
- 16:44Hanan: I don't know.
- 16:44Hanan: She's young.
- 16:44Hanan: Yeah, she's young.
- 16:46Hanan: I do think that she's surrounded by a lot of people.
- 16:49Hanan: Let's just say she didn't know.
- 16:50Hanan: They should have known better.
- 16:51Hanan: That's number one.
- 16:52Hanan: Number two, um, again, I'm I'm supportive of whatever art she wants to do.
- 16:59Hanan: I do think that that last video, again, like just poor taste.
- 17:04Hanan: Yeah.
- 17:04Hanan: Like, who does that?
- 17:05Hanan: And she came out and said, the symbolism in this video isn't about a uh an attraction or a love story, but I'm like, the video is literally called Altini Bosa.
- 17:15Lina: I know the so the words and the song, it's not the issue.
- 17:17Lina: It's her video.
- 17:18Lina: It's the music video in a prison.
- 17:20Lina: You know, it's just very tone-deaf.
- 17:21Lina: Okay, with everything.
- 17:22Lina: And as as Palestinians, especially like like just why like the this honestly, what I find was And the scenery was not.
- 17:28Hanan: What I found was what I found really disturbing is that for a second there, I felt like I was in Agrabah.
- 17:33Hanan: You know, like the made-up city that Disney made up for Aladdin, where everybody, like if you're South Asian or if you're from North Africa, if you're from, you know, uh the Asian subcontinent, wherever, wherever, right?
- 17:45Hanan: It doesn't matter.
- 17:46Hanan: We're all kind of the same.
- 17:47Hanan: That's kind of what bothered me about the video.
- 17:49Hanan: But you know, as like put that on the side, put what you're saying.
- 17:52Hanan: It's very like as a Palestinian experience.
- 17:54Hanan: I'm just like, what a like a like a colonist lens.
- 17:58Lina: Yeah, yeah, that's that's that's one issue.
- 18:00Lina: The other issue is like, no, because like the Palestinian, you know, she's she's half Palestinian, but like, and I get it.
- 18:05Lina: Like, I don't and then and she up, she came out and she apologized and whatever.
- 18:09Hanan: But like, I like as a Palestinian, it's honestly very I will say at least her apology seems more heartfelt than Edgier.
- 18:17Lina: Oh, for sure.
- 18:18Lina: No, but like it's just you have to be like, especially now, Hanan, with everything with the the the Palestinian hostages, and I call them hostages because they're not prisoners, they are hostages being held by Israel.
- 18:28Lina: Okay, so we see how they come out, okay.
- 18:31Lina: So it's like it's just very insensitive and very tone-deaf, and she needs to do better.
- 18:36Lina: I just didn't want the prison to be in Agrabah, that's it.
- 18:38Lina: I guess.
- 18:38Lina: I mean, like, it is very like stereotypical.
- 18:42Lina: That's the first thing.
- 18:44Lina: Like, like this is this is the thing that Edward Saeed warned us about.
- 18:47Lina: Like, like literally, I already have Philip.
- 18:50Hanan: Yeah, all I literally what they're saying, right?
- 18:52Hanan: It's like, was she in a prison in Agrabah?
- 18:54Hanan: Like, I know you you guys, it doesn't make sense.
- 18:56Hanan: How are you like your song?
- 18:57Hanan: The words, like I was listening to the words, I'm like, why did you decide to go do this?
- 19:02Hanan: There's so many ideas I would have had, right?
- 19:04Hanan: And I it's fun, and I and I love the fact that she sings in Arabic and English and Spanish, like is it the katrhirik, right?
- 19:11Hanan: Like at the same time, like it's so here's the thing though, at least she's young.
- 19:16Hanan: Um, I always hope she learns from this.
- 19:18Hanan: Yeah, I think doesn't let the people around her, and I'm not saying the people around her are gooder, but I don't really, yeah, that's not for me to decide, right?
- 19:25Hanan: I do hope that she learns that, like, even in expressing yourself, like you carry so much responsibility when you represent a specific subset of any people, not just Palestinian people, but just any people, right?
- 19:39Hanan: And a lot of people look up to you, a lot of young people look up to people like Iliana, like they want to be like her or they enjoy that there's somebody out there that represents them.
- 19:47Hanan: So I just think like I just hope she learns.
- 19:50Hanan: I uh because I don't think she's a bad person.
- 19:51Hanan: No, no, we're not saying that.
- 19:53Lina: It's just like, yeah, these things matter.
- 19:54Lina: These things matter.
- 19:56Lina: I just didn't want her to be in jail in Agrama.
- 19:58Hanan: That's it.
- 19:58Hanan: Yeah, I know.
- 19:59Hanan: But it's but no, it's a big thing.
- 20:01Hanan: And I'm laughing, but it is like as soon as I watched it, I was like, because first I I so in all honesty, I didn't see the video until I saw the controversy first.
- 20:13Hanan: Okay.
- 20:13Hanan: Not because, again, again, not because of anything against Ileana, but like I didn't, I just I and I honestly don't watch music videos, like, let's be real.
- 20:21Hanan: Um, I I really don't.
- 20:23Hanan: I have we we know that I don't have the patience or the attention spray.
- 20:27Hanan: I mean, nobody really watched.
- 20:28Hanan: I mean, like some people do, but it but I I think because Spotify now has that feature that they play the videos of the song while the song is playing.
- 20:34Hanan: But anyways, I went to watch the video, and that was my first thing.
- 20:37Hanan: I was like, she d'agara.
- 20:38Hanan: Like, when is the genie coming?
- 20:42Hanan: It's just you're right, orientalism.
- 20:44Hanan: Like that's and it's true.
- 20:46Hanan: That's the first thing that I thought about.
- 20:47Hanan: And I was like, she can do better than as much as like she did phenomenal things for like you know, just representing herself and stuff when she when she was on the tour with Coldplay, but like yeah, I was just like, girl, I think she'll learn.
- 21:01Hanan: She will learn.
- 21:02Lina: All right, so our final uh-huh controversy.
- 21:04Lina: I mean, it's not really a controversy, but like point of discussion.
- 21:07Lina: Yeah, Apple's new foldable phone.
- 21:09Hanan: Oh god.
- 21:10Lina: I'm just like, dude, I'm over them.
- 21:12Hanan: I don't really care, it's fine.
- 21:13Hanan: I I think so, like, lame.
- 21:15Hanan: No, no, it's fine.
- 21:16Hanan: I just think like I saw this meme about that that made me laugh so hard.
- 21:20Hanan: Okay.
- 21:20Hanan: And it was like, how many times do you think people are gonna open and close the phone to see how fast it breaks?
- 21:26Lina: No, I mean, like, first of all, first of all, it costs the same price as a MacBook.
- 21:29Lina: Yeah, that no, which is insanity.
- 21:31Lina: I'm never the only reason, like you know, I I had an iPhone for 13 for like four years.
- 21:35Lina: Okay, it just stopped working.
- 21:37Lina: This is the only reason I got this, okay.
- 21:39Lina: But I think this will be my last iPhone.
- 21:42Lina: And then we'll get it.
- 21:43Lina: I it doesn't matter, anything but this because like they also had they're also gonna be using uh an Israeli chip now.
- 21:48Lina: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:49Lina: From uh I think 17E.
- 21:50Lina: This isn't this isn't a 17E, but 17E and onwards, they're gonna be using an Israeli chip.
- 21:55Lina: And I'm not about that life.
- 21:56Lina: Yeah, okay.
- 21:57Lina: I'm not gonna support this stuff.
- 21:58Lina: I just don't, I mean.
- 21:59Lina: They're just so lazy.
- 22:00Lina: Like Samsung has had this for like eight years.
- 22:03Lina: So here's the thing, right?
- 22:04Hanan: You know, and I'm just why do people buy into this watch?
- 22:07Hanan: I'll tell you why.
- 22:08Hanan: I'll tell you why.
- 22:09Hanan: Because I also have an iPhone.
- 22:10Hanan: And I'll tell you why.
- 22:11Hanan: I think as humans, and I was talking about this with one of my with one of my coworkers, we just get like really we're like creatures of habits sometimes, right?
- 22:17Lina: I understand my whole like your whole life.
- 22:20Lina: Everything, like my I have a MacBook Pro, I have this, I had like whatever.
- 22:24Lina: But like also, like with everything uh uh in in Congo and how they get the cobalt and how these But they've been doing that forever.
- 22:32Lina: I know they've been doing that forever, but like I I honestly, and I get it, we need phones, like I understand.
- 22:36Hanan: I'm not saying No no no I'm not saying I'm not trying to talk you out of it.
- 22:39Lina: I'm just no but I'm what I'm just saying is like I have to be like uh um uh aware of what I'm gonna buy.
- 22:46Lina: 100%.
- 22:47Hanan: But I feel like honestly, I feel like this is the trap of like this consumerism.
- 22:53Hanan: Yeah, consumerism and the capitalist society that we live in.
- 22:56Hanan: Like you, if you it's kind of like when people push you to they're like, you have to use AI, or you're gonna be left behind.
- 23:02Hanan: It's like, no, okay, maybe you do, maybe you don't, but like why do I need to be left behind?
- 23:08Hanan: Like, why are you pushing this thing so hard on me?
- 23:10Hanan: So I feel like that's with everything.
- 23:12Hanan: I think, yeah, if you want to buy another phone, great.
- 23:14Hanan: I think listen, you obviously if you need a phone, you gotta get a phone.
- 23:17Lina: I think I'm gonna pick it up.
- 23:17Lina: I just don't want, I don't want to buy something that I don't need.
- 23:22Lina: Like, look, you have to be like really aware of this stuff.
- 23:24Lina: I was really sad when they stopped using Blackberries.
- 23:26Lina: I know.
- 23:27Lina: Remember Palm Pilots?
- 23:28Lina: Those were good too.
- 23:29Lina: Yeah, I don't know.
- 23:29Lina: But like maybe a flip phone.
- 23:31Lina: I mean And there's something there's another phone called um, what is it?
- 23:34Lina: We're not gonna get a flip phone.
- 23:35Lina: No, not a flip phone.
- 23:36Lina: There's like some other phone I can't think of the name now, where it's just simple basic phone.
- 23:41Hanan: I don't know.
- 23:42Lina: Okay, I mean, do you know how much time we'd save instead of doom scrolling?
- 23:46Hanan: But honestly, I kind of like walking around with a computer in my pocket.
- 23:50Lina: What is that even like the the phone?
- 23:52Lina: No, dude, it's very convenient, but then like when you think about how they're made and what what what you know, like what's happening again.
- 23:59Hanan: This is what I mean.
- 24:00Hanan: It's like this cycle, this vicious cycle that we're stuck in.
- 24:02Lina: Because I didn't know, I didn't know about this, like what's happening in a car.
- 24:06Lina: I didn't know this stuff.
- 24:07Lina: Like these, I I had no idea up until like a couple years ago.
- 24:10Lina: That you're like, oh my god, this is how my phone is made, yeah.
- 24:13Hanan: Right?
- 24:13Hanan: So, like, but I also feel like that a lot of that is like on purpose.
- 24:16Hanan: Again, because and again, I and I and I love that you brought up that point because we always talk about education.
- 24:21Hanan: How do you not know what's going on in Palestine?
- 24:23Hanan: It's like the same thing.
- 24:24Hanan: It's like how people don't know what's going on in Palestine.
- 24:25Hanan: Yeah, no, I know now.
- 24:27Lina: So like I just can't, I can't like like in general, and you know, I was telling you I was looking for a new purse, right?
- 24:31Lina: Like I need a bigger bag, and then like I'm trying to find like every time I see something and I look up the comments.
- 24:36Hanan: How about your Che Guevara bag?
- 24:39Lina: That was the best bag ever.
- 24:40Lina: You know, I think I may have it somewhere stashed.
- 24:43Lina: You and Dana made fun of me for the longest.
- 24:45Lina: And I think I bought it.
- 24:48Lina: Where did I buy it?
- 24:48Lina: It was like, I think it had Che Guevara on it, right?
- 24:51Lina: I think I got it from like a Hot Topic or something like that.
- 24:53Lina: Or something like that.
- 24:54Hanan: It was a big camouflage bag with Che Guevara space on it, and it was humongous, you guys.
- 24:59Hanan: And for it cost me like maybe 50 bucks.
- 25:01Hanan: Yeah, but it was hilarious.
- 25:02Hanan: It wasn't even $50.
- 25:04Lina: Maybe $30, $35.
- 25:05Lina: I mean before inflation.
- 25:06Lina: Yeah, I mean, this is like like 20 years ago.
- 25:10Lina: Um more than that.
- 25:11Lina: 22?
- 25:12Hanan: Maybe, yeah.
- 25:12Hanan: But uh, but it was hilarious because I had a Che Guevara hat too.
- 25:16Hanan: Yeah, and at that point I in my life I drove a hatchback, not a hatchback, but it was like a two-door Honda Civic, right?
- 25:23Hanan: And um, I remember that one time Lina, Dana, and I were getting in the car, and we told Lina that we don't have room in the car for your big ugly bag.
- 25:34unknown: Yeah.
- 25:34Lina: You guys were so meaningful, you know when you guys get together, you guys are so mean to me.
- 25:38Lina: We are not mean to Dana.
- 25:39Lina: And we're going in a couple weeks, and you guys better not tag team against me.
- 25:42Lina: I'm telling you right now.
- 25:43Hanan: I guess you guys will have to wait and find out.
- 25:45Lina: Okay.
- 25:45Lina: We are gonna record an episode there.
- 25:47Lina: Yeah, you have to wait and find out.
- 25:48Lina: You guys will see.
- 25:49Lina: I'm telling you, Diana, you better not tag team with her.
- 25:52Hanan: She'll be fine.
- 25:52Lina: Okay.
- 25:53Lina: You guys always tag team against me.
- 25:55Hanan: We do not.
- 25:55Lina: Whatever.
- 25:56Lina: Anyway, do you have anything else to add?
- 25:57Hanan: No, but I think this was fun.
- 25:58Hanan: This was fun.
- 25:59Hanan: I hope you guys enjoyed some of the This was quick.
- 26:01Hanan: I don't even think it's controversy as much as I feel like this is like points of discussion, things that we talk about like all week long.
- 26:07Hanan: Yeah.
- 26:08Lina: Yes.
- 26:08Lina: Until next time.
- 26:10Hanan: All right.
- 26:10Hanan: All right.
