- 0:00Midrash Rabba parashat yitra share #2 So there is a puzzle,
- 0:06chapter 3, chapter 35 of Mishley of Proverbs that reads Kavod
- 0:11hakamim yin halu. The wise receive honor and this
- 0:16is connected in this Midrash to Yitra.
- 0:18Yitra heard and he came along ZE yitra the Shah Shabbat al masha
- 0:24Nah kavod naha. This phrase is an allusion to
- 0:27Yitroff. When Yitro came to Moshe, what
- 0:29great honour he received, because Moshe came out to greet
- 0:34him, which was a big honour for Mr. Yitro, his father-in-law.
- 0:39So before telling us what honour Yitro received, the Medridge
- 0:43wants to understand why it was that Moshe went to greet his
- 0:46father-in-law. So again, it seems from the text
- 0:51that Moshe went out just sort of on his own.
- 0:54However, the Madras is going to tell us that there was a
- 0:57prestigious entourage that followed Moshe going out to
- 1:00greet Yitra, and therefore the Madras wants to know why would
- 1:04Moshe compel all these people to go out to meet Yitra.
- 1:09So the Madras continues by Yoma El Moshe.
- 1:12Yitra said to him, Anil khatan khayitra baila Khayitra, your
- 1:16father have come to come to you with your wife and her two sons
- 1:20with her. Rabbi Ashura says shala, he sent
- 1:24a message via a messenger boy to tell him that tell Moshe that he
- 1:30was coming. And Rabbi Eliazal now he said no
- 1:33Shalakhla E Garret, he sent a letter.
- 1:38So let's first understand the Torah, what the problem is so
- 1:41that that pasuk Vayyama al Masha, I'm coming.
- 1:44How could Yatra have told Masha that he had come if it's only in
- 1:48the next pasuk that we know that Masha goes out to greet his
- 1:52father-in-law? Because he was.
- 1:54So he wasn't there in that pasuk.
- 1:56So Rabi Assur says he sends a message and Rabi Aleda says it,
- 2:02it's a letter. Why?
- 2:03Because he says Ani Khatamaka Yitrak is in the first person
- 2:08and that could not have been spoken by a messenger, but
- 2:11rather must have been communicated by Yitrak words
- 2:14that he said. So someone says, oh, your
- 2:16father-in-law is coming. He wouldn't have said I, your
- 2:19father-in-law am coming. So we've got to understand both
- 2:21sides of the Midrash Vannar. And what was his message?
- 2:26I say, but Guinea act for my sake, come forward, greet me and
- 2:36honor me. So let's digress.
- 2:40We've learnt, we know from other sources.
- 2:42So we've learnt it in school in our in our childhood that Yitra
- 2:45was this big priest of idolatry and that he gave it all up.
- 2:51And that's why his daughters at the well were finding a tough
- 2:54time to get water. The shepherds were being
- 2:56horrible to them because he had pretty much been made persona
- 2:59non grata in that area. And now.
- 3:02So Yitra went through paid a huge price for his new found
- 3:07religious belief and experiences.
- 3:10Once a respected leader of Midian, his embrace of the truth
- 3:14caused him now to be ostracised by his fellow so his fellow
- 3:21Midianites. So what's he doing?
- 3:22He was prepared to undergo this humiliation for his faith in
- 3:25God. And now he's saying to Marshall,
- 3:27I want you to honour me. What's going on?
- 3:30It's the 11 approach is as follows.
- 3:33Yitro did not seek honour but rather sought to avoid
- 3:35humiliation, the pain of which the righteous feel as well.
- 3:39It was the common practice to go out and greet arriving guests.
- 3:42Certainly it was to be expected that Musharraf's own
- 3:44father-in-law would be received warmly.
- 3:47Were Yitro then to be denied this courtesy, he would suffer
- 3:50great embarrassment. He therefore said to his son,
- 3:53Law, please come out to greet me so I would be spared.
- 3:57It would really for Yitro any further embarrassment.
- 4:02But Yitro continued. According to the Midrash, VE may
- 4:05not have said bikini. If you don't want to honour me,
- 4:08then I say begin. Ishtar, I do for the sake of
- 4:10your wife. Then einat I'll say begin out
- 4:13and if you don't want to do it for her sake, then do it for
- 4:16your children. So what happened next?
- 4:19Rabi El azar omeh hakadosh baruah marilla.
- 4:22Hashem said to him, say you go out, but you're male Musha.
- 4:29So what does Hashem say to Musha and me?
- 4:32I am the one who created the world, I am the one who brings
- 4:36things close and distances. I am the one who drew yet ronier
- 4:42and didn't distance him and therefore a dumb that Shabbat to
- 4:46leave this person who came to me.
- 4:48Lord by Allen the shame Shabbat, he did so for noble purposes,
- 4:51the Lord by El Alit Gaye, he came to convert.
- 4:54So Hashem says to Moshe al Fatih Karve, you bring him close, our
- 4:57Tariq EU, don't distance him. And immediately if I hate to say
- 5:02Moshe Ali Kraut, no Moshe went out.
- 5:05So what was the motivation for Moshe going out?
- 5:08Differences of opinion in the Midrash.
- 5:09We will continue this thought Bezrat Hashem next time.
- 5:12Have a great day.
