Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Walk the Pod, your daily walking
- 0:13Speaker 1: show where I take my podcast for a walk because
- 0:16Speaker 1: I don't have a dog. You're very welcome along. This
- 0:19Speaker 1: is episode 9, series 65 of the Daily Walking Podcast.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It tempts you away from your desk to walk in
- 0:26Speaker 1: nature for just 10 minutes. This series we've been talking
- 0:30Speaker 1: about confidence and today summing up everything we've learned and
- 0:36Speaker 1: looking forward to what might be next.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Welcome to Walk the Pod.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Confidence is a preference for the habitual voyeur of what
- 0:55Speaker 1: is known as park life. Now, I said yesterday that
- 0:58Speaker 1: that was Damon Alban talking on the beginning of the
- 1:01Speaker 1: song Park Life by Blur, because in my mind it
- 1:04Speaker 1: must be, mustn't it?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Without really thinking too much about it.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Thank you to everybody who sent me corrections, clarifications and
- 1:11Speaker 1: closure points to say it wasn't Damon Alban, it was
- 1:15Speaker 1: Phil Daniels with the introduction to that song. So my apologies.
- 1:23Speaker 1: So just as I was talking about failure and how
- 1:26Speaker 1: important it is just to do things and not worry
- 1:29Speaker 1: too much about whether we have to iterate or whether
- 1:31Speaker 1: they fail or not, I was in fact setting myself
- 1:36Speaker 1: up for a fall without realising.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Thank you so much for.
- 1:40Speaker 1: All your thoughts about confidence this series. We have discussed
- 1:43Speaker 1: just a few angles on the topic. I don't feel
- 1:46Speaker 1: like we've made huge inroads into it, but a few
- 1:51Speaker 1: things that have stood out to me have been that
- 1:56Speaker 1: we've talked about how confidence can come with experience, can
- 2:04Speaker 1: be evidence-based. We can build a body of data to
- 2:09Speaker 1: support our opinions and our assertions, and confidence can come
- 2:14Speaker 1: through that evidence.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Or we can.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Build confidence in one area and then hope to bring
- 2:22Speaker 1: a kernel of confidence over.
- 2:25Speaker 2: To a new area.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And I think my own personal conclusion is that it
- 2:33Speaker 1: certainly isn't universal. I can't be confident about everything, nor.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Should I be.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And that perhaps kind of touches on the idea of
- 2:45Speaker 1: Possibly we have more confidence about something before we start
- 2:48Speaker 1: actually looking into it. And then once we start really
- 2:52Speaker 1: engaging with a new skill or a new topic that
- 2:55Speaker 1: we're trying to learn about, we realize how much we
- 2:59Speaker 1: don't know. And at that point, our confidence actually goes down.
- 3:04Speaker 1: So starting to engage with a new thing actually might
- 3:06Speaker 1: cause a dip in our confidence before we start building
- 3:10Speaker 1: those skills or knowledge up. And I've certainly found that
- 3:14Speaker 1: in my own experience with learning all kinds of languages, skills, performance, ability.
- 3:27Speaker 1: I'm very confident about things when I start. I'm really
- 3:29Speaker 1: enthusiastic in a confident way that I will be able
- 3:32Speaker 1: to work out how to do them. Then I start
- 3:35Speaker 1: finding out what it would take to be able to
- 3:36Speaker 1: do them.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Then I suffer a huge hit to my confidence. And
- 3:40Speaker 2: then if I.
- 3:42Speaker 1: persevere with it my confidence kind of builds up slowly
- 3:49Speaker 1: but it takes a very long time actually the the
- 3:52Speaker 1: building out of the ditch the building of the path
- 3:56Speaker 1: out of the ditch is rather.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Slow and long.
- 4:01Speaker 1: But um it's been a really interesting discussion so thank
- 4:04Speaker 1: you so much for every contribution that has come in
- 4:07Speaker 1: in whatever format to the series i really really appreciate.
- 4:11Speaker 2: It What's going to come next? Well, I don't know exactly.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I know there will be more series of Walk the
- 4:16Speaker 1: Pod in 2027.
- 4:19Speaker 2: At least six.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I think it's fair to say we've done six this year.
- 4:23Speaker 2: There might be another one. I just don't know. Let's see.
- 4:28Speaker 1: But very grateful to you for your walking with me
- 4:33Speaker 1: this year. And I'll certainly be bringing bonus episodes to
- 4:40Speaker 1: the community on Patreon. And I'll be thanking the community
- 4:44Speaker 1: on Patreon tomorrow as well. And if you would like
- 4:48Speaker 1: to know what that's all about, you can find out
- 4:50Speaker 1: more by going to patreon.com forward slash Rachel Wheelie or
- 4:53Speaker 1: just walkthepod.com and you'll find a link there to take
- 4:57Speaker 1: you through to join the Walk the Pod Lunchtime Walk Club.
- 5:14Speaker 1: What can I see directly in front of me? Well,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'm actually walking on Imperial College London South Kensington campus
- 5:22Speaker 1: this lunchtime because I have just a small amount of
- 5:25Speaker 1: time to record the pod between commitments at work. And
- 5:29Speaker 1: tonight we have the Imperial Lates. Nearly 2,500 people are
- 5:35Speaker 1: registered to come, find out more about robots at Imperial College,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and I'll be hosting a discussion, What My Robot Taught
- 5:42Speaker 1: Me About Being Human, which I'm very much looking forward to,
- 5:45Speaker 1: interviewing a professor and two researchers from Imperial's Morph Lab.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Lots and lots of people around this lunchtime. Rather a
- 6:00Speaker 1: grey sky. It looks like it's going to rain but
- 6:03Speaker 1: I've checked the weather forecast and it is not going
- 6:06Speaker 1: to rain today. It's just going to be cloudy. We've
- 6:09Speaker 1: got some rather grumbly clouds in the sky hanging ominously overhead.
- 6:15Speaker 1: And I can see the tops of some trees over
- 6:18Speaker 1: the college buildings. And some multicoloured banners which are hanging
- 6:24Speaker 1: from lampposts which are rather jolly. And some rather optimistic
- 6:34Speaker 1: palm trees which have been planted in the middle of
- 6:38Speaker 1: a sort of cafe area here with chairs and tables
- 6:41Speaker 1: and hundreds of students sat around eating their lunch. The
- 6:51Speaker 1: air temperature is definitely dropping now. We're approaching late October
- 6:57Speaker 1: in 2026, if you're listening to this in the future.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And it's definitely starting to feel colder. The people sat
- 7:10Speaker 1: around me are in puffy jackets. Sometimes with hoodies underneath.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Trying to keep warm. Buying delicious looking food and covering
- 7:31Speaker 1: it with chilli sauce. Because if we can't feel warm
- 7:34Speaker 1: through our clothing, we'll have to feel warm through spicy
- 7:37Speaker 1: condiments instead.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Both approaches are valid, dear friends.
- 7:49Speaker 1: And I've really enjoyed the contributions to our various walking
- 7:53Speaker 1: games this week. At Walk the Pod we play lots
- 7:56Speaker 1: of quest games, walking quests. You can quest for colours,
- 8:03Speaker 1: letters of the alphabet, numbers, shapes. And it's very simple.
- 8:11Speaker 1: We just ask you to keep your eyes peeled for
- 8:14Speaker 1: things as you go on your daily walk. And if
- 8:16Speaker 1: you're on your walk, when you see the next number
- 8:18Speaker 1: in the sequence, or the next letter in the sequence,
- 8:23Speaker 1: or the color that we're looking for this week, you
- 8:24Speaker 1: just take a picture of it and put it on
- 8:27Speaker 1: our Discord server and reap emoji rewards.
- 8:31Speaker 2: What does emoji rewards mean?
- 8:33Speaker 1: It means that if it's, say it's, for example, a
- 8:36Speaker 1: yellow week in Color Quest, which it is, and you
- 8:39Speaker 1: post a picture of something yellow from your walk.
- 8:43Speaker 1: We will mark it with a yellow heart to say that.
- 8:49Speaker 2: That is yellow. Good job.
- 8:51Speaker 1: And if that helps you to get out of the
- 8:53Speaker 1: door for your daily walk, you might find it a
- 8:57Speaker 1: helpful way to sort of gamify your walking slightly.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Or you might think it's silly.
- 9:02Speaker 1: It's okay. It's okay if you're thinking, yeah, I don't
- 9:05Speaker 1: have time for that. Thank you for walking with me,
- 9:10Speaker 1: dear friends. This has been the ninth episode of Series 65,
- 9:12Speaker 1: so we have one left coming to you tomorrow lunchtime.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And that'll be the end of the series. Take care
- 9:20Speaker 1: of your beautiful mind, yourselves, and each other. And I
- 9:26Speaker 1: look forward to bringing you a walk from the woods
- 9:28Speaker 1: tomorrow lunchtime, for I will be working from home and
- 9:31Speaker 1: walking in.
- 9:32Speaker 2: The woods, as I love to do, as often as possible.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I look forward to speaking to you then.
