Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Amb Waltz ' Iran's currency is TANKING'
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: President Trump calls Iran a failing nation as the strategy
- 0:03Speaker 1: to defeat the rogue regime shifts from strikes to sanctions.
- 0:07Speaker 1: The White House is ratcheting up the pressure, launching what
- 0:10Speaker 1: Treasury Secretary Scott Besant called an economic D-Day to cut
- 0:14Speaker 1: off the regime's oil revenue and financial lifelines.
- 0:17Speaker 2: But in order for that to work, the rest of
- 0:19Speaker 2: the world has to comply.
- 0:21Speaker 1: So Secretary Besson is bringing that message to G20 finance
- 0:24Speaker 1: leaders this weekend. And next month, Ambassador Mike Walsh will
- 0:28Speaker 1: speak with his counterparts at the U.N. General Assembly to
- 0:31Speaker 1: make sure the threat from Iran is eliminated once and
- 0:34Speaker 1: for all.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Ambassador, welcome back to the show.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Secretary Besson, of course, outlined that economic pressure campaign against Tehran.
- 0:43Speaker 1: But this is also going to require that the rest
- 0:46Speaker 1: of the world participates and cuts off the economic leakage, essentially,
- 0:51Speaker 1: that's been sustaining this radical regime. So how do you
- 0:55Speaker 1: have that conversation with your global counterparts, whether at this
- 0:58Speaker 1: G20 meeting or the upcoming U.N.
- 1:00Speaker 2: General Assembly? What message do world leaders actually need to
- 1:04Speaker 2: hear on this?
- 1:05Speaker 3: Well, thanks, Laura.
- 1:06Speaker 4: And just to set the stage for really what you're
- 1:10Speaker 4: asking here, people need to understand that Iran's Revolutionary Guard
- 1:15Speaker 4: controls about 50 percent of Iran's overall economy. They don't
- 1:20Speaker 4: care about the Iranian people. They massacred 40,000 people. just
- 1:24Speaker 4: a few months ago for daring to protest. They're still
- 1:27Speaker 4: executing people right now as we speak, young students just
- 1:31Speaker 4: trying to speak up for a better life. What they
- 1:33Speaker 4: do care about is regime control and their money. And
- 1:37Speaker 4: that's what President Trump and Scott Bessett's economic D-Day is
- 1:41Speaker 4: going after.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Their currency is tanking. Inflation is out of control there.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Their foreign currency reserves are gone.
- 1:49Speaker 3: There's runs on their banks.
- 1:51Speaker 4: But the message that Secretary Bassett will send and that
- 1:54Speaker 4: I will send here at the U.N. is, You're either
- 1:57Speaker 4: against us or you're with us. And you don't want
- 2:00Speaker 4: to be siding with Iran right now. And oh, by
- 2:02Speaker 4: the way, that's not just a U.S.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Message. There have been dozens of U.N.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Security Council resolutions saying Iran cannot have a nuke, cannot
- 2:11Speaker 4: have ballistic missiles to terrorize the world, and that we
- 2:15Speaker 4: actually had last year snapback sanctions for where the rest
- 2:19Speaker 4: of the world got back on board with our sanctioned regime.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Final point, you can put sanctions in place, but you
- 2:26Speaker 4: have to actually enforce them.
- 2:28Speaker 3: And that's the next part of the message.
- 2:30Speaker 4: You have all of these institutions and banks and shell
- 2:33Speaker 4: companies that, frankly, even some of our friends have turned
- 2:37Speaker 4: a blind eye on.
- 2:38Speaker 3: No more. Let's crack down. Let's cut these economic lifelines.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Let's create, as President Trump envisions, a world where our
- 2:47Speaker 4: children aren't terrorized by a genocidal Islamic regime with nuclear weapons.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And love the change in strategy. And obviously, we're all
- 2:58Speaker 1: going to watch to see what happens there. But speaking
- 3:00Speaker 1: of UNGA, there was a lot of speculation this week
- 3:03Speaker 1: about a meeting that you had with New York City
- 3:06Speaker 1: Mayor Zoran Mamdani. So, Ambassador, put the rumor mill to
- 3:10Speaker 1: rest about those discussions.
- 3:11Speaker 2: What was going on there?
- 3:13Speaker 4: Well, look, Laura, I could tell you as a former
- 3:17Speaker 4: congressman in another life, we don't agree on much politically.
- 3:21Speaker 4: But when you have one place in the world where
- 3:25Speaker 4: you have over 150 prime ministers, presidents, foreign ministers or
- 3:30Speaker 4: entire delegations coming, I mean, you know how the traffic
- 3:33Speaker 4: is in New York coming to one concentrated place. We
- 3:37Speaker 4: all have to work together to keep everyone safe. So
- 3:40Speaker 4: it was really about conversations about that kind of coordination,
- 3:44Speaker 4: number one.
- 3:45Speaker 3: But then, two, a lot of folks don't realize the U.N.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Puts billions of dollars into New York City. You have
- 3:53Speaker 4: hundreds of embassies and residences. You have over 35,000 diplomats
- 3:57Speaker 4: and their families. And so there was a lot of
- 4:00Speaker 4: payment issues.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I mean, look, it was nothing too spicy, Laura.
- 4:05Speaker 4: It's really, you know, making sure that all of this
- 4:09Speaker 4: is coordinated. And when people ask, look, what the heck
- 4:12Speaker 4: is the UN good for? Well, President Trump is a
- 4:14Speaker 4: president of peace. He puts diplomacy first. And you need
- 4:18Speaker 4: one place in the world where everybody can at least
- 4:20Speaker 4: come and talk. And I, as a former soldier, I
- 4:24Speaker 4: tell my team all the time, if we're using words
- 4:26Speaker 4: and not bullets, then we're on the right track.
- 4:29Speaker 3: And so we talked.
- 4:31Speaker 4: And just to make sure that that UN General Assembly
- 4:35Speaker 4: comes off without a hitch.
- 4:36Speaker 3: By the way, it's no longer UNGA. It's MUNGA. Make
- 4:39Speaker 3: the UN great again. That's my charge from President Trump.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I we like that. We like the sound of that
- 4:45Speaker 1: for sure. I know there are a lot of ideas
- 4:48Speaker 1: swirling out there. So thank you for addressing that with us.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I want to get your take on this now. There
- 4:52Speaker 1: was another meeting also that grabbed some headlines this week,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and that took place between CIA Director John Radcliffe and.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Intelligence officials in Moscow.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Now, obviously, the exact content of that meeting is not public,
- 5:04Speaker 1: but it did shine a light on Russia's relationship with
- 5:07Speaker 1: Iran and and the potential for a nuclear deal between
- 5:10Speaker 1: the two. Now, do you think Vladimir Putin knows better
- 5:14Speaker 1: than to try and undermine President Trump's strategy there in
- 5:17Speaker 1: the Middle East?
- 5:18Speaker 4: Well, look, I mean, you know, I just outlined what
- 5:22Speaker 4: President Trump, Scott Besant, Marco Rubio, what all of our
- 5:25Speaker 4: message is. You need to stop supporting this genocidal regime.
- 5:30Speaker 4: And we know Iran has provided Russia drones that they're
- 5:33Speaker 4: using to hit Ukraine. Russia has provided Iran with certain
- 5:37Speaker 4: technology and economic support, and it needs to stop.
- 5:41Speaker 3: So I don't want to speak for Director Radcliffe.
- 5:45Speaker 4: I'm glad he went over to deliver a very direct
- 5:47Speaker 4: message from the president. But the other piece, Laura, as
- 5:50Speaker 4: the president has repeatedly said, this war has to stop
- 5:54Speaker 4: in Ukraine. There are over 1,000 people dying per day.
- 5:59Speaker 4: And there are constant, constant threats of it spilling over
- 6:04Speaker 4: into NATO countries or elsewhere. that would drag in the
- 6:07Speaker 4: United States in a way that nobody wants.
- 6:11Speaker 3: So, look, it has to stop.
- 6:13Speaker 2: That's right.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, the president, have put.
- 6:16Speaker 3: A plan on the table, and we need everybody to
- 6:18Speaker 3: get on board. All right.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Well, Ambassador Mike Walz, we know you're very busy. Thank
- 6:23Speaker 1: you so much for taking the time to join us tonight.
- 6:26Speaker 2: We appreciate it.
- 6:28Speaker 3: All right. Thank you.
