- 0:00Speaker 1: If you're thinking about a career break, now that you
- 0:02Speaker 1: know what it is, if you're thinking about asking your employer, hey,
- 0:06Speaker 1: we've got sabbaticals around here. Who's given out sabbatical? If
- 0:10Speaker 1: that's you, Let's go through really step one of the process,
- 0:14Speaker 1: and that's preparing for a career break or a sabbatical.
- 0:17Speaker 1: So as we go into what that preparation is, if
- 0:19Speaker 1: you remember nothing else in today's time, I want you
- 0:24Speaker 1: to remember that whatever you're thinking about doing be it.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Maybe you're done with work completely, Maybe you just need
- 0:30Speaker 1: a longer break, maybe four weeks. Maybe your company does
- 0:33Speaker 1: offer a sabbatical program and you haven't taken advantage of
- 0:36Speaker 1: it before filling the brain reason, I want you to
- 0:40Speaker 1: prepare well. And as you're preparing well, I want you
- 0:43Speaker 1: to take into consideration mindset, how can you be creative?
- 0:47Speaker 1: What societal, generational, or cultural norms might you need to
- 0:50Speaker 1: separate from to help you make those decisions? And who
- 0:54Speaker 1: needs to support you. Deck one is to do your research.
- 0:57Speaker 1: When you're thinking about taking a career break for whatever reason,
- 1:01Speaker 1: do your research. Google is free or safari thing right,
- 1:04Speaker 1: we don't, we're we're equal opportunity. Search engine folks here right,
- 1:09Speaker 1: whatever your search engine of choices, use it. Start connecting
- 1:14Speaker 1: with your network. Who are the folks in your what
- 1:16Speaker 1: we call them at my company, what we call them
- 1:19Speaker 1: your top five or your trusted ten or your board
- 1:23Speaker 1: of directors. Who are the sponsors, who are the mentors?
- 1:26Speaker 1: Who are the folks that typically pour into you that
- 1:29Speaker 1: you can use as a sounding board that you can
- 1:31Speaker 1: start having these conversations with, And the conversation starts real simply, Hey,
- 1:36Speaker 1: I'm thinking about stepping away from work for six weeks,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and let those words hang out in the air. Get
- 1:41Speaker 1: used to saying, hey, I think I need to step
- 1:45Speaker 1: away for a month. You know what, my company offers,
- 1:47Speaker 1: a sabbatical. I think I'm going to take advantage of
- 1:49Speaker 1: that and let those words hang out. See what comes
- 1:52Speaker 1: back for your research, See what comes back with your network.
- 1:56Speaker 1: And while you're doing your research, especially if you're in
- 1:59Speaker 1: a more nine to five type situation, get mega familiar
- 2:04Speaker 1: with your HR folks, Get mega familiar with your employe handbook. Now,
- 2:09Speaker 1: prior to executive coaching, running my own business, just setting
- 2:14Speaker 1: across the world, scared with my dramamine in one hand
- 2:17Speaker 1: and my Metallica playlist in the other so I can
- 2:20Speaker 1: have something super distracting on the plane. I also came
- 2:23Speaker 1: from a very strict and stringent corporate environment. Again I
- 2:28Speaker 1: go back to I've been drinking stale breakroom coffee with
- 2:31Speaker 1: an asset managed laptop and a badge since I was nineteen,
- 2:34Speaker 1: so I know how the rules of that road goes.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Also in that corporate space, I was a humble HR practitioner,
- 2:40Speaker 1: so multiple sides of the house, from training and documentation
- 2:45Speaker 1: to employee relations, recruiting, onboarding, talent acquisition, benefits, administration, and
- 2:51Speaker 1: wealth management. If there was a policy in our company,
- 2:55Speaker 1: I knew about it. If there was a handbook to
- 2:57Speaker 1: be written, I absolutely knew about it. I would like
- 3:01Speaker 1: you to take that same level of inquiry, that same
- 3:04Speaker 1: level of research into your prep work. Find out does
- 3:07Speaker 1: your company have a sabbatical program. I have a partner
- 3:11Speaker 1: coach who did her first in person event, and she
- 3:15Speaker 1: brought up the topic of sabbaticals. She knew that the
- 3:18Speaker 1: company that she was working with offered a sabbatical program,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and in the conference room, crazy said, hey, hey, raise
- 3:25Speaker 1: your hand if you know about such and such a
- 3:27Speaker 1: sabbatical program, and like two people raise their hands, but
- 3:30Speaker 1: it was a company thing, like the company offered it,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and the rest of the one hundred and fifty people
- 3:34Speaker 1: in that room didn't know that their company offered a
- 3:37Speaker 1: sabbatical program. So that's what I'm talking about when we
- 3:40Speaker 1: say do your research. Step two is to really consider
- 3:43Speaker 1: all of the impacts you're considering. You're letting those words
- 3:47Speaker 1: hang out there. You may be doing some math on
- 3:50Speaker 1: the back of a napkin. You're not limiting yourself here,
- 3:53Speaker 1: but you're thinking about all the spaces you being away
- 3:56Speaker 1: from work will impact. And typically the biggest impact is
- 4:00Speaker 1: then pockets. Our money is going to be the biggest
- 4:03Speaker 1: driver of a career break, a sabbatical, or if it's
- 4:06Speaker 1: time to step away from work. So what might that
- 4:08Speaker 1: mean for you? You may be considering your budget here
- 4:11Speaker 1: as a household. You may be considering things that you
- 4:14Speaker 1: may cut out of the budget for a certain period
- 4:16Speaker 1: of time so you can facilitate not being at work
- 4:20Speaker 1: for four weeks six weeks.
- 4:23Speaker 2: This episode is brought to you by P and C Bank.

- 6:14Speaker 3: An illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping a child
- 6:17Speaker 3: in Massachusetts. An MS thirteen gang member from Al Salvador
- 6:21Speaker 3: accused of murdering a Texas man of Venezuelan charged with
- 6:25Speaker 3: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 6:29Speaker 3: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 6:33Speaker 3: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy Noman, the United States
- 6:37Speaker 3: Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted illegal border
- 6:42Speaker 3: crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over
- 6:45Speaker 3: one hundred thousand illegal aliens have been arrested. If you
- 6:49Speaker 3: are here illegally, your next you will be fined nearly
- 6:53Speaker 3: one thousand dollars a day, imprisoned, and deported. You will
- 6:57Speaker 3: never return. But if you register using our DVP home
- 7:00Speaker 3: app and leave now, you could be allowed to return legally.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Do what's right, leave now under President Trump America's laws,
- 7:09Speaker 3: order and families will be protected sponsored by the United
- 7:12Speaker 3: States Department of Homeland Security.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Six months on an unpaid sabbatical, right a year on
- 7:17Speaker 1: an unpaid sabbatical. But I don't just want you to
- 7:19Speaker 1: think about your take home money or your salary. I
- 7:22Speaker 1: also want you to take into consideration, especially if you
- 7:25Speaker 1: work in a traditional nine to five space, what amenities
- 7:28Speaker 1: and benefits are you not paying into by not earning
- 7:32Speaker 1: a paycheck? Your Social Security? Is it your retirement? Is
- 7:36Speaker 1: it your match? Is it your four oh one K?
- 7:39Speaker 1: Is it your HSA?
- 7:40Speaker 2: Right?
- 7:41Speaker 1: What are the things that are also not getting your
- 7:43Speaker 1: money if you step away? And I understand and recognize
- 7:46Speaker 1: that some of those items can be a little daunting
- 7:49Speaker 1: to think about. We work so hard to take care
- 7:52Speaker 1: of ourselves, to take care of our family. Make sure
- 7:54Speaker 1: the car note is paid, make sure the mortgage is paid,
- 7:57Speaker 1: make sure we got a little bit of money to
- 7:58Speaker 1: you know, maybe take ourselves out, get hair done, get
- 8:01Speaker 1: nails done, hang with the friends. All that goes into
- 8:05Speaker 1: the impact when you're thinking about your career break and
- 8:08Speaker 1: your sabbatical. Health is another one. If you decide to
- 8:11Speaker 1: make a clean break, maybe post layoff, and you say,
- 8:15Speaker 1: I'm actually not going to go back into the workforce. Yeah,
- 8:17Speaker 1: so what does healthcare look like for you? Going back
- 8:20Speaker 1: to bullet point number one, do your research. Once you've
- 8:23Speaker 1: asked all the universe the bigger questions, start to develop
- 8:26Speaker 1: your plan or strategy. It doesn't have to be perfect.
- 8:28Speaker 1: It just has to work for you, right. It doesn't
- 8:31Speaker 1: have to be at the income level or the income
- 8:33Speaker 1: bracket of your peer or your mom, or your sore
- 8:36Speaker 1: war or your flat brother from college. It needs to
- 8:39Speaker 1: work for you. And so as you're developing that plan
- 8:41Speaker 1: and strategy draft, have that as a workable document. Maybe
- 8:45Speaker 1: you start having those conversations, what are the bullet points?
- 8:48Speaker 1: What are their stops and starts in your plan? With
- 8:51Speaker 1: your network. If you're asking for a career breaker, you're
- 8:55Speaker 1: going to tap into that sabbatical program that your company offers, awesome,
- 8:58Speaker 1: make the ask. Now that you have your data, Now
- 9:02Speaker 1: that you know kind of what the financial impacts are,
- 9:04Speaker 1: what are the family impacts, what are those health impacts,
- 9:07Speaker 1: you can start to have the conversation with your boss,
- 9:10Speaker 1: your leader, your skip level, whoever that may be. Start
- 9:13Speaker 1: to engage your stakeholders. You're thinking about taking a break,
- 9:16Speaker 1: quitting your job, or going on a sabbatical. Who does
- 9:18Speaker 1: that impact within your place of employment? I want to
- 9:21Speaker 1: pause here for the entrepreneurs in the room, especially the
- 9:25Speaker 1: individuals who are true and tried solopreneurs. You are the CFO,
- 9:30Speaker 1: the CEO, you are the sous chef. You are the
- 9:33Speaker 1: janitorial waste compliance person of your company, as well as
- 9:37Speaker 1: the administrative assistant. All these steps still apply to you.
- 9:41Speaker 1: You get to divide your research considering the impacts developing
- 9:47Speaker 1: your planner strategy with the multiple facets of your personality.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Right when you think about your business, are you at
- 9:53Speaker 1: a space to leave the startup role, move into plan
- 9:57Speaker 1: B or move into a session B strap rategy where
- 10:00Speaker 1: you're ready to scale your business? Do you have to
- 10:03Speaker 1: do that before the end of the year. Are there
- 10:05Speaker 1: projects within your business or are there product launches that
- 10:08Speaker 1: you're thinking about that you may want a slow roll,
- 10:11Speaker 1: Maybe take some time off with that long money, and
- 10:14Speaker 1: then come back six months, eight months and maybe be
- 10:19Speaker 1: even a more refreshed, a more gooder entrepreneur when you
- 10:24Speaker 1: come back right, same still applies here if you're running
- 10:27Speaker 1: your own business. Either way, when you're having those communications,
- 10:30Speaker 1: make sure you give enough notice. You decide to step
- 10:33Speaker 1: away for a career break and you're going to be
- 10:34Speaker 1: gone a month, who's doing your work while you're gone?
- 10:37Speaker 1: Who needs to take into consideration some of the productivity
- 10:42Speaker 1: impacts in your place of employment? Do you run a team?
- 10:45Speaker 1: Do you have direct reports that typically come to you?
- 10:48Speaker 1: What's going to be their what's going to be their
- 10:51Speaker 1: level of authority? What permissions might they need while you're out?
- 10:55Speaker 1: What privilege and access do you need to grant them
- 10:58Speaker 1: before you step aside? And keep the receipts. And what
- 11:01Speaker 1: I'm saying here is get it all in writing. If
- 11:04Speaker 1: you are going to your employer and you're saying, hey,
- 11:07Speaker 1: can I take a career break? This is the reason
- 11:09Speaker 1: why I want to take a career break, and here's
- 11:11Speaker 1: the data behind it, and they say yes, absolutely, La toy.
- 11:14Speaker 1: You can take a career break for four weeks and
- 11:16Speaker 1: we'll see you back in a month. Get it in writing.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Even if the conversation is verbal, summarize that conversation via
- 11:23Speaker 1: email and keep all of the receipts, from the time
- 11:27Speaker 1: that you plan and prep to the time you make
- 11:29Speaker 1: the ask, moving on to the time that you take
- 11:32Speaker 1: the break, and what's going to happen when you come back,
- 11:35Speaker 1: if you come back. We'll get to that.
- 11:36Speaker 3: An illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping a child
- 11:40Speaker 3: in Massachusetts. An MS thirteen gang member from El Salvador
- 11:44Speaker 3: accused of murdering a Texas man of Venezuelan charged with
- 11:48Speaker 3: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 11:52Speaker 3: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 11:56Speaker 3: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christineoman, the United Statestary of
- 12:00Speaker 3: Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted illegal border crossings are
- 12:05Speaker 3: at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over one hundred
- 12:08Speaker 3: thousand illegal aliens have been arrested. If you are here illegally,
- 12:13Speaker 3: your next you will be fined nearly one thousand dollars
- 12:16Speaker 3: a day, imprisoned, and deported. You will never return. But
- 12:20Speaker 3: if you register using our CBP home app and leave now,
- 12:24Speaker 3: you could be allowed to return legally. Do what's right.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Leave now. Under President Trump America's laws, border and families
- 12:33Speaker 3: will be protected sponsored by the United States Department of
- 12:35Speaker 3: Homeland Security,
