- 0:51Slash Radio Detectives. All right, well, before we do get started,
- 0:58I wanted to let you know that I have a new book out. The
- 1:02title is Powerhouse Hard Bress. It's a continuation of the series of superhero comedy
- 1:08novels have been writing and this one is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble
- 1:15dot com and also for the Kindle and as a right now, Scott Wilcox,
- 1:19or audio book narrator, is hard at work recording this and hopefully we'll
- 1:26have audiobook version out sometime in August, so I'm looking forward to that.
- 1:34And this week we have a couple of events going on. We have on
- 1:42Friday for those of you in the Boise, Idaho area, I'll be doing
- 1:47a book signing at the Hastings Store at seventy five hundred West Fairview. There's
- 1:53a calfc Slash Long John Silver's out front as well. As a Wells Farko
- 1:59Bank and I'll be there from four to nine mountain time. Also, if
- 2:02you can't quite make the drive to Boise, we have a virtual book launch
- 2:08we'll be going on on Wednesday, so tomorrow, and we'll be there from
- 2:13six thirty to nine mountain time. All right, Well, we're beginning a
- 2:17new radio series today. This one is called Mister Moto. Now. I
- 2:23played a Mister Moto movie for this month's Video Theater and one I think one
- 2:30of the better ones, mister Moto's Last Warning. Really the Mister the Mister
- 2:42Mono radio series is an entirely different incarnation. While the original Mister Moto was
- 2:51Japanese mister Iamoto, the featured character in this series was Japanese American born in
- 3:02the United States. Series aired over the NBC Radio network from May nineteen fifty
- 3:12one to October nineteen fifty one, so kind of followed a similar length of
- 3:22airing as The Big Guy from a year before. NBC Radio series with Detective
- 3:30Show starting in the nineteen fifties really did not have a lot of luck.
- 3:37The big exception of that was very Craig Confidential Investigator, which we played.
- 3:40So let's go ahead and take a listen to today's episode A force called x
- 3:46O seven. And this sounds like an audition recording, kind of minimal on
- 3:51music and effects. But let's go ahead and take a listen. The night's
- 3:58going fourth called EXO seven drying Mister Moto, Mister I A Moto. I
- 4:09stood there in a room in their View Hospital in New York, beside the
- 4:12young doctor. We watched the patient on the bed with a sort of son
- 4:15incredible horr. The woman's condition was so fantastic as to defy all all reason.
- 4:24She had grown visibly smaller in the back quarter hour. Her body was
- 4:30not that of a woman, but of a child. The young doctor sixth
- 4:35were princed around the foot of the iron hospital bed. Mister Moto, this
- 4:40is unbelievable. Yes, I can't stand it. It's sickly. Yes,
- 4:43that's happened to him. What's called this the thousand apology doctor. But this
- 4:47is a secret which must be kept at all costs. The assignment on Exto
- 4:54seven started with a personal phone call last Saturday. I had just completed a
- 4:59case in Carol for US intelligence and had returned to New York for a rest
- 5:02and a holiday. I wanted nothing so much as I wanted quiet. I
- 5:08was annoyed when my phone rang at ten in the evening. I was already
- 5:12in debt. Hello Moto, Yes, moto is hard? Counton here?
- 5:26Why, profesforth Canton, I've been in Europe and I've been meaning to call
- 5:29you ever since I returned. But can I show you tonight? There's an
- 5:32entrance Central Park. There's an infant into Central Park at Fifth Even You're ninetieth
- 5:39Street. Can you be there in half an hour? You mean outside in
- 5:43this weather? Please? Modo. I know what I'm doing, this is
- 5:46desperately. Then of course I'll meet you anywhere. You say, since even
- 5:49you're ninetieth Street entry to the park in half an hour? Can't you give
- 5:54me any idea of what? Hello? Hello? Who is there? Can
- 6:03make muddy water clear? But if let alone, it will become clear of
- 6:12itself. Professor Howard Carlton was head of the civic department of one of the
- 6:17greatest universities in the world. I met him first in Hong Kong many years
- 6:23ago, and I think I can say we each treasured each other's friendship.
- 6:30I took a cab to Fifth Avenue and nightly street, driveling rain made murky
- 6:35globs of the street light at my right, fetch the park manst it and
- 6:45so very dark. The occasional taxi hurried by as if anxious to get away
- 6:55from the black wetness of the night. Suddenly, out of the mist I
- 7:00recognize Howard Autums last his body. He was wearing a raincoat and his hat
- 7:05was pulled down over his face. His walk suggested one thing. See,
- 7:13I say, Moto, this is awfully decent of you, Howard? What
- 7:15is this all about? Why must we eat outside in the setch of weather?
- 7:18Surely they must wait? But what is it that may have been followed?
- 7:25Let's go out into the park a bit. We can sit on one
- 7:28of the ventures. There. You are a saying, aren't you yeah?
- 7:36Of what? Specifically? Being murdered? Murdered? Why? Who? Men
- 7:43who write meiling me back? Meaning you quite successfully with what something I did?
- 7:48Once? Can we sit down here? I suppose you start at the
- 7:57beginning? Mother? What is it I thought I saw someone? I'm afraid
- 8:05I'm in a complete funk. Have you ever heard of the Michaels and men?
- 8:09The experiment? Never? Well? As as you know, I'm not
- 8:13only ahead of the physics department at the university, I'm also in charge of
- 8:18the Manhattan Atomical Research Foundation. Look. Some time ago, as you may
- 8:22read in the papers, there was a twenty two hundred ton cosmotron competed at
- 8:26the Brookhaden National Laboratory, a two billion volte attom snasher. It spews out
- 8:31a beam of hydrogen atoms traveling at the speed of light. This beam is
- 8:37directed by a searchlight who were speaking to the interior of heavier atoms. The
- 8:41cosmotronic Bookhaden is service say the climax of men struggle to harness the power of
- 8:46matter. We are here perhaps to discussif it I'm I'm trying to say that
- 8:52we've invented a weapon. Will my assistant and I at the Foundation, Yes,
- 8:56an atomic weapon. The bed ladies my assistant started working with a degenerate
- 9:03form of radium. Who was radium some ten years ago. It was to
- 9:07be a chop with cancer. The Atomic Energy Commission realized it had other possibilities.
- 9:13Only doctor Bedley I worked on the final face off it. Now we've
- 9:16finished. Go on, Well, the weapon it's very simple, it's portable,
- 9:22light and so Goodney It's like having a thousandth part of an Eton bomb
- 9:28and a light bulb. Only George Bedley and I are in possession of the
- 9:31complete plans. And no, I'm being black needled for what. Twenty seven
- 9:39years ago, at Oxford University, I joined the Communist Party. I see,
- 9:46in those days communism was rubber fashionable. I took the usual nouns one
- 9:50under bradgwated and and then there's one must if one has an immaturity of ahh.
- 9:56I grew out of it. I forgot it. I got into science.
- 10:00I also product something else what I forgot to resign from the party officially,
- 10:07a man named Sir Give the Mincop threatens move with exposure. I am
- 10:11either to turn over the secret of Exel seven to him, meaning to rush
- 10:15up, or or the explored as a member of the English Communist Party.
- 10:20And is there any choice, my dear chap. Of course there's no choice.
- 10:24I told the link after Dows. He liked that I was going to
- 10:26the FBI, and he's tried to kill me three times from the last forty
- 10:31eight hours. I see, now there's there's where you come in. I
- 10:35want to go to Washington. Exel seven must be delpe with on the highest
- 10:39level your jobs to see that I get to Washington alive. Nobody knows we
- 10:43met tonight. Get two tickets on a plane to Washington tomorrow afternoon. I
- 10:48shall call you in the morning from a pree station somewhere. And now for
- 10:52hive and six, giving a cigarette is catholic? Yeah, thanks. Isn't
- 10:58there somewhere we can do this without ruining your career? EXO seven is more
- 11:03important than a career, man or anybody else's have your match. I had
- 11:09a lighter somewhere. Yes, the surges, thanks Howard. How I got
- 11:16end put out that night. It's just the first finger was exposed to EXO
- 11:24seven and an experiment I shall had that amputated. The weapon is capable of
- 11:33that. I'm be a fellow, That's what I'm telling you. EXO seven
- 11:37ex Eton bomb as obsolete as a sailing ship. That's why oh I got
- 11:46from somewhere in the darkness of the park. A bullet brought instant death to
- 11:52one of the most brilliant minds of our generation. How it caught himself forward
- 11:58to the pavement. I took his right hand in mind and felt the tiny,
- 12:05hard widdered four finger finger, not of a man, but of a
- 12:11baby. My first impulse was to call the police. Then I thought better.
- 12:18Nothing could bring back the life, and there was too much at stake
- 12:22to risk publicity. I left my friend unattended in death and hurried home to
- 12:28my apartment. This is mister motto calling Intelligence two and I want private line
- 12:45eight two, five or four piece. Thank you Hello Captain eight. I
- 12:50had some model. Why are Washington and get me everything on a man named
- 12:54Sergey Venenko? Like also do a factult team check on a Jack George Bradley
- 13:00who worked at the Manhattan Atomic Research Fundition correct. I will be in your
- 13:05office tomorrow morning at nine thirty. I would like this information to be there
- 13:09too. Thank you setting me truly the security of the state. Let's in
- 13:18the heart have it sissing the Dartie and Valinkov was airmail from Washington last night,
- 13:24mister mor Thank you. Captain George Bradley's file is negative. He was
- 13:28registered in finger pretty when he started working with Professor Carpton. He's thirty eight
- 13:33PC and physics, author of several papers on a treatment of cancer by radium
- 13:37and X rays. He's a death eight one nineties seventy five three. I
- 13:41imagine he would be at home on Sunday morning. Don't you want us to
- 13:45bring him in? No? No, Captain Yates. The window of a
- 13:48man s is clariss in his own house. I will go to him.
- 13:52Okay, have it's your own way. Anything else for me to do?
- 13:56Yeah, maybe after I have a Sunday morning chat with doctor Bradley in his
- 14:03own house. Yes, are you are, doctor Bradley? I am mister
- 14:15Moto. Mister I a moto Central Intelligence. They have a moment of your
- 14:20time and certainly come in. Thank you so much, said nah, I'm
- 14:24more John, you are most kind ah crossword buckle in the times, A
- 14:31soul so stimulating, bad time for at your brain. Sometimes mine isn't naturally
- 14:39enough. I've given up on this one. I am glad to see that
- 14:41you are neither rare like Jay nor common like Son. I shall touch you.
- 14:48I believe you work with Professor Howard Carlton. I do you know that
- 14:52he is a communist? What is well? You're a joke. I don't
- 14:58know. I don't believe it. This believe the truth will not make it
- 15:01any less true. Doctor Blatty I believe you have invented a weapon called EXO
- 15:07seven. Do you mean he told you? Why? Is he out of
- 15:13his mind? Idea? That's a bladley I am working for US intelligence.
- 15:16Seven is absolutely bit hard thickly. I know that. Then? Why asked
- 15:18me? This is a weapon simply the most deadly weapon man has ever found?
- 15:24And I hate it? Indeed? Why because I hate war? I?
- 15:26Yes, quite so? Tell me have you ever heard a man named
- 15:31Sergeylenko? No? Why he was flatmailing Professor Calton? Why he is blackmailing
- 15:39Professor Calton? If you either meet or get a letter from a man of
- 15:43this name, you will get in touch with me at what certainly the Lenko
- 15:46remember it? Yes, I will thank you so much for seeing well.
- 15:50I'm afraid it hasn't been a much use, but you're welcome. Sometimes one
- 15:56allows oneself to do things purely because they are good morning doc about it?
- 16:03The let god, the leg god didn't come down now he's gone, Yes,
- 16:08and downstairs. Most of the conversation I could hear, and it reassures
- 16:15me. I never met a communist yet who didn't have a blind spot.
- 16:18That little man is as dangerous as a kake a night or glistening. But
- 16:21George think, yeah, I'm sure you know it's Carlton is dead? He
- 16:26said, was blackmailing Professor Carton? He said, was not? Is he
- 16:29used the past ten? You're sure Carton wasn't alone when you shot him?
- 16:32I paused. Then Motor was with him to see was an impossibility. It
- 16:36was only since comstomly to figure if I could shoot at all, we shouldn't
- 16:40have killed him. But Georgie, he with his own work, told me,
- 16:41would report all little blackmails will be a FBI could have done something,
- 16:45locked him up. Let's yes, the plants for Resto seven are already on
- 16:48microfilm. Yeah, and have the operation. Now this surgeon. Can you
- 16:52trust him? He's high in the privacy that no recommendation, So are you,
- 16:57Georgie. I will not allow you to so, George, are told
- 17:00you know why I'm doing this. Join us to try to stop a war.
- 17:06Whether I'm right or wrong. You'll do things my way or not at
- 17:07all. Of course, your gee, there is no need for the temper
- 17:11of the angle. Get your surgeon to come to the house tonight if you
- 17:14can. Unless you get out of America. In forty eight, hours,
- 17:17you won't get out at all. What's this operation involved? It is of
- 17:19the most simplicity. The micro fun plans are pleased in the several plastic capsule
- 17:26inside my body. The capsule is secreted. There is no danger, but
- 17:29there is also none of the ridiculous disaccustoms. One cannot, after all,
- 17:33declare an appendicitis. When will you be able to travel in four days?
- 17:37Two days? No? Look, the link of the American eagle may not
- 17:41be as bad tempered as the Russian there, but if you ruffle it steads
- 17:44once too off and he'll claw your guts out and throw them in your face.
- 17:47The eagles mad now, so don't take any chances. It's got to
- 17:52be two days. Today is Sunday. Now on Tuesday night you'll take off
- 17:55the real once and real you can make your own plans for getting to Paris
- 17:57and then to eat. For it will be I will feeling the pain from
- 18:00the walking, will just be a big brave communist, and you will manage.
- 18:06I'm going to give New York a little demonstration of Expo seven a couple
- 18:08of hours after you take off. You'll kill a few thousand people, but
- 18:14the rest will stop and think now, get that purgeon over here to open
- 18:15up your flat belly. Sometimes I wonder, Georgie, if we are playing.
- 18:19Don't wonder anymore? When not? Please, no hard word coming e
- 18:23the chat ship I made it myself with. Why come in Tomoto? I
- 18:33didn't expect you back this morning. I have just been to talk to Bradley's
- 18:37housecatting it did and the link of a lot. Yeah, I just says
- 18:40to your less thank you. Alexisterday Linco born eighteen ninety nine, Magnicocurt Crusher,
- 18:49f Russians married Gypsian. What actor I should have known, Captain Jake.
- 18:59I want three men to God Badley's house on Street twenty four hour the
- 19:02day beginning this moment, mind telling me why. Let's say it is a
- 19:04suspicion of the audient of mine that you were born brought up in San Francisco.
- 19:08You're as American as I am. But don't try being Eastern mysterious.
- 19:11Not with me. The bloodness of the oak is more to be admired than
- 19:17the sharpness of the sickle. Meaning I'm down. No, no, my
- 19:19friend, not at all. I want God and Bradley's house for two reasons.
- 19:25One I think he knows Carlton is dead. I made a remark to
- 19:30the effect that Carlton was being blackmailed. Bradley picked me up on the tent
- 19:36is being blackmailed, he said, since the Carlton murder has been kept absolutely
- 19:41secret, how would doctor Bradley know. Let's sex? What's the other eable
- 19:47schutty? Again? Please? Cabbage soup? Cabbage soup. When cabbage soup
- 19:52is made with for turn, it becomes shut. It is practically a national
- 19:59dish where that Lenkoff was born. Magneto Gosk is famous for it, like
- 20:03a circu for hop dog. I smell chutchy in doctor Bradley's house. I
- 20:08suspect that Sergea Lenkoff will be arriving soon for luncheon. And if he does,
- 20:15I rest him on what are the suspicion of murder? Anything else?
- 20:18Detain anyone entering or leaving the Bradley house. Bring them down here for question,
- 20:22including Bradley. No, no, let him go, and come as
- 20:26he pleases. Right that all, you will be so kind Captain Gates as
- 20:30to report to me at my apartment tomorrow at noon. Come in, yet
- 20:37the door is unlocked. Well here, I am right on the dot and
- 20:45noon sunctuality, Captain is the virtue of the stung. Now what about this
- 20:51surgeon, Well, he went to Bradley's hearts last night. He was in
- 20:53the almost two hours. We picked him up when he left. He seems
- 20:57to be on the level. Bradley has migraine headache. Indeed, the funny
- 21:02thing is the surgeon guy wants to go to jail. Why I don't know.
- 21:07At first he refused to come down for questioning. My man got a
- 21:10little insistent. The surgeon took a swing at him, so we booked an
- 21:14off for assault and resisting a police officer in the line of duty. He
- 21:17doesn't want bail, he says. He arranged for bail Wednesday morning. Wednesday
- 21:21morning, Yeah, I wonder why search me, Captain date a man who
- 21:27will not fight injustice. He's hiding gookes could be badly. Went out this
- 21:33morning at eight o'clock, came back in the quarter of eleven carrying a large
- 21:37fact. You did not lift him, he said, not to. You
- 21:40were right. Now, I must do some stinking. I would almost trade
- 21:45the honor of my ancestors to know what he's going on in Bladley's house at
- 21:52this moment, John, when he was stub working on that see shot a
- 22:00blank on. Sometimes I think you have the insanity, think what you're like.
- 22:04But why don't they know about the count murder at the foundation? You
- 22:07go down this morning, you bring home this, this, this machine of
- 22:11hell, and no one says, say is nothing. I invented it?
- 22:15Remember there, read plug it in and switch it up. When you stop.
- 22:23I have the agony, say will never heal enough of travel Tomorrow night
- 22:29they want the seven steachers. I tell you why, you will be all
- 22:32right? Nor crazy? Crazy? No, no, I'm not. We'll
- 22:37kill several thousand people with this machine tomorrow night, but I'm not crazy.
- 22:41I'll be shot. I like that you did, maybe even link. But
- 22:44I'll teach the world a lesson. It will it will never forget anyway.
- 22:47You don't need to worry. You'll be on a plane halfway to reel.
- 22:52Who is it? Hey, let me in quick. This case is crazy
- 23:00crazy. The linkoff came out of Bradley's hoss an hour ago. He must
- 23:04have been there all the time. I followed him to Laguardi, nabbed him
- 23:07on the Air France reservation, dead he pulled a gun on me, and
- 23:11I thought him, he's thinking me sick thinking of him. My sister done
- 23:15near Wood. He had some sort of operation. We got an ambulance,
- 23:19came back to town of the East River Drive. When we passed seventy fifth
- 23:22three where Bradley's hosses the linkoff went nuts, started babbling about a machine.
- 23:26EXO something go on, go on? Ali died right why in the ambulance.
- 23:33He died of fighting. I'm a food I am an idiot, son
- 23:37of a something. You will rid me at once to buy this house.
- 23:40Listen, mister more no, no, I do will listen. EXO seven
- 23:42a day weapon, the deadliest weapon man has a unknown it's the name of
- 23:47ten thousand heavens. Don't stand there gaping at me. We haven't a moment
- 23:48to lose. This must go. I will go in alone to Bradley's house.
- 23:56You, in the meantime, will follow certain directions to the letter.
- 24:03Am I to understand with the motor that you have deliberately walked into the mouth
- 24:07of the dragon. Yes? Why, because I know what you are going
- 24:11to do. Don't move. Exo seven is rather flexible. It can be
- 24:18made as directional as a searchlight. The messon beam is pointed straight at your
- 24:22body. All I have to do is flick this switch, and to get
- 24:26out of the way you would have to move with the speed of light.
- 24:30I have no intention of moving, Doctor Pradick, you mystify me. Mister
- 24:34Morton, you ring my door bell? An announced with that inscrutable oriental calm
- 24:40that you want to watch the test. How did you know there was to
- 24:44be a test. If you don't keep your hands on your knees where I
- 24:47can see them, I'll kill you. You don't seem to understand what this
- 24:51is. This is EXO seven, small portable simple. This is the filament.
- 24:57Radium heavy hydrogen in the cathode is in this tube here and then BEEP
- 25:03is very weak, but it can split the hydrogen atom. Why do you
- 25:08keep looking at your watch? Are the police waiting outside? Do you think
- 25:12they can rush in with guns and stop me? I realize now that they
- 25:17cannot, and relax. But keep your hands on your knees. The multiple
- 25:22tube is now pointing straight down through missus Henley's apartment. It takes a moment
- 25:29to warm up exactly in my head, exactly in the name of heaven,
- 25:37mister Moto on a human beings prayed with my invisible methon beam. The water
- 25:42and the body is broken up a proton and the hydrogen atom is shot three
- 25:47of its nucleus. The water on the body becomes arcrogen and hydrogen atom.
- 25:51You evaporate, you shrivel, you dry up. You become a shriveled,
- 25:55hard, dry, little calcium doll about three feet long. Hey, this
- 26:00way the dream of inventors for centuries. I will give it to America.
- 26:04The linkop has taken it to Russia tonight as a lesson, I shall exterminate
- 26:10a few thousand people, everyone within the radius of a mile, to be
- 26:14precise, and break them steals and no protection. Twenty feet of lead is
- 26:18the only thing that will stop it. Poor missus Hanley, Honey, she
- 26:25sleeps directly under where I am standing. She was a rather nice woman.
- 26:30Fatty, I am one needs to be brought home to us. Here for
- 26:34a few thousand die I have, millions will be saved. I think Russia
- 26:38will be afraid to start anything too sure was hot. Now I'm going to
- 26:45start moving it slowly from side to side. You'd better stand over that corner.
- 26:52The light the PA. Somebody turn up the PA. I must let
- 27:00you keep quite quite still, doctor Bradley. Well, mis Simoto had wrapped
- 27:06it up. Bradley will be tried for the murder of missus Hanley Andyll five.
- 27:11Just the same, Captain Lake. He had quite an idea, an
- 27:15idea you frustrated by obeying my instructions to have the Power Company cut off elect
- 27:21service to all of east side Manhattan. Bradley was nut no Captain Lake.
- 27:29He had an ideal, what perhaps but of some merit, And he really
- 27:36didn't give the secret of EXO seven to Russia thanks to us getting the link.
- 27:40No, Bradley couldn't really be a traitor who only wanted us to believe
- 27:47Russia had it, hoping our fear would make us more careful. I examined
- 27:52the micro film which the colon removed from the link of Fundy, which was
- 27:59l post. It was completely useful. You have just heard the world's greatest
- 28:07international detective philosopher fer mister I A Moto in a force called x O seven.
- 28:15James Monks started as mister Moto. The script was written and directed by
- 28:18Harry W. Junkan others in the cast where Peter Tapell, John Larkin,
- 28:23Gavin Gordon and Scott Tennyson. The music was transcribe. This is Fred Collins
- 28:27speaking, and here was the preview of next week's story. Is mister Moto,
- 28:33you see has written he who denounces fame has no sorrow. Next week
- 28:42a story that proves the words of the Sage, A story of fame and
- 28:49tragedy concerning a flight from Istanbul. And now may I wish you a good
- 28:57night, blessed with super conserate welcome back. A kind of odd episode.
- 29:12I have to admit that when I first listened to this, I was very
- 29:17uncertain about playing mister Moto on the show because it's borderline, you know,
- 29:22in terms of mystery detective value, and then you have such an odd first
- 29:27case with it, you know, almost a science fiction flair. But it
- 29:32definitely gives you some insight into some of the real concerns that people faced.
- 29:42You know, they were worried about all of these new weapons, all of
- 29:48these amazing ways we had invented to kill each other over the years, and
- 29:53what the future might hold. In some ways, this characterization and really reminded
- 30:00me a little bit more of Charlie Chan than it did of Peter Laurey's Mister
- 30:06Moto. But despite the philosophical element, some of the later episodes don't quite
- 30:11have the don't quite have the same sort of treatment. It becomes a little
- 30:21more subdued as the episodes go on. So I hope you enjoyed today's episode
- 30:26of Mister Moto. We'll be back with another one next week. And now
- 30:29we have some listener comments and feedback. Randa comments that this is her first
- 30:36time with our radio station listening and hope you enjoyed it. And I guess
