- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop, and
- 0:23let's start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. So today we are talking about
- 0:32cognitive overload. Sounds so impressive, doesn't
- 0:35it? Well, it's really what happens
- 0:37when your brain is processing more information than it can
- 0:40effectively handle. It's like it's all coming in at
- 0:42once. It leads to, you know,
- 0:44overwhelm, confusion. They're all driving the bus.
- 0:47And the most important thing that happens is it decreases
- 0:50your performance. Think of it like if you thought
- 0:53of it like a computer, you could think of it like you have too
- 0:55many tabs open. It's what happens when I share a
- 0:58screen, my assistant and she goes, Oh my gosh, why do you
- 1:02have so many tabs open? You need to close them down.
- 1:05Or when I called Apple and said, hey, I had to call Apple Care
- 1:09because my computer was acting wonky and they shared my screen
- 1:13with me and they said, jeez, you have a lot of tabs open here.
- 1:16And this is what it does. It slows everything down.
- 1:19Nothing runs efficiently when this happens, but we don't think
- 1:22of it that way because we can do it.
- 1:24And this is where it it becomes a little wonky for us because
- 1:27just because you can do something doesn't mean you
- 1:29should do something. And I can have hope in 57 tabs,
- 1:34sure, but should I know what's the optimal number?
- 1:38So this comes back to cognitive overload and what happens when
- 1:43we're bombarded with too many thoughts, mind chatter,
- 1:45decisions, distractions, distractions, distractions,
- 1:49distractions. They're always happening around
- 1:52us, whether it's our phone dinging, someone walking in our
- 1:54office, someone asking you a question, emails coming in.
- 1:59It remains very hard in today's world to be focused.
- 2:03Unless you decide you're going to make a conscious effort to
- 2:08say I'm reducing my cognitive overload, I'm going to shut this
- 2:12down. Now, why do I want you to think
- 2:14of it in terms of cognitive overload?
- 2:16Because it's nothing that we have an association to it.
- 2:20It's it's when we have a, a meaning, when we set a meaning
- 2:23to a phrase, we will sometimes take it on.
- 2:26So multitasking, that's the exact other way to say cognitive
- 2:31overload. But for some reason, we love to
- 2:34talk about how we can multitask oh so well, when the real
- 2:37reality is we don't. It decreases performance.
- 2:41It means you're giving something not your full effort, not your
- 2:44full intention with it because you're being pulled in many
- 2:48directions, but because it sounds sexy.
- 2:50See, when we say, oh, I'm multitasking, we we get away
- 2:54with it. When we say cognitive overload,
- 2:57we go, wait a second. Overload doesn't sound good.
- 2:59So let me think about that for a second and we stop.
- 3:02So when you start to process this and really want to clear it
- 3:07out, you can recognize that this is not healthy.
- 3:11This is not a healthy pattern. And if you want to get to where
- 3:15you want to go, especially at the end of the month, we're
- 3:17coming up to the end of January. This is one of those times where
- 3:22the pressure starts to come on. We're almost 30 days through the
- 3:25month and guess what? Oh my gosh, I didn't get done
- 3:28what I thought I was going to do.
- 3:29I have to hurry up. I have to do this, I have to do
- 3:31this, I have to do this. The list becomes longer and
- 3:33longer, the pressure becomes longer and and on top of that,
- 3:37you still all those distractions and other things that are
- 3:40attempting to come in and wipe you out.
- 3:43So the bombardment of all of it is where you have to say, hold
- 3:48on, this is cognitive overload and I cannot operate well
- 3:53effectively in that state. So forget about making it sound
- 3:57sexy with I can multitask. Can you?
- 4:00Yes should you No, no, no and no.
- 4:04So how do you handle this? Well, first of all, you know, we
- 4:07can always go back to say, OK, how did we get here?
- 4:11If you want to debrief what's causing it, But we all know
- 4:14what's causing it. It's everyday life.
- 4:15It's all those little things. So if you can pull down, close
- 4:20some of those tabs and say I'm going to focus on one thing at a
- 4:23time. I'm going to choose to have one
- 4:27thing at a time be done. It's going to make you perform
- 4:32better. It's going to help you choose
- 4:35better drivers for your emotions and your bus.
- 4:37It's going to make you be more productive when you do one thing
- 4:42at a time. But unless you can recognize
- 4:45that this is happening, and part of the reason why we're talking
- 4:48about this is because I am, I experienced this myself.
- 4:51At the end of every month, I'm looking at all the stuff that I
- 4:54wanted to get done. And with all the weather that
- 4:57we've had here, I haven't been able to get stuff done on the
- 5:00farm that I wanted to in time so that I can get a jump start on
- 5:04the growing season. So what happens?
- 5:06I'm my brain is running like crazy and all of the thoughts,
- 5:11I've got to get this. I've got to make a decision on
- 5:13where I'm going to do this watering system.
- 5:15I need to do that. And it all takes over.
- 5:17And granted, this is all about helping us to thrive, helping
- 5:21all of you to thrive when I do all these thoughts.
- 5:24But guess what? It's not effective and I'm not
- 5:27getting where I want to go. And I'm experiencing exactly
- 5:30what I'm talking to you about. So shutting down cognitive
- 5:33overload, that's our focus today.
- 5:37Really focus your attention on one thing at a time and choose
- 5:40to not allow all those thoughts, decisions, distractions, the
- 5:44mental chatter, everyone talking on the bus to take over and make
- 5:47that focused choice. Be a really good time to say,
- 5:52okay, what's my one thing I want to get done today and what's the
- 5:56best emotion and driver I need for that?
- 5:59Or the even if it's not the whole day, it's just this next
- 6:02hour, this next 15 minutes, however you want to break it
- 6:05down, jump into it. All right, my friends, I hope
- 6:08you have a fantastic day and a blessed day and I will see you
- 6:11tomorrow. Bye.
