- 0:00Speaker 1: Before we get to a hearing from Sark.
- 0:03Speaker 2: On our text line, our man CB said, you brought
- 0:07Speaker 2: up how many games Texas could potentially play this season
- 0:10Speaker 2: if they make a run in the College Football Playoff. Well,
- 0:14Speaker 2: Sark in ninety six with BYU was the quarterback when
- 0:17Speaker 2: BYU played fifteen games, the first team ever to do
- 0:22Speaker 2: so on the first team to ever win fourteen games
- 0:24Speaker 2: in the season Division one FBS. Yes, CB is right
- 0:29Speaker 2: the things to remember about that, and Sark has talked
- 0:32Speaker 2: about this before. But I'm glad you brought it up, CB,
- 0:35Speaker 2: because I'll probably bring it up next week when we
- 0:38Speaker 2: do a show that that year, BYU was still in
- 0:44Speaker 2: the Western Athletic Conference, I believe, and it was the
- 0:49Speaker 2: first year that TCU and I guess SMU were in
- 0:53Speaker 2: the whack because the Southwest Conference had ended after the
- 0:56Speaker 2: prior season, and it was the first year of the
- 0:58Speaker 2: Big Twelve and neither of the schools were in the
- 0:59Speaker 2: Big twel and so they had to play them as
- 1:02Speaker 2: conference opponents. But also they played Hawaii, and the NCAAA
- 1:08Speaker 2: rule goes that if you play Hawaii, if you go
- 1:10Speaker 2: out to Hawaii and play Hawaii, that's a non exempt game. Yeah,
- 1:15Speaker 2: it counts on your record, counts on all that kind
- 1:17Speaker 2: of stuff. Conference game, all that business, but it doesn't
- 1:20Speaker 2: count back then against the eleven regular season games. So
- 1:26Speaker 2: they played twelve regular season games. Then they had a
- 1:29Speaker 2: conference championship game which they had to go over time
- 1:31Speaker 2: to be Wyoming.
- 1:33Speaker 1: They gave them thirteen. Actually they had twelve.
- 1:36Speaker 2: They played in the Kickoff Classic game too, that was
- 1:38Speaker 2: what it was, plus Hawaii, so that gave them thirteen.
- 1:44Speaker 2: After the conference after the regular season, they played in
- 1:47Speaker 2: the conference championship game against Wyoming that was fourteen, won that,
- 1:51Speaker 2: and then went to the Cotton Bowl and beat Kansas
- 1:53Speaker 2: State nineteen to fifteen, fifteen games, the first school to
- 1:57Speaker 2: play that and start making reference the other day to
- 2:02Speaker 2: the fact that his team could play upwards of sixteen,
- 2:06Speaker 2: maybe even seventeen games if if it worked out they
- 2:11Speaker 2: wait with the playoff. I have maintained from the start
- 2:16Speaker 2: that you could play seventeen games if you're in your
- 2:25Speaker 2: conference championship. So if you're in your conference championship, if
- 2:30Speaker 2: you win the conference championship, you're not going to play
- 2:32Speaker 2: seventeen games because you're gonna get a buye in the
- 2:35Speaker 2: first round. But you could wind up playing that many
- 2:37Speaker 2: if you get in the conference championship and then let's
- 2:41Speaker 2: say you don't get a buye, you don't win that
- 2:43Speaker 2: conference championship game, So then you're in that first round
- 2:47Speaker 2: bracketing where five will play a home game against the
- 2:50Speaker 2: twelve seed, the and the winner that would play the
- 2:57Speaker 2: number four seed, which gets a buy Also on that
- 3:00Speaker 2: side of the bracket, the eight seed plays the nine seed,
- 3:02Speaker 2: and the winner that will draw the one seed. Then
- 3:05Speaker 2: on the other side of the bracket, the sixth seed
- 3:08Speaker 2: will play the eleven seed, and the winner that will
- 3:11Speaker 2: get it would play the three seed in the quarterfinals,
- 3:15Speaker 2: and the seventh seed would play the ten seed, with
- 3:17Speaker 2: the winner to play the two seed in the quarterfinals.
- 3:20Speaker 2: That's how that would work, So you could play four
- 3:22Speaker 2: more games out of that, so that would be seventeen.
- 3:25Speaker 2: If you're playing twelve in the regular season and in
- 3:27Speaker 2: the conference championship, but lose the conference championship, that's how
- 3:32Speaker 2: you'd get the seventeen. So that's about the only way.
- 3:36Speaker 2: That's the only route really you can get the seventeen.
- 3:38Speaker 2: You'd have to play in your conference championship, lose the
- 3:41Speaker 2: conference championship, and then get into the field and have
- 3:46Speaker 2: to play a first round game and wind up playing
- 3:47Speaker 2: four full games. That's how you would get the seventeen
- 3:50Speaker 2: long schedule. Yeah, it would definitely be all of that
- 3:54Speaker 2: if that were the case. And again on this webinar today,
- 3:58Speaker 2: there were some interesting things that came out and we'll
- 4:00Speaker 2: talk about it a little later on what Richard Clark
- 4:02Speaker 2: said about that. Let's hear from long Orange head coach
- 4:05Speaker 2: Steve Sarkisian from the SEC teleconference. Here's the opening comments from.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Sorry, head into our second bye of the season, eight
- 4:15Speaker 3: games in, and you know, I thought, I thought it
- 4:19Speaker 3: was good to get a win on the road against
- 4:21Speaker 3: a really good Vanderbilt team last week and the that
- 4:24Speaker 3: that team is tough and they play hard and Clark's
- 4:26Speaker 3: done a great job, so to get out of there
- 4:29Speaker 3: with a win, and to take this week to hopefully
- 4:32Speaker 3: get a few of our guys back healthy as we
- 4:35Speaker 3: head into the final four games of the regular season
- 4:37Speaker 3: here coming up, all going to be very difficult games.
- 4:39Speaker 3: I think this buy is coming out a good time
- 4:41Speaker 3: for us, and you know, we're looking forward to getting
- 4:45Speaker 3: back at it again next week and as we get
- 4:47Speaker 3: ready for Florida.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Now here's something you can always take to the bank.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Whenever Start does any kind of press conference other than
- 4:57Speaker 2: maybe postgame, and I'll explain in a minute, other than
- 5:04Speaker 2: maybe a postgame press conference, if you're talking about like
- 5:07Speaker 2: say a Monday press conference, if you are talking about
- 5:12Speaker 2: a deal like this, the SEC teleconference, if you're talking
- 5:15Speaker 2: about his Thursday media briefing. In almost every instance, you
- 5:21Speaker 2: can expect him to get a question from somebody about recruiting,
- 5:26Speaker 2: especially if they have a home game coming up. And
- 5:29Speaker 2: the Long Warns do have a home game coming They
- 5:30Speaker 2: have two home games remaining against Florida a week from
- 5:34Speaker 2: Saturday and then Kentucky on the twenty third. So a
- 5:39Speaker 2: lot of these questions come from the reporters from the
- 5:42Speaker 2: various fan sites, be it Orange Bloods or two four
- 5:47Speaker 2: seven or you know, Inside Texas, whatever it might be,
- 5:50Speaker 2: on three, whatever it might be.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Invariably, what will happen is a.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Reporter from one of those sites will ask about recruiting,
- 5:57Speaker 2: because that's a lot of what the con ten is
- 6:00Speaker 2: driven on several of these sites. They might not, you know, postgame,
- 6:04Speaker 2: unless it was like a home game where they say, hey,
- 6:07Speaker 2: do you have some recruits in you know, how did
- 6:08Speaker 2: they did they like it? YadA YadA, that sort of thing.
- 6:11Speaker 2: When you got a home game, man, there will be
- 6:13Speaker 2: a question about it, So checking in if you had
- 6:16Speaker 2: it on your being go card.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yes. Uh.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Sark was asked if there is a sense of urgency
- 6:24Speaker 2: with only two home games remaining to get as many
- 6:27Speaker 2: recruits on campus as possible, to give them the full
- 6:33Speaker 2: exposure to everything.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Well, I think, you know, recruiting is always at the
- 6:36Speaker 3: forefront of a lot of what we do, and we've
- 6:40Speaker 3: been fortunate to get a lot of players, a lot
- 6:42Speaker 3: of kids to games. I had a great turnout for
- 6:44Speaker 3: the Georgia game. You know, we'll we'll continue to stress
- 6:48Speaker 3: and to push of you know, getting players to uh
- 6:52Speaker 3: for our final two home games. Well, it should be
- 6:53Speaker 3: great games, great environments, so that that really doesn't change,
- 6:59Speaker 3: you know, as far as players come to game. I think,
- 7:01Speaker 3: you know, for the most part, all the guys we're
- 7:03Speaker 3: recruiting have at least been to one game here this
- 7:05Speaker 3: season and gotten the sense and a feel for the
- 7:07Speaker 3: environment at dk R, and so we feel comfortable with that.
- 7:11Speaker 1: You know, we try to take advantage of our of
- 7:13Speaker 1: our by.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Weeks and days that we have like this week to
- 7:16Speaker 3: to get on the road and get to schools and
- 7:18Speaker 3: see people play, and then and then you and then
- 7:22Speaker 3: you you know, you start the process of of you know,
- 7:25Speaker 3: getting guys to try to finish at signing date. You know,
- 7:28Speaker 3: last year, you know, we made the conference championship game
- 7:32Speaker 3: and it was still open to recruit, and so at
- 7:35Speaker 3: that point, you know, what's the sacrifices that you make?
- 7:38Speaker 3: You know, I think you know, recruits like to join
- 7:41Speaker 3: really good teams and and and be part of teams
- 7:43Speaker 3: that are competitive and and tough, and they want to
- 7:46Speaker 3: play with the best. They want to compete with the
- 7:47Speaker 3: best on a daily basis. And so sometimes the best
- 7:50Speaker 3: recruiting tool we have is being a successful football team
- 7:54Speaker 3: to go along with the environment here at dk R,
- 7:56Speaker 3: to go along with the education and the city of Austin,
- 7:59Speaker 3: all the things that we have. And so, you know,
- 8:03Speaker 3: you can't do everything all the time, because if you're
- 8:06Speaker 3: trying to do everything, you're probably not good at anything.
- 8:08Speaker 3: And so, you know, the best thing we can do
- 8:10Speaker 3: is play really good football on top of when we
- 8:13Speaker 3: have our moments to recruit, do a great job at that.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of a chicken and egg thing with that,
- 8:20Speaker 2: and I've heard Sarka have to address this particular part
- 8:23Speaker 2: of it as well as Rodney Terry when Texas basketball
- 8:26Speaker 2: has been the NCAA tournament about how do you balance
- 8:29Speaker 2: like what you do with a portal when you're trying
- 8:31Speaker 2: to get a team ready to play. And I remember
- 8:33Speaker 2: Rodney said, well, we're concentrating on playing an NCAA tournament game,
- 8:36Speaker 2: but we'll, you know, we'll deal with the portal. We've
- 8:38Speaker 2: got people working on it. It's the same thing too.
- 8:41Speaker 2: I think most people who follow not only the Texas program,
- 8:47Speaker 2: but if they follow a major college program in Southeastern Conference,
- 8:49Speaker 2: Big ten, Big twelve, whatever, they know that the staffs
- 8:55Speaker 2: that are put together by the head coach include not
- 8:58Speaker 2: only the coaching staff members and then things like you know,
- 9:03Speaker 2: a chief of staff, a general manager, director of high
- 9:07Speaker 2: school relations, personnel director. Those are all titles and positions
- 9:14Speaker 2: that can be held in a college football program. In
- 9:18Speaker 2: addition to those positions, there are positions set aside where
- 9:23Speaker 2: there are people who work for an athletic department for
- 9:27Speaker 2: a football program or whatever whose sole job is scouring
- 9:32Speaker 2: the portal and working recruiting. And that's what sark is
- 9:37Speaker 2: kind of getting at and what Roddy Terry does with basketball.
- 9:39Speaker 2: We have people working on that reminds me of the
- 9:41Speaker 2: line at Indiana Jones. You know, we have top men
- 9:44Speaker 2: working on it. What kind of men? Top men? So
- 9:48Speaker 2: they've got people working on it is the point.
- 9:51Speaker 1: All right.
- 9:51Speaker 2: We'll hear more from Sark coming up throughout the course
- 9:54Speaker 2: of the program this afternoon from that SEC teleconference. Up
- 9:57Speaker 2: next Inconceivable on a Wednesday afternoon on sports Radio AM
- 10:01Speaker 2: thirteen hundred The Zone
