- 2:31out last night in tonight's lineup for Live on the Levee. Jimbo is going
- 2:35to explain that to us. Plus, Conac County Commissioner Ben Selango is going
- 2:38to stop by the Palmar Stage studio. We had Commissioner Slango scheduled and to
- 2:43talk about the Capital Sports Complex. We are going to touch on that,
- 2:46but some other things have developed in the world of news and we're gonna get
- 2:51Commissioner Selango's take on that. Plus, that is my pleasure, as you
- 2:54know, every Friday I welcome him a different guest host and it's a it's
- 3:00a pleasure when I have all my guest host in most of them I've enjoyed,
- 3:04and I'm kid I've enjoyed them all. But this guy is an old
- 3:06friend of mine, and he's an old radio guy too, and so it's
- 3:09not that often that I get actual radio people in as as co host.
- 3:15Probably a good thing that I don't. But this is the semi world famous,
- 3:19semi legendary Shockley. How are you, sir? In honor and a
- 3:23privilege, my friend to be back on the five eighty am airwaves. This
- 3:27is the first time I've been on this dial since I was a regular caller
- 3:30to the old Jack Kane Show back in nineteen forty seven. I think was
- 3:35um. I think we followed Fiber McGhee a Molly and then we were on
- 3:38right before the Shadow. I just have to weigh in here because Jack Kane
- 3:43Show was the very first gig that I had in radio. I produced that
- 3:46show for Jack back in the early nineties or whatever it was. That.
- 3:51Yeah, that was my first gig. So I may have screened your call
- 3:53at some You may have hit the dump button on Shockley a couple of times.
- 3:58He made a mistake of letting me all right, But Shockley's gonna be
- 4:01my guest host. Today we're gonna get into talking to what Shockley has been
- 4:05up to since he graced the airwaves here in Charles. Not as a I
- 4:10mean, yeah, he was a caller to the old Jack Kane Show,
- 4:12but he actually was on the air at some other companies here and Charles.
- 4:15We're gonna talk about that a little bit later on. Plus we'll do ten
- 4:17questions too. That's always a highlight when we have a Friday guest us.
- 4:19All right, So let me explain to you the way live radio works.
- 4:23All right, So remember every Friday we have a good friend Hannah Gardner from
- 4:27the Canal Charleston, Maine Association with our Adopt Me Please pett of the Week.
- 4:30Now. A couple of weeks ago we had Hannah on and just at
- 4:36the outset, Hannah had to leave us because her dogs got out. Hannah.
- 4:42Anybody who thinks this show is not one hundred percent live Hannah is.
- 4:46Hannah actually doesn't go into a little bit later on in the day at the
- 4:47shelter. So even though you hear dogs barking in the background with Hannah's on,
- 4:51Hannah's not actually at that time, She's not actually at the shelters.
- 4:57She's actually at her house, all right. So the way this works is
- 5:00that particular day we just had to kind of wing it because Hannah she's chasing
- 5:03her dogs. She got her dogs back, which is good, all right.
- 5:06So on Thursdays, Thursday evening usually, Hannah texts me a picture of
- 5:11the dog with the description. I put it up on Dave amand radio and
- 5:14Facebook and at Dave A seventy on Twitter. I share it with whomever my
- 5:17co host is going to be the next day, send it to you early
- 5:19this morning, all right. So just I mean, I literally walk into
- 5:24the Palmar Store studios here Shockley ready to go on the air, and I
- 5:28get a text from Hannah that says, my cat got out. So I
- 5:32don't know if I'm going to be able to call or not. So that's
- 5:39kind of where we are right now. Luckily, we have the information on
- 5:43our dog that we're going to try to get adopted. Hannah may or may
- 5:46not be with us between now and nine to twenty. I don't know.
- 5:49If she gets her cat under control, then Hannah will be with us.
- 5:55But as of right now, Hannah is out chasing her cat, trying to
- 5:59get her cat back in. Hannah needs to probably look into some better fencing
- 6:02around her home place where everybody. I don't know where she lives, but
- 6:05wherever so or maybe she needs to switch from the regular cat food to the
- 6:11tunas, so then you know the cat will stick around and best. Well
- 6:15I think that, yah, I don't know, so we may have Hannah
- 6:18anyway. Let's talk about our adotmi Plice pet of the week again. This
- 6:20is why we have the animal already posted. Dog's name is Kirby Exackley,
- 6:27one year old and he is may is male U already fixed U social butterfly.
- 6:32Hannah tells me very sweet dog loves other dogs and kids. Would make
- 6:39a great pet for somebody's shock. Yes, sir. I'm also told that
- 6:43he likes to drink beer and chase trucks, so that's not entirely true,
- 6:48but well maybe it is. I don't know. I don't know what kind
- 6:53of dog. I mean, I'm not good at picking out what kind of
- 6:56dogs that dogs are. Looks handsome, he looks like somebody kind of Easton
- 7:01slack, and he would only debate biting you, but not bit you,
- 7:04now, I don't think so he's not. He's not gonna bite you this
- 7:06is. This is a beautiful dog though. Um. And so if you
- 7:10are looking for a pet, if you're looking for a dog that from one
- 7:13Hannah tells me would be great to go out on walks in the park whatever.
- 7:16This would be a great looking dog for you. The dog's name is
- 7:19Kirby uh and uh. And the important and one of the important things is
- 7:24they say that he really really loves kids and he loves other dogs. Um.
- 7:28And that's kind of important. And one of the things that I learned
- 7:30from Hannah that I didn't know shockly that they do up at the at the
- 7:33shelter is they kind of have a little meat and great So if you're going
- 7:39to adopt an animal up there and you have, you know, a dog
- 7:43or a cat already at home, they will make arrangements for you to be
- 7:46able to visit with your dog up there and say, Okay, Larry meat
- 7:51Sam or whatever. And that's that's kind of an important thing. Yeah.
- 7:55And the Clear Flat this facility is down near a Coonskin park, entered through
- 8:00whatever. Yeah. Yeah, it's the airport. Yeah. And they do
- 8:01so many great things with the GNAWN Charles Humane Association up there. And again
- 8:05we started doing this segment a year and a half ago or so with Hannah,
- 8:09and we have a pretty good adoption rate of getting our our dogs adopted.
- 8:13And one, um, okay, we may have Coop tells me we
- 8:16may have Hannah on the phone here handa, so we might have Hannah here.
- 8:22So we'll just kind of we'll kind of hang out to see if we
- 8:24have Hannah on the phone. I'll remind you while we do that for the
- 8:26phone cost to five eighty Live service of Bigley Piggley Wiggily. When shopping at
- 8:30your Bigley Piggley Wiggily, be sure to join their loyalty program. You can
- 8:33say Bigger the gas pumps and throughout the store with their electronic coupons and free
- 8:35gifts on Fridays just for stopping by for firm to table Biggley Pigley Wiggily the
- 8:39best kept secret in Charleston Texting services about Fruit Pharmacy, Hometown Family Pharmacy.
- 8:45All right, we got Hannah. Now, how are you Hannah? Hanna?
- 8:48Are you there? All right? Hannah? Are you there? Okay?
- 8:54All right, you're there. Do we have control of the cat?
- 8:58Hannah? Yeah, she is inside. Have you ever considered possibly doing another
- 9:03fencing arrangement at your house. Hannah, Well, that fencing is supposed to
- 9:09be here at the very beginning of July, I thought sooner, but very
- 9:13beginning of July. All right, So what exactly you gotta give us the
- 9:18story exactly what happened? How did the cat get out this morning? What
- 9:20happened? Well, um, the face that I have now having a little
- 9:24hole where one of my dogs can get out of it, one of my
- 9:28little dogs, so she got out that like we're used to her coming back,
- 9:33so we weren't too worried. But then my cat slips out of the
- 9:35door, and I'm like, nah, hi, he's slip out of the
- 9:37door. So he slips out and he just jumps like completely clears the fence
- 9:43which is just like five feet right now, okay, so completely clear that
- 9:48and then just gets over and start going under my house. So I had
- 9:50to chili crawl under my house and get him. But I got him,
- 9:54all right, So we have we have the cat is back in the house.
- 9:58That is good news my coast. This week. I didn't get a
- 10:01chance to tell you this, Hannah, is Shockley. That's his name.
- 10:03His name as Shockley and he's an old radio guy here in Charleston. So
- 10:07Shockley mean Hannah, Hannah Meat Shockley, Hello, Anna, Hello. All
- 10:11right, So we'll get back to it. And I've already told everybody all
- 10:13about Kirby. Kirby's pictures posted on Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and at Dave
- 10:18A seventy on Twitter. We'll get back to that here in a couple of
- 10:20moments. But Hannah, you get information available on your Facebook page. You
- 10:22folks are teaming up with Bissel Abissel and their Pet Foundation for another Empty the
- 10:28Shelters event. Talk about him. Yeah, so we are having another Empty
- 10:31the Shelter event. Is not going to be until July. Okay, it
- 10:37is, it's July six to the thirty first. But that just means that
- 10:41the adoption fees are going to be well, they're sponsoring fifty dollars, and
- 10:48then that's going to be for the all of our adult dogs for sure.
- 10:52I know that because we are still pretty full. I don't think we're at
- 10:54like super max capacity, but we are still really really full and it's really
- 10:58hard expressed to take an animal. So we would love to see a bunch
- 11:01of them go home during that, So get ready to come up during that
- 11:05it's going to be assuming probably couched as well. I think they haven't decided
- 11:09yet, but I know that dogs will for sure begin it. And of
- 11:11course we want to argue to go to us at home absolutely. Now,
- 11:15you did a Friday and Saturday event I think this past week with Todd Judy
- 11:18motors. How'd that work out for you? Great? And we are at
- 11:22the Marmette Toad Judy today and tomorrow as well. Okay, all right,
- 11:26what are you in need of at the shelter right now? Because you tell
- 11:28us from time to time you need wet food, dry food, blankets.
- 11:31What's your biggest needs right now at the shelter, Hannah? Yeah, we
- 11:35for sure still need lots of blankets. And when I say blankets, I
- 11:39don't mean like super huge, big big big big, like thick comforters.
- 11:45I just mean like blankets or blankets, sheets, like even pillowcases for the
- 11:50puppies and stuff like that, because we can cut those and make them smaller,
- 11:52it's easier for us to use. Those. Buzzy blankets are always nice
- 11:56as well, for like our bigger dogs like more of a country bed and
- 12:01stuff, So we definitely need that and then we also need dog food adult
- 12:05dog food, and what we use is Purina dog chow. We could use
- 12:11a little bit of puppy chow, but mainly dog chow. Okay, all
- 12:13right, well Purina dog chow or puppy Chow's what you're looking for. A
- 12:18right, let's review. You missed my introduction on Kirby, so we'll go
- 12:20back to that as we close out. Hannah, Kirby one year old male
- 12:24newterd. You call him a social butterfly, very sweet dog. You've got
- 12:28the inside information, though, I just have the words. Tell me about
- 12:33your interactions with Kirby and what a great dog this would make for somebody.
- 12:35Yeah, he's a really really sweet boy. He does pull on the Lisa
- 12:41a little bit. So we always recommend with those kind of dogs to start
- 12:45out with a good, good strong training harness or like a no cool harness
- 12:48or something, or even a gentle leader. But he hasn't shown any like
- 12:54restraint sensitivity or resource guarding or anything like that. And when he is in
- 12:58play groups with all the other dogs in the morning times, he is very
- 13:03loose and very weakly and very friendly. He actually prefers more playful dogs,
- 13:09so if you have another dog and it's playful and you're looking for another one
- 13:13that's equally as playful, then I'm sure that Kirby would be a good one.
- 13:18He does seem to be kid friendly. But I always always always tell
- 13:22everyone you have to train your kids just as well as your dogs to know
- 13:26the boundaries between each other. You know. Yeah, but he's great.
- 13:31He's very very sweet, and he's a social butterfly, So he would be
- 13:35good for a family dog or even a person who likes to do like weekend
- 13:39adventures and stuff like that. Very good, all right, Hannah, Good
- 13:43luck and congratulations of getting your cat back. So you've lost the dog,
- 13:46but the dogs came back. Now now you get the cat back. Do
- 13:48you have any other animals beside cats and dogs that could get out of cossa?
- 13:52To Hannah, No, and let's pray that until July that no more.
- 13:56Get all right, Hannah, Let's talk to you next week. Here
- 14:01thanks a Lot nine twenty one. Again that is Hannah with our adoptmy Please

- 21:26be my guest host next week. Yew yeah it. She'll be open the
- 21:29course of the regatta of her for Jody Messina and beside you. No one
- 21:33loves my Kate Boytech more than me. I love Kate. I've known Kate
- 21:37literally since she was born. Her mother and I are the same age.
- 21:40Yeah, her mother and I grew up together. I'm certainly proud of her
- 21:42county. I know, I know LA's proud of her, but West Virginia's
- 21:45proud of her. She's making her way and she's just a joy to be
- 21:48with that. Her vibrations are just great. She's just a feel good person
- 21:52and boy can she's saying, by the way, Yeah, and she's going
- 21:55to be my guest host next week. We're gonna put her under the microscope
- 21:56for ten questions. Yeah, we'll be here with her next week too,
- 22:00ord to the regatta. But before that, we're going to get in live
- 22:02Ma Levy tonight up next right here in the hot seat, right here,
- 22:04Commissioner Ben Selango, right exactly, Ben Ben Bennet's all your thank you man.

- 22:11all right, mister Slango, gonna have you slide on over there. While
- 22:15we do that, I'll remind you the five eighty Lives brought to you a
- 22:17partment Generations Physical Therapy seve Commedia locations along I sixty four, and they're hiring
- 22:22for both license and technically trained staff. For more information to visit Generations PT
- 22:26dot com. Can I kind of Commissioner Ben Selango is well, this good
- 22:29morning, sir. How are you. It's a tough act to have to
- 22:32follow, Jim Strawn, Yes, it is. It's always tough to follow
- 22:36Jim. Indeed, it is um before we get to the Capital Sports Complex,
- 22:38Sir Um, and I would be remiss if I didn't bring this up.
- 22:41And I know it's Friday funhouse, that's what we call this on Friday,
- 22:44we uh try to have a little fun. But but I do need
- 22:47to bring this up. News surfacing late yesterday afternoon into the investigations surrounding commission
- 22:52President Kent Carper. Story posted on my website social mediaw Metronews dot com,
- 22:56WCHS Network dot com allegations at less than two hours after Commissioner Carper was accused
- 23:00of blue behavior Daniel Blue Park, he said an email to a female County
- 23:04employee asking if she had an interest to being the superintendent at a Big Ben
- 23:08golf course. Lady in question believed to be an assistant to Commissioner Lance Wheeler
- 23:12and is reported to be the girlfriend of the Charleston police officer who responded to
- 23:17the incident at the park on May fifteenth. Of course, we know Commissier
- 23:21Carper continues to recover from his health ailments. We wish him the best and
- 23:25the light of all this. Commissier s Lango, any comments from you,
- 23:29well, you know Kent's gonna speak to this eventually. I Ken was gonna
- 23:33He tried to make the meeting yesterday. His doctors wouldn't let him. Kent
- 23:36wanted to make the meeting. I spoke with him right before. I'm excited
- 23:40for him to actually get back. You know, we Kent's experience is you
- 23:45know, he's got thirty years in this just as a commissioner, and before
- 23:48that he was chief of police at Charleston. I mean, his experience on
- 23:52the commission is invaluable. You know. With regard to the email, I
- 23:56didn't know anything about the email until I actually first saw the email Wednesday afternoon,
- 24:03May seventeenth. I learned of the email Tuesday, right before a commission
- 24:07meeting when the media called me. So the media actually knew about it before
- 24:11I did. But the first time that I saw it was Wednesday afternoon.
- 24:15But here here's what I can tell you. A county commission cannot offer a
- 24:21job to someone without a full vote of the commission. So whatever the email
- 24:26is, I will tell you that it's not a It can't be a job
- 24:29offer because that has to go through a commission. You know, just last
- 24:30night, we had what seven or eight new employees, all of them have
- 24:36to come in front of the County Commission. There has to be an order,
- 24:38there has to be a vote, and so you know, that's that's
- 24:41the thing. There was no this person was not going to be hired as
- 24:47the superintendent. I can tell you that because you know, she didn't have
- 24:49the experience. I'm not even sure she's ever played golf. But you know,
- 24:52whatever happened with regard to that email, I can tell you that there
- 24:56could not be a formal job offer. Legally, there could not be a
- 24:57formal job offer because has to go through the commission. And so the Commission
- 25:02hadn't approved that. Obviously. I didn't even know about it, didn't even
- 25:03see it until two days after it happened. But so, you know,
- 25:07the the real issue is we've got to get Kent. You know, once
- 25:11his doctors clear him, he's got to get back to the Commission. I'm
- 25:15excited to him for him to be back. I've known Kent a long time,
- 25:18I mean twenty plus years. I still remember my first year being a
- 25:22lawyer, walking into Kent's office in nineteen ninety eight and meeting him. He
- 25:26probably doesn't even remember this, meeting him and his partners, by the way,
- 25:29all of them are just phenomenal people. His law partners and meeting him
- 25:33for the first time, Kent is you know, he's He's made some enemies
- 25:38over the years. He is he pushes people. He's always been, you
- 25:45know, the kind of guy that's going to push people. You know,
- 25:48some people don't like it, some people at rubs the wrong way. But
- 25:52he's always been the guy that has been the the forefront on the County Commission.
- 25:56You know, if you've got a disaster going on, you want Kent
- 26:00Carper there, when there's flooding, when there's a chemical league, when there's
- 26:03a water contamination, whatever it may be, you want Kent Carper there because
- 26:07of his experience forty years worth of public service. And you know what I
- 26:12have seen in the media reports, and obviously I have seen the email.
- 26:17I saw that Wednesday, the May seventeenth. I don't know what was going
- 26:22on with Kent. He's going to address that at some point, but I
- 26:26haven't. I haven't thought to him about it. Not one single time have
- 26:29we discussed an email, have we discussed any of the allegations. But that
- 26:33is certainly not the Kent Carper I know you know the media reports that I've
- 26:38seen, it's certainly out of character for him. So I want to wish
- 26:44Kent a speedy recovery. You know, he's still recovering obviously. You know,
- 26:47when they cut your sternom open with a saw, it takes a while
- 26:51to get you back to normal from that. So we'll get him back into
- 26:53the Commission as soon as possible. Talking with you can, I Chanic Commissioner
- 26:57Ben Selango. So, and I know you can't speak for Kent carperent As
- 27:02you said, Ken Carper, he was going to speak for himself at some
- 27:03at some point, what would be his reason for sending that email? In
- 27:07your opinion? You know what, I know they and I didn't talk to
- 27:11Kent. So May May fifteenth was my fiftieth birthday, and I takethday thanks.
- 27:18Well now I'm just fifty years and one month old. But you know
- 27:22I spoke to Kent earlier that day. He you know, he and I've
- 27:26been friends forever. But he called and wished me a happy birthday. But
- 27:30I didn't really talk to him again until that afternoon and didn't know anything about
- 27:34it. You know, when I spoke with Kent, I didn't know about
- 27:37anything down at Daniel Boone. I didn't know until late that night that anything
- 27:45had even happened. And so I didn't talk to Kent again until I think
- 27:51Tuesday. When I spoke with him on Tuesday, it was not Kent.
- 27:59It was not Kent. I mean he was He sounded like, uh,
- 28:04he was out of it, be honest with you, and and I told
- 28:10him, I said, Kent, you need to get to the hospital,
- 28:11because I told him right for the commission meeting. He had talked about coming
- 28:14in the commission meeting and I could just not even make heads or tails of
- 28:17what he was saying at that time on Tuesday. And then, of course,
- 28:21you know, right before the commission meeting, I get a media call
- 28:22about an email that I wasn't copied on or had not seen, and then
- 28:26I actually saw it on Wednesday. But you know, I think, when
- 28:29when Kent is healthy enough to do so, he's going to address this.
- 28:32And I have never you know, I've been around account a lot. He's
- 28:36never dodged a question. You know, when when he's ready, he'll sit
- 28:38right the show. He will tell you exactly what was going on. And
- 28:44I also tell you this If Kent screws up, he'll admit it. You
- 28:47know, Kent has been um Kent has been very transparent over the years.
- 28:51Every vote that we do, every job offer that we it's in, it's
- 28:55in a public meeting. I mean, every single thing we do is in
- 28:57a public meeting. And so he'll he'll do with this when it can.
- 29:03Well, there's a text of the show here and you can address this and
- 29:04we'll move on from this. Sub Ben again, we're talking to Kna County
- 29:07Comissioner Ben Silango. A text says. The news story reports that three commissioners
- 29:11were discussing issues of Big Ben via email. The question is why were they
- 29:15discussing the issue in clear violation of open meeting laws. That's not a violation
- 29:18of the open meeting That's what I've ever sent. The text doesn't know what
- 29:21they're talking about. But here, So here's the whenever we do a vote,
- 29:23yes, it's not like we can't have a discussion, you know,
- 29:26unless it's in public. That's just silly. You know, whoever sent that
- 29:30needs to go back and check the open meetings law. But so, we
- 29:33had been receiving complaints about big Bend and I had made a suggestion before that
- 29:37maybe we need to focus and look, people were mad over the Shawnee Sports
- 29:42Complex. You know, I took the golf course. You know, I've
- 29:45owned that. You know, people are still upset about that. I get
- 29:48it. It was it was a knife go. It was losing a lot
- 29:51of money. And now you know what Shawnee has done is brought in,
- 29:52you know, over one hundred million dollars an economy again back. But so
- 29:56what we did was we wanted to focus more on Big Bend. Well,
- 30:00we've been getting a lot of complaints about Big Ben because all those displaced golfers
- 30:03were going out there to play. And so I had made a suggestion,
- 30:06you know, months before that, and then again the morning of May fifteenth,
- 30:11I sent an email that said, why don't we consider just like a
- 30:14separate entity, making Big Bend a separate entity with a separate board and a
- 30:18separate director and separate employees, people that are there all the time. You
- 30:22know, our parks board does a wonderful job. We've got great people on
- 30:27that board. They do a fantastic job. It's a big job though.
- 30:30There's a lot of stuff to cover, you know, throughout the county and
- 30:33so I thought was if we could focus more, kind of drill down more
- 30:36on just this one area, that maybe we could resolve some of the issues
- 30:41people that are there full time, you know, dealing with this golf course
- 30:44all the time. So that was my suggestion. Of course, I can't
- 30:48respond it via email, which is now public, and said I and I
- 30:52think it was put off by which is fine, And Ken'll tell you if
- 30:56you know. Yes, so I think he was fond. It's something to
- 31:00the effect of, you know, I'm not willing to conceive that the board's
- 31:03done a bad job. Obviously, that was not what I was suggesting,
- 31:06not at all. I think the world of our our parks board, they
- 31:07do a great job. And then that was then it was kind of over,
- 31:12you know, around eight thirty nine am whatever. And then whatever happened
- 31:17after that happened. But that's that's why the issue was brought up. Was
- 31:22not an open meetings violation. We have discussions all the time. Otherwise our
- 31:30meetings would last ten hours, you know, you know, so we can
- 31:33have general discussions. What we can't do is decided issue outside of a public
- 31:38forum. And I will tell you this, we've never done that. Uh,
- 31:41you know, every time that we vote, it's in public. Every
- 31:45dollar that we spend is in public. Every dollar we spend is on our
- 31:48it's on our website, it's on our agenda. Every vote. There are
- 31:52meeting minutes, you know, people can get those. So yeah, that's
- 31:56uh, we have general discussions all the time. All right, let me
- 32:00gets Really the reason do your schedule beer today was to talk about the Capital
- 32:05Sports Complex. The City Council has been meeting about it. There's now this
- 32:07cooperation with the with the County Commission, with the City Council. There's a
- 32:10five member board. County Commission met last night. Take it from there.
- 32:15Yeah, so this, you know, this project's take a little bit longer
- 32:16than i'd hope to get off the ground. But the mayor and I and
- 32:21the Commission announced a concept last year about trying to bring in tapping into some
- 32:27of that forty billion dollars in economic you know, sports tourism money that we
- 32:31could bring right here into into Kanau County, into the Capital City. We've
- 32:37seen that with Shawnee. You know, we're going to release next year and
- 32:38I'm sorry, next week is the five year anniversary that shawn he has been
- 32:44open and so we're going to show the economic impact from that. We've hired,
- 32:46we've had it been studied, and and we're gonna show it. We
- 32:49can do that with other sports as well, particularly basketball and volleyball female sports
- 32:54for instance. They bring in a lot of money because the girls travel together
- 33:00and they always bring grandparents and parents, and so we want to tap into
- 33:02that market. We looked at what was the best way to do that.
- 33:07You could do it by taking a piece of land that quite frankly is not
- 33:12performing well right now, that is run down, including the parking garages,
- 33:16and so we presented that concept. We had a number of public meetings,
- 33:20got a lot of input, really good input actually, and so last night
- 33:23at the commission meeting and then Wednesday night at City Council we approved the structure
- 33:29of that board that's going to kind of move this project forward. We've got
- 33:34forty million dollars in earmark requests out to our US senators, twenty of which
- 33:37have been advanced. Twenty million has been advanced. We agreed last night to
- 33:43transfer five million dollars into a separate fund to kind of fund the architectural,
- 33:46the engineering part, and then the real problem quite frankly has been dealing with
- 33:52the bondholders. You know, we had to announce the concept before we could
- 33:57do anything because I needed to go around and get votes both at City Council
- 34:00and at the County Commission. The bondholders have taken that opportunity then to now
- 34:05essentially holdest hostage trying to get you know, higher than fair market value.
- 34:07We'll deal with them one way or other. It's going to be dealt with
- 34:10ultimately. If we can't go, if you know, the bondholders prevail or
- 34:15we're unable to negotiate with them, then we'll move the project somewhere else.
- 34:19But you know, my goal was to have it right downtown because I think
- 34:22that's going to generate the biggest economic impact. So you can stay and play
- 34:27under one roof, so you can use what the the Charleston Coliseum Convention Center
- 34:30with, you know, this wonderful asset that the city already has. You
- 34:32combine it with an indoor supports complex. We're talking about hosting the biggest volleyball
- 34:37and basketball tournaments on the East Coast. You know, we can have seventy
- 34:39two teams volleyball teams playing at one time, which will generate millions and millions
- 34:45of dollars, and so that's that's the concept. I want to say this
- 34:47too. You know, Becky separately, the city council President and the mayor
- 34:53did a great job getting this out to city council. That it the vote
- 34:59was twenty five to one. Now that the twenty sixth person wasn't there because
- 35:04his mom was having surgery, he would have voted for it, So technically
- 35:07it was twenty six to one. Every Republican on city Council vote in your
- 35:09favorite. So you know, I appreciate them understanding what we're trying to do.
- 35:15I appreciate their support of this project and moving it forward. Obviously,
- 35:17last night it was a unanimous vote, a bipartisan vote at the County Commission,
- 35:22it was a bipartisan vote at City Council. This is something that will
- 35:24will bring lots of money into the City of Charleston, into Kanau County.
- 35:30It'll bring lots of money into the state of West Virginia. And it's a
- 35:32big project. You know, it's a difficult project. It is. As
- 35:37I've said before, there are a lot of moving pieces on this, but
- 35:39it's a worthwhile project, you know, both for our residents that can use
- 35:44this facility, our kids that can plain this facility, and our businesses who
- 35:47are going to benefit from the economic impact from this facility. Who's just Lango?
- 35:52Before I let you go, I gotta ask him, are you running?
- 35:54Are you running for governor? You know what we're looking at it.
- 35:57I am going to I'm going to expedite my decision. And though you know
- 36:00i'd considered, keep in mind back in twenty nineteen for the twenty twenty,
- 36:04I didn't even announce until October. This is a new thing, people announcing,
- 36:08Like twelve years of fans forgot. Yeah, as soon as we get
- 36:12out of one cycle, we're in the next. But so I didn't announce
- 36:14until October. Last time, Stephen Smith had already had a year head start
- 36:16on me. I was still able to prevail on the primary. But I
- 36:20want to announce early this time. So I anticipate making make an announcement on
- 36:24July fifth. July fifth, all right, write that down July fifth,

- 39:32to be such short notice. We talked about this, like, what over
- 39:37a couple of months, Over a couple of months, did you have anticipated
- 39:38you would get desperate at some point that I would bring in the radio icon
- 39:44known as Shockley. So, so a little bit about you, and then
- 39:47we're gonna play ten questions a little bit later on. But how long has
- 39:50it been? I think you mentioned since like two oh? How long has
- 39:52it mented you? Where I know you are a caller to the Jack knees
- 39:55you? And how long has it benched? You were actually on the air
- 39:58in Charleston, in Charlesonaria, I think it was two thousand and seven,
- 40:01myself and Steve Animal and the radio station we were working at there, and
- 40:06then in the Huntington market. I signed off in two thousand and nine at
- 40:13our friend Jay Nunneley his creation YEP created that rock station there in Huntington,
- 40:17which is still there, still doing well. But I got tired of the
- 40:22poverty and thought I'll go to graduate school and maybe make a dollar or two
- 40:27more. Now are you a natives? I grew up in Dunbar, born
- 40:30in Parkersburg, Okay, all right, all right, so what have you
- 40:32been doing? What are you doing to pay the bills? Now? Um?
- 40:36I wound up getting a couple of masters degrees, and after about six
- 40:39or seven years of bouncing around, I worked for the National Archives as an
- 40:45archives specialist National Archives in Washington, d C. College Park, Maryland.
- 40:51That's good stuff, interesting work, It sounds like, yeah, it is.
- 40:53I mean, you know, if you're a big history nerd like I
- 40:57am, being able to do a little bit of rioting as an historian and
- 41:00also to work in archives, be in the forefront of making documents accessible to
- 41:07researchers into the public, that's uh, definitely something that we really enjoy doing.
- 41:15Talking to us. Shockley, he has a first name, But when
- 41:16your last name is Shockley, it's just it. That's what you went by.
- 41:20There was Shockley, right, your first name. Uh my, if
- 41:22someone uses my first name, it means that they don't really know me that
- 41:27well, or they've known me since grade school. Yeah, it's you.
- 41:30It's your mother yelling at you. Yea, here, there you go.
- 41:34That's it. What was it that attracted you to the radio business, you
- 41:37know, it was in the late seventies. I'm bored I'm a kid,
- 41:45I'm the the youngest of three, trying to avoid getting beat up in the
- 41:49house. And the one friend I had was the radio. And in the

- 42:00duper Charley Cooper, and we had Frank George, we had Al Saley,
- 42:04Red Daryl Daniel's doing the news. And radio was my friend from that point,
- 42:09and so I was just a huge fan. Always wanted to go into
- 42:14radio because of those cats. And at that same time you also had on
- 42:17television, you had w KARP and Cincinnass, so many of us of that,
- 42:23and you and I were within the same age group a year two apart.
- 42:28That's the reason that we got in. Yeah, I mean it was
- 42:30for me. I've told the story before. I mean, you know,
- 42:32I always radio was always played at my house. It was always on the
- 42:37local radio station in Logan was always a butt. We could pick up the
- 42:42stations out of Pikeville, Kentucky, out of Huntington, out of Charleston.
- 42:45Steve Hayes was one of my idols that did the old get up and Go
- 42:47show on at the time what was called Hit one hundred KIFMA and Huntington,
- 42:52Steves now in Portsmouth, Ohio. Steve Hayes was one of the ones again.
- 42:54But but I mean WKRP in Cincinnati and doctor Johnny Fever. Yes,
- 43:00it's probably what kicked me in the back, said and said you gotta go
- 43:01do this. Uh you know eight year old day if you got to go
- 43:05do this? Yes, you either if you didn't want to be doctor Johnny
- 43:07Fever, you definitely wanted to be Venus fly Trap. H. If you
- 43:12did not want to date Lonnie Anderson, then you wanted to day Bailey Quarters,
- 43:16you know. And this is something I probably should have saved for ten
- 43:20questions. We just we'll get to out of the break. But there's two
- 43:22kind of guys in this world. You're either a Lonnie Anderson guy or you're
- 43:24a Bailey Quarters guy. One percent Bailey Quarters. Well yes, well yes,
- 43:30well you know we've we've dated the Londie Anderson type and you know,
- 43:34so give me Bailey Quarter maintenance. Yeah. But uh, and so what
- 43:37was your first gig? My first gig, Bill Shahan brought me in.
- 43:40It's for Duper one O two another another icon not with us anymore than Yes,
- 43:45he brought me in and it was a news guy initially. And here
- 43:50you are nineteen years old and you're wanting to create a good impression and you
- 43:53know you're wanting to do well, and they hand you you've never done radio
- 43:58before, They hand you a Marantz microphone recorder and they tell you, in
- 44:05your first day on the job, go interview Gaston Caperton and go interview h
- 44:10Senator Rockefeller and a guy who who was shot down in an A ten over
- 44:15Baghdad. That was my first day in radio. Welcome aboard. Yes,
- 44:20there's your key. Yeah, but talk about being thrown in and you know,
- 44:22having to swim. But you know it worked out. I mean from
- 44:25that point, you know, I didn't get any nervousness at all from you
- 44:30know, interviewing you know Bret Michaels for instance, when you've been through that
- 44:35kind of line of fires. Yeah, it's similar to me. We'll do
- 44:37this, we'll go to break. You know. I had done radio for
- 44:40two years and uh, I went to went to Community Technical College and transferred
- 44:45to Marshall and then UH, while I was at Marshall, I started working
- 44:49at a station and I was Math Dave Math Dave twenty twenty years old,
- 44:55and was named as news director of a radway station and a no in Ohio.
- 45:00This was a professional and I think they tell me I was the youngest
- 45:04news director uh in uh in radio in Ohio at least at that time.
- 45:07Maybe. Ever, it's probably not the wisest decision by that company to put
- 45:10this young kid out there like much like you covering governors and whenever they would
- 45:15come to town and senators and whatever at twenty years old, you know.
- 45:17But I did it and and and I loved it. And the thing about
- 45:22about radio, um is the more you do early on, the better off
- 45:25you are. Yes and uh and I have done sales, promotions um,
- 45:30sports um you know, sports play by play on air mornings, nights,
- 45:35overnights, gospel country uh rock uh uh you name it. The only thing
- 45:40that I don't do well in Coople attest to this. I ain't a tech
- 45:44guy. Don't ask me to do anything technical. You get me to send
- 45:49an email, you get me the log into my computer, and here I'm
- 45:51good. Other than that, I'm out most evolving thing, you know,
- 45:53because the gas I never I never started evolving in the world at tech.
- 45:58That's the problem. Well, I don't see any cards over there. You're
- 46:00not chipping off cars. I gotta really If it were up to me,
- 46:02I would have carts and a real real machine here right. All right,
- 46:06it's nine fifty three. We gotta take a break. We'll do ten Questions

- 49:42as a kid, what would it be? Yeah, we already thought about
- 49:45that. WKRP in Cincinnati. Throw me in there anywhere, whether you are
- 49:51an emotional person or not, what is it that always brings a tear to
- 49:55your eye? Old yeller? I'm gonna answered. When you wash dishes,
- 50:04do you leave the water on before rinsing or turn it off? I leave

- 50:59talented singer Kate Boytich. Wonderful voice, wonderful vocalist, and I have seen
- 51:06her perform several times and it's really all about getting the right races. Yeah,
- 51:09there is no there is nothing separating her talent level from some major stars,
- 51:15so hopefully it'll work out well. She's a fantastic singer. She actually
- 51:19came in studio with us around this time last year and just blew people away
- 51:23because I wasn't preparing when that. When I bring a singer into the studio,
- 51:28I rarely ever asked them to perform, because it's like Landau told me
- 51:31this one time. You know, Landell Murphy and I, who have been
- 51:34friends three years. Landau told me he said, people come back to sing
- 51:36something for me. He said, I don't pass you in Kroeger if you
- 51:38if you're a mechanic and say change my oil. Yeah, he said,
- 51:42that's not the way it works. But I but I put her a kind
- 51:45of on the spot. Somebody asked her and she just belt it out,
- 51:47Rhiannon. I mean with just her and her guitar player in studio like you
- 51:52would not believe. And if somebody who has zero musical talent at all,
- 51:55I was in awe of her. I mean I really, I really was.
- 52:00Well, Shark, it has been a pleasure have you on the show
- 52:01today anytime. And let's uh, the artist Steve Animal. We call him
- 52:07the semi world famous Steve Animal or no, I'm sorry, semi legendary.
