Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin today
- 0:04Speaker 1: and the Republican nominee Donald Trump will take to the
- 0:06Speaker 1: stage to accept the party's nomination. It'll also be his
- 0:10Speaker 1: first speaking gig, his first speaking event since he was
- 0:13Speaker 1: shot in an assassination attempt just over a week ago.
- 0:16Speaker 1: The managing partner of fire House Strategies and Marco Rubio's
- 0:20Speaker 1: former chief of staff, Matt Terrell, is with us. Matt,
- 0:23Speaker 1: thank you for being on the program. What are you
- 0:25Speaker 1: expecting from Trump's speech today?
- 0:29Speaker 2: I great to be with you. In terms of the
- 0:31Speaker 2: speech tonight, you know, look, I think the tone of
- 0:34Speaker 2: that speech will be one that's going to be talking
- 0:37Speaker 2: about unity. I think it's'd be a big theme that
- 0:39Speaker 2: we've seen, of course throughout this convention. I think will
- 0:41Speaker 2: be a big theme it's Tony's speech, and not just
- 0:44Speaker 2: unity for the Republican Party, but unity for the country.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And certainly I think you'll touch on the key issues
- 0:51Speaker 2: that American stationwide are focused in on this election, including
- 0:55Speaker 2: the academy, inflation, immigration, and crime among other issues, of course,
- 1:00Speaker 2: but those will be the core issues you'll likely narrow
- 1:03Speaker 2: in on during this speech as well. So We'll see
- 1:05Speaker 2: what he does tonight during the speech, but I think
- 1:07Speaker 2: that's a part of what we'll see in the speech
- 1:09Speaker 2: this season.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Do you think he'll talk about Biden much? Do you
- 1:13Speaker 1: think you'll talk about the facties at home, you know,
- 1:15Speaker 1: on the bag ch house with COVID.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Well, certainly, elections are a referendum on the company in office,
- 1:23Speaker 2: and right now the company is as we help President
- 1:25Speaker 2: Joe Biden. And look, I think a big part of
- 1:27Speaker 2: this speech is going to be drawing contrast not just
- 1:30Speaker 2: between foreign President Trump and President Biden, but former President
- 1:34Speaker 2: Trump and Democratic policies. You know, given that there have
- 1:37Speaker 2: been reports and we're hearing for the reports coming out
- 1:40Speaker 2: this week about discussions around President Biden's candidacy and who
- 1:44Speaker 2: the Democrat nominee will or will not be for president.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Leave that to the Democrat Party to discuss. But you know,
- 1:50Speaker 2: the bottom line is, I think this speech is just
- 1:53Speaker 2: gonna be focused on President Biden, but also the Vice president,
- 1:56Speaker 2: and then obviously on Democrat policies as well, drawing those contrasts.
- 2:00Speaker 2: This can be some pelty as well.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yes, speaking of that policy, A lot of the talk
- 2:04Speaker 1: obviously is about America first, you know, protectionism, less king
- 2:09Speaker 1: on free trade deals, particularly as they result in job
- 2:12Speaker 1: losses in rustbuckets rot spelt states, what what's how worried
- 2:17Speaker 1: should a small trading nation like New Zealand be about
- 2:20Speaker 1: this America First strategy? Is it? Is it going to
- 2:22Speaker 1: have a big impact on the rest of us? Do
- 2:25Speaker 1: you think?
- 2:28Speaker 2: Well? Look, I'll let four persident Trump speak for himself
- 2:31Speaker 2: in terms of his policies, whether it's on domestic or
- 2:33Speaker 2: international issues. I can just tell you, you know, I
- 2:36Speaker 2: think many Americans will look at what he did over
- 2:38Speaker 2: the past four years or excuse me, the four years
- 2:41Speaker 2: that he was president and essentially say, look, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 2: did did they like those four years of the four
- 2:46Speaker 2: president Trump era, whether it's on trade or other issues,
- 2:50Speaker 2: or do they not like it? And they're going to
- 2:51Speaker 2: comparent a trast that record to President Biden's four years
- 2:54Speaker 2: in office. So I think, you know, as voters unpack that,
- 2:57Speaker 2: you know, I think they're going to look at, you know,
- 2:59Speaker 2: how they feel about it and say, you know, as
- 3:01Speaker 2: we go over the next four years into the future,
- 3:04Speaker 2: you know, now, what's in the best interest of the
- 3:05Speaker 2: United States And ultimately, obviously we live in at a
- 3:08Speaker 2: global society here. You know, what's good for the United
- 3:11Speaker 2: States often is good in terms of international dynamics and
- 3:15Speaker 2: making sure we have give partnerships around the world as well.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So look, all of four, President Trump dive into his
- 3:19Speaker 2: policies and it takes shape here. Particulars I think you'll
- 3:23Speaker 2: see in this speech tonight, but certainly that's what that
- 3:25Speaker 2: Americas are focused on, and particularly relates to our economy.
- 3:28Speaker 2: You know, the economy, inflation. Those are vital issues right now,
- 3:31Speaker 2: top tier issues that voters are focused in on here.
- 3:34Speaker 1: All right, Matt, thanks very much for your time. That's
