- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_03: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: And Tristan, I hate to inform you, listen, I'm very thankful for my time here on the podcast.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: I am, you know, my goal is still one thing, and that's to make it to the ringer or bar stool podcast networks.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Uh, but I do have to inform you that if I do return back to just Texas Tech Podcasting, I'm gonna go to either the gambling gauchos or the rambling raiders.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: And so I'm sorry to inform you of that.
- 1:19SPEAKER_05: That seems like a strange decision.
- 1:21SPEAKER_05: I feel like you're really risking your playing time and your uh and perhaps this paycheck that we we we bring in every month.
- 1:27SPEAKER_05: And uh I'm just I'm surprised.
- 1:31SPEAKER_05: I'm surprised you're willing to risk all of that.
- 1:33SPEAKER_05: I'm surprised you're willing to risk the the fame and fortune that we rake in right now.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, man, like I don't know.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: I just feel like it's it's a different, it's a different path.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: It's it's my decision, it's my choice, and you can't be mad about it.
- 1:48SPEAKER_05: So oh, I I I it's hard for me to be mad at you over.
- 1:51SPEAKER_05: I've been talking to scouts from uh hardcore history and I know dino.
- 1:56SPEAKER_05: I haven't heard back from Dan Carlin and uh my favorite dinosaur podcast.
- 2:02SPEAKER_05: So uh I'm just trying to work on my my form and see if I can improve enough to be to be accepted onto the program.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: Okay, so if you don't know what we're doing here, if you don't know what we're doing here, uh we're relating this to Kevin McCullough's decision.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Um, as of recent, if you if you are living under a rock, uh Kevin McCullough has recently announced that after putting his name in the transfer portal, he is now, while his goal is still to stay in the NBA draft and go that route, if he does return to college, he's coming back to not Texas Tech, but one of Kansas or Gonzaga.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: And uh dude, this started a firestorm amongst the Texas Tech fan base last night.
- 2:46SPEAKER_05: Shocked that it did.
- 2:47SPEAKER_05: I am shocked that we are uh uh up in arms about all this.
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: But before we dig into the announcement and stuff like that and and what came of it, and obviously we have TJ to talk about as well and others, but so okay, so you're you're K Mac and you're trying to get into the NBA draft.
- 3:03SPEAKER_05: Why in the heck would you drop this list before knowing you're you're if you're coming back or not?
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: Like why would you tarnish any sort of uh you know all this goodwill you've garnered just to make a graphic to say that I'm looking at going at the either one of one of the two of these?
- 3:24SPEAKER_05: It's not like posting it on Twitter has an effect on what your decision will be in the end.
- 3:29SPEAKER_05: So why would you do that?
- 3:30SPEAKER_05: Like the coaches obviously know that they're they had they're they're talking to you about transferring there.
- 3:35SPEAKER_05: Why would you post this while you're in the NBA uh cycle?
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: You know, I was I was thinking that last night, and I was I was pretty emotional last night just thinking about it and a lot of stuff running through my brain.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: But as I've kind of you know had some time to think about this whole Kevin McCullough situation, and we saw today that Mark Adams put out a tweet uh that said, you know, please respect Kevin McCullough's decision.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: This was a mutual decision.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh that wording has me thinking that either a Texas Tech has a guy uh in mind right now, and we'll get to those couple of options here in a bit.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: Uh we have one scholarship left.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: So basically, uh either Texas Tech has a guy in mind and we can't hold that scholarship for Kevin McCullough to wait that whole NBA draft process to come back, and they both they both just agreed that if Kevin were to withdraw his name from the draft, he would go elsewhere.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: Or it's just a decision that he just wanted to put out there right now because he's receiving interest from two really high-profile programs.
- 4:45SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, to me, I the decision itself, I'm not upset at necessarily.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: You know, the guy I put out a tweet last night from the podcast account, and uh basically I I let what my thoughts were on this out there.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: I said, one, you can respect a player's decision for their future and choosing an option they feel is best because it's their life, you know.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: Ultimately, they choose what they do in their life, and that's fine.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: I can respect that decision.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Number two, I don't have to be happy about it, and I don't have to root for them after they choose to leave because Kevin McCullough, as great as he was these last few years, does not want to be a red raider anymore, which to me, you know, puts him on a lower tier than some of these other Texas Tech greats.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: And listen, I love K Mac, I loved everything he brought to the program, to the team.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: He was great in the community, he was a great person by all means.
- 5:41SPEAKER_03: I have nothing bad to say about Kevin McCullough, but he is choosing to not be a red raider anymore.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: So I am choosing to not root for him anymore.
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, and that's fair.
- 5:53SPEAKER_05: I think we kind of have to fall uh put ourselves into a happy medium here.
- 5:57SPEAKER_05: Um we can obviously be upset about it.
- 5:59SPEAKER_05: I I I fandom is conditional.
- 6:01SPEAKER_05: I feel like sometimes people try to get high, high and mighty and righteous about saying that you have to be true loyal and true to these players no matter what happens.
- 6:11SPEAKER_05: And I don't follow that doctrine at all because it's a two-way street.
- 6:15SPEAKER_05: Like uh you you can you it's not like it's a one, it's not like it's this isn't a mutually beneficial relationship.
- 6:21SPEAKER_05: It's not like the player is sitting here giving everything to us and he's getting nothing out of it in return.
- 6:27SPEAKER_05: You know, he's getting praise, admiration, he's famous, at least small town famous, but that's still way more famous than most of us will ever be in our entire lives.
- 6:34SPEAKER_05: Um, so it's not like this isn't in supported, obviously.
- 6:37SPEAKER_05: So it's not like he's that these players get nothing out of the fans, and it's just all them giving it giving it to the fans.
- 6:43SPEAKER_05: But I I think you're allowed to retract your fandom from a player if they commit to one of the two cardinal sins when it comes to transferring.
- 6:51SPEAKER_05: One, you don't go to a rival, you never go to a rival.
- 6:54SPEAKER_05: That's obviously just off the table of when having fans win you over.
- 6:58SPEAKER_05: And two, you don't go in conference, especially going to an in-conference team like Kansas.
- 7:03SPEAKER_05: So we can obviously say, you know, one of them was Kansas, the Kansas Jayhawks, the most despised team in the Big 12 in basketball just because of how much they win.
- 7:11SPEAKER_05: So it's just frustrating for him to leave us for a blue blood, you know, and in most most people from the outside, and of course, we could admit that it's a step up in quotation marks, program-wise, like level-wise, um, and pedigree-wise.
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: So it's just frustrating to see our small town hero, our our red raider for life, in his words, how he wasn't going anywhere, uh, just bail on us for an interconference rival that doesn't need the help.
- 7:37SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 7:38SPEAKER_05: That doesn't need a K-Mac.
- 7:40SPEAKER_05: It's just frustrating.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: I get what you're saying with that, and I agree for the most part.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Um, the destination does matter.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: You know, we as mad as we still probably would have been at Chris Beard, it it wouldn't have been as bad if he went to North Carolina or he went to some other school at a conference, but he went to our biggest rival, which is UT.
- 8:02SPEAKER_03: And now Kansas is a rival in basketball because we have both been at the top of the league the last few seasons competing for Big 12 championships against each other.
- 8:11SPEAKER_03: Now they're not like a hardcore rival, I would say, but this is a matter of this player, like you said, choosing a program that has higher pedigree, is thought of higher.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: And that hurts Texas Tech because we want to get there.
- 8:29SPEAKER_03: And by not retaining players like Kevin McCullough, you are, you know, you're kind of looked down on.
- 8:35SPEAKER_03: You're trying the the overall consensus is people saying, well, he left for a better program.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: And it's like, well, now that's not necessarily true, but I know they just won the national championship.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: They're a blue blue blood in basketball.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: I get it.
- 8:52SPEAKER_03: We're trying to get to that status, and by him making this decision, it kind of you know brings us back down, which you know isn't great in the national perception.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: Listen, I'm not upset because I know that our team is going to be fine.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: I know that our program is going to be fine with or without Kevin McCullough.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: Our team looks great for next season.
- 9:12SPEAKER_03: We're going to talk about some new additions here coming.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: That's why I wasn't so upset with the TJ stuff either, because our program is going to be fine.
- 9:20SPEAKER_03: We always make it work.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Mark Adams always makes it work.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: And, you know, I'm not Kevin McCullough can do whatever he wants.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: It's his choice, it's his life, but we don't have to be happy about it and we don't have to support him from here on out.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: No, absolutely not.
- 9:35SPEAKER_05: And that's a good uh good uh segue to compare and contrast the TJ situation to the K-MAC situation.
- 9:40SPEAKER_05: You know, whenever TJ announced that he was leaving and an initially and then obviously eventually decided to land at uh the uh University of Illinois.
- 9:47SPEAKER_05: You know, we can all understand that move.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: You know, this guy is trying to get one last some sort of stardom season to get some draft stock going, and he decides to go home near Chicago in Illinois.
- 9:59SPEAKER_05: So and it's a program that's on the yup, you know, they're having some good years, and it's out of sight, out of mind, is my main point here.
- 10:06SPEAKER_05: Is it he goes to Illinois?
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: We never have to worry about that ever again.
- 10:10SPEAKER_05: And it's we can say that you know, I'm glad to see T AJ doing well.
- 10:13SPEAKER_05: There's no ill will there.
- 10:14SPEAKER_05: He did a great time at Texas Tech, and he didn't sabotage the program in any way by making that move.
- 10:20SPEAKER_05: It doesn't look bad on Texas Tech because everyone could understand why he did it.
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: It's just with the while with the K-Mac kind of goes back to what you said, it it deteriorates the Texas Tech brand while the move is happening, especially if he chooses Kings.
- 10:32SPEAKER_05: If he goes to Gonzaga, it'll be much the same story as TJ, except you know, like really go to Gonzaga.
- 10:38SPEAKER_05: But it's just that's just how it feels to me because no one's mad at TJ, everyone's just kind of ever a lot of people are bum, but no one is you know talking mess.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:48SPEAKER_03: I yeah, the TJ decision was accepted much better in the Red Raider community because of their last seasons.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: I mean, TJ these last couple years just hasn't really found uh his true role, he hasn't really shown what he can do at Texas Tech, and especially last season, playing through injuries.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: And you know, he's come off the bench, he's starred a few games, he's done this and that, he's played crunch time, he hasn't played crunch time.
- 11:12SPEAKER_03: He wants to go for a different change of scenery because ultimately his goal is to get to the NBA.
- 11:16SPEAKER_03: And I I just don't whether blame the system, blame the player, blame whatever.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: It wasn't working for TJ here, and we all kind of understood that.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: And so, yeah, we were fine with TJ going, and he went to a Big Ten school.
- 11:27SPEAKER_03: We're not gonna play Illinois unless we somehow end up in the tournament or whatever.
- 11:31SPEAKER_03: But you know, it's guys like Micah Peavy, it's guys like Kyler Edwards, it's guys like potentially McCullough that go to in-state or or you know, closer schools, programs that you play, all that kind of stuff where you're now not with us, but you're 100% against us, which we're not cool with that.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Man, I'm a Texas Tech fan, I'm not a Kevin McCullough fan, I'm not a Kyler Edwards fan, I'm not a I'm not even a Kevin O'Banner fan, even though I freaking love that guy.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: I'm a Texas Tech fan, and so if these guys decide to leave the program, I'm not going to support them.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: And you know, you can do what you want, you can support these guys through and through.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: I've never really bought into that mentality.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: I know a lot of guys were all aboard the Kyler Edwards after he decided to leave and still love Kyler Edwards.
- 12:17SPEAKER_03: I I don't I don't love Kyler Edwards anymore, I don't love Kevin McCullough anymore.
- 12:21SPEAKER_03: I don't love DJ Shannon.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: I sported the crap out of that guy, and now he's not with my team anymore.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: It's no hard feelings, it just is what it is.
- 12:29SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think we're on the same wave leak with this one.
- 12:31SPEAKER_05: It's it's the only team I care about is Texas Tech.
- 12:34SPEAKER_05: And if if you're not if you're not helping Texas Tech, then I don't really care about you anymore.
- 12:38SPEAKER_05: I I don't.
- 12:39SPEAKER_05: I I'm not checking in, seeing how you're doing.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: I'm not, I'm not going, oh, I gotta tune in because I gotta see how this guy's doing and following him on Twitter.
- 12:46SPEAKER_05: Honestly, uh a guilty uh uh confession is as soon as a player transfers out, I unfollow them on Twitter.
- 12:54SPEAKER_05: Obviously, that doesn't affect them at all.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm not trying to make a statement with this, I'm just saying that's just how much I don't care anymore.
- 12:59SPEAKER_03: You're so brave.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: No, no, no.
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: It's like, oh, look at me, I'm gonna make a stance.
- 13:03SPEAKER_05: You're losing a follower, okay.
- 13:06SPEAKER_05: But how will they ever recover?
- 13:08SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 13:09SPEAKER_05: I'm just making I'm just saying that in as a vehicle to say, I don't care, like I don't need to see it anymore.
- 13:14SPEAKER_05: I just want to focus in on Texas Tech, and that's that's the way I feel.
- 13:18SPEAKER_05: Like, I in in it's better to be that way with fans than for us to hate or not hate's a strong word, for us to dislike you because K Mac going to Kansas, we dislike you now, we don't like you anymore.
- 13:31SPEAKER_05: Everything you did at Texas Tech, while it was great when it was happening, you kind of flipped it on its head, and now it doesn't matter as much anymore.
- 13:37SPEAKER_05: Now we don't like you because of everything you did at tech just to turn around and go to Kansas, if that's the case.
- 13:43SPEAKER_05: So, but if he goes to the NBA, this is all water on the bridge, isn't it?
- 13:47SPEAKER_05: But just kind of sucks that you gotta sting us a bit before if if something like that happens.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's just kind of if he goes to the NBA, it's just kind of like, okay, well, you kind of slapped us on the way out, all right.
- 13:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, I I do.
- 13:58SPEAKER_03: I hope he plays in the NBA, all that sort of stuff.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: You know, I again he's a good dude.
- 14:03SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, we appreciate everything he did at Texas Tech.
- 14:06SPEAKER_03: If he's not gonna be a Texas Tech, I'm not gonna root for him next season unless he's going professional.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: So that's kind of the end of that.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: I think there's a kind of a firestorm.
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: A lot of people had a lot of opinions last night about the decision.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, I think if you're on complete opposite ends of the spectrum on this thing, you're probably wrong.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: So I would put I would put certain uh certain former players, certain uh former players' mothers' opinions on one end of the spectrum, and then I would put uh you know, the the people calling him a bitch and and all that kind of crap in in his comment section on the other end of the spectrum.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Both of those sides are wrong here.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: You you know, don't expect support when you choose to leave the program and don't freaking call the kid names for making the decision that he believes is better for his future.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, open letter.
- 14:52SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously, probably the people commenting in in these in these in these tweets aren't aren't really in touch with uh a podcast like ours and all that, but like seriously, why stop commenting on these uh posts if you're upset about it, just move on.
- 15:08SPEAKER_05: Y'all know you can keep scrolling, right?
- 15:10SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't understand the mentality of talking mess to a to a young guy who's trying to do the best in their life.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm mad about it, but I'm not gonna sit here and tweet this kid, this the this college student, that you ruined my life because you're going to another school.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: I'm not going to do that, and you shouldn't do it either, guy.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: If you're listening to the case, those are those are probably those are probably the lowest, uh lowest people.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, just and it and it they do it for everything, they'll do it for if they have a bad game.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: They'll tweet, they'll tag them in a tweet and say, You need to do this better.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: It's like, bro, chill out.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: All right, don't freaking tweet at the guy after he had a bad game.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: I'm sure he's trying to do better himself.
- 15:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, I've always had an issue with those people.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, my rule is I'll tag a guy if it's positive.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna tag a guy if it's not positive.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: I you know, if he surges name, that's on him.
- 16:00SPEAKER_05: But it's yeah, it's good only.
- 16:02SPEAKER_05: You can only reply good.
- 16:03SPEAKER_05: Same in same in recruiting uh tweets.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: These are high schoolers.
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: This is another level, guys.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: You cannot be talking mess to high schoolers if they don't pick your school.
- 16:14SPEAKER_05: That is I that that that is even lower.
- 16:17SPEAKER_05: So stop it.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: Add recruits, even if it's positive.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: Don't tweet at them, just don't stop.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: It's let them make their decision, they're freaking 18 years old.
- 16:26SPEAKER_05: We we promise, we promise Twitter isn't making uh a make or break decision on where they're gonna go, and it's not and and it's just it makes you look trashy.
- 16:35SPEAKER_05: Whenever you look trashy, you make the rest of us look trashy.
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: It's not cool, it's not fair for us, and it's it's not, I mean, it's not even fair for you, but it's it's just not fair that we we all look bad because you want to complain to a kid about a decision he's making.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: We also have to understand that this happens with literally every single big fan base including the this is not a Texas Tech specific thing, but an every team specific thing happens everywhere.
- 16:58SPEAKER_05: Let's let's could let's get that perfect segue then.
- 17:01SPEAKER_05: Moving moving into Michigan fans, they're all trash now.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: But Michigan fans are mad, they're angry, they're angry and at Mark Adams, who is what who is who's the nicest guy of all time.
- 17:17SPEAKER_03: I'm putting them up there.
- 17:22SPEAKER_05: Is a coward and should be ashamed of himself.
- 17:25SPEAKER_03: Oh, what an idiot, man! That was such an idiotic move.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, if you don't know what we're talking about, uh, the whole situation with TJ is he decided to ultimately transfer to Illinois.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: He was looking at Michigan.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: Apparently, there was a credit issue with transferring to Michigan.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: He would have either had to take summer classes, I believe, at Texas Tech to be able to uh transfer into Michigan.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: And we were not, we were withholding him from doing that because it would mean to keep him on scholarship and we could not add players or we couldn't use that scholarship.
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: Who in the right mind, who what coach, what team in the right mind would withhold a scholarship to improve your team for next season for a guy who is for sure not going to be on the team next season so he can go to another school?
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: That is the most idiotic thing in the world.
- 18:22SPEAKER_03: That's not being mean to the player, that's just is what it is.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: That just means Michigan's administration admissions or whatever is stupid, it's too hard.
- 18:32SPEAKER_03: Why would you make it more difficult like that?
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: That's on Michigan, that's not on Mark Adams.
- 18:37SPEAKER_05: No, absolutely not.
- 18:38SPEAKER_05: And it the the issue here isn't so much uh the process you just explained out.
- 18:43SPEAKER_05: The real issue here is a kid tweeting such an accusatory tweet like that.
- 18:50SPEAKER_05: Like you don't just walk around calling people cowards, especially respected people in your field, and then of course it's just the ultimate irony is deleting said tweet of calling someone a coward.
- 19:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's the coward in the situation, but dude, it's that that is just immaturity on another level, and and he and the funniest thing is he didn't even go to Michigan, he ultimately didn't even go to Michigan, and just for a kid to think that this is what stopped him from going to Michigan and having the feeling of tweeting this out and tagging the man and just really leaning into it, it just shows such a level of immaturity, and it's just so disrespectful disrespectful, and it's just Twitter in its worst form, it's just that it's just so stupid.
- 19:36SPEAKER_03: No, hold on, you're talking about very mature Michigan whose head coach literally slapped another man on the court last year.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: Okay, so we can come to expect this from Michigan, and yeah, and yeah, you're right, Hunter Dickinson, uh, the the uh Michigan Center, uh calling out Mark Adams on Twitter and also Juwan Howard's son, Jace, I believe is his name, uh, also called him out on Twitter.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: And it's that's just ridiculous.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: You call the guy a coward and then you delete the tweet just immediately after doing a very cowardly thing.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: Um, it was ridiculous, it was uncalled for.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: The kid doesn't know the whole story.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: And if you've ever, ever met Mark Adams or talked to Mark Adams in your life, you would know that this man is one of the most stand-up, respected individuals in all of college sports.
- 20:25SPEAKER_03: So this guy, I mean, he's West Texas grandpa.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: He's a great he's one of the nicest guys in the world.
- 20:32SPEAKER_03: And you think, and him and TJ apparently have a great relationship.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: I don't like this was out of nowhere, and this is on Michigan's admissions office for having ridiculous uh standards or whatever they do for for this type of stuff because he got into Illinois just fine.
- 20:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know what?
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: What was the deal with that?
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: Was Mark Adams like, yeah, you can go to Illinois, but not Michigan?
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: Like, what?
- 20:56SPEAKER_05: No, that's right.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: It's Mark Adams who gets to decide what credits go where and how they how they can transfer state to state.
- 21:02SPEAKER_05: Absolutely ridiculous, man.
- 21:04SPEAKER_05: And it's it's just it's so it's so funny that it's coming from Michigan because you you're just like, of course it came from Michigan.
- 21:11SPEAKER_05: What the heck is going on with that program over in Ann Arbor?
- 21:14SPEAKER_05: It's just it seems like it's just so stinky right now, man.
- 21:16SPEAKER_05: There's so much crap oozing from it, and it's just falling apart.
- 21:19SPEAKER_05: I don't understand what their deal is.
- 21:21SPEAKER_05: And and of course, this is coming from a a fan base school and fan base that is beloved across all 50 states.
- 21:28SPEAKER_05: Everyone loves them some Michigan.
- 21:30SPEAKER_05: Uh only good things to ever say about the blue.
- 21:33SPEAKER_05: Um, not at all the longhorns of the of Canada at all.
- 21:36SPEAKER_05: So it's just it uh obviously it was so great to see Texas Tech loyal just rally and go attack, you know.
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: They just the armies unleashed on this on this man.
- 21:48SPEAKER_05: And normally I am not a Twitter mob kind of guy, but he kind of asked for it.
- 21:53SPEAKER_05: Oh, he did.
- 21:54SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 21:55SPEAKER_05: You can't just do that and not expect anything to come right back at you.
- 21:58SPEAKER_05: Uh obviously, I would.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: Partake, but I I'm I'm definitely in with uh throwing some little little trash talk here and there.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: But it's it's that was that was the rare occasion I actually tweeted a negative thing at a current college athlete, but you know it was it was harmless ultimately.
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: I didn't say much about it, but um yeah, it was you know it was a whole thing.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: So also during that day, we really became bros with the Alni fan base over here, who also now hate or well, they've hated Michigan for a while, right?
- 22:27SPEAKER_03: We now hate Michigan, so we're bros over here, the alni and the red raiders.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: So uh shouts out Illinois.
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: I've always been a big I guy, you know, massive uh all over some orange and blue Illinois, Illinois guy.
- 22:43SPEAKER_05: Alliani, that's guy.
- 22:45SPEAKER_05: Whenever people see me in public, they're like, that's the alumni guy.
- 22:48SPEAKER_05: And I'm like, that is me.
- 22:51SPEAKER_05: I am the alumni guy.
- 22:52SPEAKER_05: And now that TJ is there with uh with our blessing and uh a fun fan base, I think we can definitely uh have some fun with them and watch them, like you said, absolutely rock Michigan.
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: For sure.
- 23:03SPEAKER_03: Uh I will say one more thing about TJ.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: You know, wish him wish him you know the best, I guess, in his endeavors.
- 23:10SPEAKER_03: He still left, but you know, was still, you know, whatever he did.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: He's not potentially transferring to Kansas.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: So yeah, exactly.
- 23:16SPEAKER_03: And also you go.
- 23:19SPEAKER_03: I I could not have unfollowed TJ's mom quicker.
- 23:21SPEAKER_03: I couldn't have of course, I never uh I dude.
- 23:25SPEAKER_03: Maybe some people really like sucking up to her.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: I could not have hit that unfollow button quicker.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, and that's all I'll leave it at uh with with her.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: But um also we should mention Chabuzo Agbo found a new home.
- 23:38SPEAKER_03: He is going to Boise State.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, wish him the best because yeah, hey, you know, he and and this is kind of the sad reality of it.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: He didn't do much here, and we liked him and we appreciated him.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: And and you know, Ryan Mainville.
- 23:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the Buzo Hive uh Ryan Mainville shortless.
- 23:56SPEAKER_03: So bring bring Ryan's Twitter account back.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Old boy got hacked and free Ryan.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Free Ryan.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: He got put in Twitter jail just like Cyclone Larry.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: Uh but uh no, yeah, Buzo's off to uh to a uh the mountain west and uh you know wish him the best and and yeah, that'll do hey quick question is is is the court blue as well?
- 24:17SPEAKER_05: Do they play on a blue court?
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: I don't know what Boise State's court is, actually.
- 24:22SPEAKER_05: I need to I need to check while we while we while we move on here.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you gotta look that up because I I'm interested because their field, of course, is very blue.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: Uh no, their court is regular.
- 24:34SPEAKER_05: It is regular, it's regular.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: Okay, good for Boise State.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 24:38SPEAKER_05: I'm kind of I'm kind of disappointed.
- 24:39SPEAKER_03: Uh I wonder full sin.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: That's a great transition to a couple additions that we got on the Texas Tech basketball team because one, of course, is coming from Oregon.
- 24:51SPEAKER_03: And if you have not seen Oregon's basketball court, it's the worst free in the world.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: It's atrocious, it's so bad.
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: There is LASIK surgery looking at it.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: I don't know how these players see the free throw line, see the three-point line.
- 25:08SPEAKER_03: It's all like black silhouette.
- 25:09SPEAKER_03: If you haven't seen it, look it up.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: It's all like black tree silhouettes in a circle pattern around the entire court.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: It's awful.
- 25:18SPEAKER_05: You see what they're going for, but it doesn't work.
- 25:21SPEAKER_05: It doesn't work at all.
- 25:23SPEAKER_03: It's really hard to do that kind of thing, and it does not work for Oregon.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: But the good news is Davion Harmon, who is the guard we are now getting at Texas Tech from Oregon, he doesn't have to play on that court anymore.
- 25:36SPEAKER_03: He gets to play at the USA back in the Big 12.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, Davion Harman, this was the guy that was alluded to for weeks.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: If you follow Texas Tech, eyeball emoji season, this was who it was for.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: Basically, he was a guy that we had even before he entered the transfer portal because he wanted to make sure that he had uh you know the waiver and all that good stuff because he's already transferred before.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: He used to be in the Big 12, he used to be with Oklahoma.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: So now in his second transfer, he is returning to the Big 12, returning to Texas Tech.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it's it's interesting.
- 26:10SPEAKER_05: I mean, uh, I you kind of scratched your.
- 26:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, okay, it wouldn't be fair to say this without admitting something else as well.
- 26:17SPEAKER_05: But this would be his third school.
- 26:18SPEAKER_05: I mean, you're you're pop the number three.
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: You definitely start to wonder will he be at Texas Tech next year as well?
- 26:24SPEAKER_05: You know, well, or will he want to do another pop?
- 26:27SPEAKER_05: I guess I mean, I guess, but you can also look at Adonis Arms who popped around as well.
- 26:30SPEAKER_05: But he gradually got higher and higher until he made it to the pinnacle of college basketball.
- 26:36SPEAKER_05: Well, this man has just been popping around P5 programs, so well, and just and and look at look at his first transfer.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: He was at Oklahoma for two years and then he decided to transfer to Oregon.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: But during that time frame, Lon Kruger retired, his head coach at Oklahoma.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: So that may have had something to do with his transfer to Oregon.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: And then he tried at Oregon, it clearly didn't really work out for him.
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: His stats kind of went down a little bit.
- 26:59SPEAKER_03: Oregon was they weren't a very good basketball team last year, just saying it plain and simple.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: They didn't make the tournament.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: Uh, they they I think they won a game or two in the NIT, but um, it's not like they were a horrible basketball team, but it just wasn't a good fit.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: And he probably realized that and probably realized, hey, I'll go back to the Big 12 where I kind of thrived in my you know first couple of years.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: He was a really good player at Oklahoma.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: I really I remember playing him uh you know in the uh in the 2020 season and the 2019 season.
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: And I was I was scared, I was like, this guy's good.
- 27:29SPEAKER_03: I do not want to deal with Davion Harman, and I'm glad he's out of the Big 12 now.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: Well, and now I'm even more glad that he's back in the Big 12 with our team.
- 27:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean that is cool to see him kind of make this horseshoe run here, right back to where he was.
- 27:43SPEAKER_05: Um, and I'm glad he's on our side, like he just said.
- 27:45SPEAKER_05: So um interesting to get, you know, this the transfer game has been incredible.
- 27:49SPEAKER_05: Apparently, we're number one in the nation with the with these guys we're adding on here.
- 27:53SPEAKER_05: So, hey, I'm not gonna complain about a baller coming over.
- 27:56SPEAKER_05: I'm just saying it's just kind of funny to see the state of college basketball, and it's actually benefiting us right now with being school number three, and third time is indeed the charm, as they say.
- 28:05SPEAKER_05: So let's go.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, dude, super hyped about him.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: Uh averaged 10.8 points per game last year, uh, 2.1 assists and almost one and a half steals a game.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: Uh shot 36% from the three-point line, something we desperately need uh to improve on from last year to this year.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: Yes, we need some better three-point shooting.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, he's also he handles the ball nicely.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: He wasn't he's not a true point guard, I would say.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: He's got kind of the the size and the makeup of a true point guard, but he just really isn't.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: And he didn't do that at Oregon last year.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: He played, he really handled the ball more at Oklahoma, and I thought that was a better roll for him anyway.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: So I'm sure he's gonna do that uh here at Texas Tech.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, like I said, uh can shoot the three ball at a pretty consistent rate.
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: Uh long arms, so helping deflections and steals, uh, and for being a shorter guy, quote unquote, you know, shorter for basketball at 6'2.
- 29:00SPEAKER_03: Um, he also has a high release on his jumper.
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: So I, you know, this is a good addition.
- 29:05SPEAKER_03: Whether he's going to be the point guard, the point guard for Texas Tech next year, I don't know yet.
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: We still have, you know, I think another spot on the roster to make up with some other potential transfers.
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, so we'll see how it plays out.
- 29:18SPEAKER_03: But I think he's gonna be a starter and he's gonna be good for us next year.
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man, especially with the uh the names we've been losing.
- 29:25SPEAKER_05: I'm glad to see that Mark Adams has really turned it on with the transfer portal for the second year in a row here.
- 29:30SPEAKER_05: So uh definitely why we extended him.
- 29:32SPEAKER_05: So it's exciting to see these uh new guys that were that are gonna hopefully be our household of names.
- 29:37SPEAKER_05: Now that you know that's unfortunately just not the case with a lot of them anymore.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, for sure.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: So uh the other transfer we got, and we were waiting for this guy because it was rumored ever since he entered the transfer portal that Texas Heck was going all in on him.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: Uh, we mentioned him a few times on the past pods, but uh the Big Maple himself, the tortilla king, as we have crowned him.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: Uh Fardos Amack is coming in, uh, officially a red raider.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: Now, you know, just to bring it down a little bit, when he was announcing on the field the 68 uh podcast that he would his next uh college decision, uh, he did say he's still 50-50 on staying in the NBA draft or coming back to college.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: To me, if you're making this decision, I think you're leaning towards coming back to college.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: And I don't know if that 50-50 is necessarily what it is.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: I think the guy's gonna come back to college.
- 30:25SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't think he's really mocked highly in a lot of these early draft boards and all that kind of stuff.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: Uh, so I do expect Farr Asa Mac to actually play for Texas Tech next year.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: And we have our we have our starting center now.
- 30:38SPEAKER_03: This is great.
- 30:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, I don't know how much of a science there is to this, but the way he's just acting on social media, it it really seems like he's celebrating the fact that he's going to a new college more so than the fact that he's got a chance at the NBA.
- 30:50SPEAKER_05: You know, he's changed his profile picture to us and everything, and and just really is interacting with the fan base a ton in a lot of fun ways.
- 30:58SPEAKER_05: And so I'm with you.
- 31:00SPEAKER_05: I think this just says that I he is probably coming back to college, and I hope he does.
- 31:03SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously, it's a young man to go get the bag, you can't return that kind of that kind of money down and that kind of opportunity.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: Well, now, well, now they're they're also getting the bag here.
- 31:12SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, I understand that, but you know, I'm just so used to talking about the bag in professional sports more so than college, you know.
- 31:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because you know you're about to go make a living or career out of it rather than you know in college.
- 31:23SPEAKER_05: So uh, but that's awesome, man.
- 31:25SPEAKER_05: To get to have our center who actually has some uh other non-center abilities is really cool.
- 31:30SPEAKER_05: Um, how do you think so this affects the bocho relationship at all?
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: No, I think it's good.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: I don't think bocho was ready to be a starter on this team yet.
- 31:37SPEAKER_03: I think he's still pretty raw in terms of just overall skill set.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: I think he showed a lot of flashes of of uh good stuff last year for tech, and I'm glad he stayed.
- 31:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, love me some bocho, but don't want to lose some some French connection.
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: Exactly, exactly.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: So I think Bachos is gonna be fine.
- 31:52SPEAKER_03: He I don't think he was really expecting to start next year anyway.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: Um, but AMAC is gonna come in, he's gonna be your starting center.
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: He's six foot eleven, 245 pounds, averaged uh almost 19 points a game and nearly 14 rebounds a game last year.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: Uh also 46 three-point shooter.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: Now it wasn't on very high volume, he only made 20 of them, but uh, you know, still 46 from the three-point line.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: That's a seven-footer.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: That's pretty good.
- 32:15SPEAKER_03: And you can really tell a shooter by their free throw shooting, uh, in my opinion.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: And I think 72 from the free throw line last year, uh, you know, shows that he can knock down the mid-range.
- 32:25SPEAKER_03: He can uh he showed some stuff where he's taken guys off the dribble, turnaround jumpers from the top of the key.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's shown a lot in his in his film.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: He is the back-to-back uh whack defensive player of the year and was the overall whack player of the year in 2020-21.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: Um, I think stuff about his game, pick and roll expert.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: He's really good in the pick and roll, uh, which will be good to have a guy like Davion Harmon, whoever maybe would pick up another point guard, maybe Malik Wilson, uh, handling the ball a little better.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: Um, he's gonna be nice on that end, uh, can finish at the rim, very polished post moves.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, we saw a guy with really polished post moves in Bryson Williams last year, and now you add this guy, plus you add a couple inches to it.
- 33:06SPEAKER_03: Uh pretty good.
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: So I'm not I'm not trying to say he's gonna be the next Bryson Williams because that's a high standard, but for sure.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, he he shows a lot of signs to be a really, really strong weapon at the at the post there.
- 33:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, exciting, man.
- 33:18SPEAKER_05: And so do you think we have some like early favorites of being the best player on the team next season, then?
- 33:23SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, you can it it's up in the air.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: I could see Jalen Tyson potentially taking that role.
- 33:30SPEAKER_03: You know, we saw a guy in Jared Culver go from year one to year two and take that leap.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: So I don't know, Jalen Tyson hasn't had a lot of uh a lot of time, you know, in actual in games uh because he had to sit out the majority of last season because he transferred.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: But um, you know, I could see a bunch of these guys being like the quote unquote best player.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: But overall, Mark Adams never runs his team like that.
- 33:50SPEAKER_03: He never sort of, you know, he doesn't he doesn't just play it like uh, you know, your best guy goes and scores 20 a game.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: I don't think you're ever gonna have really a 20-point game type of player at Texas Tech.
- 34:01SPEAKER_05: But still, I mean, either there's still always gonna be a guy that starts, it was is the star, you know, it really shines out no matter what system they're in.
- 34:07SPEAKER_05: And that that guy was absolutely Bryson Williams last season.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: No, yeah, no doubt.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: And I mean, that uh Fartas was extremely coveted in the portal.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: I mean, every team he I bet every team reached out to him.
- 34:18SPEAKER_05: So and uh can you tell me uh team that we got over him?
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: Could you uh name any perhaps?
- 34:23SPEAKER_03: Any uh yeah, I could name a team down in Austin that we beat him out for.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: I could also I could also name a team up in uh Washington State over there in Gonzaga that uh we beat him out for.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: And uh apparently I think Iowa and Washington were also in his top five, but he's a Canadian, so we we brought him back down to Texas after all he's really known is uh is up north and then Utah.
- 34:45SPEAKER_03: So uh nobody tells him that it gets cold and loving.
- 34:52SPEAKER_05: I just won't say until it gets cold as all is as I'll get up.
- 34:55SPEAKER_05: He's like, Why is it 10 degrees?
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: It's like oh yeah, yeah, you know, weird year, really good rebounder.
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, you it averaged almost 14 rebounds a game.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: He had 27 games last season with double digit rebounds, he had 15 games with 15 or more rebounds, and he had three games with 20 plus rebounds in that game.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: So, uh, yeah, dude, dude's extremely good.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: Um, uh you know, some highlights some games from last year, um, a game against BYU, who was number 12 at the time.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: He put up 24 points and 22 rebounds.
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: Uh, game at Washington, uh, 15 and 15, and then uh a win against Seattle, who ended up being first in the whack last year, uh, had 19 and 18.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: So, dude can grind on the boards.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: And if you're just talking about a Kevin O'Banner, Fardos AMAC rebounding squad, yikes! It's gonna be tough for other schools to out-rebound those that tandem.
- 35:52SPEAKER_05: Definitely feel like we've got a fan favorite here.
- 35:55SPEAKER_05: I can't wait to see him in the USA.
- 35:56SPEAKER_05: He looks like he's got a lot of energy.
- 35:57SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think I think he's gonna bring whenever he feels that packed USA arena around him, I think he's gonna feed off of that really well.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: Yep, for sure.
- 36:04SPEAKER_05: We should probably no, not to knock on Utah State.
- 36:06SPEAKER_05: Uh well, not Utah State, Utah Valley, right?
- 36:09SPEAKER_05: Uh, not to knock on them, but I'm just sure they don't exactly have the same sort of numbers in an arena like a Texas Tech does.
- 36:15SPEAKER_05: So I'm sure it's gonna be a new experience for him.
- 36:17SPEAKER_03: It's true, no doubt.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: So those guys officially add Texas Tech's roster.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: Uh, look looking forward to those dudes because it, you know, just makes our squad that much better.
- 36:26SPEAKER_03: Um, keep an eye out for 2023 guard Elijah Fisher.
- 36:31SPEAKER_03: He is a top 20 guy in the country in the class of 2023.
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, apparently he's visited tech, apparently he really likes tech.
- 36:38SPEAKER_03: Um, and he could potentially reclassify to 2022 uh to be on next year's team.
- 36:44SPEAKER_03: So uh just keep an eye out on that.
- 36:45SPEAKER_03: I don't know, you know, I I'm not even sure if he's coming to tech yet, but you know, rumors swirling around.
- 36:50SPEAKER_03: Uh keep an eye out for him.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: Also, keep an eye out for Missouri State transfer, Isaiah Mosley.
- 36:56SPEAKER_03: He recently entered his name in the portal, and Texas Tech is one of the teams that is after him.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: Uh, absolute scoring machine averaged 20 points a game last year, um, nearly 43 from the free from the three-point line on almost five attempts per game, which is ridiculous.
- 37:10SPEAKER_03: 90 free throw shooter had two separate 40 plus point games last year.
- 37:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, dude's score and would be exactly what we need.
- 37:17SPEAKER_03: So uh just keep an eye out for those guys.
- 37:19SPEAKER_05: So basically, are these the kind of guys that you know if you're putting on your uh big old ear glasses here about what comp the conversation that makes no sense, but let's just bear with me ear glasses, some some hearing aids would probably be a better to listen on the conversation of Mark Adams and K Mac.
- 37:39SPEAKER_05: That you said perhaps there was a mutual agreement.
- 37:41SPEAKER_05: Do you think these guys have any sort of anything to deal with to do with that?
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: You know, who knows?
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: Who actually knows what goes on between that?
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: That's a private deal with with Mark Adams and K Mac that I'm sure nobody but those two know.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, and and obviously K Mac's family and all that type of stuff.
- 37:58SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, I mean, I could definitely see Mark Adams, you know, telling K Mac, hey, we have a spot for one of these two guys, and it looks like we're gonna get one of these two guys.
- 38:07SPEAKER_03: Again, I don't know anything, we're not insiders, but uh just speculating here, uh and saying, you know, hey, we we only have one scholarship left, and uh, you know, we we have a full roster almost.
- 38:19SPEAKER_03: So uh just just potentially something that went down, and uh, you know, I guess we'll see what happens.
- 38:25SPEAKER_03: But uh yeah, man, basketball looking good next year despite some people leaving.
- 38:31SPEAKER_05: I think I think looking good is probably uh something we begin saying every year under Coach Mark Adams, who got an extension.
- 38:37SPEAKER_05: I don't think we even brought it up yet, man.
- 38:39SPEAKER_05: Our king, uh our old grandpa in the West Plains there has gotten an extension to 2027.
- 38:45SPEAKER_05: I don't know if any money updates have come out, I'm sure they have.
- 38:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, but it's just it's so phenomenal to have this guy here locked in for the next decade.
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: And I mean, obviously, I don't think any of us could be any happier.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I think he showed everything he wanted to from Mark Adams and everything so far recruiting the portal, recruiting high school.
- 39:03SPEAKER_03: He's done a great job with both of those.
- 39:05SPEAKER_03: So um, I'm hyped for it.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: I'm hype for to see the first batch of Mark Adams high school recruits, too.
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, with guys like Pop Isaacs and Robert Jennings, Lamar Washington, and even Jalen Tyson, you know.
- 39:16SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, I think this this isn't like this isn't like one of those, oh, we're extending a guy after one year because he had one you know good season or anything like that.
- 39:25SPEAKER_03: Mark Adams has been here.
- 39:26SPEAKER_03: Mark Adams has been with the program.
- 39:28SPEAKER_03: Kirby trusts him.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: I think the majority of the fan base, if not all the fan base, trusts him.
- 39:33SPEAKER_03: And it is a good move.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: You got to lock the guy down and and give him what he deserves.
- 39:37SPEAKER_05: I mean, I think before he even coached his first game at TechStech as the head coach, he was a proven commodity.
- 39:42SPEAKER_05: Uh, you we know who we were getting, and I don't think anyone was nervous about his transition into the head coaching job.
- 39:47SPEAKER_05: So uh it's just good to have this guy locked down uh until for the further for further notice.
- 39:52SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's not he wasn't going anywhere to begin with.
- 39:54SPEAKER_05: So I'm just glad that we're giving him the respects that he's due of extending his contract, and uh it's just it's gonna be a fun ride, man.
- 40:01SPEAKER_05: And great point saying that this is we're gonna start seeing his first batch of high schoolers because now he's not playing catch up, now he's got his hands on the steering wheel, he's not trying to keep the ship together after last because last summer it basically fell into his lap, and he'll try and keep the pieces together before the next season started.
- 40:16SPEAKER_05: So now it's just it's him full sin, and I'm just really excited to see how he does it.
- 40:20SPEAKER_03: And if he can do that with half a summer and uh make the sweet 16, I trust him to do even more with this year's squad.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: So same uh glad to have Marky Mark here.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: A coach that we did not extend is Sammy Ward, our softball coach.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: Uh, apparently her and uh quote unquote the whole staff was let go uh by Kirby Hokut this past week.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: Uh softball man, we just can't uh seem to get um get it going there.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: Uh apparently there was some more issues with this coach, just like the last coach.
- 40:53SPEAKER_03: And uh it's uh it's not great going on with Texas Tech softball right now.
- 40:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's interesting.
- 40:58SPEAKER_05: I I don't think I've seen the entire staff being relieved before, just like as usually you know the the head coach is like go, and then you put one of the assistant coaches in the interim position.
- 41:07SPEAKER_05: We actually put the uh the softball director of operations, like the AD for softball, uh, into that position, which I've never seen in my life.
- 41:14SPEAKER_05: So it's that's just it's interesting, interesting to see, man.
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: And it's it's it's troublesome because it's this is two times in a row now that something sketchy has gone down with the softball team.
- 41:26SPEAKER_05: And we have we also don't have a great record with our basketball program, but looks like Kristen Gurlig is obviously doing things right.
- 41:32SPEAKER_05: But what is going on with these two sports when it comes to weirdo situations?
- 41:36SPEAKER_05: Uh I don't know what Kirby is doing.
- 41:38SPEAKER_05: Is he just not doing his homework for these sports?
- 41:40SPEAKER_05: Is he just kind of letting some other staff members make these calls?
- 41:43SPEAKER_05: It sounds like he should be paying more attention at this point.
- 41:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I don't know what's going on.
- 41:47SPEAKER_03: I again, we're not insiders, we're not in the program, we're not, you know, figuring out what the hell's happening, but yeah, it's not good.
- 41:54SPEAKER_03: And I can tell you that having uh now what is probably going to be the third, you know, scandalous situation.
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: Now, this hasn't really transpired into much with the recent softball firing, but there were girls that were coming out on social media basically saying, Hey, you know, quote tweeting the the softball release saying that we've let them go, saying, Hey, we need to worry about our mental health and and all that kind of stuff.
- 42:18SPEAKER_03: And you never like to see that because it shows that, and she was only here for two years.
- 42:23SPEAKER_03: There was probably reason, uh, besides the horrible record that uh, you know, she was let go.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: And so uh we really have to put an emphasis on hiring the right people for these sports and uh you know, giving these girls a uh uh you know a leader in the locker room and a and a just a leader in life, and that's what coaches provide.
- 42:42SPEAKER_03: And you know, I think Herbie's been great with certain hires, but uh, you know, he's also hasn't been great with uh one women's basketball coach and now two softball coaches here in the last couple of years, and he's got to figure it out.
- 42:55SPEAKER_05: Oh, absolutely, man.
- 42:56SPEAKER_05: And even the the basketball coach before uh the was stall, what was it with stalling?
- 43:00SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, that's what I was saying.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: That I'm not saying girl like I was saying with uh yeah, no, I'm just saying like remember Candy Whitaker.
- 43:06SPEAKER_05: I mean she uh she had a poor record.
- 43:08SPEAKER_05: But exactly.
- 43:09SPEAKER_05: So these these are some some some dark spots on Kirby's resume over uh an overall res uh stellar resume.
- 43:15SPEAKER_05: But remember you have all these players coming out celebrating, you know, not really celebrating, but like kind of giving their stamp of approval on the decision, not a good look because normally, you know, obviously players will be like we'll still have some respect for their coach even after they get let go.
- 43:28SPEAKER_05: Um, and that's what you'd want if they are at least you know a good person, a good leader for the for the players, even if the record doesn't result into what you want.
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: Um, but it's just this isn't good.
- 43:38SPEAKER_05: I mean, this isn't this isn't what you want out of your favorite uh program.
- 43:41SPEAKER_05: So it's just it's disappointing, and it's time to get it right.
- 43:44SPEAKER_05: And I I hopefully this is a wake up call because it's just what we can do three in a row of this.
- 43:48SPEAKER_05: We better not, you know.
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, let's let's try to improve on softball and yeah, let that program.
- 43:54SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, but I mean, besides what could be some scandalous stuff, uh, TTU softball.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Has gone uh 43 and 56 in the last two years under Sammy Ward and 8 and 28 in Big 12.
- 44:08SPEAKER_03: So uh that's also not good.
- 44:11SPEAKER_03: So, you know, it's just bad, bad stuff all around for softball.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: Let's uh let's hope we get a little turnaround and a and a just a better program moving forward with whoever we hire.
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: And hopefully it's somebody good.
- 44:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's just that the the resources you're provided at Texas Tech, the financial backing and the cultural backing you're given.
- 44:27SPEAKER_05: It's no excuse to have that poor of a record, you know, especially with the attack of conference and all that.
- 44:30SPEAKER_05: Like if you're paying because usually you're playing pretty poor teams.
- 44:32SPEAKER_05: So it's just like you gotta be winning those.
- 44:35SPEAKER_05: I understand the Big 12 is tough, but let's at least try to get 500 here.
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: Come on, so for real, for real.
- 44:40SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, moving on from that.
- 44:42SPEAKER_03: Um, we're gonna talk about some football stuff, and then we're gonna get to our buddy uh Travis Hallm.
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: We're gonna do another version of our the new Big 12, talking with an Iowa State perspective on the new look conference.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: But let's talk about summer or uh spring, I should say, spring ball, uh, a little bit of NFL stuff.
- 44:59SPEAKER_03: Let's start with the draft.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: We had two guys get drafted, Eric Azukama as expected, and Dawson Deaton was also taken in the seventh round of the NFL draft.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, Eric Azukama going to the Dolphins, Deaton going to the Browns.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: We also had Kaylin Geiger uh got picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, DeMarcus Fields got picked up by the Saints, Jonathan Garabay going to the hometown Dallas Cowboys.
- 45:24SPEAKER_04: Love it.
- 45:24SPEAKER_03: Look at that, that was great.
- 45:25SPEAKER_03: And then the most surprising thing that came out today, Marcus Sanosilva, the Texas Tech power forward slash center, has signed as a tight end with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent.
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: Um we all saw this coming.
- 45:43SPEAKER_05: Wow, wild, dude.
- 45:44SPEAKER_05: That is insane.
- 45:45SPEAKER_05: I and it's so funny because you know, we I feel like even on this podcast, we'd always talk about how MSS is built like a truck and just can just bully his way.
- 45:54SPEAKER_05: And I'm not surprised that this is happening.
- 45:57SPEAKER_05: Obviously, it's just that the sheer shock of just the sport transition to a professional NFL football team.
- 46:03SPEAKER_05: This isn't even like Canadian or anything like that.
- 46:05SPEAKER_05: This is like full-blown big time, and it's just so awesome, man.
- 46:08SPEAKER_05: I would love to see the MSS football jersey out there.
- 46:12SPEAKER_05: That'd be so funny.
- 46:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I'm so awesome.
- 46:15SPEAKER_03: This isn't the first time this has happened.
- 46:16SPEAKER_03: There's been a lot of basketball guys that have transitioned, and some have made awesome NFL careers as tight ends.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, you think about it, yeah.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: He wasn't really like the big man.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: Uh necessarily, he was like he played, you know, center power forward, but he's six seven, and that's massive for a tight.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: That's a great tight end size.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: 280.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, he can move really nicely.
- 46:35SPEAKER_03: We saw him stay in front of guards, switching off on pick and roll stuff.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is this is good.
- 46:40SPEAKER_03: I think uh, you know, a team taking a chance on it and just saying, you know, screw it, it's an unfortunate free agent.
- 46:45SPEAKER_03: Why not?
- 46:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I think it's I think it's great, man.
- 46:48SPEAKER_05: And a good showing overall from the Texas Tech Red Raider football team because you know it was it was a it was a decent year, but you know, obviously this these Matt Wells years haven't been kind to us, and it's not like we haven't, you know, we love our boys, but we haven't had a whole lot of superstars, so it's cool to see some of them get their chance uh to go play in the big leagues, even in a down year.
- 47:07SPEAKER_05: So, because let me tell you that I'm sure many will be happy to remind us that the University of Texas had a whole zero players drafted.
- 47:19SPEAKER_05: That is right, the most talent-rich program in the state couldn't put a single player in the NFL draft.
- 47:27SPEAKER_05: Absolutely embarrassing.
- 47:29SPEAKER_05: I I I cannot overstate how embarrassing that should be for the Texas Longhorns.
- 47:34SPEAKER_03: TCU also, uh yeah, I was gonna go around to them as well.
- 47:38SPEAKER_03: Now with any players drafted.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: This was uh this was nuts.
- 47:41SPEAKER_03: I mean, we had two Baylor, I think had six total.
- 47:43SPEAKER_03: So Baylor kind of led the way.
- 47:45SPEAKER_03: They had a great team, they had a lot of great, uh, great weapons on that team last year.
- 47:48SPEAKER_03: And uh even Sam Houston State had a player drafted, and uh the Texas Longhorns, the uh most the richest program in college sports.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, they get their choice of the bunch, and uh, you know, they didn't train up uh five-star and four-star guys to make it to the league.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: And if that's not a reason to not go to Texas, I don't know.
- 48:09SPEAKER_05: The memes make themselves, man.
- 48:11SPEAKER_05: I mean, the joke is always no one does less with more, and this is that exactly.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: So it's just it's unbelievable.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: Um, it I feel like that the brand can only sell itself so far.
- 48:22SPEAKER_05: I hope we uh with the way Joey McGuire is picking headways and recruiting.
- 48:25SPEAKER_05: I I feel like maybe we can be turning some of that tide back towards us, you know, saying that you you do have an opportunity here at Texas Tech, you don't have to go to a UT, you know, just because it's UT, you can come to Texas Tech and be a baller and go to the NFL.
- 48:38SPEAKER_05: So I I it's great for us, it's great for the rest of the programs of the state.
- 48:42SPEAKER_05: And uh I love it.
- 48:43SPEAKER_05: I soak it up.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and we're gonna have two guys from this year's class who I think could potentially play some minutes next year uh in in the NFL, play some snaps.
- 48:52SPEAKER_03: I think Azukama's gonna, you know, sure that wide receiver room over there at Miami now with Tyreek Hill and uh you know uh Jalen Waddle and those type of guys.
- 49:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's it's a crowded tie or uh crowded wide receiver room, but Eric Ezucama's a good player, man.
- 49:05SPEAKER_03: He's gonna find a way, and I think uh I think if it's not with Miami, he'll get traded somewhere and he'll I mean he's gonna find a way in the NFL.
- 49:12SPEAKER_03: I truly believe that.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: And then our boy Garabay or kickers don't get drafted very often, so that's not uncommon for him to go undrafted like that.
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: But Dallas picked him up immediately.
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: Dallas doesn't have a field goal kicker for next year, so he's gonna be right there with I think another guy uh competing for that job immediately.
- 49:28SPEAKER_05: And I mean that I would stay wait, man.
- 49:31SPEAKER_05: That can it could be it probably was the best thing for his career.
- 49:34SPEAKER_05: Man, I just I'm sure they just sent that video out to all the scouts.
- 49:36SPEAKER_05: Sorry to cut you off.
- 49:38SPEAKER_03: No, it's fine, it wasn't just that.
- 49:39SPEAKER_03: He went 15 for 16 on field goals last year.
- 49:42SPEAKER_03: So I mean, obviously that pops out to you.
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: Garabay's fantastic, and I think he can be he can be your cowboys starting kicker next year.
- 49:48SPEAKER_05: That would be so amazing, man.
- 49:50SPEAKER_05: I would love that so much.
- 49:51SPEAKER_05: I'm sure we got a lot of cowboy fans listening, so that I think uh it's probably unanimous.
- 49:56SPEAKER_03: Also, notably, uh the Dallas Cowboys chose Jonathan Garabay over Cameron Dicker, the uh Dicker the kicker, yeah, over the University of Texas kicker.
- 50:06SPEAKER_03: So they have their choice and they chose old Johnny G.
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: But he has a nickname.
- 50:11SPEAKER_05: What what are the whole cowboys doing?
- 50:15SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 50:16SPEAKER_03: Um play for UT too.
- 50:19SPEAKER_03: They hyped that guy up for like four years.
- 50:21SPEAKER_05: I know, man.
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: Oh wow, okay.
- 50:22SPEAKER_05: What are you talking about?
- 50:24SPEAKER_05: They hyping up a UT player.
- 50:26SPEAKER_05: This um that's unheard of.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, but um, okay, hit on quick quick notes from the spring game.
- 50:34SPEAKER_03: I'm sure y'all have heard a lot about it.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: I know it was a while ago at this point, but uh, since we talked to you, uh notable absences.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: Sir Roderick Thompson did not play, Tyree Wilson, uh Kay Briggs, Josiah Pierre, Cole Spencer, Loick Fungi, Trey Cleveland.
- 50:47SPEAKER_03: So we held a lot of guys out of this game.
- 50:49SPEAKER_03: Uh, spring game is what it is, it's very simple.
- 50:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's just kind of a thing for the fans, just to show them a glimpse of next year.
- 50:56SPEAKER_03: Obviously, we're not even close to ready as a team, and Joey Maguire was the first person to tell us that.
- 51:02SPEAKER_03: So, um, you know, the spring game had it was fun.
- 51:04SPEAKER_03: I think uh, you know, the QB battle is still interesting.
- 51:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, some thought we would have a quarterback named by this moment.
- 51:12SPEAKER_03: We do not, and I think that is a testament to uh Baron Morton.
- 51:16SPEAKER_03: I think Tyler Shuck is the guy that uh the coaching staff wanted to name as the starter.
- 51:24SPEAKER_03: And I think because of the recent success that Barron Morton or Donovan Smith could have had in practice, is making that decision a lot tougher on the coaching staff, and they feel like they don't want to make a mistake with this.
- 51:37SPEAKER_03: And Barron Morton showed out in the spring game.
- 51:39SPEAKER_03: Tyler Shuck had the majority of snaps, the majority of throws, but you know, Donovan Smith even showed something he threw a touchdown in the second half.
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: I mean, this quarterback battle is raging on, and that's something that's great as a fan, and that's that's a good problem to have.
- 51:55SPEAKER_05: Um, and I think we're guilty of it as well.
- 51:57SPEAKER_05: I think we all assume that Tyler Shuck, okay.
- 51:58SPEAKER_05: I'm speaking for I say all, uh I assume that many, I'm sure many of us have assumed that Tyler Shuck was the guy until proven otherwise.
- 52:06SPEAKER_05: And this free game is a part of the proven otherwise.
- 52:08SPEAKER_05: I think Barron Morton, like you said, Barry Morton has made it interesting.
- 52:11SPEAKER_05: Um, it's just it's hard to argue with Tyler's experience, first and foremost, most importantly.
- 52:17SPEAKER_05: Um, and obviously his tangibles.
- 52:19SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's a talented kid, but all three of these guys are, especially Baron Morton, because you know he he's he's one of the highest recruits in our in our entire history.
- 52:27SPEAKER_05: So you you know that he's the the the the West Texas son who wants to get that job.
- 52:32SPEAKER_05: And I think I think we all kind of are rooting for him.
- 52:35SPEAKER_05: I think I think most of us want to see Baron Morton win the job just because it's a good story from the first and foremost.
- 52:41SPEAKER_03: Well, it also gives you that extra confidence that he is going to he is getting the nod over a Donovan Smith who basically carried our team the back half of the season during a coaching change, had a fantastic Liberty Bowl game, had a great Iowa State game, and a Tyler Shuck, who's a former four-star recruit, started at Oregon, won a Pac-12 championship in a weird year.
- 53:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, started and won three games at Texas Tech already.
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: So if the coaching staff does give Barron Morton that nod, it really shows they have confidence in that kid.
- 53:13SPEAKER_03: And I think we can all get behind it.
- 53:14SPEAKER_03: And of course, Eastland, West Texas grew up a tech fan, all that sort of stuff.
- 53:18SPEAKER_03: So um, yeah, I think that quarterback battle is raging on.
- 53:21SPEAKER_03: I don't think we're gonna get anybody till summer.
- 53:23SPEAKER_03: I think it's gonna be a little bit more.
- 53:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think I think it'll probably be before the game, like where the first game.
- 53:28SPEAKER_05: I don't think I don't think we'll know until like a few weeks out, honestly.
- 53:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 53:31SPEAKER_03: I think that might, yeah, they may want to get somebody, you know, enough time to where everybody gets you know cool with the idea and everything like that.
- 53:38SPEAKER_03: So uh not gonna happen soon, though, I think.
- 53:42SPEAKER_03: Um, we're gonna use running backs, man.
- 53:44SPEAKER_03: I know a lot of people are I know a lot of people are concerned about Zach Kitley's offense and uh you know the the the sheer amount of passing that he's done at both Houston Baptist and Western Kentucky these past couple seasons.
- 53:57SPEAKER_03: Uh, they didn't have running backs like what we have.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: Uh Taj Brooks looked fantastic.
- 54:01SPEAKER_03: Cameron Valdez looked great.
- 54:03SPEAKER_03: Sir Rodrick, like we said, did not play.
- 54:05SPEAKER_03: Uh, and even Blake Bedwell had a few great runs.
- 54:07SPEAKER_03: He's the transfer from SMU.
- 54:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, so we have four running backs right here that are gonna get some snaps next year.
- 54:13SPEAKER_03: Um, I'm excited for that room.
- 54:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, just wanted to hit on that.
- 54:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, wide receiver room, young overall, like we are saying, uh, but lots of chances for guys to step up and be that guy next year.
- 54:25SPEAKER_03: Uh, one of which is Duran Bradley, who has been talked up very highly uh in spring ball.
- 54:30SPEAKER_03: Brady Boyd had some great plays in the spring game.
- 54:32SPEAKER_03: I think he's going to be a real piece uh next year.
- 54:36SPEAKER_03: Jordan Brown was surprising.
- 54:37SPEAKER_03: He was the Kansas transfer, who I don't believe is on scholarship still.
- 54:41SPEAKER_03: Uh, he had some great plays.
- 54:43SPEAKER_03: He's quick, he's fast.
- 54:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then of course, you know, your your top guys, Miles Price, Mason Thorpe, those type of players.
- 54:49SPEAKER_03: But I think our wide receiver room is going to be interesting.
- 54:51SPEAKER_03: Do I have the most confidence in them?
- 54:53SPEAKER_03: Not necessarily, but they're young, a lot of room uh, you know, to uh to improve and and be good next year.
- 55:01SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, man.
- 55:02SPEAKER_05: And I I don't I don't mean to backtrack, but speaking of running backs, we just landed a huge commit as well, um, out of out of the out of the running back room there with LJ Martin out of El Paso, four star over uh over several big names.
- 55:14SPEAKER_05: So, man, it's just like you said, I just kind of wanted to reinforce the fact that we're gonna be using running backs there.
- 55:18SPEAKER_05: So it's great to see, man, at a school that is known for just flanging it around.
- 55:22SPEAKER_05: And I think people were expecting like you said, people are expecting with Zach Kitley to kind of be where you're returning to form with a high-powered throw-em game.
- 55:28SPEAKER_05: But dude, if you got these running, if you got the tools, you got to use your tools if you're gonna win.
- 55:32SPEAKER_05: So that's it's it's just good to see uh bad culture go from top to bottom, not just focusing on uh quarterbacks and wide receivers, like we saw under the Zach Kitley um uh offense when he was originally here.
- 55:42SPEAKER_03: For sure, for sure.
- 55:44SPEAKER_03: Um, secondary looks great.
- 55:46SPEAKER_03: Secondary looks great, and that's weird to say as a Texas Tech fan.
- 55:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, but you just look at these guys that we have on this team.
- 55:53SPEAKER_03: Reggie Pearson, Ray Shad Williams, Muddy Waters, Adrian Fry, Rabbit, Malik Dunlap, Tyler Owens, who's the Texas transfer, Cam Watts.
- 56:01SPEAKER_03: That's a stacked group right there of secondary.
- 56:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, safeties and corners, I think we're gonna be really good at that spot.
- 56:09SPEAKER_03: What did you just say?
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: I think we're going to have a good secondary.
- 56:13SPEAKER_05: Let's go, dude.
- 56:15SPEAKER_05: I think I think that out of every position group in all of Texas tech decade here, we we've uh we're like, can we please get a decent secondary?
- 56:22SPEAKER_05: So I I think I think I agree with you, man.
- 56:24SPEAKER_05: I think I think we're finally seeing a coaching staff that wants to fix our problems rather than just lean on the things we're good at too much.
- 56:30SPEAKER_05: So uh it's good to see, man.
- 56:32SPEAKER_05: I like seeing this become a more well-rounded team because it's been messing missing in West Texas for sure.
- 56:36SPEAKER_03: Yep, no doubt.
- 56:37SPEAKER_03: Um, O-line, a lot of guys miss the spring game.
- 56:40SPEAKER_03: Uh, a lot of guys miss spring overall due to either injuries or they still haven't gotten on campus yet.
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: So O-line looks shaky.
- 56:47SPEAKER_03: We have a lot of options, though.
- 56:49SPEAKER_03: I tell you what, we may not have a ton of talent, but we have a lot of options.
- 56:52SPEAKER_03: So we could throw a bunch of guys out there.
- 56:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, and and I believe in Coach Hambi to get this O-line looking right here in the coming years, and um, you know, at O line uh looking looking forward to it.
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: It can't get that much worse, you know what I'm saying?
- 57:06SPEAKER_05: Right, right, right.
- 57:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, dude, and I love I love Coach Hambi's fire, man.
- 57:10SPEAKER_05: Like he just seems like he's on fire all the time, and I love it.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: He's a dude's dude, you can tell.
- 57:16SPEAKER_05: He is, man.
- 57:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, those uh those mic'd up videos that tech football's putting out is awesome.
- 57:21SPEAKER_03: Um, I did just want to want to point out special teams kickers.
- 57:26SPEAKER_03: You know, we're losing a great one in John Garabay.
- 57:28SPEAKER_03: He's an all-timer here at tech, but man, both of these guys, Trey Wolf.
- 57:33SPEAKER_03: I know he had a bad 2020 season.
- 57:35SPEAKER_03: Uh, it was COVID, it was weird.
- 57:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, that can take a mental hit on you.
- 57:40SPEAKER_03: But the season prior, he was awesome at tech.
- 57:43SPEAKER_03: He hit a 56-yard field goal in the spring game.
- 57:46SPEAKER_03: I like our kickers.
- 57:47SPEAKER_03: We also have Gino Garcia, who's a transfer.
- 57:50SPEAKER_03: He's coming in.
- 57:50SPEAKER_03: He went two for two in the spring game, both from 40 plus.
- 57:54SPEAKER_03: So I'm excited about our special teams.
- 57:56SPEAKER_03: I'm excited, obviously, about our guy Austin SmackNamara, and then uh our kickers.
- 58:01SPEAKER_03: I think we're gonna be just fine.
- 58:03SPEAKER_05: And and Trey Wilf, uh, congrats on the wedding.
- 58:05SPEAKER_05: Congrats.
- 58:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I did see that got married, so congrats on getting hitched there.
- 58:09SPEAKER_05: So now that you've got the family, now let's go get some dubs.
- 58:13SPEAKER_05: Now let's go earn some some some wins for the for the fam.
- 58:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 58:18SPEAKER_03: So that's what I took from the spring game.
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, looking forward, we're now having a football hiatus for a while.
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: So maybe we just end it right there and then pick it back up, you know, once the fall gets around.
- 58:28SPEAKER_03: So um excited for recruiting as always.
- 58:31SPEAKER_03: Joey McGuire now picked up, I believe, his 98th recruit of the 2023 class.
- 58:36SPEAKER_05: Insanity, dude.
- 58:37SPEAKER_05: It's ridiculous.
- 58:38SPEAKER_05: 98?
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: No, I'm just kidding.
- 58:40SPEAKER_03: I was about to say, I was like, did you really what?
- 58:42SPEAKER_03: No, it's like 20, it's like 24.
- 58:44SPEAKER_05: In my in my mind, I was like, Yeah, I thought you were meant like 98 players.
- 58:48SPEAKER_05: I'm like, are you serious?
- 58:49SPEAKER_03: No, no, I think it's up to like it's up to like 24 or something.
- 58:53SPEAKER_05: It's every listener was like, Wow, he is that stupid.
- 58:57SPEAKER_05: He is that dumb.
- 58:58SPEAKER_05: And it's true, y'all.
- 58:59SPEAKER_05: I am.
- 59:00SPEAKER_03: You are, you are, but uh no, Joey McGuire has a crap ton of players signed on for 2023, uh, more than uh every other team in the nation right now.
- 59:13SPEAKER_03: Uh it's stupid, it's ridiculous.
- 59:15SPEAKER_03: His recruiting is great.
- 59:16SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, do you have anything else on football?
- 59:19SPEAKER_05: Dude, no, I think that'll cover it for now, man.
- 59:22SPEAKER_05: And uh very soon it's gonna start picking up a lot of steam in the midsummer, which is when you really start getting excited about it again.
- 59:28SPEAKER_05: So I'm excited to uh actually have a new era to look forward to, man.
- 59:32SPEAKER_05: It's none of this trying to convince ourselves it'll be different.
- 59:34SPEAKER_05: Now we can it actually will be different whether we like it or not.
- 59:37SPEAKER_05: Whether it's good, different or not, we'll see.
- 59:39SPEAKER_05: So but I have very high hopes for it.
- 59:41SPEAKER_03: All right, man.
- 59:42SPEAKER_03: This may be a part two or going on here.
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: We talked a long time about Texas Tech, but we had a lot to talk about with transfer portal, basketball, uh, all that kind of stuff.
- 59:51SPEAKER_03: So um, part two of this podcast is going to be with our buddy Travis talking some Iowa State, talking some new Big 12, like we did with our buddy Joe last week.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: Um, and we're just gonna get an Iowa State Cyclone perspective on everything.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_03: So uh excited to talk to him and uh you know look forward to part two.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_05: Now, hear the song of the week, you have to go over that one.
