Transcript
- 0:00Hello there. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:02of Faction Motorsports After Hours podcast.
- 0:05On tonight's episode we have John from Goopy Performance.
- 0:11Goopy Performance is located in Have A Straw, New York and was
- 0:14established in 2001. Goopy Performance works on
- 0:18Rotary engines. He is primarily a machine shop,
- 0:21but we'll also do other things here and there.
- 0:25But for the most part, he's not taking, you know, he's not
- 0:27disassembling your RX7. At a shop he's just working on
- 0:30your engine Goopy performance started out by making Rotary
- 0:34parts, performance parts and then slowly became what it is
- 0:39today, which is basically anything and everything Rotary
- 0:42engine. Please check them out.
- 0:45We have all of his information in the show notes on this
- 0:47episode, so check out his Instagram, Facebook, and
- 0:51website. If you need any Rotary parts,
- 0:53make sure to hit them up. And that's it.
- 0:56We enjoyed this one. This was we.
- 0:58We got a lot of information about Rotaries on this episode.
- 1:00We didn't know anything before this, so enjoy.

- 1:45company specializing in paint protection, film, vehicle wraps,
- 1:48ceramic coatings and window tinting.
- 1:50Located in Fairlawn, New Jersey. Owned and operated by car
- 1:53enthusiasts and Drifters, their technicians have over 10 years
- 1:57of experience in the industry. The ceramic coating is what
- 2:00really caught my attention when they reached out to us.
- 2:02This coating basically gives your cars paint extra UV
- 2:05protection while also making it shine.
- 2:08Wax only lasts for a couple weeks at most, but ceramic
- 2:10coating lasts for a year or longer.
- 2:13They perform a full two stage Polish to the car beforehand to
- 2:16make sure the vehicle is in perfect condition before buying
- 2:19the coating. As mentioned, they also offer
- 2:21window tinting and paint protection film installations.
- 2:25Now everyone knows what window tinting is, but these guys offer
- 2:28carbon or ceramic tinting depending on your goals with the
- 2:31vehicle. Paint protection film or PPF is
- 2:34a great idea for those new vehicle owners that don't want
- 2:37to get stuck behind an 18 Wheeler on the way home one
- 2:39night. And then get out and realize
- 2:41your front end is littered with rock chips.
- 2:43I'm looking at you Subaru owners.
- 2:45Paint sucks so make sure you protect it fast before you
- 2:48regret it and need a new paint job.
- 2:50Also keep in mind they are capable of getting liveries
- 2:52designed and installed as well as full vehicle wraps.
- 2:56From protecting your toe rigs exterior to full livery
- 2:59installations on your drift car, they have you covered.

- 3:19After Hours podcast. Thank you so much for waiting.
- 3:23Again, This is a functioning shop, so we're not far off from
- 3:266:30, just about an hour. I said 6:30 and Malcolm yelled
- 3:29at me and said. It's not gonna be 6:30.
- 3:31I said. It's gonna be 6.
- 3:33Yeah. No.
- 3:34Sorry, Malcolm. But yeah, we're here to bring
- 3:36you another episode. We have another guest.
- 3:39We have Jonathan of Goopy Performance, a Rotary specialty
- 3:44shop. And yeah.
- 3:48Thank you for coming on the podcast.
- 3:49Thank you. Thank you for having me.
- 3:52Goopy legend, right? Yeah, for real.
- 3:54We're gonna call you goopy, he said.
- 3:56Yeah, Yes. That was my nickname, so you
- 3:58could go. Ahead.
- 3:58Yeah. Can we just started off with
- 4:00that? Why goopy?
- 4:01How did this start? Yeah.
- 4:02Why is your name goopy? Don't, don't, don't tell me it's
- 4:05something weird. No, no, no, no.
- 4:07Goopy is my Is that goopy was my.
- 4:09It's actually cu P. Y.
- 4:12That was my nickname in Spanish, so people used to call me coopy
- 4:15in Spanish and. And and then the the IT sounds
- 4:20kind of awkward in English. So one day we just said, hey,
- 4:22let's call my call me goopy, so everybody just call me.
- 4:25Goopy. So it came from your nickname?
- 4:27Yeah, that's my nickname. So when we started my business
- 4:29of making my parts, I was thinking, OK, So what should we
- 4:34name our parts? And I looked online and or you
- 4:37know, back then there was no online and it was like looked in
- 4:39the magazines and you had everybody from BZD and all the
- 4:42different alphabet. Yeah.
- 4:45You know names for. Heart brands.
- 4:46And I said, damn, I can't find, I need a name for my business.
- 4:49I have so many questions and I just said, you know.
- 4:51What? Who spells it with a G cuz it
- 4:52went from C to G? Right, cuz it just doesn't sound
- 4:55right in English when you say Kuppi.
- 4:57So yeah, you can think of Kuppi petals from BMX back in the day.
- 5:01So I just said let me just call myself Kuppi.
- 5:03Yeah, I like the name. It's very memorable because.
- 5:09For example, a coworker of mine. I don't know a lot about Rotary.
- 5:11This is the first time we, me and you have met.
- 5:13Yeah, first time we had any Rotary people on.
- 5:15Here but yet. But yet.
- 5:16I have friends who've gone. You I have friend named Angel He
- 5:19I think you might have built an engine for him or something.
- 5:21Like that. Yeah, and a buddy and my
- 5:23coworker is trying to get an RX8 and I'm like, dude, OK that this
- 5:27shop called Goopy, that's where you go.
- 5:29And that's one of the reasons why I used the name goopy,
- 5:31because I said OK even if someone doesn't know how to.
- 5:34Spell it or it sounds awkward. It's a catchy phrase and for
- 5:37marketing, it actually works. It works.
- 5:39It works. You guys do got me interested.
- 5:41I was like, what is goop you? You have to work harder to
- 5:43actually say the name and think about, you know, even my my
- 5:46decal, if you look at my logo, my logo says GO and then one of
- 5:50the O's is a rotor and then PY and most people are like, what
- 5:53does that say? What does that say?
- 5:55And then they study it. But little do they know their
- 5:56brain is being programmed to like remember my name.
- 5:58That just says Go Rotary people or.
- 6:00Whatever, but you know. It works.
- 6:03I like it. When did you start?
- 6:06We started Gooby performance started in 2000 and one 2001.
- 6:11In 2001 we started with. We designed an Apex Seal.
- 6:15We manufactured Apex Seal and that was my.
- 6:17I think I saw that on your website as well.
- 6:19That's what, that's what I used to spearhead my business.
- 6:22That's what I was known for and that's what I started with.
- 6:25You know, I remember I used to work in software prior to that
- 6:28and you know things would start going down after 911 and.
- 6:33And my business partner and I at the time said, hey, listen,
- 6:36let's just take all the technology, some financing that
- 6:39we had and all the resources that we had and what we were
- 6:41doing prior and let's just make our own Apex Seal.
- 6:44It took almost two years, 2 1/2 years, a little bit more.
- 6:47And then we went back and forth and 2001 and here we are today.
- 6:52That's kind of crazy to me. Not a lot of.
- 6:55That's not really like the first step that somebody takes.
- 6:59Yeah, you must have been pretty passionate.
- 7:00About, Yeah, like. You must have already.
- 7:02I was a Rotary guy and I had an RX7 that I used to drag and one
- 7:06time I went we went racing in Lebanon Valley.
- 7:09I remember I broke an apex seal and the apex it was a factory
- 7:12seal. It was a nitrous car and it
- 7:13ruined the housing and and I was like, Oh my God, cuz the Apex
- 7:16Seals, some people call them vein Seals, they're inside the
- 7:19engine, right? That's it.
- 7:20That's like the main thing, the. Achilles tendon, they would say,
- 7:24right? That's what builds compression.
- 7:25And so that broke the original. The OEM unit broke, caused a lot
- 7:30of damage on the inside and it hurt me.
- 7:33It hurt me financially. I was like, my God, this is
- 7:36killer. And I remember and I made
- 7:39software for. Were translating CAD files in
- 7:43the 90s. That's what we sold.
- 7:45That's what I already. Shit.
- 7:46Dog you were. A probably a genius considered a
- 7:49genius. So in the 90s and in the early
- 7:512000s, if you had AutoCAD and you had Pro E or Katia or one of
- 7:56the other CAD softwares, right, Pro engineer, whatever.
- 7:59I don't even know if they're around anymore.
- 8:00I think they still use CAD and more like they do, but.
- 8:03I don't know if those brands are there.
- 8:04OK, so say you had pro engineer and you designed the 3D file
- 8:08and. Model in dot prt extension and
- 8:11you emailed it to somebody and they didn't have pro engineer,
- 8:13they couldn't open the file. So we had a software that I used
- 8:17to work for that we used to sell.
- 8:18They used to sell the software that allowed you to install the
- 8:20software and then open up 3D files and 2D files from a CAS
- 8:24software that you didn't own. It wouldn't allow you to edit
- 8:27the file but you could at least access.
- 8:29It so your goal with the software was cross
- 8:31compatibility. Yeah, that's correct.
- 8:33Pretty much. That's correct.
- 8:34That's good. And it's 90s.
- 8:36Yeah. So I'm.
- 8:37Selling. Software and I was selling
- 8:39software to engineers, casters, investment casting, CNC shops
- 8:44and. Bill Gates.
- 8:46No people manufacturing stuff, right in the job shop world.
- 8:51And then I actually got to meet a lot of engineers from every
- 8:53aspect, solid modelers and designers and whatnot.
- 8:57So I learned the entire manufacturing world from the
- 8:59sales perspective. So I took that ability and made
- 9:02my own apex. My God.
- 9:04That is fucking. I didn't know.
- 9:05That was an engineer. By trade, nor a machinist.
- 9:07Later on I bought mills and ladies and that sort of stuff
- 9:09and I had to kind of self teach myself.
- 9:11But yeah, so but we, you know we hired A metallurgist.
- 9:14He worked with us. He was the old fellow that
- 9:17worked with SKF for about 20 years, 25 years and then another
- 9:21company and thinking and he had retired and then he wanted to
- 9:24work with us. He had connects with connections
- 9:28with. Like Carpenter Steels and a few
- 9:30other people, he got us into the right people and it worked well.
- 9:34So you make this apex here. What was different about your?
- 9:37Apex. I was just about to ask that you
- 9:39sly bitch. Yeah.
- 9:41I would try to keep the mic close.
- 9:42So if you guys don't know, you can.
- 9:44Move it. Whatever.
- 9:44In the 90s there was very few people that made aftermarket
- 9:48Apex seals or even parts for Rotary engines.
- 9:50In the 90s there was very little aftermarket.
- 9:53So pretty much you're dealing with, you're dealing with Mazda.
- 9:55Apex. Seals, that's why, you know
- 9:56sometimes you'll buy a JDM 13B or 12A or I mean the 13B or and
- 10:00you'll see like extra injectors on this because in the early
- 10:03days there was like no aftermarket Ecu's or no big
- 10:06injectors like there is today. Yeah, all you had is original
- 10:09equipment stuff. So people just added another
- 10:11injector. So that was very limited as far
- 10:13as aftermarket stuff. Yeah, so then what we did is so
- 10:16then there was very, so it was very little.
- 10:19So then we said, hey, we got to come up with an Apex seal that
- 10:23that. That it's more of a consumable.
- 10:25You buy it, you use it. If it bends, it bends.
- 10:27If it wears out, it wears out. Whatever, But let it not break
- 10:29it cause catastrophic damage on the inside.
- 10:32You take the engine apart, you replace it, and down the road
- 10:34you go. Oh, that's like a big game
- 10:39changer. Yeah.
- 10:40Wow. So that.
- 10:43Wow. Now that's.
- 10:45To me, to the average consumer, that's me.
- 10:48And like everybody else was trying to get in a Rotary.
- 10:50You just provided like a godsend.
- 10:52That was what I started with, yeah, so that's I said to myself
- 10:55and my business partner all the time, Jack, he lived here in
- 10:58Jersey and he came out of the manufacturing world.
- 11:00When I started working with him in software in the sales
- 11:04business, he had already done rapid prototyping and he had
- 11:07worked with solid modeling and all the stuff from.
- 11:12Big companies Lockheed Martin and Nike and Saab GM.
- 11:17You know, so he was. He was real smart, dude.
- 11:20It started with, I think, McDonnell Douglas in the late
- 11:2470s and stuff like that. So I had good mentors, good
- 11:27mentors, and I was like shadowing these guys all the
- 11:29time. And I was like, wow, these guys
- 11:30are bright individuals and I'm here coming out of Ramapo
- 11:32College. With a degree in poli sci and
- 11:35stuff, and I'm over here. I'm just and I just wanted to
- 11:37sell software. So I had to learn the
- 11:39engineering world, the lingo, the terminology and everything,
- 11:42just to sell the software and then using the actual software
- 11:45later on to design my own parts. Yeah, now, now you were going to
- 11:49school and you graduated and you got into your career then and
- 11:53then you got. Yes, I was senior year Ramapo
- 11:55College and like in the 90s I was senior year Ramapo College
- 11:59and. I got hired selling the
- 12:02software. It was like 100 credits, like 20
- 12:05short of my BA or whatever. Yeah, I just quit school and I
- 12:08just started working and I said the heck with this and I just
- 12:10started working and that's it and.
- 12:11Then, well, I mean, that's the goal anyway, right?
- 12:13Trying to get a job in that field, so.
- 12:16The The thing is is like right now, like it's harder for kids
- 12:20to make that decision because like some, when you make that
- 12:23decision now, you won't have that degree.
- 12:25And there's jobs out there where that's literally the bare
- 12:28requirement. They won't even look at anything
- 12:29else. I'll just be like you don't have
- 12:31a degree you can't apply, but that person could have so many
- 12:34skills that are applicable to that one position.
- 12:36So like how many years did you end up selling software?
- 12:41I don't know, three years 4. Years, three years, four years
- 12:42before you were like, yeah, I need to do more.
- 12:45Yeah, we were traveling. No, not that.
- 12:48But the company we were working with selling software for
- 12:50started. They cut us off and they said
- 12:53we're gonna bring software in house in California and all the
- 12:56sales guys. So then we were a VAR here in
- 12:58Ridgewood, NJ so. They kind of, they didn't need
- 13:01us. Little by little they started
- 13:02cutting off our accounts. So, you know, it just, it
- 13:05started drying up. So yeah, so let's try something
- 13:08else with, let's do something else with the abilities that we
- 13:10had with the skill sets that we had at the time.
- 13:12Frankie Avar is a value added reseller, right?
- 13:14Right. Wait, what?
- 13:16A var, that's what he just called it.
- 13:18It's a value, added Reseller. What the hell is that?
- 13:20It's the product. You guys help sell the product
- 13:24and they add the value by reselling it VAR.
- 13:28You're welcome. I'm still lost.
- 13:30We'll talk about it. Later, you're technically a var.
- 13:33I've never, yeah, I've never heard that, that term before.
- 13:37On paper, you're technically yeah.
- 13:38So if you're selling something for somebody, yeah, you are a
- 13:40VAR. Yeah, but yeah.
- 13:44So when you designed the Apex Seal and stuff like that, what
- 13:48was the process like talking to? You mentioned a metallurgist,
- 13:51right? Not everybody talks to a
- 13:53metallurgist, yes. Yeah, what the fuck.
- 13:55That's sad. It's a cool process, like.
- 13:57We had that worked with us for about. 10 years actually longer
- 14:01than he recently passed away last year, you know and then and
- 14:06he was a brilliant individual. He was really smart.
- 14:09It was he has, he had a lot of years of experience.
- 14:11He used to fly back and forth overseas and I think the one of
- 14:14the reasons he retired is because it's back her from you
- 14:16know these intercontinental flights and that sort of stuff.
- 14:19So with me I just had to bring him, I had to bring him all the
- 14:22variables. This is what's going on blah,
- 14:25blah, blah and. This is the issues we're seeing.
- 14:27And then so I had to use my. Limited ability to.
- 14:32Communicate in that world and give him as much information.
- 14:35And then he went from there, Yeah, And then he said, okay,
- 14:37let's try this material, try that material, try that.
- 14:39We tried about a dozen different.
- 14:41Materials, Yeah. What was the like?
- 14:42Yeah, what was it? What was like the like, how the
- 14:46fuck do you even? Like how many Apex deals did you
- 14:48go? I know.
- 14:49I'm trying to think like it was interesting testing that it was.
- 14:52Interesting because it was, you know, it was it was hard, you
- 14:54know this is 20 something years ago, you know, it was it was
- 14:57challenging. Yeah, time of my life I went
- 14:58through a lot of stress. You know, we draining or Piggy
- 15:00Bank. And it was.
- 15:02It was. Difficult.
- 15:03I remember. You know, we'd come up with one
- 15:05material. OK, let's make let's try this
- 15:08material. Who can make it?
- 15:09Who can machine it? OK, let's try.
- 15:11Let's make one. OK, this seemed to work well,
- 15:13so. Let's make these in volume.
- 15:15Oh, it's not feasible. We have to do this type of heat
- 15:18tree and blah blah. It was challenging.
- 15:20And you still had a job at that point?
- 15:22Yes, yes, yes. We're still selling software.
- 15:23Now the thing we're testing, you know, we tried one.
- 15:26I'd put it in an engine. I'd have to drive a few 100
- 15:29miles to see how it if it broke in, if it, you know, if it made
- 15:32good vacuum and then take it back out, send it back to the
- 15:35lab, look at it and make it. OK, this will work great.
- 15:38Let's try heat #2. Let's go to this one.
- 15:40Holy fuck, you're doing your own.
- 15:43R&D on the road, yes. Yes, yes.
- 15:45While you're. Working.
- 15:46Even have a car registered. So it sucked.
- 15:48I was like, Oh my God, I got to put miles on this apex.
- 15:50How am I going to do it? So then I remember my friend
- 15:52Willie Maldonado. He's like, you use my car.
- 15:55I got insurance on it. All right, no problem.
- 15:56Let me borrow this first Gen. I would throw a motor in there.
- 15:58I was done. I got 11 that night and I was
- 16:01like, OK, turns on my little brother used to help me Elias.
- 16:03And I mean, I got to go put some miles on this cuz I got to take
- 16:06this motor back out in three days.
- 16:07And and that night, you know, I get in and put gas in and drive
- 16:10all the way up. New Haven up 95 back down.
- 16:13Come home the next day I had like 300 miles.
- 16:15OK, take the motor back out, send it to the lab, check the
- 16:17radius, check you know the see if expanded, check the
- 16:20materials, go back to do some testing and Oh my God.
- 16:23So I went through that for, you know, almost three years 3.
- 16:26Years. That is some damn impressive
- 16:28stuff, dude. Yes, it was a.
- 16:30Bitch like hats off to you. Very much respected. 20 years
- 16:33ago, you know Now this is all our own unique stuff we didn't
- 16:35copy. Anybody.
- 16:36That's the part that's difficult.
- 16:38Unique stuff, you know? My, my, the metallurgist we were
- 16:40working with, he was like. It was like straight as an
- 16:43arrow, you know, You know, I don't do anything unethical, You
- 16:46know, we're going to design our own stuff testing, you know, he
- 16:50was like old school, old school dude, bro, he's you don't find
- 16:53guys like that anymore. And then so, but today you can't
- 16:56say the same today. Today everybody's copying
- 16:58everybody's stuff, you know what I mean?
- 16:59So. Yeah, I feel like I was going to
- 17:02ask this, but now we're kind of talking about it.
- 17:03But over the years, did it get become easier to be able to
- 17:08produce? Arts.
- 17:10A. Little bit like the access to
- 17:12like. I don't know how did you even
- 17:15find this metallurgist? He worked.
- 17:18I don't know, he was friends with somebody else.
- 17:20We met at a job shop show. We used to do a lot of trade
- 17:22shows like Jacob Javits, the Design Manufacturing Show and
- 17:26Jacob Javits and all the job shop shows they have down here
- 17:29at the Meadowlands and stuff where all the trade shows come
- 17:31in and. People that do EDM and machining
- 17:35and all casting and all sorts of stuff, so we had a lot of
- 17:37contacts in that world. That world is.
- 17:39Small, but at the same time each a lot of people know each other.
- 17:41Yeah, I'm not. In that world as much anymore.
- 17:44But when I was selling software, I got to meet a lot of cool
- 17:46people. So nowadays, I feel like with
- 17:48the amount of exposure that you can have on one channel, let's
- 17:51say it's Instagram, right, you put a story.
- 17:53I'm looking for a metallurgist. I'm sure somebody knows somebody
- 17:58who knows somebody. Yeah.
- 17:59Yeah. Versus before where you had to
- 18:01like. You had to make that, Yeah.
- 18:02There was no social media. Yeah, right, EarthLink,
- 18:05Remember, dial up and wait. Yeah.
- 18:07Connection and stuff it. Was Internet in 2001?
- 18:09Yes. It was I was 6 so.
- 18:12Forums were probably a thing. It was, yeah, the forums, I
- 18:16don't know, were there forums? Yeah, I think there were.
- 18:18There was like RX7 Club and stuff like that and finger,
- 18:21everybody typing with one finger and.
- 18:22Stuff like that. Dude.
- 18:23If you could type like this back then, you were God, yeah.
- 18:27You could exactly. Everybody was one finger, 2
- 18:29fingers, like this one. And you had typing class.
- 18:32I wonder if you ever had to take typing class.
- 18:34Frankie. Did they have?
- 18:34Yes. Typing class for you?
- 18:35Yes. Where they made you like like we
- 18:38had this librarian in high school that she would get mad if
- 18:41you are not. Hold on back.
- 18:42Straight back, straight foot planted and your your wrists had
- 18:46to be like. Kind of.
- 18:47Can people hear us online? Yes.
- 18:48OK. Yes, OK, yeah, for sure Jordan,
- 18:52it says. It says Jordan has no audio, but
- 18:55no one else has complained. So let us know in the chat if
- 18:57ever there is no audio and we will.
- 18:59And by we, I mean Malcolm. Here anything at 7:10.
- 19:02OK, well. That was because we had them all
- 19:04here. Fucking.
- 19:04Around. So, so how did you get into
- 19:07Rotary? OK, did you have that first?
- 19:09What happened is I was already a gear head to begin with, right?
- 19:11OK, I was already Where did I start with, right?
- 19:13Since the early 90s, I was already a car guy.
- 19:16So when we designed our own Apex Seals, that was a way to me for
- 19:19me to start a new venture in life, a new business, a new
- 19:22idea. Was it always Rotary?
- 19:23Though yeah, I was always a Rotary guy for the most part
- 19:26since I was a kid, and then that.
- 19:29So we made these Apex seal and you know it was 2-3 years.
- 19:32I would go to Puerto Rico a lot and do testing in Puerto Rico.
- 19:34And I had a buddy of mine in Puerto Rico.
- 19:36I said in parts 2 and I said hey be thing Israel's name was, hey
- 19:39try this out, try this one, try that one.
- 19:40OK, I tried this one. This one worked pretty good.
- 19:42This one didn't work. One of the Apex seals, the first
- 19:45one, the one we were working on for many years, we found the
- 19:48patent for that. We filed a patent on that, you
- 19:50know in 2003 and that apex seal will yield 1,000,000 miles.
- 19:56We think we Apex would yield 1,000,000 miles.
- 19:59That's not what we're sending now.
- 20:00Depending on the abuse, but. No, that would yield 1,000,000
- 20:03miles. It just wasn't feasible.
- 20:04It was very expensive. It was challenging.
- 20:07That's what we did file a patent for it and then that material.
- 20:10So the technology is out there. To do almost anything you wanna.
- 20:14This is just how much money you're willing to spend.
- 20:16I. Was gonna say but there's that
- 20:17means there's it's just God Mode apex.
- 20:19Right. It was just expensive.
- 20:20We didn't have to sell it for 1500 bucks a set.
- 20:22And people aren't buying $1500 Apex.
- 20:24That's just six seals. Yeah, that's just six seals.
- 20:28Yeah. How much is a normal, how much
- 20:29are you guys selling your? Apex what is it like 350 bucks I
- 20:32think for set that's. That doesn't seem that.
- 20:34And then it's A and again it's a replacement.
- 20:36Consumable. Yeah, it's a consumable.
- 20:38And that's the idea. The idea is, hey, listen, I
- 20:39messed up. I leaned out.
- 20:41Whatever the issue is, let's replace it.
- 20:43Pop another one in and down the road.
- 20:44We can, but it doesn't destroy the.
- 20:46That's the idea. So the impetus behind making the
- 20:49apex seals was that the original equipment mozzed the stuff.
- 20:52When they would break, they would damage the rotor housings
- 20:54on the inside, and if they came out, the exhaust and damaged the
- 20:56turbo. And now you have bit more calls.
- 20:58Oh my God. So that was the.
- 21:00Issue with all the Rotary. Guys in the 90s and in the early
- 21:022000s, so all the early 90s and 2000s guys were tuning and that
- 21:06were building engines. They had to be extra precise and
- 21:09you know, real, real careful with everything they had.
- 21:12They didn't have a second choice.
- 21:13You know, if you broke an apex, it was, ah, man, I got another
- 21:16engine, a housing. And a turbo.
- 21:18Turbo Blue Yeah, so you know, but.
- 21:20So you took three years and then you said you pretty much came.
- 21:24You came to a conclusion with. Yes.
- 21:27Was that the God one or was that like the?
- 21:29No, that was more. Feasible.
- 21:30What we have now, it works very well.
- 21:32Works very well. And you know we I went to I had
- 21:34a lot of dealers in Puerto Rico. I went to California 7 stock.
- 21:38I did trade shows in seminars in Montreal.
- 21:41I didn't guys didn't even speak English.
- 21:43They had a French translator. I went to Guatemala.
- 21:45Did 2 seminars in Guatemala. And had a all these guys there
- 21:50and can you show us your brand, help us build engines and stuff?
- 21:53Like. Rico The fuck that's see a lot
- 21:56of different. Places I've been through, I've
- 21:59been through the ringer, man. You.
- 22:00Probably know that engine like the back of your hand.
- 22:02And that's what happens. So a lot of people that wanted
- 22:05to buy our brand. So you know, if anybody out
- 22:07there nowadays wants to make something for one particular
- 22:09car, I when I went to speed shops in Puerto Rico, they were
- 22:13like, OK, these are good apexels.
- 22:14Thank you, son. You know, you show them the
- 22:15piece of paper this is. They'll withstand this
- 22:18temperature, this work characteristics.
- 22:20These are how good they are. And they would look at you and
- 22:23be like, yeah, OK, give me them. Let me try to make my car.
- 22:25If they work, I'll buy them. If they don't work, I don't buy
- 22:27them. That's just how people speak,
- 22:29old school guys think. They wanna see it.
- 22:31So I had to put them in this car and that car and this car.
- 22:34So I gave a lot of. I had a lot of guys using my
- 22:36brand in early days, but it was just challenging.
- 22:38So then it actually forced me to actually work on rotaries and
- 22:43build my own engines and. Eventually what we have today
- 22:46because folks were like, hey listen, you know, I had guys
- 22:49come and say, hey, that's great, but can you build my engine?
- 22:51And I was like, OK, well in between selling parts I could
- 22:53build an engine and I. Was about to ask, is that what
- 22:56your shop now? Is that service you offer?
- 22:59Yes, full motor. Shop, yes, yes.
- 23:01We don't work on cars so much. I just don't have the space and
- 23:03the manpower, but we do blocks. So as opposed to most guys,
- 23:06let's let's say rod mill in and let's say some of the, you know
- 23:11like. From Erelbrock, Vic Erelbrock
- 23:14and some of the other guys, if you see their business
- 23:17platforms, most of those guys were racers, started racing,
- 23:20started, you know, they racing, had shops and stuff, and then
- 23:24they designed parts. I did it kind of backwards.
- 23:28I designed the part. I, yeah, made a part.
- 23:30And then I had to go back and build a shop around the part
- 23:33because everybody's like, hey, you know, why don't you just
- 23:35build it for me? And you know, here in the
- 23:36tri-state area, there was a lot of dealers here in the early
- 23:392000s. There was a lot of shops around
- 23:41here that did a lot of Rotary work.
- 23:42And but it was challenging you know you wanted people were hey
- 23:45can you build my engine? So I.
- 23:46Feel like I only knew one Rotary shop for the last 10 years.
- 23:49Who is it? I don't know.
- 23:50It was. I think they were in South
- 23:52Jersey or something. No, there's always been Rotary
- 23:55shops. I think what has happened over
- 23:57the last, you know, 25 years is, you know.
- 24:00Generations have come, have gone, Some guys have retired and
- 24:03you got the new guys coming in. Yeah, I feel like there's not
- 24:06many nowadays. Right there is that.
- 24:08You gotta know who sue. A lot of guys.
- 24:10This guy will build a few engines.
- 24:11That guy builds a few engines. As far as a shop that you can go
- 24:14to Turnkey that just specializes on that, right?
- 24:17There isn't too many of those. Yeah, I mean that is pretty
- 24:19crazy. And you only specialize in
- 24:21rotaries. I mean, those shops do exist.
- 24:23Now I just now that I know that that that Achilles.
- 24:28Of the Rotary, the apex seal right.
- 24:30You make a consumable 1 now. Yeah, I want.
- 24:33I'm interested in the God. One what's what's for stopping
- 24:35me from like let's say let's say you are let, let's say I'm that
- 24:38consumer, I blow my shit up. I'm going to take that thing
- 24:41apart. I think I'm I can take, I'm, I'm
- 24:43OK with my hands. I can disassemble an engine to
- 24:46an extent and I feel. Like it's got no Pistons and
- 24:48rods so. I think that's the coolest part
- 24:50about it, but also the what people I feel like are
- 24:52intimidated by. Well, yeah, because it's not.
- 24:55Normal per se. Yeah, Well, was your first car a
- 24:57Rotary? No, my first car.
- 24:59I remember the first car I ever bought was a Volkswagen Beetle
- 25:0473 Super Beetle. Oh my.
- 25:05My dad had like, a good gillion of those.
- 25:07Super. Beetle had the fiberglass flares
- 25:10on it. I think I bought it for like 50
- 25:11bucks. That's what, 50 bucks?
- 25:13No. I see.
- 25:14You know, my dad would tell me this. 50 bucks and you?
- 25:16Just buy a shit load. Of guy Mike McMahon sold it to
- 25:19me. He had a balloon clutch and he
- 25:20had it. The shop down and have a straw
- 25:22just junked there. I was like, yo, what you want?
- 25:24He's like, give me $50. Why is it always at a junkyard
- 25:28too like? That somebody shot, but they
- 25:29were gonna junk it. It was a super three.
- 25:30It was a 1.86373 Super Beetle fiberglass flares and
- 25:35everything. Yeah.
- 25:36And then I remember had a gauges on the you know the auto meter
- 25:39gauges and and I remember. I So what is a Super Beetle?
- 25:42Is it Turbo? What is it?
- 25:44It's just a beetle. It was just called the Super
- 25:45Beetle. I don't know why it was called
- 25:46the Super Beetle. It had the bigger engine.
- 25:47I think the 1.8 or something. One point, I don't know.
- 25:51It's just super. And what else do you need to
- 25:53know about it? So that was.
- 25:54Burning. Smell like Clutch and I.
- 25:57Remember And they had the cable clutches right?
- 25:58Or. Something.
- 25:59Yeah. And I remember I went and bought
- 26:00some parts for it at Rapid Parts.
- 26:02Rapid parts used to be in Muncie, New York, and they sold
- 26:04just Volkswagen stuff. They're all gone now.
- 26:07I. Wonder if my dad knows about
- 26:08that. I'm.
- 26:09They sold brand new Fenders, doors, everything for
- 26:12Volkswagens, everything Volkswagen.
- 26:14And then I took some of the parts home.
- 26:16And before I started messing with the car, my brother's like,
- 26:18hey, you want to put Sally and sold them for 150 bucks.
- 26:21So I made like made $100 in one day.
- 26:25And then what? Yeah, so then.
- 26:27I sold that and then I bought an RX7.
- 26:29That. So the next step was the.
- 26:30R1 or something 91 maybe 92. I bought an RX7 FC for like 125
- 26:35bucks. No an FB like FB.
- 26:37Oh like 1081. Had a busted tie right in.
- 26:40Put a phony plate you know drove it home.
- 26:42My dad following me and and you know we made it home and.
- 26:46And I had to put a new strut on it.
- 26:48And so you're gonna have to educate me right now, because
- 26:50all I know is FC and FD. That's an FB out.
- 26:52There first Gen. first Gen. that's called the first Gen.
- 26:55OK. So the one outside that you
- 26:56brought. 1st Gen. 1978 to 1985 first Gen. they're practically
- 27:00the same unibody and stuff like that, and they're. 7879 had two
- 27:04tail lights in the back. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:06The 8485 GSL, the C, which people call the five letters
- 27:09Cinco letter, would have the 13B fuel injection with a
- 27:13distributor. Cinco letter bro.
- 27:15Yes, Cinco Letter. You guys don't have nothing cool
- 27:17in Sr. and Jayz world. Make some.
- 27:19Make some cooler acronyms. We got a, we got a black top,
- 27:22they got a. Cinco letter over here.
- 27:23It's just sick, which is? We got to see one up close,
- 27:26which is. I didn't even know that that was
- 27:28a model that existed. Yes, I thought it was strictly
- 27:3112A in the FB, No, no. And then that people would put
- 27:34theirs. They.
- 27:35Did have 12A cells, so most of them did have 12A from 78 to 85.
- 27:39The majority of of them had 12. A 85.
- 27:41The one you've seen outside. That's a rare model.
- 27:43Did you like the 12A? I'm assuming the one you had
- 27:45was. That a 12.
- 27:46A. So other than the .1 liter
- 27:49difference, what? What's the difference between a
- 27:5112A and a 13? B Well, the 12A has.
- 27:54The 12A is. You wanna know the difference?
- 27:57Yeah, yeah. Let's get into it.
- 27:58Come on. The 12A is one point considered
- 28:011.1. The a little different.
- 28:04Yeah the 13 B is 1.3 liter 1.2 for the 12A at 1200 and then
- 28:091300 and then the 12A housings are 70 millimeter.
- 28:13The 13 B are 80 millimeters. In inches of three inch, 150,000
- 28:18if you want to be exact. Just to so then increase the
- 28:21size of the. Right of the width the rotors.
- 28:24So the mass of the rotor is what you're kind of being.
- 28:26Wider in this orientation, wider.
- 28:28Which in turn would make more. It's it's a bigger motor.
- 28:31Or go heavier, you know so and then the 12A, you know
- 28:34throughout the years have different chambers, the
- 28:36compression chamber, somewhere long gated, shorter.
- 28:39I think Mazda played over the years with different elongating
- 28:43the the, the compression dish. Have you ever heard Frankie?
- 28:47Have you ever heard it? You probably heard a 12A, but it
- 28:50sounds a lot different. Really.
- 28:51I've never really heard. When you when I heard a 12A,
- 28:54that was like built NA oh, I mean.
- 28:56I probably heard. One like, super freaking.
- 28:58I don't even know. When you see it, it looks looks
- 28:59so weird because you're like, what is that?
- 29:02Yeah. No, I don't.
- 29:02Think it has like the two stacks coming out, the freaking top.
- 29:06I'm just, I'm like, I'm like 12A13B.
- 29:09You couldn't jump to like a 15-B.
- 29:11Like why didn't they do that? They didn't.
- 29:12Want to I don't know. Mazda had.
- 29:14I'm bitches. Take these off.
- 29:15Yeah, yeah, Mazda did. Have a bunch of different like
- 29:19prototype design engines over the years.
- 29:22But they seem to keep it small, even the RX8.
- 29:25That was the goal though, to. Standardize on those on the 12A
- 29:28and the 13 B and then in the late 80s I think the Cosmo in
- 29:31Japan had a. The three rotor.
- 29:34A3 rotor in it what's considered what's called A20B, which is 380
- 29:39millimeter. Wide rotors.
- 29:41Is it true? And this is just to debunk some
- 29:45questions I have, Yes. Coming from a Pistons person, is
- 29:49it true that you can technically if you had a crankshaft long
- 29:54enough? Eccentric shaft.
- 29:56Just sorry. Eccentric.
- 29:58Shaft eccentric shaft. Yes, long enough.
- 30:01You could just make. You could just keep.
- 30:03Fucking stacking the world, yes is you can just add another gear
- 30:07on a center plate, machine it and.
- 30:09Because I've seen a picture of can stack on, yeah.
- 30:11They can, OK, it's really not practical.
- 30:14It's such an interesting concept though, because you're building
- 30:18a combustion and chamber in a different way.
- 30:21You know what I mean? Like, in a way that one of the
- 30:23things that I like somebody told me about Rotary is, you know how
- 30:25a piston engine goes up, it has to come back down, whereas A
- 30:29Rotary, it's just. Just spinning.
- 30:30That's the coolest shit about it, man.
- 30:32I I love everything the Rotary has to stand for, yes.
- 30:34I just don't know much about them.
- 30:36Like, would you recommend a Rotary to like a new car
- 30:39enthusiast? Yeah, yeah.
- 30:40Like, I like the Rotary engine. It's a that's a good engine.
- 30:43It has its positives. What do you what do you got to
- 30:45lookout for as somebody new getting into it?
- 30:48Like, what did you like? Did you have any experience like
- 30:50that where? You kind of have to make it a
- 30:52little the question a little easier, that's.
- 30:54Or maybe more specific. Yeah, more specific.
- 30:56What Car? OK, let's say, let's say a kid
- 30:58was getting into an FC. I feel like that's the one,
- 31:00everyone if it's. Annoying something to buy a
- 31:02handle. Yeah, right.
- 31:04Like you, I feel like, so you have to have some sort of, I
- 31:08don't know, mechanical. Desire.
- 31:10Passionate about desire. Yeah, yeah, desire.
- 31:13You gotta be ready to be like, OK, fuck.
- 31:14I gotta learn about why that does that.
- 31:16Yeah. It is.
- 31:18Let me see. It's all right.
- 31:19All right, I'll give you. I'll give you this angle.
- 31:23Let's say in the 80s, nineties. I remember most of the guys who
- 31:26had RX sevens back then. Or.
- 31:30Most car guys in general, 80s and 90s.
- 31:32I remember when I was a teenager, when I was in high
- 31:33school and stuff, guys would go buy a Camaro, or if you were a
- 31:37Mustang guy, Grand National RX7RX Sevens were like, the
- 31:41imports were like the import guys, right?
- 31:44So. If you went, if you have some
- 31:45other big block or whatever car you bought in high school and
- 31:48you were a teenager in the 80s and 90s, most of those kids
- 31:50either went to like a technical school or Bow Seas.
- 31:53Or, you know, they were gear heads hanging out Dunkin' Donuts
- 31:56or at the burger joint late night.
- 31:58You know, grease monkeys worked at the gas station with the rag
- 32:00hanging out the side over. Here I feel like it ain't like
- 32:02that anymore though. Yeah, that's the thing.
- 32:04So the most of those guys were some, they had some sort of
- 32:06hands on, right. They were pretty technical,
- 32:08right. And if not they were working on
- 32:10lawn mowers, dirt bikes, they were, you know that that that
- 32:13type of. That type of crowd, you know,
- 32:15that gear, head grease, monkey type crowd, right?
- 32:18So you know, you could tell which ones are which and then
- 32:21what happens. So that if you got into a
- 32:23monster or whatever car you got into, I need a carburetor for my
- 32:26for my fox body. You know, I got a call racing
- 32:29beat to put some stuff on my RX7.
- 32:30For the most part, most people did their own work or if they
- 32:33went somewhere they were able to communicate with the engine
- 32:36builder or what was getting done.
- 32:37That sort of stuff. They get tinkered.
- 32:39I think what happens today is you have folks getting into the
- 32:41car scene today, not just Mazda but maybe even Nissan.
- 32:44You probably see them too that are Dumber than the door nail.
- 32:47They don't know anything. They just they're not
- 32:49mechanically inclined. Yeah, they call AAA.
- 32:52They got to fly. They'd be like.
- 32:54Can you come help me? I don't.
- 32:55Want to feel tired? It's like you see on the phone
- 32:58they'd be like. I got a flat.
- 33:01What should I do so? That's the worst when you drive
- 33:03by someone on the Parkway and it's like a it's a bunch of
- 33:05young kids and they're just looking at the tire.
- 33:07So they don't. They don't.
- 33:09So then they get into the performance world and if they
- 33:11get into the, you're not getting into a stock car.
- 33:13If you're getting into a stock car and you just want to do an
- 33:15oil change and change the tire, I get it.
- 33:17But no, you're you're going from like elementary school to high
- 33:21school to college by getting into a.
- 33:23S13 or a turbo 2RX7 and automatically I want to get this
- 33:27turbo and this intake and this. Yo dude buddy you don't even
- 33:29know how to do the timing or check your oil.
- 33:32Yeah, they go to some shop to get a car built.
- 33:34They come here, they get all this work done cuz mom and daddy
- 33:37gave him the trust month fun money.
- 33:39And then they go buy a car. They come and then they
- 33:41breakdown down the road cuz a little wire was loose, battery
- 33:44was loose, they ran out of gas and they're like, Oh my God this
- 33:46car sucks. They go on the forums.
- 33:48Right this. Is the most accurate thing of.
- 33:50This Frankie's life and why he's mad every day.
- 33:53Motorsport sucks, man. My motor, bro.
- 33:56Oh my. God, motorsport stuff.
- 33:57Guys, a faction suck and they blast you guys on the Internet
- 34:02and then and somebody come put gas in the car, turn on and they
- 34:05go home, so. That was the most accurate rant
- 34:07I've. Ever heard?
- 34:08I know that's what happens. So then, so then.
- 34:11Sometimes it's like sometimes it's what kind of person are
- 34:14you? So you know, believe it.
- 34:16You guys got to see it. On my shop I have this thing
- 34:18called the the. My rules of engagement.
- 34:23So I have them on my wall. Holy shit.
- 34:25If somebody has it, that's my corporate to these guys I have.
- 34:28It on my. Wall.
- 34:29And I have it on my wall and it's like, somebody gotta have
- 34:33it. Give me, give.
- 34:34Me give me. Somebody has it.
- 34:36One of them is if you went to every other shop and every other
- 34:41shop has not made you happy. Just keep it moving, cuz chances
- 34:44are I'm not gonna make you happy.
- 34:46I talk about. I talk to you.
- 34:47Get those guys here or what? Bro, I talk to Malcolm about
- 34:49this every day. I'm like we.
- 34:50Need a list. I went to ABC shop.
- 34:52I went to this shop, That shop. This guy messed up my motor.
- 34:54This guy did this. This guy did that.
- 34:56This guy did that. Yeah, this guy did that.
- 34:57And. The second you have someone
- 34:59who's like, well, I want. To know my engine is no good.
- 35:01So I'm just gonna go with you guys.
- 35:02Yeah. No Mr. Faction guy there because
- 35:05I heard you guys are the best. Yeah.
- 35:06And you know that you're. Just the next.
- 35:08One on the list. Yeah.
- 35:10And then he's going to blast. You then.
- 35:11He's going to shit on you now. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:13So those guys are a liability, man.
- 35:15Oh my God. I'm like, go away kid.
- 35:18Just go, go buy yourself. Out.
- 35:19That sucks, because On the contrary, I feel like that's
- 35:23like unfortunately like my generation, and maybe a little
- 35:27after mine not. Specifically but.
- 35:29They just, they they don't want to like a lot of kids don't want
- 35:33to work on anything. For me, I would want, I would go
- 35:35to your shop because I look, I like what you do.
- 35:38You know that I'm not going to you because you're going to be a
- 35:40magical problem solver. Yeah.
- 35:42Like, I go there because you're going to offer a service that I
- 35:45can't get anywhere else, you know, let.
- 35:46Me see somebody? Somebody.
- 35:48One of my guys have my rules of engagement.
- 35:51I have it somewhere. Rules of Engagement is funny as
- 35:53hell. That's a really good.
- 35:55Name no because I'm telling. You if you have a police
- 35:57message, send it to me in my IG or something.
- 36:01In the office right now, there are rules of engagement.
- 36:05Like like there's a that's a term.
- 36:06A. Correct, Yeah, it's a correct
- 36:08way to approach. I don't know.
- 36:12I only hear about rules of engagement in military.
- 36:14No, I have it on my shop. It's kind of a silly thing.
- 36:17It's a funny thing that I have, but it's.
- 36:18No, no, no, no. Keep it.
- 36:19Make it serious. Enforce that shit I have to
- 36:22have. I wish somebody was somebody's
- 36:23online. I like the signs in shops that
- 36:26say like labor rate and it says if you help me and it says if
- 36:29you. I gotta.
- 36:30I have one that I've worked on over the years.
- 36:32It's really funny, but at the same time, I worked really hard
- 36:34to like, you know? Yeah, nail it.
- 36:36Yeah, there was a situation in each that.
- 36:38One, there's another one on. There.
- 36:40It says if you found if if something I'm doing it's too
- 36:44expensive and you found the cheapest somewhere else, please
- 36:46go ahead, bring it too if you get a chance.
- 36:50Literally, dude. Oh man, I should have.
- 36:52Somebody must have maybe. I don't know if scoops outside
- 36:55or somebody. Can that's the send it to me,
- 36:57but that's the. Scooby is outside.
- 36:59He's his car is broken right now.
- 37:00I don't know if you knew. He was trying to keep it hush
- 37:03and quiet so that it didn't interfere with the pod.
- 37:05That's selfless, Scooby. I hope you figured it out.
- 37:08Is he still outside? I think you might be still
- 37:10outside, honestly. But I hope you figured it out.
- 37:12Poor. So I have rules of engagement,
- 37:14but you know, that's, that's, that's, that's this business.
- 37:18You just have to be wise, you know, as business, Yeah, a
- 37:20business owner. You just have to be smart.
- 37:22You have to be wise. You have to measure twice, cut
- 37:24once. Nobody's not everybody's, not
- 37:26your friend. The guys who come here and sell
- 37:29you dreams. I'm gonna buy this much from
- 37:31you. Oh, my God.
- 37:32I'm gonna be so loyal to you. I got another car I want you to
- 37:34work on. I'm gonna bring you two of my
- 37:36best friends for you to work so you can work on their motors.
- 37:40Just please. Never see them again.
- 37:43Amble pedals. That's what you're saying in
- 37:45Spanish. Amble pedals.
- 37:46Okay. Frankie, try to say it.
- 37:47Ambustedo say Ambustedo. Tele Coffee.
- 37:50I'm not even going to try to say that right now, because it's
- 37:52going to be bad. Yes, it will be bad.
- 37:54I can't roll my so you. Get those type of guys and it's
- 37:57like, Oh my God. So those, you know, you got to
- 37:59be careful. You just have to be wise.
- 38:00Sometimes, sometimes there are those guys though that are a
- 38:04good to your business. You know, sometimes far and few
- 38:07in between. And again, that's sometimes that
- 38:09happens sometimes, you know, as a business owner, you dealt with
- 38:11so many grimy people that you actually get tainted or jaded.
- 38:14My wife says, Oh yeah, that word jaded.
- 38:17You get jaded. And then?
- 38:18That's. True all the time, jaded.
- 38:21And then, So then you got to be careful.
- 38:23You know that you're not that way with every person, because
- 38:25not every person has the right intentions.
- 38:27That's the hardest thing. Have a have a.
- 38:29Heart of mercy and of grace which each individual right
- 38:32because not everybody is is mean like that but you still you got
- 38:35to have your guards up and use wisdom and as the Holy Spirit
- 38:38you know tell me is this guy grind me is that going to do me
- 38:40wrong. And you know if.
- 38:42If he lets you know, you got to be careful with this guy.
- 38:44Then I mean that's a customer service.
- 38:46Thing. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:47It comes with intuition too, like.
- 38:48You just have to like, hey, listen, I'm gonna reserve, I'm
- 38:51too busy. I'll call you back later.
- 38:53Stuff like that, so. I feel like, Frankie, you got
- 38:55it. You got some good intuition with
- 38:56that. Oh, God, yeah, I feel like you.
- 38:58Would you? Do intuition.
- 38:59I'm like I could read someone very easily, that's what I'm.
- 39:01Talking have to be stern. You got to read the cappers.
- 39:04Yeah, they can't. You can't let somebody cap.
- 39:06Pretty good at reading those people, but it's what he's
- 39:08saying is like a good example is like.
- 39:11Let's say you just dealt with like three straight up assholes
- 39:14all morning, right? One after another.
- 39:16And it's not even your fault. Nothing's your fault.
- 39:19But these people just suck. And then a new customer walks
- 39:21in. Now you have to just be, like,
- 39:23all of a sudden, totally fresh, and just that happens.
- 39:26Hello. And that's.
- 39:27The customer service office and. Just Well, that's why you're
- 39:30just mean all the time. That's why I'm just mean all the
- 39:32time. Instead, I'm.
- 39:33Just kidding. Frankie isn't fucking.
- 39:34You know, there was one of my my old landlord that I rented from.
- 39:39We purchased the building now, but I was renting from 2005 to
- 39:432015 in Stony Point, NY Okay This office building and I
- 39:48rented from this guy named Pat and he's done well for him so
- 39:52he's. Wait, wait, were you building
- 39:54engines in office? Building.
- 39:55Yes, I was. I knew you were gonna say.
- 39:58Everything. Yeah.
- 39:58We had to bring engines into a little door and disassemble my
- 40:01machines and go through a side door.
- 40:03It was crazy. Wait, what?
- 40:05That's all I had. That's all I had until I
- 40:06purchased the, you know, commercial building and then we.
- 40:08Moved. Did the landlord know you were
- 40:09doing it? Yeah, but he was a gear head, so
- 40:10he would come in and just kind of see.
- 40:12What was there other? Businesses. 100 hot rods in
- 40:15there. No lie, bro.
- 40:16He had the most beautiful garage you've ever seen in your life.
- 40:18Wow. Anyway, he was very successful
- 40:20in the real estate business, and one time he came.
- 40:22And like very wealthy. And one time he used to, I used
- 40:24to sit with him all the time at his office.
- 40:26He used to have office and he meet all the contractors and he
- 40:29meet all the architects. You got to see this guy beer
- 40:32down here, look like a hillbillies to drive this old
- 40:35truck all the time and go to his meetings with little cardboard
- 40:38and the magic marker and you see all the lawyers come in with
- 40:41cashmere bags and all these leather bags and you know Brooks
- 40:44Brothers suits and he'd be in there with like overalls and
- 40:47stuff like that one time, he said.
- 40:51John, Jonathan, When I go into a meeting, I go in like a tiger
- 40:54and then I'm fair. You go in like a tiger and then
- 40:58you're fair. So, so in other words, he's
- 41:00stern, he's bold and then at. Stern, but fair.
- 41:03Yeah, but those are wise words. You don't get.
- 41:05The average person doesn't get the chance to sit down with very
- 41:09wealthy or, you know, people that are changing the world.
- 41:14The average person doesn't get the chance to sit down with
- 41:16those people. And I feel like I'm doing that
- 41:17right now to you, like that's you to me.
- 41:20You know, glory to God, but, you know, and the Irish person.
- 41:23So when he said that to me, I remember I was like, wow, that's
- 41:26food for thought. Let me think about that.
- 41:27You know, And he was just a very smart dude.
- 41:29He's very wealthy. I know what he has done in his
- 41:32life. So I admire when people give me
- 41:34those little insights and then make, you know, some of those
- 41:36things are those gob stoppers. Remember a gob stopper?
- 41:39You chew it and you never runs out of you.
- 41:41Just chew it and chew on it and chew on it.
- 41:43It has a lot of meaning to it beyond just a few words.
- 41:47Yeah, it's like a proverb. I I I get what you're saying.
- 41:50Yes. And I was like, OK, I
- 41:51understand. So that's it.
- 41:52So you know and then, you know, the book of Proverbs says, you
- 41:56know, take a quote from him who is surely of a stranger.
- 42:00I think that's what it says in the book of Proverbs.
- 42:02And you know, and you know, so you have to just be careful who
- 42:06you do business with, right. Right.
- 42:07As a as you know, you guys have this, this sport here.
- 42:10A lot of stuff can go wrong, you know.
- 42:11Yeah, and the thing. Just comes in.
- 42:13The hard part is like. You can't just be completely
- 42:16closed off to everything either. Like, that's the opposite end of
- 42:19it. Like you could either be really
- 42:21welcoming and then get screwed over, or you could be closed off
- 42:24and you won't go anywhere. And I'm kind of more on that
- 42:27end. Okay, okay.
- 42:29Closed off? Yeah.
- 42:30I feel like you make it a fucking.
- 42:32Like I never I. People want to start doing
- 42:35things together, stuff like that.
- 42:36I'm always like. Right, right.
- 42:38Right. You know, that's because they
- 42:39want free parts. Yeah.
- 42:40Yeah, yeah, Yeah. That's literally.
- 42:42They have no money then. Yeah, that happens a lot in this
- 42:44business. Oh, can I help you clean in the
- 42:46back and I clean your toilet? Yeah.
- 42:48You know, can I do this? Or like or I got this great
- 42:51idea. This is not work.
- 42:52Together, as a business owner, you just gotta be careful with
- 42:55those type because you know they they could.
- 42:57They could bite you. They could bite you in the ass,
- 42:59but you know, just. It's challenging.
- 43:02I get it. You know in the, this is the
- 43:03aftermarket world, right? Yeah, So you're working on
- 43:05Nissans and aftermarket exhaust suspension.
- 43:09You're doing stuff that it's not by the book.
- 43:11You can't go into that Kelly book or the OR the workbook,
- 43:13right. They use the dealers.
- 43:14Yeah, we'll use. FSM Factory service.
- 43:17Manual. You can't go into the factory
- 43:19service manual and see how many hours does this take.
- 43:21It doesn't work like that. This business doesn't work like
- 43:24that. It's like in your head, you have
- 43:25to be quick with it. Quick, quick, quick.
- 43:27How long is this going to take me?
- 43:28The customer wants to know how much he's going to pay for this
- 43:31particular job. Job, I get it.
- 43:32That's I get it. But you and your mind are like,
- 43:34well, I gotta really think about it because that boat can break.
- 43:37This thing is 30 years old. You know, this can happen.
- 43:40Accounting for got a Rust. Myself, you know, So sometimes
- 43:42you give him a number and he's going to hold your feet to the
- 43:44fire. Then you're in trouble when you
- 43:46go under there and you realize this thing is a rust bucket, You
- 43:48know, this thing is falling apart.
- 43:50Somebody rigged it before, so. Truer words have never been
- 43:54seen. And Frankie's literally so
- 43:56happy. So this is you can't go to the
- 43:58fact FSM, right? Yeah.
- 44:00You can't go to the FSM and. Yeah, basically you say you
- 44:04can't get the book. Time, right?
- 44:05You can't get the book time after.
- 44:06That's how you normally estimate things, right?
- 44:08Those factory says it's going to take this long.
- 44:09It's like, yeah, the factory said that when the car came out.
- 44:12Right. Yeah, and both were just.
- 44:14Yeah, right now it's now. You got Russ.
- 44:16Now you had thirty other people in this thing, like everything's
- 44:19broken. So usually it's like.
- 44:21You know, this is what it should take, but this is an estimate.
- 44:27Like they need to understand that that's an estimate, and a
- 44:29lot of people don't understand that, unfortunately so.
- 44:33Yeah, that's right. So you have to just be careful
- 44:35with that and and. That's why you just stick to
- 44:38bill and engines. You'll be OK.
- 44:39I feel like, yeah. But even with that, like how
- 44:41many? How many times probably we had
- 44:43somebody, my my buddy Nick was in here who's like, yeah.
- 44:47Asking how much a rebuild is would be how many, how many
- 44:50times. You get asked that all the time
- 44:52like and you can't really give them a straight answer because
- 44:55something can change challenge like that.
- 44:58With the build challenging and I would say this, you know for
- 45:00people listening, guys are listening, you know all the
- 45:02Youtubers and stuff like that that I listen to us at 6:00
- 45:05o'clock in the afternoon. By 7:00. 30 at.
- 45:07Home on YouTube. You should be outside hanging
- 45:09out playing Do something Home right now on the Internet.
- 45:14YouTube. Crazy to a decent amount of them
- 45:17I wasn't in. Here I had with my kids, I'd be
- 45:19on my bike or something like that.
- 45:20Look beautiful. Oh God, you got a bike.
- 45:22Why cuz cuz Frankie's a bike guy.
- 45:24Yeah and a plane guy. Motorcycle.
- 45:26Yeah, motorcycles. Oh, I used to be a BMX guy too,
- 45:28back in the day, and then I got into I used to ride dirt bikes
- 45:31too as a kid. And then?
- 45:33Now I ride motorcycle, but I get I don't get to ride them as
- 45:35much. I rode it once this entire year.
- 45:36One of my bikes because I'm always with my kids.
- 45:38Does your? What kind?
- 45:39Of motorcycle have a Rotary in it?
- 45:41No. There's one though.
- 45:43There is. There is Monkey RE5, which I've
- 45:45been after, but once you find outline, they're like 5-6 grand.
- 45:48I don't. Want.
- 45:49To it's a Rotary. Motor kids and I got three kids.
- 45:52They're all young girls doing poo poo.
- 45:53So I got to change diapers. Diapers are expensive, bro.
- 45:55Nudge. I don't know about that.
- 45:57One, not us. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 46:00What are diapers? Expensive 30 bucks for At least
- 46:03I think I spent 30. Bucks 3.
- 46:05Craps 2 boxes. Imagine times 3 craps.
- 46:07I have three kids. They're all under 2.
- 46:10Lord. So.
- 46:11Build a Rotary. No, I don't have a kid.
- 46:13I don't know those prices. Just cuz I went to a baby, a
- 46:15gender, really. So I tell everybody with regards
- 46:19to like to, you know, with what you do and everybody listening
- 46:25that. Really the the the word that
- 46:28really triggers sometimes a lot of speed shops is that's
- 46:32expensive or people are like how much is it, right.
- 46:35Okay guys call me all the time. Hey, I want to do a full rotor.
- 46:38How much is it dude? You don't want to do a full
- 46:39rotor if you're asking me how much it is, bro.
- 46:41Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what you're getting
- 46:44yourself into? Like if they came in here and
- 46:46you had that 240SX right there, right?
- 46:47That's the 2:40, right? S13, that's.
- 46:49Yeah, S13 is the millennial term, just so you know.
- 46:52Right. All school folks are going to
- 46:53look at that and say, oh, that's a Nissan 240.
- 46:55Yeah, S13, you know, you're like young kid, right?
- 46:58So all the folks, you know, they're going to be like, that's
- 47:00a Nissan. Yeah, like the RX Sevens, you
- 47:03know, the the news new kids are like FC, FC, FD.
- 47:07You talk to Old Port Regan. He's not.
- 47:09What the hell? You talking about you talking
- 47:10about you as a first Gen. or as a tool.
- 47:13Bodo or that's a 93 Twin Turbo, OK.
- 47:16They don't know FD or all these alphabet words and stuff like
- 47:19that. Yeah, yeah.
- 47:20They don't know the chance. Because the VIN.
- 47:21No, they don't. It doesn't work like that.
- 47:23You got a 280. Yeah.
- 47:24What's the and then or they don't.
- 47:26They don't use those little letters.
- 47:27Yeah. So I tell most folks, right?
- 47:30That get into the business dude, if you're coming here and you
- 47:33wanna 2 JZ or what's the motor they put on these?
- 47:35SR20. SR20 Yeah, one JZ.
- 47:39One J. How much is it?
- 47:40No, dude, you don't wanna know. This is not for you.
- 47:43Keep going. Go somewhere.
- 47:44Go. Go buy bicycle.
- 47:45Walmart. Got bikes for $89.
- 47:48Do some exercise, go buy some rim, Go.
- 47:50Buy a bag. You got a Malcolm cracking up
- 47:52over here. Go buy a bag of warm up.
- 47:54Put some speakers on the side with a total bad, you know.
- 47:56Why? Because Malcolm's thinking the
- 47:57same shit when people say that stuff.
- 47:59The hell out of here. You know, you gotta tell those
- 48:01kids just, just just go away, bro.
- 48:02Go put some rims on your coat with spinners and stuff.
- 48:05Do something. But this is because they're
- 48:07asking you for something that they shouldn't be asking you.
- 48:09It's just, yeah, that's one, right, But 22 in this world.
- 48:14Everything we do, I think it's just super inexpensive.
- 48:17Like the labor rate that your average performance shop does.
- 48:21It's so less. It's really a labor of love.
- 48:23For yeah, For what? For what you're getting.
- 48:25Right, because you're here and. All the knowledge that we have.
- 48:28You're not going to putting a dealership and they got some 19
- 48:31year old kid you know using this you know half inch impact gun to
- 48:34take off a 10 millimeter. You know they don't they don't
- 48:36have you're not you're not getting an oil change like that
- 48:38where it's flat rate right or brakes sets on Honda dealer on
- 48:42your Accord. Right.
- 48:43And he does 3 brake jobs and four brake jobs in a day.
- 48:47They were all flat rate. And flat rate is dangerous a.
- 48:49100 bucks right now he. Made 15. $100 on 4 flat rate
- 48:52jobs, right? Yeah, $1500, right?
- 48:54But then the wheel falls off on the way off.
- 48:56But still that. That's flat rate work, right?
- 48:58Yeah, that's 123123. That's just the basic, you know,
- 49:01guy. He's got decent skill sets and
- 49:03that's all. He knows what to do.
- 49:04But he made 1500 bucks. You come to a performance shop
- 49:07like yourself. Right.
- 49:09You can't charge flat rate on certain jobs well.
- 49:12Right, it depends on some. Some shops do pay flat rate.
- 49:15I don't know why. But it's difficult because when
- 49:17you're doing big projects, you have to, you know, you have to
- 49:20price the job out. So then if you say tell the
- 49:22customer I want 5 grand for. This particular, not to mention
- 49:24you run into all these different issues we already spoke about.
- 49:27That's the thing And your customer will come and say, oh,
- 49:30that's a lot of money, $5000 and you can turn around and say,
- 49:33yeah my friend, but. That 5000 is taking me 3 weeks
- 49:36to do, you know, I can make do breaks on a Honda Civic or I can
- 49:40do oil changes and make that type of money in three days.
- 49:42Four days, yeah. So when customers come and they
- 49:45they try to lowball you like that and it's.
- 49:48Oh, that's the my favorite thing that happens to me.
- 49:50I guess we're just shit talking customers now, but that's fine.
- 49:53I mulled you casual pot. Favorite thing that happens to
- 49:55me is when the customer goes don't tell me I already forgot
- 49:58what I was going to say. Fuck, what were you just saying?
- 50:01Lowball. Lowball.
- 50:01OK, yeah though. We have some shit happened the
- 50:05other day. I go, here's the price for the
- 50:07parts. He goes, oh, can you do 300 or
- 50:10something like that? And I was like, what?
- 50:13I had to like to take a second look at the e-mail.
- 50:14I was like, wait, what? What?
- 50:17Oh, he's trying to negotiate the price of brand new products.
- 50:23I'm like, no. And he's like, and he just
- 50:27didn't answer for three days and then like responded, OK, all
- 50:30right, I'll pay it. Like bro, what are we doing?
- 50:32And that's this has happened multiple times.
- 50:35Multiple times. It happens a lot.
- 50:37And how much to do the install something like that.
- 50:40I'll give them the price. And there's a time when you do
- 50:42this and I'm like, dude, this isn't do you negotiate when you
- 50:46go to Amazon? There's a place where I've yeah,
- 50:49there are places when I was younger.
- 50:51Now when I'm gonna say younger, because I had to, I was that.
- 50:55Younger a gas station that would come.
- 50:57Baby as it is, how old are you? Younger.
- 50:58We talking about 2810 years old. I'm 28.
- 51:00Are you 28? Yeah, you're still young.
- 51:02Yeah, I'm still a baby. I'm 32, all right.
- 51:04Yeah. Well, how old are you?
- 51:06Like 3233? Oh shit, 47 No shot.
- 51:09I'm 47. You look young.
- 51:11You look like. You're 27 I.
- 51:12Drink. I don't smoke.
- 51:14That's what's up. I do all of that, yeah.
- 51:17Lewis was telling me that too. Because I don't either.
- 51:18I don't. Drink.
- 51:19I don't smoke. Yeah, Frankie is a.
- 51:21Break night anymore? Yeah.
- 51:23Frankie is also like trying. To keep stress, no, I used to
- 51:26drink. I just.
- 51:26I just don't see the. I cut it your body.
- 51:29And I cut it back. It was hurting my stomach.
- 51:31I don't smoke, don't do drugs, none of that stuff.
- 51:33Yeah, most car guys, most old school car guys don't do drugs
- 51:36or. Like that.
- 51:37Because, yeah, because they need to put the money in their.
- 51:39Car. Yeah, they.
- 51:40Need the money? Yeah, something too expensive.
- 51:41I mean, that's how it was too. When I was younger and I was
- 51:43valeting cars and shit, everyone would be like, yo, how do you
- 51:45have money for your car in this? And I was like, well, here's the
- 51:47difference. When you guys leave work, you
- 51:48all go to the bar every single night.
- 51:51I'm like, literally every single night.
- 51:54You make $40, you go to the bar and you blow all of it.
- 51:57I'm like, what? What do you mean?
- 51:59Instead, you could buy some rat hoses with that tires.
- 52:03A tire with the 40 bucks. These guys would.
- 52:07Drinking is not the same anymore, You know it's today,
- 52:10you get pulled over and you get a DWI.
- 52:11It's 10 grand, right? I wouldn't even know.
- 52:14I I don't fuck with that. If you have a family, if you
- 52:16have a job that that requires your license, truck driver or
- 52:20something. You're doing bro.
- 52:21You're oh, yeah. You're fucked.
- 52:22You're screwed bro. That's why some people don't
- 52:24even drift on the street anymore.
- 52:25Because I was gonna say like, don't.
- 52:27If you're listening to this, that that little you could take
- 52:30from this little conversation is don't do that shit.
- 52:32Don't drive under the influence of.
- 52:34Of alcohol is a dangerous fucking expensive too.
- 52:37It's expensive and he fucks you. If you love the car so much,
- 52:40don't risk anything to let you lose it.
- 52:43Yeah, right. So, yeah, so.
- 52:45Like, I'm That's so funny. You just said that because again
- 52:49like my dad would say like they used to used to get a DUI and
- 52:53you would get like a slap on the.
- 52:54Wrist. They just let you go home.
- 52:56All right. Don't do it again.
- 52:57Somebody call somebody to come and drive you home.
- 52:59Yeah. He already drove.
- 53:01My dad got caught when we little kids in the 80, he got caught.
- 53:04And I think drinking and driving and then the cops would bring
- 53:07you home. Leave the car there, give me the
- 53:08keys, go get the car. Oh, so it wasn't even, like, a
- 53:11big deal? Yeah.
- 53:12I got caught one time in Hunts Point.
- 53:14Like in the early 90s. I had a Heineken in my hand.
- 53:16I was driving with my buddy and cop pulled us over.
- 53:19We were you. Know.
- 53:20Oh, he was drinking. Yeah, driving.
- 53:22The cop came, took the beer out of my hand, and he spilled it.
- 53:25Get out of here, I said. OK, no problem.
- 53:29No problem, You wanna spill? Another one.
- 53:31Yes. Yeah, you've done.
- 53:34Stupid stuff, you know, But when the brace got, I'm still here.
- 53:37Yeah, because you got into racing as well.
- 53:39I saw the picture on your. Which one?
- 53:41On your shop the home page. Yeah, we used to drag race our
- 53:43car. That's how I blew the first
- 53:45engine. It's.
- 53:47That's how I you know. Was that in the early 90s too?
- 53:49Or two. We had an all motor car.
- 53:50Back then it was all motor and then it was a nitrous car.
- 53:53I remember that in the 90s the Rotary performance and Rotary
- 53:56drag racing was all based around all motor cars and nitrous cars.
- 54:00Only few people had turbo cars. Why?
- 54:02Why were people what only few people have?
- 54:04The. Because remember you have it's
- 54:06expensive. You have in the 80s the turbo 2
- 54:08comes out fuel injection and in the 90s the 93 comes out, but in
- 54:12the 90s? In the 90s you had very few
- 54:15accessories to you didn't have aftermarket Ecus, you had like
- 54:18the old house like F nines and the fuel only Ecus, right.
- 54:22So that was only. You have aftermarket tools you
- 54:24had. Turbos you had like truck turbos
- 54:26or turbonetics. Turbonetics was out.
- 54:28Who else was out? They put truck turbos on
- 54:30everything. Yeah, so the.
- 54:30Turbonetics and you had some, you still had guys running
- 54:33sevens in the early days with the fuel only Ecus.
- 54:38You like the one that just runs on straight vacuum?
- 54:40Yeah like a fuel only ECU and then the 13 B is they would they
- 54:44would take like the factory 93 intake or racing beat intake and
- 54:47put a throttle body on the on there and there was nobody made
- 54:51throttle bodies for them. They would take a General Motors
- 54:53throttle body A/C Delco with the floor injectors.
- 54:56Yeah they would use for like the fire pigeons and stuff.
- 54:59They would put. Those on the Rotary engines with
- 55:01a turbonetics hat like this with a screw on top and then an inner
- 55:04cooler from like a. You know, some sort of diesel
- 55:07truck or something like that, your own homemade manifold and
- 55:11you know there was you. It would still have a
- 55:13distributor. How much power would that make?
- 55:15You know 7-8 hundred I think. I think that we turbo is 1 car
- 55:18that we turbo Folito and stuff to all those guys ran sevens
- 55:21with with those fuel only Ecu's and I think Folito which is an
- 55:25order seven out of Puerto Rico he ran sevens with carburetors.
- 55:28What the fuck? Blow through with a carburetor.
- 55:30Blow through. When you're saying sevens,
- 55:31you're not saying RX7, you're saying. 7 seconds in, 1/4 mile
- 55:34in A. Quarter in a.
- 55:35Quarter in 1/4 mile. This is in the 90s still.
- 55:38Yeah, this is some Rotary shit. I don't know.
- 55:40Of yeah, I thought. I'm like 7 seconds, maybe it's
- 55:43like 1/8. Dude, that's insane.
- 55:45Remember in the early days you didn't even have a crank angle
- 55:47sensor. So when the guys you know didn't
- 55:49have they couldn't use a crank angle sensor.
- 55:52They had to make a crank trigger a trigger wheel on the front of
- 55:54the pulley with the Electro motor.
- 55:56I think it was. Yeah, you know electromotive,
- 55:58they would sell you a setup and you would make a trigger wheel
- 56:01Okay if you wanted to go fuel ingestion and you didn't have a
- 56:03crank angle sensor, yeah. What the fuck?
- 56:06Yeah, Evolution today is so much easier today.
- 56:09And you have a credit card. What do you what do?
- 56:10They do with your credit card. That's a different kind of.
- 56:13Bill, you go to eBay, buy this, buy that.
- 56:15What do these cars run now? The fastest rotaries?
- 56:18And I. Think the.
- 56:19Fastest. Rotary right now, given today is
- 56:22Ray de Los Cielos. I think it's something like
- 56:24that. It's a blue 6262 door.
- 56:27You think it's out of Florida or Puerto Rico runs 608 at 200 and
- 56:30like probably 29 miles an hour. I don't know if it's I.
- 56:33Think NA. Terrible okay, I think Wilbur
- 56:36tunes. It it's not mistaken.
- 56:37Fuck, I could be wrong. But look, I think Wilbur tunes
- 56:39that Kerry builds it, and I think it's a Kerry Wilbur and
- 56:43it's a six to six, Like full chassis Con 13B.
- 56:46Okay. You said six to six like the
- 56:48Mazda, 6 to 6, six like the. The bigger Mazda, Do you know
- 56:51if? That is for chassis car though,
- 56:53Yeah, you know what, I'm not even sure it's a six to six.
- 56:55It's a it's a pro model chassis. Oh, it's like a like a plastic
- 56:58type of thing. I.
- 56:59Don't know what they turn it into with some decals and stuff.
- 57:02Feel like the Rotary community is very tight knit like you guys
- 57:05all kind of know. Well, like, for example, all the
- 57:07shit you just named that people were doing in the 90s, You're
- 57:10gonna have to learn that from somebody else.
- 57:12You. How'd you do that?
- 57:13Or maybe somebody else just looking at it at like a.
- 57:16At a place. You know, I was thinking about
- 57:18that the other day and I talk about it with all the guys that
- 57:20come to the shop. Yeah, all the time.
- 57:21They're always blown away. Sometimes when I tell them stuff
- 57:24and all the customers that you guys know that come to the shop,
- 57:27I'm always yelling at them and tell them stop being retarded.
- 57:32Yeah, yeah, I'm nervous sometimes, but but I always tell
- 57:34them, I tell them that we're actually going backwards in
- 57:40certain areas. What do you mean?
- 57:42We're actually going, what do they call that reversion or
- 57:44something like? That right is that.
- 57:46The Yeah, no, I know what you're talking.
- 57:48About I can't even reverse evolution is what I'm assuming
- 57:50what you're talking about. Like we're going you.
- 57:53Guys probably don't. There's a term for public.
- 57:55School. Like we skipped it.
- 57:56I did go to public school. So reversion or like going
- 57:59backwards. Right.
- 58:00Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 58:00With what you said before, people have to learn that now,
- 58:04yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:05Some of the. Things people have accomplished
- 58:08in the 60s, in the 70s or even you know, six 70s, eighties,
- 58:1290s, early 2000s, things that I saw that blew me away.
- 58:14I used to be like, damn, well, look at that.
- 58:16Remember I was a little kid but I was my older brother used to
- 58:18take me to the drag races when I was a little kid and I used to
- 58:20see things. I used to be like, wow.
- 58:22So I was able to experience, thank God, nineties, 2000s,
- 58:25early 2000s, late 2000s and now in the 23.
- 58:28So that's so I was able to experience a lot and see a lot
- 58:32and but going back to your. Going back, reverting.
- 58:35The word is reverting. I think we're actually going
- 58:38backwards. Look for example.
- 58:39Let me explain to. You fuck let.
- 58:41Me explain to you. OK, so in the 80s, the in the
- 58:4680s the Rotary world, the drag race import world which is was
- 58:51Rotary versus piston. Yeah they used to call it Rotol
- 58:53versus Piton the. Battle of the Ages.
- 58:56Right. So that was the, that was the
- 58:58that was the performance world of the Rotary.
- 59:00It was Rotary versus Pistons, right.
- 59:02And they would have events down in ATCO which eventually turned
- 59:04into the Pan Americans right, which is the biggest, the
- 59:07longest import Rotary event going forever, right.
- 59:11That put the Rotary game on the map, right.
- 59:14And the East Coast and the drag race, Rotary drag race in the
- 59:17United States that put it on the map, right.
- 59:19And then it was Rotary versus piston and the Rotary was
- 59:22obviously the 12A, the old 13B, most likely the five letter
- 59:26motor. 12A plates against the three TC motor that was in the
- 59:30Toyota Corolla. Yeah, yeah, you guys see all the
- 59:32Puerto Ricans and how they like all the Toyota.
- 59:34Cars. Literally.
- 59:34Like, why are these all things that Puerto Rican people love?
- 59:37Because those because the econo box and what you guys Why
- 59:42Starlet Corolla or X3RX2? Why that is because those cars
- 59:45were pretty inexpensive. Now, if you wanted to make it
- 59:48fast, what did people do back then?
- 59:50Let's make it fast with least amount of money spent, which
- 59:54let's just. Put a Rotary in or take the
- 59:57three TC and work on it. Right.
- 59:59Because in the 80s, displacement was really it, Right.
- 1:00:03Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:00:03Yeah. Replacing for displacement,
- 1:00:05which is the turbo analogy, what they say now.
- 1:00:07And, you know, none. That was later.
- 1:00:09Back then, you wanted to go fast.
- 1:00:11Just put a V8 in it, put a big block in it, right.
- 1:00:13But the import world was like, Nah, let's work on the Rotary.
- 1:00:16Let's make that car fast. Because in Puerto Rico, they
- 1:00:18used to do a lot of drag racing. And since there was a lot of
- 1:00:20Puerto Ricans here in the East Coast, they continue working on
- 1:00:23the Rotary engine, right. And then the 3C was like the
- 1:00:26battle. It was the battle of the three
- 1:00:27TC's verse the Rotary, right? 90s, right.
- 1:00:31And then so the three TC is a push rod engine.
- 1:00:34Yeah, right. With a distributor, 2 valves,
- 1:00:381.8 liter, the biggest fuck. And those and that.
- 1:00:41Those cars ran six. They had drag cars running
- 1:00:45sixes, I mean 779770. I think the fastest one now is a
- 1:00:49red starlet in Puerto Rico. I think he ran 7 four, but he
- 1:00:52may have a bill ahead, I'm not sure.
- 1:00:54But the fastest with a stock head, I remember they were able
- 1:00:56to get down into the to the to the sevens with A3 tc.
- 1:01:01Now look. I got more impressed by that.
- 1:01:03There's cars that are faster today.
- 1:01:04Yeah, I know there is. You could put this motor or you
- 1:01:08know, R. VK. 24 and 4G63 and yeah, I know
- 1:01:12there's a lot of motors that can go fast that fast if not fast,
- 1:01:15that's true. But now think go back 25 years
- 1:01:17or 20 years ago when they had the three TC push rod came
- 1:01:21underneath. Two valves, right.
- 1:01:25No distributors. So you had to make a crank
- 1:01:27angle, a trigger or run the distributor with blow through.
- 1:01:30No intake, man of no fuel injection.
- 1:01:32So they ran carburetor Weber side drafts with a box with an
- 1:01:35inner cooler, Right on gas, you know, no alcohol.
- 1:01:38It was like gas. And they ran I think 790 or
- 1:01:42something like that. So, but all that, all those old
- 1:01:45school G's that did all that knew what Pistons to use, what
- 1:01:49cranks. You know because I used to sell
- 1:01:51motors in the 90s. I remember I used to go to the
- 1:01:53junk yards a lot find engines and sell them.
- 1:01:55So I was always in the Toyota guys were always like hey find
- 1:01:58me an 18 RI, think it was from the Toyota Celica.
- 1:02:01They would use that crank in the three TC motor and or they would
- 1:02:05use the block from the minivan, Toyota minivan, you know the
- 1:02:08le's 8485, so. You saying like some of this
- 1:02:10knowledge might have been lost? It's gone.
- 1:02:12It's gone because that generation, now they're
- 1:02:15retiring, they're going away, they're passing away or
- 1:02:17whatever. They're just.
- 1:02:18Believe in. So now that a new guy comes in
- 1:02:21with a with A4AG48, no 4G63 let's say or K20 four, you don't
- 1:02:28even know what a distributor is anymore because you got a, you
- 1:02:30have a coil packs, A coil packs and a Cam angle and a Cam angle
- 1:02:35sensor. That's it.
- 1:02:35So you don't know what a distributor is, you don't know.
- 1:02:37There's a lot of stuff here that that has been upgraded obviously
- 1:02:41to make the car go faster. But now that empirical knowledge
- 1:02:45that those guys learned in the 90s and 80s, that's all gone.
- 1:02:48Dude, a three TC going a sub. 8 seconds do.
- 1:02:51You get what I'm saying? So now it's real.
- 1:02:53Easier now to make horsepower. So then a three TC.
- 1:02:56Let's say you took a three TC and you did all sorts of work to
- 1:02:58the lower end and the piston and the heads and whatnot, and you
- 1:03:01got 200 horsepower out of it. That was a lot.
- 1:03:04Yeah. I was like, dude, you have to
- 1:03:05spend a lot of money. A lot of, you know, there was
- 1:03:07number Pistons for the for the 1.83 TC, so they put a piston
- 1:03:11from a B2000. Master B2000 and take it machine
- 1:03:14in. Put a piston in from a B2000
- 1:03:16because now it's 2.0 stroker. But so then, but that knowledge
- 1:03:20base is now gone. So now you take AK-24 and that
- 1:03:23car may that block makes 200 horsepower 225 with very little
- 1:03:26mods without you doing anything to the short block, right?
- 1:03:29Yeah, that's unheard of in an old legacy motor built in the
- 1:03:3370s and 80s. But they had to work really hard
- 1:03:35to make that power. Now you don't have to work that
- 1:03:38hard, that hard. Just.
- 1:03:39Get a kick 24 and no one's. Really putting in the work to
- 1:03:41make it even. Faster.
- 1:03:42That's it. You go get a flash.
- 1:03:43I'm on tunes. They make 225.
- 1:03:45Oh my God, I make 225. Yeah.
- 1:03:46The thing is is right now, like if I saw a Three TC like done
- 1:03:51up, done up, throwing down like that, I would be more amazed at
- 1:03:55the Three TC and I want to talk to that.
- 1:03:58Guy. Right, right.
- 1:03:58I feel like maybe there was a gap there where people.
- 1:04:02Weren't really talking to the people who were doing that.
- 1:04:05You know, maybe, maybe it was like intimidation of the scene,
- 1:04:09but like, that information, you're right.
- 1:04:11Never got handed down. That's kind of fucking wild to
- 1:04:13think about. Right now with the Rotary
- 1:04:16engine, right. Yeah.
- 1:04:17They the, the plates, you know, the plates, the billet plates.
- 1:04:19Yeah, big thing. Now everybody wants to put
- 1:04:21billet plates. Yeah.
- 1:04:22Why? Why is that?
- 1:04:23Yeah, why? Just the whole.
- 1:04:24Thing with the billet plates is because the billet plates would
- 1:04:27crack. And then first they had the
- 1:04:29factory place and the factory place with crack from leaning
- 1:04:32too much timing and tire shake sometimes breaks them and stuff.
- 1:04:36And then what happens when a factory plate cracks?
- 1:04:38The oil galleys are in there, it leaks, oil falls on the tire,
- 1:04:41You crash the car. That's.
- 1:04:43What happens? Right?
- 1:04:44And then they had belly pans, diapers and all that stuff.
- 1:04:46But still, you don't want to break a factory plate.
- 1:04:49Right. And I have a customer that went
- 1:04:50to the Dino and broke a plate the other.
- 1:04:52Day. So is that a?
- 1:04:53That's a somewhat common thing. Or is that like that's when?
- 1:04:55They're making power. That's when they're making a lot
- 1:04:56of horsepower. That's that's a mainly a tuner
- 1:04:59issue and that's A and that's when they're making a lot of
- 1:05:02horsepower and that's a not. I don't think it would ever
- 1:05:07happen. On na nitrous, yes.
- 1:05:08On a turbo car, yes. I feel like it's the equivalent
- 1:05:11of like fucking up an Sr. like blowing a hole through.
- 1:05:14It yeah, it's the same thing and the place would crack and then
- 1:05:16you don't have to replace it, right?
- 1:05:18So. But so the guys that ran with
- 1:05:22factory plates, I think Con Puerto Rico Christian ran 660
- 1:05:27with the factory plates. And there's other cars that have
- 1:05:29ran 69680. Whatever.
- 1:05:31There's a star here in New Jersey that ran 680 with stock
- 1:05:35plates started from a touch and I think La Otra was called.
- 1:05:38This is 10 years ago at English Town still English town was
- 1:05:40still open. He ran 680 with factory plates.
- 1:05:43So it's doable. The problem is they're
- 1:05:44eventually going to break, right.
- 1:05:45So people put the aluminum ones so that they don't so that.
- 1:05:49You know you don't have the fracture issue anymore and then
- 1:05:51you know you don't have to take the engine as.
- 1:05:52Apart as much. But can I ask you something?
- 1:05:54When people were using factory plates, you have to be that much
- 1:05:58more careful. You have to be that you have to
- 1:06:01measure twice. You have to be.
- 1:06:03You're more in tune with it more.
- 1:06:05Meticulous. You're more meticulate.
- 1:06:06You have to see because you don't have, you know a second
- 1:06:10chance. So I feel like the guys a lot of
- 1:06:12times who had limited resources or limited parts or.
- 1:06:17You know, they didn't have all those buffers.
- 1:06:19You know, with billet plates and billet stuff, they were they had
- 1:06:23a more robust learning curve. That's you're.
- 1:06:26Saying the art is almost. There's there's two, there's two
- 1:06:29phrases like forged by fire and trial by and trial by fire.
- 1:06:33Those, they mean the same thing. That's what I feel like, that
- 1:06:36person, they experienced that loss once already.
- 1:06:39So they're like, you know what, let me check.
- 1:06:41Now what? I have some customers and you
- 1:06:44know they put billet plates on their motor.
- 1:06:46And say before they were leaning or whatever, Okay, they'll take
- 1:06:50the building plate time to refresh it.
- 1:06:52And I'll look inside the engine and I'm like, wow, I'll chatter
- 1:06:54here. Okay, pinging over here, okay, I
- 1:06:57see Mark's shaft is bent. Dude, you know what?
- 1:07:00The issue you had before without billet plates, you still have,
- 1:07:03you're not breaking the plates anymore because now you have
- 1:07:06billet plates, but you still have that same underlying issue.
- 1:07:08Will you break something else? What will break?
- 1:07:11Aside from that. Yeah, yeah, all the stuff will
- 1:07:12happen. But what I'm saying is that a
- 1:07:14lot that underlying issue wasn't resolved.
- 1:07:16Yeah. So I think a lot of in the
- 1:07:17performance world in general, I think 2023, everything is
- 1:07:22available online nowadays, you know, it's beautiful.
- 1:07:24K20 four, you want to buy this water pump housing or this or
- 1:07:27that, go on eBay and 500 people are selling it.
- 1:07:29You know, for 2999 you didn't have those options 20 years ago.
- 1:07:33You didn't have the Internet. You have to buy something.
- 1:07:35You needed a catalog. Let me order this Wait cod for
- 1:07:38the mail guy. Oh my God.
- 1:07:42You couldn't even track that shit too so?
- 1:07:44Today you could build the car so easily because you could buy
- 1:07:45every you buy the car before the car is being flat bedded to your
- 1:07:48house. You're already online ordering
- 1:07:49everything so that you can swap it the next day and it's bolt on
- 1:07:52right? But.
- 1:07:53I feel what's happening is all that at the same time has
- 1:07:57allowed people not to really think of what's going on.
- 1:07:59Let me fix this issue. Let me fix that issue.
- 1:08:01Let me Why did this break? Let me figure out why it broke
- 1:08:041st and then replace it. But people aren't doing that.
- 1:08:06And then what's happening is it's not allowing you to.
- 1:08:10You're skipping a beat, bro. You're skipping a beat.
- 1:08:12There's a lot of customers like. That today and.
- 1:08:14I got this. And you said it was going to do
- 1:08:16this, right? Yeah.
- 1:08:17Well. You have an uninstaller.
- 1:08:19Issue. Yes.
- 1:08:19Like, I don't know. It's like everything's not just.
- 1:08:21They think, Oh well, I looked it up on and this said this, so I
- 1:08:24bought these parts. Same thing with drifting with
- 1:08:26people. They buy all these angle kits
- 1:08:28for the front end, they never drifted before and then they buy
- 1:08:31all these angle kits to put and they're like, Oh well, Adam, LZ
- 1:08:34said I had to get this and that. I'm like, well.
- 1:08:36That's like a weird way, like I feel like again, like the the
- 1:08:39later generation way of thinking is like, let me look at what
- 1:08:43people. Are doing right now.
- 1:08:45And they're and I'm going to just buy my way into that part.
- 1:08:49Because that's what's happening and I see that and then.
- 1:08:53Because I used to do that to me, like I was like, damn, I always
- 1:08:56have to have the best shit. But but now working with my
- 1:08:59friends, working with Chris Darrell or or any of my other
- 1:09:02friends, the way that we're trying to think now, or at least
- 1:09:05we're getting it from Chris, which is probably getting it
- 1:09:07from you, Frankie, is that we want to know, OK, why would I
- 1:09:12want to go this way? And what is that going to do for
- 1:09:14me if I go that way? Or maybe I should go this way?
- 1:09:17Yeah, well, a lot of that's. Why?
- 1:09:18You see me when I'm thinking I'm like, what other options do I
- 1:09:21have? I'll look at every fucking
- 1:09:22option, figure out what each option is going to benefit me or
- 1:09:24how it's going to hurt. Me.
- 1:09:25Yeah. You don't always have to spend a
- 1:09:26lot of money. You don't.
- 1:09:28Yeah, but you need to do the research.
- 1:09:30There's no short cutting of. We're known to fix a lot of
- 1:09:33stuff that other people don't repair.
- 1:09:35Yeah, yeah, that's one thing that we're known for.
- 1:09:38I mean, repairing things that nobody else repairs or people
- 1:09:40throw out. OK.
- 1:09:41Yeah, maybe because you have the knowledge that people don't.
- 1:09:45You know the years I used to always say there's gotta be a
- 1:09:46way to fix this. There's gotta be, There's
- 1:09:48something, let's say, and you're.
- 1:09:49From you're from a generation before us, so it's.
- 1:09:51You have what we report. We didn't have a lot.
- 1:09:53Of. Money.
- 1:09:54So when I was younger, we were, we didn't, we didn't have that
- 1:09:56type of money, you know. So if we didn't, I was up the
- 1:09:58junkyard with my older brother that's got a junkyard.
- 1:10:01Oh, I need to rerun for this car.
- 1:10:02That's cool to get it out of this car.
- 1:10:04Oh, they got a transmission. They got a transmission over
- 1:10:05there. And how much for that, you know?
- 1:10:07What? Junk yards like back then, was
- 1:10:09it? Fun There was picking pools
- 1:10:10everywhere here in Patterson. Damn, I wish that arrow.
- 1:10:14Was point was known? For hookers and junk yards,
- 1:10:16Yeah, damn and drag racing. Yeah.
- 1:10:20Hookers. Junk.
- 1:10:20That's what transport was. For that sounds like you guys
- 1:10:23know from back in the day and be like what was Hunts Point known
- 1:10:25for? And everybody went there to get
- 1:10:26their windshields repaired to buy tires and to buy parts cuz
- 1:10:30it was all full of junk yards and then the food market that
- 1:10:34the trucks would line up and pick up food.
- 1:10:36And you know, the prison was over there and stuff like that,
- 1:10:38but now they moved the fish market there and now a lot of
- 1:10:41the houses, you know, gentrification and all the new
- 1:10:44folks moving in and stuff like that.
- 1:10:45So Hunts Point is not what it used to be years ago, but that
- 1:10:48was what it was. All about South.
- 1:10:49Then you went junk yards were everywhere and you went to the
- 1:10:52junk yards and hey, how much you know you go pull it out, go to
- 1:10:55the front and be some guy there. Dirty box 30.
- 1:10:57You know you were able to you were able to go get parts.
- 1:10:59Now there's no pick and pulls anywhere around here is.
- 1:11:01There I want to go. I want.
- 1:11:02I literally was just talking to my buddy.
- 1:11:04You gotta go to people, but. That was.
- 1:11:06MPA kicked them all out. And.
- 1:11:08Values went up. Now you got it.
- 1:11:09Now they got catalogs for that right where where you you're
- 1:11:12probably you're probably like damn we got to go to the section
- 1:11:15where they put the imports I. Used to own a junkyard.
- 1:11:17I used to run a junkyard. So then that's.
- 1:11:19Yeah, they used. I used to.
- 1:11:20When the hell was this? Yeah, in 2002 and three at the
- 1:11:24same time when I was doing the. What was that like?
- 1:11:27It was 20. It was called, it was called
- 1:11:29Cornerstone Recycling. It's 20 Point New York and it
- 1:11:32was, you know, we had to buy the Hollander software.
- 1:11:35So that was a multiple listing. It's called multiple storage.
- 1:11:38They only had only had. Now it's.
- 1:11:40Only rotaries and. Nearly rotaries in there.
- 1:11:42He did that just to fund your Rotary.
- 1:11:44Yeah, yeah, I just. Have to go to the auction in
- 1:11:45Newburgh with the flatbed and stuff.
- 1:11:47I had to drive the flatbed and pick up junk cars.
- 1:11:49So you were doing that while you were doing goopy performance
- 1:11:52while you were working? All to fund.
- 1:11:55I've worn multiple hats in my years, man.
- 1:11:57It's been challenging. But just to just just to keep
- 1:11:59the drive going, dude. Well kids these days see like
- 1:12:02your your cars and they're like, well, why can't I have all that?
- 1:12:04I have one job. Well, he had three.
- 1:12:06So yeah, you know like people just don't have the.
- 1:12:09I was doing that and I was going to sell coffee at one time,
- 1:12:11import coffee from Guatemala at one time.
- 1:12:14Because this course starts. Importing coffee, but that fell
- 1:12:17through. And then before that I used to I
- 1:12:19was always buying and selling cars and.
- 1:12:22And then we did tree. We had a tree business at one
- 1:12:24time. Me and my buddy Eddie had a tree
- 1:12:26business at one time. Yeah, we saw.
- 1:12:29Figured you'd learn how to fly to save some, fight some crime.
- 1:12:32Did also and then worked in auto body.
- 1:12:34For about 10 years I worked at a body.
- 1:12:35Shop 10 years. Okay.
- 1:12:36That's. And then when I was going
- 1:12:39through college, I was working at a Body Shop.
- 1:12:41Okay. All right.
- 1:12:43Yeah, we're doing frame and all sorts of.
- 1:12:46How'd you feel about doing body work?
- 1:12:47Suck. I don't want to do no more.
- 1:12:48I'm done after 10 years and a slammer and that's.
- 1:12:50It now so now at. Least you know how to do.
- 1:12:53Things Are you just doing goopy performance?
- 1:12:55Yes. So now would you say you're a
- 1:12:58lot happier? You got one hat now?
- 1:13:00One big hat? Yeah, but it's a hat.
- 1:13:02Yeah, one big hat. It's very it's it's it's
- 1:13:04challenging, it's got this challenges.
- 1:13:06You know, I don't work for anybody which is the best part
- 1:13:08about it, right, but. You know.
- 1:13:10You know you know how it is when you run your own business you
- 1:13:13you have payroll to me. You have have to get pull this
- 1:13:15job out. That's getting.
- 1:13:16Scarier and scarier every day. Fuck.
- 1:13:20Well, you you guys, they just got a new guy.
- 1:13:21Yeah, so yeah, right. Yeah.
- 1:13:24Hey, Zeus. Yeah, right.
- 1:13:25So Scooby's brother, he's working here now, so.
- 1:13:27So you know you have to make sure you have workload for the
- 1:13:28guys for the week and blah blah, blah.
- 1:13:31So you know we have at Kupi performance we have about we
- 1:13:34manufacture about 30-40 different items.
- 1:13:38Not more. Now we do a lot of cool, unique
- 1:13:40machining and. Tell me, tell me about like your
- 1:13:42top three like either top selling or what what what do you
- 1:13:46like the most the top three things and and for.
- 1:13:48Those of you who are listening that don't know goopy actually
- 1:13:51manufacturers parts. So if you're in the market at
- 1:13:54all for Apex Seals or the thing I saw that you were pulling up
- 1:13:57on your Instagram before is Studs, that stud kit they got
- 1:14:00for for connecting all of them together, they make them, you
- 1:14:04guys make. Those for make stud kits.
- 1:14:07For the 12A we make stuck kids. For the 13 B we make stuck kids.
- 1:14:11For the 20B we make stuck kids for the full rotor, 13B We make
- 1:14:15stuck kids. For the full rotor 12A We make
- 1:14:17stuck kids for the wait. Wait, wait.
- 1:14:19There's a four rotor 12A. Yes, if you buy 2 thin plates
- 1:14:22with a gear in it, we already have the studs for it.
- 1:14:24Just. To stack them.
- 1:14:24Solid dolphins. For each one, we have the stud
- 1:14:27kit for the 12A short block, and we have the stud kids for the
- 1:14:3113B short block. 20B short block.
- 1:14:34In other words, two thin plates. Guys who are watching would know
- 1:14:36what that is. And and like and again, like you
- 1:14:39just heard how goopy was fucking R&D ING this shit.
- 1:14:42I would trust anything I would buy from you.
- 1:14:44Yeah, I mean, you're challenging.
- 1:14:45You'd be taking engines. How many times you think you
- 1:14:47pulled the engine out before? Bro, the R&D, he said.
- 1:14:49He was driving them for three hours.
- 1:14:50You got to pull it up. I feel that you.
- 1:14:52I feel that you've pulled a million.
- 1:14:53Thirteen bees out by now. As much as I've done this, all
- 1:14:57the people that I've done more than me.
- 1:14:58Yeah, you know. I I'm grateful for, you know,
- 1:15:01where I landed and the opportunities God has.
- 1:15:05You know, giving me and people that I've met, you know, it's it
- 1:15:08really has been the grace of God.
- 1:15:09It really has been the grace of God.
- 1:15:10There's no way that I could have been, I would have been able to
- 1:15:13like, orchestrate, organize me meeting this guy and that guy
- 1:15:16and working here. Like some of it's like fate.
- 1:15:18Like that's. Oh, absolutely.
- 1:15:20The Bible says Romans 828, and we know that all things work
- 1:15:23together for he who loves God and been called according to his
- 1:15:25purpose. So there's no coincidence in
- 1:15:27anything. That's Romans 828, you know?
- 1:15:29So I know that everything that I did had like a purpose.
- 1:15:33You know what I mean? And.
- 1:15:34And. And now I'm starting to see more
- 1:15:36like, Gee, now I want, I remember now why I worked there.
- 1:15:39I worked at The Body Shop, right.
- 1:15:40And at The Body Shop I used to remove quarter panels.
- 1:15:43So you'd be there drilling out the spot wells one by one.
- 1:15:46And that was the old gun with the spot Rd. cutter in the
- 1:15:50middle. And OK, so this is a Dodge
- 1:15:52truck. No problem.
- 1:15:53OK. I could, you know, 300 spot
- 1:15:55wells. Mercedes are coming.
- 1:15:57Oh my God, they got a spot Weld every half inch now.
- 1:15:59Now you have 500 and just one quarter panel.
- 1:16:02So you kind of already knew that.
- 1:16:04I would put the engine on the car liner, clamp it, you know it
- 1:16:07was so. But all that allowed me to learn
- 1:16:10this. The scrap yard, the junkyard
- 1:16:12business I ran at one time made me learn.
- 1:16:14This made you learn parts to learn.
- 1:16:16This I worked. Selling the software allowed me
- 1:16:18to do this. It was it was interesting.
- 1:16:20You got like, a taste of everything.
- 1:16:22I did, man. It was just a blessing.
- 1:16:23And I was always hustling. I was always like, damn, it's
- 1:16:25gotta be aware. I was always hustling.
- 1:16:27Yeah, yeah. So you have a very interesting
- 1:16:29story. Yeah, it's like again, it's
- 1:16:32just. Over the years you get gain
- 1:16:34certain skill sets. It's not easy you know.
- 1:16:36Yeah. So then I, you know you design
- 1:16:38the parts and you go to. I would I designed my parts.
- 1:16:41I'd go to the track in Puerto Rico, Salinas, Speedway.
- 1:16:43I go to speed shops. I go to all the little repair
- 1:16:45shops that did Rotary in New York, Florida, California.
- 1:16:50I went to California Hung met Mohan out there 7 stock and and
- 1:16:56Florida and met all the guys in Florida.
- 1:16:58All the big names for last 20 years in Puerto Rico.
- 1:17:01You named the name that. Hold parts of them and Gnome had
- 1:17:03talks with them whatever track in Puerto Rico here in Atco.
- 1:17:07And you know what they would tell me the, you know, you know
- 1:17:12you're trying to sell them a brand and sell them apart And in
- 1:17:15the early days and remember there was none of this.
- 1:17:17You know, all sensitive stuff. You know early 2000 they'd be
- 1:17:20like, yeah, that's a piece of shit.
- 1:17:21That is not good, man. How much you want 200?
- 1:17:24I'll give you 150. Take it or leave it, you know.
- 1:17:26Yeah, yeah. People were rough.
- 1:17:27I had to deal with a lot of, you know.
- 1:17:30Lot of lumps, you know what I mean?
- 1:17:31So to get to where I am today, I had to go through the ringer,
- 1:17:34you know. So today, folks starting a
- 1:17:35business, they want to start whatever business they're in.
- 1:17:37You know, most people give up three months.
- 1:17:39Oh, this guy called me fat. Oh, this guy said I'm no good.
- 1:17:44Yeah, well, it's even. Worse, it's even worse with the
- 1:17:47Internet. This is a doggie dog world.
- 1:17:49You know what I mean? So now you add the Internet to
- 1:17:51it and now they can talk shit and you only have to see them.
- 1:17:53Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was like.
- 1:17:56Yeah, I don't know. You're right.
- 1:17:57They go on the Internet and talk bad about.
- 1:17:59You. Yeah.
- 1:17:59And you know they're not worried about it, cuz they're just
- 1:18:01sitting at home you ain't gonna do anything about.
- 1:18:03It the shitty thing is, unfortunately, some.
- 1:18:06Unfortunately, those kids are sometimes the people with the
- 1:18:08most money that'll support your. Business sometimes, but yes and
- 1:18:11no, you can't really, really you can't, you can't let anybody
- 1:18:14drive you like that though. I thought about that one time
- 1:18:16because I had a few customers that big money customers that
- 1:18:18kind of didn't want to do business with me no more and
- 1:18:20stuff like that. And I was like, damn, should I
- 1:18:21go home and have a pity party? Nah, don't worry about it.
- 1:18:24Just continue doing what you're doing right.
- 1:18:26Continue building a clientele and a customer base.
- 1:18:29I've had people talk about about me online and stuff, but I had
- 1:18:31enough of the good guys that I've done that are that.
- 1:18:35I have clientele customers that I've had for years.
- 1:18:39Yeah, I was going to say. Again, Jonathan, just send me
- 1:18:41this. You got my credit card.
- 1:18:42Just charge me. I don't care.
- 1:18:43Get it over. And I have customers that love
- 1:18:45me, that they didn't know what I'm about, right?
- 1:18:48Yeah, they know what I'm about. They love me.
- 1:18:49And they've always defended me. I was.
- 1:18:50Going to say what works for us is we're just extremely honest
- 1:18:53and straight up, OK, like that's how we.
- 1:18:55Like the ball doesn't lie. The ball literally does not lie.
- 1:18:58Like, oh, how much you think this is going to cost A lot.
- 1:19:01So I don't know if you want to do it.
- 1:19:03You know, instead of like, Oh well, you know, we'll make,
- 1:19:05yeah, we'll make it work. It won't be that bad.
- 1:19:07And then they come pick it up and they're like, what the fuck
- 1:19:08is this? I'd rather lose the job,
- 1:19:10honestly, than deal with that. Like, dude, it's it's crazy.
- 1:19:13But would you? Say twice.
- 1:19:14Cut once in this business. Yeah, I was going to say.
- 1:19:17But at the same time, are you scared?
- 1:19:19You're like not losing the shots you never took.
- 1:19:21I never think Wayne Gretzky. I never think that way.
- 1:19:24But. Hiring more people and stuff.
- 1:19:26Maybe I will start to think that way.
- 1:19:27I don't know. You know, because I've done this
- 1:19:29so safe. I've never took a leap of faith.
- 1:19:31I've worked up to this point very, very slowly.
- 1:19:33You know, I never really like, oh, let me just take a loan out
- 1:19:37and now I got to pay it back. I never did that.
- 1:19:40So up to this point, it's like, oh, just.
- 1:19:43Well, I feel like recently you're taking risks.
- 1:19:45More. Yeah, Which I'm kind of nervous
- 1:19:46about. That's fine.
- 1:19:48Here we are. Fine.
- 1:19:49It's a, it's. Look how many hardships I'm sure
- 1:19:51Goopies gone through. Dude, you know, everybody in
- 1:19:54every business. They have gone through their
- 1:19:55challenges. Yeah, everybody, every business.
- 1:19:58You got to dig your heels in deep and just move forward,
- 1:20:01continue trekking. Yeah.
- 1:20:02And like, just have faith in what you're doing.
- 1:20:04Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that everything's going to
- 1:20:06just work. Out.
- 1:20:07Do what you do. Well, that's all.
- 1:20:09Yeah. You know, there's always going
- 1:20:11to be dirt bags in every business.
- 1:20:12Yeah, that's the other thing, like, you know what some people
- 1:20:14say? They say if you, if you never
- 1:20:16had anyone talk bad about, you're not doing enough
- 1:20:18business. Okay.
- 1:20:19Because what they're saying is eventually you're gonna run into
- 1:20:22those people, no matter how nice you are.
- 1:20:24You know what I mean? So I get it.
- 1:20:26I get the point. But you still try your hardest.
- 1:20:29That's when it happened. If you don't have any haters,
- 1:20:30you're probably not doing. See that's.
- 1:20:32The same thing. You're not pushing hard enough.
- 1:20:34Yeah, I'm sure there's people out there who think this podcast
- 1:20:36is shot we don't really talk about.
- 1:20:38Well, this one, this one, I've been joining us thoroughly.
- 1:20:40Just cuz like, yeah, dude. We didn't know what to.
- 1:20:43Expect I didn't expect anything because I'm like.
- 1:20:45All I knew is you worked on rotaries you.
- 1:20:47Looked on you, worked on rotaries.
- 1:20:48On our website. And again.
- 1:20:50Some people perform us on Instagram.
- 1:20:52My website is is real. It's it's real lame because I
- 1:20:55had a real good website at one time.
- 1:20:56I've had a few guys coming in to help me with my website over the
- 1:20:59years and. I'll be the.
- 1:21:00I'll be the judge of this. I think it's.
- 1:21:01Going to be so my website sucks, It's just my direction.
- 1:21:04I have to completely redo the website.
- 1:21:07But it's a drag car, which I want to ask about.
- 1:21:09What did you, how did you, how was your like racing?
- 1:21:13Like you're using all your own parts, so that's like your
- 1:21:15number one marketing. Tech you see on our website
- 1:21:17there, That's what that's I've owned that car for years.
- 1:21:20I've had that car for about 15 years.
- 1:21:23I bought that car down in South Jersey.
- 1:21:24What's that run on the quarter? Pleasant.
- 1:21:27I remember the guy sold me that car and we went down to pick it
- 1:21:30up when it was all stock and. The guy said.
- 1:21:33I don't know. We pay like 500 bucks for it or
- 1:21:34something. And the guy's like, yeah, go
- 1:21:36ahead, take it. He gave it to us with plates and
- 1:21:38registration and everything. How?
- 1:21:40How many years ago was it? A long time, like in 2005, 2006.
- 1:21:44He's like, take the car, man, Just mail me the plates.
- 1:21:47I'm like, what? That's like, yeah.
- 1:21:49That literally, that was a thing.
- 1:21:51Frankie. This is a thing.
- 1:21:52Yeah. Yo, that this is a thing.
- 1:21:53Because my dad was like, anytime, be careful when you
- 1:21:56sell your car. Yes, take the plates off.
- 1:21:57Take the plates. I'm like, why wouldn't I take
- 1:22:00the place, Dad? Like, I see he signed a bill of
- 1:22:02sale in the title. That's gone.
- 1:22:03This guy. Did everything.
- 1:22:05Gave us everything, I said. Oh my God, that was a good omen,
- 1:22:07though I said OK, this is a good.
- 1:22:08That was a blessing. So then we drove the car home
- 1:22:11and it was an all motor car at one time.
- 1:22:14We used to run an all motor nitrous island drag way.
- 1:22:16Do you? Remember what it would run.
- 1:22:17Yeah, I think we ran 11. Oh, with that car.
- 1:22:20It's still fast as shit. OK, so so I'm on your website.
- 1:22:23I like it. It makes me feel like it's old
- 1:22:25school, so I like it. Yeah.
- 1:22:26But can I can I purchase your parts on here or do I have to?
- 1:22:29Go no, I have to work on that. OK.
- 1:22:31Because I was going to say if you put those apex seals up.
- 1:22:34I could I? Feel like they were still like I
- 1:22:36have so much upgrade, I have so much.
- 1:22:38How do you how do you go about selling?
- 1:22:39People come to my shop by, they e-mail us. e-mail us is the best
- 1:22:42they there's an. E-mail Frankie's a big.
- 1:22:44E-mail Yeah, no, you have a contact thing on here and.
- 1:22:46Facebook or. Is your Instagram.
- 1:22:49I kind of make it hard to find me cuz if you.
- 1:22:50Really wanna. Find me.
- 1:22:51You know what? You're gonna have to work hard.
- 1:22:53That's. What?
- 1:22:54Cuz I'm not you do. I'm not even.
- 1:22:55No, I don't. Yes, you do.
- 1:22:56You're like, e-mail us. Don't DM me, e-mail us.
- 1:22:59Okay. And that aspect, yes.
- 1:23:01Phone. I do phone.
- 1:23:03Phone. We try to pick up as much as we
- 1:23:04can, but when we're busy, I really can't pick up every phone
- 1:23:07call. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:08I kind of like. That.
- 1:23:09Talk to Sometimes people call you and they want to tell you
- 1:23:12the life, yeah. And they want to stay on the
- 1:23:13phone for 20 minutes and you're like, dude.
- 1:23:15I've been good at it, have I not?
- 1:23:16I'll let you know. But I'm just saying like.
- 1:23:18How much for this? How much for that?
- 1:23:20Like we in our business is literally time is money.
- 1:23:23Literally, especially in yes, absolutely.
- 1:23:26So it's like I'm on the phone for 20 minutes.
- 1:23:28There's some companies that don't even have a phone you
- 1:23:30can't even call. Yeah, Facebook.
- 1:23:32Facebook. Facebook's one of them.
- 1:23:34There's. A lot of companies that don't
- 1:23:35even have a phone number, you can't even.
- 1:23:36Call. Did I remember I got screwed on
- 1:23:37Facebook once I was like. I'll just call it customer
- 1:23:39service. You know what a lot of times.
- 1:23:41No customer service on Facebook. It's the biggest company on It's
- 1:23:43a chanted Earth. Most people e-mail the emails.
- 1:23:45How much is this? OK, here.
- 1:23:46I'll invoice you out the door. You go.
- 1:23:48No, that's great in your case and in my case, when we're doing
- 1:23:51a big builds, If it's five, ten, $20,000, bro, I want to see you.
- 1:23:55Yeah, yeah, 10 grand, 20,000. You're going to come to my shop.
- 1:23:58We're going to talk about this. What do you want to do?
- 1:24:00Boom, boom. Here to put a name with a face,
- 1:24:02right? You press the flesh, all right.
- 1:24:04Let's talk about this. Okay.
- 1:24:05No problem, Yeah. And then maybe not over e-mail
- 1:24:07for that. Because you know why this now
- 1:24:10the fella who wants to work on his S13 and do 2, you know.
- 1:24:15Yeah, 2J or two. J or Swapper or what's the other
- 1:24:19Nissan? Motor.
- 1:24:19That's our twenty man. Come on, you gotta remember
- 1:24:21this. The bigger motor RB.
- 1:24:23Yeah, say they want to do an RB swap or the transmission airbags
- 1:24:25and say it's a big job. You're like, yo, dude, for
- 1:24:28something like that you're gonna have to come in here.
- 1:24:29Leave me a deposit. We're gonna have to talk.
- 1:24:31I'm gonna make sure you're. Make sure you're a real person.
- 1:24:34Yes, yeah, go from there. Yeah, no, I you can't.
- 1:24:37You can't just. Accept I feel more comfortable.
- 1:24:39I usually. What I usually do is I go, OK,
- 1:24:41let's plan this out. I'll make a parts list.
- 1:24:44OK, here's the first bill, all the parts.
- 1:24:46And I'll be like, whoa, like, well, you want to build the
- 1:24:50whole car, you got to pay for the parts.
- 1:24:52Yeah, you know. There's there is a part of me
- 1:24:56though, that likes it like that the way you have it.
- 1:24:58Make it a little hard because then now you.
- 1:25:01And if anybody could reach out to you, you're gonna get so much
- 1:25:03trash. Yeah, and garbage like at your
- 1:25:05door and. It's hard.
- 1:25:07For me, I'm just thinking about the parts.
- 1:25:08Yeah, you don't because it's just challenging to run the
- 1:25:11business and social media and parts.
- 1:25:13We have a full machine shop. So I'm always, if I'm on the
- 1:25:15mill or lathe, my dad works with me, have two more guys and one
- 1:25:20guy has to be disassembled and cleaning.
- 1:25:21Remember we do engines, do transmission repair, machining,
- 1:25:26semi peripheral, port, rear ends.
- 1:25:30A lot, lot of stuff. We're going to come up to your
- 1:25:32shot one day, so a little. Shop toward What's the.
- 1:25:34What's the point? So not to change the subject,
- 1:25:38but like. I want to know.
- 1:25:39Semi like I always hear Bridgeport, Sammy, Bridgeport or
- 1:25:44what is exactly going on? The way the air goes into the
- 1:25:47motor. OK.
- 1:25:48Can you guys know that brap, right?
- 1:25:49That sound everybody? Likes that brap.
- 1:25:51The Cam sound OK You could do that with the Bridgeport or a
- 1:25:54semi or peripheral port. And those are the ports that are
- 1:25:57around. Yeah, the ports that are on the
- 1:25:59plates, you do a like a little eyebrow cut they call it.
- 1:26:02That's a bitch. A semi would be in the.
- 1:26:04It'll go through the rotor housing and small little
- 1:26:07incision. I got like a one inch.
- 1:26:08Yeah, it's like an extra. Port right.
- 1:26:10And it goes into the intake, so. What the hell?
- 1:26:13And there's three different types or.
- 1:26:15There's like this a semi St. yeah.
- 1:26:17Like four, I think, or four. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:19That shit is cool to me. Yeah.
- 1:26:21Yeah, like you literally alter the way the air is going into
- 1:26:24the fucking motor. But it's not like a normal like
- 1:26:27on our. On a piston engine, you port it
- 1:26:29or you port the intake, right? And like the exhaust, yeah, what
- 1:26:33takes. It's kind of the same.
- 1:26:35It's. Kind of the it's the same.
- 1:26:36One thing about the Rotary engine that if you know folks
- 1:26:38that don't know is the Rotary engine.
- 1:26:40You can't bore the Rotary engine out.
- 1:26:42No, no, you can't add more displacement or take out of.
- 1:26:45It it all depends on. How big the?
- 1:26:46So the Rotary engine is a 1.3 liter engine, the 13 B, that's
- 1:26:501.3 liters. You know, there's arguments that
- 1:26:53the crankshaft speeds, that the rotor spends 3 times.
- 1:26:57And that for every 3rd of a time, for every time it fires
- 1:27:00three times, cuz there's three chambers in the rotor.
- 1:27:02So there is that argument out there, and some people that
- 1:27:04argument fight at the coffee shops and fight left and right
- 1:27:09about. But the crankshaft spins, that
- 1:27:12the rotor spin at 1/3 the speed of the crankshaft.
- 1:27:14So if the crankshafts at 9000, the rotors are at 3000, so it's
- 1:27:18not 1 to 1. So then there's that argument.
- 1:27:20But still even though even besides that.
- 1:27:24It's still a 1.3 liter motor and those motors now are making
- 1:27:27over. I think there was one that made
- 1:27:28over 1700 horsepower or 1600. That's and it's just weird
- 1:27:33because of Three, because they're just throwing more
- 1:27:36technology at this thing to make.
- 1:27:38More for Cubic Kings I think. This motor makes more horsepower
- 1:27:40than any motor I think. Probably. 100 I would believe.
- 1:27:43Them it's a very inexpensive motor.
- 1:27:46The Rotary engine. It's an expensive engine to make
- 1:27:49the power. I I want, I need.
- 1:27:50I gotta ask because I I told my buddy that I would ask about RX.
- 1:27:54Question. You can ask people if they want
- 1:27:55to ask questions. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:56We have some later. But the But RX8 is when that
- 1:27:59came out, because that's coming out now, like you're you're
- 1:28:03messing around with rotaries, you're messing around with apex
- 1:28:05seals. And then the RX8 comes in.
- 1:28:07Yes, a new Rotary. Right.
- 1:28:08What was that like when that came out for you?
- 1:28:10Was that like a oh, this this is all right.
- 1:28:12Like it's not that great. Or I didn't.
- 1:28:13Look at it from that perspective.
- 1:28:14I looked at it. Oh, cool, the Mazda continues.
- 1:28:16Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:28:17OK, good. Yeah, it was kind of bummed out
- 1:28:19that it was non turbo and it wasn't.
- 1:28:21It was non, you know, naturally aspirated and stuff 4 door.
- 1:28:24Is that a good engine? Is that a good engine out?
- 1:28:26There it has its purposes. Oh, OK.
- 1:28:29A lot of people say it's a terrible car, the RXA, but I
- 1:28:31don't think so. I think the RXA was built for
- 1:28:33our purpose and for a reason and and what they intended to do,
- 1:28:36they did with that RXA. Yeah, I mean, it was a pretty
- 1:28:39well handling car. I don't.
- 1:28:40An amazing thrift car, yeah. I think it's a.
- 1:28:42It's amazing. Got big breaks, big calipers.
- 1:28:44People buy that car to me, turn it into a Rd.
- 1:28:47Yeah. They don't even have to upgrade
- 1:28:48the brakes. Yeah, they handle great.
- 1:28:51They're 54 or. 477, yeah. Yeah, something like that. 6
- 1:28:54speed. Yeah, it's a six.
- 1:28:55Speed and and they sound. Great they sound.
- 1:28:58It's a nice chassis for you. They're inexpensive.
- 1:29:00You could buy one inexpensive. Yeah, they're cheap.
- 1:29:03So you could buy one for 500. Everybody thinks, oh, I wanna
- 1:29:05buy one for 500 bucks. Go spend 200 bucks and get it
- 1:29:07running. Everybody thinks that.
- 1:29:09I don't. I'd be scared.
- 1:29:11What? Does it turn out to be?
- 1:29:13No, it turns out to be a little bit more, but just people have
- 1:29:15just like this. I don't know.
- 1:29:16I don't know what's happened. Like the average person
- 1:29:18nowadays, it's like, it's it's crazy.
- 1:29:21Sometimes I clown them on Instagram and stuff like that.
- 1:29:23They call me and like, oh, I want to do a build and I'll
- 1:29:25message him, well, how much money you got?
- 1:29:27And they're like, oh, I got like 2 grand for for what?
- 1:29:30For what do you what do you want to do with 2000?
- 1:29:32Or I want to do a rebuild. OK You want a vacation with that
- 1:29:35too? You.
- 1:29:35Know. What else you want?
- 1:29:38You want to happy me with that too?
- 1:29:40I'll go to your house through your kitchen.
- 1:29:42Modify. You know your bathroom too.
- 1:29:44What else? Anything else?
- 1:29:46Let me know bro, I'm feeling good right now.
- 1:29:48Yeah, I didn't realize everything was so cheap.
- 1:29:50Feeling good and. Then sometimes, because you know
- 1:29:52what I see like this? Disrespectful.
- 1:29:54You're like, you're ignorant, bro.
- 1:29:56Yeah, you're an ignorant person. Yeah, And ignorant has a it's
- 1:29:59just you don't know any better, right?
- 1:30:00So go do some research, some homework before you get into
- 1:30:03stuff like this. It just makes you look foolish,
- 1:30:06Yeah. What about this?
- 1:30:08This is another myth that I hear about rotaries.
- 1:30:10Is it true that if you don't drive it hard?
- 1:30:14It will break more like you've got to Italian tune up it every
- 1:30:17so often, let it ring out, like drive it.
- 1:30:19Is that true as well? Like, does it prolong the life
- 1:30:23of your Rotary to drive it? Harder.
- 1:30:25Basically it's fouling out, I guess.
- 1:30:26If you don't, I don't know if you don't like, get on it.
- 1:30:29That's the layman's explanation on decarbonizer or.
- 1:30:33Cleaner, yeah. Yeah, that's what it is.
- 1:30:35A motor sits too long if the injectors drip or.
- 1:30:38Or there's a lot of Carbon built up.
- 1:30:39The RX states have a lot of Carbon built.
- 1:30:41Up on the road. Big time, Big time.
- 1:30:44Why is that? Mazda, if I'm not mistaken, when
- 1:30:47they went to the RX8 engine they took the exhaust port and
- 1:30:51instead of being on the rotor housing now it's on the iron,
- 1:30:54yes. So the gases have to do like 180
- 1:30:56degree turn like leave this way as opposed to coming out the
- 1:30:58exhaust where in the previous engines when the exhaust was in
- 1:31:02the housing. Gas burned or not, came out the
- 1:31:05exhaust and went out the exhaust.
- 1:31:07Now the gases will. Yeah, they pretty much got, it's
- 1:31:10gotta get, like, sucked out the side.
- 1:31:11It's not. It goes into the next cycle and
- 1:31:14it go and it burns again. Almost like an EGR valve.
- 1:31:16A built in EGR valve. Yeah, so it's.
- 1:31:19So that's why the RXA burns very clean and it comes to a complete
- 1:31:23burn and the carbon stays inside.
- 1:31:25So that's. Probably why they did it one.
- 1:31:27Of the reasons. So then the side seals get
- 1:31:29filled with carbon, the whole motor.
- 1:31:31You can take a motor with 5000 miles apart.
- 1:31:33And it's full of carbon. And it's like, yo, dude, this
- 1:31:35thing is brand new. Yeah, but it gets full of
- 1:31:37carbon. So then guys use sea foam
- 1:31:39through the intake. Or, you know, I know some people
- 1:31:42put diesel or it's something to clean the carbon on the inside.
- 1:31:46Go go down the highway and just hit it hard.
- 1:31:48It's gonna smoke like a freight train, but then you know,
- 1:31:50that'll clean the engine. Out.
- 1:31:51Was that one of the main differences between because it's
- 1:31:53still 13 B, but it's a that's. One of the main reasons?
- 1:31:55The resistance. But there was a six, not a six,
- 1:31:58but there was a there was like a.
- 1:32:00Updated version of the Renesis. Yeah, there was a serious one
- 1:32:02and a serious. Two.
- 1:32:03Yes, there was a few. Little subtle changes, but for
- 1:32:06the engine was basically. The engine was kind of basically
- 1:32:08the. Same, the main change was
- 1:32:09probably that port. One of the main ones was
- 1:32:11probably that port change. The port change was the primary.
- 1:32:13I think it was 2004. Remember when the RSA being
- 1:32:16released into the United States? During that time they had these
- 1:32:18outrageous emission laws, emissions laws, and they had to.
- 1:32:22Meet certain specifications. You know that the RSA was Car of
- 1:32:25the Year motor track Motor Trend.
- 1:32:26It was it. Was on the color bro.
- 1:32:29They used to put a They used to put a wine glass on top of the
- 1:32:32motor and say hey look how, how? Steady it is.
- 1:32:34Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:32:35So they were praising that car in 2003, 2004 and I don't think
- 1:32:39it was you know Nepotism or Mazda paying off the and you I
- 1:32:42don't you know there was a nice copy.
- 1:32:44We were looking forward to it. I I think they're today.
- 1:32:46You know, people are like, oh, that's a crappy car button.
- 1:32:48Now I drove one. Of your cars that you built.
- 1:32:51It was Angel's car that he sold to Greg, and it was a RX8.
- 1:32:57That shit. That was my only Rotary I ever
- 1:32:59drove. You built that RX8.
- 1:33:02Yeah, that shit was fun as hell. What the fuck?
- 1:33:04I. Didn't know that.
- 1:33:05Yeah, he showed up to my house. It's idling in a driveway.
- 1:33:08I'm like, what the fuck is this? I don't know anything about
- 1:33:12Rotary. I always tell Chris I want a
- 1:33:13Rotary and he's like and this is.
- 1:33:15One thing that that gets me, a lot of time people will talk bad
- 1:33:19about the RXA and stuff like that and say the RXA is no good
- 1:33:22and I'm like all right, but the RXA is non turbo, yeah still a
- 1:33:281.3 liter makes about 200 horsepower, decent torque if not
- 1:33:32a little bit more and they can take a four door car that weighs
- 1:33:35almost £3000 and I've seen some people push about, you know.
- 1:33:40I think with that particular car, they did 160 miles an hour
- 1:33:43with that car. That's unheard of, 160 unheard
- 1:33:46of with a turbo tour or 93 stock car.
- 1:33:49Well, like a 1.3 liter, that's power per liter.
- 1:33:52That is high. Where was what's making that,
- 1:33:55you know, and I talked to some of my friends in Puerto Rico.
- 1:33:57We have, I know a lot of drag races and stuff and when we
- 1:33:59talk, Oh my God, oh what do you think about this ratio or this
- 1:34:01guy did this a 60 foot blah, blah.
- 1:34:03We go on and on and on and they go, they praise the ratio on the
- 1:34:06RSA, they're like, Oh my God, that RSA has amazing ratio the
- 1:34:09timing. Things down 50 degrees, 60
- 1:34:12degrees, the computer and in other words.
- 1:34:15So they like it. So what I'm saying is that when
- 1:34:17Mazda designed and made the RXA, they made it with a specific
- 1:34:20purpose. Yeah, right, that it does this,
- 1:34:23this, this and this and this and it just works.
- 1:34:26There you go. Take it for us gear heads where
- 1:34:28we want to buy it and start modifying and doing stuff to
- 1:34:31make more horsepower. It's challenging with the RXA
- 1:34:33because the computer controls everything.
- 1:34:36You remove the meter and pump. It goes into lip mode and all
- 1:34:38sorts of stuff. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:34:39But Mazda wasn't thinking about you and I when they were
- 1:34:42building that car. They were thinking about Mr.
- 1:34:44Jones over there. Let me just sell him a sports
- 1:34:45car so he could. Yeah.
- 1:34:47Cruise around, put it back in his garage.
- 1:34:49So. Are there any aftermarket
- 1:34:51solutions for? Yeah, they are.
- 1:34:52There's a lot of. You could probably stand alone
- 1:34:54for that. Thing.
- 1:34:55You can make it happen. You can make it happen.
- 1:34:56You can make it happen. You just.
- 1:34:57You have to work, you know. You just.
- 1:34:59Different ways to get it. Done.
- 1:35:01How do they react to turbocharging?
- 1:35:03Are they the? I was gonna ask the same thing,
- 1:35:05like can you boost that engine? You can.
- 1:35:07You can. Cuz I know they used to make
- 1:35:09turbo kits for that, but well, someone probably still does.
- 1:35:11But I know I think Gretti did, Gretti did and then it
- 1:35:13disappeared or something. Pineapple.
- 1:35:15No, no, not the guy down in Florida, Petty.
- 1:35:17I remember Petty had a turbo kit for that years ago.
- 1:35:19I'd seen him at 7 stock. They had a turbo kit.
- 1:35:21This is like. 15 years, 10 years ago, 15.
- 1:35:24Years. Yeah.
- 1:35:24And then. And then the turbos disappeared.
- 1:35:26I guess everyone's done with that.
- 1:35:28That that would be sick. A turbo RX8.
- 1:35:30Yeah, that's. That's why there's not much,
- 1:35:32there's not that much room in the engine Bay.
- 1:35:34It's pretty challenge. It's pretty tight, yeah.
- 1:35:35Really, I feel like when you look at the RXA and the nose is
- 1:35:38so long I would just assume. To get in the exhaust sign is
- 1:35:41it? You gotta work hard.
- 1:35:42It could be done. Listen.
- 1:35:45If you got a credit card, yeah, yeah, credit card.
- 1:35:47What's your What's your preferred 13 be because you
- 1:35:51there's three different. 4-4 different versions.
- 1:35:54That's probably a but don't. Look at me for confirmation on
- 1:35:56that. Yeah, I.
- 1:35:57Don't know. Like is there do you have a
- 1:35:58favorite one or you just like, yeah, they're all yeah.
- 1:36:00They all have their pros and cons, OK, yeah.
- 1:36:03I'm beyond that already. Like, what was my favorite?
- 1:36:06Yeah. I just wanna make money, sell
- 1:36:08parts and. That's it.
- 1:36:08Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:36:10So, so if people, if people call you and they want their their
- 1:36:15engine built, what's like that? Do you have like I was thinking
- 1:36:18about this earlier. Do you have like?
- 1:36:20Packages you offer like we're gonna do this, we're gonna do
- 1:36:22this, we're gonna do this. Like certain parts you put in,
- 1:36:24No, I've. Seen some people do that and
- 1:36:26stuff I don't do. That I've always thought about
- 1:36:28doing that too. Customers come.
- 1:36:30I don't know. I guess sometimes when you've
- 1:36:32been doing this for such a long time, after a while you just
- 1:36:35wanna make it quick. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:36:36Just wanna make it quick, chit chat what you want.
- 1:36:38Okay, but I get the hell out. Yeah.
- 1:36:40So. That's literally.
- 1:36:42I get what you're saying, but. Wanna eat?
- 1:36:45Yeah, do. This I gotta go see my kids or
- 1:36:47whatever, so. I guess I'm asking more so
- 1:36:49because I don't know the Rotary world that well, and to me it
- 1:36:53doesn't seem like there's too many parts involved in it, so I
- 1:36:57feel like whatever you use is probably very specific to your
- 1:37:01build. What happens with the Rotary
- 1:37:03engine, What I noticed with the Rotary engine is in the
- 1:37:05customers with in my type of business is if you let the
- 1:37:09customer talk he'll be there forever telling you about this.
- 1:37:12About that what do you think about this questions he going to
- 1:37:14tell you about the car he had in middle school?
- 1:37:17He bought this car and then he bought another seven in high
- 1:37:20school and I got arrested with this one.
- 1:37:21And I and I had sex with my wife and this sea and this and that
- 1:37:24and and all sorts of dumb stuff. And I'm like, dude, I don't want
- 1:37:28to hear all your. What do you want, bro?
- 1:37:29What do you want? So then sometimes, you know,
- 1:37:32sometimes I I love, you know, if I'm at a car show, car me OK,
- 1:37:35let's chitchat. That's what I'm here for, you
- 1:37:37know. But sometimes when I'm busy, I'm
- 1:37:39like, so then. What do you need?
- 1:37:41What power? The average kid comes into our
- 1:37:44shop and what he wants is the brap.
- 1:37:46That's. What he wants.
- 1:37:47Oh my God, it's like, at least like the verbal tune of your
- 1:37:49world I. Think it tough of a lot of the.
- 1:37:50Verbal tune of our oh listen, I want to.
- 1:37:52Build my engine. Can you do what do you want?
- 1:37:57You want the brap, right? OK, yeah.
- 1:37:58Just give me the deposit by leaving the motor.
- 1:38:00I'll have it done. But can you do this bearing And
- 1:38:02yeah, yeah, trust me. So you know.
- 1:38:05And that's like that's like Goopy's version of.
- 1:38:08Verbal tune. Yes, yes.
- 1:38:10So I'm like, hey, I'm going to do it.
- 1:38:11So just. Just get out.
- 1:38:13I know what I'm doing, So what they want like a certain port.
- 1:38:15No, that, yeah, that that sound. The, you know, the Bridgeport
- 1:38:18sound. People love that.
- 1:38:19That that sound is iconic, bro. Now, but doesn't that make it
- 1:38:22unreliable sometimes for the? No, that's a lie.
- 1:38:25That's a lie. You heard that?
- 1:38:26Yeah, that. Was a big thing.
- 1:38:27Here, that was going to repent. I want you to repent.
- 1:38:30All right, all right. I take it back.
- 1:38:32I repent. Please forgive me.
- 1:38:33I repent. Yeah, he repented live.
- 1:38:35He's a lie. Yeah, no, I like those lies.
- 1:38:40Well, you're never in a church called No, no.
- 1:38:42No, I have because I have a pen. Yeah, it's a lie.
- 1:38:44I like that you asked that question because now.
- 1:38:48I I don't have it too. No, I wanted to know that
- 1:38:50because that's what people that's what people say.
- 1:38:52No, like people hear that and automatically assume the car is
- 1:38:55like shit. Yeah, we've we've.
- 1:38:57Dropped bridge ports before for a lot of miles and semis and all
- 1:39:01sorts of stuff, you know, But The thing is this look, The
- 1:39:03thing is this. The thing is that the average
- 1:39:05person that builds performance. So I want a 500 horsepower car
- 1:39:09and 600. You know, I wanna cruise it, but
- 1:39:11beat it, hit it once in a while. That's what they all say.
- 1:39:13I wanna hit it once in a while. OK, so you want 700 horsepower,
- 1:39:17right? All right.
- 1:39:18No problem, dude. That's not going to last 25,000
- 1:39:21miles because chances are you're going to damage something.
- 1:39:23You're going to hit a tree, You're going to do something
- 1:39:25before the 20,000 miles comes up.
- 1:39:26You get what I'm saying? Yeah, dude, it's not going to
- 1:39:29make 20,000. It's not because of the motors,
- 1:39:30because of your stupidity. You're going to not change the
- 1:39:32filter. Do this, do that.
- 1:39:34Pop Rocks were fouled and you kept beating in on it or
- 1:39:37something like. That how many?
- 1:39:38Miles, check the clouds. Yes, that's what they do all the
- 1:39:40time. And tell them no.
- 1:39:42I don't want for any warranties or guarantees on any.
- 1:39:44To be honest, a lot of performance shops do not.
- 1:39:46And I know shops that are. Probably smart like.
- 1:39:48A lesson if they do but me, I don't do it bro.
- 1:39:51No, you can't. You can't really do that.
- 1:39:52You can't. You can't because this is like
- 1:39:54you know, the, the, the. You don't know what they're
- 1:39:56going to do with it. Not because they're going to
- 1:39:58take the the AutoZone mentality. You know, like they buy breaks
- 1:40:00that AutoZone with two year warranty and they bring it back
- 1:40:02at one year, 11 months and 29 days.
- 1:40:05Also, here's the Here's here's here's what's actually.
- 1:40:07You know what I'm talking about, right?
- 1:40:09You got AutoZone, you got a four year warranty at 3:00.
- 1:40:12Is 12 months like like December? Like 28?
- 1:40:15You're over at your brothers. The Battery's no good, bro.
- 1:40:17Oh, I'm gonna give you another one because then you got.
- 1:40:19That was me with my drift car battery.
- 1:40:21Every every year you got the brakes from your Honda.
- 1:40:24Let me get him bro. You got a warranty?
- 1:40:25You bring him back here, let me give you mine and I get those so
- 1:40:28then I don't have to pay for some.
- 1:40:30You're warranty dude, you have. Probably run into some.
- 1:40:32Characters. Man.
- 1:40:34Warranties are for this. Warranties are so that I can be
- 1:40:38irresponsible, so I could be stupid so I could blow it up.
- 1:40:42And he's going to pay for it because he said it's not going
- 1:40:44to break. That's what a warranty is.
- 1:40:46So if you get that out of your mentality and you tell folks
- 1:40:49you're, listen, I got no warranty, then that actually now
- 1:40:52that obliges the customer to be responsible.
- 1:40:55Yeah, that puts now a burden upon him.
- 1:40:58Now you as a customer, you can't be stupid.
- 1:41:00Don't call me, be like you're gooby this motor.
- 1:41:01Don't turn on and your battery is disconnected.
- 1:41:03You know what I'm saying? Now you have to put some vested
- 1:41:05interest in it. And then what I do is just allow
- 1:41:08you a good name to stand up for yourself.
- 1:41:10A customer has problem with me. Call me bro.
- 1:41:12Come to my shop. I'm gonna fix it.
- 1:41:14I'm gonna do it right because it's to my benefit.
- 1:41:16It's to my interest. If you made a mistake, you're.
- 1:41:18Fixing you're an idiot and you go on the Internet and you start
- 1:41:20blasting and you start complaining and asking this guy
- 1:41:22questions and not. And you didn't come to me first.
- 1:41:24And you know what? You're you cut.
- 1:41:25Yeah, you. In Spanish, the wasa cortala
- 1:41:28pattas, you know, that said I don't want to deal with you no
- 1:41:30more because now as opposed to coming to me, you went to all
- 1:41:32these other people asking everybody's opinion.
- 1:41:34We couldn't help you anyway. I couldn't.
- 1:41:35Help you anyway, so that's not right.
- 1:41:37You know, you're, you know, I'm sure you value your brand name,
- 1:41:42so someone you F up. I'm sure you're going to stand
- 1:41:45by it, you know? But if you ask, if you give
- 1:41:48people warranty, all that is is a is a permission for them to be
- 1:41:51irresponsible. No our our invoices say no
- 1:41:54warranties. On engine, any performance stuff
- 1:41:56is like that. Summit you buy from Summit.
- 1:41:58What does it say? No warranties, exchanges,
- 1:42:00nothing from anything. Because here's what they're
- 1:42:02gonna do. So you got they got your They
- 1:42:04get your engine built. They leave.
- 1:42:06Here they go. OK.
- 1:42:07All right. I got my boy.
- 1:42:08He's gonna tune it. You should probably bring it to
- 1:42:11our guy. No, no, no, no.
- 1:42:13Thanks, though. Bye.
- 1:42:14They bring it to their boy. They go get that nice verbal
- 1:42:17tune, all right, That's the first thing they do.
- 1:42:20Then they go and they go race it to the track every night.
- 1:42:23Never change the oil. Then they something breaks.
- 1:42:26They go to their other, their other friend.
- 1:42:28I could fix it for cheap. So then they get it serviced by
- 1:42:31someone else. And then in three years, four
- 1:42:32years, five years later, they call, yo, it's burning oil.
- 1:42:36What do you want me to do about it?
- 1:42:38You haven't. I haven't seen you in five
- 1:42:39years. I don't know where the cars
- 1:42:40been. Like, dude, if you're going to
- 1:42:42offer a warranty, you need to service your vehicle.
- 1:42:46At that shop, right? It needs to be tuned at that
- 1:42:49shop and every single thing needs to happen at that shop.
- 1:42:52And if it doesn't, I mean look, this is some.
- 1:42:55Rotary, bro. This is performance.
- 1:42:57This is Rotary. This is performing.
- 1:42:58I tell you again, this is not for everybody.
- 1:43:00Yeah, this is not for everybody. The Rotary game is not for
- 1:43:03everybody. The Nissan tool.
- 1:43:05And all this. Stuff.
- 1:43:06Yeah, it's expensive. You know who really messed this
- 1:43:08up? Vin Diesel.
- 1:43:09He ruined it, bro. Oh no.
- 1:43:10You're the first Diesel for vind one.
- 1:43:12Your fault, bro. You're the fifth one to say
- 1:43:14that. The Fast and the Furious Fucked.
- 1:43:15This shit, you messed it up. Y'all.
- 1:43:17Alright, let's hear more about this Vindy, How did Vin Diesel
- 1:43:19mess? It up.
- 1:43:20Why with the fast and the? Fast and the Furious, dude.
- 1:43:22It probably everyone was like. Come on, this guy.
- 1:43:24The rapper down down the ATL, What's his name?
- 1:43:27Ludacris, You and Luda. Get back.
- 1:43:34Because, I don't know, because they like through the they threw
- 1:43:37the JDM world, right? Like the JDM world.
- 1:43:40They threw it on TV and they made it look glam in this
- 1:43:44parking lot stealing stuff in back of trucks.
- 1:43:46That stuff is stupid. And then after the after that
- 1:43:50movie, people are calling nitrous knots, you know, and
- 1:43:53people are coming. You got knots in there.
- 1:43:54I'm like, oh man. I know people calling yo, you
- 1:44:01got Nas? Yeah, I used to have a nitrous
- 1:44:03bottle on my RX7. You know my other one.
- 1:44:05We used to go driving yo. You got Nas?
- 1:44:06I know it's. Be like fun.
- 1:44:09Don't ever say that again. Please stop it From now on, say
- 1:44:14Nitrous. Yeah, but I don't know, maybe he
- 1:44:16helps a lot of people get into rotaries with his.
- 1:44:18I know, I know, he probably he did, he did.
- 1:44:19He just say they just put it in it.
- 1:44:22I don't know how. It's on Front Street now after
- 1:44:25that movie. Yeah, it was on Front St. yes,
- 1:44:26yes, yes. Like it was, everyone knew about
- 1:44:29racing import cars. Yes, yes.
- 1:44:31Not now. But then once that came out, I
- 1:44:34feel like everybody's just like, oh, like the Fast, the Furious.
- 1:44:38Oh no, not like the fast. And the furious.
- 1:44:40Oh yeah, Like, you know, they like they just.
- 1:44:44Everybody will automatically assume like you're into that
- 1:44:46shit. Yeah, when really I'm just into
- 1:44:49building. Yeah, that put rice on the map.
- 1:44:50You put rice? I did.
- 1:44:54But then your fucking Rotary that they're talking shit about
- 1:44:57is running 7 seconds. Yeah, and their Camaro of that
- 1:45:01same era is running like a fucking 12.
- 1:45:04The Rotary engine bro. Is.
- 1:45:09Is a gift. It's just different, dude.
- 1:45:11It's just different. Yeah, I don't.
- 1:45:13Even know I can't even use Icon Iconic Iconic is to been used
- 1:45:16too much. I just like this.
- 1:45:18The spirit that the Rotary engine holds, the spirit of it,
- 1:45:22like the like the spirit of what the Rotary stands for.
- 1:45:24Like you just told me, everybody's grinding out,
- 1:45:27putting fucking diesel turbos and in a in an inner cooler from
- 1:45:31somewhere else and piping from here, piping from there.
- 1:45:33That's what I think the Rotary stands for.
- 1:45:35It's for people who like, want to maximize something.
- 1:45:38That's true. That really didn't have a lot to
- 1:45:42give you in the beginning. Yeah, I guess, yeah, that, yeah,
- 1:45:45displacement per size, yeah, probably.
- 1:45:46Yeah, yeah. And you're just you're.
- 1:45:48Just that would be the common denominator among all the Rotary
- 1:45:50guys, yes. Small motor, big horsepower,
- 1:45:53yeah, yeah. But the Rotary?
- 1:45:54Engine did come out of a the Rotary engine has a few
- 1:45:57different facets that I noticed since I was a kid in the 80s and
- 1:46:02I said nine or even 80s. Oh, a side note, you know that
- 1:46:04my dad used to work for my dad used to work for a here.
- 1:46:07We go. My dad used to work for a a
- 1:46:11exotic car repair shop in Mahwah, NJ in the early 80s when
- 1:46:15we were little kids. It was called La Monza Motors.
- 1:46:18La Monza, La Monza, Little Italian dude.
- 1:46:21And that Italian dude was friends with John de Lorean,
- 1:46:23bro. Really.
- 1:46:25Yes, yes. And my dad used to tell us these
- 1:46:27things and I used to be like we were little kids.
- 1:46:29We didn't know about that. And my dad would one time took
- 1:46:31us there. He actually, he used to drive
- 1:46:33some of the cars home to make sure they were in good shape.
- 1:46:35Yeah, he drove one time a Lotus Turbo S Spirit brand new on the.
- 1:46:39Bond car. And when I he took us there one
- 1:46:42time and where he they and to show us the cars because my dad
- 1:46:46used to turn tune like the Webers and they had like these
- 1:46:49you know side drives like. On the old.
- 1:46:52European cars. And they had a BMW M1 like the
- 1:46:56mid 80s. They had a wing on the back,
- 1:46:59yeah, and three, they had kind. Of wedge looking shit.
- 1:47:03Yeah, M1 was the one in the James Bond movie with.
- 1:47:05Lamborghini, they had a chap on there, a few cool tashas.
- 1:47:09That's some really exotic stuff that I was a kid and I was like.
- 1:47:11Do you think that's where your your passion?
- 1:47:13Started and I thought the cars were cool, but looking at it
- 1:47:15today I'm like, oh. My God.
- 1:47:16God, Dad. You know who you were around.
- 1:47:19Yeah. Oh my God, I wish I would have
- 1:47:20taken more pictures and shakes and carry me as a baby and.
- 1:47:25I said. No those this.
- 1:47:27And I was like, you know, that car, that stuff is gone.
- 1:47:28But he was just a mechanic. He was just fixing the cars.
- 1:47:31He didn't. He wasn't a car guy, you know?
- 1:47:33Yeah, And neither were we were riding BMX bikes.
- 1:47:35But it's interesting that that it's a small world that way.
- 1:47:38I don't know where that guy is. He might not even be alive
- 1:47:40anymore. You said it was in Ramsey.
- 1:47:41Mahwah, New Jersey Franklin Turnpike If somebody knows where
- 1:47:44that little Italian dude is, who knows.
- 1:47:46But he was friends with John de Lorean and I think, I think my
- 1:47:49dad might have met him out for. You.
- 1:47:50But I know exactly what I shops. Do you?
- 1:47:53Yeah. Oh, you do?
- 1:47:54Yeah. My I lived in Ramsey for a
- 1:47:56while. Franklin term.
- 1:47:57Like, actually really fucking close to Franklin Turnpike.
- 1:47:59So is the shop still a thing? I don't know if it's called
- 1:48:02Lamonza anymore. It's called.
- 1:48:05This is 30 years ago. I know it was, but the building
- 1:48:08is old as she's. Still there.
- 1:48:10It's got like 2 glass doors in the front.
- 1:48:11Yeah, Yep. Yeah.
- 1:48:12I know someone like someone listening to this podcast
- 1:48:14probably. Knows where that.
- 1:48:15Guy is. Yeah, but.
- 1:48:16That's, yeah, but that's. What the fuck?
- 1:48:19Like this? What was the question you asked
- 1:48:20before? I don't even know.
- 1:48:21I don't even know. You want to bust out some of
- 1:48:23these questions that we got. You can do that.
- 1:48:24Let's see. Let's see what we got today.
- 1:48:25I was telling you how there's multiple facets in the Rotary
- 1:48:28engine, right? Yes.
- 1:48:29All right. Yeah.
- 1:48:30So check this out. So 90s you have.
- 1:48:33I came out of the drag race scene.
- 1:48:35OK, so I was a little kid. I was like 14 and my older
- 1:48:39brother used to have a Firebird formula.
- 1:48:42He had the Super beetle and he had a Firebird 400 formula.
- 1:48:46And he was into like V8, my older brother, right.
- 1:48:48So he's older. He had a license.
- 1:48:49I had no license. He was.
- 1:48:51And and we would always like to hang out with him and his older
- 1:48:53friends. I was a little younger and my
- 1:48:56brother used to go to Hunts Point Drag Racing, which is in
- 1:48:58the Bronx, NY He's go racing on the weekends, at night, you
- 1:49:01know, hang out. And and I used to always be like
- 1:49:05take us, take me with you, take me with you.
- 1:49:07Now I go hang out with your friends.
- 1:49:08And you know a few times he did finally started taking us and
- 1:49:10stuff like that. And I started going with my
- 1:49:12brother. This is night racing, right?
- 1:49:14This started around 11:00 o'clock at night.
- 1:49:16They raced to like 6:00 in the morning.
- 1:49:18And that's the first time I went to a street race at night.
- 1:49:22And illegal activities, which I don't do anymore or condone.
- 1:49:25OK. We use the word allegedly over
- 1:49:27here. Illegal.
- 1:49:27I allegedly did that. One of my twin brother was
- 1:49:31there. Yeah.
- 1:49:31So then, so then I saw the Rotary and what I would see is I
- 1:49:36would see starlets, corollas, which is called candungo.
- 1:49:39Sprinters, 69 corollas, Rs. Threes, Rs.
- 1:49:41Twos. RS7 first gens.
- 1:49:44I'll see those cars with rotaries in them and I would
- 1:49:47hear this noise and I'd be like, Danny, what the hell is that
- 1:49:49noise? They would run open header at
- 1:49:52night bro. You know how loud a Rotary is.
- 1:49:54Imagine you know what it is to have open header or like a
- 1:49:57Flowmaster right there on the side.
- 1:49:58That's crazy. In the middle of the night down
- 1:50:00at Hunts Point bro, you can hear that sound.
- 1:50:01That sound that shit in Ramsey? No.
- 1:50:03You can hear it in Sounder. You can hear the dragon.
- 1:50:05I notice rotaries. The sound travel they're
- 1:50:08extremely. Loud so you could hear it on the
- 1:50:11cross Bronx and you were down in Hunts Point down at the bottom
- 1:50:14over there. So then so then you would.
- 1:50:16So I started hearing I was like Danny, what is that he be like,
- 1:50:19yo, they're putting those monster motors in those cars and
- 1:50:22Toyota Starlet. That's why you see other Puerto
- 1:50:23Ricans with the Toyota Starlets. And you guys in your head are
- 1:50:26like why did we go to the drag races and you see these Puerto
- 1:50:28Ricans with these little Starlet 2 door cars that kind of looks
- 1:50:31like a Golf. Yeah.
- 1:50:32Why? Why do they choose that car?
- 1:50:34Because back then you bought an econo box for a few 100 bucks
- 1:50:37and you went to the junkyard, scrap yard or and you took a
- 1:50:40Rotary engine and you poured it, it did some work, put it in
- 1:50:42there and now you instantly had two hundred horses 250 in a
- 1:50:45light car the. The popular one that is always
- 1:50:48on Craigslist. Back when I was looking at first
- 1:50:51car, I was looking for every eight or like Corolla, a 86
- 1:50:55chassis and almost every single one My my friend bought 1.
- 1:50:59With a Rotary in it, that's. A Corolla.
- 1:51:01Always a Rotary. SR5 Yeah 84 to 85, not, not, not
- 1:51:058086. You need to repent from that
- 1:51:08too. This is called the sapito or SR5
- 1:51:12Corolla. This whole AE86 old old school
- 1:51:15folks don't know what the hell that is.
- 1:51:16They're like, what the hell? You so all the new school guys
- 1:51:18like the chassis code? Yes also.
- 1:51:20Guys, they don't know what the hell that is.
- 1:51:22They say. Roll of row 86 to 87.
- 1:51:24They made SR5, Sequoia, Tundra, Tacoma, Corolla, Camry.
- 1:51:29Alphabet soup things. Well, they don't know what that
- 1:51:31is. So then so then they so nobody
- 1:51:34knew, but the Corolla that was after that was too heavy.
- 1:51:37The starlet and the Corolla were it.
- 1:51:38So I heard these cars drag racing or the old Corollas like
- 1:51:41the 70s with a Rotary popping wheelies like this and Mickey
- 1:51:45Thompson's in the back. You know 13 inch baby Supras.
- 1:51:48When Mickey Thompson's in the back popping wheelie you know
- 1:51:52they would bring him on trailers or from my town they you would
- 1:51:56have a pack of like 30 cars bro leaving from my town to hunts
- 1:51:59point and they would tow a little Corolla with a samurai
- 1:52:03Suzuki Samurai with a tow bar with a small little tow bar.
- 1:52:07Towing the Toyota Corolla all the way to the Bronx, You know,
- 1:52:09with the emergency lights going and when you got to Hunts Point
- 1:52:12and it took the pins out of the tow barn, go drag race with
- 1:52:16slicks and everything. Little Mickey Thompson slicks.
- 1:52:18And when I samurai and I'm like, there's probably a Rotary in
- 1:52:21that too. I'm 14 years old and I'm seeing
- 1:52:23this. I was like bad ass for that.
- 1:52:24That was when I fell in love with the Rotary engine and it
- 1:52:26started like, Oh my God, this is amazing.
- 1:52:29And in my town there was, it was like.
- 1:52:32It was like a it was rivalry. Piston was Rotary in my town.
- 1:52:35We had this one guy named Faye who's still around real good
- 1:52:37dude, bro. And he was like the Rotary king
- 1:52:39and had another guy named Henson and he was the .8 king.
- 1:52:42He had a Corolla 3T, C nitrous, Weber nitrous, you know, 1.8,
- 1:52:47Corolla like a 1980 box. You guys call it TE 70.
- 1:52:51Two, yeah, yeah. Yeah, and this car was running
- 1:52:53like 11 O Nitrous and this guy other car was running like I
- 1:52:58think 1090 Nitrous or something. But anyway, so that was a
- 1:53:00rivalry. And then you know we'd go with
- 1:53:03this pack of people always at Hunts Point, drag racing and
- 1:53:05stuff like that. So that was like my berth.
- 1:53:08So as you can see all the cars and all the clientele base
- 1:53:11today, it's still, that's still the foundation, that's still
- 1:53:17where I came from. So those type of customers are,
- 1:53:19some of them are still my customers, Yeah, you know and
- 1:53:22now I was watching and now I make parts.
- 1:53:25Yeah, it's crazy because sometimes I see him come in and
- 1:53:26they're like in the late 50s or early 60s and like, Gooby,
- 1:53:30what's up and how you doing? Oh, my God.
- 1:53:32I remember you were a little kid, used to come hang out with
- 1:53:34us and stuff like that. I'm gonna call your Mama past
- 1:53:37your bedtime. That's such a cool.
- 1:53:41Story my older brother, my older brother would take us, you know,
- 1:53:43But when you're young, you're all there drinking 40s and stuff
- 1:53:46like that. So that's the only downside that
- 1:53:48I remember is like we'd go, my brother would take me and
- 1:53:51another buddy of mine in the back seat and then.
- 1:53:54You know when your kids, the minute you left home you had a
- 1:53:56beer. So then we go get a OE or a
- 1:53:58Crazy Horse and hanging out drinking you know with the
- 1:54:01hoodie on and the and and and stuff like that cuz you know you
- 1:54:05want to drink when you're hanging out with your buddies.
- 1:54:06But now that looking at it in hindsight, I wish I wasn't, I
- 1:54:09wasn't weren't drinking because then I would have remembered
- 1:54:11more or had better experiences, you know, so there again.
- 1:54:15So that I love that story, though, no.
- 1:54:16No, no. So that's that was the
- 1:54:17inception. So that's what made me look at
- 1:54:19the Rotary and most guys that most Puerto Rican guys are drag
- 1:54:22races but. Like Rotary engine from this
- 1:54:25area or either racing there. Bunker Hill Patterson or
- 1:54:30Fountain Ave. in Brooklyn and Queen Brooklyn, they were racing
- 1:54:34either Fountain Ave. or Bunker Hill Hunts Point.
- 1:54:39In Hunts Point you had a few places, they had the Cocacola
- 1:54:41you had down over there is a Riga Ave.
- 1:54:43We used to race on the Riga all the time and I wasn't racing, I
- 1:54:47was a kid, but I would go with somebody always to watch the
- 1:54:49races. It was awesome, but I was like.
- 1:54:51It was like NHL ray bro, like this on the side.
- 1:54:53This is like before. Like this is like around before
- 1:54:56Giuliani. This is around thinkings.
- 1:54:57Yeah. And then Giuliani came in and
- 1:54:59cleaned up all in New York. Even when I worked at Nissan, my
- 1:55:02parts manager would be talking about that stuff like Bunker
- 1:55:05Hill. It was in all the same thing,
- 1:55:07bro. Street racing today to that it
- 1:55:09was two different worlds, Yeah, so it was really rough.
- 1:55:12So. Damn man, Well.
- 1:55:14Thank you for telling us that story, because that's my
- 1:55:16favorite part. But the idea was, so I came from
- 1:55:18the Drag Race world, right? And I'm still in it, yeah.
- 1:55:21And the horsepower and the parts that I've made have been from
- 1:55:25that understanding. But at the same time, there was
- 1:55:27Rd. racing in the 80s and 90s, But that was more like a Thai
- 1:55:31guy. It was more of an expensive
- 1:55:34sport, right? Yeah.
- 1:55:36So today. Today now you have rotaries in
- 1:55:40drifting like. I was gonna say, do you see like
- 1:55:43a I was about to. Talk.
- 1:55:44Yes, yes. I did a show this weekend.
- 1:55:46I was at a car. I did a car meeting in
- 1:55:47Connecticut this weekend and I got guys who have a lot of
- 1:55:49street cars. So, you know, Street car,
- 1:55:52Corolla RS3RS2RS7, Nice, nice cars, you know, everything
- 1:55:55polished nice. They like Rotary, but they don't
- 1:55:58like drag racing. They just want a nice Street car
- 1:56:00to go chill with the wife on the weekend.
- 1:56:02Stuff like that. Yeah, but they're not into drag
- 1:56:04racing or they don't know. What drifting is or anything of
- 1:56:07that stuff, right. So now as you can see, I do
- 1:56:10Rotary engines because that's the common denominator that all
- 1:56:13these people have. I don't focus on just RX sevens,
- 1:56:16I do Rotary cuz rotor's being used in all these different
- 1:56:19applications. That's pretty interesting.
- 1:56:21Rotary, right. In your case, you're only doing
- 1:56:23suspension and stuff for Rd. Cars are drifting.
- 1:56:26Yeah, nothing drag racing. You get what?
- 1:56:27I'm saying yeah, yeah, not. What about much?
- 1:56:29What about, like, a wave runner? That has a that has a Rotary in
- 1:56:33it. I've seen rotaries in wave.
- 1:56:35Runners, I shoot you not Frankie.
- 1:56:36Don't look at me like that. There's a Rotary in in one of
- 1:56:39those little, you know, those little trucks they bring to
- 1:56:42Japan right now. Yeah, yeah, K Truck.
- 1:56:45There's a Rotary in a golf cart. I heard there's a Rotary in
- 1:56:47Puerto Rico in a in a coffin. Wait, excuse me.
- 1:56:51A coffin in Puerto Rico. There's an engine in a coffin.
- 1:56:53A Rotary, I think a Rotary in a coffin.
- 1:56:55Like they buried it. No, like they drive it around.
- 1:56:57It's a freaking coffin, bro. Like that photo right there.
- 1:57:01Yeah, like a coffin, Yeah. There's a Rotary in that there's
- 1:57:04a. Rotary and there was a Rotary in
- 1:57:06the I remember there was a Rotary engine on a four Wheeler
- 1:57:09in the Bronx like 30 years ago. Doing wheelies.
- 1:57:13It was Derek on the bicycle. Yep, doing wheelies.
- 1:57:15Dude, that is. Yeah, so they put rotaries and
- 1:57:18everything and the Mustang, and I've seen rotaries and the
- 1:57:20Mustang. I want to see this.
- 1:57:22My friend has a three rotor right now in Long Island.
- 1:57:24He has a three rotor. He's putting it in a Fox body.
- 1:57:26He's fine. That's fucking fantastic.
- 1:57:29Yeah. That's the 5.0 guys are gonna
- 1:57:31be. That's what I would want to do.
- 1:57:33I'd want to just see the face of somebody.
- 1:57:36You're gonna roll up to one of the meets with the VA guys.
- 1:57:40And that one deal with the New Balance is gonna be pissed.
- 1:57:42It's gonna be like. He's gonna hear that rap.
- 1:57:45Like, what kind of Cam you got in this?
- 1:57:47Yeah, so they're gonna be obsessed.
- 1:57:49So then again, so the Rotary engine, like I told you guys, is
- 1:57:51in multiple different. It's everywhere.
- 1:57:53Sports. Yeah.
- 1:57:54Rd. I've seen a Rotary lawn mower
- 1:57:56once that exists, A Rotary lawn. Mower.
- 1:57:59Yeah, sash made Rotary lawn mower.
- 1:58:01They made a Rotary dirt bike. They made a Rotary motorcycle.
- 1:58:05Suzuki RE5 I'm gonna look. For that I think you need to.
- 1:58:08Get that motorcycle, huh? You need to get that motorcycle,
- 1:58:11Yeah. I think it would just complete
- 1:58:12your life now. Yeah, they were gonna put the
- 1:58:14Rotary engine in. GM had the patents to the Rotary
- 1:58:17engine, and they were this close to putting it in the Vega.
- 1:58:20Remember the Vega? No.
- 1:58:22I do. I know the Vega.
- 1:58:23He knows the. And then at the last minute they
- 1:58:25changed the motor from the Rotary engine in the Vega and
- 1:58:28they put that Isuzu motor in The Vega had like a 2.42 point 2
- 1:58:33Isuzu motor that came in the Suzuki pump.
- 1:58:35They put that in the Vega instead of the Rotary engine.
- 1:58:37But I met engineers throughout my walk.
- 1:58:40I met, I had met a few years ago, like 15 years ago.
- 1:58:42I met engineers that had to work at the GM plant where they were
- 1:58:46testing the Rotary engine and I don't know if it Illinois or
- 1:58:49whatever. Why didn't they do it?
- 1:58:50I don't know. They said something with the
- 1:58:52emissions. Yeah, I had emissions.
- 1:58:54Remember they had the fuel crisis in the 70s.
- 1:58:57So then I think they went and they decided to put the Isuzu
- 1:59:00motor in there at the last minute.
- 1:59:02And put the Rotary engine is big, it's vast.
- 1:59:04You know the Rotary engine was made here in Jersey at one time.
- 1:59:07Curtis Wright had licenses to the to the Rotary engine here in
- 1:59:11New Jersey and they used to work out of Woodridge and they had a
- 1:59:14little plant there and they worked on the Rotary engine
- 1:59:16there at one time. Woodridge or Woodridge.
- 1:59:19Because Woodridge is right. Woodridge the street.
- 1:59:21Not Woodbridge. Not.
- 1:59:22Not. Not.
- 1:59:23Not Ridgewood. Woodridge.
- 1:59:25There's a Woodridge right near us.
- 1:59:26Well, maybe it's. I don't know if that's the same
- 1:59:28one. Maybe, but they did work.
- 1:59:29Here, Curtis. Wright look at Curtis Wright New
- 1:59:31Jersey and Google. Curtis Wright New Jersey in
- 1:59:331960s, they did a lot of R&D there.
- 1:59:37A lot of core and D that Mazda. Eventually I've seen the same
- 1:59:41work that they did there at other engines and I was like,
- 1:59:43oh, OK, so and sometimes when people say, hey, who designed
- 1:59:46this, who came up with this? Well, I think the Curtis Wright
- 1:59:49guys had it first or that's right in America.
- 1:59:53Let me see. And then I don't know if you
- 1:59:54guys remember Rotary Power International?
- 1:59:57What is that? That was a publicly traded
- 1:59:59company in IPO that actually did Rotary research here in New
- 2:00:02Jersey as well. What the fuck?
- 2:00:04So they're just doing research to.
- 2:00:05See what they can use. These engines for.
- 2:00:07In the late 90s there was a company called Rotary Power
- 2:00:10International and they worked on what's called a stratified
- 2:00:12Rotary engine, a diesel one as well.
- 2:00:15And they were working on it for mass production, right?
- 2:00:17It was an IPO. You guys know what IPO is,
- 2:00:19right? Yeah.
- 2:00:20So there was one here in New Jersey.
- 2:00:21It got all this money, but it disappeared overnight and no one
- 2:00:24knows what. Happened.
- 2:00:25I see the Curtis Wright Rotary thing.
- 2:00:27Yeah, see, I'm telling. You damn it.
- 2:00:28IPO for a Rotary company is kind of wild to think about.
- 2:00:32I. Think what happened is in the
- 2:00:3390s that happened and then they took some monies and they did
- 2:00:36that. Nothing came about that and I
- 2:00:38think it went belly up. I'm not sure.
- 2:00:40It disappeared. But I think that's why maybe one
- 2:00:43of the reasons why the Rotary engine today or anybody doing
- 2:00:45Wenkle work or anybody licensing the patent from NSU, they're
- 2:00:49going to have a tough time creating, bringing, getting
- 2:00:53venture because the Rotary engine has a sort of like a
- 2:00:56stain. A stain on it, that's.
- 2:00:58Trading. You want me to give you twenty
- 2:01:00$30 million for this? What's the outcome, You know and
- 2:01:03so? That's the challenging part
- 2:01:05there. We got a good question here.
- 2:01:06I wanna I wanna start. With this, somebody has a
- 2:01:08question. Yeah, Mike, we.
- 2:01:09Got a few? Friend?
- 2:01:09Nico asked. What do you think of Rob Dom's
- 2:01:12bill? Do you know Rob Dom is he's a.
- 2:01:14YouTube guy with which build in particular.
- 2:01:16I think I'm assuming he's talking about the four Rd. the
- 2:01:18four Rd. Rotor is cool, bro.
- 2:01:19That's badass, man. I like it.
- 2:01:21All-wheel drive. I met that dude by accident once
- 2:01:23in Michigan somehow. Yeah, it was so random.
- 2:01:26He is from Michigan initially. Yeah.
- 2:01:28He's from there, yeah. Yeah, that's where I met him.
- 2:01:30And before all the Rotary stuff. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:01:32He was on one of those shows with the with their dating
- 2:01:35women. What was the name of that?
- 2:01:36Show oh. Yeah.
- 2:01:37Matchmaker. Whatever.
- 2:01:38I think no. Yeah.
- 2:01:40Wait, really? I think he was.
- 2:01:41I think he was, I hope. He's funny.
- 2:01:43Did I like wrong Dom? Yeah, yeah, he's.
- 2:01:45I love his videos. Yeah, his videos are.
- 2:01:47I need to. Talk to him.
- 2:01:48He needs to help me out with my boss because I got a little boss
- 2:01:50spot on him. You think he could help you out?
- 2:01:53Yeah, because he got that hair product.
- 2:01:55Bro, you gotta hook a brother up.
- 2:01:56OK, I'll. Trade him.
- 2:01:58Got the sound for it. Rob Goopy needs your help.
- 2:02:00Yeah, so then I got the ball spot.
- 2:02:01So then yeah, his car is cool. That is real cool.
- 2:02:04I like his car. And then he has, he has that 12
- 2:02:08rotor he's working on. Yeah, that 12 rotor he's working
- 2:02:11on, which I think that was worked on, that was initially
- 2:02:13designed and made by some guy, some other fella that does boats
- 2:02:17or something like that. That's a.
- 2:02:19Badass. How long is that?
- 2:02:20Yeah, Ricardo just said. It was The Bachelor.
- 2:02:23What the fuck? The Bachelor, right?
- 2:02:24Yeah, I told. You that's funny as.
- 2:02:26Fuck, that's hilarious. That's cool.
- 2:02:28So how long is a 12 rotor? I think they designed it where
- 2:02:32they had 4-4 and four something. Like that.
- 2:02:36So what a dope fuck. That makes more sense, yeah.
- 2:02:40That sounds let. Me tell you something, even if
- 2:02:41that thing never takes off. It's safe and never takes off.
- 2:02:44It's still cool regardless. Yeah, it's still cool.
- 2:02:46And it's still cool that people are pushing the envelope because
- 2:02:49the Big 5, the Big 5, Mazda and the rest of the world, the car
- 2:02:55manufacturers, they're looking at big gains and all their R&D
- 2:02:59projects, everything they do, big gains.
- 2:03:01Toyota, you know, Daimler Benz, whomever, anything they make,
- 2:03:05they're looking to sell a million cars minimum, you know,
- 2:03:085,000,000 or this. So the Rotary engine is just not
- 2:03:11something that is marketable anymore, I don't think.
- 2:03:14Yeah. So they're using it now as a
- 2:03:15power generator now in that SUV for Mazda.
- 2:03:18They're using it as a really, but they're not using it as a
- 2:03:20power plant anymore. So when you get guys, whether it
- 2:03:23be me or whomever in these small firms that are continuing to
- 2:03:26push development on the Rotary engine, I think those people
- 2:03:29should be praised, those people should be supported and people
- 2:03:31should do whatever you can to. To.
- 2:03:34Support it. You know, to support the brand
- 2:03:36it to support the idea. Because if those people are
- 2:03:38gone, then it's. It's gonna die.
- 2:03:40And usually those people are doing it with peanuts, little
- 2:03:43money, their own machine. It's a labor of love.
- 2:03:45I was gonna say take loss. Passion projects.
- 2:03:47You know, so when people go online and said, oh hey, that's
- 2:03:50a piece of shit, this and that, and they blast you online,
- 2:03:52you're broker. Then you go get a CNC machine,
- 2:03:54you go spend $100,000 in material research and try to
- 2:03:58develop something so that the rest of the people can make.
- 2:04:00Can do it on Facebook. Just fucking.
- 2:04:03I remember I remember seeing something that Mazda was going
- 2:04:06to keep. They were going to make another
- 2:04:07RX. Is that a?
- 2:04:08Is that a real thing? You know what?
- 2:04:09I tell you something? Mazda owns, owns a lot of.
- 2:04:13They have a lot of investments in the road region, big cast
- 2:04:16machines. Yeah, they have a whole factory.
- 2:04:17Where they just. Work on that just going to throw
- 2:04:19that out just like that it would be very maybe transition into
- 2:04:22something else but just throwing that out I don't that's that's a
- 2:04:25that's. Pretty.
- 2:04:26I remember reading an article about this.
- 2:04:29I think it's in Hiroshima. Yeah, somewhere out there.
- 2:04:32Hiroshima. Yeah, they have some kind of
- 2:04:33factory and there's it's like a skeleton crew.
- 2:04:35There's only like 5, five to 10 people that work in.
- 2:04:38There I like to go, but I don't know about the Canada airplane
- 2:04:41that long. Yeah, it's a long flight.
- 2:04:44The flight to the Philippines is like.
- 2:04:46The Philippines? Who?
- 2:04:48Norway is in the Philippines, bro?
- 2:04:49Huh. Norway is in the Philippines.
- 2:04:51What's that, Noriega, bro. We're in the Philippines.
- 2:04:54You guys don't know? Hip hop on the old school.
- 2:04:57From who? Jacks.
- 2:04:58I mean Nori put up Nori on there on YouTube in the Philippines.
- 2:05:02I think Carl will probably be into it.
- 2:05:03I. Thought I like old school hippa,
- 2:05:05that's. My Yeah.
- 2:05:05So then So what happens is they're not gonna.
- 2:05:08I think Monster still owns the rotor, the RX7 engine, right?
- 2:05:13Yeah, one of the RX Eights. That design is arguably one of
- 2:05:16the most refined Rotary engines. Yeah, on Earth for many of the
- 2:05:21companies that have licensed the Rotary engine from NSU, I think
- 2:05:24that's how it works because I think a lot of companies
- 2:05:25licensed the. Rotary engine patents, so GM for
- 2:05:30so they were able to make it and I think Mazda is the only one
- 2:05:32that stuck with it inside. Let's just continue to because I
- 2:05:35think they did have some emissions issues in the 70s and
- 2:05:38stuff like that with they got bad reviews.
- 2:05:40So don't. So then today Mazda was one the
- 2:05:43one that continued to like no, let's make this better, let's
- 2:05:45refine this, let's get more efficiency and stuff.
- 2:05:47So you got to praise them for that.
- 2:05:49If you have that many years in R&D, I don't think you're just
- 2:05:51gonna throw it. Out.
- 2:05:53Yeah, I think so too. That'd be sick.
- 2:05:55Like a modernized fucking. But look what look what Japan
- 2:05:58does. Japan has like Japan has like
- 2:06:01let's say the the the Mazda motors, right?
- 2:06:04The Mazda piston motors from the 80s and 70s, the BP from the
- 2:06:08Miata, right. That BP motor was amazing.
- 2:06:11First started in the old proteges, 32 threes and then
- 2:06:14evolved, right? And then it went into the 90s
- 2:06:17proteges turn into a really nice motor by that.
- 2:06:20And then it was also in the Miata and stuff like that.
- 2:06:22And then they went to a completely different design.
- 2:06:24I think it was the 2.0 motor. It's no longer a BP motor,
- 2:06:26right? Ford Escort got involved and
- 2:06:28stuff like that. Ford got involved cuz Ford owns
- 2:06:31Mazda right? Yeah, I'm not sure when it
- 2:06:32ended. But then the old motor, the BP
- 2:06:34motor, it was a great design, it's just older.
- 2:06:37Whereas those motors, now it went to Kia.
- 2:06:40Oh really? So Kia being a Korean company,
- 2:06:42Right, Korean. Korean, I think.
- 2:06:43I think. Korean company now Korea has
- 2:06:46that same motor and they put it in a sport agent.
- 2:06:48They put it in cars that they they I.
- 2:06:50Don't even know that. I didn't know that either.
- 2:06:52So you're like, what the hell happened?
- 2:06:53So me and mine, I mean, I don't know this, I'm assuming.
- 2:06:56I'm assuming that they Kia went to Mazda, a tier one company,
- 2:06:59and said let's buy all your old tooling design drawings.
- 2:07:02Why not? You're not going to use it
- 2:07:03anymore. You guys evolved to newer motors
- 2:07:05if more efficient motors. OK, well, so let's you.
- 2:07:08Here you go. Your old tooling, your old.
- 2:07:10All the dyes, everything from the old motors, you said go
- 2:07:12right ahead, take a few $1,000,000 and they said, hey,
- 2:07:15you know what, we're not a tier one company, we're a Tier 3
- 2:07:18company. But we're going to all these
- 2:07:19other countries that have no emissions laws, don't care about
- 2:07:22that much power. We could put it in all these
- 2:07:23cars and sell it in China, South America and all those places and
- 2:07:26put it in new cars. I think that's where we
- 2:07:28redesign. You see the motor and it's like,
- 2:07:30wait, hold on, that's an old Mazda motor.
- 2:07:31Yeah, yeah. They go to Central and South
- 2:07:33America, they get a lot of cool stuff that we don't get here in
- 2:07:36the States. Well, I hope Mazda keeps at it
- 2:07:38because I don't want the Rotary to die.
- 2:07:39It won't. It won't die.
- 2:07:41So you want to read a question, You pick one of these.
- 2:07:44I like crazy ones in. Here I know I like this one.
- 2:07:46Which one? Because this one doesn't have to
- 2:07:48do as much with an engine but more.
- 2:07:51Pay for the question. No this.
- 2:07:53Is the last last last free one, last podcast for free next
- 2:07:57podcast on mine. You guys have to pay me to ask a
- 2:08:00question. What's one car from your past
- 2:08:03that you wish you could have back?
- 2:08:05Oh. Ooh yeah, you.
- 2:08:08Seemed like you knew the. Answer.
- 2:08:09I was gonna say like, I feel like I don't know if he's a guy
- 2:08:11who gets rid of cars, though, because that red one, you said
- 2:08:14you had it for a while now. He's thinking.
- 2:08:17Like I feel like you would put work into something before.
- 2:08:19You know, I kind of. I stopped like like.
- 2:08:23I'm over that now. You're like over, like years ago
- 2:08:26I was like, I'll never sell this car.
- 2:08:27I'm over now. Now you're like.
- 2:08:28Cash is king. Yeah, Cash is king.
- 2:08:30Yeah. You want to buy something?
- 2:08:31I have so anything except my booty hole.
- 2:08:35So everything's got a price. Anything out of price except me.
- 2:08:38I don't sell myself, but. There's got to be something.
- 2:08:41Yeah, but no, there's. I could have bought a I I missed
- 2:08:46this close to buying a 69 Corolla wagon that my friend had
- 2:08:49years ago I could have bought. Interesting.
- 2:08:51I missed out on it so. It's not even a Mazda.
- 2:08:53No, it wasn't that. What else?
- 2:08:55No, cuz a lot of stuff that I wanted back in the day.
- 2:08:57I went and bought it again. But but what's?
- 2:09:00Is there any, Is there any car you had and you wish you could
- 2:09:03have it back? No, no.
- 2:09:05I feel like for me, I always try to think and I'm like, I would
- 2:09:09love that car back, but really the only thing that I want back.
- 2:09:12That I'm missing from that is probably some of the memories
- 2:09:15that I had with it or something. Which you're not going to get.
- 2:09:17Experiences. You're not going to get that
- 2:09:18bag. You're going to get back in that
- 2:09:19car and you're going to be like, why did I want this bag?
- 2:09:21Yeah, Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:09:22Once you're done with something that says so like a
- 2:09:24ex-girlfriend. Bye.
- 2:09:25See. That makes sense, though.
- 2:09:29Do you know Judge Ito? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:09:31He's a good dude. He's been, he's been doing Rory
- 2:09:33for a long time. So I don't know who that is.
- 2:09:35Can you explain that to me? He was here from Jersey, Even
- 2:09:37Patterson. OK.
- 2:09:39Doing a lot of Rotary for a lot of years.
- 2:09:40He had a lot of records and stuff like that.
- 2:09:42Really. OK, cool.
- 2:09:43Why the hell did Wags ask? That wags is a Wankel fanboy.
- 2:09:46But. Really what?
- 2:09:48Happens though this is what happens though what I keep
- 2:09:50telling you. It.
- 2:09:51The Rotary world was vast. There was a lot of Rotary guys
- 2:09:54here in the East Coast, in New York, East Coast, New Jersey.
- 2:09:57And there was a lot of guys. They were, they were and they
- 2:09:59were good. They were good at what they're
- 2:10:00doing. And I think what has happened is
- 2:10:03there was a lot of, there was a big performance shop right here,
- 2:10:06and we're 46 at one time. My my friend Mark Marquitos, I
- 2:10:10think he had a shop right here in this next town over.
- 2:10:12He was the first guy to take an RX8 and put A20B in it.
- 2:10:16I mean, the car was like brand new.
- 2:10:17He drove it out. The dealer, bro.
- 2:10:19Like. Like. 2020 B Auto dealer took
- 2:10:23the motor and put a 20 because we seen them at the show like
- 2:10:26that October at Echo and I was like, no way you got a 20 being
- 2:10:30here, bro. These things just came out like
- 2:10:31yesterday. He already had a 20B, was
- 2:10:33running and everything, bro. I was like, no way, bro.
- 2:10:36So it was crazy. And I think that car was in one
- 2:10:38of the magazines like Sport Compact or something like that.
- 2:10:41Yeah. So it was like a Turbo magazine
- 2:10:42or one of them. So there was a lot of, there was
- 2:10:44a lot of skill sets, a lot of car guys.
- 2:10:46Like there's a proverb right in the book of proverbs.
- 2:10:49Solomon wrote whatever has been, has been, whatever will be, will
- 2:10:53be. There's nothing new under the
- 2:10:54sun and sun under the stars. What he was trying to say is
- 2:10:57that it was talking about what he has seen in the, what he has
- 2:11:02seen in the past with Israel, things that has been, they'll
- 2:11:04be, you know, it'll happen again.
- 2:11:06It's just it's a cycle, right? It's a cycle.
- 2:11:08So he was saying how the nation would go into idol worship.
- 2:11:13And they would say, oh, all these bad things are happening.
- 2:11:16This is new. And he would be like, no, I've
- 2:11:18seen it before. It's happened before.
- 2:11:19Yeah, from that perspective, right.
- 2:11:21But I say I use that same perspective also in the car
- 2:11:23world, because in the car world I get a lot of guys come and
- 2:11:26say, oh, I'm doing something new and I always clown my customer
- 2:11:28and you know, some of my, like my buddies.
- 2:11:30And it's always like I'm always, I'm always clowning them.
- 2:11:33But they it's always fun. I'm not trying to disrespect
- 2:11:35nobody. They gotta know.
- 2:11:37It's always just. Humor.
- 2:11:38So I always tell them, bro, there's nothing new.
- 2:11:40You're not gonna teach me anything new.
- 2:11:41Little subtle little things, maybe.
- 2:11:43But what has been has been. And what will be will be.
- 2:11:46Look, let me tell you something. If there's something somebody
- 2:11:48wanted to do with the Rotary engine, they already did it.
- 2:11:51Okay. You're not gonna do something
- 2:11:53that, bro. Oh, my God.
- 2:11:54This is breakthrough. No, you didn't.
- 2:11:56Somebody already did it. Somebody did it.
- 2:11:58Sometimes people just. Forgot, and they probably
- 2:12:00didn't. Publish it.
- 2:12:01Of course. Somebody did it.
- 2:12:02This somebody did it. Oh, I want to make 200.
- 2:12:04Nobody's ever made 200 horsepower.
- 2:12:06Somebody did it. You don't.
- 2:12:07Think there's a Newport job? Wait.
- 2:12:09No, maybe. But it's subtle changes here and
- 2:12:12there. Little little tidbit
- 2:12:14differences. But as far as big, you know,
- 2:12:17yeah, there there, there isn't that much.
- 2:12:19I've seen so much. It's just like it's it, it's
- 2:12:23look, let me tell you something. There's a car, there's a in the
- 2:12:2690s. I remember going to Hunts Point
- 2:12:28once and I went there and I see in a 1979 miles RX7 like the one
- 2:12:33I have out there, right, with a 1991 Nissan 350 three 300Z,
- 2:12:40that's 199192. The 300 Twin Turbo, what's that
- 2:12:43one called? 300Z.
- 2:12:44X Yeah, but what's the abbreviation for that?
- 2:12:47It had a Z32 front nose molded into the RX7 first Gen. body.
- 2:12:54With the twin turbo motor inning driving on the street, you know
- 2:12:58what it is to look and see a twin turbo.
- 2:13:00And remember, the twin turbos are brand new there.
- 2:13:01Right. That shit is big as hell and.
- 2:13:03They're like you see the nose and then he goes by and then
- 2:13:06it's an RX7 and the back was a wide body RX7.
- 2:13:08The owner of it, if I'm not mistaken, was Turbo Tito.
- 2:13:11Turbo Tito was the guy who used to raise Porsches.
- 2:13:14And you can look, go on YouTube and type in Turbo Tito.
- 2:13:16He used to be the Porsche King, He used to go to Pan Ams and all
- 2:13:19the events here in English Town, Summer Slam and English, all the
- 2:13:23Drag Race events and he's the pop wheelies in third gear.
- 2:13:25New in? That type in Turbotito on
- 2:13:27YouTube and you see him doing popping wheelies in 3rd gear 20
- 2:13:30years ago and he had the RX7 in the early 90s and I was like,
- 2:13:34this is incredible And that blew my mind And that made me realize
- 2:13:38that dude, what people have done in the past, they everything you
- 2:13:41could think of. Somebody already did it.
- 2:13:44Fine. Can you fine tune it?
- 2:13:45Make a little. Bit more trouble.
- 2:13:46Here, adjust this. I'm gonna try something new and
- 2:13:49they make this new. Fine, that wasn't available
- 2:13:51then. Fine, no big deal.
- 2:13:52That's something someone made. But you know, as far as the big
- 2:13:56gains, people have already done it and even better.
- 2:13:59That's fair enough. I mean, and we already talked
- 2:14:01about how some of the knowledge is lost here and there.
- 2:14:03So I'm sad about that, man. Like I wish I could.
- 2:14:07Get some of that back, you know, I feel like we're trying.
- 2:14:09So for example, I had, I have a K24 motor, I bought 2K24 motors
- 2:14:13and I wanted to put one in a small truck that I have, right?
- 2:14:18And instead of you know, now I was asking, I met a few Honda
- 2:14:21guys that do Hondas at the Dino, a few the Honda guys and I kept
- 2:14:24asking them a few questions. I asked them this question, hey,
- 2:14:27what's the ring diameter, how many teeth and rig diameter on
- 2:14:30AK-24 flywheel? From like a Honda Accord 2010.
- 2:14:35Nobody was able to tell me the weight, the ring diameter,
- 2:14:38nothing mechanical. They were not able to tell me
- 2:14:41anything. And I wanted to know so that I
- 2:14:43know because I want to modify some bell housings and adapters
- 2:14:45from using Mazda Trending so I could put it in this truck I
- 2:14:48have right now. I was asking, hey, give me the
- 2:14:50ring diameter so I know what starter to use when gauge.
- 2:14:52If I have to use a bigger, you know, yeah, if I if I put a
- 2:14:55Mazda, I could probably put just a bigger gear, right.
- 2:14:58So it engages and stuff. No one was able to tell me
- 2:15:00anything. Oh my God.
- 2:15:02And then I went and I asked them, OK, so can I put the motor
- 2:15:04straight? And nobody was able to answer
- 2:15:07that, you know, how the motors tilted.
- 2:15:08And then I asked if he be, OK, So what should I do on this K20
- 2:15:11four? And everybody in the mother told
- 2:15:13me, regurgitated everything that they have read on a forum.
- 2:15:16Yeah, I could tell, oh, you got to change the oil pump or you
- 2:15:19got to do this. You got to do that.
- 2:15:20Well, is that what you did? And you noticed that the factory
- 2:15:231 doesn't work or no, no or. None of them, did you?
- 2:15:25Just read online. Oh, you know, and I was like,
- 2:15:28OK, so I guess you guys are just knowledgeable because you're
- 2:15:30sharing information, which is good.
- 2:15:32We didn't have that back in the day in the Rotary world.
- 2:15:34Just, you guys know, the Rotary world in the top Rotary world,
- 2:15:36they don't share information. They don't talk to each other.
- 2:15:38It's real competitive. Yeah.
- 2:15:40It's like, yo, no. It's Drag Race you.
- 2:15:42Go to certain drag race events and people cover their motors
- 2:15:44and cover their turbos and yeah. The.
- 2:15:47Laptops are locked and stuff like.
- 2:15:48That, but you know what that's going to do, that's going to,
- 2:15:50that's going to push that other person.
- 2:15:53Right. Like, you know what?
- 2:15:53I mean that's. Good.
- 2:15:54Watch this. Competitions.
- 2:15:55So then you know that goes to that some knowledge base has
- 2:15:57been lost, which is the next question.
- 2:16:00Best chassis for a Rotary. Best chassis.
- 2:16:03To put it in. That's what the question is.
- 2:16:04Interesting. Best.
- 2:16:06Chance, I mean, we heard about a lot.
- 2:16:07Of I like the starlets, Man, I love a good starlets.
- 2:16:10Mazda to put it. In I guess whatever, yes, if it
- 2:16:13is a Mazda if it's not. I don't know, man.
- 2:16:15Not not Mazda. Just for the shit of it.
- 2:16:17Dude, you. On my show on Sunday, there was
- 2:16:19a Subaru there with a road rang in and it broke.
- 2:16:21My God. You know the Subaru?
- 2:16:23Was like, is it an older Subaru? No, like a 2000 something 5-6
- 2:16:27Subaru with a pickup truck. Like a Baha is that one.
- 2:16:29A a Baha. Yeah, 4 door pickup truck with
- 2:16:32the with the bed. No, that's a Baja.
- 2:16:34Yeah, OK. So what's a?
- 2:16:3712A carburetor No, it was really dry, OK.
- 2:16:40Wait, it's 12A, so it's not a 13.
- 2:16:42B from Pennsylvania white one. It was beautiful.
- 2:16:44It should be on my picture. So listen, I think at the end of
- 2:16:47the day, whatever chance you want to use, that's gonna work
- 2:16:50just fine. I think people will just put a
- 2:16:51Rotary in anything if they have one just sitting, and why not
- 2:16:55just put a fucking Rotary in there?
- 2:16:56Which is the next question people had.
- 2:16:58What do you think of Mazda's new Rotary plans?
- 2:17:01We kind of talked about this, but I don't think we really.
- 2:17:03Know they're putting that one. They're putting the the.
- 2:17:06You mentioned as a power. Plant, right.
- 2:17:07They're using A1 rotor engine and a power plant for electric
- 2:17:11power. Right.
- 2:17:12I didn't. Even use it, an SUV.
- 2:17:14I don't know what it's called. Maybe he could look at it and
- 2:17:15use it. But I'm actually waiting for
- 2:17:17that engine to come out because the minute it comes out, I want
- 2:17:19to get that engine in my hands and look at it and see what I
- 2:17:21could learn from it. Yeah, and I heard the rotor is
- 2:17:25600CC's. Or 800 cc's I think.
- 2:17:29So that would be if two of those would be equivalent to a 1.6
- 2:17:34liter 13B, which would 2 rotor, which would be bigger than A13B.
- 2:17:38Yeah, so I'm thinking in my head man, maybe I'm already thinking
- 2:17:41in my head. That's, yeah, I mean that sounds
- 2:17:43pretty. Interesting First few junk
- 2:17:44yards. My brother works for insurance
- 2:17:45companies. I'm going to be like, yo wait,
- 2:17:48first wreck, you see, I want. The I still don't understand
- 2:17:51though because you you have that you're saying that that and that
- 2:17:54little engine is. Somewhere on an SUV.
- 2:17:58Yeah, it's gonna like power the power, the electron like, right?
- 2:18:01Like a hybrid, in a way, huh. I guess a hybrid of.
- 2:18:04Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:18:04Like a hybrid. Yeah.
- 2:18:05Yeah. That's so different.
- 2:18:06What the hell? I think Audi was gonna do the
- 2:18:08same thing at one time too, and I don't know what happened.
- 2:18:11HM Lewis asked this one what is the best advice you can give to
- 2:18:14a young car enthusiast? Oh God.
- 2:18:16This is a loaded question. Yeah, that is a loaded question.
- 2:18:19What do you mean? Stop being a bitch.
- 2:18:21I'm just kidding. I mean, we talked about a lot of
- 2:18:23that. Yeah, we did.
- 2:18:24I feel like it's. I don't know you.
- 2:18:26You come from like old school roots.
- 2:18:28Yeah. So that's the people that.
- 2:18:29I would say stay off drugs, man. Don't do drugs.
- 2:18:32Just yesterday I heard bad news. A friend of mine that I grew up
- 2:18:34with who you know is with the needle and stuff like that, and
- 2:18:39he had a stroke because the drugs did something to his liver
- 2:18:42or something and then he. Had a stroke.
- 2:18:44And then half of his body is paralyzed now, and he's
- 2:18:47homeless. This is somebody I grew up with,
- 2:18:49you know, it breaks my heart. He used to paint all the time.
- 2:18:52He's a good guy, but I remember when we were younger, he was a
- 2:18:54pothead. He's a lot of smoking weed, man.
- 2:18:56And and that's that was the gateway, you know, that's what
- 2:18:59got him. And now he's in his 40s and now
- 2:19:00he's homeless. And I think he probably live in
- 2:19:02one of the shelters in the city, but it breaks my heart when that
- 2:19:05happened because he was a painter, like you will not
- 2:19:08believe you could paint cars. Oh my God, he was an amazing
- 2:19:10painter. He was a car guy too.
- 2:19:11So it breaks my heart. So a young guy, you know, stay
- 2:19:14off drugs, don't steal, do your homework.
- 2:19:19Okay. And no, I think that.
- 2:19:21Good advice. Look for things that keep you
- 2:19:24busy. Look for things that are
- 2:19:26constructive. Try to find your purpose.
- 2:19:28If you can find your purpose young in this life, that's
- 2:19:30really the best, that's the best, whatever.
- 2:19:32And stick with this. They'd be focused to it.
- 2:19:34That's the best advice I've heard on this podcast.
- 2:19:36Yeah, so. That's good for sure.
- 2:19:39Cuz like it was like you took that a completely different
- 2:19:41route and that's I like it. And if you work, you get a job,
- 2:19:44make sure you have a good work ethic.
- 2:19:45Start something, finish it, you know, start it and finish it.
- 2:19:48That I like that, yeah. Everybody, every car guy starts
- 2:19:51a project and it's for sale on Craigslist, like six months
- 2:19:54later. Partial build, you know, for
- 2:19:56sale, you know. Yeah.
- 2:19:57And I know guys that are constantly looking at credit is
- 2:19:59looking for those, that one dummy that spent 10 grand on a
- 2:20:02car. And my friend picks that up for
- 2:20:03five grand and finishes and sells it.
- 2:20:05You know what I mean? So yeah, stay focused.
- 2:20:07And if you're focused on little things, you'll do better.
- 2:20:10And whatever it is that you do, stick with it.
- 2:20:13Just pick. If you go online and you want to
- 2:20:15learn about something, try to get different angles, but at the
- 2:20:17same time, be open to new ideas. Yeah, just follow through with
- 2:20:20your. Friends, Yeah.
- 2:20:21Follow through with Yeah, that's a big.
- 2:20:22One too. Working on that, we working on
- 2:20:25that. I like this one too.
- 2:20:27Do you want to read it? RHD?
- 2:20:28Matt asks. Do you find the popularity of
- 2:20:31rotaries increased or decreased over the last few years?
- 2:20:38That's a good question though. I feel like it's increasing.
- 2:20:41For different You've been in this for a minute now.
- 2:20:43I think it's increasing in different ways like it's.
- 2:20:46Yeah, I don't think it has not grown.
- 2:20:48I think it has grown, yeah. Because look, for some reason
- 2:20:51the Rotary engine isn't going away anytime soon, right?
- 2:20:53Has it swapped hands? Yes.
- 2:20:55So RX7 that. That some that Mikey down the
- 2:20:59street has some YouTube Mikey down the street has that car
- 2:21:02probably belonged to a middle-aged guy that you know
- 2:21:05was a baller and then in the early 90s, you know he's
- 2:21:09finishing working at the law firm, but it's FD now.
- 2:21:12He's got three kids and they're older going to college, so he's
- 2:21:15off and now goes into this guy's hand.
- 2:21:17But they're so the Rotary engine isn't going away anytime soon.
- 2:21:20It's just changing hands, Just changing hands.
- 2:21:23Right. But has it grown?
- 2:21:24Yes. Because they're not making them
- 2:21:26anymore. Yeah, they are what they are.
- 2:21:28These are so expensive. Cars are so expensive.
- 2:21:30Why? Because there's none left and
- 2:21:31there's more people coming into the game.
- 2:21:33But yet I was going to say, yeah, they don't make them, but
- 2:21:36yet people are still fucking pushing it.
- 2:21:40Now the Rotary engine you do know is global, right?
- 2:21:42Yeah, You know the Rotary engine, I have customers, Rotary
- 2:21:45engine customers in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa,
- 2:21:51Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica.
- 2:21:57Panama. Columbia, Brazil.
- 2:22:02Anderson Dick. You guys know Anderson Dick from
- 2:22:04Fuel Tech? You got parts on every
- 2:22:05continent. Every Canada, Yeah, every.
- 2:22:09So Rotary is everywhere. Rotary this Rotary customers
- 2:22:13everywhere. It may not be that many over
- 2:22:15over there, but they're everywhere.
- 2:22:16Rotary cars are everywhere. And I don't think they're going
- 2:22:18anywhere. No, they're not going anywhere.
- 2:22:20I mean, it's cool, dude. That's the coolest engine.
- 2:22:22Yes, yes. Yeah it is cool engine.
- 2:22:23It's not going any way anyway. There's the one question.
- 2:22:27Does the name Tranny King mean anything?
- 2:22:29Yeah, that's Dave. He's a tranny king from New
- 2:22:32York. He said.
- 2:22:33Who's that guy? Tranny king?
- 2:22:34I heard he's the guy to go to for trannies.
- 2:22:37What the fuck? Hey, yo.
- 2:22:40Who? Who is?
- 2:22:41Yes, Dave. That's my friend Dave.
- 2:22:42He's the best man. He's DB Black man on Instagram.
- 2:22:46Yeah. Yeah, yeah, you know what we
- 2:22:47call him? Tranny king cuz at one time he
- 2:22:49blew like 7. Tranny's bro.
- 2:22:51Wow. That's a.
- 2:22:52Bad that. Means.
- 2:22:55Yeah, yeah. Destroyed.
- 2:22:56No, that also sounds bad. He transmissions.
- 2:23:00Yeah, he destroyed transmissions like.
- 2:23:04Ten of them or something like that, like in a few months.
- 2:23:06And he would come and get need another one.
- 2:23:08I'd sell him another one and break it up, Stop breaking.
- 2:23:10Training Why is he? Why is he?
- 2:23:12Because he was running like the NA training, like the the weaker
- 2:23:14training. And I kept telling don't hit it
- 2:23:16hard and he, you know, he thinks every car in New York is racing
- 2:23:19him. Dude, that's a taxi, bro.
- 2:23:21He's. Racing.
- 2:23:22You bro. He's just trying to get
- 2:23:23somewhere, he. Ain't racing you, bro.
- 2:23:26I'd be like every every traffic light.
- 2:23:28He thought it was a race all. Right training King.
- 2:23:30Yeah. So then then Training King got
- 2:23:32the He got the name Training King, yeah.
- 2:23:34Damn. What?
- 2:23:35What is the favorite color for Rotary housing?
- 2:23:38Is that a thing I see? Like blue ones I see?
- 2:23:41Is that a thing like? No.
- 2:23:42Nowadays problems last ten years or so.
- 2:23:46Everybody, I want this. Color.
- 2:23:47I thought they were just supposed to.
- 2:23:48Be black I see this. Color and that can it be off?
- 2:23:51Why can it be? This, you know, back in the day.
- 2:23:54They were just like washing. Oh Gen.
- 2:23:55Z's. Oh my Lord.
- 2:23:56I like the ones in your on your Instagram.
- 2:23:58They're perfectly they're. Black and so it's cool.
- 2:24:01So now I guess you want to pay me.
- 2:24:02I'll do it. No big deal.
- 2:24:03But they have got. You know, everybody powder coat
- 2:24:05one this color and that color. Oh.
- 2:24:07My God. Stop already?
- 2:24:09Man, is that like the equivalent of like doing your valve cover?
- 2:24:12Yeah. Kinda.
- 2:24:14Sorta. Maybe, Yeah.
- 2:24:15Cuz you know now like in the drift scene, everybody's got
- 2:24:17some crazy looking. What did happen is though the I
- 2:24:20believe that the because of COVID English time closing down
- 2:24:24and and you know less drag racing you know you know it's
- 2:24:28just it's just it's just turned like this.
- 2:24:30I don't know it's a lot of variables but.
- 2:24:32There's more car show RX sevens and rotaries and like what they
- 2:24:37call a pachinko Rey or just to hang out, you know street cars
- 2:24:41than there is race cars. So the guys that want an RX7 or
- 2:24:44RX3RX2 or Rotary engine for like a meet or something to go to the
- 2:24:49car show, those guys are being more meticular about making the
- 2:24:52car pretty. The drag Race cars and the guys
- 2:24:54who are into motor sports? Nah, they just want to just put
- 2:24:56it together. Let's go.
- 2:24:57Yeah, they just want to go. Fast.
- 2:24:58So that's why that perhaps the. Propagated that at.
- 2:25:01The color sense, yeah. So this one says Rotary and ECU
- 2:25:06management is old gold. I think it might be a spelling
- 2:25:11error. Is old gold with options like
- 2:25:13Powerfc or newer tech like Haltech?
- 2:25:16I guess the other saying is Powerfc is OK a Pexi Powerfc or
- 2:25:20new tech like Haltech, is that better?
- 2:25:22No, listen, I I think obviously a new computer has more options,
- 2:25:26more features. They worked out some bugs.
- 2:25:28Sales safe. Yeah, a lot of stuff they've
- 2:25:30done, which is pretty cool. I get it.
- 2:25:32You know, they evolved. But.
- 2:25:34To say that something else doesn't work, You know, I've
- 2:25:37always said every computer works great.
- 2:25:39I love you tech. You know, I like how tech as
- 2:25:42well. Microtech is still the king.
- 2:25:44The fastest rotaries in the world.
- 2:25:46Microtech, right They, they still got the fastest cars in
- 2:25:49the world. It seems like a very easy
- 2:25:50computer and people complain about them.
- 2:25:52Oh no, it's older computer, but you could.
- 2:25:55They have other technology but still can't get there.
- 2:25:57So I look at it from that perspective.
- 2:26:00But the power of C is an older computer.
- 2:26:02My brother had an FC. My personal brother had an FD
- 2:26:05that I built an engine for. I had my friend Marco from
- 2:26:08Canada come down and tune that car.
- 2:26:09Took all day to tune it, bro. He filled up the tank, left all
- 2:26:13day. I thought he brought me bro.
- 2:26:14I was like, yo, where the hell is Marco?
- 2:26:16He left. He was driving halfway around
- 2:26:18New York. Here they everywhere came back
- 2:26:20with like, no gas. I'm like, where the hell you go
- 2:26:22bro? I was tuning it, You're St.
- 2:26:23tuning it. But he tuned the power of C that
- 2:26:26I had on a 93. My brother's car was an
- 2:26:27automatic car and he would break the tires loose.
- 2:26:30Automatic in any gear. Wow, it was an amazing car.
- 2:26:32That sounds amazing. Great.
- 2:26:34It would had no issues with it. And I know that people have made
- 2:26:37five 600 horsepower with the power of C So it's an older
- 2:26:41computer doesn't work. Yes.
- 2:26:42I think what happens is less people know how to fiddle with
- 2:26:44them. That is being as particular as
- 2:26:46other people. So if they don't yield the same
- 2:26:49things that the other guy did, they frustrate, They go on the
- 2:26:51Internet and say this is a piece of shit done deal, yeah.
- 2:26:54And then if you have some sort of following everybody and their
- 2:26:57mother's going to think that's a piece of shit, yeah, it works
- 2:26:59fine. You heard that, Scooby.
- 2:27:00He's talking to you. Me and Scooby go back and forth.
- 2:27:03Power FC and Haltec. Power C is older.
- 2:27:07Yeah, it is old. Yeah.
- 2:27:08There are a lot of people that don't know how to tune it, so.
- 2:27:11Yeah, the reason why I like those older ones is like those
- 2:27:13stories you had earlier of like those guys who are.
- 2:27:16Using literally like a just a few still.
- 2:27:18Have those type of guys, the old school Puerto Rican guys, like
- 2:27:21things simple. They say todo brega.
- 2:27:23That's the saying in Spanish. They say todo brega babia que
- 2:27:25buca. That means everything works.
- 2:27:28You just got to stick with it and work out the bugs so you'll
- 2:27:30figure it out somewhere. Damn, that sounds like Josh.
- 2:27:32Do it here. 5 minutes. It didn't work.
- 2:27:34That's it. I'm done.
- 2:27:35No, go back. See what's going on.
- 2:27:36Background this injectable. You know, you'll figure it out.
- 2:27:39Yeah, And I think that's what happens with the old school
- 2:27:41guys. The old school guys will sit
- 2:27:42back. Car's not running, right?
- 2:27:44Not idling. You go do a burnout.
- 2:27:46Car doesn't clean well, it's not running.
- 2:27:48You do a quarter mile putting and backfiring.
- 2:27:51Do what? Not they'll go back to the pits,
- 2:27:53look at the car and be like, let's see what's going on here.
- 2:27:57Hold on a second. Let me go over this.
- 2:28:00Everybody get away. Leave me alone.
- 2:28:02Check wire by wire. Let's see what's going on.
- 2:28:04Go back and oh, here it is. Here's the problem.
- 2:28:06Boom. Fix the problem.
- 2:28:07OK, problems resolved. I noticed that sometimes.
- 2:28:10The younger generation, they're not like that, they're.
- 2:28:12Too. They're impulsive and they're
- 2:28:14like they want instant gratification.
- 2:28:17Yeah, we draw right to conclusions.
- 2:28:18This should draw, right? But yeah, they draw to
- 2:28:20conclusions and they don't like to go over things.
- 2:28:24I always just say if we have a problem with a car or something,
- 2:28:26I always just go. It's a car, man.
- 2:28:28We'll figure it out. Yes, it's a machine.
- 2:28:30And I think that's what happens. And I think that's what has
- 2:28:33happened with older computers and stuff like that.
- 2:28:36But I still use any old computer.
- 2:28:37I still use autotronic, which. Nobody, because the company
- 2:28:39closed. I guess it was sold off to
- 2:28:41health. So some people don't use the
- 2:28:43Ecus. I use them when they work fine
- 2:28:44for me. Yeah, so it really depends on
- 2:28:46preference and. It does.
- 2:28:48It depends on you. Remember earlier when we were
- 2:28:50talking about stickers before the podcast started?
- 2:28:53A buddy of mine, Johnny's, down here.
- 2:28:56He's got a goopy sticker on his toolbox.
- 2:29:00He's not a Rotary guy. But he has a goopy sticker
- 2:29:02that's been on there for eight years.
- 2:29:04Awesome man. Like what?
- 2:29:05That. That's the that's that's the
- 2:29:07prime example right there. What we were talking about
- 2:29:08earlier where you're like, yeah man, marketing bro.
- 2:29:10And just yeah, you want you just want to keep yourself relevant.
- 2:29:13That was a conversation you missed, Frankie.
- 2:29:14Oh yeah. But it's like you're talking
- 2:29:16about how let's say you're trying to find somewhere to get
- 2:29:18your Rotary rebuilt. Sometimes they're not just going
- 2:29:21to remember oh goopy. But like he.
- 2:29:25Constant, goopy, and it's got the Rotary in the.
- 2:29:26Constant just reminder, I guess that this guy right here.
- 2:29:31I'm not. If I The day comes when I have a
- 2:29:34Rotary bro, I'm coming to you. I'm putting his seals.
- 2:29:36In the seals, that's like the biggest thing for me.
- 2:29:38I'm like, damn, a consumable item.
- 2:29:41Which I saw this question here. It says thoughts on Renaissance
- 2:29:4413B as a relatively powerful and a motor question mark.
- 2:29:49I run their seals in my engine. Now I don't know what engine he
- 2:29:52has, but I'm assuming maybe he has an older 13B.
- 2:29:54Yeah, yeah. It works on any engine. the
- 2:29:56Renaissance is a good engine. You get it built right, It
- 2:29:58works. That's good engine.
- 2:29:59Yeah, build it right. You saw that.
- 2:30:01Great one, angels, all the RX. 8 Dude, that thing was that.
- 2:30:03Thing is a whore. That car has been sold to like
- 2:30:0520 different people, bro. Yeah, and I don't know who has
- 2:30:08it now, but they still beat the balls out of it and the car runs
- 2:30:10well. No one ever markets it in the
- 2:30:12ad. No one knows even anymore that
- 2:30:14you guys are the one that built it.
- 2:30:15It just kept getting washed more and more and more of information
- 2:30:19million. Owners, bro.
- 2:30:20I I saw it on Facebook and I was like.
- 2:30:22The owners has been around so and.
- 2:30:24Sucks. That's a good motor.
- 2:30:25Continue to build, beat on and stuff.
- 2:30:26Like somebody get that thing and treat her right?
- 2:30:29Yeah. Which is the next question.
- 2:30:30That pretty much wraps up the questions, unless you saw one.
- 2:30:34But no, no, that's it. And we're wrapping up on the 2
- 2:30:361/2 hour. Do you have anything else you'd
- 2:30:37like to say share that's good but out?
- 2:30:39There as far. As your future plans with Goopy
- 2:30:42right now. All the future plans is just,
- 2:30:44you know, just continue to stay organized.
- 2:30:46You know we have a building and. The Rotary spaceship or?
- 2:30:49Something what I'm gonna continue to do.
- 2:30:51Some things are just not feasible.
- 2:30:52Don't make you any money. There's a lot of stuff I did at
- 2:30:55one time. With the Rotary engine custom
- 2:30:57machining, I did a lot of custom stuff over the years that I
- 2:30:59realized it just doesn't pay out.
- 2:31:01It's not worth it. Yeah, you know, the commodities
- 2:31:03market on eBay kills you, right? You make a little widget.
- 2:31:06Yeah. You have a window of opportunity
- 2:31:08for you to sell that particular Valve cover for Esther team
- 2:31:11before somebody in China copies it and then puts it online.
- 2:31:15Yeah. And then you have a Wuhan
- 2:31:16competition. So then the idea is.
- 2:31:19Do you go and do you invest the money in designing that, knowing
- 2:31:22that somebody else is going to steal it from?
- 2:31:24Being replicated. Yeah, you almost have to think
- 2:31:26like that. You have to be like, damn, these
- 2:31:27people are grimy, but it's a doggie dog world out there.
- 2:31:30Or do you just continue to create unique skill sets for
- 2:31:35yourself, stuff that you only do and only you can do, and then
- 2:31:38people have to come to you for that?
- 2:31:40There's only certain things that goopie and that we do.
- 2:31:41We refurbish houses, we do certain machining, We do certain
- 2:31:44things that only I do. You know, certain things that
- 2:31:47only I do in people. You don't have to come do
- 2:31:50business with me. Yeah, I treat them well.
- 2:31:51I'll do what's right, you know, But I'm saying so that's why I.
- 2:31:54Can't wait to come by your shop. Yeah, I'm pretty excited about
- 2:31:56this one. We gotta.
- 2:31:57I was gonna talk to you about this, Carl, but remember how we
- 2:31:59were talking about the shop tour thing?
- 2:32:01Yeah. Yeah, we should probably get on
- 2:32:02that. Yeah.
- 2:32:03Yeah. So I'm a I'm a Rotary shop tour
- 2:32:06Rotary, you know, parts. Yeah.
- 2:32:08And building and machining, that's what I have come down to.
- 2:32:11Yeah. You know, over the years I've
- 2:32:13wanted to like work on cars and I probably have more name
- 2:32:17recognition. If I had like if I worked on fds
- 2:32:20or something like that, you know FD.
- 2:32:22Well, to me, I can't even believe you have enough
- 2:32:25customers to. You only work on rotaries and
- 2:32:28you don't even work on the car. You just, yeah, you're basically
- 2:32:31a machine shop for Rotary engines and you still have
- 2:32:33enough business to keep it going, which is amazing.
- 2:32:36I turn away work. Yeah, I turn away.
- 2:32:38I actually have a lot of builders in the area.
- 2:32:40I have a guy named Eddie Gonzales over here in Yonkers.
- 2:32:42He does. I send him work all the time.
- 2:32:44He's an amazing old school Rotary guy.
- 2:32:46And sometimes I'm like, hey dude, do you want to take this
- 2:32:48job? I I can't do it.
- 2:32:49I'm too busy. It's not what I do best.
- 2:32:51And yeah, so I send a lot of people work.
- 2:32:53That's crazy. Man, yeah, I fucking love that,
- 2:32:55man. And I hope that hope the Lord
- 2:32:57keeps blessing you with with opportunity because yeah, yeah
- 2:32:59bro, Like hearing where you started from and how the fuck
- 2:33:05you got to where you are now. I don't even know where the fuck
- 2:33:08you're going to had the rest. Of Yeah, you have a crazy story
- 2:33:11I like Yeah. I hope those seals go down in
- 2:33:13history in in in the world of Rotary, because.
- 2:33:16That's just. A Well, they've been around for
- 2:33:18a while, so everybody knows who's who and that sort of
- 2:33:20stuff. I think what has happened in the
- 2:33:21last five years is not just with me, but just in parts in
- 2:33:26general. Someone makes a S13 header,
- 2:33:31right, S13 header, goes into some, you know, Youtubers car
- 2:33:36and automatically that YouTube now is the gospel on that
- 2:33:39header, right. So now his word is bond and
- 2:33:43whatever he says with that S13 header.
- 2:33:46Is whatever is. Everybody's going to default to
- 2:33:48that. So now he that header, he sells
- 2:33:50that header online and that's the best header there is.
- 2:33:53Why? Because Joe Blow from the
- 2:33:55YouTube with that S13 says that header.
- 2:33:57So now this guy over here has 30 years manufacturing headers and
- 2:34:01he's got this amazing design. Amazing.
- 2:34:04Wells has done all the all the R&D for it, but he can't sell
- 2:34:09it. Why?
- 2:34:10Because. Kids nowadays and the people
- 2:34:12will just gravitate towards exactly.
- 2:34:14But that's where I'm like I look at that as an opportunity
- 2:34:17because you could reach out. You look at that as an
- 2:34:19opportunity, but at the same time that also that also causes
- 2:34:25people aren't able to differentiate quality anymore.
- 2:34:27No, you just got to find one of those Youtubers and give them
- 2:34:31true. Your head.
- 2:34:32But meeting up with sometimes with a lot of people with brand
- 2:34:35name and stuff like that, it's sort of like it's a double edged
- 2:34:37sword, yeah. Yeah, I think the best thing to
- 2:34:41do really is for you as a person to build a brand that you have
- 2:34:45enough people that use it and say bro, this thing works, this
- 2:34:48thing works, this thing works, this thing works.
- 2:34:50Yeah, that should definitely be the.
- 2:34:50Base You get the black sheep and he can complain all he wants,
- 2:34:53but the other ones are going to drown him out because they're
- 2:34:55going to be like yo bro. Yeah, that's a good.
- 2:34:58Look at you in your alignments, Frankie.
- 2:35:00Yeah. How many alignments do you have?
- 2:35:01Real good ones. Well, we just, we offer drift
- 2:35:05alignments stuff like. That right?
- 2:35:06Do they work? Yeah.
- 2:35:07People are happy with them. People are happy with.
- 2:35:09Them. Is there anyone, anybody that's
- 2:35:11not happy with them? Not that I've heard.
- 2:35:12Has there been anybody that has sort of not been happy with
- 2:35:15them? Not that I heard.
- 2:35:16From them. OK, fine.
- 2:35:17But now you have enough people that are happy, happy, happy.
- 2:35:19OK, so the one that comes and he starts complaining about stuff,
- 2:35:22he'd be like HM. OK, maybe I did something wrong.
- 2:35:24And then if you do do something wrong, you fix it.
- 2:35:26If you didn't do nothing wrong and he still doesn't believe it,
- 2:35:29still complaints about it, you say, Well, yeah, wrong.
- 2:35:32All these people are happy then with you.
- 2:35:35Yeah, once you try to remedy the situation.
- 2:35:36If you can't remedy him, kick the hell out, yeah?
- 2:35:39I mean, yeah. No, he's right though.
- 2:35:41That's how it goes. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:35:43You try to fix it. Some people are just, they're
- 2:35:47just those type. Of people.
- 2:35:48They're just just we're going to leave it at that.
- 2:35:51It is what it is. You could.
- 2:35:54They could find you at at Goopy performance on Instagram.
- 2:35:56Yeah, go to my Instagram page. If you need apex seals or
- 2:35:59anything. Yeah, yeah, we have more.

- 2:36:14I gotta update one of these. I'll have all the info and the
- 2:36:16show notes at the bottom of the podcast.
- 2:36:18So, but thank you so much John, for coming like this has been.
- 2:36:23So fun. Yeah, I'm glad.
- 2:36:24I'm pretty sure I'm gonna look like an idiot this whole
- 2:36:26podcast, cuz I'm just smiling. We don't know about Rotary.
- 2:36:28No, cuz I'm just smiling the whole time, cuz I'm like damn,
- 2:36:31like this is sick. Yeah, like I didn't.
- 2:36:34I don't. I never knew a lot about
- 2:36:36rotaries. I learned a lot today about
- 2:36:37them. And I hope our listeners did as
- 2:36:39well. And thank you so much for your
- 2:36:41time. No problem.
- 2:36:42Yeah, but well, that's. Close this out.
- 2:36:45Malcolm. Thank you guys so much for
- 2:36:46listening. Leave us a review on Spotify,
- 2:36:49comment on our videos and we'll see you on the next one.
- 2:36:52Please. Bye.
- 2:36:55That's it. Yeah.
- 2:36:58Now we have like a little outro that plays on the.
- 2:37:08Music Whoo. Goopy performance man.
- 2:37:11Episode was full of fire. Yeah, no, that was a really good
- 2:37:14episode. We had no idea what to expect.
- 2:37:16Goopy is a friend of a friend I get, or multiple friends.
- 2:37:21Our friends Louis and Louis come by all the time.
- 2:37:25And they always talk about goofy performance and rotaries and
- 2:37:27this and that. And we're like, what the hell
- 2:37:29are you talking about? So we had to see it for
- 2:37:31ourselves. Yeah, so he Well, actually, I
- 2:37:33heard from Louis that he was watching our podcast videos or
- 2:37:38something. Oh, really?
- 2:37:39He said. He was laughing.
- 2:37:40He was having a good time. So I was like, well, tell him to
- 2:37:42come on. Oh shit.
- 2:37:43Why not so? Yeah, really good conversation.
- 2:37:47A lot of information in that one.
- 2:37:49I have decided that I only want to interview people that are
- 2:37:53above the age of 40 now. Because there's always so much
- 2:37:56wisdom when the older gentleman come on.
- 2:37:58Yeah man, it's just it's way more interesting too.
- 2:38:00So much knowledge. There's just more.
- 2:38:02I mean, obviously it's more interesting.
- 2:38:03There's more shit to talk about. They've been through.
- 2:38:05Yeah, more shit, Yeah, Said like Gen.
- 2:38:07Z's. Just like, yeah.
- 2:38:09Cars cool. Yeah, I hit the wall.
- 2:38:11Yeah, yeah, I hit the wall ones. But yeah, I really enjoyed that
- 2:38:16one. So if you guys enjoyed it,
- 2:38:18please share it. We would.
- 2:38:21You know, we're trying to, you know, we're trying to get big.
- 2:38:23We're trying to be big time. We got to share these episodes.
- 2:38:25Please leave us a review. You like this episode?
- 2:38:27You like what you're hearing? Leave us a review on Spotify,
- 2:38:30Apple, Google, wherever the hell you're.

- 2:38:34having Jay Leno on here. Yeah, we're just trying to get
- 2:38:37Jay Leno on here. So, you know, maybe that should
- 2:38:39be our new thing that we bring up all the time.
- 2:38:41Eventually he'll hear about it. Yeah.
- 2:38:43Yeah. Somehow some way?

- 2:39:56You just don't think so. HKS oh, we talked about that
- 2:39:59last time. The Gretty Schiff Noms, we
- 2:40:02talked about that. We talked about the US body kit.
- 2:40:05OK, so the only things that are new are KTS arms.
- 2:40:07A lot of arms. We got the work spell, quick
- 2:40:11release in black, and most importantly.
- 2:40:17Is the key performance plug and play fuel pump.

- 2:40:33It's funny cuz I was literally just thinking how come we
