- 0:35But here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:37A newbie to the guest rotation. Ben Hutchins covers Iowa State
- 0:42for a variety of different newspapers.
- 0:45Waterloo. He can be found in the Quad City
- 0:49Times, a couple of other ones as well.
- 0:52So Ben Hutchins on the Iowa State beat.
- 0:54We've never spoken with him. Trent today we will do that
- 0:57coming up at 12:30. TJ met the press yesterday, so
- 1:00we'll recap that pick Ben's brain on on the upcoming
- 1:03football season. Cyclone related topics with Ben
- 1:06Hutchins coming up here at 12:30.
- 1:08Hour number two, David Kaplan in his regular spots and Shurion
- 1:13Stone of Iowa sponsors Cappy. We'll talk Chicago sports with
- 1:16the cap man that kind of expand, I'm guess we'll get his take on
- 1:20the All Star game from last night, etcetera.
- 1:23And then we will finish things up with our friend Matt Rudy,
- 1:26who wrote, has written about golf, continues to do so for 30
- 1:30years thereabouts, will pick his brain on the Open Championship
- 1:34that begins in about what, 12 hours from right now.
- 1:37So you'll see the first tee shots, first few players,
- 1:40Absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:42Before you called it. A night we got to be locked and
- 1:43loaded and ready to go and see if we can maybe get a rabbit
- 1:46early. We can go chasing stuff that
- 1:48early on. Okay, I got you.
- 1:50My dance card is pretty full, as you learned during our
- 1:52television show earlier to this morning.
- 1:55Yeah, you've got a bunch, but as long as it's a matter of me, you
- 1:58bet, as long as it's profitable for whoever wins or if you got a
- 2:01saver ticket in there. But nonetheless.
- 2:03So that's what's coming up on our program plays of the day.
- 2:06Trent has this will be fun coming up here at at just before
- 2:112:00. I'll be giving out some golf.
- 2:13You have to, right? You have to.
- 2:14There's a couple of the WNBA games, but one of them was it
- 2:18took a significant hit as far as viewership.
- 2:21One would assume with the fever and the liberty with the news
- 2:23that Caitlin Clark, nothing official yet.
- 2:25She's got to be done for some period of time.
- 2:28She was in tears walking off the court very quickly grabbed the
- 2:30towel and put it around her head and just buried her head in the
- 2:34towel. She she's hurt, she's the groin
- 2:36is is a significant injury. It's unfortunate.
- 2:40The All Star game is in Indianapolis for one reason
- 2:43that's Caitlin Clark and she's not going to be able to answer
- 2:46the bell. She was going to participate in
- 2:49the three-point shooting contest.
- 2:50Not sure why she's 2 of 35 on the road.
- 2:53She is the three pointer with jazz jism is the Home Run Derby
- 2:56at this point. I I'm just dumbfounded by that
- 2:59trend. I really am.
- 3:00The fact that, you know, she, I mean, how many big shots you
- 3:04made in your life, you just can't make a three, just a safer
- 3:07life at this point. But it's more than that.
- 3:09It's a significant injury and how this is going to affect the
- 3:13team going forward remains to be seen, but it's very clearly this
- 3:17is something that has been bugging her all season long.
- 3:20Hindsight being what it is, she probably shouldn't have played
- 3:22at Carver, but the building sold out and sold out in 2 minutes.
- 3:25She wants to get back and you know her state and entertain her
- 3:29fans and give and I have one more game at Carver so I
- 3:34understand why she did. But man, looking back on it, you
- 3:36wonder if that was the right decision.
- 3:39There is some breaking news for you.
- 3:41This has just been released by the Indiana Fever.
- 3:43Their injury report for tonight, Caitlin Clark listed as
- 3:48questionable. Come on.
- 3:50Yeah. Now it is the right Droid injury
- 3:52are. They doing the liberty a favor
- 3:54because the secondary well, the ticket's already gone.
- 3:57The secondary market maybe that that's going to crash.
- 4:00Well, look, it I I, I hope I'm pleasantly surprised, but I just
- 4:03can't see it. I truly just can't see it.
- 4:08Yeah. I mean, you, you saw her.
- 4:09Yeah, shut it down, right. It's as simple as that.
- 4:13And can they stand contention? For a playoff bit, that's the
- 4:18question without her. If they shut it down for.
- 4:23Two weeks I might even err on there completely err on the side
- 4:27of caution. So the regular season doesn't
- 4:29end until September 11th? Right, you've got plenty of
- 4:31time. So say let's target like the
- 4:34middle of August, OK, let's see August 11th, 12th.
- 4:38So the 12th are home for the for Dallas.
- 4:40Let's see you next. They get the Mystics coming in
- 4:43on Friday, August 15th. You give her a month.
- 4:47OK. Can you keep your head above
- 4:48water if that's the case? I mean, if if you play that
- 4:52direction, they are 12 and 10 right now in good shape to be a
- 4:56playoff team. That would mean she would miss.
- 4:58So I'm going to count it up here, 5678910 games that she
- 5:03would miss. If you give her a month off, is
- 5:06that enough because she's come back Feels like too quickly
- 5:09twice beginning of the season. She shouldn't have played in
- 5:11that exhibition game in Carver. I do not think it's a stretch to
- 5:14say that we look at what has happened this season.
- 5:18He doesn't play in the first pre season game, but he plays at
- 5:21Carver. And did that lead to more
- 5:22injuries playing through another injury that led to what we're
- 5:26dealing with now? Now did they expand the playoffs
- 5:28with the expansion of the league overall?
- 5:30Is it still 8 teams that get in? Yeah, just 8 get in.
- 5:34And, and right now they are in the sixth spot and there's a
- 5:39whole bunch of teams close, including Golden State,
- 5:41including how about Las Vegas under 500?
- 5:44I mean, everything has to end at some point.
- 5:46But I don't know. It's it's it's going to be
- 5:49fascinating to watch as you try to navigate your weight.
- 5:52Now the good news is football will be here.
- 5:55A lot of people's attention as I'm guessing that the the number
- 6:02of TV viewers is going to dissipate.
- 6:04If she's not on the floor, we'll see if she can play or not.
- 6:06I'm surprised that's the actual what's Vegas doing?
- 6:09Here's a better question. What is Las Vegas doing with the
- 6:12number? They posted it.
- 6:13It's 10. It's 10 and there was no line on
- 6:17this game last night. Middle of the afternoon
- 6:20yesterday, there was, and I'm guessing they were waiting for,
- 6:24not anticipating a Caitlin Clark injury, but just wondering, you
- 6:29know, if there would be something that would necessitate
- 6:31a massive number swing. They posted the number, it
- 6:34opened at 9 and is now up to 10. And with the news that you just
- 6:39mentioned that she is questionable for tonight, I'd be
- 6:43shocked. I do wonder, you know, we know
- 6:46quarterbacks, a good quarterback in the NFL is worth 6 1/2, seven
- 6:50points. Also depends on the backup,
- 6:52depends on a lot of different factors.
- 6:53But when you're looking at that top tier quarterback, that's
- 6:56normally what it is. Basketball players in the NBA,
- 6:59depending on, you know, star players, usually it's not as
- 7:01high as you think, 2 1/2, three, 3 1/2 maybe depending, again, of
- 7:05kind of what the backup looks like.
- 7:07What's Caitlin Clark worth to their power question?
- 7:09Great question. It'll be a Kenny White question.
- 7:11Who does those power numbers? I would love to know that, you
- 7:15know, we, we should find that out.
- 7:16That's a, I mean, I, I'm guessing maybe it's come down a
- 7:19little bit because the numbers aren't there like we anticipate.
- 7:21I mean, I thought she was going to tear the league up this year
- 7:24with the off season. She put in the break from
- 7:26basketball, etcetera, right? We just thought that she was
- 7:29going to come out and you know, the perception that she was
- 7:33snubbed etcetera. So there was a reason she was
- 7:35taking all the money she was for MVPI.
- 7:37Think she was off as the second choice.
- 7:39But anyways, we'll see where it goes.
- 7:41They got to win last night. The officiating is just as as
- 7:44bad as I mean, it's getting no better, unfortunately.
- 7:48So let's get to the All Star game from last night and in
- 7:51particular the end and I and I got a question because you and I
- 7:55obviously talk a lot of sports wagering on our program.
- 7:58Our primary sponsor is, after all, circus sports.
- 8:02Were you aware of the format? Once we get to the end of the
- 8:05game, did you know a swing off was coming?
- 8:08That's. The first I've heard of it, I
- 8:09did. You did, Yeah, when they
- 8:11implemented it what, a couple years back.
- 8:12I remember, I think and I think we talked about it at the time
- 8:16and. It's been on a side out of mine
- 8:17right ever since that. And that's got.
- 8:19Into Do you remember watching the game last night where Joe
- 8:21Davis said and by the way, he's good.
- 8:23I miss Joe Buck. Yes, I, yes.
- 8:25Right. He Joe Davis is fine.
- 8:26I miss Joe Buck. Joe Bach, when he hears voice.
- 8:29You're at a really big game, right?
- 8:32And. You don't get that with Joe
- 8:33David. You don't.
- 8:34It might get there. Maybe 10 years maybe.
- 8:37But he didn't he say, am I making this up that we we're
- 8:42coming to the end of the game? Well, we got some bad news for
- 8:45you. Do you remember him saying that?
- 8:46I don't know. I'm sure that what he was
- 8:49referencing was we're tied up at six, six and America, you're
- 8:54waiting for extra innings. Uh huh.
- 8:57And I'm sure he said it. Somebody help me out here.
- 9:02We got some bad news for you. And I'm guessing that was
- 9:05directed at all the Me's out there that either had forgotten
- 9:09about the new format or were just expecting whether it be
- 9:12the, you know, the ghost runner is second base, but mortal,
- 9:14legitimate baseball. And then come to find out that
- 9:20half the guys are gone. Right, Yeah, They're taking
- 9:23their private jets. They're they're on their way
- 9:25because they want to get a 2 day vacation in a minute.
- 9:26I I understand, yeah, I, I get it.
- 9:28I get why they're leaving. They have no, there's there,
- 9:31there's no requirement to stick around.
- 9:32They were there on Monday. They did all the press
- 9:34conferences, They did those requirements, They did the the
- 9:39red carpet, which is kind of new, but kind of cool, kind of
- 9:42cool to see the families and the because when you see, you know,
- 9:46162 games on the road trip, you know, these guys are getting off
- 9:50like you come to work, right T-shirt and shorts and flip
- 9:53flops. And then the red carpet was kind
- 9:57of cool. But so I get why they're
- 9:59leaving. But when they brought out Boone
- 10:04and and they brought out Dave Roberts to announce the the
- 10:09swing off contestants and then you get to the end and you're I,
- 10:14I honestly, I'm wondering this Trent was Jonathan Aranda, as
- 10:18surprised as the country was that he was named to take me.
- 10:23You want me to do that? So on ESPN.com, Jeff Passan has
- 10:27a great article talking about kind of the inside and there's a
- 10:30part with Kyle still stores the the Florida player, the Mariners
- 10:34player, the Marliners player, where the bench, the coach for
- 10:37the Dodgers comes up to him and says probably need to go win
- 10:42after Suarez got hit in the hand and Stauer said you're effing
- 10:46with me. He says, no, seriously, I'm not
- 10:48this is real. He just thought he he just
- 10:50thought he was going to be end up.
- 10:51He wasn't going to play. And now not only you're playing,
- 10:55the play is something that he didn't prepare before and you
- 10:58don't prepare. For that.
- 11:00You don't prepare for that kind of circumstance that you're
- 11:02going to have to go into. You had all that told, kind of.
- 11:06Liked it translated. I hate myself.
- 11:09I know I hate myself. I started to pick up the remote
- 11:12and turn it off because old man Miller was yelling at the
- 11:15clouds. Are you kidding me?
- 11:17And then I stuck around and I'm kinda glad that I did.
- 11:20You know, it was it was entertaining.
- 11:22Especially Schwarber right now. He shouldn't have won the MVP.
- 11:25I'm sorry. Yeah, right.
- 11:27That was an exhibition. You know, you come up here 3
- 11:29balls. OK, big spot, I'll give you
- 11:31that. But you're all for in the game,
- 11:33right? I mean, if you had an Alonzo
- 11:35ticket, I'd be sick to my stomach.
- 11:37Right? Three run shot.
- 11:38Yeah, the American League came back.
- 11:40Came back. But you hit a three run home
- 11:41run. If I had a Pete Alonzo MVP to
- 11:44got to be puking. So let's let's stay on the
- 11:48sports wagering theme for just a second or two more, because I do
- 11:51want to get to what I thought was maybe the highlight of the
- 11:54entire night. And if you watch it, you've got
- 11:56a pretty good idea where you know where I'm going.
- 11:58Let's go back to Monday and it's round one of the Home Run Derby
- 12:01again. I didn't watch a didn't watch a
- 12:03swing. Glad that I didn't.
- 12:05I just I just I've had enough of the Home Run Derby.
- 12:07If you love it, more power to you enjoy it.
- 12:10If you bet on it, you don't have at it, But apparently Rooker
- 12:14kind of got short changed a little bit in the first round.
- 12:18So he and Cal Raleigh, the the big dumper the the eventual
- 12:23winner of the of the event in their first round both finished
- 12:27with seventeen home runs. They went to a measure off and
- 12:31by, I don't know, half an inch. Cal Raleigh's home runs went
- 12:36further than Rooker's. He's declared the winner of that
- 12:38round. He moves on, but but Rooker is
- 12:43batting. He gets to 17 or gets to, he
- 12:47gets to his his number and there's still time on the clock
- 12:52and the, I want to call him a batting practice.
- 12:55Whoever's pitching to. Rooker reaches his hand into the
- 12:59bucket where the balls are stored.
- 13:02Wait a second. There's no balls.
- 13:04It's empty, right? So Rucker, his time is expiring
- 13:11and there's nothing happening. And again, he would have had to
- 13:14hit one out of the ballpark, but he wasn't given a chance.
- 13:18So. Should we be allowed to bet on
- 13:21this? Will racing and gaming
- 13:22commissions around the country take a look at this and say, you
- 13:26know what, maybe this is a bridge too far because don't
- 13:29forget, and you pointed this on our TV show so you didn't
- 13:31forget. These kind of bets were late in
- 13:34coming to Iowa. I'm wondering will they look at
- 13:38this? The NFL draft was something late
- 13:39coming around in Nevada. The NFL draft was something that
- 13:43wasn't there because these are exhibitions, These aren't well,
- 13:46and that's a completely different Rd. when you're
- 13:48talking about a draft. But what it pertains to
- 13:50something like this and you have something that are there hard
- 13:54and fast rules? Do you get a bucket of balls?
- 13:56Is that in? Because he took a couple of
- 13:59swings. Beg your pardon?
- 14:01He took a couple of pitches. Do you get a bucket of balls and
- 14:04everybody gets? An endless bucket?
- 14:06Or do you only get? 40, is it 40, right?
- 14:08I don't know if that's in there. Then you're good.
- 14:11Yeah, you're good. But if it is as many pitches as
- 14:14you can hit in the time allotted, well, that's a
- 14:16different conversation. And what if somebody gets short
- 14:19changed and you look at and they had two less balls in there,
- 14:21right. But when you're putting a
- 14:24wagering component behind it, it becomes difficult.
- 14:27I'm sure that's something in Major League Baseball and their
- 14:29partners because DraftKings and Will, every commercial, they're
- 14:34all over, they're all over those commercials.
- 14:36And I would anticipate if there is some of that questionable
- 14:41kind of part of it. Is there a certain amount of
- 14:43pitches, certain amount of balls?
- 14:44Is that all piece of it? If it's not, they need to button
- 14:48it up. Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:49And I'm gonna guess the big entities will talk to baseball
- 14:51for sure. I'm making sure that that
- 14:53happens. You have to do this or we're
- 14:55gonna because let's face it, there's a lot of people tuning
- 14:58in because they bet the event. Yes, absolutely.
- 15:00John Kaufman. Thank you, John Kaufman.
- 15:03The bad news comment, according to John, was directed at the
- 15:06year that the game ended in a tie.
- 15:09Uh huh. So, And that was Milwaukee.
- 15:12It was in Milwaukee, Yeah, because Selig was.
- 15:14There Selig was. There and they.
- 15:16That went over well. Fox cut to him how many?
- 15:18It felt like 20 times they cut to him as it was.
- 15:21Sinkage further further in his chair.
- 15:24So thank you, John Kaufman. I I didn't understand what he
- 15:27meant at the time, but so here's the other part of it.
- 15:30Let's go to last night. Some depend where you depend
- 15:34where you bet. In your case, we know you bet it
- 15:37circa. You bet the American League.
- 15:39I did. You got a refund.
- 15:43No bet. Caesars declared this a no bet.
- 15:47DraftKings and FanDuel paid out to the National League.
- 15:51So is this a case? And, and we say it knowing that,
- 15:55hell, we don't do it. Know your house rules.
- 16:00I will tell you when I get to Circa on Monday, I'm.
- 16:03Hey, Lucas. Hey, come with me.
- 16:05First time in Vegas. Let's go sit down.
- 16:06Let's read the house rules. Before you do anything.
- 16:09Before we roll the dice, before we throw better bucks on black
- 16:12stay. Away from the bar.
- 16:13Yeah, no drink. It's time to go over the house
- 16:15rules. Let's look through.
- 16:17Look, we're not trying to make a living as a sports wagerer.
- 16:22If you are, then yes, absolutely, you need to know
- 16:24those house rules. But here's the other part.
- 16:27Don't bitch and whine and complain.
- 16:29If you had the National League and it turned into a no bet,
- 16:33that's house rules and it's there and it's laid out.
- 16:36It's just the reality of the situation.
- 16:39You can't complain if you don't know your rules.
- 16:41Yeah, and they. Would have considered the game a
- 16:42tie last night. So although DraftKings didn't,
- 16:46apparently they considered it a win for the National League and
- 16:49FanDuel was the other one that paid the bet.
- 16:51Yes, Caesar Circus said here's your money back.
- 16:54Better, you bet, the National League or the American League.
- 16:56Well, fascinating stuff, but pretty entertaining.
- 16:59Now, here's where I want to go with you to what I thought was
- 17:01maybe as as compelling of television I've seen in a long
- 17:04time. And it's amazing what technology
- 17:07allows us to do. As much as I hate it.
- 17:10Well, you know, 'cause I'm holding that to try to keep up.
- 17:13But yeah, I'm talking about the Hank Aaron thing.
- 17:15Oh, yes. Oh.
- 17:16My. God, what a phenomenal 2 1/2
- 17:20minutes or whatever it was of Television 7. 15 on 7/15 just in
- 17:25Oh I. Forgot about that.
- 17:27I have it. But to be to super superimpose
- 17:31his face to hear both the Vince Scully and the the guy's name
- 17:37from he's from Iowa, for God's sakes.
- 17:41Milo, Milo Perry, Milo Hamilton to hear his call, 'cause he was
- 17:46the Braves announcer, the reason that Vince Scully was there, he
- 17:49was the Dodgers announcer. And I'd like, I'd liked Vince
- 17:55Scully's home run better just because it brought history in
- 17:58into it. And I thought he, as he
- 18:01typically does, was able to weave what's going.
- 18:05I mean, he's so good at what he did, right.
- 18:07But the way they showed him rounding the bases.
- 18:09But it was when the ball made contact with the bat and kind of
- 18:13the firework that went off the trajectory of the ball is to
- 18:17where it landed. If you haven't seen it, if
- 18:21you're on Twitter, it's all over Twitter.
- 18:23I'm guessing you'd find it anywhere, YouTube or wherever it
- 18:26is you go. But good God, that was
- 18:28incredible. It really and truly was April
- 18:328th. 1974. The.
- 18:35Moment the take us in a little bit to you because I mean I'm
- 18:41it's a highlight of my youth that I saw feels like I've seen
- 18:43that thing 1000 times. Huge part of baseball history
- 18:47and the fans on the field at that time in the South.
- 18:50Yeah. Where?
- 18:52But find Vin Scully solve a call.
- 18:53Rather, he weaves in the where the a black man hit it and the
- 18:58it's phenomenal, the call there. Was the negativity in hearing,
- 19:03you know, Hank threats Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:05How dare you break baby's record.
- 19:08A black man doing that how? I mean right at that time period
- 19:13in the. South.
- 19:15And it happens and then you have people on the field.
- 19:17It just, it's unthinkable. And think of that moment today,
- 19:22if there was that kind of negativity and racism that was
- 19:25surrounding something that would be happening and just imagining
- 19:28then Oh yeah, just let him out on the field.
- 19:31Right, you can't. You can't.
- 19:33You can't wrap. Your mind around the number.
- 19:35Of death threats that he received as he got closer to the
- 19:38mark. I remember that vividly.
- 19:40I remember the shot vividly. Look in my mind and I'll go to
- 19:45my graves. I, I think I was watching this
- 19:47when it happened. I believe I was watching it, but
- 19:50I've, I've seen it so many times.
- 19:52Maybe I wasn't, but it sure seems like like it's a memory
- 19:57that I have. Let's find the Vin Scully.
- 19:59We'll get to that because it's so good.
- 20:01Vin Scully calls it Milo Hamilton calls it Milo Hamilton,
- 20:04who finished up as the Astros announcer.
- 20:07He was the Braves announcer at the time.
- 20:09Vin Scully, of course, was there with the Dodgers.
- 20:11So they played the beginning of Vin Scully's.
- 20:15Call of the home run and then the, you know, the final
- 20:18whatever it was 30 seconds or whatever of Milo Hamilton's
- 20:22call. It's really, really good.
- 20:24While you search for that, let's get baseball Benny in here.
- 20:27He wants to chime in. Hello Benny, how are you?
- 20:30I am doing. Absolutely fantastic.
- 20:32Let's not forget there was a third Hall of Fame announcer
- 20:35that did the call of that. Was it Kurt?
- 20:37Gowdy. Kurt Gowdy was on the national
- 20:39broadcast, so there was a national broadcast.
- 20:42Yes, there. Was Yeah, Yep.
- 20:43Got. 3 Hall of Famers, Hamilton, of course then, and Gowdy.
- 20:48And they're all in the Hall of Fame as announced.
- 20:50So who? Would he have called it for Kurt
- 20:53ABC? It was the NBC.
- 20:55NBC yeah, OK, the NBSC game of the week, but yeah, terrible
- 21:00that we've come down to a a swing off because we can't get
- 21:04enough pitchers or we can't everybody.
- 21:06'S gone, I know. It's it's, and I get it, you
- 21:10can't have unlimited pitching staff, but they almost need to
- 21:13get 34 or 36 million rosters. If we're going to pitch a pitch
- 21:16or 1/3 of an inning or 2/3 of an inning, just add more pitchers
- 21:21to the mix because nobody wants to see a home.
- 21:23We got Home Run Derby on Monday night.
- 21:25We don't need to see it or put ghost runners on again like they
- 21:28do in the regular no. I'd have gone for that.
- 21:30That's where I thought that they were going.
- 21:32So what about this, boys? I'm going to ask you both there
- 21:35if there was a carrot at the end of the game, like the winning
- 21:39team gets the extra, the home field advantage in the World
- 21:43Series. Remember when we had that?
- 21:44Yes, hated it. You did.
- 21:47I did OK. I hated it as well.
- 21:50I that the the team that gets deserves home field is over 162
- 21:54games. Give it a team.
- 21:55What's? Best record.
- 21:56So then you. Can't, so you can't expect them
- 21:57to stick around is where I'm going.
- 21:59I mean, if there was does Otani and Guerrero and Judge, are they
- 22:04still there If their if their league's going to get home
- 22:07field? I I love.
- 22:08Betty's idea of giving five extra All Star nods and you're
- 22:11only available if the game goes X-ray.
- 22:14That's it. There is nothing that the
- 22:16manager feels bad and this is going to be this kids only shot.
- 22:20Yes. Absolutely, but you are a deep
- 22:22reserve, whatever you want to term it.
- 22:24You are an extra ending only player.
- 22:26But 5 pitchers on both sides, maybe two extra batters that are
- 22:29there. The only way you're going to you
- 22:31get to go to the All Star game though.
- 22:32And for how many of these guys this is probably going to be
- 22:34their only shot. But for those say 7 players, you
- 22:38are only an extra ending player. Got a problem with that?
- 22:41I don't. I just wonder if you if you'll
- 22:43find five guys willing to do that to give up two games maybe,
- 22:49but. You have you have people like
- 22:51that were complaining about Miserables.
- 22:52That's what I'm saying. It's going to be yeah, but you
- 22:55had. You had all these guys that, but
- 22:57first they want to be invited to an All Star game, especially if
- 23:00it's their first cup of coffee and they're a middle reliever
- 23:02like Adrian Moorhone. Well, those.
- 23:05Are the guys, those are the guys that you invite.
- 23:07I don't think you invite the stars to, you know, to sit on
- 23:10the bench. I and I'm not sure you invite
- 23:12the White Sox closer back next year as well.
- 23:15I mean, good God, talk about throwing a monkey, Wretch.
- 23:18Listen to the trade deadline, for crying out loud.
- 23:21Shane Smith plucks Suarez right in the elbow and all.
- 23:26Anyways, Betty, thanks for the call.
- 23:27Appreciate. We got to move on, brother.
- 23:29Appreciate it. All right, So what have you?
- 23:30What have you found, Trent? I have.
- 23:32The the clip from last night and it's a little over 2 minutes but
- 23:38does it sound? Good.
- 23:39Yeah, go ahead. Let's.
- 23:40Play it it's it's summer, the day after the All Star game.
- 23:44Let's hear it and. It doesn't take a mind Raider to
- 23:48the collective mind that's here in this ballpark.
- 23:51Tonight they came to see him pass the Bay.
- 23:59Once. Again, a standing ovation for
- 24:02Henry Aaron, though. The confrontation.
- 24:06For the second time, Aaron walked in the second inning.
- 24:10He means the time. Run at the plate now and we'll
- 24:13see what Downing does down at the Belt.
- 24:16He delivers and he's low ball 1 and that just adds to the
- 24:20pressure. He's sitting on 7/14.
- 24:30Here's the pitch by Downing swinging the drive in the left
- 24:45center field. That ball is going to be out of
- 24:50here. It's gone.
- 24:53It's 7:15. There's a new home run champion
- 24:56all time and it's Henry Aaron. The fireworks are going.
- 25:01Henry Aaron is coming around third, his teammates at home
- 25:05place and listen to this crowd. What a marvelous moment for
- 25:18baseball. What a marvelous moment for
- 25:21Atlanta and the state of Georgia.
- 25:23What a marvelous moment for the country in the world.
- 25:39I think that people can look at me and say, you know, he was a
- 25:47great baseball player, but he was even a greater human being.
- 26:00That's outstanding. Mike Mahon, a former Sid Drake,
- 26:04just sent me a reminder. So one of the guys chasing or
- 26:07following Hank Aaron around third base and this is 1974.
- 26:13Do you, can you see the picture? Can you, can you see actually
- 26:17have it in front of you? I don't know.
- 26:19It's Craig. Sager.
- 26:21Really. Yes.
- 26:23And he told the story on on Rich Eisen's show.
- 26:26Craig Sager is one of the young people following Henry Aaron
- 26:31around third base. I see the picture, isn't that
- 26:35incredible? Wow, you know, Fast forward,
- 26:39right, you find we're going to be late for Ben Hutchins, but
- 26:42find a Vin Scully call because you heard a little bit of it.
- 26:45It's so good the way he we weaves, you know, a period of
- 26:51time in the country from the 60s, you know, prior to that
- 26:56into the home run call and into the South of what was going on.
- 26:59It really is remarkable. Here's Vin Scully, the. 2nd
- 27:02inning he means the tying run at the plate now, so we'll see what
- 27:07Downing does. Al at the belt delivers and he's
- 27:10low ball 1 and that's the booze. Yeah.
- 27:14Yeah, it's awesome. Proud.
- 27:16Booing Downing has to ignore the sound effects and stay a
- 27:22professional and pitch his game. One ball and no strikes.
- 27:26Aaron waiting the outfield deep and straight away.
- 27:29Fastball is a high drive in the deep left center field, but that
- 27:33goes back to the Fan City car. What a marvelous moment for
- 28:04baseball. What a marvelous moment for
- 28:07Atlanta and the state of Georgia.
- 28:10What a marvelous moment for the country in the world.
- 28:13A black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep
- 28:17South for breaking a record of an all time baseball idol.
- 28:22And it is a great moment for all of us and particularly for Henry
- 28:27Aaron who was met at a home plate not only by every member
- 28:32of the Braves, but by his father and mother.
- 28:36He threw his arms around his father, and as he left the home
- 28:40plate area, his mother came running across the grass, threw
- 28:45her arms around his neck, kissed him for all she was worried, I
- 28:51mean. This this cat, Vince Scully, I'm
- 28:54referring to he that's wasn't scripted.
- 28:56Yeah, right. It's just what if I'm way with
- 29:00words? It's there's a reason and
- 29:02they're a part of it. Why he's referred to and revered
- 29:07amongst baseball fans about as peers.
- 29:10Oh my God, he's good, so good. Let's take a time out Ben
- 29:13Hutchins on Iowa State. He's coming up next.
- 29:16We'll talk basketball and football with Ben.
- 29:18But right now before we go to break, try the time to give you
- 29:21an opportunity here to try and win $1000.

- 29:37afternoon with Off the Bench with Sean and Lucas Miller and
- 29:40Condon, it's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 29:45I'm Millery Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 29:48Network hour number two off to Chicago.
- 29:50David Kaplan will join us, Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsor
- 29:55Cappy, get the latest on the Cubs, what their plans are,
- 29:58etcetera with cap bears as well. And then Matt Broody, long time
- 30:01golf Digest writer, covered golf for 30 years plus he'll give us
- 30:06a hand with the Open Championship.
- 30:07Ben Hutchins right now, Quad City times, Gannett papers,
- 30:10etcetera, recovers Iowa State, he joins the program talk a
- 30:14little Iowa State. Ben, we're grateful for you
- 30:17coming on and talking cyclones with Trent and I.
- 30:20How are you? Ben Hutchins, I guess what I
- 30:22want to start with you because I reading your Twitter page, it
- 30:24said you survived your first winter storm.
- 30:26Where are you from, Ben? I'm from Oklahoma, a place
- 30:30where, you know, we, we have to guess, well, maybe we will get
- 30:34some snow this year. It's about 5050 down there.
- 30:36And I moved up here and said no, like it's, it's not a matter of
- 30:40if, it's a matter of when. Yeah, no, no doubt about it.
- 30:42Well, glad to have you, glad you're here and glad you're
- 30:44going to talk some clones with us.
- 30:46And TJ met the media yesterday. You know, the more and more I
- 30:50look at his roster, I'm starting to, you know, familiar as
- 30:53everybody is, familiarize yourself with some of the
- 30:56newbies, etcetera. And and obviously plate is
- 30:59getting a lot of attention a couple of the freshmen, but it's
- 31:02the big that they kind of got late in the game.
- 31:04The Blake Buchanan. I'm guessing he's going to fill
- 31:08Chatfield's role, perhaps maybe elevate that role a little bit.
- 31:12Although Chatfield was really good, I thought.
- 31:14But the Virginia transfer, Blake Buchanan and some of T JS
- 31:19expectations around here. They had a relationship.
- 31:22I'm anxious to see where he fits in on this roster and playing
- 31:25time. That comes accordingly here,
- 31:27Ben. Yeah, you're right.
- 31:29That relationship started with Team USA Basketball, TJ said a
- 31:33few years ago when he coached Blake Buchanan, who at the time
- 31:37was getting ready to go to Virginia.
- 31:39And TJ said Blake's awareness, his, you know, mental sharpness,
- 31:44picking up on how things go in the basketball drills is
- 31:47something that stuck out with him.
- 31:49So when Buchanan entered the transfer portal after Virginia
- 31:53lost head coach Tony Bennett, he was kind of natural for TJ and
- 31:57Blake Buchanan to, you know, rekindle their relationship and
- 32:00get together in Iowa. And the relationship that they
- 32:03both had with Bennett came along with that.
- 32:05And in terms of what he can bring this year, I think he's
- 32:08looking at filling a little bit of that Chatfield void.
- 32:11And what I mean by that is the physicality of it because 6 foot
- 32:1610, he's a big, big guy. And he's going to be that lob
- 32:19threat, that rim, you know, guy who who's, you know, rim
- 32:23protecting on defense and don't hit the ball.
- 32:26So definitely the interior, big physical 5 presence is I think
- 32:32where Buchanan is going to show take us.
- 32:34In a little bit deeper into Joshua Jefferson, because I just
- 32:39rose reading the transcript, I wasn't there.
- 32:41I didn't get the tone out of it from TJ.
- 32:43It felt like TJ didn't want to talk a ton about it, that he was
- 32:46kind of little shorter than he normally is with his answers
- 32:49ready to move on, maybe to another topic.
- 32:51Did you get the same sense going through the media availability
- 32:54with TJ that he just didn't want to stay a ton about the
- 32:57Jefferson injury? I did.
- 32:59Get that sense. But my my kind of read on it was
- 33:03not necessarily that, you know, TJ wanted to shy away from it or
- 33:07that he was, you know, concerned about it.
- 33:09So he didn't want to talk about it.
- 33:11My read was that TJ didn't think it was going to be a huge issue
- 33:16moving forward. He did confirm that Jefferson
- 33:20sprained his right wrist, which is never great when you think
- 33:23about, you know, that injury for your leading returning scorer.
- 33:28But also Berger told us that, you know, hey, he's going to be
- 33:31fine. That was in the immediate quote.
- 33:33And also that the cast is coming off a week from today.
- 33:37So he said, why the time Iowa State, you know, resumes the
- 33:41getting ramped back up in the fall, Jefferson will be a full
- 33:44go. So my read on it is that it's
- 33:46not too, too serious. I know Jefferson kind of said
- 33:50that at the Iowa Speedway to Scott Reister when he was asked
- 33:54about it. You know, it happened in
- 33:55practice. TJ said he didn't know exactly
- 33:58when it happened, so Jefferson's such a physical player down low
- 34:02that it probably happened, you know, on a play down there.
- 34:06So my read on it is that it's not too serious and nothing that
- 34:09cyclication should be concerned about long term.
- 34:12I think it's encouraging when he was brought when he was asked
- 34:14about Milan Manchilovic and and you know, watching him play one
- 34:18night, he just looks like all worldly, right, Like good God,
- 34:20this guy's going in the draft and then the next night he he
- 34:23couldn't hit the broadside of a barn.
- 34:25He just so inconsistent and TJS first sentence sentence of his
- 34:30answer. He was asked a bunch of
- 34:31questions about him is now it's about the consistency, which is
- 34:36seemingly you know what what might might be the final hurdle
- 34:40he has to get over in order for him to be considered an upper
- 34:44echelon player in the Big 12 because we think he's got the
- 34:46skills he's got the ability to be that got a lot of game, but
- 34:50the consistency wasn't there and that seemingly is a focus this
- 34:54offseason. Ben.
- 34:55Totally. And that's, I think, you know
- 34:57the thing that all three-point shooters are are constantly
- 34:59striving for and searching for. Milan told us yeah, he's that's
- 35:03one part of his game he's worked on even more is that 3 point
- 35:06shot and a little teaser for cycling fans listening is that
- 35:10in the the summer practices here, apparently Monchilovich is
- 35:14shooting over 50% from 3. So that's pretty consistent and
- 35:18pretty Dang good too. Guys, I think where you look at
- 35:22Momchilovich taking this next step is volume of his
- 35:26three-point shots. I guess that's a way for a
- 35:28three-point shooter to get, you know, more consistent is get a
- 35:31bigger sample size. Last year he averaged 5.7
- 35:35attempts from three per game. That was up from 4.6 his
- 35:39freshman year. This year.
- 35:41Austin Burger said they wanted. To get 789103 point attempts up
- 35:47every game and not just the open ones.
- 35:50They want him, you know, pulling with a hand in his face when
- 35:54he's contested because that does stress an opposing defense.
- 35:57And even if you do miss those lower percentage shots, you're
- 36:01still impacting the game in ways that open up the floor for other
- 36:05scorers, something that we really saw last year in the few
- 36:08weeks that Mom Chilovich was injured.
- 36:10Speaking of freshmen. Brought up, Dom pleaded.
- 36:13He's kind of off on his own. He's more of a veteran guy, an
- 36:15older guy Of the three others, with Torre, with Bateman, with
- 36:20Mitchell. I know TJ talked about all three
- 36:22of those guys. Who do you anticipate is going
- 36:24to be the guy that if you had to handicap it right now, is going
- 36:26to get the most minutes this season?
- 36:29I think it may be. Bateman, I've seen just a a lot
- 36:33about his scoring ability and he comes in naturally, you know, an
- 36:37offensive score. I think that could be, you know,
- 36:40an area that the Cyclones are looking through, a place a
- 36:42little bit where you lose Keyshawn Gilbert and Curtis
- 36:46Jones, you know, guards, your two leading scorers.
- 36:48So I could see kind of just an opening for someone like
- 36:51Bateman, who's a six foot three, you know, 185 LB guard.
- 36:55I could really see a need for that for the Cyclones this year,
- 36:58you know, coming off the bench like maybe Curtis Jones did.
- 37:02If anything, we've seen that ineffective scorer off the bench
- 37:05can be a huge piece for this Cyclone offense, and just ask
- 37:09Curtis Jones how that's working out.
- 37:10He was the. 6th Man of. The year and now doing well with
- 37:14the Nuggets in the summer league.
- 37:15So I don't know, just my feel on it right now is that we could
- 37:17see Bateman out there a little. Bit let's switch to football.
- 37:20Big 12 Media days have come and gone.
- 37:22Obviously. You know, I'm glad you brought
- 37:25up in one of your pieces, one of the many newspapers that
- 37:28publisher stuff, that the main event on the second day was
- 37:32clearly Deion Sanders. But back to day one, listening
- 37:35to to Matt Campbell speak. And then subsequent to that,
- 37:38just the number of coaches that had glowing things to say about
- 37:42Iowa State's head coach. But take away or two from you
- 37:45from listening to players and coaches that went through Big 12
- 37:48media days last week. Yeah, that main event was
- 37:52awesome, guys. Deion Sanders was truly awesome.
- 37:55You know, that that's been an overused word a lot of times,
- 37:58But you know, it was all inspiring to sit up there and
- 38:02just watch him have a command over an entire room.
- 38:06And, you know, it's kind of funny.
- 38:07I likened it to the main event of a UFC fight where everybody
- 38:11kind of sticks around for the last guy to go.
- 38:13Maybe they knew what they were doing, putting Dion Sanders at
- 38:16the end because, you know, you could see all the media kind of
- 38:19gathered around. But there's, you know, in terms
- 38:21of Iowa State storylines to come out of media days.
- 38:24It's always kind of hit or miss when you talk to those people in
- 38:27July. But something I thought really
- 38:29interesting was something Matt Campbell brought up unprompted.
- 38:33We didn't ask him about Joe Resendez, Iowa State's new
- 38:37director of sports medicine for football.
- 38:39But it was something that Campbell brought up.
- 38:42He said, you know, they brought in Joe Resendez, this guy who'd
- 38:45worked with the Sacramento Kings in the past, has worked with the
- 38:48Usli believe the San Antonio Antonio franchise.
- 38:51So he's going to be kind of the new chief, you know, doctor, if
- 38:56you will, for this football team.
- 38:57And think about how important that's going to be with how many
- 39:00injuries they had last year. Max Campbell said, you know,
- 39:04that's a huge win. That's a huge addition for our
- 39:06team is somebody, you know, like Resendez, who's going to be all
- 39:10behind the scenes. So I thought that was really
- 39:12interesting. The the players all seem to like
- 39:13him. He's somebody who has, you know,
- 39:16big ideas about the human body and elevating performance and
- 39:19testing metrics, but it's also in their tape and ankles.
- 39:22So I think maybe that'll be something that we see factors
- 39:26into the season, you know, come week nine, week 10 late in the
- 39:30year. Good stuff.
- 39:31Ben appreciate it. Lee Enterprise Newspapers, Quad
- 39:34City Times, Waterloo Courier, Mason City Globe and Gazette,
- 39:37Sioux City Journal, all markets where they they publish your
- 39:41work and they listen to Trenton Minds on various stations on the
- 39:44Iowa Sports Radio Network. Ben, good to get to know you.
- 39:48We're going to impose on you again throughout the upcoming
- 39:50weeks, months, year. Thanks for jumping on with us,
- 39:53Ben Hutchins. We'll be in touch.
- 39:55Appreciate it. We'll do it soon.
- 39:57Sounds good, yeah. Good to talk to you Ben Hutchins
- 39:58is we talk Iowa State. We'll take time out come back
- 40:01finish our #1 Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 40:06Hi Miller and Condon, welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 40:09Thanks to Ben Hutchins for joining us taking a little look
