- 0:12Hello friends, it is Sean here. It is a new week.
- 0:16It is Monday, it is the 24th of July and I hope that you are
- 0:23doing well. As I look at our Bible reading
- 0:27program, we have now for this 12 months flipped onto the backside
- 0:33of the page. If you want to find it, it's in
- 0:35the show notes and we are officially in the back half of
- 0:40our journey through the next year.
- 0:41How exciting. But we are not in the back half
- 0:45of our journey through Isaiah. We have had two weeks and then
- 0:49we're going to continue for another number of weeks.
- 0:52And then when we get to the middle of Isaiah in September,
- 0:55you and I are going to take a break from Isaiah and we are
- 1:00going to read through the book of Acts to get us back in the
- 1:04land of the church growing after Jesus ministry before we come
- 1:08back to finish Isaiah. So this is going to be a world
- 1:12of Old Testament and New Testament and boy, today is a
- 1:15crackerjack. Today is a chapter of Isaiah
- 1:19that all of you have heard before.
- 1:21This speaks about the hope in the coming Messiah.
- 1:25This is what Jesus referred to and when he told everyone who he
- 1:30was and they were a little bit upset with him.
- 1:33This is God telling his people that even though they are going
- 1:39to do the wrong thing and there will be judgment, that there is
- 1:42hope and that he will redeem them and that through them his
- 1:45covenant will be made true. So join me as we read through
- 1:49this crackerjack of a chapter, Isaiah, Chapter 9.
- 2:04Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go
- 2:08on forever. The land of Zebulon and Naftali
- 2:12will be humbled. But there will be a time in the
- 2:16future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the
- 2:20road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be
- 2:24filled with glory. The people who walk in darkness
- 2:27will see a great light. For those who live in a land of
- 2:31deep darkness, a light will shine.
- 2:35You will enlarge the nation of Israel, and its people will
- 2:38rejoice. They will rejoice before you as
- 2:42people rejoice at the harvest, and like warriors dividing the
- 2:45plunder. For you will break the yoke of
- 2:48their slavery and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders.
- 2:52You will break the oppressors rod, just as you did when you
- 2:56destroyed the army of Midian. The boots of the warrior and the
- 3:00uniforms bloodstained by war, will all be burned.
- 3:05There will be fuel for the fire, for a child is born to us, a son
- 3:11is given to us. The government will rest on his
- 3:15shoulders, and he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty
- 3:20God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
- 3:24His government and its peace will never end.
- 3:28He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his
- 3:32ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the
- 3:37Lord of Heaven's armies will make this happen.
- 3:42The Lord has spoken out against Jacob.
- 3:44His judgment has fallen upon Israel, and the people of Israel
- 3:48and Samaria, who spoke with such pride and arrogance, will soon
- 3:52know it. They said We will replace the
- 3:55broken bricks of our ruins with finished stone, and replant the
- 3:59felled Sycamore trees with Cedars.
- 4:02But the Lord will bring resins enemies against Israel and stir
- 4:07up all their fires. The Syrians from the east and
- 4:10the Philistines from the West will bear their fangs and devour
- 4:14Israel. But even then the Lord's anger
- 4:18will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to
- 4:21strike. For after all this punishment,
- 4:25the people will still not repent.
- 4:28They will not seek the Lord of heaven's armies.
- 4:30Therefore, in a single day the Lord will destroy both the head
- 4:34and the tail, the noble palm branch and the lowly Reed.
- 4:40The leaders of Israel are the head, and the lying prophets are
- 4:43the tail to the leaders of the people have misled them.
- 4:47They have led them down the path of destruction.
- 4:50That is why the Lord takes no pleasure in the young men, and
- 4:53shows no mercy even to the widows and orphans.
- 4:57For they are all wicked hypocrites, and they all speak
- 5:01foolishness. But even then the Lord's anger
- 5:04will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to
- 5:08strike. This wickedness is like a brush
- 5:11fire. It burns not only briars than
- 5:14thorns, but also sets the forests ablaze.
- 5:18It's burning sends up clouds of smoke.
- 5:22The land will be blackened by the fury of the Lord of Heaven's
- 5:25armies. The people will be fuel for the
- 5:28fire, and no one will spare even his own brother.
- 5:32They will attack their neighbor on the right, but will still be
- 5:35hungry. They will devour their neighbor
- 5:38on the left, but will not be satisfied in the end.
- 5:43They will even eat their own children.
- 5:45Manassa will feed on Efraim, Efraim will feed on Manassa, and
- 5:50both will devour Judah. But even then the Lord's anger
- 5:55will not be satisfied. His fist is still poised to
- 5:59strike. Lord, we are pretty simple
- 6:13creatures. When we are angry, we are angry.
- 6:16When we are hopeful, we are hopeful.
- 6:19But here we see that when you are angry at people's
- 6:24stubbornness, still in the midst of that, you love and you inject
- 6:29hope, Thank you that even when Israel is failing, you are busy
- 6:36behind the scenes planning your saving strategy to send Jesus to
- 6:42rescue them and to rescue us. Thank you that at your heart you
- 6:48are always moving toward reconciling us back to you.
- 6:53Even when things are going terribly wrong, you yearn to
- 6:58bring us back into your embrace. So here we are, Jesus, we are in
- 7:03your embrace, and that is where we want to stay.
- 7:07So hold us close. Transform us so that we can live
- 7:12in your embrace, spreading your love to those around us.
- 7:18Thank you. We love you and we worship you,
- 7:21and it's in your name we pray Jesus.
- 7:24Amen.
