- 0:02What we actively perceive and pay attention to with our waking
- 0:05consciousness is a very small portion of the entire pattern of
- 0:10energetic forces we are constantly subjected to and
- 0:15which act upon us unseen and unrecognized.
- 0:20Whether it is physical radiation, vital forces, or
- 0:24mental thought forms, or the spiritual forces of the higher
- 0:28planes of consciousness, there is an energetic impact that
- 0:32impinges upon our being and helps to create and influence
- 0:37the way we respond on the most superficial levels of the
- 0:41external consciousness. The all or nothing phenomenon
- 0:46illustrates just one way that such subliminal action takes
- 0:50place. We do not see the movement of
- 0:53photons impinging on our visual sense until a certain quanta of
- 0:58photons is present to trigger sight.
- 1:01Up until that point the photons are impinging on the sense
- 1:05organ, but it is not triggering our awareness.
- 1:10We know from a tremendous amount of research that various forms
- 1:14of radiation can impact our health, our sense organs, and
- 1:18our brains. But we do not perceive that
- 1:21radiation without the use of measurement tools such as Geiger
- 1:25Counter to tell us that it is there and active.
- 1:32Anyone who has looked at the sun during an eclipse with their
- 1:36unshielded eyes is affected by the radiation that accompanies
- 1:41the sun's visible light, and this can be blinding.
- 1:47We can feel the focus of an individual who is staring at us
- 1:50or fixating their attention on us, even if we cannot actually
- 1:55observe this. How many times do we get the
- 1:58sense that someone is watching? And then when we turn around, we
- 2:03can see that individual vibrations of all forms of
- 2:08emotional and vital energy unseen by us are nevertheless
- 2:12received, even if we do not acknowledge them with our waking
- 2:17consciousness. They are exerting pressure.
- 2:21Mental thought forms can exercise a similar unseen
- 2:25influence. When we enter a zone where
- 2:28intense study or mental work is taking place, we can actually
- 2:33feel the atmosphere, but its effect impacts us whether we
- 2:38consciously acknowledge it or not, Sri Aurobindo observes
- 2:44quote. Our waking state is unaware of
- 2:47its connection with the subliminal being, although it
- 2:50receives from it, but without any knowledge of the place of
- 2:54origin the inspirations, intuitions, ideas, will,
- 2:59suggestions, sense suggestions, urges to action that rise from
- 3:04below or from behind our limited surface existence.
- 3:09Sleep, like trance, opens the gate of the subliminal to us.
- 3:14For in sleep as in trance, we retire behind the veil of the
- 3:19limited waking personality, and it is behind this veil that the
- 3:24subliminal has its existence. But we receive the records of
- 3:28our sleep experience through dream and in dream figures, and
- 3:33not in that condition which might be called an inner waking,
- 3:38and which is the most accessible form of the trance state.
- 3:42Nor through the supernormal clarities of vision and other
- 3:47more luminous and concrete ways of communication developed by
- 3:51the inner subliminal cognition. When it gets into habitual or
- 3:57occasional conscious connection with our waking self.
- 4:01The subliminal with the subconscious as an annex of
- 4:05itself For the subconscious is also part of the behind the veil
- 4:10entity is the seer of inner things and of superphysical
- 4:16experiences. The surface subconscious is only
- 4:20a transcriber. It is for this reason that the
- 4:24Upanishad describes the subliminal being as the dream
- 4:28self, because it is normally in dreams, visions, absorbed states
- 4:34of inner experience that we enter into and are part of its
- 4:39experiences, just as it describes the superconscient as
- 4:44the sleep self, because normally all mental or sensory
- 4:48experiences cease when we enter this superconscience.
- 4:54For in the deeper trance into which the touch of the
- 4:57superconscient plunges our mentality, no record from it or
- 5:01transcript of its contents can normally reach us.
- 5:06It is only by an especial or an unusual development in a
- 5:11supernormal condition or through a brake or rift in our confined
- 5:16normality that we can be on the surface, conscious of the
- 5:20contacts or messages of the Super conscience.
