Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Vincent Mecaveny joins us now to talk about what's going
- 0:03Speaker 1: on in the UK and Europe.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Good morning, Vincent, Good morning.
- 0:07Speaker 1: So Zelensky is and Brussels. He's urging the European Union
- 0:11Speaker 1: leaders to release some of this money, that is this
- 0:15Speaker 1: frozen Russian money to fund Ukraine's military and economic needs.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I understand a lot of it is in Belgium and
- 0:20Speaker 1: they're not hugely keen on releasing it for fear of repercussions.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Where are they are.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Well, This meeting is going on in Brussels with all
- 0:28Speaker 2: the EU leaders and Zelensky, he is saying that the
- 0:31Speaker 2: country will run out of money if they don't get
- 0:33Speaker 2: a fresh injection because they're making a lot of their
- 0:36Speaker 2: own drones and munitions to fight off Russia. Now two
- 0:40Speaker 2: hundred and ten billion euros worth of Russian accets are
- 0:44Speaker 2: currently being held in a Belgium based organization. The European
- 0:49Speaker 2: nations have been saying for years that this money should
- 0:51Speaker 2: be used to fund the war effort of Ukraine. Until now.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Belgium has tried to sort of sort of not block this,
- 0:58Speaker 2: but has been cautious this because they're saying that they're
- 1:02Speaker 2: worried about the repercussions for them, but they're essentially saying, look,
- 1:05Speaker 2: if the whole of the EU is on board with
- 1:07Speaker 2: this and is willing to sort of take the risk
- 1:09Speaker 2: with us, then we'll jump into the unknown and do this.
- 1:12Speaker 2: But there are some in the EU, the likes of
- 1:14Speaker 2: Victor Awband, the leader of Hungary, who is trying to
- 1:17Speaker 2: potentially block this, but Urslvon de Lyon, who is the
- 1:20Speaker 2: sort of European Commission chief, has said we're not leaving
- 1:23Speaker 2: this summer until we've got a solution to funding this.
- 1:26Speaker 2: So there could be some positive news for Ukraine in
- 1:28Speaker 2: the next few hours after what has been a really
- 1:30Speaker 2: difficult few months with the White House of drifting back
- 1:35Speaker 2: into the more Russian perspective.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Vincent's schools in England are trying to prevent the radicalization
- 1:42Speaker 1: of young men and so teachers are now going to
- 1:45Speaker 1: be given training to spot and tackle misogyny in the classroom.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah, this is part of strategy to try to stop this,
- 1:52Speaker 2: and particularly with the links to extreme pornography. So pornography
- 1:56Speaker 2: here in the UK online has been put behind an
- 1:59Speaker 2: age barrier. Basically you've seen a massive drop in young
- 2:02Speaker 2: people being able to access it, so you have to
- 2:04Speaker 2: have a valid ID showing that you're over eighteen. But
- 2:08Speaker 2: another part of this has been an announcement today millions
- 2:10Speaker 2: of pounds being spent to train teachers to spot the
- 2:13Speaker 2: signs of misogyny in the classroom, particularly from the influence
- 2:16Speaker 2: of the likes of Andrew Tait, and to try to
- 2:19Speaker 2: course correct the behavior at a young age, but also
- 2:22Speaker 2: if it's got more severe, special courses that young men
- 2:25Speaker 2: can in particular can be sent on to try to
- 2:28Speaker 2: sort of deradicalize them from these misogynist, extreme misogynist views.
- 2:32Speaker 2: And this is part of a joined up strategy that
- 2:34Speaker 2: the government's pursuing. This is a landmark strategy they're saying,
- 2:39Speaker 2: eighteen months in the making since they came into government,
- 2:41Speaker 2: which looks across department's education, health, other departments as well
- 2:46Speaker 2: business to try to tackle violence against women. Two women
- 2:50Speaker 2: a week are killed here in the UK because of
- 2:53Speaker 2: domestic violence and this is something that the Prime Minister
- 2:56Speaker 2: in the government here want to make their sort of
- 2:59Speaker 2: landmark piece of legislation this year.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Will be were very keen to see how that goes. Bencent,
- 3:04Speaker 1: thank you so much for your time this morning. Have
- 3:06Speaker 1: a Lovely Christmas.
