- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn German with Fexingo? Luna: Yeah! I've been practicing the numbers from last episode. Zwanzig, dreißig, vierzig... I've got them. Lucas: That's awesome. Today we're going to learn something you use every day: the days of the week. Wochentage. Luna: Ohh, like Monday, Tuesday? I need those for planning my week. Lucas: Exactly. Let's start with Monday. In German, Monday is Montag. Luna: Montag. Lucas: Yep. Montag. Then Tuesday is Dienstag. Luna: Dienstag. That sounds like 'deens-tahg'. Lucas: Good job. Wednesday is Mittwoch — literally 'mid-week'. Luna: Mittwoch. That one's a bit tricky. Mittwoch. Lucas: You got it. Thursday is Donnerstag. Donner means thunder, so 'thunder day'. Luna: Donnerstag. Like 'donner' — thunder. That helps me remember. Lucas: Friday is Freitag. Fröhlich means happy, so 'happy day' for the weekend. Luna: Freitag. I can remember that. And Saturday? Lucas: Saturday is Samstag. In some regions they say Sonnabend, but Samstag is common. Luna: Samstag. And Sunday? Lucas: Sunday is Sonntag — sun day. Sonne means sun. Luna: Sonntag. That's like 'sun-tahg'. Easy. So Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag, Sonntag. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's use them in a sentence. Say 'Today is Monday.' Heute ist Montag. Luna: Heute ist Montag. Lucas: Great. So if today is Monday, you say Heute ist Montag. If tomorrow is Tuesday: Morgen ist Dienstag. Luna: Morgen ist Dienstag. Lucas: And yesterday was Sunday: Gestern war Sonntag. Luna: Gestern war Sonntag. So war is 'was'? Lucas: Exactly. You're catching on. Let's do a quick practice. I'll say a day in English, you say it in German. Monday? Luna: Montag. Lucas: Thursday? Luna: Donnerstag. Lucas: Sunday? Luna: Sonntag. Lucas: Awesome. You're a natural. Now let's put them in a mini conversation. Imagine you're planning a meeting. You could say: 'The meeting is on Monday.' Das Treffen ist am Montag. Luna: Das Treffen ist am Montag. Lucas: Yes. And 'am' means 'on' for days. So 'am Montag', 'am Dienstag', etc. Luna: Got it. So if I want to say 'I have an appointment on Wednesday', it's Ich habe einen Termin am Mittwoch. Lucas: Perfect. You're using the new words already. Luna: Hey Lucas, can I ask something? How do you remember Mittwoch? It doesn't sound like Wednesday at all. Lucas: Sure. Mittwoch literally means 'middle of the week'. So I think of it as 'mid-week'. That helps. Luna: Ahh, that makes sense. Mittwoch is the middle. I'll remember that. Lucas: Let's do one more round. Repeat after me: Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag, Sonntag. Luna: Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag, Sonntag. Lucas: Beautiful. Now, if you can, practice by saying what day it is today in German. Heute ist... Luna: Heute ist... well, I don't know what day it is in the podcast world, but I'll say Heute ist Montag. Lucas: Heute ist Montag. Perfect. You've got the days of the week down. Luna: I feel like I can actually plan my German week now. Lucas: And speaking of planning, if you find these episodes useful and want to keep them ad-free and free for everyone, you can support us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it really helps us keep making these conversations. Every bit goes right back into the show. Lucas: So if today's episode was worth a coffee to you, that's the link. Thanks for listening. Luna: Alright, back to the days. Let's try a sentence with Samstag. 'I work on Saturday.' Ich arbeite am Samstag. Lucas: Ich arbeite am Samstag. Yes. And 'on Sunday I relax' — Am Sonntag entspanne ich mich. Luna: Am Sonntag entspanne ich mich. That's a good one. So am + day + verb. Lucas: Exactly. You've got the structure. Let's do a quick recap. Say the days in order one more time. Luna: Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag, Sonntag. Lucas: Fantastic. And remember, all days are masculine: der Montag, der Dienstag, etc. Luna: Der Montag, der Dienstag. Good to know. I'll practice by saying what I do each day. Lucas: That's a great idea. You can say 'Am Montag lerne ich Deutsch.' On Monday I learn German. Luna: Am Montag lerne ich Deutsch. That's true! And am Samstag schlafe ich lange. Lucas: On Saturday I sleep in. Perfect. You're using the words naturally now. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. This was really helpful. I feel like I can talk about my week. Lucas: You're welcome. That's all for today's episode. Practice these days, and next time we'll build on them. Bis zum nächsten Mal! Luna: Bis zum nächsten Mal! Auf Wiedersehen!
