- 0:00Okay, Edwin, so in the last few episodes we've talked a lot about data-driven
- 0:03HR, but today feels like we're just-diving straight into the storm.
- 0:07AI, actually changing how recruiters do their jobs.
- 0:10I mean... when I first heard about AI-powered screening,
- 0:13I kinda rolled my eyes.
- 0:15Thought, sure-another fancy A T S,
- 0:17right?
- 0:17That's fair.
- 0:19A lot of folks think that.
- 0:21But real AI hiring tools?
- 0:23Whole different beast.
- 0:25Traditional ATS systems mostly just move applications around-they store
- 0:29documents, follow steps, flag some keywords.
- 0:33But these new platforms, they're analyzing patterns.
- 0:36Past high performers, behavioral markers,
- 0:39benchmarks across industries.
- 0:41They're not just sorting-they're learning.
- 0:44Surfacing people you might've never seen,
- 0:46especially those who don't look "perfect" on paper but actually... they've
- 0:51got the raw traits to thrive.
- 0:51Yeah-and it's kinda spooky how good they
- 0:55are.
- 0:56First time my HR team used one,
- 0:58it was for this mid-level marketing role.
- 1:00Normally, I'd be buried under a mountain of CVs for,
- 1:04like, a week.
- 1:05But this time?
- 1:06We had a shortlist by the next morning.
- 1:08And what blew my mind-two of the top candidates had applied before... and
- 1:13totally fell through the cracks.
- 1:14The AI flagged them.
- 1:16I was like-wait, what?
- 1:17How did we miss them the first time?
- 1:17That right there is the promise.
- 1:21AI's not just a speed play-it's a clarity play.
- 1:25You cut through all that early-stage noise,
- 1:28the repetition, the biases, the fatigue.
- 1:31And especially in high-volume hiring?
- 1:33The benefits stack up-faster time-to-fill,
- 1:36lower costs, smoother candidate experiences.
- 1:39Communication gets faster.
- 1:41Feedback loops tighten.
- 1:43And that alone builds trust.
- 1:43Totally.
- 1:46Like-our applicants actually got status updates,
- 1:49like, within hours.
- 1:50It felt more respectful.
- 1:51But here's what I kept wondering... If AI's scanning performance data and
- 1:56spitting out "best fits"-aren't we just... blindly trusting the math?
- 2:00Like, what if it misses something important?
- 2:00That's the right question.
- 2:05AI can absolutely reduce certain biases-like assumptions based on names,
- 2:10gaps, degrees.
- 2:11But if the data underneath is flawed,
- 2:13or the success model is skewed from the start?
- 2:16You're just making faster mistakes.
- 2:18It's like giving bad directions in a self-driving car-it still ends up
- 2:23in the wrong place, just quicker.
- 2:23Right-if your "top performer" data all
- 2:28comes from a super narrow slice of your team,
- 2:30the model just keeps feeding you...
- 2:32clones.
- 2:33Which is exactly what we touched on back in Episode 7.
- 2:36If you don't question the source of your data-you're not doing real strategy.
- 2:40You're just automating yesterday's mistakes.
- 2:40Exactly.
- 2:43And that's where behavioral science comes in.
- 2:46AI can match the numbers-job title,
- 2:49experience, hard skills.
- 2:51But it can't feel how someone communicates,
- 2:55adapts, leads.
- 2:56That's still human territory.
- 2:58Tools like OAD help you see the underlying behavioral DNA.
- 3:03I've seen AI rank someone low,
- 3:06but when we actually spoke with them-structured interview,
- 3:09behavioral insight-they were a total standout.
- 3:12The company took the risk.
- 3:13And it paid off.
- 3:13We had a similar moment.
- 3:17The resume was spotless-like, keyword-perfect.
- 3:20But the OAD flagged a big mismatch in communication style with the hiring
- 3:25manager.
- 3:25We trusted it.
- 3:26Didn't hire.
- 3:27And a month later, the manager said,
- 3:29"Thank god we waited." That tool saved us from a costly misfire.
- 3:29That's
- 3:35the key: use AI for what it's great at-scale,
- 3:39sorting, speed.
- 3:40But don't take your hands off the wheel.
- 3:43Layer in interviews, behavioral insights,
- 3:46real conversations.
- 3:47That's where decisions get better.
- 3:49That's where equity happens.
- 3:49It's like-the AI sets the table.
- 3:54But you still need humans to cook the meal.
- 3:57So, Edwin, for a company trying to build this smart stack-what's the
- 4:01actual playbook?
- 4:02Like, where do they start, and what are the biggest traps?
- 4:02First rule:
- 4:06your inputs matter more than the algorithm.
- 4:08If your data's messy-vague job profiles,
- 4:11inconsistent resume formats, undefined success metrics-you'll get noise,
- 4:17not insight.
- 4:18Clarify what success looks like.
- 4:21Clean up your systems.
- 4:22That's the foundation.
- 4:23Then the tech becomes powerful.
- 4:23Yeah,
- 4:27and it's not just about plugging in the AI-it's about connection.
- 4:30If your ATS doesn't sync with your interview tools or your behavioral
- 4:34assessments?
- 4:34You just end up with scattered signals and confused candidates.
- 4:38It's like-each part might work,
- 4:40but the whole feels broken.
- 4:40Absolutely.
- 4:43And don't forget transparency.
- 4:45Candidates deserve to know where AI is used,
- 4:48what's automated, and where human judgment kicks in.
- 4:51The smartest companies?
- 4:53They offer opt-outs for video interviews,
- 4:55explain their process, run audits for fairness.
- 4:59I had a client last month-mid-sized,
- 5:01fast-growing-they did exactly that.
- 5:04Candidate satisfaction went up.
- 5:06Complaints about the process feeling "robotic"?
- 5:09Way down.
- 5:09Can we, like, put that on a billboard?
- 5:12There is no perfect hire.
- 5:14No magic formula.
- 5:15Just... thoughtful systems and real conversations.
- 5:19And I hate when vendors sell AI as a shortcut to perfection.
- 5:22That's just... not real life.
- 5:22You're right.
- 5:25AI is powerful, but it's not omniscient.
- 5:28It's a tool.
- 5:29And when you combine it with behavioral science-like OAD-or any robust
- 5:33framework that helps decode how people actually work,
- 5:36then you get something lasting.
- 5:38You get smarter hires, better teams,
- 5:40and fewer regrets.
- 5:40I love that-and honestly,
- 5:44I think that's what makes this field so exciting right now.
- 5:47We get the power of automation,
- 5:49but also this renewed focus on what makes people successful,
- 5:52over the long haul.
- 5:53So, big thanks for talking through all this with me,
- 5:56Edwin.
- 5:57And for everyone listening, if you want to see how you can layer behavioral
- 6:01science into your recruitment stack,
- 6:02you can always check out a free trial at OAD.
- 6:02ai.
- 6:06We'll be digging deeper into what future-ready hiring looks like in our
- 6:09next episode, so be sure to tune in.
- 6:09Thanks,
- 6:13Claire.
- 6:13Great questions as always-and thanks everyone for joining us on The Science
- 6:17of Leading.
- 6:18Until next time, take care.
- 6:18Bye,
- 6:21Edwin!
- 6:21Bye everyone!
