- @misfitcoach: Good morning, Misfit. You are tuning in to another episode of the Misfit Podcast. On today's episode, we welcome very special guest, Misfit OG, and back-to-back semifinals athlete, Lindsay Hoffman. These conversations are so important, okay? Ten years in the sport, getting to the point where now you're a back-to-back semifinals athlete. Are the kinds of stories that we want to dig into, the kinds of You know, we want to know about her mentality and what she went through, the ups and the downs, what kind of got her over the hump and what her experiences have been like. before we get into that, I'm gonna do a little solo podcasting here. Whenever I see the same kind of common faults within the programming, especially on the remote coaching side, I like to address them and hope that we can kind of cast a wider net. so the two things we're gonna be talking about today are what I refer to as making yourself shorter on the rower and overextension in the back squat. So with the rowing, I know that this is an obvious always the easiest thing to do to explain these things on the podcast versus having a visual aid, but we actually have some really good videos about this on our YouTube. the the one that comes to mind I think is like row like a pro. A row like the elite, and really covers this. So if you need a visual aid, go to the Misfit Athletics YouTube and check that out. and essentially the fault that we're seeing the most of is athlete returns to the catch, sometimes in a good position, sometimes not great. But the very first thing that they do to initiate the drive phase is they lean backwards. and that's why I refer to it as making yourself shorter. When you have An upright torso, kind of lean forward torso. your arms are nice and long, and you are a taller athlete, or maybe you're shorter, and you need to try and get as much of a mechanical advantage as you can. The only thing that you can do to create force and create power is to drive through your legs. and all we're doing with that lean back after we drive with the legs, after, after, after, most important part here, is continue to generate force, pass it along, get a little bit more range of motion. So that's the very last thing that you should be doing. the really egregious version of this is we get back to the catch and then as we go to lean back, we slide our butt forward first. that is going to make it extremely challenging to have any leverage over the handle. one way I also like to teach it in person, if we got some coaches out there, is thinking about it from the perspective of the deadlift. We're in that nice nice position like the power lifting deadlift so similar to being at the catch in the rower and think about how much power and leverage you would have in the deadlift if you were to drop your butt and lean backwards before you tried to stand up. We got no power there, right? so we want to make sure that we are thinking about it as a leg drive versus a pull. and at Misfit Athletics right now we are doing a ton of you know long slow rowing at this point in the year. And that is the best way to practice and nail this down. If we got roughly 20 strokes per minute, and we're extending that out to 45 to 90 minutes. That's a lot of practice that you can have with really low stakes, both from an intensity standpoint and just a quote unquote scoring standpoint. so we're seeing a lot of that. Want to make sure that we're correcting there. The other thing that we're seeing on a pretty regular basis right now is like really overextended positions, especially on the way down in the back squat. So what I mean by that is those cues where we want to have that like really big chest and we have the, you know, sort of anterior tilt to the pelvis so that we have a big lumbar curve. And honestly, there are certain organizations and certifications you can get where they talk about that. but that's not a very strong position for us to be in. we want to be stacked. If you go find, go find you know, hook grip, slow-mo, clean. Snatch could work too, but clean will be a little bit more clear. Go look that up on YouTube and pause when they're in the bottom. Look at that position that they're in. Nice neutral pelvis goes up into the spine, nice tight upper back. That position, that nice straight position, whether there's an angle to it or not, it's gonna depend on your body specifically, but really important to think about it from that perspective. so how do we fix this? the Sebastian Oreb, I believe his name is, Australian strength coach, has a really great video that I can share with you guys in Telegram. But the funny part is the best cue that I've ever heard for this is also fairly crude. so it fits in with Misfit Athletics a little bit. he says piss up a wall. so essentially he's asking his athletes to try and do a posterior tilt to their pelvis, which isn't gonna happen. but that's the kind of overcueing that can teach you what it feels like to pull down into that braced position with your pelvis connected to what you're trying to do. So wanna make sure that that happens. this is really important for the butt wink. So if you're the type of athlete that really is in that overextended position and you wonder why the butt wink is there, it's because your body's fighting to stay in that position. And when it can't anymore, that tuck under is what happens. We really don't want that. That's going to create sheer force in the lumbar spine. That's going to be when people have the issues with the low back. we have the accessory article good to go. You can go to misfitathletics.com, click on blog if you guys are looking for video references for the accessory work. That's in there. and then before we get to the interview, one really cool thing we're doing right now is we are previewing a future offering called Comp Plus. So we are doing a weekly coaching call Fridays, 9 30 a.m. mountain time. so that would be 8 30 Pacific, 1130 East Coast time. we're doing a call that can go up to an hour where I'm going through the programming kind of on a day-by-day basis and giving you my thoughts. Then maybe we'll do some group video review. and we open it up for QA to make sure that people feel like they're really set up for their following week of programming there. and that will eventually be offered as a program offering where you're gonna have access to GPP, Hatchet, Masters Pro, all of the programs, but you also get access to the weekly call. And then we are gonna have more video review. attached to that as well so people feel like they can really improve. So we're looking to improve our rowing on our back squat quite a bit right now. Those are common faults that we are seeing. The accessory article is live now misfitathletics.com. Click on the blog tab. It should be the first one that you see there. and I would love to see more people at the call on Friday. If you can't make it we are going to have the recordings and send those out. The recordings and the call will remain free until we charge for it. at which point you will only receive the recording link if you are subscribed. Without further ado, Lindsay Hoffman. Lindsey Hoffman, welcome to the podcast. How we doing? Lindsey Hoffmann: Good, good, how are you guys? Wonderful. @paige_semenza: Wonderful. @misfitcoach: Fantastic. Fantastic. so as always, if people listen to the podcast, you know I want to know people's origin stories. I want to know how they got started in CrossFit. I know that you've been doing this for a while. Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm. @misfitcoach: you've been coaching for a while, you've been following Misfit Athletics programming for a while. but I wanted to start with maybe a little bit of an icebreaker of like you're coming off your second consecutive individual semifinal. what has training looked like over the summer into phase zero, into phase one? How do you manage making sure that you're not just blasting yourself twelve months out of the year? Lindsey Hoffmann: So if you know me, if you follow me, if you've met me, probably had any interaction with me, I love summertime. Like summer, it's hot as hell in Florida, but it's my jam. It's like just great. You know, you live in Florida, you're on the water, it summer's the best. So having semi finals be in like the May June time and then lead right into summer is like @misfitcoach: Mm. Lindsey Hoffmann: I couldn't ask for better. That's like the perfect thank you, CrossFit Gods, for doing it that way. because over the summer is obviously the time when I get to like cherry pick, pick and choose @misfitcoach: Mm-hmm. Lindsey Hoffmann: what I want to do based off of the blog and or like mixed in with what we have programmed at the gym. So I run Blackfin CrossFit here in like Jacksonville, Florida. I say like Jacksonville, it's a little south of Jacksonville, but I will kind of pick and choose based off of what aligns on the blog with like kind of what I want to do in class too. But also knowing me, like I know that strengths, strengths are always my weakest or lowest placings throughout the years on leaderboards or in person competitions. So I always and I enjoy. I always enjoy lifting and I love getting stronger. And I love to see, you know, like we were talking the progress through the years. So Even though it is kind of like the off season now for sure, I prioritize the strengths. So that's kind of a bonus for me because some people like probably really wish that they could do that throughout their off season. @paige_semenza: That is true. Lindsey Hoffmann: But like doing the Texas method over the summer, I always sucker a couple of people into doing that with me at the gym too. @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: Like, my god, you know, it's brutal. But As the weeks go, people start to see me doing it. And I'm like, hey, you're two weeks behind, but go ahead and hop in this Monday. Like you're gonna go ahead and finish it out with me at least. So people know if they stay after class and I'm starting my session, strap in because I'm gonna ask you if you want to work out. you know, so doing that through the summer, have more people kind of hop in with me because I do train alone most of the time. @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: I'll ask more people to hop in. Like I said, picking and choosing pieces that I want to do, still prior prioritizing my strengths, like the lifts, strength work, I should say. And then really over the summer too, taking time outside of the gym to do @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: other things, being being active still, but not spending so much time. Like this has to be done all throughout the day, you know. @misfitcoach: Do you get the itch? Do you get like pulled back in or is it more like I have a date and I know that at this point I need to get back into like the full competitive training? Lindsey Hoffmann: So this might be a bad answer, but usually around @misfitcoach: There's no bad answers. Lindsey Hoffmann: Christmas time, we do a vacation, usually in December with family and friends. And it I'm never not, I'm never completely like taking a whole month off. Like I'm still in the gym and working out and stuff. So I'm never like @misfitcoach: Yep. Lindsey Hoffmann: off, off, off, except like maybe one week after actual semifinals. But December we'll do our vacation, and then from then I'll start to. You know, I'll start to be more strict and follow blog more precisely, especially with the things I really, really need to do. this year is a little not really, it's a little different. I'm doing beach brawl in like two weeks. I'm gonna do @misfitcoach: Okay. Lindsey Hoffmann: the elite individual beach brawl. And I decided to do that because for the past two years, the only competition I've done is semis. And I I almost feel like I'm doing myself a disservice for not getting more experience with individual competing. Cause like prior years I've done a lot of team competing, which is great and it's super fun. But you know, I'm making it to semifinals. Hopefully I make it again. And I do feel like I need a little bit more experience just with the kind of going it alone. You know what I mean? Like the warmup, the in between, the headspace, like all of that stuff. So I'm like, let me do beach ball. It's in Florida. It's on the beach, like right up my alley. It's gonna be fun no matter what. So that is coming up in a couple weeks. So I haven't been like super, super strict, but I've definitely been like on it this month for sure. August and September more to be ready for that. @misfitcoach: So you're clearly Miss Fedogi because you keep saying blog. that's how we know. That's Lindsey Hoffmann: yeah. @misfitcoach: one that's one place where it's like I salute @paige_semenza: Yep. @misfitcoach: you. No, you didn't. No, whoa. I would have had to pause like just Lindsey Hoffmann: Did I say cycle, not phase? Didn't we use @paige_semenza: Yeah @misfitcoach: end end podcast. Lindsey Hoffmann: And @misfitcoach: so how Like give us a little bit of your origin story. How'd you get into CrossFit? and then being a Misfit OG, like how did you get into following Misfit Athletics? When did you start doing that? Lindsey Hoffmann: Okay, so I have a timeline. I started @misfitcoach: Yes. Amazing. Lindsey Hoffmann: it's just it's quick because I'm like, what year was this? when I was in college, I went to UNF and I was working part-time at a chiropractic office as an assistant, and we would have regular, you know, regular members come in every week. So shout out to Larry and Lindsay. They were they still are members at the gym, but they also had their regular chiropractic appointments. They started talking to me because we, you know, you start to talk to the patients and they were like, hey, we do bring a friend Thursdays at Blackfin, you should come in. And at the time I'm like working out at Planet Fitness on my lunch break, seriously, because it was like right across the street from the office. So I go in to a couple bring a friend days and obviously love it. So I sign up, I do the whole onboarding. Back then, this was 2015, this was December of 2015. I did a whole month long of onboarding. That's how we did it. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 7 30 at night, whole month. And if you don't make all of them, you don't get to join the gym. So yeah, that @misfitcoach: Great for members, not great for business. Yes. Lindsey Hoffmann: was Mark. Mark's my father-in-law, so he owns the gym. that's how we started. And Truly, like for people like me, it was great because you learned everything. You kind of were @misfitcoach: yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: in like a class field setting already with your on-ramp group. So that's just how it was back then. obviously we've come a long way from from there. But I started like January of twenty sixteen, then like just doing two to three classes a week, probably. And then so as that year went on, there was a group of Should I say kids? my God. Like kids my age at the time. I was probably like 18 to 20. yeah, I know. @paige_semenza: It's a baby. Lindsey Hoffmann: Gosh. I was young. So there's a group of us around the same age, college age. There we go. We'll say college age. And they were working out like before class. Like I'd get there and they're working out, and then they say after, maybe sometimes and work out. And so finally I'm like, What are y'all doing? Like, I wanna join. I wanna do some extra. Like, I've already got Bitten by the CrossFit bug enough to come to class, like multiple times a week, what are you guys doing? And Tristan, my husband now is was a part of that friend group. And he's like, We're doing Misfit Athletics. It's like a program we do for all of our extra stuff outside of class. And also also at the time, Blackfin, we were Misfit affiliate. We were doing that programming at the time. So they would do that, and then they would do some of the extra stuff. And so I started hopping in with them. Which then, of course, you know, you have this great group of friends, you have extra programming that you're starting to see like results come from. You know, back then I'm like, my gosh, I'm getting more toned or whatever. But, you know, over time you see like I'm getting fitter, stronger, faster. So like let's keep it going. So that just kind of got me going throughout the years on misfit. So then I was like, Well, I want this for myself too when I'm at the gym. on my time alone, so I bought into it and followed that. And I've always followed Misfit as my extra programming or my soul programming. But yeah, I've been I've been on hatchet, @misfitcoach: When Lindsey Hoffmann: I think. Go ahead. @misfitcoach: When did the competitive bug come into play here from like or was it there the whole time or was the extra work more just extra work 'cause I like it? Lindsey Hoffmann: At first the extra work was extra work because I like it. And @misfitcoach: Mm. Lindsey Hoffmann: then Tristan went on a team. I can tell you when. I think Tristan went on a team to Wadapalooza. So I tagged along, like with his mom just to watch. And I'm like, my God, freaking look at these people. Like, I wanna do this. This is so cool. Which Wadapalooza, like, I haven't been recently since they've kind of moved out of just Miami, but it was it was so cool to be at. I mean Terribly run, sorry, but cool to be at. So the next year I think was when I was like, let me try to make let me try to qualify. So I don't think I tried to qualify on a team, I we didn't qualify, but then the next two years I wrote this down. I qualified for Wadapalooza in twenty twenty two and twenty three in the Rx division. So @misfitcoach: Okay. Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: that's kind of when I got more competitive. @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: But like with that being said too, my first open was in twenty seventeen. So @misfitcoach: I think @paige_semenza: In RX with water polusa is also very challenging like with the amount Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm-hmm. @paige_semenza: of people that try to qualify Lindsey Hoffmann: For sure. Yeah. @misfitcoach: Yeah. I think that path too is so important. So many people see the sport first. They don't see the affiliate side first. They don't have that experience of having hands-on coaching, understanding the community element, understanding the competitive element more from a day-to-day, like I'm gonna whoop Billy Joe's ass today because he's no good at toast to bar. Like things of Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm-hmm. @misfitcoach: that nature, that path leads people, I think, to a place where our programming is actually gonna help them, right? There's there's someone somewhere right now that is just starting. To be at the top of the affiliate leaderboard every day, doesn't know anything about the CrossFit games, and someone is gonna say, Do you wanna stay with me and do rowing intervals, or you wanna stay with me and back squat? And when that person starts to add volume incrementally, they go blasting by everybody who's like, I'm a competitor, snap the fingers, I'm ready to go, and adding all that volume. So it's not a coincidence that we keep doing these interviews and they start. from this place because Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm. @misfitcoach: I'm just obsessed with like when I have a new athlete that's that's maybe frustrated with where they're at. I'm just like, okay, I ha now have, you know, dozens of misfit athletes who were whatever, eighteen thousandth in the world at this point, and then are either high level quarterfinals, semifinals, high level semifinals, CrossFit games. And it's like, let's go look, like that's why I like before I do these interviews to go look at the page and see that. Like you're heading into your 11th open. Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm. @misfitcoach: this coming year, which is which is so cool. And that incremental process I think is so important. And I think it gets lost when someone thinks that they're just gonna throw themselves kind of into the sport. so the follow-up there would be you qualified for your first semifinal in 2025, correct? Syndicate crown. Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm-hmm. Yeah. @misfitcoach: That is three full years after the the Wadapalooza individual qualification. did you feel like that was like one foot in front of the other kind of growth to get to that point? Or do you feel like there was like a catalyst for it? What got you from really good quarterfinals levels athlete to back to back semifinals? Lindsey Hoffmann: a lot of things but shout out to Sherb because I did remote coaching. I actually worked with him from twenty twenty two to twenty twenty four so for two years. we're buddies man. no it was great honestly I know yeah @paige_semenza: hard not to be with him. It's just his personality with coaching. Lindsey Hoffmann: true yeah man the catalyst yeah remote coaching for sure that is I wouldn't sit my ass on a rower for that long, I'll tell you that. I mean unless I had someone making me and so like @misfitcoach: That's a timely comment for the misfits listening right now. @paige_semenza: Very much. Lindsey Hoffmann: Truly, I mean that like you have you have your specific programming. And like I want to say that the programming, at least for me, is the easy part. Like it's not you don't have to force me to go and like do what's on the list. I if you tell me what to do, I'll do it. That's one of the reasons why I had started, you know, following myself from the beginning. Cause like I just want to know what to do. Just tell me. So that's super nice. And then like having your specific skills that you need to dial in on and hey, here's these paces. Give me this. or based off of this test, here's what you should hold. What do you think, you know, like the questions you ask it so personal. So having somebody to answer to, which is funny, because like also being a nutrition coach, people want to sign up for nutrition because they have someone to answer to. But that's like one of the biggest things. You want to hold these paces because you got someone to make proud kind of thing. Like look, Look what I did. I held my paces on the rower or made these percentages. So that definitely, definitely helped. I think I'd God, I I I like rowing now. We can say that. I'm actually for being a smaller athlete, like being on the rower and I kinda hold my own there. Echo bike, not there yet, but maybe we'll get there. and then also I don't know, you guys probably know that like Misfit Podcast is a therapy session for some of us because I think so much about the zoom out perspective. And I don't even that was probably like a year or more ago when you talked about looking at where you are now, but zooming out because I mean, look at how far probably everybody has come since the first time they've started like their first class or whatever it was. If you have goals and you've progressively work towards those goals like you're getting better unless unless you're you've quit or something in between there but keeping the zoom out perspective like alive as I've gone through the years is super important like I think about that all the time and then just enjoying it. So I've had a really you want me to keep going I can keep going I've had a really @misfitcoach: Yes. Lindsey Hoffmann: good Good, not even good, blessed is the correct term here. transition with the years that I was remote coaching, I was teaching full time. I was a PE teacher for K through six for three years and that was insane. Honestly, that was insane. So I would actually get up this is before me and Tristan had a house. So we actually lived while we were building the house, lived in a camper. on our land. So I would get up in the morning, go drive to Blackfin, do class or extra stuff in the next room over. So that would be my first session of the day. I'd leave from the gym and I would go to teach from like seven to three. And then I would go back to the gym from work and then do my next session of the day, which was probably the longer one, probably two ish hours long, you know, all in all. And then I would come home. And cook dinner and maybe try to stretch and then do it again the next day. But in twenty twenty three, I got to run the gym. So now I'm running the gym. And that in itself, like having the time throughout the day to schedule classes and personal training and on rants and stuff, I I can like I'm already at the gym. It's so great. So great. @misfitcoach: Let's rewind a little bit. Tell me about your coaching. Like how did you get started in coaching? What was that like? And then maybe any sort of connections you feel where like does your coaching help you as an athlete? Lindsey Hoffmann: Okay, so I started coaching pr I mean probably 2020-ish, just as help for the gym. So me and Tristan at the time were dating, and Mark, my father-in-law, was like, hey, if you ever want to get your L1, like we could always use an extra coach at the gym. you obviously love this. So I was like, Absolutely, I would love to. so I actually got my nutrition certification and was trying to also get my L1. Not trying, I was actively going to get my L one. So I did that and then like I was kinda like a substitute. Like if you ever needed, if they were out of town or needed an extra coach at a different class, I would hop in as as I could around my work or whatever schedule. So then I just I love coaching. I love obviously seeing people become fitter and better. So as the years went on, I definitely didn't want to stay in teaching PE. I I knew from the first year. I was like, this is not it. This is not gonna be my end all be all. Like whether I'm coaching or not, I can't stay doing this. So I got my L2 and had just kind of put more eggs in the coaching basket, I guess you could say, and maybe also put a big bug in Mark's ear. Like, if you ever are ready, let me know. So just coaching more and then proving that I I know what I'm doing and I I really do think I can grow the gym and help people. so then in twenty twenty three he was kind of ready to turn that over and I am privileged and like I said, blessed enough honestly to have this opportunity to coach full time. But yes, it definitely helps as an athlete too, because sometimes I'll catch myself like saying something to someone and I'm like, damn, I kind of needed that too. Like good for me. Good thing I said that. Like I needed that @misfitcoach: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Lindsey Hoffmann: too. you know, just breaking down for today as an example. We had power snatch plus overhead squat work. and so like training people to do certain things, land where you want to be. Like, I'm like, I need this. I need this carries over to me so much too. And, you know, all the conversations in between that you have with people are like, you need that. @misfitcoach: Yeah, the the the thing that's was really weird for me is I felt like I was an athlete first, then I was a coach and I worked so hard as an athlete to try and get better and be better at the sport of CrossFit. And it wasn't until I did my ten thousand hours of coaching that like I didn't even need to do, you know, I could go back to muscle ups. after weeks or months off and I would be better at them because I had been so drilled in on seeing all of these different variations of the same movement pattern. And this is how you fix this fault and this is how you fix this one. and I just I've I found from like a visual visual I can say it. Visualization standpoint. I need another gorilla mind. that it really helps me figure out how to move my body. and it's just kind of a unique thing to not actually do the thing, but to talk about it and watch it and help people with it, that there's this level of like osmosis, like the book under the pillow situation where you can then go execute on that yourself. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. And I think too, like you were saying, a big thing is there's so many different variations of like the way people move or the way that they should be scaling X movement. @misfitcoach: Mm-hmm. Lindsey Hoffmann: Like there's so many different layers and things that you can teach to build to that higher level thing. And then like you're coaching, so odds are you're demoing it and you're showing them. So like I'm also getting this work in without even really like knowing that was going to be part of my day. But thank you to whoever for reminding me that I have all of these different like drills or whatever in my back pocket that are also going to help me become or stay, you know, drilled into what what level I'm at. So yeah, it's definitely good to coach. @paige_semenza: I think it helps you build the culture there too, right? Like you're coaching, you're practicing what you're preaching. It's not just I talk about it, I'm also like, I be about it, right? So I Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm-hmm. @paige_semenza: think building that culture at your gym, and obviously I've never been to your affiliate, but I can imagine that there's a culture where it's mechanics, consistency, intensity, movement quality is at a premium just like it is with Misfit. You know, obviously that's kind of partly also what keeps you sticking around with us too, you know. Lindsey Hoffmann: Definitely, definitely the same feel. We came in twenty twenty four is when we came up to Maine and dropped in at Misfit Gym and I was like, This feels just like black fin, just more purple. Feels like very, very @misfitcoach: Yeah. @paige_semenza: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: similar. So yeah. @misfitcoach: Yeah, and that's the thing where like we had a lot of false in how we started our affiliate before honestly before Hunter got involved and and kind of professionalized the affiliate side more because we had so many eggs in the kind of the competitive side. But one of the benefits of having that environment and culture was the level of monkey see monkey do. When you have world class athletes in your gym doing a movement and you're like, hmm, that looks a lot easier than me with my zero hip extension. false grip, strict muscle up, right? Like, like that looks a lot easier. Maybe I can figure that out. And I think that's one of the things where when you, you know, I've I've been traveling the world going to different gyms for over a decade now. And you kind of know right away. You really do. You walk in, there's a class there. Like one of Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm. @misfitcoach: my litmus tests is the deadlift. Like if people are doing a clean pull instead of a deadlift, they got their feet nice and wide, double overhand grip, and they're like just not deadlifting. I'm like, no, it's gonna be a long weekend. I mean it's a good weekend, right? You get to help change the culture, but at the same time, like that's when we walk into those places and feel like, okay, this is my kind of place. Like we're zeroing in on the things that can be really helpful. And then again, like Paige said, like you said, just you there's an example of it right in front of you. There's like a real example of like, okay, that's how you do that. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah, and and honestly I try always try, but always try for me and all of my coaches. I'm like, we set the standard. So I don't care if you're air squatting, like you better do full range of motion because people are always watching, whether you're taking class or coaching and showing, like you're s you have to be on your standards for sure. And like Yep, people just watch that. @misfitcoach: I wanna go to twenty twenty-five now. I don't know that I know kind of the full story from your perspective on what kind of changed for you in twenty twenty five, your experience at Syndicate, like just just kind of Little trip down memory lane here for what twenty twenty five was like for you. 'Cause it's something that you had been working towards and was your goal for a pretty long time. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yes. I was well we'll even flash back just quickly to twenty twenty-four. I was like devastated that I did not make semifinals in twenty twenty-four. Cause you I'm like, dang, I've been putting in so much work with Sherb, like kind of felt like I was disappointing him. And, you know, at the in the moment you feel like you're disappointing everybody. But, you know, you get over that and it's like, okay, back to the drawing board for twenty twenty four, still kept working with him. And then, you know, he went he went his way. And then I still always have followed Hatchet. I do on Hatchet throw in like sometimes heavier weights or what I think pro would be at, you know, higher rep, different skills. so I kept on with the normal training and then the twenty twenty five open and quarters, whatever it was, was it quarters in twenty twenty five? However they went about it. Yeah, who knows. @misfitcoach: Nobody knows. There was no quarters in twenty twenty five. That was the year that they got rid of the only part @paige_semenza: Yes, good. Lindsey Hoffmann: yeah. Well I don't know. @misfitcoach: of that made other people wanna do CrossFit. Sorry. Yes. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah, so whatever the flow was in 2025. I know there was an open. So we did the open. And then whatever came next, who knows? I think it was an online semi. @misfitcoach: Correct. Lindsey Hoffmann: yes, I know it was an online semi because I know that there was heavy Isabel, and I was lucky enough to do that twice. So I did the online semifinal. @paige_semenza: So fun, right? @misfitcoach: Wait, you did it twice Lindsey Hoffmann: Yes. @misfitcoach: in semifinals and then you did it again at Syndicate? Or did you mean those two together? Okay, okay. Got it. Lindsey Hoffmann: No, I no no no. I did it once in the gym and then I did it again as the opening event at Syndicate. But I I really surprised myself on both goes there. I'm like laughing as I say it because I'm like, my god. But yeah, did the online semifinals in the gym. You know, you had to have your two judges and 17 other people watching to do all the things. And I got a backfill invite to syndicate. So I was like right there, maybe two spots away. And I knew I was like, maybe somebody can't go, maybe this or that. And I think Paige didn't go. Right? Or was that this year? It was Paige didn't go. And I think I @paige_semenza: Yeah, I didn't go. Yeah. Yeah, that was last year. I get my ears mixed up now. @misfitcoach: Did you give Lindsay her spot? Lindsey Hoffmann: I think I had messaged you @paige_semenza: You're welcome. Lindsey Hoffmann: Either I messaged you or I thought I messaged you because I was like, @paige_semenza: You probably did. Lindsey Hoffmann: This is not your dream, but you maybe kinda made mine happen. So in some way or another, thank you. @paige_semenza: Hell yeah. Listen, all right, if I'm helping to miss it out, I'm proud. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yes. So me and Tristan are actually sitting by his parents' pool. You know, it's summer, so we're having like some Corona Lights on a Sunday. And I look at my email and I'm like, I just got a backfill invite to Syndicate. And he's like, seriously? And @paige_semenza: The best feeling. Lindsey Hoffmann: I'm like, Yes. Throw this thing away. Let's go like get to training, I guess. No. so yeah, I was super excited that got the invite. Crazy, we actually have a drop-in, like a regular drop-in that comes into Blackfin. She lives 20 minutes away from the Knoxville Coliseum. And she was like, You guys are more than welcome to come stay with us. Like I heard, like I saw your post. you're more than welcome so you don't have to get a Airbnb or whatever. So ended @paige_semenza: That's awesome. Lindsey Hoffmann: up being able to stay up there for free. Thank you, Kim. and it just all worked out. So that was amazing. And Syndicate, I think. And we can get into it if you want to, but Syndicate is probably my favorite competition, close second NorCal, but favorite competition to date. @misfitcoach: Yeah, the @paige_semenza: I can agree with that. @misfitcoach: the context that well, yeah, so that that would be a side note is they just always did a really good job and it was such a bummer in the @paige_semenza: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm. @misfitcoach: later years when they hadn't really HQ hadn't really figured out what to do that there was nobody there. That was always such a bummer. but the context that I wanna give people that's kind of fascinating here is when you are When you have a specific weakness in a competition that is online with a lot of people, your leaderboard gets skewed in a way that does not represent your fitness in any way, shape, or form. you have this super wide net, and then especially if they go, so this would be this would be a way for, you know, people complain that there's no one rep max lift in the open or quarterfinals. It nukes the leaderboard. Someone that doesn't have GPP that shows up and does the lift. Like we had the thing back in the day where the Olympic lifters showed up for fun and whatever clean and jerked like 400 pounds and then just didn't do the MetCon. so with you, what's interesting here is when you get to the point where you are actually competing against other athletes at your fitness level. you finally get to show off how fit you are, right? Because people don't go to the leaderboard and click your name and see that you whooped their ass in every workout other than one, right? They see you we see the placement, we see that spot right there. But when we whittle it down to people that are actually relevant in a semi-finals type space, you get to go out there and, you know, maybe you can speak to this, prove to yourself for sure. and just to the world in general, like I'm like an absurdly fit human and there might be a few things that I need to work on just like everybody else. But it's just cool to see that like getting over that hump to get there. was important not just to qualify, but I think for you to be able to go like, I mean, y you you really you had some amazing events at Syndicate. Like you were able to really go out there and do that. So I'm sure there's a question or something in there I'll let you kind of take over, but I found that to be so important there because that online scoring when you're trying to do damage control is so weird, right? Like like there's there's no way there's four hundred people that are that are better than you, but you have to contend with something like a heavy Isabelle. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. I mean, well, thank you, first of all, because it's nice to hear that you're fit sometimes. but @misfitcoach: You are very fit. Lindsey Hoffmann: I I feel it sometimes. But then sometimes I'm like, am I? No, I mean, we've said it time and time again, and if you've seen me and watched me in competition, I am one of the smallest, if not the smallest athletes on the field. And, you know, that Definitely does not help my lifting events, the strength or the heavy events doesn't help. But I don't I don't feel like I'm at least now, I don't feel like I'm so far behind that those events are like not doable for me anymore. You know, I've come from a place where I looked at maybe in 2023 or 24 I would have looked at heavy as a bell and been like, I'm just gonna stand there. But you know, I am still getting stronger, so things like that. I I I don't it's it's not often that I feel like I'm stopped dead in my tracks to where I can't do something. And then like you said, damage control, it's a thing. Like it definitely is a thing for a competitive athlete, no matter if you're at open level or games level. Like there's gonna be a workout where you're like, mmm, that one is not gonna be good for me. But but I'm a I'm a look at the glass half full kind of person, at least I try to be. Like what can I do, whether it's in this event or in the others that I actually do feel really good about to, you know, balance and hopefully go up and up from there. And then another important thing that I've really had to work on, which again, Miss Fit Podcast, has helped me through the therapy sessions that you maybe know you're giving. is the goldfish mindset and Paige, you like talk about this a lot too, is like stop living in that moment that was a ten minute timer on the freaking floor that you maybe didn't do so well. Like get over it. You got stuff to do the rest of the day, probably, especially if you're in a like competition weekend, you have to just move on because it's done and it's over with and it's not gonna do anything but make you more sad and You know, wish I could have done this, I should have done this. Like that you w you can wish all you want, but you can't go back. So what can you do with the rest of your time that day, that weekend? What can you do to fix your mindset, the way you feel? all of that, especially like I said, in person or in online competition has helped me like tremendously through the years, especially the not hanging on thing. Cause I used to really get down on myself and be like, Well, everything's gone and I'm never gonna make it out of this hole, you know? @paige_semenza: especially when it comes to when you have those weaknesses and whether it goes, you know, it goes OK or doesn't go well, it's like it's so easy to hang on to that the entire weekend and like let it define your weekend. But like a lot of what I'm hearing from your story of like what's helped you get better and what's helped you kind of. get over these humps and these obstacles is a belief, like a belief in yourself. And the moment you let that one maybe not so great event define your weekend, like that belief lowers where it's like, no, you need that belief. Like you need to continue to hold onto that because it's gonna, you're gonna get an event that comes around, that goes your way, that execution goes super well. And that's where the momentum carries on with the belief, right? It's like, wow, I just did it. I just qualified for semifinals. can't like, I believe in myself. I know I can do this. The belief of like, knowing that being a PE teacher wasn't your end all be all knowing that like, you can go and coach and do the thing. Like all of those things play into it as well. Like those, those things impact your next step, right? Your next stepping stone. I think that's, it's Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. @paige_semenza: a cool story. Lindsey Hoffmann: I like definitely want to give myself like credit too for like and this can go for anybody, my members, anybody listening, like you can like self-assess and you can talk to yourself in workouts and completely change the trajectory of your workout. specifically in NorCal this year when we were doing NORCALSU, I was like dying. And I was just not doing well in the middle of that workout. And then for a second, I like backed up from the bar and I said in my head, I don't I might have said it out loud, but I think I just said it my head, Are you feeling sorry for yourself? I liter I really remember saying, Are you feeling sorry for yourself? Or are can you actually like try a little bit harder? And then I I may have picked the bar up sooner a couple of times than I wanted to. And then I was like, No, I'm like actually really, I'm really, I'm in @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: it. @paige_semenza: You Lindsey Hoffmann: 'Cause I was like, this should be a workout, that one specifically, where I could manage and and I can speak more on that too. I definitely feel like I left some fitness on the table there. But I was like, just check. Check on yourself and make sure you're not just giving into the feeling of, this sucks. Like, are you feeling bad for yourself or can you push it a little bit more? And then, you know, like nothing's wrong with even giving yourself a little pep talk, like, hey, let's see what we got right here. especially in those workouts specifically for me that like I said may be a good one for me. Push it a little bit. And of course in training that's a lot easier to do than competition because in training if you push and it goes really terribly, well like nothing's on the line. You're not losing spots on a leaderboard. and and that's something I've done more often too. Like if there's ring muscle ups in a workout usually I'll take those extra 10 seconds to make sure like am I ready to hop up yet? But lately I'm trying to like just jump up, see what happens. And like you're either gonna get fitter and it's gonna suck a little bit, but you're still gonna get fitter, or it's gonna go perfectly fine and you're still gonna get fitter. Like it's gonna suck in the moment and you'll get better or not. @misfitcoach: You can be let off the hook. You can be let off the hook a little bit. I've been going to CrossFit competitions for I think 18 years, and that's top five nastiest shit I've ever seen in my life. On the uneven floor, black, in the heat. That was something to witness. Lindsey Hoffmann: Hey, you what? Thank you for saying that the floor was uneven. Because people probably thought like no, my floor wasn't uneven. Okay, well then I got the uneven. I got it because I've never been in my toes like that before. It was bad. @misfitcoach: Uh-huh. it was definitely uneven. I think I'm pretty sure Kyle Moleen did a 300-pound split jerk into a pothole. So yeah, that was definitely the case. That is the that's Lindsey Hoffmann: True. True. Yeah. @paige_semenza: You @misfitcoach: the mystique of of the NorCal Classic. So I'm wondering what 2025 did for you going into 2026. Because if you look at your open scores, The last major leap that you made was twenty-two to twenty-three. You went from eight hundredth to five hundredth in the world. Then twenty-five to twenty-six, you jumped from like four hundredth to two hundredth in the world. do you think that was all physical, or do you think that 2025 and being at syndicate and doing that kind of maybe getting the monkey off your back helped you mentally as well? Lindsey Hoffmann: Yes, both. I I like I said earlier, I'm definitely like continually getting stronger and like we've chatted, that's my biggest area of of improvement that I can get. It's just getting stronger and that's happening. So yay, that is awesome. But I feel like going to syndicate I I felt like I belonged. Like a lot of people are like, I feel like I don't belong here. I don't I think People might hate me, sorry, but I feel like imposter syndrome is like kind of fake. I don't know. I like you're there. You do deserve it. I'm the I don't know, maybe just trying to be too positive, but you you work hard and you get somewhere and the zoom out perspective. Look at where you came from. Like you, I felt like I deserved to be there. And maybe I didn't end up super great on the leaderboard, but I wasn't in last. And heavy Isabel was there. So that was a super positive. Honestly, though. from syndicate and on. That did give me maybe the confidence I needed going into that like summer, kind of like the cherry picking time, time off. And then into the fall, back around to the 2026 season. I'm like, I'm a s I'm a semifinals athlete. I do feel like, you know, I can hang and let's see what I have to give this next year. If I continue to put in the work like I have been doing and all of the extra stuff, the eating, the stretching, the recovery, you know, that can't change. It has to stay the same year to year as if my goals are gonna stay the same. So definitely the monkey off of the back type type of thing. Like I felt like I deserved to be there. And then I had finally proven that I can do it. So can I do it @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: again? And then, you know, the the season being so weird for the twenty twenty six Don't you think? Don't you guys think that it was kind of weird the layout? It was it was kind of hard to see what was what, like what was happening. Okay. So that that's kind of why @misfitcoach: Don't get me f don't get me fired up again. I'm having such a nice time. I I Yes. @paige_semenza: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: I decided to do the NorCal qualifier in January @misfitcoach: As smart. Lindsey Hoffmann: of twenty six, because I was like, @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: I have a clear plan. And we had already kind of planned, like, we wanted to do a big trip for our anniversary this year. So I was like, well, if we we had talked about Yosemite, and I was like, if I make it to NORCAL, we can kinda like plan this whole thing. And I ended up qualifying for NorCal in a like 20th or 21st on the online qualifier. So that already, like back in January, was like, well, cool, I've I've kind of qualified already, but I'm also way higher on this leaderboard than I was last year on a semi finals leaderboard. So that was a Really big confidence builder, for sure. @misfitcoach: Yeah, the the thing that comes to mind here is I'll go back to and kind of re-explain the whole online versus in-person thing. When you are dealing with again the idea that you could take four hundred points versus damage control in person, you kind of just get to go for it. Cause like what's there to lose, right? It's like if it's damage control in person and, you know, are you gonna get 12 points or 24 points? You know what I mean? Something like that. That would be the difference between going for it and not going for it. And that doesn't do a whole lot to a like a balanced weekend against your peers. So Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm-hmm. @misfitcoach: you got to do Heavy Isabel, NorCal Su, the Clean and Jerk workout. and it's like, okay, now I know the bar is set here. Okay, if I want to make it into the next tier of strength athletes, here are the numbers that I need to hit. It's very objective data. When you're doing the open and you're like, if I could just be good enough here to like deal with the fact that that's gonna add all of those points. I just don't think that's the right mindset to actually go into the gym and get stronger. Right. Like now Lindsey Hoffmann: Right. @misfitcoach: you have true context of you go there and some people love gymnastics or running or weightlifting or whatever. And you get to see how all of those moving parts work. And I think that's a real representation of the sport versus online where it's like, okay, an athlete has made a ton of progress They don't have their muscle ups yet. And, you know, they took 700th in every workout and then they took 12 millionth in the muscle up workout. And it's like not Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm. @misfitcoach: just just not a good statistical representation of where you're at as an athlete, where somebody else who's mediocre at everything ends up way higher on the leaderboard than you. So I just think that I just think that now that you have context for how strong you need to be at the level that you're at, like you get permission to just go into the gym and find a way to get yourself there. Right. The open's like this big abyss where it's like, how do what do I how strong do I need to be? Right. Like a little bit, a lot more. Like so, I don't I don't know if you've thought about it from that perspective, but I think some of your more recent strength gains are probably from I do belong at that level. And now I just have permission to just do the work without that like pressure and and anxiety of like quarterfinals looming and what's the lift. Lindsey Hoffmann: Right. @paige_semenza: I think you have a pretty unique situation too, kind of similar to McKenna, like her, you know, her rehab, her recovery, like she is a physical therapist, right? She has that, all that knowledge behind her, she can apply it to herself and not just her patients. Like you're a nutrition coach, like you can use that knowledge for yourself while you're, you know, in a strength building phase and, you know, kind of take advantage of your own expertise. And that's, think it's, always, you know, having a unique situation like that. Like not everybody has that. Not saying like coaches don't need coaches too, right? Like, but at least you know, like you can check in with yourself and the reality of like, like I'm trying to get stronger. Am I putting myself in the right position with my eating, with my nutrition, with my sleep, with all my other habits outside of the gym to actually make that happen. So it just, you know, it gives you kind of that reality check. And I don't know, maybe you are working with the nutrition coach yourself, but I just, like when, you know, you kind of have those little advantages that you can really kind of pull from, you know. Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm-hmm. Yeah, I definitely have people in my corner that make sure I'm doing what I need to be doing and whether that's nutrition or my recovery or like, hey, sit down for like five seconds. so I I do @misfitcoach: Hehehehehe Lindsey Hoffmann: I do keep, you know, like you said earlier, I practice what I preach and I'm not gonna tell someone that they need to be in a huge calorie deficit if I need to be in a huge calorie surplus. You know, I'm gonna do my part of the job too. So I'm I'm constantly working on All the things and I I it's paying off, I think for sure. The scale says it's paying off, so hopefully it keeps trending that way. And I know that's not the case for everybody, but I I think it's gonna keep going, hopefully. but I'm gonna continue on it because I know that my goals like coming for this next year are to make it back to semifinals and yeah, like you said, Drew, I know what I need to do and the days like when when we have especially right now like you have the two lifts a day and then you know pick and choose kind of from there based off of your needs. I'm always doing the all of the lifts. All of the lifts are always on my roster for @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: the day, always on the on the forefront of it at least. Like those are priority. so the way my schedule is, I'll usually hit those first, whether that means I've like started to do the warm up and sometimes I like to mix in Part of the accessory as part of my warm-up to matching life just helps me get a little bit warmer in the mornings. but lifting is definitely my priority every single day. and that's something I've gotten a lot better at through the years, too, is not rushing everything. Because sometimes I do feel like, you know, I've got this class and I've got this person coming at this time, but then I have these pieces. Most of Not most every day that I'm training I do a double session. And sometimes if I have to, if I feel like I'm gonna get more out of my session, I'll make it a three-day session. Like I'll do my lifts in the morning, coach, eat, do a let's say, interval piece midday, and then at the end of the day, if I have a skill and accessory, finish off with that, just as an example. so I've been better about piecing out my training so that I'm not just trying to jam it all in at once. So I definitely @misfitcoach: Yeah the Lindsey Hoffmann: think that's helped. @misfitcoach: The cruel part of this equation is athletes who are, you know, to make it simple, more of cardio type athletes typically treat strength work like cardio work. you know, maybe go through the motions a little bit more, not resting enough, not taking their time, not warming up the way that they need to, and then strong people take their time and work through it. So you can see how that gap continues to widen. And of course the same thing happens for the cardio athlete. They're probably pacing a little better, strategizing a little better, whereas the power athlete isn't. So there's a give and take there. But the goal is to learn from kind of the other side of the coin. The goal is to listen to a podcast, listen to you speak and talk about this. because like you're in a a more rare position, right? Like if athletes are listening Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm-hmm. @misfitcoach: to this and they want the excuse to do less conditioning to come from you specifically, I think they should probably go look at your open and quarterfinal scores in the more cardio-esque workouts and realize that maybe they don't need the same schedule as you, but maybe they need Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm. @misfitcoach: the same mentality as you put into a different silo. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. Yeah, I've got I've got a weird like I don't know where I got the like push the I can be okay being uncomfortable feeling from. I don't @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: know. I don't I guess maybe growing up, like we we just were outside and did crazy shit all the time and we were like always working hard as kids. I don't know. We we lived on like a lot of land growing up and so I think that my parents making me and my sister be tough. @misfitcoach: Mm. Lindsey Hoffmann: just kind of stayed with me. I don't know. Sometimes I wonder I'm like, how do I push so hard? How do I like just keep moving when I hurt so bad? But @misfitcoach: I find that CrossFit when when CrossFit shows a person where they are naturally successful, you lean into it more. like, so Lindsey Hoffmann: Hm, yeah, that's true. @misfitcoach: you go in and you're like, wow, like I'm I'm just from like I can breathe in moments where other people can't breathe in. That's when you get the athlete who's willing to go to that place because they have a positive association with what they're doing. And the real question is. How do we do that in those other areas? Like that's half my job, you know, working with my my one-on-one clients. And it's like, okay, here's the bridge from where you're at to where you need to be. You already do it really well in this category, in this category, in this category. Find out. dig into mentally where you're at there and bring that over to this other thing. Cause you can progress at the same rate or even faster in stuff that you're not as good at, but you have to have that mental association with it. So I find that people that come into the gym, whether I would consider them mentally tough or not, like if they come in and they realize that they have the genetics to be a little bit more maybe aerobic, man, they just end up being that kind of person. that can just grind in that and then maybe I have to be like, okay, we're not back squatting 135 today and taking 30 seconds of rest. Okay. Put some fucking Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm. @misfitcoach: weight on the bar and do it and then go sit down for a little while and then come back. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah, I wonder too, because like I was never growing up, me and my sister were never like your state champion track star or whatever, you know. Like I definitely through my life, like I dabbled in track and like junior high and high school. I did competitive cheer and sideline cheer in high school, but I was never like gung ho, like always in a sport, like per se, like with the with @misfitcoach: Sure. Mm-hmm. Lindsey Hoffmann: the school or whatever it may be. We were never in sports like consistently, but I was always doing something. Like if we weren't like we would never sit inside. We would my dad would take us to the park or just go outside and we would hit softballs because he was on like a men's softball team. We would do that. Like we would we had a volleyball net outside. We were always playing outside. I don't know, maybe it's just the the work hard as a kid or like just always doing something as a kid too that kind of transferred into later life. And then like I said, when I was even not doing CrossFit, just like working a part-time job and going to college, I wanted to be fit and I wanted to always like work out and be strong or, you know, lift weights, whatever it was. So I've never was not I was never sedentary. I was never doing nothing. I've always wanted to be somewhat fit or moving in some way, whether that was playing a sport or something completely different. But Yeah, I guess that probably just carried over pretty well into CrossFit and then finding this competitive side of CrossFit and now here we are. @misfitcoach: So you alluded to it a little bit already, twenty twenty seven. What's the goal? What are you trying to achieve? Is there anything more specific than make it to semifinals? Lindsey Hoffmann: I definitely would love, ideally love to make it back to Syndicate @misfitcoach: Mm. Lindsey Hoffmann: with not a backfill. I would like to make it in for sure. Like no questions asked. I already I've already made it in. But big question mark, I guess, mainly on what the season structure is gonna look like. Not that that not that that changes the end goal, but it's so different sometimes. So it is hard to just pinpoint and be like, this is what I get want to do and this is how I'm gonna get there. I wanna see definitely see how Beach Brawl goes here in a couple weeks. That's not the end all be all, but I'm excited to see how I place there because I do know some semi-final level girls are competing. So that'll be kind of fun. But then going into yeah the next year I would love to see how or if I can make it back into syndicate. I mean, at this rate, when they change everything so much, is Syndicate even gonna be a semifinal? Who knows? @misfitcoach: Yeah, we don't know that. The the the way that @paige_semenza: Yeah. @misfitcoach: I talk people through this is What we are trying to do to you and for you is exactly the same, regardless of what CrossFit decides, right? We are trying to get you fitter, stronger, more skilled, better athlete IQ, you know, dig into this stuff outside of the gym. And when we can lock in on that, well, we're gonna come up for air every once in a while and be like, hey, do you guys know what the season is yet? And like it's Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm-hmm. @misfitcoach: I think it's more frustrating for logistics. Like it's the reason why there aren't as many misfit training camps anymore. We have no clue when anything is. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. @misfitcoach: and you know, you just don't want people going out there buying plane tickets and doing all that when you don't know what's gonna happen. But if we go back to what we can control, it's like We know, we know all the movements that they use. We know all the time domains that they prioritize. So we're just gonna do the work and then we're gonna get to a certain point in the year where they're gonna tell us what's going on. And like we can complain for fun, but at the end of the day, it's probably gonna be some form of open quarterfinals. Who knows how you qualify, but you gotta be fit and strong Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah, who knows? @misfitcoach: and skilled and have an athlete IQ to qualify, semifinals, CrossFit games. so I really like to make sure that we just get back to that mentality of, okay, it's it's annoying, but it's not gonna change anything day to day. Lindsey Hoffmann: Well that's another thing, like just that I tell like even my members is even though you might not have we might not know the end goal, you might not have a specific end goal for you personally, but like maybe like a numbers thing or hey, I want to be this spot on the leaderboard, but isn't your lifetime goal to be fit and to be healthy, you know, because you have people all the time that are like, Why why do CrossFit? Like, why do I do what I do day in and day out? And I think the better question is Why wouldn't you? Why if your body is healthy and you know, you have the means to go to a CrossFit gym, you have your community, you have your people like there for you. I mean, I could preach it all day. Why would you not keep trying to better yourself? Because the whole point of this is like longevity. We want to be fit, we want to be healthy. I mean, the perks are usually you're going to see some success and then want to do it even more. And if you're not seeing success, then maybe, you know, we need to dial in some specifics, but some way or somehow you're gonna find successes, whether that's a community, people that come into your life, just I mean, I could like I said, I could preach CrossFit all day long, but the layout of the season to get back to that is definitely shady sometimes. But if you keep the end all be all as I'm getting healthier, I'm getting fitter. And hopefully I'm having fun along the way. The work is the way, maybe, some would say. then I think that that it it keeps it like keeps you in it, you know. @misfitcoach: Truth. So we Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. @misfitcoach: always end with coaches slash athletes are people too. A personal anecdote, something you got going on in your life right now. people are gonna be really annoyed by what mine is, because they know what's coming. but the NFL season starts tonight, and I just can't talk about something else. @paige_semenza: You @misfitcoach: when that's the case. I've had my fantasy drafts. Yeah. Yeah. Page Page came into Paige came into the to @paige_semenza: I'm so glad Colin is around now. He helps. He helps me buffer. I'm like, I don't know. @misfitcoach: the meeting the other day and and Colin and I were deep into our draft analysis. but yeah, the the the Misfit Athletics NFL preview is here for you right now. I'm terrified that the Steelers are gonna be mediocre again for the tenth year in a row. in the NFL you want to either be good or bad. You c so you can get draft picks. The Steelers love Lindsey Hoffmann: No in between. @misfitcoach: to be fantastically mediocre. and I'm gonna need them to suck @paige_semenza: you @misfitcoach: or be a little bit better. and I'll I'll I'll leave it at that for now. But you guys know what's coming for my next few chats here. @paige_semenza: Lots of yaps coming, yeah. @misfitcoach: Yep. Lindsey Hoffmann: We are not NFL people. We're college game day people. So we're @paige_semenza: Mmm. Lindsey Hoffmann: like go gators through and through. So that started last weekend, but we don't I know, sorry, Drew, we don't keep up with NFL like that. Although I did recently start DCC, America's Sweethearts. And do you know what I'm talking about? So I swear to you, @misfitcoach: the Dallas guy. Yeah. All right. Yep. @paige_semenza: Yes. Lindsey Hoffmann: sorry, I'll let you go next, Paige, but sometimes I may or may not be really bad about warming up. And so Tristan was like, You need to warm up better. And so sometimes, you know, I I like to put on a show every now and then. So I'll be like practicing the Thunderstruck dance. And he's like, That's what you need @paige_semenza: Amazing. Lindsey Hoffmann: to do to warm up. That's what you need to do to warm up for like any session you do. Just practice that @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: dance. Cause I swear to God, like two weeks ago, I was like, I think I'm about to pull my Achila. He's trying to. tiptoe down this fifty yard no, whatever. But anyways, yeah. DCC is a good show. Not to do anything with football, but @paige_semenza: McKenna would agree. @misfitcoach: So in the in New England in the Northeast, first of all, there's there's really no good college football team. So I think that's part of it. there's Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. @misfitcoach: not like kind of the SEC, you know, that culture being there. but I will say, get to extend for the listeners gonna be really excited, get to extend the football preview. My Colorado State University Rams are one and no. We got a transfer from like a real football school and he threw five touchdown passes in the opener. So maybe it's just because we were playing Wyoming, or maybe they're good. So that'll be exciting. So there is some college football, but it's Pac twelve college football, which is like like not so great by comparison to Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah, right, yeah. @misfitcoach: Florida. Yeah. @paige_semenza: I'll just be waiting for Wyatt and Ryan to yelp about the Lions every week, because now I can't hang out with them every Sunday. But yeah, let's see. Honestly, you know what? I was messaging with Tony. Tony is one of my remote athletes, Tony Greco. And I mentioned how I'm just trying to get back into training with phase one. to make it about training, but that's kind of where my focus has been is like trying to keep like a really low barrier to entry for myself, get back in a hatchet, follow things consistently as much as possible. And it just was a really feel good thing for him to respond back with like, I'm really excited for phase one, I'm really excited. Like it's got me feeling really invested because he's had a lot of like personal things going on at home. And you know, I think the mental side for him, he's kind of like hit a little bit of a dip. So just to kind of hear him say he's excited, he's invested in me, I'm invested in him, just kind of fires me up a little bit more for the phase and just for the season in general. So it's kind of where I'm at. @misfitcoach: Love it. @paige_semenza: Yeah. @misfitcoach: Lindsay, do you want to do another one or was the cheerleading the the main the main thing? Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: Well, I did think of something because I was like, what do I have going on in life? I don't really have like an event necessarily or like something outside of just normal life going on, but something fun that me and Tristan have been doing this summer, which is not too different from every other summer, but it just so happens to be this time for us, is like we've been surfing more and I'm not good, but like @paige_semenza: you Lindsey Hoffmann: We'll even look at the surf report. He actually went this morning, like before he went to work, which driving to the beach from our house is a solid I know, right? So it's a solid @paige_semenza: Okay, Hunter. Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: like forty-five to hour minute drive from our house, but the way it you know, from hit from beach to work, it would kind of be like not totally out of the way, kind of like around. So we've even looked like to go tomorrow morning at like first light and go try to practice. So that's something in the off season too. That's like, hey, I'm still being active, but it's nice to like not be in the gym. So like for tomorrow's zone two, it won't be on a machine. It might be that if we get to go out and do that in the morning. But yeah, either paddle boarding or surfing @paige_semenza: That's awesome. Lindsey Hoffmann: is really cool at this time of year in Florida. Cause, you know, waves kind of are good, depending if there's like storms out there, it gets a little bit better, which I don't want. too big of waves 'cause then I'm out. But small to happy medium. @misfitcoach: When you're adulting, the idea of a nice, peaceful forty five minute drive and then going out on the water, it sounds a lot better than it does when you're like young, and that sounds like an annoying way to have to do the thing. Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm-hmm. @misfitcoach: And I will say one of the greatest things like ever for my peace of mind, was surfing and the time you spend out on the water just behind the waves sitting on your surfboard. It is the most like calm, serene. like meditative kind of place just sitting on a surfboard like beyond the waves like with your feet dangling in the water. It's the best thing ever. so Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. @misfitcoach: I would @paige_semenza: though. @misfitcoach: what's that? @paige_semenza: Sharks. Lindsey Hoffmann: Just don't think about it. @paige_semenza: just, it's so hard not to. That's all I think about while we're talking about it. Lindsey Hoffmann: I know I know @misfitcoach: When we were going so we're going to Maine. we were getting ready to go, and I got a DM from my wife that was the beach that we were staying at in Maine. It was like multiple Great Whites spotted at Pine Point Beach. And then my algorithm Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm. @misfitcoach: for a whole week was just people on their fishing boats taking videos of great white sharks. And like literally Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. @paige_semenza: Yeah. @misfitcoach: there's there's like seven beaches. in the town that I grew up in and the beach that we are staying across the street from has that. I've never though I don't know. I th I just like I don't know if it's because I'm like a math person. I'm like the odds of me being @paige_semenza: Big Ocean. @misfitcoach: the one that this dude's gonna come take Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. @misfitcoach: my foot, like, I'm not buying it. Like, especially if I'm not surfing. It does @paige_semenza: Yeah. @misfitcoach: happen a little bit more to surfers. like in Maine, Lindsey Hoffmann: Mm-hmm. @misfitcoach: I think I'm trying to remember I think someone was doing the swim with the buoy and it grabbed the buoy. They didn't end up Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. @misfitcoach: having any like actual physical contact with it, but it would like they had to disconnect their buoy, like the little floaty thing next to them, because the Great White it was like a baby Great White decided to take their buoy. That's kind of s that's kinda scary. Lindsey Hoffmann: Well the part that gets me is like going from @paige_semenza: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: going from like when you're out there from like past the waves to like here's the waves, here's out there, and then you go in, obviously if you're like going in back to the beach, is the in-between where like I could paddle right here, but maybe I just got thrown off my board because I didn't stand up and now I'm in like water over my head, just trying to get back to my board and I'm like, Okay, hurry, hurry, hurry, don't think about it, and @misfitcoach: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: I'm back on, I'm safe. @paige_semenza: Yeah. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah, so hopefully knock on wood. Geez, through got me looking at O search now before I go out tomorrow. Yeah. @paige_semenza: I know, not to freak anybody out. But that's the thing. Yeah, I can see @misfitcoach: You the more you do it, the more you forget about it, honestly. The more you are in the @paige_semenza: that. @misfitcoach: water, the more you're like, No, this actually is a very like calming thing. But the first @paige_semenza: Yeah. @misfitcoach: X number of times you're like, What's under there? @paige_semenza: Yeah, I liked the shark reel the other day. This is like two weeks ago and now my algorithm is sharks. So. @misfitcoach: All sharks. Yep. Lindsey Hoffmann: Yeah. @misfitcoach: All right, Lindsay. you were a fantastic guest to have right after the work is the only way episode because you've been working your ass off for @paige_semenza: Hell yeah. @misfitcoach: a decade.
