- 0:15Hello and welcome to the Easy Bubble podcast.
- 0:17This is episode #47 it might be a slightly unfamiliar accent as
- 0:23far as intros go, and that's because you've got the
- 0:27Australian host setting the tone this evening.
- 0:31Or this or today, should I say. And that's because we've got a
- 0:35few men that have been abroad this past few days.
- 0:39Some still are. Some have just got home.
- 0:41But I won't do the talking for them.
- 0:44I'll introduce them. I might start with the the man
- 0:48closer to home, closer to me. Ryan, how are you?
- 0:52Where are we talking to you from?
- 0:55Yeah, I'm good. Thank you mate.
- 0:56Dialing in from Citadines Hotel on Bork St. in Melbourne and
- 1:02currently sat in the hotel lobby, so apologise for any
- 1:04background music that's filtering through the
- 1:07microphone. We have big changes and these
- 1:10are double podcasts. Start at 2026, you've got a new
- 1:13host. Yeah, so one hit wonder, I
- 1:17reckon, bit like the Macarena. But anyway, well, thanks for
- 1:27making it right because I know it's touching on midnight.
- 1:31So the listeners appreciate you making the effort to to dial in
- 1:36and our second host joins us as well from the office.
- 1:40But and also appreciate you making the time because I didn't
- 1:44Ryan and I weren't sure if you would be making time for us
- 1:47anymore now that after this week, this weekend's recent
- 1:52efforts for Owen. How are you doing?
- 1:54I'm good, I'm good lads. Well I'm still 3 minutes off the
- 1:57lad who won the race so I'm I'm staying grounded, don't worry,
- 2:01don't worry. No, it's good to be here on
- 2:03breaking work, so we're making it work.
- 2:06You you and arm green both powered by the the broccoli
- 2:11emoji as well, right? So you have that that in common.
- 2:16Yeah, and he gave me a thumbs up when he was doing his shakeout
- 2:19the other day. So I was going to ask him to on
- 2:22the pod, but I wanted to make sure he was actually the chair.
- 2:25And he won the race first, but then I couldn't get him after
- 2:28the race. He was a very busy man.
- 2:31He yeah, well, I'm sure we'll unpack it, but both of you were
- 2:36were flying. I mean you with the the bigger
- 2:38PB than him, but both very impressive performances that's
- 2:42for sure. Was he joking solo when you seen
- 2:47him or they have like an entourage with him?
- 2:49No joking solo, but there's an Instagram page, runners, nerds
- 2:53or something like that. He was behind them with a
- 2:55camera. Yeah.
- 2:57Do you see they they always captured the shakeout runs now
- 3:00for some of the the top athletes ahead of a race which which I
- 3:03like, but it does intimidate me because often their shakeout
- 3:05runs are like close to 330 pace. So I do wonder if that's
- 3:10intentional or if they just that yeah, yeah, yeah, or if they're
- 3:14just excited for the rest. I'm Brian Ron.
- 3:18He is so smooth, guys. Like just in real life, the
- 3:21forward lean. He's just like poetry in motion.
- 3:25It's it's so, so cool. Yeah.
- 3:31Well, the agenda for this week is similar to to normal weeks.
- 3:35We'll have all the usual segments running results,
- 3:37running news. It will be a bit later on with
- 3:39running news given we've got a lot some pretty big results to
- 3:42recap talk about our training weeks in particular recap Owens
- 3:46race. We'll try and I think marry them
- 3:50up in terms of running results, recapping, recapping of Valencia
- 3:53and and Owens week, YouTube Diaries and double trouble.
- 3:59If we get if we get there. I've I've put together the
- 4:03agenda and cautiously put one in, but hopefully you guys will
- 4:06come through with something. So we might start with the first
- 4:13race of the save the best till last, dare I say, as far as our
- 4:16podcast goes, but start with the first major race of the weekend.
- 4:21And I'm not sure how much you guys caught of it.
- 4:23In particular, you own you probably had your eyes on your
- 4:26on on the 10K, but it was the world cross country
- 4:29championships were were hosted in the US in Tallahassee.
- 4:34It was Saturday night for me, Saturday morning over in the US
- 4:41and a pretty uncharacteristically warm
- 4:43morning by all accounts, which I think maybe played, which was
- 4:50probably favourable for say some of the Aussies and perhaps some
- 4:52of the East African runners as well because there would have
- 4:55been more accustomed to some slightly hotter weather.
- 4:59But I don't know. My initial reflections were that
- 5:03it was a, it looked like a fantastic championship.
- 5:05So it was really well broadcast and some exciting racing.
- 5:09I certainly enjoyed the the events, mainly the mixed relay,
- 5:14men's race and women's race. Course.
- 5:18What do you think of the course? Because when I first seen them
- 5:20like kind of announce all the different things they are going
- 5:23on, I was like, oh, that's a bit cringy and like not really cross
- 5:26country but at exhibition time. But it was when you actually
- 5:31watched it, I thought it was pretty sure, like something
- 5:33completely different and almost like the great leveller for
- 5:37everyone, like something new for them all different elements for
- 5:40all. Yeah, so I think the three main
- 5:43features weren't they was a man made mountain or hill put in
- 5:48there, a water area that was mandatory that you ran through
- 5:52and then they were called, they were alligators, but there were
- 5:55large wooden obstacles that that needed to be hurdled.
- 5:59I think they were the main. Oh, and a mud pit were all the
- 6:02key features of each lap. Yeah, I thought they were good.
- 6:06I think they change it up. They make it slightly more
- 6:08technical than what it than what it is.
- 6:12Look, I, I, I just think, yeah, I don't know, there could be
- 6:16various US courses. Like, you know, sometimes they
- 6:18do it through a golf course, like the Wisconsin course looks
- 6:21cool, the one where Connor Manse is dominating up and down over
- 6:25the hills. Like I think whatever they do,
- 6:28they seem to do a good job of it.
- 6:29They've got some fantastic cross country courses, albeit fairly
- 6:32flat and fast. I suppose.
- 6:33They're not like the traditional Irish or UK courses where you're
- 6:36running through the muck, you know, quite different.
- 6:38So, but certainly it just seems that when you're off the bitumen
- 6:43in particular running through that more difficult conditions,
- 6:48the East Africans just look so good.
- 6:51Yeah, it's like considering the grass element would have been
- 6:54like, we would have probably criticized if if it was just on
- 6:57like the the golf course type grass.
- 6:59And they've went out of their way to put these obstacles in to
- 7:02make it a bit fun to watch. Like those that Alligator Alley,
- 7:07they were like full on hurdles where it made the difference
- 7:09that some people were going over them compared to others.
- 7:12Like there was massive gains to be had there, wasn't it?
- 7:16Yeah. And perhaps my only knock on
- 7:17them is, I mean, and I didn't see any people run into them,
- 7:20but that would have, it could have been pretty dangerous
- 7:22versus something like hay, hay bales that you could hurdle.
- 7:27But look, everyone looked pretty safe.
- 7:28And I don't think, I don't think it affected things too much
- 7:31other than just made it hard, you know, would have pumped the
- 7:34lactic through the legs. But in terms of the results,
- 7:39start off with the first race of the day, which was the mixed
- 7:42relay, which I thought was a really exciting race.
- 7:46The winners were the Aussie team and the the team was Ollie Hall,
- 7:51Lyndon Hall, Jack Anstey, who was a late replacement for Cam
- 7:55Myers and Jessica Hull. Second was France, third
- 7:58Ethiopia. The host nations, USA were fifth
- 8:02and Great Britain were 7th, which included past guests and
- 8:06fog. But yeah, I can share some
- 8:10observations on the race. Or did you guys have anything
- 8:12that you wanted to to kick off with in terms of comments about
- 8:14how that played out? Now you go and I'll I'll bounce
- 8:20off you. Yeah.
- 8:22So I just, so the first leg was that I would say the stronger
- 8:28men's runners. So it went man, woman, man,
- 8:31woman and Ollie Hall. The Aussies like there was about
- 8:355 or 6 really close in close contention that Reynold Chariot,
- 8:41who was probably the best athlete in the field, and Ethan
- 8:44Strand. They were, they finished one
- 8:45too. But Ollie Hall was only a couple
- 8:47of seconds behind, which was perfect that so they all kept it
- 8:50really close. And then I think the the, the
- 8:53person that set up the race for the Aussies was Linden Hall.
- 8:56She, I believe is she, did she go to college?
- 9:01She I think she might have mentioned something about a bit
- 9:04of redemption or some some fond memories of racing there in her
- 9:07NCAA career. But she, she just.
- 9:13Yeah, the commentators said something like her, she was
- 9:17helping set the course up like physically put it together, like
- 9:21whether that be like Mao something or move something here
- 9:24due to our college connections back there.
- 9:27Apparently they hosted NCAA S I don't even think it was in
- 9:31recent history, but like, say within the past five to 10
- 9:34years. And then apparently like that's
- 9:37so the commentator was saying for like a course that would be
- 9:41the ultimate goal to host NCAA's.
- 9:43And then to be able to get, well, cross country on the back
- 9:47of that, they were just like was a dream.
- 9:49So I mean, you can see why Lyndon's so keen to do it, being
- 9:52a like home college course. And the commentators, they did a
- 9:56great job in terms of covering the race.
- 10:00They mentioned just Lyndon being quite like strong on the Diamond
- 10:06League circuit and running some remember she's done some gore
- 10:09with the pacemakers in a couple of Diamond League races, Fairly
- 10:11gutsy running and sort of not afraid to to push the tempo and
- 10:15really seemed to play to her favorite because it wasn't like
- 10:18she was sitting and working, wanting to key off people.
- 10:20She just, she just pushed and opened up a really large gap on
- 10:24everyone really. And it was the French team that
- 10:27were that were the closest. And yeah, I think we had maybe 6
- 10:32or 7 second lead coming into the third leg.
- 10:36And Jack Anstey was able to hold off or almost hold off the
- 10:41French team. I think they might have closed
- 10:43one or two seconds ahead of us, but they were they were, they
- 10:47were a clear one too by that stage.
- 10:50When I was watching Ansi's leg, like you said, he got it with
- 10:53like the six 7 second lead off Linden.
- 10:57I was thinking what must be going through his head like
- 11:01either would he expected to have been in the lead or maybe not
- 11:05even that far ahead. So he may have been prepared to
- 11:07like run at the front of the race or with a couple of people
- 11:10and like fight for first position.
- 11:13But it's a totally different dynamic.
- 11:14Thinking fuck like this is going to be so obvious if I blow it
- 11:18basically. Yeah, I, I heard some, I heard
- 11:21them interviewed after the race and they did definitely have
- 11:24strategies and plans. Like they knew with Jess
- 11:27anchoring that they just needed to put themselves in the best
- 11:29position they could given it's a 2 kilometre leg and Jess is the
- 11:34world record holder in the 2K on the track.
- 11:36So I think they knew roughly what to do in terms of Ollie be
- 11:40competitive and then the guys sort of had ideas on what they
- 11:44needed to do. I mean, I was it was pretty
- 11:46exceptional what Lyndon did in terms of opening up maybe 10 or
- 11:49so seconds on so many top athletes over 2 KS.
- 11:53That's really what won them the race, I think, or largely
- 11:56contributed a lot to winning the race.
- 11:59But yeah, he ran a really sensible leg.
- 12:02I did hear Jess whole interviewed after the race and
- 12:04she mentioned that her dad, which is her coach, gave her
- 12:08some counsel on just on course, just saying be patient because I
- 12:13think he knew that when she's 2 seconds behind, she just would
- 12:15want to make those two seconds up straight away.
- 12:18And the only way you I think he knows the only way that doesn't
- 12:22result in a win is if she gets flooded with lactate early and
- 12:25can't run it out. So but yeah, look, they executed
- 12:28a really good race. Jess Hall was, I think, too
- 12:31classy. France in second.
- 12:34I think the American team were potentially competitive, but I
- 12:38don't know if that sage Herda Klecker maybe fell or something
- 12:41happened in the first half of her leg.
- 12:42Commentators weren't sure either.
- 12:44And that sort of put them out of the mix, which was a shame
- 12:46because then the crowd couldn't get as engaged.
- 12:48But but yeah, it was it was a good start to the championships.
- 12:52I thought it was very, very cool.
- 12:54And yeah, cool to see the Aussies get up.
- 12:59Nice. If Cam Myers were there, was
- 13:03there, they would have absolutely walked.
- 13:04It wouldn't know. Yeah, well, that's yeah, You
- 13:08would assume that hit there a couple more seconds, right?
- 13:10I mean, that Jack Antsy's a 333 guy.
- 13:13But yeah, Cam's over 2K. You would think he would
- 13:17absolutely fly, wouldn't he? Yeah, but then again, like I
- 13:20heard that the English guy who's the young English guy that's in
- 13:24the NCAA at the moment, he ran like 733 or something for 3K
- 13:29indoors. George, is it George Kuti?
- 13:34Yeah. Like he would have been like,
- 13:36nearly on paper the perfect lad for that cross country.
- 13:40But he didn't even run that well, really.
- 13:42So you never really know. Well, and that's what the
- 13:46Aussies were saying was that Bathurst, the team they had,
- 13:49they on paper thought they would be the gold, more of a gold
- 13:53medal chance than what they were on the weekend just gone.
- 13:55But you don't know, do you? It's all and it it all turns in
- 14:01one leg like you can. They're all the margins are all
- 14:05so small and then just one really good leg or run one
- 14:08really bad one. And yeah, you're in the mix or
- 14:11you're off the bat. How would?
- 14:13You see Ollie, it's going to say nice to see Ollie get not only
- 14:19like the collective, the fact he's got a a world gold medal
- 14:23because of the team results, but his leg was also like pretty
- 14:26good as well, which is a lot of pressure on that first like
- 14:29isn't there and they would have known that he needs to to keep
- 14:33them in the race basically and coming home so close.
- 14:36He'll hopefully can like take that and build on it, get some
- 14:39momentum now, finally. Yeah, and he ran it so smart
- 14:43because he, it wasn't like he put himself in the front of the
- 14:45race. He put himself where he needed
- 14:47to and, and like you say, did any spoke afterwards.
- 14:51He just knew what he needed to do, which was be competitive.
- 14:53And it's nice when you've got an ace up your sleeve on the fourth
- 14:55leg. So they yeah, looks like they
- 14:58executed really well. Where did you guys watch this
- 15:02race? You create an account via World
- 15:06Athletics, so you just log on to the World Athletics homepage and
- 15:09then you log into an account through there.
- 15:12And there was a live stream as well as a replay so people can
- 15:14go in and and watch it again. It's really, Yeah, really well,
- 15:18so well done and all free so. So I was doing that, I'd done
- 15:21that, and after the first, I think after the women's under 20
- 15:26race, the stream stopped. I'll get it.
- 15:31Umm, I don't know whether that's just because there was some
- 15:34hassle even getting the stream like from Spain because it was
- 15:38Geo locked. So like certain certain
- 15:40countries didn't have access to it so Ireland did.
- 15:44So I to use my VPN to change my location to Ireland to get
- 15:46access but from Spain and we couldn't actually watch it.
- 15:51But then after under 20 women's race, the stream stopped.
- 15:54I was like if you want to watch more of this, you have to go to
- 15:56so and so that's cheap and bullshit.
- 16:00Yeah. Unrestricted, so maybe no one
- 16:02had bought the rights or something like that, so
- 16:04therefore it was not an issue. Like lucky enough there was a
- 16:08crowd from Ireland were actually screaming the rest of it so
- 16:11worked out well I got to watch it.
- 16:13Yeah, interesting. OK, yeah, gosh, there I was
- 16:18shouting it out because I was like, I can't believe they've
- 16:21put on a quality stream for free, but always.
- 16:24Nope. And then in the women's, the
- 16:30open women's race, I'll run through some of the results and
- 16:34then we can recap the race itself.
- 16:36But the winner was Agnes Ngedic from Kenya.
- 16:40Second was Uganda's Joy Czech Toek and 3rd was Senayet Getichu
- 16:48from Ethiopia. Some other honourable mentions.
- 16:53So it was in East African top 9. Tenth was Edna Kirgat from the
- 16:58USA, Lauren Ryan was 13th and Leanne Pompiani 15th.
- 17:09Carissa Switzer from the USA was 17th and Hannah Gapes who I've
- 17:15not heard of. New Zealand was 19th but largely
- 17:19East African dominated Grace, particularly at the pointy end.
- 17:23And yeah, Agnes and Getich almost went gun to tape like was
- 17:30incredibly dominant is the is the world record holder.
- 17:36I think in the 10 Ki think she boasts the time on the road of
- 17:382846, which is pretty otherworldly and I think is
- 17:44apart from who's recently born on maternity leave run.
- 17:55It was Chibet. Yeah, Beatrice Chibet.
- 17:57So apart from Beatrice Chibet, who I think might have been
- 18:00fairly dominant some recent world cross countries, I think
- 18:02she's was the stand out performer and I think they might
- 18:05have said this makes it 10 Kenyan women wins in a row.
- 18:11So yeah, another very dominant performance. 6304 she's run for
- 18:191/2 marathon as well. Yeah, outrageous.
- 18:22Like, she just, she looks so good.
- 18:26The Getichu, Chetek and Aichu, all from Ethiopia all tried to
- 18:33hang with, but they just didn't stand a chance.
- 18:35They were just running over threshold, trying to hold on.
- 18:37And they knew that after, you know, a few minutes of running
- 18:41at that pace, they couldn't hang with.
- 18:43So they settled down and focused on the minor medals, but the
- 18:47gold was gone pretty early. I think she's around like 28 mid
- 18:51for tanker as well. She's just like, yeah, yeah.
- 18:55Crazy stuff for me, yeah. So I mean, I thought it was very
- 18:59impressive by Lauren Ryan Leanne Pompiani couple of the Aussies
- 19:03like near top ten in those fields like just an observation.
- 19:08So I went back and because I was all excited watching world cross
- 19:11watch some of the older races and you sort of you see like
- 19:13different countries and different dominate over time.
- 19:18And Kenya from about the 2000s and even prior to like even the
- 19:2390s were incredibly, even the early 90s incredibly dominant.
- 19:29And Ethiopia was emerging and you have some strong Ethiopian
- 19:32runners, but Uganda's never historically been that strong.
- 19:35Probably not until around when they hosted the world champs in,
- 19:41oh, when was it around 2019 maybe.
- 19:44But that I feel like have become like the the 3rd East African
- 19:48powerhouse. Like they're, they're
- 19:50ridiculously strong. So they had in this race they
- 19:53had second, six, ninth and 20th, which like, yeah, you know, is
- 20:02that's four inside the top 20 along with Ethiopia that had
- 20:0812345 and Kenya with four as well, like.
- 20:14That's what's that, 13 of the top 20 from three countries.
- 20:18And so I just think Uganda are an observation and that's not
- 20:22just this race. That was across the board.
- 20:23They were very strong Uganda. So it means that any country
- 20:28outside of those three wanting to get a team's medal.
- 20:30So for the team's medal, I think it's the top four that count.
- 20:34And trying to get a sniff at a team medal is really very
- 20:39difficult, isn't it? It makes Long Round and Leanne's
- 20:45runs even better, right? Because then it's like almost
- 20:48best of the rest, like exclude these.
- 20:50It looks like a East African handicap.
- 20:53Take them out of the equation and then look how well they step
- 20:56up. Yeah, exactly.
- 20:58Like I think they ran, I don't know.
- 21:00I thought they were pretty exceptional runs really.
- 21:02And particularly like you look at that US women's team, it's
- 21:04pretty, it's a very solid team, either women that were top in
- 21:08the NCAA system or multiple like Olympians and American record
- 21:14holders or thereabouts. So, so yeah, very impressive
- 21:16runs, which was really good. They judged those races really
- 21:18well and it looked like they were switch switching up the
- 21:21place a few times which is good. I think Japan got a team
- 21:26Madeleine that. So Japan's team placed really,
- 21:29really well. Interesting.
- 21:32OK, I'll have to have a look. It's funny as well because, you
- 21:37know, the Lauren and Leanne probably would have been like,
- 21:41well, based off the times they finish six seconds apart, they
- 21:44probably ran large parts of that race together, you know, that
- 21:48they know the similar levels of fitness and like, yeah, they're
- 21:51running for Australia. So they would have been like
- 21:53helping each other, but they also would have absolutely
- 21:56wanted to like, bury each of the other one.
- 21:59Like, it would have been a big deal.
- 22:00First Aussie. I think so.
- 22:03And you remember it wasn't that long ago, it started December
- 22:06where they were both racing each other at Zatopek over 10K.
- 22:09So yeah, everyone, they both would have been wanting to get
- 22:12the wood over each other. But yeah, exceptionally good
- 22:16runs. And then into the senior men's
- 22:19race. I don't know, did you guys
- 22:21listen to the Let's Run guys preview any of this?
- 22:25But they were quite good at I just enjoy them generally.
- 22:30They're very funny. They, they were talking about
- 22:34taking their kid off and running through the mud pit and running
- 22:36through the water obstacles for for listeners because they were
- 22:39on course ahead of the race. But I think they cut away before
- 22:43that that happened. But they were on the money with
- 22:46their men's previews. They were very bullish about
- 22:49their US men's team, which is unsurprising.
- 22:51They're very patriotic. Speaking of yes.
- 22:55Can I just correct myself? It was the under 20 Japanese
- 22:58women got a medal, not the senior women.
- 23:02Sorry. And so the under 20 Japanese
- 23:05women and I think the under 20US men might have got a medal as
- 23:08well. That were probably the only
- 23:11upsets as far as getting medals outside of the mixed relay,
- 23:14weren't they? Yeah.
- 23:17Whilst you go there on the under 20, Women's Australia again had
- 23:21two in the top 25 and they were at 16 and 17 in the under 20
- 23:26race and the finishing top 25 in the world, so Isabella Valanotti
- 23:33and Helena Butler keep an eye on them.
- 23:36Good shot. So in the men's race, the guys
- 23:41did call this, but they did say that the big three to watch out
- 23:45for were Aragawi, Ebenyo and Kip Limo.
- 23:49So Ebenyo had a relative as far as his high standards go.
- 23:55He was the Kenyan champion at their trials.
- 23:59Very classy runner, but didn't go that well on the roads at
- 24:03Chicago early in the year. But I'll bounce back.
- 24:09And Arigawi, I think was only fifth at the Ethiopian trials,
- 24:14but is the most classy Ethiopian runner of their team.
- 24:18And on paper, the Ethiopian team certainly stacks up better than
- 24:21the Kenyan team. But as we know from history,
- 24:24whichever team Kenya seems to send does well over cross
- 24:27country historically. And then Kip Limo was the out
- 24:31and out favorite, noting that he'd run the Barcelona half
- 24:35earlier in the year and run the world record by 4050 odd
- 24:38seconds. So yeah, the race, the race
- 24:43started out pretty slow. Did you see Kyle Robinson was at
- 24:46the front early? There was a few.
- 24:49There's a big group of about 40 odd through maybe the first lap
- 24:53or two. And you can see through the
- 24:55splits, though that once someone, I can't remember who
- 24:58made a move. I think it might have been to
- 25:00Desi work who might have made a. Move.
- 25:02It was an American lad. It was the American guy.
- 25:05He's way out front. Yeah, clowns.
- 25:09Well, he, he's made that Wesley Kittus, you, you see him do that
- 25:16on the track and in cross country in the NCAA system and
- 25:20often he holds on. But in in his defence, he
- 25:24finished 14th, which is not a not a bad shout.
- 25:27But yeah, once the big guys got rolling, he was he was in
- 25:31trouble as was, as was a lot of field, to be honest.
- 25:34Like if he ran a smart race where what do you finished?
- 25:37Top 10 probably. Yeah, higher up.
- 25:39More, yeah. Well, yeah.
- 25:42And so if I recap, so the winner and he was just too good was
- 25:46Jacob Kipleno. He broke them at about 6:00 or 7
- 25:50K And yeah, he just looks ridiculous.
- 25:53He won it back first. I think he's I think he that was
- 25:57his third win. He's finished second once and
- 26:00won as a world junior. So from 5 attempts he's got 4
- 26:03golds and a silver, which is not a bad resume for world cross,
- 26:05particularly when it's not run that often.
- 26:09Aragawi was second. He just finished over the top of
- 26:12Benyo from Kenya and 3rd. So the again, the dominant big
- 26:15three East African countries were the were taking the both
- 26:21the team medals and the individual medals.
- 26:23The first non African was Thierry Deacon Manau.
- 26:29Yo, I'm quite confident I've butched that.
- 26:33But he's from Spain. And then the French athlete Yarn
- 26:37Shrub, who I think ran under 13 minutes on the track.
- 26:40He was one of three French guys that ran under 13 minutes last
- 26:45year on the track. He was he just beat home Parker
- 26:48Wolf, which was the first American that Adrian will shoot
- 26:52from South Africa was was right up there.
- 26:54He's been dominant in the NCAA system, recently turned pro.
- 26:57And then, yeah, Jimmy Gracia was 15th, who just he just picked on
- 27:01the line, your man Brian Faye. Yeah, Brian Faye, whatever run,
- 27:08he just ran it to perfection, right and sat back for the first
- 27:14for the 1st 2K and then he just worked his way up to the fields.
- 27:19Yeah, crazy, crazy run from Brian.
- 27:23I heard a few of the guys interviewed, and particularly
- 27:27those that are perhaps from the UK or Australia or Ireland that
- 27:31have now gone home or, or or have moved into professional
- 27:38teams, are still pro runners. But have such fond memories of
- 27:42NCAA cross and knowing that this was going to be back at one of
- 27:45the premier US NCAA venues. Talk about how excited they were
- 27:51just to have the opportunity to go back and just send it.
- 27:54And I heard him say similar. So yeah, it sounds like he had a
- 27:59like a ripping time. Yeah, 'cause he was where
- 28:03Washington is it Washington State or something like that.
- 28:07And yeah, he would have won or been placing in NCAA.
- 28:12So yeah, no, I'd be reminiscing among the good old days.
- 28:16I think Andrew Koskin, he was in that FSU for he started there
- 28:21and then he went home. Didn't like it but yeah, Irish
- 28:24seem to go well there. What's interesting, right, is
- 28:27because Brian Faye was running when we were recapping some
- 28:30results earlier this year, he was running Down Under and he
- 28:33was getting dusted by a few of the Aussies, right?
- 28:37Yeah, it's weird the way it works.
- 28:39You know, I don't know, just going through a rough patch and
- 28:44and yeah, just national cross it clicks from and Europeans he
- 28:49sort of he didn't hold back as much as he did this time around,
- 28:53so he was pushing it a little bit.
- 28:56So yeah, he's just, it's just taken that he must have gotten a
- 28:59really good strong and winter under him and now he's seeing
- 29:02the benefits. Yeah, I mean, the guys he beat
- 29:06home, like Grand Blanc's was just behind him and he ran a
- 29:09really strong race. Like the the guys just behind
- 29:12him, all the Aussies, like we've not even mentioned them, but
- 29:14like one of those Aussies being 4th at the world champs just two
- 29:20months ago. Kai Robinson, who you know, was
- 29:23backing himself in for a good day and is notoriously, I think
- 29:26he might be a prior first or second over NCAA cross and ANCAA
- 29:32former NCAA champion himself. Like some big names he's beaten
- 29:36and the guys that were maybe 1020 positions behind Kai with
- 29:42those Aussies that were beating Brian earlier in the year.
- 29:46So it's, yeah, it's interesting how it can chop a change.
- 29:50If you're Seth O'Donnell, are you Happy?
- 29:52Or Sabraton? Why?
- 29:57I think, I don't know, I think there's just levels.
- 30:00So this is this is the point. Like I think he's made another
- 30:04Australian team, he's ranked, running as hard as he can.
- 30:10But like, I don't know, was he because he was there?
- 30:13About how far behind was he from Morgan McDonald and those guys?
- 30:17Let me just get you. I've got it up here.
- 30:19I was looking that so that Thierry the Spanish guy was the
- 30:23first non African. He was the one who won Europeans
- 30:27when Owen was live on the ground just on Gracia on on the on the
- 30:32line. So he's he's kept all of that
- 30:35form clearly and from the Aussie team mate.
- 30:38So Kai Robinson was first, first home for the Aussies and 24th,
- 30:42followed by Ed Marks 25th, Morgan McDonald 31st, Isaac
- 30:47Hayne by the way, 39th. What I run that is Seth
- 30:51O'Donnell 45th and half to 54th. But surely, thank you across
- 30:58country you're putting money on South O'Donnell to be all them
- 31:00lads. I don't know if he's that good.
- 31:03Is he like, what's he run? That's that.
- 31:06So he's run 28 flat which is maybe worth 2740?
- 31:10No, he's run 2759 solo. Yeah.
- 31:14So maybe that's worth 2740 do you want to say?
- 31:18Yeah, that's way better than the lads.
- 31:20But like. Then was didn't Ed Marks finish
- 31:23second term at Zatapa and he's just finished twenty places
- 31:28ahead of a mayor? Yeah.
- 31:32Oh well. I.
- 31:32Think that's a great thing by that?
- 31:35I think he lets the big occasion get to him because he was shit
- 31:37in them in the world as well. Well, he wasn't like, he just
- 31:41didn't perform up to his potential, let's say.
- 31:45Yeah, I'm not sure if there's just levels as well, but yeah.
- 31:50And then looking at the British theme for some more context
- 31:55comparison to the first breath, David Malarkey, I'm not sure
- 31:59besides cross country, have we spoken of them in any form of
- 32:02all these races that we cover? So maybe we'll have to do a bit
- 32:06of a deep dive on him because he's finished 26th.
- 32:09So he's Kai Robinson 24th at Marks 25th, David Malarkey 26th,
- 32:18then Matt Ramsdon 5350 third. Sorry.
- 32:21So a bit of a gap back to the to the next breath, Jacob Kahn 71st
- 32:26and then Rory Leonard ship. Bit of a tough weekend for him
- 32:30finishing 79th and his eyes would have been fixed on what
- 32:34was happening where Owen was as well.
- 32:37I did see he posted a video. I don't know how that race
- 32:40actually went for him, but he's like he's almost cup of tea at
- 32:43the finish line. Like he's stumbled across it and
- 32:46then like is immediately over the finish line.
- 32:49Just like tumbled and. That's probably the the comment
- 32:53and that's where if you look at Brian, Brian Fay, who's judged
- 32:58it near on to perfection, right and run through the field and
- 33:02the way to run it. If you're just off and just
- 33:05going the other way, they talk about this, but the amount of
- 33:08places you just get swamped, don't you?
- 33:10And so and the margins in this race are probably so small.
- 33:13And so, yeah, guys have either probably the ability to like on
- 33:18a track race or on a road race, you can measure your effort.
- 33:21It's it's a lot more solved, whereas this it's a lot more on
- 33:25field and for more reports. The crowd was absolutely epic.
- 33:28So probably a few people just got carried away, didn't.
- 33:35They observation as well. Look at did you say the women in
- 33:40the women's field, 9 out of the top ten were East African and it
- 33:44looks like 9 out of the top ten in the men's wear here.
- 33:46Either way, clearly completely dominated both genders by East
- 33:50Africans. Then look at the 10,000 meters
- 33:54in Tokyo where like the Europeans had such a good run of
- 33:57it, it shows how much of a factor the heat was in Tokyo to
- 34:02bring it down to like basically who's the fastest at the end of
- 34:05a race rather than ultimately who's the fittest underlying.
- 34:11I think so, and that's where some of these championship
- 34:13races, I think if they just run super fast, it's hard to not bet
- 34:20on like someone from Ethiopia, like who finished second in the
- 34:255K Yomiff. Kajol Kamali.
- 34:29Was it Kajol show in the end? Oh yeah, maybe.
- 34:33But like someone. Mali snooker bronze.
- 34:35Yeah, like someone like him though, was probably, if it's
- 34:40set up for him with a pacemaker, like all those fast diamond
- 34:43leagues, he's running everyone off their feet, but they just
- 34:45aren't set up like that. So like you say, in terms of
- 34:48peak Physiology, these guys are probably a bit stronger, but
- 34:51they just don't get to show it. And if it's a sit and kick,
- 34:53you're inviting these guys to the a lot of the year in it PN
- 34:57athletes. Like remember, we've spoken to
- 34:59some of them and they're working on their kicks and their
- 35:01neuromuscular stuff, like the emphasis that goes on M the
- 35:05final, final phase of the race and getting that right.
- 35:08They seem to do well. Maybe another comment is that
- 35:12you know some of the European and American athletes are
- 35:15peaking for those championships more so than what they are for
- 35:18world cross. Yeah, they almost concede.
- 35:25Oh, and was Brian Faye the only representative as well for Team
- 35:29Ireland, at least in the men's? Yesterday the under 20 lad and
- 35:35then 2 senior women and Brian Faye.
- 35:38There's only four. He's justified the cost of his
- 35:42flight ticket, doesn't he? Absolutely, Absolutely.
- 35:50I think they mentioned over the commentary that there won't be
- 35:52another world cross until 2029. Did you guys?
- 35:55Catch that there's no podcast and it was it's meant to be
- 36:00every second year, but for some reason they're doing a
- 36:03three-year gap now. Umm and I don't think they've a
- 36:08country like lined up to host it yet.
- 36:10So, umm, but I think they're trying to make it a Winter
- 36:15Olympic event apparently, which will be super cool.
- 36:19But yeah, it's a shame. They should have these every
- 36:22second year to keep, I don't know, a major event every year.
- 36:27Like just put it at the start of the year like they have now,
- 36:29like in terms of put it started Jan and just ahead of indoors.
- 36:33Like I think it's like really well timed kicks off the new
- 36:36year. It's an exciting race.
- 36:38Like, I just think it's a shame that that, like, you're going to
- 36:43wait three years for the next instalment.
- 36:44And like, this event brings together the best runners over a
- 36:48whole, you know, anywhere from the 5K through to the marathon,
- 36:52all the best runners are lining up.
- 36:54And so it's so exciting. I think it's the hardest race in
- 36:56the world to win, and it should be.
- 36:58It's a shame Like Armgren and like Hab Tom and these sorts of
- 37:05guys aren't all toeing the line too.
- 37:09Happy savage. Yeah, happy sick, Right.
- 37:11But put more money on it. Apparently it's like 30 grand
- 37:14for the win. You know, you put 200 grand or
- 37:17something on there, get the right people in.
- 37:19But yeah, that was World Cross I.
- 37:23Don't know when. You guys met?
- 37:26Any oh, sorry, no, sorry. Because the clashing with like
- 37:29the heads of sport in like the proper winter sports.
- 37:33And they're saying that in order to be a part of the Winter
- 37:36Olympics, it needs to happen on either snow or ice, which I
- 37:41guess is fair enough. But imagine then they made the
- 37:44cross country race on snow. That would be even better seen
- 37:47all the Africans on snow. Well, so 2013 if you look up,
- 37:52and this is a bit of a preview of YouTube Diaries, but 2013
- 37:56world cross. So World Athletics, this might
- 37:59be near 10 years ago released a series of highlights packages of
- 38:03the world cross country events. So they would sniff together
- 38:07some highlights of each meeting when it used to run every year.
- 38:12And they're really well put together pieces.
- 38:14And 2013 was in snow. And I remember Aussie guy Collis
- 38:22Birmingham was in the, I think finished top ten.
- 38:25And I think there was an American in the top ten as well.
- 38:28I don't know if it was Dathan Risenheim.
- 38:30It could have been, but that was that might have been the last
- 38:33time an American was in the top 10.
- 38:35American male in the senior men's top 10, and that was in
- 38:39snow. And then I was watching the 1992
- 38:42race, which was in Boston, and there was an Irish woman that
- 38:45finished second. She just got out, sprinted,
- 38:47Makini, makini. I'll have to have to Fact Check
- 38:52her name. But that was also on the snow.
- 38:55So they do do it on the snow. And so I think it should just
- 38:58make its way into the Winter Olympics is is what I think.
- 39:03It would be class and they were also saying obviously, well, not
- 39:07obviously, but perhaps unsurprisingly, an African
- 39:13nation has never won a medal at the Winter Olympics, so no doubt
- 39:18that would change if that were to be the case.
- 39:22And inclusive it would make it more of a world world event.
- 39:26I, I did hear the counter argument being that it's a bit
- 39:29of a slippery slope like you bring this in and then they're
- 39:31just going to have a heap of other sports knocking at their
- 39:34head, you know, trying to get themselves into the Winter
- 39:38Olympics. But.
- 39:41Yeah. So to try and build the case,
- 39:43apparently Seb Coe is his team enforces with someone from like
- 39:48cyclo Cross or like mountain biking or something to try and
- 39:51like get that involved as well and add to the case.
- 39:55If break dancing can make the Summer Olympics, then you'd
- 39:57think cross country could make the Winter Olympics.
- 40:01Surely, even though I'm not sure many Kenyans we put in their
- 40:06hands up to run in the calls, they don't seem to like it.
- 40:10Give us a chance then to yeah. So that was the world cross
- 40:19country. The other one of the other two
- 40:23events that was on over the weekend was the Houston half
- 40:26marathon. And it's not wasn't just the
- 40:28half marathon, but I know we've really previewed the half.
- 40:31They have both the half and full.
- 40:33Before we get into the half, maybe just to mention that the
- 40:36winners of the men and women's race, I don't know if you guys
- 40:39saw the results, but Zahed Talby won the men's race in 20545,
- 40:45which I think might be the third fastest time ever by an
- 40:48American. And Great Britain's Kelly Hauger
- 40:54Thackery won the women's race in 2/24/17.
- 40:59And I did see her cross the line.
- 41:00She was a bit emotional. She was paced by her husband,
- 41:02which I think was the case when we were over in Maragami.
- 41:05Was that right guys? Yeah, he ran side by side with
- 41:12her the whole time there and don't know if it, I mean, a
- 41:18Pacer's a pacer. Like it's fine.
- 41:19The fact that it's her husband probably helps her a little bit
- 41:22more, but he should, he should let her go and actually like
- 41:27cross the finish line by herself because it just almost, it looks
- 41:30like a bit of a handholding exercise that sounds a little
- 41:34bit critical. But when you when you're
- 41:36watching the actual like when the camera shot pans down that
- 41:39finish straight and you see them coming towards, it's like she
- 41:43should at least finish solo. But I mean, it's actually she
- 41:48can do what she wants. She's the race winner.
- 41:50She blitzed everyone anyway. And I guess in the defence of
- 41:54that, everyone else had the opportunity to run entirely
- 41:57behind her husband and get paced by him.
- 42:01I do. He I'm sure he broke 210 himself
- 42:07for the first time. Shit, what marathon was it at
- 42:11that The marathon project a couple weeks back?
- 42:13I think maybe he ran 209 or somewhere.
- 42:17He ran 209. Yeah.
- 42:19So he's no, he's no joke. She is.
- 42:23I tried to look up how much they would have got for winning the
- 42:26marathon at the Houston Hub. At the Houston Marathon, it just
- 42:29says that they'll offer a total of $220,000 in prize money.
- 42:34Breakdown TVA. It's a bit average, isn't it?
- 42:40It's hard to figure out what that might mean for the winner
- 42:44of a certain gender isn't. It.
- 42:46Yeah, it's not. Going to be a lot though.
- 42:49No. And so then in the half
- 42:52marathon, in the women's race, is it Fente Bellonet from
- 43:00Ethiopia was the winner at 6449, just ahead of Sergei Gabra
- 43:06Salima in 6452. And third was Bouze Deriba
- 43:13Kajila in 6557. So some pretty, some pretty fast
- 43:20runs by the women. And in the men's race, as we
- 43:23foreshadowed, the winner was Hab Tom Samuel in 5901 ahead of
- 43:28Patrick Kiprop in 5914. And third was Mohamed El Youssef
- 43:33in 5921, eight guys under under under an hour, including the
- 43:42likes of Rory Linklater and Ryan Ford and Casey Klinger.
- 43:46So some fast times over there, but I think we we had the line.
- 43:51We didn't think that Zerson A Tedesse's Eritrane record of
- 43:535830 odd would go. And we you mentioned Ryan, I
- 43:58think in the preview that Connor Manse's American record of 5914
- 44:04or thereabouts was would have been in jeopardy if that's who
- 44:07you had Tom was representing. So yeah, 59 flat pretty much,
- 44:12yeah, too good as we as we thought he might be.
- 44:16Like for a debut, couldn't like much better.
- 44:19Really. Got it.
- 44:21Yeah, pretty handy. And he, he's a Hocus sponsored
- 44:24athlete, right? Yeah, so once he run some hoker
- 44:28rocket, something, I don't know. I don't know if they've ever
- 44:30seen wheels that fast. Are you ready?
- 44:35I don't know it's he's doing bits.
- 44:37Roker Damon messed their money well.
- 44:39Mate fuck that backed a good horse within.
- 44:42Like imagine what he'd do in AI. Don't know are those shoes?
- 44:47I mean here's the real deal. I wonder those shoes now.
- 44:52Like with the shoes, there's there's not much difference
- 44:55between all the brands now. Like they're all sort of on a
- 44:57level playing field. And like even like Casey
- 45:01Clinger, Hughes, Brooks, like Ryan Ford is on, Alex Meyer is
- 45:06PM. I'm pretty sure like Patrick
- 45:09Kiprup is either. I did ask her Freaking nice.
- 45:11Like there's a spread of them all, like they're all equal.
- 45:14Hilary Bores and Hoke as well, and he was at night.
- 45:18Yeah. Yeah.
- 45:18So like, there's a massive spread there.
- 45:21So yeah, they're all on level playing field.
- 45:23I'd say it's just Haptam is the outlier there.
- 45:26He's the freak. Physiology is pretty pretty
- 45:29solid. 2650 guy so it converted pretty nicely.
- 45:34Really now they're like Haptam get in the lab where we're
- 45:37making the Samuel shoe. But the sad thing is to kind of
- 45:44spin off the back of that if, if he was American, it would be
- 45:48such a bigger deal than what it is.
- 45:51The fact that he's just run that time.
- 45:53Like it'll probably just kinda it is what it is.
- 45:56And it's a great result now. But in terms of like being
- 46:00remembered and like the mass media across the world, like
- 46:04kind of promoting it, it'll just by next week, it'll be forgotten
- 46:08about. So like I've seen some
- 46:09journalists, they were overlooking his results and more
- 46:14so talking about this Alex Mayer running like the the third
- 46:17fastest American time ever or something like that.
- 46:20Not the fact that the NCAA champ has just gone and blitzed the
- 46:25whole race on his debut. Like that's the US, like the
- 46:30overhype, anything and everyone. Like who's the they were hyping
- 46:36you on Jane Henningren? And when there's that British
- 46:40girl, what's the British girls? The young British girl called
- 46:42she one year old. Cross, Fitzgerald.
- 46:45Like Hannigan wouldn't lace in Fitzgerald spikes.
- 46:49Yes, no one knows that in Fitzgerald.
- 46:51Everyone knows that Jane Hannigan.
- 46:53They just there's, they're hike merchants.
- 46:57But, and we do love the Let's Run guys, but they did they
- 47:02always drinking the kool-aid on the men's field, like because
- 47:06who did? Who did we have?
- 47:07We had Kip to Parker Wolf Grand Blancs.
- 47:11Like I was like, yeah, these yeah, Nico Young.
- 47:14I was like, man, yeah, these guys could meddle like.
- 47:16And then I was like, and then I was like, snap out of it.
- 47:19Like East Africa is going to absolutely smoke them.
- 47:22And they did. And so did yeah, look, I mean,
- 47:25they still ran well, but I didn't realise until the the
- 47:29race was running. But the NCAA champ who was who
- 47:35won the OR second just to behind Parker Wolf, who let out the US
- 47:38trials. Did you hear a bit of
- 47:41controversy with that just to go back to Will Cross for a second,
- 47:44but is. That the Rocky Hanson guy.
- 47:47Yeah, so apparently he had a stress, like a stress reaction
- 47:50and it wasn't until the night before the race or two nights
- 47:53before the race did he inform US track and field that he was late
- 47:58withdrawal. And so then they tried to get
- 48:01because they had two people as whoever finished what like the
- 48:05next two places back in the trials, they were the natural
- 48:08roll ups and they neither of them one was in like flag,
- 48:11someone was somewhere else and they couldn't get flights in
- 48:13time or weren't prepared at all to be able to race.
- 48:16Like they literally had two days notice or a day's notice which
- 48:20when Americans hosting it, it sounds like pretty poor form by
- 48:24Rocky Hansen's management. Right?
- 48:28So a bit shit I thought I mentioned.
- 48:31That seemed dirty. Yeah, I think so.
- 48:34And where was Grant Fisher? What happened there?
- 48:38He didn't do the trials, did he? Is he kind of focusing on
- 48:41indoors or something instead? OK.
- 48:46Did he? Was it recently got engaged?
- 48:48Was that a little while ago now? Maybe that was during his
- 48:51postseason, but yeah, no, recently.
- 48:57There you go. So on to the main event, right?
- 49:01Wait, one, one last comment, sorry, just to build suspense
- 49:04for Owen, slight, slight bit longer.
- 49:07And on that women's half marathon results, just going
- 49:12back to the world cross country as well in reference to Ethiopia
- 49:16in the women's took the team gold medal there over in
- 49:20Tallahassee. And then at the Houston half
- 49:23marathon, the Ethiopian women have also finished one 2-3 and
- 49:27five. So like what the hell is that
- 49:31depth to be able to throw 6 up over there?
- 49:35I did Ethiopia on fraud watch. They that's all I want to say.
- 49:42They're on fraud watch. There's nothing coming out of
- 49:45that country regarding people getting caught.
- 49:48So yeah, I don't trust them. That's all I'm saying A.
- 49:53Lot of smoke, you reckon? Yeah, but that's crazy fast
- 49:57running. Like you have to have some
- 49:59talent if you're running out fast.
- 50:03Well, that segues nicely because an Ethiopian was second in this
- 50:07race. So this one's for the the
- 50:10broccoli lovers out there, those that hopefully are doing it with
- 50:13lactate strips rather than injectables, taking blood from
- 50:18them rather than putting blood in.
- 50:21So you're going to say rather than no strips then that would
- 50:23have been good. Well, hopefully they I reckon
- 50:27the broccoli and the no strips go hand in hand.
- 50:29I think they're the although you did make a good point.
- 50:32When you're breathing hard, you're probably breathing out
- 50:34your mouth, so. I did, I did.
- 50:37We're kind of like going back on each other's argument here
- 50:39because I did also see a few more nose tapes this weekend.
- 50:42But like I said, when wants to see the actual research, I'll
- 50:46say sorry. It's like when you're buying a
- 50:48car though, and then you just keep saying that model of car.
- 50:51You probably anytime the you're within kui of a nose strip, it
- 50:54stands out. But I'll set this race up and
- 50:58then I'll hand it over to the man on the ground.
- 51:00But the Valencia 10K was we all tuned into this, some on the on
- 51:06the road, others from the stream.
- 51:09But yeah, so 10K flat fast race in Valencia from what I could
- 51:15see, the atmosphere looked phenomenal.
- 51:18The the IT looked cool. The weather, the roads look look
- 51:22flat and fast and it looked like the runners were there in droves
- 51:27and ready to to RIP fair reflections.
- 51:31Do you think of? Yeah, like you get there and
- 51:36it's actually a little bit cold in the morning.
- 51:38And I'd say it was around 8 or 9.
- 51:41And because the sun's just coming up when you're warming up
- 51:43and then when the sun comes up, it's like clear blue sky.
- 51:46Like it starts to warm up a little bit.
- 51:48But like, perfect. And apparently I was talking to
- 51:52Alfie Mantorp after I finished and he was saying there's a
- 51:55little bit of a wind on like one of the sides, but I didn't
- 52:00really, I didn't feel anything. So.
- 52:04But like, like you look ahead and just like a snake of people
- 52:08and yeah, it's and like there's big crowds of people everywhere
- 52:12you look. I sort of because you're so like
- 52:15invested in the race, you don't really get to like soak it in
- 52:17the atmosphere. And so that's one like sad
- 52:22thing, but, umm, no Incredible event if anyone has to be on
- 52:26everyone's like race bucket list to go to Valencia.
- 52:30Like the city itself is beautiful, like all the
- 52:33buildings, like every single street is like photogenic.
- 52:37And so. Yeah.
- 52:38And the where, yeah, they like diverted a river or something.
- 52:42So that's where everyone runs. This riverbed is now like a
- 52:45massive park. So like there's like cycle
- 52:49lanes. There is, it's like a salt.
- 52:51It's like a dark pastor running. There's green areas,
- 52:55playgrounds, astral pitches. There's a track in that riverbed
- 52:58as well. It's just, yeah, it's really as
- 53:01an incredible city. Maybe.
- 53:04Did we want to, umm, did you want to paint a picture of what
- 53:07it was like? Because when did you arrive in
- 53:09Valencia? Was it the day before the race?
- 53:13So I arrived Friday morning, so Friday morning there was a good
- 53:18few, like at least on the plane. And you're 1.
- 53:22Ava Crean, that Irish girl who won the marathon, she ran, she
- 53:27actually ran a Irish under 23 record.
- 53:30She ran 32 mid or something like that.
- 53:34Umm Efrem G Day was on my plane. Umm, yeah, he was just.
- 53:40Those are runners. And did he run the Irish record
- 53:44as well? Yeah, he ran a new Irish record,
- 53:47which I was delighted from. Umm, yeah, he's such a nice
- 53:50person. Like even like sitting down
- 53:52waiting for the plane and taking pictures with kids and just sat
- 53:55in a way. And yeah, he's just, he's a
- 53:57very, very humble person. And is it was that a direct
- 54:01flight from what, from Dublin to Valencia?
- 54:05So done to Valencia, Yeah, it's around 2 hours, 20 minutes, 2
- 54:09hours, 30 minutes. And so yeah, literally hopping
- 54:12up, playing fly across. And then we got a shuttle or a
- 54:17train to the like the city. So I think the train was like
- 54:2240-40 minutes or something like that, maybe less.
- 54:26And so yeah, I think we got like it there was these like you get
- 54:31like a ten stop ticket and for or like a 10 use like you can
- 54:36top it like 10 times and for the weekend.
- 54:40So but he could share it so I could share it with like another
- 54:43person. So then that's just two taps out
- 54:45of the 10 tops gone. And so yeah, it's super easy to
- 54:50get to like, yeah, the location we were saying was perfect.
- 54:54It was like, I'm not saying 8 minute jog to the start line.
- 54:58So umm, yeah, it was pretty ideal.
- 55:01Did you fly by yourself or anyone go over with you?
- 55:05So my mom and dad flew on the Thursday, so they were there a
- 55:10day before, but they flew to a place, Terviaka, which is like 2
- 55:14hours South of Valencia. So they were staying a little
- 55:18place there and they are coming home.
- 55:19They're still there now. They went for a little holiday,
- 55:21but I flew with my coach, his wife and my girlfriend.
- 55:25So yeah, I had a big little posse with me.
- 55:29The Smith entourage. Yeah, that was good.
- 55:34It's phenomenal that you get you go from Ireland to Valencia,
- 55:38including the coach ride in the same time Ryan goes from Perth
- 55:41to Melbourne or quicker than what Ryan goes from Perth to
- 55:44Melbourne. It is.
- 55:47It is pretty crazy. Like you don't understand how
- 55:49big Australia is until you like, you put it on Europe and like
- 55:52actually see the size. Is, is that an, A Ryanair flight
- 55:58that you're taking as well? Yeah.
- 56:00And like. It's the first time I've been on
- 56:03Ryanair in like 2 years since I've been home Australia.
- 56:06I swear they've made it cheaper. This like the actual plane
- 56:10cheaper. Like you're literally sitting on
- 56:13cardboard and there's no like like generally to sort of like a
- 56:18cushion for your head. Normally it's literally just for
- 56:22shit chair that like there's the smallest a bit of cushion in the
- 56:27hall chair. It is so shit and but it's, to
- 56:31be honest, it's like you're not affordable time.
- 56:33You had a bag and all that sort of shit.
- 56:34And yeah, it's, it's cheap. It's they have loads of flights.
- 56:40That's the other thing. So like it is probably it is the
- 56:43best option when travelling Europe.
- 56:45And but yeah, the seats are just not it.
- 56:49Our shoes cheaper over there. Did you try and if you had to
- 56:54take carry on, did you try and buy some trainers or anything?
- 56:58No, I didn't even look at any shoe shops over there.
- 57:01I'd say it's pretty much the same as home.
- 57:02It's the euro. Yeah.
- 57:06See if flight tickets like €50 and then you add your hand
- 57:09luggage for like 70 euros something ridiculous.
- 57:13No, they ride you. So one way, let's say it could
- 57:15be like 20 and then you add your bag, it could be 40, but then
- 57:19the way home it could be like 120.
- 57:24So that's where they get you. And I had initially planned to
- 57:29fly out Saturday morning, fly home Sunday evening.
- 57:32But my coach was like, are you really going to fly the whole
- 57:34way to Valencia? And like sort of not your give
- 57:36yourself like the best chance of running well because you've only
- 57:38a couple of hours down to saddle and like you just want to give
- 57:41yourself the best chance to run fast.
- 57:43So I got fair enough. So I had to change think cost me
- 57:45like 50 or £60 to like change to flight and to the Friday.
- 57:51So and block it was worth it. Yeah.
- 57:55And so how was the shaker? How were you feeling?
- 57:57Because I and I don't know, did you, did you want to recap your
- 58:02week and maybe mention how things went on Sunday?
- 58:06Because we didn't speak about this.
- 58:08This has happened after we recorded, right?
- 58:11Yeah, so Sunday I didn't feel the best.
- 58:14Like I felt a little bit sick. I don't know whether it's
- 58:16because like the house I'm in doesn't really have heating so
- 58:20well, it's not on a timer. So I guess to get up and
- 58:22actually physically turn on. So when you wake up in the
- 58:24morning, the room is pretty cold, especially when it's like
- 58:27-2 outside. So I don't know if it's whether
- 58:29it's I'm breathing in like cold air, like my throat is like a
- 58:32little bit dry or it just felt off.
- 58:34So during the recording I just didn't feel the best, but umm, I
- 58:38was like, ah, I'll just get out and do like 60 or 70 minutes
- 58:41just to get the legs. And it was super icy.
- 58:44So I went to this sort of like area, what like a trail and I
- 58:48was wearing them to my mag Max. So would like cushion shoes like
- 58:51big stack protect the legs and, and yeah, after like 20 minutes
- 58:57did nice. And I've so I've a bad ankle as
- 59:00well. Every all of my siblings have
- 59:02bad ankles. It's like in our family was like
- 59:04the last ankles, we say umm, so I rolled my bad ankle and umm,
- 59:10every time I do it like I just do lagments straight away.
- 59:13This one, it sounds like bad, but adrenaline hits in and like
- 59:17I jogged on and it was all right.
- 59:18So I think the loop is like 45 minutes.
- 59:22So I was 20 minutes in. So I jogged on another like umm
- 59:2710/15 and for the 1st 10 it was actually OK.
- 59:30Like I could get by, but then I don't know what the adrenaline
- 59:33start, adrenaline started wearing off.
- 59:35It started to get pretty sore, but sure I was still like a good
- 59:38bit away from the car. So I sort of like jogged walk to
- 59:42jogged walk and umm yeah, I ended up doing like 50 minutes
- 59:49and the ankle was pretty sore. Sunday evening.
- 59:52Still took anti inflams iced compression on it.
- 59:57Umm Monday morning I didn't do anything.
- 1:00:00It was pretty sore just to even walk on umm.
- 1:00:04So yeah, I ran my call. She was like, look, if you don't
- 1:00:07run till Saturday afternoon, it doesn't really matter.
- 1:00:09Just umm like give it every chance to come right.
- 1:00:13So I was meant to have my last session on Tuesday, missed that,
- 1:00:15didn't run Tuesday. Then it started to feel like a
- 1:00:19little bit good umm on Wednesday.
- 1:00:21And I don't know, like on your watch you can see like your
- 1:00:25total mileage for the week. And like on a Monday I normally
- 1:00:28have nearly like 20 K 21 arcade on.
- 1:00:32So when it's Tuesday and my watch is on zero, I was like,
- 1:00:34ah, like I don't know in your head you just start feeling
- 1:00:37unfit. Like haven't done a session in a
- 1:00:39while. So Wednesday I went to the gym
- 1:00:42and done like 30 minutes on the treadmill and the first like 15
- 1:00:46it was a little bit sore. But then as I get into the run,
- 1:00:50it started like easing. So it's positive and Thursday
- 1:00:55then I umm jogged again. I got what did I do?
- 1:01:01I done 45, I think 45 easy again and the same sort of thing.
- 1:01:08This time I done on the road before work and then again a
- 1:01:11little bit sore and then it eased as I got into the run.
- 1:01:16So Friday then was the flight day.
- 1:01:18So, umm, I, I, yeah, flew Friday morning and then got to Valencia
- 1:01:23and then I done a shake out and in the OR done a little jog.
- 1:01:28I don't like 45 few strides because I hadn't done speed or I
- 1:01:33hadn't like moved the legs fast since like the Saturday before.
- 1:01:38So like, I don't know, you just feel like you've done nothing
- 1:01:42like when you're constantly trained like twice a day when
- 1:01:45you go to doing basically, I think by the Friday here I'd
- 1:01:48done like 12 or 14 kilometers and so I was either going to be
- 1:01:54super fresh or super stale. Umm, but again, like the whole
- 1:01:59time, like the ankle isn't 100%. Like even today, like it, it
- 1:02:03isn't 100%. Like it still feels like there's
- 1:02:05an issue and bought once I got going on it like it warms up and
- 1:02:09it and it becomes good. So then Saturday got out to do
- 1:02:15my like proper shakeout. So I don't 30 minutes sticks,
- 1:02:18100m strides. And you, I think you'd
- 1:02:21mentioned, right, like everything's booked, you can
- 1:02:24you're going to go. So like if it if you can't run,
- 1:02:27you can't run, but hopefully it just loosens out right is your
- 1:02:31mindset. Yeah, like, come on.
- 1:02:33Come Wednesday during that week, I was like, look, because like
- 1:02:37I'm always like, oh, like I'm like better off like running
- 1:02:41through the pain or just like calling it and I don't know,
- 1:02:44like maybe I, I actually didn't even decide like probably what I
- 1:02:48was going to do, but umm, because then it started to come
- 1:02:52good on the Thursday, Friday. But umm, like like I always
- 1:02:55would have, always would have run regardless, even though it's
- 1:02:58probably not the best thing. Like you need to look bigger
- 1:02:59picture, but it's just like when you pay so much money, it's such
- 1:03:02a good opportunity to run fast. And like I knew I was relatively
- 1:03:07fit coming into it. So it's just like the what if
- 1:03:10for? Like what could happen?
- 1:03:12Yeah. And I think say if you're
- 1:03:14feeling like some sort of hotspot that you think is like a
- 1:03:17crack somewhere, then you're taking on it's a different sort
- 1:03:20of risk versus a notoriously bad ligaments in your ankle that you
- 1:03:26you probably know is more is likely to be OK.
- 1:03:30But you know, like it's, it's yeah, end of the day, it's your
- 1:03:34it's your call. But you're sort of weighing up
- 1:03:37how bad, what's the worst outcome?
- 1:03:38And that the ankle is, is probably not going to be too
- 1:03:43bad, right? Versus some other sort of thing
- 1:03:45where you're like, oh, I'm potentially going to put myself
- 1:03:48in some strife. Yeah, like the fact that I could
- 1:03:51like hop on it, no pain. It's just like the mobility in
- 1:03:55the ankle is like at like I'd say like 75%.
- 1:03:58Like I don't have like the full range of motion in a compared to
- 1:04:02like my my other ankle. I went to my physio on Thursday
- 1:04:06before I flew on Friday and it was like yellow.
- 1:04:08It's ligaments. He was thinking it might be out
- 1:04:12place a little bit, but like if I'm able to jump, I'm like run
- 1:04:16fast on it. Like it's it's not the end of
- 1:04:19the world. Like I can like I'm going to run
- 1:04:21this evening on it. Put it that way.
- 1:04:24But yeah. So Friday, little shakeout
- 1:04:27Saturday then got the park was hopping like so many people out
- 1:04:32doing their shakeouts. You see all the pro kits.
- 1:04:37Yeah, it's super fair. Such like good balls around the
- 1:04:39face. And I was just finishing my
- 1:04:41strides and I saw I see Mr. Andres Angren running and I like
- 1:04:49make I kind of it. I'm give him a thumbs up and he
- 1:04:52gives me a thumbs up back. And I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:04:55And then he runs off and he comes back and I'm doing like
- 1:05:03like jogging home and I'm like Vamos Andres.
- 1:05:08And then he smiles and he gives me another thumbs up.
- 1:05:11So yeah, we're basically, we're basically best mates now.
- 1:05:17So he's coming on the pod next week, right?
- 1:05:22I'll just need to double check with him for but you know, the
- 1:05:26whole vibe, the whole vibe around the place was incredible.
- 1:05:30And then, yeah, Sunday morning, got up at quarter, by the way,
- 1:05:36the night before the race, slept absolutely nothing and on and
- 1:05:41off because, yeah, like, it was pretty cold, like in the room,
- 1:05:46but like, 'cause you're just so fired up, you like, you start to
- 1:05:48sweat. And then I don't know, it's
- 1:05:49weird, but like. 88810 pastries go to the onset and just chill
- 1:05:55out. You didn't.
- 1:05:57No, unfortunately the Ryan Green so.
- 1:06:06Relaxed his sideways, but yeah. And no, so I grew up at quarter
- 1:06:126, race is at half nine, umm, so quarter six, make my breakfast
- 1:06:18around 6 had like porridge and honey.
- 1:06:21Umm just do basic. And then I start like stretching
- 1:06:25out, doing like mobility and all that sort of stuff.
- 1:06:27Half six, I take my shot on my meal, just the one this time
- 1:06:31I've learned umm then yeah, sort of chill, watch YouTube video or
- 1:06:36something like that. And then half seven, I take my
- 1:06:39bike AB and then by 8:00 we're sort of getting ready, getting
- 1:06:46out of the house because I walked for a little bit with my
- 1:06:49coach, my family and all that. And then I get doing my my warm
- 1:06:55up, which is just standard like 15 minutes to by two minutes a
- 1:06:59threshold like you feel, I don't know, you just feel a bit
- 1:07:02sluggish, like you're looking at your watch and it's like three O
- 1:07:066 and you're like, how am I going to run faster than this
- 1:07:08for like 10K? And even like this, I was like
- 1:07:14thinking back to the session, I don't where it was like 4 by 2K
- 1:07:17and in them two KS, I was hitting like 3 minute
- 1:07:20kilometers, but I 2 1/2 minutes between each Rep and I'm like,
- 1:07:25Oh, the hell am I going to string DS like back-to-back for
- 1:07:2710K? But it's like amazing.
- 1:07:29What like the taper, the people around you, the atmosphere like
- 1:07:34yourself, you get yourself up for It's crazy what you can
- 1:07:36actually do. Like on the day.
- 1:07:39Then I go to the warm up. So there was different like
- 1:07:42zones. So there was like the elites,
- 1:07:44the sub elites, they were like untouchable.
- 1:07:46They had their own little warm up area and all that.
- 1:07:48And I was sort of like wave 1. And so I went to the wave a
- 1:07:54little bit early. So I like, I think it was 20
- 1:07:55minutes before the start just to try and get like a good place on
- 1:07:58the line and umm, yeah, just chilling there, people doing
- 1:08:03their strides and then big announcements saying the elites
- 1:08:07are going off. Then you had to be gone.
- 1:08:09The leads go, then we've 30 seconds and they slowly move up
- 1:08:12to the line and yeah, gun goes again and it's just like chaos
- 1:08:18and go on. Before you talk about your race,
- 1:08:22can I just check you like very bravely last week on here, like
- 1:08:27pretty much stated what your race plan might be and like what
- 1:08:31your goals were and stuff. Did any of what you said there
- 1:08:34alter between when we recorded and like conversations you had
- 1:08:37with your coach during the week? Not the plan was to always try
- 1:08:42and get under 30 and like last when I went to the training camp
- 1:08:47in Spain, I sort of rolled out some goals for like it's coming
- 1:08:50year. I'm like 3015 was the goal.
- 1:08:56I was down then I'm like I had sort of like a go damn winter
- 1:09:00and I felt like I did have a jump in fitness, though, in your
- 1:09:05head, like 30 is like it is a big goal and like running to
- 1:09:07like break 30. So I'm like Valencia the crowd
- 1:09:11like even if I wasn't in that shape, you could nearly like
- 1:09:14rise to the occasion and so far, if I was ever going to break 30,
- 1:09:19it would have been there. I'm like the five Ki don't
- 1:09:21Christmas. That was a sort of like another
- 1:09:23indicator that like it could be on and the ankle.
- 1:09:28Like, I don't think sort of Dick could see it at the time though,
- 1:09:30could you? You're like Oh no, should have
- 1:09:33been faster in that 5K. Yeah, I know.
- 1:09:37And like you, I hate putting a time goal to a team because you
- 1:09:41never know what could happen. And like I didn't know I was
- 1:09:46going to twist my ankle. Like that could have totally
- 1:09:48derailed the whole thing and bought Yeah.
- 1:09:53And the race plan was to try and hit like just try and feel good
- 1:09:56going through 5K15 minutes and then try and kick it down.
- 1:10:02You might have mentioned that to us privately that that's what
- 1:10:04you wanted to do was that go through 5K in 15 minutes.
- 1:10:09But like I know you and I know how willing you are and I know
- 1:10:15how much you like the smoke. So how hard was it to because
- 1:10:20you did do that? I think you did exactly that,
- 1:10:22didn't you? You went through 5K in 15
- 1:10:24minutes. So how did you make that happen?
- 1:10:29It's, it is, it is pretty hard to hold yourself back.
- 1:10:32And I feel like that's what the marathon is like.
- 1:10:35You're meant to feel good. And in my head, in the 10K, you
- 1:10:37should be feeling all right, going through 5K because it is
- 1:10:42like after 5K, let's say it's 15 minutes worth of suffering and
- 1:10:47which I think most people are out to put up with.
- 1:10:50So that's the way it's sort of the plan was.
- 1:10:53And I feel like it's so easy to go out.
- 1:10:56Like I could have went out and run like a 255 or 250 first K,
- 1:11:01but it just sort of spiked the lactate that little bit and it
- 1:11:03just would have made the latter laugh around of the race and
- 1:11:07that little bit harder where instead because I was sort of
- 1:11:09controlled like I finished faster basically so.
- 1:11:14Yeah, but how did you know? Like so, yeah, what did you do
- 1:11:18to to moderate your efforts? Like, so you just, you just
- 1:11:21played that mantra and you just knew like that I agree with all
- 1:11:24those things. So how did you, how did you make
- 1:11:27that happen on race day? Were you just watching watching
- 1:11:30the clock a bit early just to make sure you're getting dialed
- 1:11:33into 3 minute KKS? So yeah, so the first basically
- 1:11:39the way the gun went off and like loads of people went ahead
- 1:11:44and I was just like sitting back.
- 1:11:45You started chopping your stride because there was this lad in
- 1:11:47front of me that wasn't, he shouldn't have been in front,
- 1:11:50but it that way like I was like the second or third row and he
- 1:11:53was the first row and he just wasn't going to run, let's say
- 1:11:56that 30 minutes, but go down. And so yeah, you're sort of
- 1:12:01chopping your stride just trying to find like a nice little area.
- 1:12:04But like this people are just flying by you.
- 1:12:06So it's just, it would be so easy to go off like a gun.
- 1:12:10Umm, but yeah. So I just try and like control
- 1:12:12for the first K and I looked at my watch and I was like 259, but
- 1:12:16the satellites in the, in the city, like it's not 100%.
- 1:12:21So umm, it went off like a second or two maybe before I hit
- 1:12:25the line. So, umm, I knew I was sort of
- 1:12:28there and then on my second K, it was like a a 257, but it beat
- 1:12:33like, let's say a good 10 meters before the line or something
- 1:12:36like a little bit before the line again.
- 1:12:37So I knew I was sort of like on it.
- 1:12:40And then after that I didn't look at the watch.
- 1:12:42I sort of knew like the feel and I sort of just like, yeah, sat
- 1:12:45in for enjoyed the ride and yeah, going through 5K according
- 1:12:53to the to the result, I was 15 flat and I was in position
- 1:12:59241st, which was yeah, pretty bang on.
- 1:13:05And then the second-half again, I felt good.
- 1:13:09So come 3K or so at six Ki seen the 6K sign and then I don't
- 1:13:15know, but I missed the the seven K sign.
- 1:13:20So I was sort of waiting for it and I was like I sort of had
- 1:13:23points on the map in my head like certain turns.
- 1:13:27I knew like the second last turn would have been like a mile to
- 1:13:31go Umm So I had that on my head to like sort of start push from
- 1:13:35there. But when I missed 7 Ki was like,
- 1:13:38wait a minute, when is this umm or yeah, sort of just threw me
- 1:13:41off a little bit, but I felt good anyway.
- 1:13:43So I sort of, I sort of gauge like a little bit after umm 6 Ki
- 1:13:48started like pushing on a little bit umm and umm yeah, I ended up
- 1:13:54coming home in 100 and 89th place.
- 1:13:58When you when you pushed on like we so did you have some people
- 1:14:02that you were sitting in with like early and then you just ran
- 1:14:06through them and then just used the momentum of just running
- 1:14:08over the top of people to sort of spur you on?
- 1:14:11Yeah, literally. So I was in the group feeling
- 1:14:13good, and then they sort of started like, or staying steady,
- 1:14:16but I started pushing on a little bit and then, yeah,
- 1:14:20you're just catching people the whole time.
- 1:14:22So yeah, like five Ki was 200 and 31st.
- 1:14:25I finished 100 and 88189. So yeah, passed a few and people
- 1:14:31are just like dying near the end.
- 1:14:33And did you, umm, did you, at what point did you know you're
- 1:14:36under like 30 minute pace? Did that, did that excite you
- 1:14:39when you started to think that that's this?
- 1:14:42I'm on here? Like when I was looking at my
- 1:14:45the watch flats, like I sort of knew by the 1st.
- 1:14:49Like in my head I thought I actually had time to bank.
- 1:14:51Like I thought I was on and then when I crossed the line, my
- 1:14:55watch said like 2929, but sure it was like the climber splits
- 1:15:01were so far off on my watch with the satellite.
- 1:15:03And then because the watch when you cross the line, the timer
- 1:15:07overhead was like 30 seconds ahead again.
- 1:15:10And so I knew, like I knew and I, I finished really hard, so I
- 1:15:16knew I ha, I was under, but I just didn't know like how far
- 1:15:19under. So, umm, I think when I was
- 1:15:21crossing the line it was like 30-30 something.
- 1:15:27So I'm I I or 30? Yeah, I thought I just scraped
- 1:15:30under umm, and then the results didn't appear for umm ages and I
- 1:15:36was just refreshing, refreshing, refreshing.
- 1:15:38It was so annoying. I didn't know.
- 1:15:40So were we. And so I, I just wanted to
- 1:15:42message Ryan privately because I'm like, because I, I didn't
- 1:15:45know, we didn't know at all how your result, how it went.
- 1:15:49And those, there wasn't a live results page that you could
- 1:15:53access and it just said like results pending or something
- 1:15:55like that. And so we don't know if it at
- 1:15:58all how it went. So we're just waiting in limbo
- 1:16:01to try and see when. They I was on your Strava,
- 1:16:03refreshing waiting for an activity.
- 1:16:05I didn't bother the Strava because I knew we'd have to
- 1:16:07unhide it, so I just I left the Strava.
- 1:16:12And but yeah, I was, I was going to ask, yeah, because looking at
- 1:16:16your splits, at the story that I picked up from it was that, oh,
- 1:16:21we'd literally measured it to perfection for 9 K, like when 3
- 1:16:25minute K is the whole way and then went right, chains are off,
- 1:16:29let's fucking send it. I'm on.
- 1:16:31Because then you run like 246 last K.
- 1:16:34You'd see that's I don't think that's right because then at the
- 1:16:37end there's like point. So my straw, my watch says
- 1:16:41around 10.09 K, so nearly an extra 100 meters.
- 1:16:45So there's an extra 15 seconds there that or 14 seconds or
- 1:16:50whatever that are unaccounted for.
- 1:16:53So I don't know. I definitely finished faster but
- 1:16:56I don't know what I finished in If you get me and I wish it's
- 1:17:01done, pay splits. I just add a second and a half
- 1:17:04per K. Yeah, so.
- 1:17:07So then like you say, Ryan, he wouldn't finish quick.
- 1:17:09And did you I noticed I don't know if you've.
- 1:17:12So in the live stream, Armgren, who's at the front of the race,
- 1:17:15he almost stopped at the first of those.
- 1:17:18So at the finish, they have it. Yeah.
- 1:17:21And this. Threw me off so much.
- 1:17:22Yeah, and it threw him off. He actually went to stop and
- 1:17:25everyone's like no keep going. So so for for listeners they
- 1:17:29have about 5 finishing shoots like. 30 years like all over the
- 1:17:33road. Yeah, these arches and so sorry,
- 1:17:37finishing, but finishing arches. And so he's like, have I
- 1:17:40finished? Have I won?
- 1:17:41And they're like, keep going. And it's so funny because you
- 1:17:44know, when you're just flooded with lactate, like your brains
- 1:17:47just not operating like because it's, it looks fairly obvious to
- 1:17:51the viewer, but to someone that's cooked, it was like,
- 1:17:54please let me stop. And your brain wants to stop,
- 1:17:57and your body wants. To and especially.
- 1:17:59No. Especially him, because he was
- 1:18:01first, like fair enough. Me 190th nearly.
- 1:18:04But because I started pushing like a mile out and when I seen
- 1:18:08the first, I was like, OK, OK, I'm nearly there.
- 1:18:10But still 100 meters to go after that arch.
- 1:18:13And the 100 meters was the most painfulest thing ever.
- 1:18:16You're like, no. So you know, you just go to the
- 1:18:18arms. You're just yeah, all over the
- 1:18:21place and. And because it's a long
- 1:18:23finishing straight, so you take a corner and it's probably about
- 1:18:26500 meters. So you've got this, you're
- 1:18:28sighting that those arches from a mile off, like well, from half
- 1:18:31a corner off. So there you're and it's
- 1:18:34psychologically, it's funny, you know, your brain allows you to
- 1:18:39push a bit more once you can sight to finish, you know, like
- 1:18:42it's something it just lets you release that final effort.
- 1:18:45And so it's it's actually genius if they've done this
- 1:18:48intentionally, but you've released to that and then for
- 1:18:51100 meters you can find another 100 meters, so.
- 1:18:54Yeah, but no, yeah. So the official time was at
- 1:19:002947, but I asked that Instagram page what time can I use and
- 1:19:05they said I can use the net time which is 2944.
- 1:19:08So yeah, I'm going to set call myself A294410K guy nearly a
- 1:19:14minute PB Yeah, I was, I was like after the race, I don't
- 1:19:19know. Because you like you come 190th,
- 1:19:22you're like, oh, like you're still like 3 minutes off the
- 1:19:25winner and all that. But like this morning waking up,
- 1:19:28you sort of like you sort of see things a bit clearer.
- 1:19:31Like like it was a pretty good run from what I came for like on
- 1:19:34my running journey and to even to ever be able to call myself
- 1:19:39like a 29 minute 10K guy and it's yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 1:19:42So, yeah, pretty happy. I'm like to run that in January
- 1:19:46and it's it's pretty good. Hopefully I can sort of kick on
- 1:19:49just again, let's just try and stay fit and healthy is the name
- 1:19:53of the game. Like and keep on building on it.
- 1:19:56But I'm. Yeah, Florence, Yeah, an
- 1:19:58incredible city. It's just built for running and
- 1:20:02the crowds of people supporting you, just around you, everything
- 1:20:07about it. It's it's a special place.
- 1:20:09Yeah. Couldn't have went any better,
- 1:20:11really. I when I saw the women's results
- 1:20:16in the half marathon, it made me go and have a look because they
- 1:20:19were quite fast. I was like, what's the fastest
- 1:20:21women's run? And I had a look.
- 1:20:23And the Valencia half marathon for women boasts the top five
- 1:20:26times like Valencia. Like for me, I up until recently
- 1:20:30only associated Valencia with the Valencia marathon in
- 1:20:33December. I thought that was the race to
- 1:20:35go to Valencia for. But now after chatting with you,
- 1:20:38like with the 10K, watching like the half marathon, like they
- 1:20:43have just carved out such an incredible series of events.
- 1:20:46And I mean, like you mentioned 190 people, like I know some
- 1:20:51Japanese races like Maragami, the depth we saw there was quite
- 1:20:55phenomenal, right? But for a European race, I've
- 1:20:58not ever seen droves of European athletes finished like like they
- 1:21:03did in that 10K. It was quite something.
- 1:21:05It was pretty cool. Like you've a snake of people to
- 1:21:08follow the whole way around. Like where else in the world
- 1:21:13would you have like that many people running sub 30 like
- 1:21:16nowhere. And it's it's crazy.
- 1:21:19I'm like, yeah, I don't know. It's just yeah, special place.
- 1:21:24And the only piece of bloody feedback for them is this
- 1:21:27results thing, given that like, yeah, people like my own random
- 1:21:33was obvious because he won. And then somehow they looked
- 1:21:36out. Eilish Mccolgans run because I
- 1:21:39mean, she would, I don't know where she finished in the
- 1:21:41women's race, we'll say in a SEC, but she ran a European
- 1:21:44record anyway. And they managed to like verify
- 1:21:47that almost immediately. But then all the other fellas
- 1:21:51who are finishing like from fed down to like maybe 15th, like
- 1:21:56just finishing in bunches and bunches, they're all running
- 1:21:59records for their own countries. And because like the difference,
- 1:22:02like you said, between like the the gun time and the net time,
- 1:22:07you can't verify like what the exact record was for almost
- 1:22:11hours after the race. And everyone's like kind of
- 1:22:13sitting around like shit, what's like so and so actually ran.
- 1:22:17So that's the only thing that they need to level upon, I
- 1:22:20think. And maybe on some of these
- 1:22:24results, so, so the winner was Andreas Armgren in 2645, I think
- 1:22:32beating bettering his existing European record of 2653 that he
- 1:22:37ran at Valencia last year. Second was Kahari Bajiga from
- 1:22:43Ethiopia in 2651, and Victor Kipruto from Kenya was third in
- 1:22:472717. And then, yeah, I don't know if
- 1:22:53we mentioned it, but that group of runners in that sort of 2720
- 1:22:56to 2740 range, they just came flooding through.
- 1:22:59And that included that some new, and that gave rise to some new
- 1:23:05national records. So Mohammed Abdullahi from
- 1:23:10Germany in 2722, Magnus Mahir from Norway 2722 as well.
- 1:23:17Sad or said Macau. So I know, I think his brother
- 1:23:20is the one that I remember from the Diamond League circuit from
- 1:23:23a few years ago, from Spain in 2725, Carlos Pinto from
- 1:23:31Portugal, 2737. Joe Wigfield, who Ryan you've
- 1:23:36interviewed on the POD is now the equal British record holder
- 1:23:40in 2738. And as we spoke about G'day from
- 1:23:45Ireland 2738 and is it Magnuson from Iceland 2740, These guys
- 1:23:51literally like we're all in a pack just sprinting down those
- 1:23:56through those arches together. It was quite cool to see.
- 1:23:58And yeah, I mean, it clearly is a destination race but for so
- 1:24:02many, and that's probably what helps.
- 1:24:05It's a bit self fulfilling now, isn't it?
- 1:24:07Everyone now knows to go there, everyone peaks for it now,
- 1:24:10everyone's racing everyone else there.
- 1:24:11So it just makes the race even better like. 100% I'm going to
- 1:24:16try and do it next year again. Yeah.
- 1:24:18And. Why wouldn't you write like,
- 1:24:21yeah, what a what a amazing event and this time of year,
- 1:24:26like is it, is there a better race to to pick?
- 1:24:31I don't think so, right? No, yeah, it's yeah, crazy.
- 1:24:34And you make a nice little holiday out of it.
- 1:24:36Yeah. That that Magnus guy, I've just
- 1:24:41googled him. So the guy you said set a
- 1:24:43Norwegian record. If you've watched any of Jacob
- 1:24:47Ingerbritsen's YouTube videos, he often has a friend in them
- 1:24:50and he's called Magnus and that's seemingly him like his
- 1:24:53training partner. There's just run 10K Norwegian
- 1:24:56record which is quite bizarre. From the videos I didn't gather
- 1:25:00that he was that good of an athlete.
- 1:25:04And Owen, in terms of that 32nd delay, no more of that next
- 1:25:08year, right? So now you've run under 30
- 1:25:11minutes, you'll be able to get into that that next year, which
- 1:25:15will be great. Yeah, sort of opens up a lot
- 1:25:17more doors, like to get into that elite entry, like even from
- 1:25:20origami, that half marathon, like one of the understanders to
- 1:25:23get today waves was to run a sub 30 minute 10K.
- 1:25:26And so, yeah, and hopefully I'll be in the Sobelite box from now
- 1:25:31on. And while we're on the topic of
- 1:25:35results, Alish Mccolgan, she ran very well, judged race 2 splits
- 1:25:43of 1504 to run 3008 and take 2 seconds off the European women's
- 1:25:4910K road record, which was set only earlier in the week at
- 1:25:533010. So a very good performance.
- 1:25:57The winners, the top three in the women's race was Brended
- 1:26:02Checha from Kenya in 2925, Lakina and Emma Bell, Oh Gosh in
- 1:26:112929 and Claire Dewar from Kenya in 2949.
- 1:26:17Four women under 30 minutes, which is, yeah, good going.
- 1:26:23Hailish was in eight in 3008. When I was watching the stream,
- 1:26:28I was trying to, well, couple of things.
- 1:26:32So I was watching the stream and I was watching it with my mate
- 1:26:35who's the reason why I'm over on holiday in Melbourne.
- 1:26:38He's came over from the UK and he's casual interest in running
- 1:26:43and he knows a few people like so he was happy for me to put
- 1:26:46the stream on. So watching obviously all eyes
- 1:26:50on like Omgren, European record watch and also whether Owen
- 1:26:54might appear at any point. So then Omgren finishes and then
- 1:26:58he's like, because he's from Wallasey as well where I am,
- 1:27:02he's like that, What the hell is that?
- 1:27:04Joe Wigfield like just dipping past a few Brits, like right
- 1:27:07towards the end. And I was like, what the fuck?
- 1:27:10Like had to whip my phone out dead quick, see, And he'd done a
- 1:27:12shakeout in Valencia yesterday. And I was like, hang on, Rory
- 1:27:17Leonard's British record is like 2738 and he's he's just come
- 1:27:22across the line at like 35 or 36.
- 1:27:24Like, Are you sure that's Joe Wickfield?
- 1:27:27Like replaying it over and over. And I was like, it literally is.
- 1:27:32But I can't quite comprehend the fact that he might have just run
- 1:27:35a British record. Like, what on earth is all that
- 1:27:38about? And then the commentator didn't
- 1:27:40mention it for ages. And then eventually he says
- 1:27:43like, oh, the man from the world is he's paid his own way over.
- 1:27:47He wasn't in the elite field. He was in the subelate field and
- 1:27:52as we know from like the conversation with him, he's just
- 1:27:54like kind of came from the clouds a little bit.
- 1:27:56Like he's always been on the periphery is maybe like a bit of
- 1:28:00an overstatement even. He's been trying to breakthrough
- 1:28:04just to like get there and then to to do something like that.
- 1:28:08It's just obscene. And he like he said, he he's on
- 1:28:11these kind of free kick deals on a one off basis where they'll
- 1:28:15send them a pair of shoes and a vest for a race.
- 1:28:18And he's been like kind of cycling through different brands
- 1:28:21doing that. So it's made-up for him to kind
- 1:28:25of get a result like that on the board because he's been fighting
- 1:28:28through the 8 hundreds and the 1500s over the past three or
- 1:28:32five years. He thought that that was his
- 1:28:34place and he never, I don't think got any results he felt
- 1:28:38was justified. So based on his half marathon at
- 1:28:41Manchester, beating Johnny Miller and then this 10K, I
- 1:28:45think he might have to stop getting bored in these longer
- 1:28:48distance races and actually commit to it because he could
- 1:28:52have some major championships coming his way.
- 1:28:54But. He's got the euro standard now
- 1:28:57as well, so Europeans come games, he's there.
- 1:29:03That's crazy. Just that I had a reflection on
- 1:29:08this because we've obviously seen say droves of East Africans
- 1:29:13run fast times and people hypothesize over their what
- 1:29:17their training methods are and what we could implement in order
- 1:29:21to, you know, improve. And then similarly with Japanese
- 1:29:27and the notorious high mileage and what they do and their
- 1:29:31university system in terms of how they've improved.
- 1:29:34But like to see a, you know, schools of European athletes
- 1:29:39running so well, it made me reflect a bit on, Hey, what,
- 1:29:45what's everyone doing now? Because 10 years ago, people
- 1:29:48weren't that far with or without super shoes.
- 1:29:51People, people weren't running that quickly and not that.
- 1:29:54And, and the depth isn't was it was not anything like what it is
- 1:30:00now. Do you guys have any initial
- 1:30:03thoughts on on training styles, training methods or what people
- 1:30:07are doing? That's that's changing the game
- 1:30:10seemingly in terms of European, umm, threshold and distance
- 1:30:15running. I think it's just like life,
- 1:30:20like people used to freaking ride horses, now they don't know
- 1:30:24we drive cars. Like God only knows what's gonna
- 1:30:26happen in the future. Like people just evolve and
- 1:30:28improve. And yeah, the shoes, the
- 1:30:31nutrition, training has all changed.
- 1:30:33So, umm, all these are changing. So you're obviously going to see
- 1:30:37massive time improvements, but do you think and people are
- 1:30:40getting better at evading the the Oprahs or the?
- 1:30:44But do you think these European athletes are like, to think that
- 1:30:47a lot of them are clean and they're just, they're running
- 1:30:49times that are putting them on a playing field with other
- 1:30:52countries? Like it's like a big cultural
- 1:30:54shift. And I had a reflection that is
- 1:30:57it, is it double threshold that's bridging the gap?
- 1:30:59Is it just dragging talent that was being lost to team sports
- 1:31:03that people are now curious about running?
- 1:31:05Like what is it that's making run it like people wanting to do
- 1:31:08running and do it so well? My first thought when you asked
- 1:31:13it was maybe it's the sharing of information.
- 1:31:16So like training principles are so well documented now.
- 1:31:21So maybe in the past where people wouldn't come on public
- 1:31:25forums and speak about the training methods and we wouldn't
- 1:31:28have access to the science and the data as to physically how we
- 1:31:32get fitter and how we implement that from a weekly basis.
- 1:31:36Whereas now it's kind of well understood and it's taken a few
- 1:31:41years to kind of catch on. And in the past, maybe only a
- 1:31:45couple of people may have had it figured out and knew exactly
- 1:31:48what they were doing and why. Whereas everyone else was kind
- 1:31:50of going through that trial and error of throwing shit at the
- 1:31:54wall and hoping it would stick. But now it's almost like, well,
- 1:31:57we know it. Or where we just need to wait.
- 1:32:01Yeah, it's a good shout. Like I remember 10 years ago I
- 1:32:04was on Strava, but it was like a like a cycling app.
- 1:32:08Like there's one or two people. I remember people on the Strava
- 1:32:11leaderboards and there's only a few of us on there.
- 1:32:16But otherwise, like prior to that, I'd maybe vlog, there's
- 1:32:19this really old vlog somewhere about my training program, but
- 1:32:22you would otherwise keep it maybe in a diary.
- 1:32:24And the way I'd glean information, Like you'd read
- 1:32:27like a Let's Run magazine or read a book about what running
- 1:32:30was like in the 80s and learn of these stories.
- 1:32:33But it was always a bit of Chinese whispers or stuff you'd
- 1:32:37glean from a novel, but not really.
- 1:32:39You wouldn't see training like it is now, wasn't calculated
- 1:32:43like what it is now. There was no.
- 1:32:45Yeah, this information wave we're in around training methods
- 1:32:49and what might work for you and your ability to apply it and get
- 1:32:53objective feedback. It's like, yeah, it's a
- 1:32:57different area, isn't it? It's cool because like, well,
- 1:33:01well let's stop. Like girl, people just keep on
- 1:33:04getting faster and faster and faster.
- 1:33:05Like how fast can the human body?
- 1:33:07Like how far can be pushed? Yeah, and that's sort of what
- 1:33:11Evan was talking about, wasn't he?
- 1:33:13When we were talking to Omio a bit, he sort of is bit that old
- 1:33:17school in a way where it's like we just train really hard.
- 1:33:21Whereas now he's like when you're measuring your lactate
- 1:33:24levels so regularly when you're taking all these products to aid
- 1:33:26recovery, when the shoes allow you to recover quicker but train
- 1:33:30super hard, you can You Can Dance a line that previously
- 1:33:33probably wasn't possible or is incredibly risky and not many
- 1:33:36people could make happen for a long period of time.
- 1:33:42Just eat your broccoli, kids. That's it.
- 1:33:44Broccoli sprouts, as I was told. Oh, can I give a quick little
- 1:33:49shout out? So on my on the flight home, I
- 1:33:54was just passed like immigration in Dublin or you show your
- 1:33:56passport to the people. And then this woman came up to
- 1:33:59me and said, oh, and so now listen to your podcast.
- 1:34:03So she I said Elizabeth Maher and she also ran Savage Race.
- 1:34:09And so, yeah, first time I've ever noticed from the podcast,
- 1:34:12which is it's pretty cool. Yeah, very cool.
- 1:34:20I'm not sure if you run a PB, but she was happy with our
- 1:34:22result. And I'll just check here now.
- 1:34:25Well. Thanks for listening.
- 1:34:27Yeah. It goes hand in hand with your
- 1:34:29newspaper articles becoming quite the big deal over there in
- 1:34:33Ireland. I tell you, I didn't think we'd
- 1:34:35get him on. Legit thought we might have lost
- 1:34:38him. But thanks for making the time
- 1:34:41on. She actually, she ran with front
- 1:34:42runner. No, Yeah, she cut Josh used to
- 1:34:46culture and she's home 2 1/2 years now.
- 1:34:50So yeah, she she she's on the West Coast for a while.
- 1:34:55Oh. Brilliant.
- 1:34:59I've been doing some reflecting actually on on the back of how
- 1:35:03happy I was for you to run your sub 30 Owen.
- 1:35:06I was like, well, now we've got a sub 30 minute 10K guy.
- 1:35:10Dean's obviously the marathon man with his 217.
- 1:35:14So maybe my return to run, I'm just going to move to
- 1:35:17Steeplechase because that's one thing you just won't get me at.
- 1:35:22I did see her. I did see an Instagram picture
- 1:35:24of you this week, Ryan. I can't remember where you were,
- 1:35:28but those legs are for days, aren't they?
- 1:35:31So you'd have us covered over the staple.
- 1:35:33I need a frozby flop just to get over the staple.
- 1:35:37Yeah, maybe I'll have to. I'll have to hit Evan back up
- 1:35:40and see what he thinks. My featuring in in the staple.
- 1:35:44I like it. Oh, just lastly though, before
- 1:35:48we fully move away from Valencia and the results, the the like
- 1:35:52the Brits that were coming over the line.
- 1:35:54I know Joe equalled the the record, but he's beat Alfie
- 1:35:58Mantor by two seconds. So it was almost his.
- 1:36:01Scott BC was a further one second back, so it was also
- 1:36:05almost his. And then Andy Butcher making his
- 1:36:09like proper comeback was 5 seconds back.
- 1:36:13He ran a Scottish record himself.
- 1:36:16So yeah, although he's equaled the record that based on that, I
- 1:36:20don't think it's going to remain 2738 for a while anyway.
- 1:36:25And he did say in his interview, Joe, like, oh, I was running
- 1:36:29with Scott and about two miles to go, Scott like proper made
- 1:36:33the move and I waited. And about 5 seconds later I
- 1:36:37decided to go and try and cover it.
- 1:36:40And he said that almost ruined the race.
- 1:36:42But thankfully I like kind of settled back in and let him go.
- 1:36:45So bit of an interesting insight really.
- 1:36:50Yeah, it looks the whole thing looked phenomenal.
- 1:36:53Very cool. Very cool race.
- 1:36:54A very cool weekend. You know, like fast half in the
- 1:36:59US world cross and yeah, ripping half in Valencia is very good,
- 1:37:05very spoilt. We were in running news.
- 1:37:09It probably wouldn't be a segment of running news without
- 1:37:11a doping scandal. So Kenyan athlete Albert Korea,
- 1:37:17who is a former winner of the New York City Marathon and
- 1:37:22notably for this recap, has also won the Houston Marathon amongst
- 1:37:27various others. Was has been provisionally
- 1:37:31suspended for the presence of a prohibited substance with the
- 1:37:36acronym Cera, Sarah, which I understand is a drug that's been
- 1:37:43manufactured more to help with I think kidney disease, but it has
- 1:37:48the effect of increasing red blood cell production.
- 1:37:52So like I think like a form of EPO or something EPO related.
- 1:37:56So yeah, Now the Kenyan marathoner that's been popped,
- 1:38:02by the looks of things otherwise.
- 1:38:05I didn't bite the dust. That's it.
- 1:38:07I've I've kept news pretty light only because I know we've this
- 1:38:12is otherwise a very big episode, but training weeks.
- 1:38:16Oh, and I know we've mentioned your training week.
- 1:38:19Ryan, did you have anything, anything to recap on, on your
- 1:38:22end or you you've just been living it up?
- 1:38:26No, maybe just a sentence. Obviously last week I was pretty
- 1:38:29apprehensive as to how I would keep my training going.
- 1:38:33But yeah, I've managed to take a long, I've done my run every
- 1:38:37other day up to 35 minutes uninterrupted today and that was
- 1:38:41lovely to be back running around the Tan and Albert Park.
- 1:38:45I put on Strava Melbourne nostalgia because, yeah, plenty
- 1:38:49of nostalgic feelings running around there and there was a
- 1:38:52nice cool fresh feeling to the air which Dean you would be very
- 1:38:58familiar with at the minute. So yeah, it was nice.
- 1:39:01Perfect running conditions in Melbourne today.
- 1:39:05And how's the foot pulling up from them feeling?
- 1:39:07Not too bad. Yeah, not too bad, a little bit
- 1:39:10sore, but I think that's I'm a mate or back me up.
- 1:39:15We've been doing about 35,000 steps each day so that might be
- 1:39:19playing a part as well. So I've walked them into about 5
- 1:39:23blisters. He's he's not very happy with
- 1:39:25me. Did you?
- 1:39:29You're not even like flip flops or whatever you call them, are
- 1:39:32you? Sliders.
- 1:39:34No, no, I've got my, what is it, the vomero Plus, which thanks to
- 1:39:41the tan, my white vomero plus and I'm looking full of dust
- 1:39:46after like one week wearing them.
- 1:39:50But getting the runs in which is a good another step in the right
- 1:39:53direction, right? But yeah, taken taken along
- 1:39:55nicely and there was even a gym in the hotel in Sydney, so I
- 1:39:58managed to get to gym sessions in this week, which is more than
- 1:40:02a more than a pretty normal week.
- 1:40:03So every cloud. Very good.
- 1:40:08I bought a pair of Romeo plus I caved.
- 1:40:12I got a few messages actually saying how good they are.
- 1:40:16You on board though and have you not wore them yet?
- 1:40:18I haven't worn them yet. I sort of I sort of actually
- 1:40:21went crazy. I bought 3 pairs.
- 1:40:23Hope my parents don't listen first, but I bought 3.
- 1:40:25I bought that I want. To get in Valencia.
- 1:40:30I bought the evil SLS and I bought the PM of velocity fours
- 1:40:36again and just for type of training.
- 1:40:38I do, I feel like them. So the evil SL and then PM are
- 1:40:42ones I just called because you can like pick up the pace and
- 1:40:45I'm a nice little bit. So I'm, yeah, I, I'm broke.
- 1:40:51And then you still trending upwards.
- 1:40:53Yeah, I ran 120 KS this week, so a little bit up from last week.
- 1:40:58No cycling. I was struck down with with man
- 1:41:01flu during the week. So it meant that I just I did
- 1:41:05run every day, not much on one of the days when I was feeling a
- 1:41:08bit rough, but it included a longer run.
- 1:41:12So 90 minutes on Sunday and a couple of like moderate
- 1:41:17treadmill workouts just at 16 or 17 K's an hour on the treadmill,
- 1:41:22just three by 8 minutes with two-minute jog in between.
- 1:41:26Yeah, it's the best. It's felt like, no, I'm not
- 1:41:28really in any discomfort or it's if it is, it's, I don't know,
- 1:41:33very minor if I if like, I'm just very conscious of the area.
- 1:41:37So yeah, things are, things are looking good.
- 1:41:41I'm getting I'm just careful not to irritate the joint.
- 1:41:46So I'm just as I'm increasing the pace, the treadmills being
- 1:41:49good because I can adjust, I can be careful in how much I'm
- 1:41:51increasing the the velocity by. But yeah, it feels, feels good.
- 1:41:56I don't think I'm too far away from doing some proper training,
- 1:41:59which is which is exciting. But I think at the minute just
- 1:42:03nudging up what I'm doing, it currently feels pretty good.
- 1:42:07So yeah, just keep the return return going, keep guilty.
- 1:42:15Yeah, almost at a point where we can, Well not me, but you can
- 1:42:19drop the return to run like injury style recaps and do full
- 1:42:25training week recaps. Yeah, it's getting to the point
- 1:42:28where I'm starting to reintroduce some quality doing a
- 1:42:31long run. It's sort of much more of a
- 1:42:32conventional week of training, which is nice.
- 1:42:34So it feels fun. I'm loving it.
- 1:42:37But yeah, like in the last three or four weeks in terms of it's
- 1:42:41been pretty, it's been a pretty dramatic shift in terms of how
- 1:42:45much more pleasant running's become, which has been nice.
- 1:42:49And the heart rates kind of the haven and stuff now, I think it
- 1:42:53looks pretty good. Look, when I see once I actually
- 1:42:56do mean put some quality in there, I'll be interested.
- 1:43:00But in terms of aerobic clay, what my heart rate's doing
- 1:43:03compared to what it used to do is not too different.
- 1:43:05So yeah, like it's not, I'm not incredibly unfit, which is nice
- 1:43:12so, but time will tell. I've not done any workouts in
- 1:43:17four months so I've got to give myself some time once I get back
- 1:43:20training to see where things fall, but I'll just be looking
- 1:43:24forward to training if I'm honest.
- 1:43:27So big lad's holiday, Valencia next year.
- 1:43:31Man, that would be nice, actually.
- 1:43:34Possible, definitely possible. We floated early houses
- 1:43:39listening so well, we'll listen so.
- 1:43:42Bring the kids. Bring the kids, Why not?
- 1:43:46We need the reunion at some point like.
- 1:43:50Would you go to Japan, Owen, or how far is Japan from Ireland or
- 1:43:55it's a bit of a pain in the. Ass when you got when you got to
- 1:43:58have Japan. I'm not sure how far Japan is,
- 1:44:03but I did like Japan before. Do a little holiday.
- 1:44:08I definitely could get one stop the three amigos would board a
- 1:44:12plane to I'd survive 8 hours with them. 21 up.
- 1:44:15Could be I might lose Austin out the back of it.
- 1:44:22Maybe if we hit Jacob and we we got a run to Japan X easy double
- 1:44:28in live in Japan, that would be justification.
- 1:44:34That'll get it done. That would be spicy.
- 1:44:38All right, YouTube Diaries, I thought first of all, just to
- 1:44:43comment, I'm putting aside, I guess for us Aussies that we're
- 1:44:46able to stream it without issue and download the replay.
- 1:44:50World Athletics posting a free live stream, I thought was very
- 1:44:52good. So I just and the the quality of
- 1:44:56the coverage I thought was very good, which segues into my
- 1:45:00YouTube Diaries. As I mentioned before, World
- 1:45:03Athletics have these 45 minute to 60 minute highlight packages
- 1:45:07of all the world cross countries over time.
- 1:45:08They don't go as far back to the 80s.
- 1:45:12And so I give an honourable mention, not to the World
- 1:45:15Athletics YouTube page, but to Wayne Middlestead is his name.
- 1:45:19I think he might be Auk guy, but he's uploaded onto his YouTube
- 1:45:23channel. This is when you start trawling
- 1:45:25through the the archives. But he's got a heap of really
- 1:45:28good races in there and a lot of them are these old like 80s
- 1:45:30British races. And it's just cool because you
- 1:45:33got the likes of, you know, like John Tracy and like a heap of
- 1:45:38these British lads that were just the top of them.
- 1:45:40Whoa, whoa, whoa. John Tracy, not British.
- 1:45:45No, no, no. And and British lads, no, no.
- 1:45:47John Tracy is Irish. Right.
- 1:45:49I, I, I mentioned John Tracy for you, but but no, yeah, but some
- 1:45:53of these early like races like I think the world cross was like
- 1:45:57in the world Cross highlights packages are from like the 1990s
- 1:46:01so. But if you want to get into
- 1:46:02earlier ones, jump on his YouTube channel and you should
- 1:46:04be able to find them. But it's just cool.
- 1:46:07It's, it's good watching like I know for for me, like 1992, like
- 1:46:12Mona, I think finished 6th or 5th in the world cross race.
- 1:46:18They were talking about Ailish Mccolgan's mum in that race, in
- 1:46:24the women's senior race in the 1992 one, which was she actually
- 1:46:28finished a bit further back, but she was talking about, they were
- 1:46:31talking about her as one to watch because she finished third
- 1:46:33the year before in like 91 and she was four months postpartum,
- 1:46:37which I assume was with Eilish. So she her mum is it Liz was
- 1:46:44very, very good. So like, and then in the like in
- 1:46:48the junior race, the winner of the women's junior race was
- 1:46:51Paula Radcliffe in 92. And then in the men's race, the
- 1:46:55runner up was his name. I think in the the commentator
- 1:47:00was just saying Selesi, but it was highly Gabra Selesi, but
- 1:47:03before he was a household name. So it's just cool to go back in
- 1:47:07time and watch some of these races and you realize just how
- 1:47:09good these guys like all the stars that you know, people that
- 1:47:13became stars. And I just think world cross
- 1:47:17country back in the day was everyone rocked up to it.
- 1:47:19It was a cross section of all the top track runners, Rd.
- 1:47:23runners, and they all came and duped it out and it was really
- 1:47:25cool. So that's my YouTube Diaries.
- 1:47:29Yeah, going back and looking at all them people with hindsight
- 1:47:33when they were nothing but well, they hadn't achieved anything.
- 1:47:36But knowing what they go on to achieve and looking at them in
- 1:47:40that environment is pretty cool. I'll have to make make sure I
- 1:47:44tag the guy who you're referring to who's they'll get all else
- 1:47:48and they can put it in like the caption or whatever.
- 1:47:52And then Double trouble guys, we end on a Double trouble.
- 1:47:55Did you you guys have one? Otherwise I can go.
- 1:48:00A senior one in the notes is quite good to be fair.
- 1:48:05Yeah. So my double trouble is just
- 1:48:07there's a lot of talk about good shoes and I just don't think
- 1:48:11people are talking about bad ones.
- 1:48:13And at the risk of putting more people and brands offside, I
- 1:48:16just thought I'd mentioned some that I really did choose that I
- 1:48:19don't like and I'm going to butcher the models and brands,
- 1:48:23but I'm hoping, oh, and you might be able to close the gap
- 1:48:25for me on these. But so I'll start with the
- 1:48:32Adidas Evo SL. I know a lot of people like it,
- 1:48:37but I just find it's really narrow.
- 1:48:39See what you think on, But it's really, I think it's narrow in
- 1:48:41the midfoot and I just feel like I collapse a little bit one way
- 1:48:44or the other with it. Like I just struggle.
- 1:48:46It's a bit like, like I feel like a bit like an ugly step
- 1:48:51sister when I put that shoe on. I just don't feel like I can hit
- 1:48:53it that well. So it's a no for you.
- 1:48:57So it's a no for me and no one's called it out and I've worn it
- 1:49:00so many times, but I still feel the same.
- 1:49:02And I actually went for a run, bumped into a mate and he said
- 1:49:04the same thing. And I thought, you know what,
- 1:49:06I'm gonna it's enough for me. Two people not liking it is
- 1:49:09enough for me to call it out. And then I'll call out the
- 1:49:13Mizuno. Is it the Neo Vista?
- 1:49:15You know the really soft plush. Yeah, too flush.
- 1:49:20Like I just find, I reckon I'm going to my cards hurt after
- 1:49:23that shoe again. It feels too spongy and
- 1:49:26collapsible. I don't like, I love a soft
- 1:49:29shoe, but I love a soft stable shoe.
- 1:49:32So I feel like like the Nike Invincible, you know, the Nike
- 1:49:35Invincible goes all the way outside your foot and just feels
- 1:49:38really stable. It's the same with like a super
- 1:49:40blast or something. I don't feel like I'm having to
- 1:49:42stabilize anything. The shoe feels like it's doing
- 1:49:45it. Where is that Neo Vista?
- 1:49:47Not enough and then same with I got a pair of the is it sulcone?
- 1:49:53One of their super shoes and I can't remember.
- 1:49:58The the one that people love. People love at dolphin speed.
- 1:50:01Yeah, I think so. I've got, I've literally got
- 1:50:04them in there. I've done one workout in them.
- 1:50:06They feel too soft, like I feel like I'm about to ping my calf
- 1:50:09in them because I'm bottoming the shoe out.
- 1:50:11Don't like them? Because I think the first
- 1:50:15version of that was loved by someone, or the third.
- 1:50:18It's going to be 3. You've the 14, dear.
- 1:50:23I got it literally as a like a seating pair ahead of Ballarat.
- 1:50:27So this is what would have been in April.
- 1:50:29Is this when you've done the photo shoot?
- 1:50:31Yeah, we are model. That's me, but what show is
- 1:50:37that? Don't like it?
- 1:50:39I think it's the Endorphin pro. Endorphin Pro 4.
- 1:50:44Yeah, yeah, not a fan. So anyway, I just thought people
- 1:50:49should start talking about shoes that are just are no good
- 1:50:52because people people might want to know that as much as they
- 1:50:56want to know which ones are good.
- 1:50:58People are paid a bag to freaking say they're good even
- 1:51:00when they're shit. Yeah.
- 1:51:02Well, that's the problem in it. We need like like the official
- 1:51:05Marathon time integrity unit. You need the genuine independent
- 1:51:09board or panel who will review the issues, who don't have a
- 1:51:13frigging hidden agenda because everyone who's talking about
- 1:51:16shoes either represent the brand in one way or another.
- 1:51:21So obviously they're trying to encourage you to buy them or
- 1:51:24they have their own shoe shop, so they're encouraging you to
- 1:51:27buy them because they've fucking invested a lot of capital into a
- 1:51:32Nike Vapour Fly Free or whatever it may be.
- 1:51:34So obviously then their agenda is that they want to shift all
- 1:51:37these so you don't hear about the fact that they're bad until
- 1:51:42it's too late and you've already bought a pen, tried it and found
- 1:51:44it out yourself. Any shoes that you guys have
- 1:51:47tried that you're not that happy with?
- 1:51:52I wasn't the biggest fan of the uncladed monster hyper.
- 1:51:56It was I've been pretty lucky. Well, touch what I might might
- 1:52:00like that evil I sell now. But the shoes I've bought, Oh
- 1:52:04actually I'm the ASIC Nova Blast Five.
- 1:52:06I felt that was too soft and I don't yeah, I don't like a soft
- 1:52:12shoot that much. So on Clay Monster, Hyper and
- 1:52:16the normal Blast five were the two I didn't really like the
- 1:52:20best. Yeah, I think anything that's
- 1:52:23too soft I'm just not a huge fan of.
- 1:52:25Like it needs to be snappy, you know, I think.
- 1:52:30Yeah, snappy, but supportive. That sort of I'm I'm about.
- 1:52:36I remember on one of those shop runs I tried on a pair of the
- 1:52:41ASIC Sky Tokyo MY. I can't remember which iteration
- 1:52:46it was, but at the time I'd only ever been like racing in the
- 1:52:50Alpha Flight 3. And maybe I'm biased because I'm
- 1:52:53just so used to how that feels, but I remember just thinking in
- 1:52:59comparison to the Alpha Flight didn't feel like a super shoe.
- 1:53:03Like it should have just been a super trainer or something to
- 1:53:06step down. Like it just didn't feel like it
- 1:53:09gave me as anywhere near as much as the Alpha fly.
- 1:53:14And actually that's the shoes I wore at the weekend, the Puma
- 1:53:17fast or three. I really like diamonds and like
- 1:53:23I've only ever tried the ASIC meta speed plus.
- 1:53:27So I think was there like second iteration of that and the New
- 1:53:33Balance. Oh, that's not on that.
- 1:53:34Didn't really get on with the New Balance and super comfy for
- 1:53:38didn't race long on that one. Away for training now, but I
- 1:53:41wouldn't wear it for racing, even though it would suit
- 1:53:44majority. If it's got such a white toe
- 1:53:46box, it's like A and then it's got such a white service area.
- 1:53:49It would suit a lot of like runners and I just didn't really
- 1:53:53like it that much. I just didn't feel I had a pair
- 1:53:56of them. I just didn't feel like I've got
- 1:53:57as much return out of them, you know, like they feel good, like
- 1:54:01for a steady run, tempo run. But if you're talking about a
- 1:54:05true performance shoe, I didn't feel like I got enough, you
- 1:54:07know, enough back. Bang for your buck?
- 1:54:10Yeah, you know what, They're being honest.
- 1:54:14Like, I can probably recognize if in the past I've bought a
- 1:54:18shoe, and obviously I've paid my own cash to get the shoe, I will
- 1:54:22often for a while convince myself that I do like it, even
- 1:54:27though I may not like it. You know, because you like
- 1:54:30wanting to almost justify the investment that you've made.
- 1:54:33And then after a month or so you'll finally give up on it and
- 1:54:36be like, yeah, OK, it is a bit crap, isn't it?
- 1:54:40And they are so expensive. You want them to, you want to
- 1:54:43try and like like them as much as like if you're giving them
- 1:54:46Willy nilly, I think I'd be more ruthless.
- 1:54:50But like, you want to like them because you're spending money on
- 1:54:52them. We still find a way like they
- 1:54:54just drop down in your rotation and you just run trash
- 1:54:57kilometres in them to try and use them up.
- 1:54:59I think, well, that's that's what I sometimes do.
- 1:55:03It's funny, right? This is this ties in so because
- 1:55:06I used to live in Melbourne here, I had a load of stuff
- 1:55:09stored at one of my friends and I just picked it up often before
- 1:55:13and there's a pair of alpha fly twos in it.
- 1:55:16So I've just I've just whacked them on Facebook marketplace for
- 1:55:19$50. First first come, first get.
- 1:55:23So we'll see if I get rid of them by this time tomorrow
- 1:55:26because no one really liked the off flight 2 that they they were
- 1:55:29a bit slappy. I think the chogi did kept chogi
- 1:55:33like them. I think that's what this is your
- 1:55:35choice. Yeah, after everyone backed them
- 1:55:39out, he then started wearing them again.
- 1:55:41Yeah. I thought you for a second you
- 1:55:44were going to say you grabbed them out and then put them on
- 1:55:47for you for your run. I've allowed bingo.
- 1:55:52All. Right.
- 1:55:53I think that's us. Hey.
- 1:55:56That is a wrap guys. Yeah.
- 1:55:58Thanks, host. Very good job.
- 1:56:01Pleasure, pleasure. Thanks very much for making the
- 1:56:04time fellas. Great to chat and yeah, special
- 1:56:07episode on congratulations again.
- 1:56:09I think we're it's been a fun speak on behalf of Ryan and I
- 1:56:14and the listeners. It's been good.
- 1:56:15You know, you've been front and center in terms of giving some
- 1:56:18insight into your training and it's been really fun to to
- 1:56:21follow along and it was a nice this has been great reward for
- 1:56:24effort so well enough. Thank you very much guys.
- 1:56:27And Next up is going to be a place a little less sunny than
- 1:56:31Valencia, but a little closer to home and just as fast for a 5K
- 1:56:38in. So that's the next.
- 1:56:41That's the next one. Man, and if we weren't, if I
- 1:56:45wasn't excited by what you see on the stream in terms of people
- 1:56:47flooding through in Valencia, like I don't know if anyone's
- 1:56:50watched the YouTube stream of these of this race, but it's
- 1:56:52pretty cool, hey. Yeah, it's not again.
- 1:56:55So yeah, we'll give that a bash. Hopefully my ankle comes good
- 1:56:59going physio tonight, so just get that sorted and then pick it
- 1:57:03up again. Good luck.
- 1:57:05Yeah, Congratulations, Owen. Fantastic.
- 1:57:09Cheers boys, catch you next week.
- 1:57:11See you guys. Bye.
- 1:57:12Good luck.
