- 0:04Good morning. This is the Sacramento Brief, your
- 0:08weekday roundup of overnight headlines and what's
- 0:11ahead across the city. I'm Carol. It's Monday,
- 0:16August 3rd, 2026. Let's get you caught up. A
- 0:21tense weekend in Sacramento saw multiple dangerous
- 0:23incidents unfold, beginning in downtown. A man
- 0:27is under arrest after police say he barricaded
- 0:29himself inside an apartment following a stabbing
- 0:32early Saturday morning. Just before 12 .45 a
- 0:34.m., Sacramento police responded to an apartment
- 0:36complex in the 1100 block of 9th Street, where
- 0:40officers found a woman suffering from a minor
- 0:42stab wound. She was taken to a local hospital
- 0:44and is expected to recover. Police say the suspect
- 0:48refused to come out of his apartment, leading
- 0:50to a four -hour standoff around 4 .45 a .m. on
- 0:53Saturday. Officers forced their way inside and
- 0:57arrested him. During the apprehension, the suspect
- 0:59was bitten by a canine from a neighboring law
- 1:02enforcement agency and was treated at a local
- 1:05hospital before being booked into jail. Investigators
- 1:09say the woman was visiting another resident in
- 1:11the building. That resident had had an ongoing
- 1:15feud with the suspect. The investigation remains
- 1:19active. And a few short miles away on Friday
- 1:23morning, a dangerous escalation into an officer
- 1:26-involved shooting in the La Riviera area. According
- 1:30to Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, deputies
- 1:32were first called Friday morning after a man
- 1:34reportedly burglarized a vehicle and threatened
- 1:37the owner with a knife before fleeing. About
- 1:40an hour later, deputies received another call,
- 1:42this time from a homeowner on Mackinac Way. who
- 1:47had walked in on the same suspect inside his
- 1:50home. Investigators say the suspect had stolen
- 1:53the homeowner's firearm and repeatedly pointed
- 1:57it at the victim's head while threatening to
- 1:59kill him. The homeowner managed to escape unharmed
- 2:02and call 911. The suspect fled on the homeowner's
- 2:06bicycle, still armed with the stolen firearm.
- 2:09Deputies located him a short time later and gave
- 2:11chase through the neighborhood. The pursuit ended
- 2:13near a fenced parking lot. where investigators
- 2:17say the suspect turned towards the deputies and
- 2:19raised the handguns despite repeated demands
- 2:23to drop it. One deputy fired, striking the suspect.
- 2:27Deputies immediately began life -saving measures
- 2:29until paramedics arrived. The suspect underwent
- 2:32surgery and is now reported to be in stable condition.
- 2:36Authorities say both victims appear to have been
- 2:38chosen at random. The deputy involved has been
- 2:42placed on administrative leave while the Sacramento
- 2:44County Sheriff's and the District Attorney's
- 2:46Office conduct the standard independent investigations.
- 2:49And finally, a heartbreaking update to a story

- 4:36Shelter is reminding pet owners that extreme
- 4:39heat can quickly become life -threatening for
- 4:41dogs and cats. Never leave your pet inside a
- 4:44parked vehicle, even for just a few minutes.
- 4:47An interior temperature can rise rapidly. Make
- 4:50sure pets always have access to fresh water,
- 4:53shade, and air conditioning. And save those walks
- 4:58for early morning or late evening. A simple test
- 5:01before heading out. Place the back of your hand
- 5:03on the pavement for a few seconds. If it's too
- 5:06hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's
- 5:08paws. Watch for signs of heat stroke, including
- 5:11heavy panting, excessive drooling, vomiting,
- 5:14weakness, difficulty walking, seizures, or collapse.
- 5:18If you suspect heat stroke, move your pet to
- 5:20a cool area. Apply cool, not ice cold, wet towels
- 5:25to head, neck, chest, and offer small amounts
- 5:28of water. Seek veterinary care immediately. If
- 5:32you see an animal without adequate shade or water,
- 5:34you can report it through the Sacramento 311.
