- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Ah, thanks for having me.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I'm glad to be back.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, you bet.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: You know, last time you were here, you talked about health and fitness with a twist for little ones, which is episode number 140 for those of those of you who'd like to listen.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: And now you're going to provide tips for spiritual health and growth, which I love.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Um, obviously, prayer and Bible memorization is so important for us adults and certainly for our kids and grandkids.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: So please jump right in and share what you have today.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Well, as I shared uh before, I really believe that prayer and Bible study are to the spirit, what exercise and healthy eating are to the body.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: So um learning how to pray and and what to pray and learning how to study the Bible are very important things, and and there are some strategies that you can use to help to memorize, do some Bible memory and read the Bible.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: So um I've had some experience working as a teacher, and I took some courses, and I learned at that time that there are very different learning styles for children and adults.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And um there's there's a number of different ones, including there's visual learners, those what those who like to see images, and there's auditory learners, those who like to to hear it, you know, words spoken, and verbal learners who who like to like myself who like to write and see their words, and then there's uh you know, tactile learners, those who learn by doing.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: So when it comes to Bible study, I used to just focus, you know, on the writing of it, but there are other ways to to remember Bible verses.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And so one the first one that I always suggest is writing it out because that is my top thing, and most people are familiar with that.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: So writing out a verse like five times in a row, and this works a number of your areas of your brain to help you to remember, and I won't get into the details of that because we don't have time.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Um, the second way to learn it is to say the verse out loud.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: So, again, some of us, you know, we're able to learn in an in a number of different styles.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: We have a prominent one, but there's other ways.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: So to saying it out out loud helps to move it into your long-term memory.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: So you're writing it and then you are saying the verse out loud throughout the day.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: And the third one is a really fun one that I like is to draw the verse.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Now, I cannot draw myself out of a wet paper bag, but it's a lot of fun to try and draw the verse and come up with some images, and again, it helps you to process it in different ways.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: Then the fourth one is to record yourself saying the verse and listening to it.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: So again, this helps to bring back the verse to your mind faster.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: So it does the listening part of it, you know, the auditory, but it also it's your own voice and you're saying it.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: So it kind of combines those two together.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And the fourth way to learn is to act out the verse.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: This is one uh my granddaughter especially loved to do, and I actually videoed her and put it on my YouTube channel because it was so cute, but it helps your whole body to remember the verses.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: So those are the five ways that I I recommend to make Bible memory easier is to write out the verse five times, to say the verse out loud throughout the day, to draw the verse, to record yourself saying the verse and listening to it, and finally to act out the verse.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: And if you do Bible memory in those five different ways, it will be much easier for you to capture and to learn and to hold God's word in your heart.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And I can see those too, especially the drawing and the acting out, more appealing to kids as well, you know, because it gets other parts of, like you say, whole body and um a creative brain connecting with the Bible.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: So those are great.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: I've enjoyed doing them myself and I've enjoyed doing them with my granddaughter.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: Now, when it comes to prayer, um, some some people are uh familiar with the acts model, adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and supplication.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: But again, when dealing with children, those are pretty big words.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: Like I don't even understand them.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: So um I've simplified it, and I I do this with my granddaughter again when when she's at my home, and we do what we call the path to prayer.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: And we follow the path model, which is P stands for praise, A is admit, T is thank, and H is help.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: So the the P we start with praise, and we start with giving God praise.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: So it takes the focus off of why we're um praying and and puts it on the one who we're praying to.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: So the way that I explain it to my granddaughter is we're we're we are giving thanks to God for who he is, not just for what he gives us.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: So we start out with praise, and then the second one is admit.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: And this is where we we tell God and we ask forgiveness for things that we've said, that we've thought, and that we did that were wrong.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: So, you know, the this one's a little more challenging, um, you know, to think about things.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, what did I do wrong today?
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I do allow my granddaughter to to, she's asked, can I say it in my head, you know, and God can hear you there.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: You don't have to confess to me, you know, but at the same time, you know, as long as she's giving, you know, thought to things that she've said, thought, or done that were wrong, and asking God for his forgiveness.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: As we all do, then we move on to thanking and um, you know, just thanking God for for what we're grateful for and and not holding back, you know, thank you for for this great supper that we had tonight and that we got to get out on the bicycle today, or you know, thank you for the time spent at uh omanopa's, or you know, anything like that.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: All the things that we're thankful to God for.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: I remember reading a meme once that said, What if tomorrow you were only given what you were thankful for today?
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And um, I thought that was pretty powerful.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: The last one is H and it's help.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: So this is where we bring our needs to God in prayer.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: This is where we ask for um, you know, what we want from God.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: And and I I let her know that nothing is too big or too small for God.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: So, you know, just oh, that I won't fight with my, you know, my best friend, you know, all the way up to, you know, can you bring healing for cancer for an uncle?
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: You know, that sort of thing.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: So the path model then is for her to kind of get a well-rounded prayer instead of always saying praise or always saying thanks or always asking for stuff, um, to take it, you know, in a well-rounded path of praise, admit, thank, and help.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Well, fantastic tips as usual, Kimberly.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for being here and sharing.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: And listeners, be sure to check the show notes for links to Kimberly's website, to her books, and um also to other resources that we've discussed today.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: I'll probably recap this and put it in the show notes so it'll be easy for you to remember.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Um, but again, thank you, Kimberly, for being here and sharing with our listeners.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: And be sure to come back next week for another episode of Five Minute Parenting.
