- 0:08True feminism, more options,
- 0:10more ownership, more freedom
- 0:16Welcome to the Financial Feminism
- 0:18Podcast, where we're changing the
- 0:21conversation about money, ownership,
- 0:25and what it means for women to build
- 0:27lasting wealth I'm Dr. Taneka Bruce,
- 0:31and I'm so glad that you're here.
- 0:33Before we begin, I want
- 0:34you to know something.
- 0:36This podcast isn't about telling
- 0:38you to skip your morning coffee.
- 0:40It's not about making you feel guilty
- 0:42because you bought something nice
- 0:44for yourself, and it's definitely
- 0:46not about pretending that if you just
- 0:49worked a little harder, everything
- 0:51would magically fall into place.
- 0:54This is about something much deeper.
- 0:56This is about understanding why
- 0:58so many intelligent, capable,
- 1:01hardworking women still feel like
- 1:03there's always something else.
- 1:06They're always trying
- 1:07to catch up financially.
- 1:10If you've ever looked at your bank account
- 1:11and wondered, "Where did it all go?"
- 1:14If you've ever thought, "I make good
- 1:16money, so why does financial freedom
- 1:19still feel so far away?" Or maybe you've
- 1:21asked yourself, "Why does it seem like
- 1:24everyone else figured this out except me?"
- 1:28Then I want you to hear me clearly.
- 1:30You are not alone, and more
- 1:33importantly, you're not the problem.
- 1:36Today, we're starting a conversation
- 1:38that I wish someone had started
- 1:40with us years ago because I don't
- 1:43believe women have a money problem.
- 1:45I believe we've inherited a
- 1:47system that taught us how to earn
- 1:49money, but not how to own it.
- 1:53Those are two very different things.
- 1:55And when I was growing up, I heard a
- 1:57lot of advice: study hard, get good
- 2:00grades, find a stable career, work
- 2:03hard, save your money, be responsible.
- 2:06You know, none of that advice
- 2:07was wrong, but looking back, I
- 2:09realize something was missing.
- 2:13No one taught me how
- 2:15wealth is actually created.
- 2:18No one explained the difference between
- 2:20having a paycheck and owning an asset.
- 2:24No one told me that working
- 2:26harder eventually reaches a
- 2:28limit, and no one explained that
- 2:30ownership changes everything.
- 2:33And for years, I believed that
- 2:35if I simply kept doing more, I'd
- 2:38eventually feel financially secure.
- 2:41So I earned more degrees, worked
- 2:44more shifts, accepted more
- 2:47responsibility, started more
- 2:50projects, and built more businesses.
- 2:52Yet something just kept bothering me.
- 2:55And I met women who earned less than
- 2:58I did, but had more financial freedom.
- 3:02And I met women who worked fewer
- 3:04hours, but seemed less stressed.
- 3:07I met women who had built businesses
- 3:10that continued making money while they
- 3:12slept, and that's when I realized income
- 3:16and wealth are not the same thing.
- 3:19Being busy isn't the same as being free.
- 3:23And working hard isn't the
- 3:24same as building ownership.
- 3:27That realization changed
- 3:29everything for me.
- 3:31Now, here's the question I
- 3:32want you to think about today.
- 3:34What if the reason money has
- 3:36always felt difficult isn't
- 3:39because you're bad with money?
- 3:42What if no one taught you
- 3:44the rules of the game?
- 3:47Imagine trying to play a sport
- 3:49that you've never seen before.
- 3:51You know, everyone else around seems
- 3:53to know where to stand, where to go.
- 3:55They know the rules, they
- 3:57know the strategy, and you're
- 3:59just trying to keep up.
- 4:02That's how many women feel about money.
- 4:05Not because we're incapable, but because
- 4:10we were never handed the playbook,
- 4:13and that's what this podcast is about.
- 4:16Not shame, not guilt, not judgment
- 4:23Education, ownership, freedom,
- 4:27and building something that lasts.
- 4:29Have you ever noticed how differently we
- 4:32teach women and men to think about money?
- 4:35From the time we're little girls,
- 4:37many of us hear things like, "Be
- 4:39careful," "Don't ask for too much,"
- 4:43"Be grateful with what you have," and,
- 4:46"Don't make people feel uncomfortable,"
- 4:49and, "Don't talk about money."
- 4:51Right?
- 4:52And somewhere along the way, we
- 4:54learned that being responsible
- 4:56meant being quiet, being generous,
- 5:01putting everyone else first, working
- 5:05hard and hoping someone noticed.
- 5:07Now, let me be clear.
- 5:10There's absolutely nothing wrong
- 5:12with generosity, and there's
- 5:14nothing wrong with serving others.
- 5:16There's nothing wrong with humility.
- 5:19But generosity without ownership
- 5:22eventually becomes exhaustion.
- 5:26Service without sustainability
- 5:28eventually becomes sacrifice.
- 5:31And somewhere along the
- 5:33way, too many women confused
- 5:35financial struggle with virtue.
- 5:39And I know women who would never
- 5:41hesitate to help a friend, women who
- 5:44will buy school supplies for a child
- 5:46that isn't even theirs, women who
- 5:49quietly pay someone else's electric
- 5:51bill, women who give until there's
- 5:55almost nothing left for themselves.
- 5:58These women have beautiful hearts.
- 6:01But here's the question.
- 6:03Who taught those same women
- 6:07that it's okay to build wealth?
- 6:10Who taught them it was okay to own
- 6:13businesses, to invest, to negotiate,
- 6:18to charge what they're worth, to
- 6:21build something that could bless
- 6:23their families for generations?
- 6:26For many women, no one, and that's
- 6:30exactly why financial feminism exists.
- 6:33Not because women don't work hard.
- 6:36We already do.
- 6:37Not because women aren't intelligent.
- 6:40We are.
- 6:41Not because women lack ambition.
- 6:43Look around.
- 6:44Women are leading hospitals,
- 6:47organizations, building companies,
- 6:50running profits, raising families,
- 6:54earning degrees, starting businesses,
- 6:58serving their communities.
- 7:00The issue is not effort.
- 7:03The issue is ownership, and because
- 7:06ownership changes everything
- 7:11Let's think about it another way.
- 7:13Imagine two women.
- 7:16The first woman earns a wonderful salary.
- 7:20She works long hours.
- 7:21She's respected.
- 7:23She's dependable.
- 7:25She receives a paycheck
- 7:26every two weeks, right?
- 7:29And the second woman, she also works hard,
- 7:32but over time she begins building assets.
- 7:37She owns a business.
- 7:39She writes a book.
- 7:41She creates digital products.
- 7:44She invests consistently.
- 7:47She builds systems that continue
- 7:49producing income long after today's
- 7:51work is finished Both women work
- 7:55hard, but only one is gradually
- 7:58separating her income from her time.
- 8:02That's one of the biggest
- 8:03mindset shifts we'll make
- 8:05together throughout this podcast.
- 8:08Our goal isn't simply to
- 8:10earn more, it's to own more.
- 8:13Because every asset you own
- 8:15creates another opportunity,
- 8:19another choice, another option,
- 8:22and options create freedom.
- 8:26And as a nurse, I've spent years
- 8:27around extraordinary women, women
- 8:30who lead departments, women who make
- 8:33life and death decisions, women who
- 8:36solve problems every single day.
- 8:39Yet I've also watched many of
- 8:41those same women hesitate when it
- 8:44comes to investing in themselves.
- 8:46And I've heard things like, "I'll wait
- 8:49till the kids get older," or, "I'll
- 8:51start my business after retirement,"
- 8:54or, "I'll write my book one day.
- 8:56I just don't have the time." And maybe
- 8:59you've said some of those things too.
- 9:01I know I have.
- 9:02But here's what I've learned.
- 9:04There will always be
- 9:06another reason to wait.
- 9:08Another responsibility, definitely
- 9:11another bill, another emergency.
- 9:15If we're always waiting for
- 9:17the perfect moment, ownership
- 9:19stays on tomorrow's calendar.
- 9:22And tomorrow has a way of becoming years.
- 9:26Financial feminism isn't asking
- 9:29you to become something different.
- 9:31It's asking you to stop postponing the
- 9:33woman you're already capable of becoming.
- 9:37This episode is sponsored by Lead Nicely.
- 9:40Lead Nicely helps businesses, brands,
- 9:42conferences, podcasts, ministries, and
- 9:46entrepreneurs grow through strategic
- 9:48marketing, branding, SEO websites,
- 9:51automation, and scalable growth systems.
- 9:54Whether you're building a ministry,
- 9:56launching a conference, starting a
- 9:58business, or expanding your influence,
- 10:00Lead Nicely helps bring vision to life.
- 10:03Lead Nicely, helping brands grow with
- 10:06strategy, creativity, and impact.
- 10:12Let's continue.
- 10:13One of the greatest myths we've accepted
- 10:16is this: if I make more money, all
- 10:19my financial problems will disappear.
- 10:22Sometimes they do, often they
- 10:24don't, because income magnifies
- 10:27habits, it doesn't replace them.
- 10:30And that's why you'll meet people who earn
- 10:32high six figures and still feel trapped.
- 10:36You'll also meet people earning
- 10:37far less that are steadily building
- 10:40wealth because every financial
- 10:42decision moves them towards ownership.
- 10:45Financial feminism isn't about
- 10:47chasing bigger paychecks.
- 10:49It's about making sure every dollar has a
- 10:51purpose, every opportunity has intention,
- 10:56every decision moves you closer to freedom
- 10:59instead of further away, and that's
- 11:01exactly where we're headed together.
- 11:05Now, I wanna challenge a belief today,
- 11:08not because I wanna make anyone feel
- 11:10uncomfortable, but because I believe
- 11:12uncomfortable conversations often
- 11:15lead to the greatest breakthroughs.
- 11:17Now, here's the belief, okay?
- 11:20If I work hard enough, everything
- 11:23will eventually work itself out.
- 11:26Now, that sounds responsible.
- 11:27I mean, it even sounds admirable.
- 11:30But it's also incomplete.
- 11:32Working hard is important.
- 11:35Working with purpose is even better.
- 11:38But working hard without building
- 11:41ownership, it's kinda like, I
- 11:43use this analogy, it's kinda
- 11:45like running on a treadmill.
- 11:47You get stronger, you become faster,
- 11:51but you're still in the same place.
- 11:53You haven't gone anywhere.
- 11:56Have you ever looked back on the last
- 11:58five or 10 years and thought, "Man, I've
- 12:00worked harder than I've ever imagined I
- 12:03could But why doesn't life feel easier?
- 12:08Now, that's not laziness talking,
- 12:10that's exhaustion, and many women are
- 12:13carrying it, not because they failed,
- 12:16because no one challenged the question.
- 12:19For years, we were told, "Work
- 12:21hard, be loyal, save what you
- 12:25can, retire someday." But today's
- 12:29world doesn't reward effort alone.
- 12:32It rewards ownership.
- 12:34The woman who owns the business,
- 12:37the woman who owns the intellectual
- 12:40property, the woman who owns the system,
- 12:44the woman who owns the investments,
- 12:47the woman who owns the assets.
- 12:51Ownership allows your work to continue
- 12:54long after you've stopped working,
- 12:57and that's why financial feminism
- 12:59isn't simply about making more money.
- 13:02It's about changing what
- 13:04your money is building.
- 13:06When I wrote the book She Who
- 13:08Owns the Purse, I wasn't writing
- 13:10another personal finance book.
- 13:14There are already thousands of those
- 13:17Okay?
- 13:18I wanted to start a different
- 13:20conversation, one about ownership,
- 13:23because ownership changes the way
- 13:25you make decisions It changes the
- 13:29opportunities available to your children.
- 13:33It changes how you negotiate, and it
- 13:36changes how you see yourself, ladies.
- 13:39Ownership creates confidence
- 13:42that a paycheck alone never can.
- 13:45Think about that for a moment.
- 13:47Have you ever noticed how differently
- 13:49you feel when you own something?
- 13:52Not borrow it, not rent it, but own it.
- 13:55You care for it differently.
- 13:58You protect it differently.
- 14:00You even invest in it differently.
- 14:03And the same is true
- 14:04with your financial life.
- 14:06When you begin seeing yourself as
- 14:09someone building assets instead of
- 14:11simply paying bills, everything changes.
- 14:16Let's talk about something that doesn't
- 14:18get discussed often enough, okay?
- 14:21Women are incredibly successful,
- 14:25many of them, and they still
- 14:28quietly become anxious.
- 14:33Why?
- 14:34Not because they're incapable, but
- 14:37because they've become financially
- 14:39dependent on one source of income, one
- 14:44employer, one position, one paycheck,
- 14:48and that can feel frightening.
- 14:51Not because the job isn't good,
- 14:54but because we've placed all of
- 14:56our financial security in something
- 14:59we don't completely control.
- 15:03One restructuring, one illness, one
- 15:07organizational change, or one unexpected
- 15:10event, everything shifts, right?
- 15:13And that's why I believe
- 15:14every woman deserves options.
- 15:17Not because everyone should quit
- 15:19their job or everyone should
- 15:21become an entrepreneur tomorrow.
- 15:23No.
- 15:24But because everyone deserves choices.
- 15:28Maybe your business starts with something
- 15:30you work on on just Saturday mornings.
- 15:34Maybe it's a book.
- 15:36Maybe it's consulting.
- 15:39Maybe it's making digital
- 15:41products, or maybe it's coaching,
- 15:43or it's maybe even investing.
- 15:46Whatever it is, maybe it's something
- 15:48you've been thinking about for
- 15:50years, but you haven't given
- 15:52yourself permission to pursue.
- 15:56The point isn't what it is.
- 15:58The point is that you're
- 15:59building something you own Now,
- 16:04I often hear women say this.
- 16:06They say, "I don't know enough."
- 16:09Or they say, "I'm not an expert.
- 16:13Someone's already doing that."
- 16:15Okay, can I lovingly challenge that?
- 16:18You don't need to know everything.
- 16:21You only need to know more
- 16:24than the person you're helping.
- 16:27Every expert started as a beginner.
- 16:30Every expert started
- 16:32just with minimal tools.
- 16:35Every business started with one
- 16:37customer, and every author started
- 16:40with one blank page, one sentence.
- 16:45Every movement started with one
- 16:47conversation, and financial feminism
- 16:50started with one question: What if women
- 16:54were taught ownership before consumption?
- 16:58What if we taught girls how businesses
- 17:01work before they enter the workforce?
- 17:04What if financial confidence became
- 17:07part of everyday conversation instead
- 17:10of something we whispered about
- 17:12after everyone else had gone home?
- 17:15Now, that's the conversation
- 17:17we're starting, and I hope
- 17:19you'll help me continue it.
- 17:21Before we move into today's action step,
- 17:24I wanna leave you with one thought.
- 17:27No one stole your potential.
- 17:30No one stole your intelligence.
- 17:32No one stole your ability to
- 17:34build something meaningful.
- 17:37But many women were never
- 17:39handed the financial playbook.
- 17:41That isn't your fault,
- 17:43it's your opportunity.
- 17:45Because once you understand the rules,
- 17:48you can begin writing a different
- 17:50story, one where ownership replaces
- 17:54fear, one where purpose creates profit,
- 17:59one where your work builds freedom
- 18:01and not just another paycheck, and
- 18:03that's exactly where we're headed next.
- 18:07Before we end today's conversation, I
- 18:09don't want this to become another podcast
- 18:12that you enjoyed but you never applied.
- 18:15Financial feminism is a movement.
- 18:18Movements don't grow
- 18:19because people listen.
- 18:21They grow because people act.
- 18:24So today, I'm asking you
- 18:26to do one simple thing.
- 18:28I want you to answer one question.
- 18:32Who is currently controlling
- 18:34your financial future?
- 18:37Now, really think about it.
- 18:39Is it your employer?
- 18:43Is it one paycheck?
- 18:46Is it debt?
- 18:49Is it fear?
- 18:51Is it the belief that you'll
- 18:52figure it out someday?
- 18:55Or are you intentionally
- 18:57building ownership?
- 18:59Because every financial decision
- 19:02is taking you somewhere.
- 19:04The question is whether you're
- 19:06choosing the destination.
- 19:09Now, I don't expect your entire
- 19:11life to change this week.
- 19:13I don't expect you to launch a
- 19:14business tomorrow or write a book
- 19:16tomorrow or expect you to invest
- 19:19thousands of dollars overnight.
- 19:21But I do expect you to
- 19:23begin thinking differently.
- 19:26Today is about awareness because awareness
- 19:30always comes before transformation.
- 19:33Now, I want you to take
- 19:35out your phone, okay?
- 19:37Not tomorrow, not after dinner,
- 19:39right now if you can, and
- 19:42answer these three questions.
- 19:44Number one, if my paycheck
- 19:46stopped tomorrow, what would
- 19:48continue producing income?
- 19:51Maybe the answer is nothing.
- 19:53That's okay.
- 19:55This is not about shame.
- 19:56This is about clarity.
- 20:00Number two, what knowledge or
- 20:03experience do I already have
- 20:06that could become an asset?
- 20:09Can you teach?
- 20:11Could you consult, write,
- 20:15create, coach, build, lead?
- 20:22See, many women are sitting on
- 20:24years of experience but have never
- 20:27considered theirselves valuable.
- 20:30You don't need another degree.
- 20:33You don't need another perspective.
- 20:35And then finally, that third question
- 20:37is, what is one small step that I
- 20:40can take this week towards ownership?
- 20:43Maybe it's buying a simple domain name.
- 20:47Maybe it's writing the first page of your
- 20:50book, maybe even your first paragraph.
- 20:53Maybe it's opening a separate savings
- 20:55account for your future business.
- 20:58Maybe it's finally scheduling that
- 21:01meeting you've been putting off.
- 21:03Or maybe it's simply
- 21:05saying, "I think I'm ready."
- 21:09Because small steps become habits, and
- 21:12habits become momentum, and momentum
- 21:15changes lives Every episode of Financial
- 21:20Feminism comes with something practical.
- 21:23Today's free download is the Financial
- 21:26Freedom screensaver pack, one for
- 21:28your phone, one for your computer.
- 21:31Why?
- 21:32Because the average person checks their
- 21:34phone dozens of times every single day.
- 21:37Imagine if every single time you
- 21:39picked it up, instead of seeing
- 21:41another notification, you saw
- 21:43this: "I am not bad with money.
- 21:46I am building power." Or on your
- 21:49desktop, "She who owns the purse
- 21:51owns the power." Words matter.
- 21:55The conversations we have
- 21:57with ourselves matter.
- 21:59What we repeatedly see becomes
- 22:01what we repeatedly believe.
- 22:03So download today's free resource,
- 22:06use it, look at it every day, because
- 22:08this isn't just wallpaper, it's a
- 22:10reminder of the woman you're becoming.
- 22:14Before next week's episode, I want
- 22:16you to complete today's download.
- 22:19Set your new screensaver, and then I
- 22:21want you to take a screenshot, share
- 22:24it on social media, or post it inside
- 22:27our Financial Feminism community.
- 22:30Tell us one thing you realized
- 22:31while listening today.
- 22:33Maybe it was, "I've been working for
- 22:35income instead of ownership." Maybe it
- 22:38was, "I've waited too long," or maybe
- 22:40it was, "I'm finally ready." Then I
- 22:44want you to tag three women, not because
- 22:46we're trying to go viral, but because
- 22:48conversations change lives, and you
- 22:51never know who needs permission to
- 22:53start thinking differently about money.
- 22:56Maybe it's your sister.
- 22:57Maybe it's your daughter.
- 22:59It could be your coworker
- 23:01or your best friend.
- 23:03Financial freedom spreads
- 23:04one conversation at a time.
- 23:06Let's start a whole lot more of them.
- 23:10Now, before we go, I want
- 23:11you to remember something.
- 23:14You are not behind.
- 23:16You are not too late.
- 23:19You are not bad with money.
