- 0:15Speaker 2: a show that shows life lessons and tips to help
- 0:17Speaker 2: make you rich in life. And today we are so
- 0:20Speaker 2: excited because we are joined once again by.
- 0:22Speaker 3: The beautiful, incredible, brave Britney Saunders.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I feel almost a bit silly giving a bit of
- 0:28Speaker 2: a like elevator pitch on who you are, because top
- 0:32Speaker 2: it like we've been following your journey from the YouTube
- 0:35Speaker 2: days for like over a decade now. But of course
- 0:38Speaker 2: you are the founder of Fate the label and incredibly
- 0:41Speaker 2: successful and also very cool in.
- 0:44Speaker 4: Chic fashion label. Thank you. And then now.
- 0:47Speaker 2: You have just launched your debut book just getting started, yes,
- 0:51Speaker 2: which is so crazy.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Yeah, who would have thought?
- 0:55Speaker 5: Not me?
- 0:56Speaker 4: But I did it. You have a lot to say.
- 1:00Speaker 4: I do.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I do.
- 1:01Speaker 6: But you know, when you're doing anything new, like even
- 1:04Speaker 6: with all the confidence that I've built over the years,
- 1:06Speaker 6: you're still like, oh me, like I'm going to write
- 1:08Speaker 6: a book, Like when you're doing something brand new that
- 1:10Speaker 6: you've never done before, Like the last time I'd written
- 1:12Speaker 6: was in year ten. Yeah you know, so I was
- 1:14Speaker 6: like really, like I'm gonna write a book, all right,
- 1:17Speaker 6: gave it a go, and here we are.
- 1:18Speaker 7: I think it just makes so much sense.
- 1:20Speaker 5: Before we get into the episode, we always start with
- 1:22Speaker 5: our life lesson of the week.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Yes, big or small?
- 1:25Speaker 7: Okay, So what's your life lesson of the week.
- 1:28Speaker 6: I saw this one somewhere on TikTok or something, and
- 1:32Speaker 6: it was about posting and creating content.
- 1:35Speaker 4: So this isn't like my lesson. Like I saw someone
- 1:37Speaker 4: else say this. You learned it from them?
- 1:39Speaker 5: Yeah, that's all life lessons and it was great.
- 1:42Speaker 6: It was aimed at people who like post content and
- 1:47Speaker 6: the person was saying, you need to see posting a
- 1:50Speaker 6: piece of content like you're buying a ticket in the
- 1:52Speaker 6: lottery and like you're not going to win every time,
- 1:55Speaker 6: but like you're taking the gamble every time.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Not that I'm trying to like encourage gamb on.
- 2:00Speaker 6: This podcast, but just like keep posting, like because every
- 2:05Speaker 6: time it's almost like you're buying a ticket in the lottery,
- 2:07Speaker 6: and like one time that you buy that ticket, you
- 2:10Speaker 6: might like have a massive win kind of thing. Because
- 2:12Speaker 6: I know when it comes to posting content, people can
- 2:14Speaker 6: get disheartened and like I'm not gonna do it anymore.
- 2:17Speaker 6: But like, every time you put that piece of content out,
- 2:20Speaker 6: it's like you're essentially gambling with the internet and one
- 2:23Speaker 6: day you might win that you know, massive jackpot and
- 2:26Speaker 6: it'll be that one video that like blows up your
- 2:28Speaker 6: business or whatever it is. So like, keep buying the
- 2:31Speaker 6: lottery tickets, AKA, just keep posting the content.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I love that.
- 2:35Speaker 6: And also I saw another video on the same sort
- 2:37Speaker 6: of theme. I think I saved it somewhere. But she
- 2:39Speaker 6: was talking about people like getting disheartened buy like the
- 2:42Speaker 6: amount of views but they get and she's like, if
- 2:45Speaker 6: you're getting two hundred views, and she was referencing like
- 2:48Speaker 6: what size that is, Like if.
- 2:50Speaker 5: You're getting an auditory, Yeah, She's like, if.
- 2:52Speaker 6: You're getting two hundred views, that's an auditorium of people.
- 2:55Speaker 6: If you're getting a thousand views, it's like, I don't
- 2:58Speaker 6: know what stadiums she was referenced. Yeah, but again, like
- 3:01Speaker 6: people go that flopped only got two hundred views, Like
- 3:04Speaker 6: that's too people.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Eyeballs, Yeah, all of the eyeballs that are scrolling on
- 3:08Speaker 2: tik tak. Yeah, the millions of videos that could have
- 3:12Speaker 2: been served to that good perspective yeah, for sure.
- 3:14Speaker 4: What's yours? Okay?
- 3:16Speaker 5: Mine is something that I've been thinking about incredibly a
- 3:18Speaker 5: lot recently.
- 3:19Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, brace yourself.
- 3:21Speaker 5: And I think we have lost the art of this
- 3:24Speaker 5: made me think of you gesture like this made me
- 3:27Speaker 5: think of you gesture or I thought you would like
- 3:30Speaker 5: this gesture. And I don't think this gesture is dead,
- 3:35Speaker 5: but I think it's on life support. I think it
- 3:37Speaker 5: needs like like, we need to bring it back. And
- 3:42Speaker 5: this made me think of you. Gesture is when you're
- 3:44Speaker 5: on the way to meet a friend and you stop
- 3:46Speaker 5: in to get petrol and you grab their favorite chockey,
- 3:49Speaker 5: or you know that they really need a new pair
- 3:52Speaker 5: of jeans and you see a pair on sale and
- 3:53Speaker 5: you send it to them and you go, oh, I
- 3:55Speaker 5: saw these, they're on sale.
- 3:56Speaker 7: You might like them.
- 3:57Speaker 5: And it's basically the love child between acts of service
- 4:00Speaker 5: and gift giving, because it doesn't always need to be
- 4:02Speaker 5: an object. It doesn't always need to be spending money.
- 4:06Speaker 5: I mean love that if it does as someone who
- 4:09Speaker 5: loves getting presents.
- 4:10Speaker 7: Right, And I just think we need to bring this back.
- 4:13Speaker 5: So as a result of bringing this back, I have
- 4:16Speaker 5: a gift that of this made me think of us,
- 4:19Speaker 5: So I brought us.
- 4:20Speaker 7: Some Chocky's.
- 4:23Speaker 5: Chockies, yeah, because I was going to put them in
- 4:26Speaker 5: the pantry this morning and then I went, no, I
- 4:29Speaker 5: bring them everyone, all right, So what's your life lesson
- 4:32Speaker 5: of the week.
- 4:32Speaker 2: My life lesson of the week is related to my
- 4:36Speaker 2: controversial crush, which is dj X.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Who's that?
- 4:41Speaker 3: That is the AI DJ on Spotify.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Oh you know him?
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I just like I love his energy, his vibe.
- 4:48Speaker 2: And there's a new feature that you can do a request,
- 4:52Speaker 2: so it's kind of like Alexa and you hold it down.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You can be like, hey, dj X, like play me
- 4:57Speaker 2: a song that I haven't listened to in three years.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Last night I was like, DJX put on my favorite
- 5:04Speaker 2: orchestral piece of music when I was getting in the shower,
- 5:06Speaker 2: and then like he pulled up like my most played
- 5:08Speaker 2: and at a little button at the bottom of the
- 5:10Speaker 2: screen and you press it and speak into your phone
- 5:13Speaker 2: and say, DJX, play whatever, and it's just fun.
- 5:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:18Speaker 2: I'm like, speaking of gambling, I'm like, I don't know
- 5:20Speaker 2: what I'm going to get.
- 5:22Speaker 7: Okay, shall we get into the episode?
- 5:24Speaker 4: Let's do it? Okay.
- 5:29Speaker 5: So I'm very excited chat with you because we're going
- 5:31Speaker 5: to be covering a lot about business and celebrating your
- 5:36Speaker 5: new book.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Yes, and I'll tell you what I have to say
- 5:38Speaker 4: to on that.
- 5:40Speaker 6: Like we had our book launch event last night, which
- 5:42Speaker 6: you were both at, and we had like the greatest
- 5:45Speaker 6: people there and people that like I haven't met yet
- 5:47Speaker 6: but have followed online for ages, and like one of
- 5:49Speaker 6: the girls was saying to me, I've finally just started
- 5:53Speaker 6: listening to your business podcast.
- 5:55Speaker 4: And it's actually so good.
- 5:56Speaker 6: And I'm like, thank you, because like I'm constantly like
- 5:59Speaker 6: jumping on my story trying to encourage everyone to listen
- 6:02Speaker 6: to my podcast because I think when people hear the
- 6:05Speaker 6: word business, they think boring, but I think they think
- 6:08Speaker 6: men in suits in a corporate building.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Yep.
- 6:10Speaker 6: And I was like, thank you so much, Like this
- 6:12Speaker 6: just validates like I try to make business fun and interesting,
- 6:16Speaker 6: and even if you know people aren't in business at all,
- 6:19Speaker 6: like they can still get a lot out of some
- 6:21Speaker 6: like learning from someone who is in business, and like
- 6:24Speaker 6: without realizing it, even if you're not like in business yourself,
- 6:27Speaker 6: like you're part of businesses, Like we're shopping online all
- 6:30Speaker 6: the time from all of these businesses.
- 6:32Speaker 7: Reading this book as well.
- 6:33Speaker 5: I think you were so vulnerable and so open in
- 6:37Speaker 5: a way that you very easily could have kept a
- 6:39Speaker 5: lot of these things to yourself, not in a way
- 6:41Speaker 5: a bit like you shouldn't have shared, in a way
- 6:44Speaker 5: that it's like you could have gate kept a lot
- 6:46Speaker 5: of the stuff that you put in the book. But
- 6:47Speaker 5: you're like, no, this is how you do it, which
- 6:49Speaker 5: I really admire you for. My one of my favorite,
- 6:52Speaker 5: one of my favorite life lessons in the book is
- 6:55Speaker 5: life lesson number seven hundred and thirty eight.
- 6:57Speaker 6: Was that the number that I wrote right now?
- 7:01Speaker 5: It's babe, And it was never higher family friends or
- 7:07Speaker 5: anyone recommended to by family or friends. And in quotes,
- 7:11Speaker 5: it never works out in the long run, yes, explain.
- 7:16Speaker 6: Elaborate, Yeah, this is a good one. And I think
- 7:19Speaker 6: this is completely circumstantial.
- 7:22Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 7:23Speaker 6: And then people would say to me in that will
- 7:26Speaker 6: you work with your partner? So then where do you
- 7:28Speaker 6: draw the line? And like, for example, you two work
- 7:32Speaker 6: together and it works amazingly. I know plenty of other
- 7:34Speaker 6: girls are besties and they work together and it works
- 7:36Speaker 6: for them. I think it's all about finding what works
- 7:39Speaker 6: for you and what doesn't. Because I've had a million
- 7:41Speaker 6: people say to me, well, you work with your partner
- 7:44Speaker 6: a j I could never because I would just.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Rip his head off if we work together kind of thing.
- 7:48Speaker 6: So I think it's circumstantial and what really does work
- 7:51Speaker 6: for like you and whoever it is. At the end
- 7:53Speaker 6: of the day, there's family owned businesses out there, there's
- 7:56Speaker 6: besties running businesses. But just for me, like one of
- 7:58Speaker 6: the lessons that I learned like years ago, like in
- 8:01Speaker 6: the early days of Faith, when I started Fate, I
- 8:04Speaker 6: didn't take it seriously because it was just me given
- 8:07Speaker 6: something new a go. By that time, I had tried
- 8:10Speaker 6: a million other things. I had my YouTube channel, I
- 8:13Speaker 6: had a spray tan business back in the day, I
- 8:15Speaker 6: did freelance, mobile makeup.
- 8:17Speaker 4: I had a coffee scrub business.
- 8:18Speaker 6: So when it come to me starting Fate, I didn't
- 8:20Speaker 6: have any goals or plans beyond starting it in that moment.
- 8:24Speaker 6: I didn't think, one day, this is going to be
- 8:25Speaker 6: a massive company with over seventy staff, it's going to
- 8:29Speaker 6: be turning over eight figures in a year.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Like.
- 8:31Speaker 4: I didn't have any of those goals.
- 8:33Speaker 6: It was just Laddy Dad, like this will be fun,
- 8:35Speaker 6: Like I'm going to set it up in the shed
- 8:36Speaker 6: underneath the house, and so because my mind wasn't serious,
- 8:40Speaker 6: and because I had no management experience. I'd never worked
- 8:44Speaker 6: a job for more than six months before quitting it
- 8:46Speaker 6: to go on to the next one. Like I'd never
- 8:48Speaker 6: received a pay rise or a promotion, or was a
- 8:50Speaker 6: team leader or anything. I had no people's skills. So
- 8:54Speaker 6: because I wasn't serious about fate, I never thought, maybe
- 8:59Speaker 6: I need to hire people are going to be serious
- 9:00Speaker 6: about this business if I want to get it to
- 9:02Speaker 6: that massive point. And so my first initial instinct, and
- 9:07Speaker 6: a lot of founders will do this when you're starting
- 9:09Speaker 6: your small little business, is well, this is fun and
- 9:12Speaker 6: this is easy. So I'm just going to hire the
- 9:14Speaker 6: people that I know to help me do the day
- 9:16Speaker 6: to day jobs because we're not doing anything overly serious,
- 9:18Speaker 6: like this is all just fun and games. And so
- 9:20Speaker 6: for those first few years I did just hire family friends,
- 9:24Speaker 6: friends of friends, and again it was fine and it
- 9:28Speaker 6: worked for me in that moment and that period of
- 9:31Speaker 6: my business. But then as my goals grew later down
- 9:35Speaker 6: the track, and I was like, wait, this is going
- 9:37Speaker 6: to turn into something big, I realize the importance of
- 9:40Speaker 6: having people in the business that are actually serious about
- 9:43Speaker 6: the business, and like love your friends, love your family
- 9:47Speaker 6: and whatever. But like, if you're wanting to build a big,
- 9:50Speaker 6: successful business, I don't think hiring the people closest to
- 9:53Speaker 6: you is like the right thing to do, because like,
- 9:57Speaker 6: businesses have phases and like back then when I had
- 10:00Speaker 6: just like friends of friends, my friend's cousin, whoever working,
- 10:04Speaker 6: AJ's mom's daughters, friends, like you know, dogs, Yeah, like
- 10:09Speaker 6: that's whoever's available. That was fine in that in that
- 10:12Speaker 6: era of fate. But I couldn't have got fate to
- 10:15Speaker 6: where it is today if I kept like that same
- 10:18Speaker 6: vibe happening.
- 10:19Speaker 4: And so that's why it's just always my piece of advice.
- 10:22Speaker 6: You know, if you start a little business at home,
- 10:25Speaker 6: like like I did, and you hire the people close
- 10:27Speaker 6: to you, that's all well and good like and that
- 10:30Speaker 6: would it worked for us back then. But if I'd
- 10:32Speaker 6: stayed like that, then the business would have stayed like that.
- 10:35Speaker 3: So how does that work with AJ? Because you did
- 10:38Speaker 3: mention that.
- 10:39Speaker 2: So AJ, for anybody who doesn't know, is your long
- 10:41Speaker 2: term partner and you live together, you work together on fate,
- 10:44Speaker 2: So how do you maintain that balance? Yeah, for anybody
- 10:47Speaker 2: who is good, I think business with a friend or
- 10:49Speaker 2: a romantic partner.
- 10:50Speaker 6: I think it's the first reason why we can work
- 10:52Speaker 6: together so well. I think a lot of people here
- 10:55Speaker 6: like that I work with my partner, and they think
- 10:56Speaker 6: that we sit at a desk together all day, But
- 10:59Speaker 6: we like don't see each other all day. You know,
- 11:02Speaker 6: he's off doing one thing. Yeah, I'm off doing another thing.
- 11:04Speaker 6: And then we see each other when we get home.
- 11:06Speaker 6: It's like, what do you do today? You know, because
- 11:07Speaker 6: I might be at the office all day and he
- 11:08Speaker 6: might be in the warehouse or I'm traveling around doing
- 11:11Speaker 6: my book tour at the moment. So like when I
- 11:14Speaker 6: say we work together, it's not like we're working on
- 11:15Speaker 6: the same tasks, because that would be extremely difficult, But
- 11:18Speaker 6: at times we are. And again, I think it's circumstantial.
- 11:22Speaker 6: AJ and I just so happened to work really well
- 11:24Speaker 6: together the same way that you two would work really
- 11:27Speaker 6: well together.
- 11:27Speaker 5: I'm a secret spy and I actually asked AJ this
- 11:31Speaker 5: question last night. What did he say, Tom, bring to
- 11:34Speaker 5: this and tell you? Aj said, the reason why you
- 11:37Speaker 5: guys work so well together is because you're good at
- 11:40Speaker 5: separate things. Yes, you're really good at what you do
- 11:43Speaker 5: and your role and AJ is really good at what
- 11:45Speaker 5: he does and his role, and you have different working
- 11:48Speaker 5: styles but the same communication skills. Yes, And I was like,
- 11:52Speaker 5: that hits a nail on the head because it's exactly
- 11:55Speaker 5: the same with Sale and I. We have different strengths
- 11:57Speaker 5: and you have to play to those strengths.
- 11:59Speaker 6: And I think a lot of people like when they
- 12:01Speaker 6: get really excited at the idea of maybe starting a
- 12:04Speaker 6: business with their best friend, it's because they're so the
- 12:06Speaker 6: same and they're like, and I think we might have
- 12:08Speaker 6: touched on this last time that I came on, because
- 12:10Speaker 6: he says, like bringing up like I'm remembering having this j.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm having dajavu.
- 12:14Speaker 6: But like, by all means go into business with your
- 12:16Speaker 6: best yet, but just have clear boundaries with one another.
- 12:20Speaker 6: Don't just both get super excited at this idea and
- 12:22Speaker 6: be like it's gonna be so fun and we're gonna
- 12:24Speaker 6: make so much money and we're just gonna have fun.
- 12:26Speaker 4: All day long.
- 12:27Speaker 6: Like figure out how are you gonna work together and
- 12:29Speaker 6: are you both wanting to do the exact same tasks,
- 12:31Speaker 6: because then are you just doing like one person's job
- 12:33Speaker 6: spread across two people, And like, how are you going
- 12:36Speaker 6: to communicate when shit goes wrong, because like there's times
- 12:40Speaker 6: where AJ and I, like, she will be hitting the
- 12:43Speaker 6: fucking fan, and then like I've got to consciously remember, yes,
- 12:46Speaker 6: she is hitting the fan in our workplace, whatever logistics
- 12:49Speaker 6: stuff like whatever could be going wrong, and we're gonna
- 12:51Speaker 6: have to have a conversation, which is going to cause tension.
- 12:53Speaker 6: But then I'm mindful that this is also our relationship,
- 12:56Speaker 6: So then like it's just being like conscious of like
- 12:59Speaker 6: the way that you're talking to one another. Or some
- 13:01Speaker 6: nights will be laying in bed and like he'll pull
- 13:03Speaker 6: out his laptop and start because AJ does all our staff,
- 13:06Speaker 6: pays and everything, and then he'll be like, why the
- 13:08Speaker 6: fuck haven't don't anyone put in their time? She's and
- 13:10Speaker 6: I'm like, ay, date, and I just have to go.
- 13:11Speaker 4: It's ten thirty at night.
- 13:13Speaker 6: Let's shut the laptop and let's just contact the girls
- 13:15Speaker 6: in the morning.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Yeah, like nobody's going to be replying yeah cluck at night.
- 13:19Speaker 6: So like we just have to consciously ensure that we're yeah,
- 13:23Speaker 6: like working on our own separate things, but obviously on
- 13:25Speaker 6: the same goals, and also that in our personal private
- 13:29Speaker 6: time we're not just like letting work overtake our lives,
- 13:33Speaker 6: or like if we're out for dinner and we're talking
- 13:34Speaker 6: about like a stressful situation, just being conscious and going,
- 13:38Speaker 6: let's not talk about this for now, Like let's just
- 13:39Speaker 6: talk about it tomorrow, talking about.
- 13:41Speaker 7: It in business hours.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Yeah, if you're going to go into it, the two
- 13:45Speaker 5: things you need to know is what are we working on?
- 13:48Speaker 7: Like what are our roles?
- 13:49Speaker 5: And how do we communicate when shit hits the fan?
- 13:52Speaker 5: How are we going to deal with that? Like what
- 13:54Speaker 5: wording are we going to use? When do we have
- 13:56Speaker 5: those meetings?
- 13:56Speaker 4: Just be mindful of it.
- 13:57Speaker 6: And again, like that's why I say it because in
- 14:00Speaker 6: those early days of fate, like I was so clueless.
- 14:02Speaker 4: I was young. I thought this was great, this is fun, exciting.
- 14:05Speaker 4: You were just new. Yeah.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Yeah, And a lot of these things you do you
- 14:09Speaker 2: learn as you go and through the experience, which you
- 14:12Speaker 2: share a lot of in the book and on the podcast,
- 14:15Speaker 2: which is incredible. And in the book you're also very vulnerable,
- 14:19Speaker 2: and you do share a lot about yourself and your business,
- 14:22Speaker 2: but also like some of the things in your life
- 14:25Speaker 2: and your personal life that have impacted the business and
- 14:29Speaker 2: how you run your business, and you talk a lot
- 14:31Speaker 2: about how your relationship with your family, and your parents
- 14:35Speaker 2: had a lot of influence on your relationship with imposter
- 14:40Speaker 2: syndrome and your experiences with that.
- 14:42Speaker 4: And there was one.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Quote that really hit hard with us, and we think
- 14:46Speaker 2: we'll touch a lot of people as well. And it's
- 14:49Speaker 2: hard to have self belief when the people who are
- 14:51Speaker 2: supposed to nurture you and guide you aren't there, or worse,
- 14:55Speaker 2: make you feel like you'll never be enough. How do
- 14:58Speaker 2: you push past that voice that's telling you that you're
- 15:01Speaker 2: not enough?
- 15:03Speaker 6: I think for me, I've been okay with not having
- 15:08Speaker 6: that support because it's been since I was little, so
- 15:11Speaker 6: it's almost like normal to me. But I definitely reflect
- 15:15Speaker 6: on it in moments, especially writing this book, which took
- 15:17Speaker 6: me two years to write, and also just like in
- 15:20Speaker 6: this current week that we're recording this episode, like I'm
- 15:24Speaker 6: traveling around to all of our fate stores and then
- 15:26Speaker 6: we had the pr night last night, and it's in moments.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Like that where I go, holy shit, like just for.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Anyone that doesn't know, like every single thing that I've
- 15:36Speaker 6: ever done, every store I've ever opened, like last night,
- 15:38Speaker 6: this book tour that I'm going on, every business I've opened,
- 15:41Speaker 6: my parents have never been there, and I don't realize
- 15:45Speaker 6: that because that's.
- 15:46Speaker 4: My normal life.
- 15:48Speaker 6: Like I've never had like parental support or someone coming
- 15:52Speaker 6: to a keynote speech to like clap me on the
- 15:54Speaker 6: side of the stage or whatever. It's been that way
- 15:57Speaker 6: my whole life, so I don't really think of it
- 15:59Speaker 6: or notice it.
- 16:00Speaker 4: But then I guess when I do like really.
- 16:01Speaker 6: Significant things like this book tour, I'm like, holy shit,
- 16:04Speaker 6: like I just do all this shit on autopilot without
- 16:07Speaker 6: a mum or dad there to.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Be like well done.
- 16:10Speaker 6: Yeah, But it's been like that since I was little,
- 16:13Speaker 6: so like it's sad that I'm just so used to
- 16:16Speaker 6: that that it's not even usually a thought in my mind.
- 16:18Speaker 6: And I think I noticed it as well when I'm
- 16:22Speaker 6: like going around to all of our Fate stores and
- 16:24Speaker 6: we're doing this book tour and I see like some
- 16:26Speaker 6: of our Fate community members bring their mum with them,
- 16:29Speaker 6: and then I'm like, oh, like hang on a second,
- 16:32Speaker 6: like my mom isn't fucking here. And it's in moments
- 16:34Speaker 6: like that where I realize, holy shit, like I'm doing
- 16:36Speaker 6: really doing this thing all on my own. But like
- 16:38Speaker 6: this is when I look and think, like, yes, whilst
- 16:42Speaker 6: I don't have my mom and dad there to see
- 16:44Speaker 6: any of my achievements or anything. I think that's why
- 16:48Speaker 6: maybe like I've been able to build such a strong
- 16:50Speaker 6: community around me with AJ and like with our Fate
- 16:53Speaker 6: team and then with our entire bloody Fate community that
- 16:56Speaker 6: we've got. So in a way, whilst I feel disappointed,
- 16:59Speaker 6: and I I fucking wish that I had like an
- 17:01Speaker 6: awesome mum and dad because I'm like, what a fucking
- 17:03Speaker 6: loss for them, because I'm.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Well, you're achieving so much, and like anybody who knows you,
- 17:08Speaker 2: including us, is so proud of you.
- 17:10Speaker 6: Yeah, and it's just like, damn, what a disappointment, Like
- 17:12Speaker 6: it's just a wasted opportunity really, because I would love
- 17:15Speaker 6: to have a mum and dad that like could come
- 17:17Speaker 6: along for all of this, and also that I could
- 17:20Speaker 6: then like spoil from all of my achievements, like I'd
- 17:23Speaker 6: love to you know, take them on a holiday or like,
- 17:26Speaker 6: you know, spoil them rotten.
- 17:27Speaker 4: But that's just not the way that it is.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Do you think this has led to you being able
- 17:33Speaker 5: to learn how to nurture yourself one hundred percent for yourself?
- 17:37Speaker 7: Yeah, someone else isn't there to do it.
- 17:39Speaker 6: I think that's the whole reason why I do what
- 17:41Speaker 6: I do and why I've always been the way that
- 17:43Speaker 6: I have been, like this way that I am where
- 17:46Speaker 6: I just like go for things and people would be
- 17:49Speaker 6: like holy shit, like she just has no fear. I
- 17:51Speaker 6: think it all stems from like being so let down
- 17:54Speaker 6: by my parents when I was really young, like young young,
- 17:57Speaker 6: like eleven, so like I just felt like from a
- 18:00Speaker 6: really young age, I just had no choice but to
- 18:03Speaker 6: figure stuff out on my own. Yeah, Like I was
- 18:06Speaker 6: never encouraged to go to school, Like it was like
- 18:09Speaker 6: I don't give a fuck if you don't go to school,
- 18:10Speaker 6: Like I don't care. And so I guess I'm fortunate
- 18:14Speaker 6: that I took that and went all right, like I'm
- 18:16Speaker 6: gonna do something for myself, rather than like feel sorry
- 18:20Speaker 6: for myself that I didn't have anyone to teach me anything.
- 18:23Speaker 6: And so I think it just all started back then,
- 18:25Speaker 6: like I dropped out of school, I moved out of
- 18:27Speaker 6: home as early as I could, like started earning money
- 18:30Speaker 6: paying rent when I was seventeen, and just like all
- 18:33Speaker 6: the entrepreneurial things, I think it's because I think it's
- 18:35Speaker 6: because I had no one telling me what to do.
- 18:37Speaker 6: So I kind of felt like I was in the
- 18:39Speaker 6: SIMS living on like free play mode, Like you know
- 18:41Speaker 6: when you.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Let the Sims go free play, you love the Sims.
- 18:44Speaker 4: I fucking love the Sims.
- 18:46Speaker 6: Okay, but it's like, yeah, I was in the SIMS
- 18:49Speaker 6: and I was on free play mode, and so I thought, well,
- 18:52Speaker 6: no one's around to tell me, like you should go
- 18:53Speaker 6: to UNI or you should try hard in year twelve,
- 18:56Speaker 6: because I dropped out before you twelve anyway, So I
- 18:59Speaker 6: just really was in free play mode and just started
- 19:02Speaker 6: with one little thing after the other, you know, seeing
- 19:05Speaker 6: what I could achieve on my own. And it's from
- 19:07Speaker 6: that that I've realized, holy shit, like if I actually
- 19:10Speaker 6: really try and do something like, I can do it.
- 19:12Speaker 6: And so that's why it's just been like a snowball
- 19:14Speaker 6: effect over the last fifteen years or so since I
- 19:16Speaker 6: started on social media.
- 19:18Speaker 5: It is so invaluable that you don't need outside applause
- 19:24Speaker 5: for your achievements.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Obviously, it's you have that with.
- 19:28Speaker 5: Your found family basically within AJ and your friends and
- 19:31Speaker 5: your community, but there is such a like beautiful and
- 19:36Speaker 5: strong and resilient life lesson in that of I can
- 19:40Speaker 5: do all of this on my own doesn't mean.
- 19:42Speaker 4: It's not and say it's not disappointing.
- 19:45Speaker 6: It bloody is like I wish I had like an
- 19:47Speaker 6: amazing mum and dad that could be along on this
- 19:49Speaker 6: journey with me.
- 19:50Speaker 4: I'd fucking take them with me.
- 19:51Speaker 6: I'd be like, don't work, just come with me, you know,
- 19:53Speaker 6: Like agane, I just like literally start cracking up because like,
- 19:57Speaker 6: what else do you fucking do? I Like, we're just
- 20:00Speaker 6: doing this whole life, Like we've renovated our whole house.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Like no, like I don't have a family that's come
- 20:06Speaker 4: over to see it.
- 20:06Speaker 6: Like it's so fucking weird, honestly, and we just crack
- 20:09Speaker 6: up sometimes because if you don't.
- 20:10Speaker 4: Laugh, you cry.
- 20:11Speaker 6: Yeah, but I'm like, what the fuck, Like, We're literally
- 20:14Speaker 6: just doing this and.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Like where's my fucking parents.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 2: But I do think as well that from experiences like that,
- 20:21Speaker 2: then you know exactly what you want in the relationships
- 20:24Speaker 2: in your life, whether that is romantic or your friends
- 20:27Speaker 2: or the people that you work with. And I think
- 20:29Speaker 2: that's also set you up for success, not only in
- 20:32Speaker 2: making you an incredibly self sufficient person, but also you
- 20:36Speaker 2: probably have really high standards for the relationships in your life,
- 20:39Speaker 2: and those are two incredible outcomes from like a not
- 20:43Speaker 2: so great experience.
- 20:44Speaker 6: Yeah, And I always like, I don't talk about like
- 20:47Speaker 6: this stuff that we're talking about all that much because
- 20:50Speaker 6: like I obviously touched on it in the book, and
- 20:52Speaker 6: I've touched on it in my business podcast a little
- 20:54Speaker 6: bit too. But I don't want my story to be
- 20:56Speaker 6: like a sob story, to be like my mum and
- 20:58Speaker 6: dad don't talk to me, but I achieved all these things.
- 21:01Speaker 6: But I think it's it is an important part of
- 21:03Speaker 6: my life, and so that's why I've like opened up
- 21:06Speaker 6: a little bit a bit more about it in the book.
- 21:08Speaker 4: But you know, I don't want that to be like
- 21:09Speaker 4: my whole story. It's not, because it's not, but it's not.
- 21:13Speaker 6: But at the same time, it is, I think the
- 21:15Speaker 6: underlying reason why I've been able to do all the
- 21:17Speaker 6: things that I have. Like if I always think, you know,
- 21:20Speaker 6: if I'd grown up in a traditional family that encouraged
- 21:23Speaker 6: me to finish year twelve and go to UNI.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Like, how fucking different would my life be. It's crazy
- 21:27Speaker 4: when you do.
- 21:28Speaker 7: That when a back pedal, Yeah, and you're like, but
- 21:30Speaker 7: if this didn't happen and this wouldn't have happened, and.
- 21:32Speaker 6: This so like I went to them because it's because
- 21:36Speaker 6: of them that I was able to see my full
- 21:39Speaker 6: potential as an individual and do all the things that
- 21:42Speaker 6: I've done.
- 21:42Speaker 5: I think it's important to talk about it as well
- 21:44Speaker 5: for those who aren't in similar situations, absolutely and feel
- 21:49Speaker 5: as though they lack a spark because that spark hasn't
- 21:53Speaker 5: been nurtured. But another quote that I love in the
- 21:56Speaker 5: book that I was like, yes, kicking door of gingers,
- 22:00Speaker 5: and it was at the end of the day, no
- 22:01Speaker 5: one wants to upset someone, but at the same time,
- 22:04Speaker 5: you have to.
- 22:04Speaker 7: Put yourself first.
- 22:07Speaker 4: What does being.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Too nice look like when running a business and why
- 22:10Speaker 5: does it happen to women like too often?
- 22:14Speaker 4: Oh, don't get me started on this.
- 22:15Speaker 6: I actually just my episode that came out this week
- 22:18Speaker 6: on my business podcast is I did a whole episode
- 22:21Speaker 6: about being a woman in like leadership or management or
- 22:25Speaker 6: like in my position where you're the founder and all
- 22:29Speaker 6: the challenges that we face, with the biggest one of
- 22:31Speaker 6: all just not being taken seriously. And in the episode,
- 22:35Speaker 6: I just talk about like so many experiences over the
- 22:38Speaker 6: years where I've had conversations with both men and women
- 22:41Speaker 6: and where I've walked away from conversations and thought, if
- 22:45Speaker 6: I was a guy, like, what have that conversation gone
- 22:47Speaker 6: that way? And so yeah, Like there's been countless experiences
- 22:51Speaker 6: over the last eight years of me running fate where
- 22:54Speaker 6: I've had conversations and walked away and thought, yeah, that
- 23:00Speaker 6: was weird, you know, And then I think, in my head,
- 23:02Speaker 6: if I was a guy, I don't think that conversation
- 23:04Speaker 6: would have went that way. And I've paid attention to those,
- 23:06Speaker 6: but I also haven't paid attention to those, and I'm
- 23:10Speaker 6: sure it happens a lot more than I realized. And
- 23:11Speaker 6: I think it actually all circles back to my dad
- 23:14Speaker 6: walking out of my life when I was so young
- 23:17Speaker 6: that I don't think I've ever taken men seriously anyway.
- 23:19Speaker 6: My dad walked out of my life when I was fourteen,
- 23:22Speaker 6: and I was really fucking sad about it until I
- 23:24Speaker 6: was about seventeen or eighteen, because I was sad, like
- 23:27Speaker 6: I wanted him to teach me how to drive, I
- 23:28Speaker 6: wanted him to come my school for more, I wanted
- 23:30Speaker 6: him to see me get my first boyfriend, like all
- 23:32Speaker 6: the things, and I was fucking devo for all of
- 23:34Speaker 6: those years. But then I got over it, and so
- 23:37Speaker 6: I have never really thought about it since. I've never
- 23:39Speaker 6: thought about how that would play into my stance on
- 23:43Speaker 6: men in business. But then when I really stop and
- 23:46Speaker 6: think about it, when I've met blokes I don't know,
- 23:49Speaker 6: real estate agents, commercial real estate agents, and they've said,
- 23:52Speaker 6: you know, like, oh, so what is it that you do,
- 23:54Speaker 6: what is it that you sell, I'm like clothes, Like,
- 23:57Speaker 6: oh yeah, good luck with that.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Like I've never really like, I've always laughed that off.
- 24:01Speaker 6: And I think that's because my dad walked out when
- 24:03Speaker 6: I was fourteen, and I don't haven't given a shit
- 24:06Speaker 6: about men's opinions since then. I love it clocked this
- 24:11Speaker 6: whole thought process, like last week when I recorded.
- 24:14Speaker 5: That moment where you like have an out of body
- 24:16Speaker 5: experience where you're like, yes, walking around yourself from earth,
- 24:21Speaker 5: being like I am God.
- 24:23Speaker 6: Whereas I think a lot of women, especially women in
- 24:26Speaker 6: leadership management, you know, CEOs, founders on boards of directors,
- 24:31Speaker 6: they might you know, receive like those comments from men
- 24:35Speaker 6: all the time and maybe like really take them to
- 24:38Speaker 6: heart and get upset by them, or a guy saying
- 24:41Speaker 6: to me, oh yeah, good luck with that.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Like you know, I've had comments like that.
- 24:45Speaker 6: But every time I've gotten those comments, I've been like, yeah, thanks,
- 24:48Speaker 6: watch me fucking do it.
- 24:49Speaker 4: But I think that comes from my dad, and.
- 24:52Speaker 6: I've never clocked that in myself until just in the
- 24:55Speaker 6: last week. But yeah, like being a woman in leadership,
- 24:59Speaker 6: I've even experience it's not being taken seriously by women.
- 25:02Speaker 4: People that have worked for me, like in the.
- 25:04Speaker 6: Past, and people that have said horrible things to me,
- 25:08Speaker 6: you know, maybe they've been departing our company or they've
- 25:10Speaker 6: done something wrong. We've had to call them out on it,
- 25:12Speaker 6: and they then they come in with like the personal attack,
- 25:15Speaker 6: and then I've stepped away after it's all done, and
- 25:18Speaker 6: I'm like, if I was a guy, would they have
- 25:21Speaker 6: said that? Like, if that was AJ delivering that message,
- 25:24Speaker 6: would they go, AJ's a bitch?
- 25:25Speaker 3: Yeah, even that language.
- 25:27Speaker 2: I think the common thing about both of those examples,
- 25:30Speaker 2: with like the asshole real estate agent and the scorned employee,
- 25:35Speaker 2: is that they're both projections that people are putting on you,
- 25:39Speaker 2: and you have the skill to see through that facade,
- 25:42Speaker 2: which I think is really important in life but in
- 25:45Speaker 2: business as well, because business is business and it's not personal,
- 25:48Speaker 2: and that's why it is so important to know the
- 25:51Speaker 2: dynamics of your team. And one thing I did want
- 25:53Speaker 2: to ask you that as a founder, how do you
- 25:57Speaker 2: know what tasks to take on yourself and how do
- 26:00Speaker 2: you know when to delegate an outsource? Because also it's
- 26:04Speaker 2: your baby, it's your business.
- 26:05Speaker 4: It would be really hard not to be like, I'll
- 26:07Speaker 4: do it all. Oh yeah, it's really hard.
- 26:10Speaker 6: Delegating is extremely hard, and I'm very heavily involved in
- 26:14Speaker 6: like all operations of Fate. But over the last few years,
- 26:18Speaker 6: we have built a really strong foundation, like in our
- 26:22Speaker 6: team structure that like all areas of the business are
- 26:27Speaker 6: covered without me needing to like physically be doing all
- 26:29Speaker 6: the work.
- 26:30Speaker 7: But how long did it take for that to get there?
- 26:33Speaker 6: I'd say, like for us to get to like the
- 26:36Speaker 6: solid foundations that we have now in terms of our
- 26:38Speaker 6: like management structure at work, not that I want to
- 26:40Speaker 6: say it's like a hierarchy or anything, but you know,
- 26:43Speaker 6: we've got like our HR, we've got our head of operations.
- 26:47Speaker 4: I'd say It's taken.
- 26:48Speaker 6: Us like a good three years to really build that
- 26:51Speaker 6: out to where it's needed to be. And so day
- 26:55Speaker 6: to day, like every area of the business is covered
- 26:58Speaker 6: from all of our retail staff, like having people they
- 27:00Speaker 6: report to, all the warehouse staff having people they report to,
- 27:04Speaker 6: having our head office staff having someone they report to,
- 27:07Speaker 6: and then I just kind of sit at the top
- 27:09Speaker 6: of that and I'm not in the day to day
- 27:12Speaker 6: of any of that.
- 27:12Speaker 4: But if I need to be, I absolutely am.
- 27:14Speaker 6: So if someone's like, hey, I'm struggling with this person
- 27:17Speaker 6: on my team or like we're having this disconnect over here,
- 27:19Speaker 6: then of course I'm going to dive head first and
- 27:21Speaker 6: help that person.
- 27:22Speaker 4: But I'm not involved in like the little.
- 27:26Speaker 6: Day to day operations of the business because there's people
- 27:29Speaker 6: in place to do that so that I'm not having
- 27:31Speaker 6: to worry about it, because otherwise I'd spend all day
- 27:34Speaker 6: like on the tiny you're in the way, yeah, and
- 27:37Speaker 6: whereas like I know, and I've I've had to learn
- 27:41Speaker 6: that for the business to continue growing, I can't be
- 27:44Speaker 6: worrying about like what this customer said in an email,
- 27:47Speaker 6: like you know, like we'll let that team in the
- 27:50Speaker 6: business like deal with that, because if not, that's.
- 27:52Speaker 7: Their skill as well.
- 27:54Speaker 5: Yeah, about hiring people, and it's better at doing something
- 27:56Speaker 5: than you're absolutely and it's.
- 27:57Speaker 4: Hard to do that, especially when you start a business.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Yourself where you know, back in the day, I was
- 28:02Speaker 6: doing the emails, I was doing all of our returns,
- 28:04Speaker 6: I was doing our eCOM photography, I was reordering our
- 28:07Speaker 6: collections on Shopify, like I was doing everything. And I
- 28:09Speaker 6: just learned over the years that I have to let
- 28:12Speaker 6: all these tasks go number one so that people there
- 28:15Speaker 6: that are better than me can come in and do that,
- 28:16Speaker 6: so that I can focus on like the big picture
- 28:18Speaker 6: of like what store are we going to open next?
- 28:21Speaker 6: And you know, what can I do more on my
- 28:23Speaker 6: social media to help grow the business.
- 28:24Speaker 5: Because if you're two in the weeds, it's your two
- 28:26Speaker 5: in the present rather than the.
- 28:28Speaker 4: Moving for right.
- 28:29Speaker 5: Yeah, in hindsight, yeah, what are the things that if
- 28:32Speaker 5: you're starting a business, you're like, yep, when you're starting,
- 28:36Speaker 5: like potentially the funds aren't there. These are the things
- 28:38Speaker 5: that you can and should do yourself. These are the
- 28:41Speaker 5: things absolutely look into delegating or getting someone else to do.
- 28:45Speaker 6: It really depends on the kind of business that you're starting,
- 28:47Speaker 6: because there's like so many businesses that you can start
- 28:49Speaker 6: where it's just you and you're able to do everything yourself.
- 28:52Speaker 6: So I think it really does come down to, like
- 28:54Speaker 6: what kind of business you're starting. My number one piece
- 28:57Speaker 6: of advice is if anyone is thinking of starting a business,
- 29:01Speaker 6: start an Instagram and start a TikTok and start posting
- 29:03Speaker 6: on there, even if you're not going to start.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Your business for two years.
- 29:07Speaker 6: Start building a personal brand, because that's the way that
- 29:11Speaker 6: businesses are bloody moving these days. I was fortunate enough
- 29:15Speaker 6: that I'd started a personal brand when I was a teenager,
- 29:17Speaker 6: and I had no idea that was even a thing,
- 29:20Speaker 6: because I just started making my stupid YouTube videos. And then,
- 29:22Speaker 6: like I don't know, five years ago, the words personal
- 29:25Speaker 6: brand came to be. Start creating and posting content. Post
- 29:29Speaker 6: those lotto tickets out into the world, even if it's
- 29:32Speaker 6: for a year while you're figuring out how to do
- 29:35Speaker 6: all the business stuff.
- 29:36Speaker 7: How do you build online community?
- 29:38Speaker 4: Just start posting random content of whatever it is that you're.
- 29:41Speaker 5: Interested, Like, not even about a business, doesn't have to
- 29:43Speaker 5: be about now.
- 29:44Speaker 6: I just start like doing vlogs, talking halls, showing something
- 29:48Speaker 6: that you have at home. And if you are wanting
- 29:50Speaker 6: to show like the behind the scenes of the business
- 29:52Speaker 6: show that say, I'm setting up my home office today,
- 29:56Speaker 6: you know, and do a little video about that or
- 29:58Speaker 6: like do a whole series about starting a busin business
- 30:00Speaker 6: and walk everyone through, like, Okay, so today I'm working
- 30:02Speaker 6: on building my shopifire website and like just start documenting shit,
- 30:06Speaker 6: because I think a lot of people can be misled
- 30:09Speaker 6: on social media and think that if you start a business,
- 30:13Speaker 6: you get all the products, you build your website, you
- 30:15Speaker 6: make the social media accounts, post to videos, you're going
- 30:17Speaker 6: to have.
- 30:18Speaker 4: A great launch.
- 30:19Speaker 6: But it's like, nah, you've got to earn those customers somehow.
- 30:22Speaker 4: You've got to earn that community.
- 30:24Speaker 5: Let's say you've got the community, yes, right, yeah, how
- 30:27Speaker 5: do you create viral content that will sell out a
- 30:30Speaker 5: product at launch?
- 30:32Speaker 6: I mean I would go as far as saying it's
- 30:34Speaker 6: pretty hard to like have a viral product on your
- 30:38Speaker 6: first launch unless it's something that is really solving a problem,
- 30:42Speaker 6: solving a problem or like standing out amongst like everything
- 30:45Speaker 6: that's out there right now. And again, like I think
- 30:48Speaker 6: it all just comes down to like how creative you
- 30:50Speaker 6: can get with your content, which is so difficult for
- 30:52Speaker 6: people to do if it's just them at home on
- 30:55Speaker 6: their own And I think that's just where like the
- 30:57Speaker 6: whole authenticity will always outperform anything else because people love
- 31:03Speaker 6: just someone showing up as who they are on social media.
- 31:07Speaker 6: But it's truly hard, like you can't ever pickx like
- 31:10Speaker 6: something that is going to go viral. But then again,
- 31:12Speaker 6: like you might have an idea in your head that
- 31:14Speaker 6: you think, I think, if I film this, it's.
- 31:16Speaker 4: Going to absolutely blow up.
- 31:18Speaker 6: Like for example, us going to Coachella and wearing Bunning's outfit.
- 31:21Speaker 6: I knew that was going to be viral before it
- 31:22Speaker 6: even happened because it was just this idea. I'm like, yeah,
- 31:24Speaker 6: this is gonna be on the news next day, we're
- 31:27Speaker 6: on the morning.
- 31:27Speaker 4: Show, like whatever.
- 31:29Speaker 6: But yeah, I would say just the number one important
- 31:32Speaker 6: thing to do is start building that audience online through
- 31:35Speaker 6: organic content. But I'd say, like, do all the things
- 31:38Speaker 6: on your own initially the same way I was. And
- 31:40Speaker 6: like my first hire was AJ's mom's family friend's daughter,
- 31:45Speaker 6: and she was coming two to three days a week
- 31:47Speaker 6: just casually to just come and help them be in
- 31:50Speaker 6: all round up with me. But that was because I
- 31:52Speaker 6: had that online audience, so I knew that I was
- 31:55Speaker 6: going to have orders to be packed, and so I
- 31:57Speaker 6: hired her straight off the bat. If you're just starting
- 32:00Speaker 6: out on your own and you're only going to be
- 32:02Speaker 6: getting you know, two orders a day three, maybe some
- 32:05Speaker 6: day zero, You're probably not at that stage of needing
- 32:07Speaker 6: to have someone in to come and help.
- 32:08Speaker 4: And you'll know if you are starting out on your own,
- 32:11Speaker 4: you'll know when you.
- 32:12Speaker 6: Need the help when you feel completely stretched to the
- 32:14Speaker 6: point where you can't work on anything new.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Yeah, and then you need to look at what is
- 32:18Speaker 4: taking up my whole day? Is it the emails? Is
- 32:20Speaker 4: it the paining orders? Yeah? Is it going to pick
- 32:24Speaker 4: up the returns? Like? What is it?
- 32:26Speaker 6: And then it's in that moment that you know, Okay,
- 32:28Speaker 6: this is when I need to bring someone else in
- 32:30Speaker 6: to help me, and like, yeah, my first high was
- 32:33Speaker 6: an all rounder, just someone to just come in and
- 32:35Speaker 6: just help doing all the day to day tasks.
- 32:38Speaker 5: Like that helps you realize what you probably need help
- 32:40Speaker 5: in and wear and with you know, doing our own
- 32:43Speaker 5: business as well, we have only kind of just even
- 32:46Speaker 5: started the hiring process.
- 32:49Speaker 4: But what I.
- 32:49Speaker 5: Find really helpful with that is because we've done a
- 32:52Speaker 5: lot of it to start, we do have a basic
- 32:54Speaker 5: understanding of what that role entails. I find that that
- 32:58Speaker 5: makes it really helpful actually when you're managing someone because
- 33:02Speaker 5: then you have a basic understanding of how long certain
- 33:05Speaker 5: tasks take, yeah, how difficult they are, so that you
- 33:07Speaker 5: can kind of have a little bit of empathy and
- 33:09Speaker 5: understanding with the people that.
- 33:11Speaker 4: You work with.
- 33:11Speaker 5: Absolutely, and I always felt that's I think that's a
- 33:14Speaker 5: great piece of advice. But I'd love to know what,
- 33:17Speaker 5: Like if you're going to give a checklist of like
- 33:19Speaker 5: five boring things people need to do before they start
- 33:22Speaker 5: their business.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Okay, what is it? Make sure that you have a
- 33:25Speaker 4: business bank account.
- 33:26Speaker 6: Don't just have everything going into your personal bank account
- 33:28Speaker 6: because you'd be paying way more tax. Number two, if
- 33:32Speaker 6: you think this thing's going to turn into something big?
- 33:36Speaker 6: And I know a lot of people when they first start,
- 33:37Speaker 6: they going, nah, might business on ever turn big? I
- 33:39Speaker 6: never thought fate would be big.
- 33:40Speaker 4: Hello.
- 33:42Speaker 6: Look up on ip Australia. The trademarking of the business name.
- 33:46Speaker 6: So if anyone else owns the trademark of your business
- 33:48Speaker 6: name in a similar category, and if you are serious enough,
- 33:53Speaker 6: apply for that trademark if no one else has it.
- 33:55Speaker 7: How much does a trademark cost?
- 33:56Speaker 6: It varies just depending but it might be like some
- 34:00Speaker 6: you could apply and it could be like four hundred dollars.
- 34:02Speaker 6: Some could be five hundred, some could be a thousand,
- 34:04Speaker 6: And I don't know if that depends on like the.
- 34:07Speaker 4: Class that it's in or whatever.
- 34:08Speaker 6: But like I've applied for a few over the years,
- 34:10Speaker 6: and one might be five hundred, one might be a thousand.
- 34:13Speaker 4: So what have I done.
- 34:14Speaker 6: I've done, have a business bank account, look up trademarking,
- 34:17Speaker 6: get all your handles and your domain and everything. Like
- 34:20Speaker 6: I would say, have an accountant, like help you set
- 34:23Speaker 6: up the business name and register it, and you know,
- 34:27Speaker 6: start as a sole trader if you're just on your own,
- 34:30Speaker 6: and then be mindful that like once it starts growing
- 34:33Speaker 6: that little bit more and maybe more revenues coming in,
- 34:35Speaker 6: you might want to look at switching to being a
- 34:37Speaker 6: company instead of a sole trader for tax purposes. And
- 34:40Speaker 6: number five, I would say, like have fun with the journey.
- 34:44Speaker 6: It can be super overwhelming to start a business, and
- 34:47Speaker 6: especially now with how many businesses there are out there,
- 34:51Speaker 6: and like it's so easy to you know, compare and go, oh,
- 34:55Speaker 6: look at that person doing that, but it's you've got
- 34:58Speaker 6: to remember, Like even with me and Fate, like my
- 35:01Speaker 6: Instagram had zero followers. Once upon a time, Fate was
- 35:04Speaker 6: getting five orders a day once upon a time, you know,
- 35:07Speaker 6: like we all start at the beginning, and it's really
- 35:11Speaker 6: important to just like have fun with your business, enjoy
- 35:14Speaker 6: every moment, even if it's extremely disheartening at some stages,
- 35:18Speaker 6: and just like don't lose sight of like the reason
- 35:20Speaker 6: why you started it in the first place, and think
- 35:23Speaker 6: what would Britney do?
- 35:26Speaker 3: You know?
- 35:27Speaker 6: Sometimes you know, I'll be going even through stressful times myself,
- 35:31Speaker 6: and I think.
- 35:31Speaker 4: What would Britney do? Like I just I think what
- 35:33Speaker 4: would I do? You know, I feel stressed myself.
- 35:37Speaker 6: And I've had people message me that too, like if
- 35:39Speaker 6: they're doing something scarier even at work, or like they're
- 35:42Speaker 6: going to talk to their manager or whatever they've said,
- 35:44Speaker 6: like I wanted to reach out and ask, like what
- 35:46Speaker 6: would you do?
- 35:47Speaker 4: And on the book tour, I had someone at our Miranda.
- 35:49Speaker 6: Store saying, like she came to me with like a
- 35:51Speaker 6: scenario about her current boss and ask me for advice,
- 35:54Speaker 6: Like I would like to know what you would do
- 35:55Speaker 6: if you and me, And I don't think that's like
- 35:57Speaker 6: the biggest compliment ever that someone could think what would
- 36:00Speaker 6: really do in this scenario? But yeah, have fun with
- 36:03Speaker 6: it and start a business for the right reasons. You know,
- 36:07Speaker 6: it's one thing, and it's amazing to start a business
- 36:10Speaker 6: because you want to turn into a.
- 36:11Speaker 4: Multi million dollar company and whatever.
- 36:13Speaker 6: But I think you've got to have a few more
- 36:15Speaker 6: reasons other than wanting to be like a financial success
- 36:17Speaker 6: to start a business. And I think you'll have more
- 36:20Speaker 6: of a financial success if you are starting it for
- 36:23Speaker 6: reasons other than that. You know, when I started Fader,
- 36:26Speaker 6: I was just a girl who was wanting to try
- 36:28Speaker 6: anything and have a bit of fun and see where
- 36:30Speaker 6: it went, you know, and then the success came along
- 36:34Speaker 6: with that. So I'd say, like, have fun. Make sure
- 36:36Speaker 6: you're doing something that you're at least half passionate about,
- 36:39Speaker 6: because there's nothing worse. I can't imagine, like running a
- 36:41Speaker 6: business that you absolutely despise.
- 36:43Speaker 7: Yeah, you don't want to care about it.
- 36:45Speaker 6: I don't want to end up hating it and be
- 36:46Speaker 6: like fuck this, which I'm sure a lot of people
- 36:48Speaker 6: find themselves in those.
- 36:49Speaker 7: You do have to go in with a bit of
- 36:51Speaker 7: love for it, you do. Is there a moments where you're.
- 36:53Speaker 5: Like, yeah, exactly, but I love it, so I keep
- 36:56Speaker 5: doing it.
- 36:57Speaker 6: Have fun with a lean on others for advice, don't
- 37:00Speaker 6: be afraid to ask questions, ask for help from friends, families, colleagues,
- 37:05Speaker 6: reach out to someone on LinkedIn, you know, join community
- 37:09Speaker 6: groups and yeah, just have fun.
- 37:11Speaker 4: That'll be tip number five.
- 37:12Speaker 7: Snaps to you, babe.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Yeah, thank youngulations, thank you so happy for you.
- 37:17Speaker 3: And tell the chicks where can they get a copy
- 37:20Speaker 3: of the book.
- 37:20Speaker 6: You can get it exclusively online through book Topia. It's
- 37:25Speaker 6: always like linked in my Instagram whatever. You can just
- 37:27Speaker 6: go to book Topia. So if you're near any five
- 37:30Speaker 6: of our Fate stores. We've got three New South Wales

- 37:49Speaker 6: I'll figure it out here in our Fate stores and
- 37:52Speaker 6: on book Topiah.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was so incredible, and congratulations again, and
