- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We're doing a short series on perspectives that go against conventional wisdom.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And if you're just not joining us, I encourage you to go back and catch the last few entries in this series.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Today's episode is not really about writing, it's much more about life.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I've noticed something during my years as a pastor, educator, and now as a full-time writer.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Here's my observation.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: People in creative fields seem to be at a greater risk for sabotaging their lives.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: In fact, there's a common narrative among creative types that giving birth to your art is by definition a painful, destructive process.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: And people who live by this code think of themselves as tortured artists.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: They usually suffer from addictions to drugs or alcohol, and they're convinced that their darkness and their suffering is an essential part of their creative work.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Here's a case in point.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: There's a group actually known as the 27 Club.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And these are famous musicians who died at age 27.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: This club includes, or I should say rather, this notorious club includes Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, and others.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: The greatness of these people's music is never in question, but you can't help but wonder how much more music could they have given to the world if their lives had not been cut short by substance abuse, suicide, or other circumstances that were fueled by a reckless approach to life.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Over the last few years, I've watched a few different people in my space of online business just honestly crash and burn.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And it seems to be the same pattern over and over again.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: They build a successful business from scratch, they work hard and they become really successful, their marriages crash and burn, and they have to start over.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: And in all the cases that I'm thinking of, the person came back with a healthy life and a successful business, but they had to go through a terrible scorching fire to get there.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Now I'm not coming from a place of judgment, not at all, but I'm coming from a place of compassion and empathy and humility.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: After all, I work on the assumption that all of us are just one or two bad decisions away from a complete train wreck in our lives.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: I've been around the block of life enough to know that we're all capable of bad decisions that can totally destroy us.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And as you get more successful in your life and in your writing, keep in mind that anybody can fall.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: And the more successful you are, and the more people that know you, and the more that the bigger your platform is, the harder you're gonna fall and the more it's gonna hurt.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: So keep watch over yourself, your relationships, and your mental and emotional health and your habits.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: If you reach a level of success that is bigger than your own self-control, you're eventually going to crash and burn, and it's just a matter of time.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: And and my hope and my prayer for all of us is that we can all move forward with as much humility and self-discipline as we can possibly muster.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: Are you watching your life and your habits closely so that you can avoid your own personal train wreck?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Well, before I close up today's episode, and yeah, that was kind of a heavy episode, I guess, but it's just something I've been thinking about a lot.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: But speaking of people trying to go it alone and and you know having train wrecks and just trying to um just trying to summon all their strength by themselves, you know, the key is you don't have to do it by yourself.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: You need a great community.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: And that's why I want to mention the Daily Writer Club to you today at the end of this episode.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: If you're looking for a community of enthusiastic and success-minded writers who are launching books and growing their writing business and becoming stronger personally and professionally, I think the Daily Writer Club is the missing piece that you've been searching for.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Members have access to weekly writing sprints and live calls with expert teaching, an active online community, access to retreats and in-person events, and probably most important of all, they have access to a clear pathway for growing their writing platform and business.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: You can check it out at dailywriterlife.comslash club.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: And of course, this isn't just about business and writing and books and all that stuff.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: As good as it is, this is really about your life.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, isn't your life and your talent and your dreams, aren't those valuable enough to help secure those and protect those by being part of a good community?
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Well, that's exactly what the Daily Rider Club is.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: So I hope that you check it out.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: We have a lot of people there who are having some great success.
