- 0:00Speaker 1: Football and to get ready for a weekend of high
- 0:03Speaker 1: school football. That's up next here on Sports Radio AM
- 0:06Speaker 1: 1300 The Zone and where you can always catch us
- 0:08Speaker 1: for free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 0:10Speaker 2: We welcome you back here to Sports Radio AM 1300
- 0:17Speaker 2: The Zone.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And for bumping back with Buffett on a Thursday, it
- 0:22Speaker 1: means it's time for a visit with Raj Raj. How
- 0:24Speaker 1: about Jake dipping deep into the well on this one, Raj? Whoa.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Well, Here's my first thought.
- 0:31Speaker 2: I'm glad he didn't let the entire song run or
- 0:34Speaker 2: he better have it on delay.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I did.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I did see that coming up a little bit later on. Oh,
- 0:40Speaker 3: that's good. It's good. So there's an unmentionable in there, huh?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that is, uh, boy, that one, I did not
- 0:46Speaker 2: expect that one. That's pretty cool though.
- 0:48Speaker 3: West Nashville ballroom gown. Is that the name of it?
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's, I think that's just, uh, the, uh,
- 0:54Speaker 2: the story would be going against the, uh, Maybe the
- 0:58Speaker 2: aristocratic stereotype young lady who wanted to break away from
- 1:05Speaker 2: that lifestyle.
- 1:08Speaker 1: So this is a runaway bride kind of story then? Yes.
- 1:14Speaker 3: A hitchhiker.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, listen.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Yeah. She writes a letter.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I'll just say that. She writes a letter. Okay.
- 1:22Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:23Speaker 3: What album is that one from?
- 1:25Speaker 2: That is from Living and Dying in Three-Quarter Time.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Okay. Okay. Man, that's old. That's 74. Sure is. Wow.
- 1:30Speaker 3: How about that? Okay. Yeah.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Well, maybe it's happened, folks, since this is the first
- 1:37Speaker 1: time since 1969 that Texas will play Tennessee. I saw
- 1:41Speaker 1: something I'd never seen before, because I read about the
- 1:45Speaker 1: last time they played the January 1st, 69 Cotton Bowl,
- 1:49Speaker 1: which was really kind of the launching pad. for the
- 1:52Speaker 1: unbeaten 69 national championship season. They're coming off that first
- 1:56Speaker 1: year of converting to the wishbone. They had a loss
- 1:58Speaker 1: and a tie early with Tech and Houston, and then
- 2:01Speaker 1: they turned it around after that with James Street taking
- 2:04Speaker 1: over quarterback for Bill Bradley, and the.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Rest, as they say, is history. They win the rest
- 2:08Speaker 3: of their games.
- 2:08Speaker 1: That year, and then, of course, the next two years
- 2:11Speaker 1: going unbeaten, at least in the regular season. They finally
- 2:14Speaker 1: had the streak, snapped at 30 when they lost to
- 2:17Speaker 1: Notre Dame in the January of 71 Cotton Bowl. But
- 2:21Speaker 1: when I was going through that, and I'd read all
- 2:25Speaker 1: that stuff in the past, I saw something because social
- 2:28Speaker 1: media will find it. Somebody had a little recap of
- 2:34Speaker 1: a long touchdown pass that James Street through to Cotton
- 2:39Speaker 1: Spire in that Cotton Bowl game against Tennessee, which Texas
- 2:44Speaker 1: won 36-13. So I guess you can see just about
- 2:48Speaker 1: anything eventually off of that, but there's a lot of
- 2:52Speaker 1: themes going into this game this weekend, aren't there?
- 2:55Speaker 3: Quickly, can I backtrack?
- 2:56Speaker 2: Is that why you picked the song, Jake, because of
- 2:58Speaker 2: the Tennessee connection?
- 3:00Speaker 3: That's the one. That's why. Okay. That's why you went
- 3:02Speaker 3: with that.
- 3:03Speaker 2: He also has a song called Meet Me in Memphis.
- 3:06Speaker 3: But I guess maybe you can save that for another
- 3:09Speaker 3: flight to Memphis. Eventually when we go to Ole Miss,
- 3:12Speaker 3: we'll have a chance for that during basketball season. Maybe. Yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 3: that's true. Absolutely.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Lots of storylines.
- 3:20Speaker 2: The obvious kind of cliche ones, obviously the UT and
- 3:24Speaker 2: the orange and all that. And then you elevate it
- 3:26Speaker 2: to the Manning connection and things like that. But yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 2: I'm sure Sark talked to you last night. Talk to
- 3:33Speaker 2: me about, today. This is about going on the road
- 3:35Speaker 2: and getting an SEC win to start off a run
- 3:39Speaker 2: of nine opponents where currently seven.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Of them are ranked. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And the one that's not ranked was ranked pretty high
- 3:46Speaker 2: a few weeks ago in Oklahoma.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt about that.
- 3:49Speaker 1: And then the other thing, and he did tell me
- 3:52Speaker 1: this last night, we did not talk about it on
- 3:54Speaker 1: the air when we were recording because in fact, it
- 3:57Speaker 1: didn't even come up until after we got done and
- 3:59Speaker 1: we got off the air. And that's when the stuff
- 4:01Speaker 1: had really started to filter through.
- 4:04Speaker 3: That the president was coming to the game.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And that's when Sark mentioned to me, and he said
- 4:08Speaker 1: it again on the Zoom, about when a president comes
- 4:14Speaker 1: to a sporting event like he did with Alabama LSU
- 4:17Speaker 1: in 2019 when Sark was on Nick Saban's staff, if
- 4:20Speaker 1: the president gets up for any reason, go to the bathroom,
- 4:23Speaker 1: change sections, coming in, going out, all communication is cut off. there,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and he said that included the headset, head coaches' headsets
- 4:33Speaker 1: out to the green dot or up to the press
- 4:37Speaker 1: box or whatever. It's cut off on that, and that's
- 4:40Speaker 1: kind of an adjustment to be made, I guess, hopefully.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Or down to Will Matthews? Yeah, yeah, I sort of say.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I guess maybe it's all about the wireless stuff that
- 4:49Speaker 1: happens there. Hopefully, it doesn't knock us off the air.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I don't think it will.
- 4:52Speaker 2: No, I know, but I wonder if that would affect
- 4:55Speaker 2: It might.
- 4:56Speaker 1: It's a good, that's a very good, put it this way.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Not that you'll have any heads up.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I started to say, if it affects coaches' communication on
- 5:07Speaker 1: the sidelines up to the press box and out to
- 5:10Speaker 1: the player with the green dot on the helmet, then
- 5:12Speaker 1: it probably would knock out the wireless communication with the sideline.
- 5:18Speaker 1: You know, our broadcast operations manager, Terry Kelly, told our engineer,
- 5:22Speaker 1: Greg Klingensmith, that.
- 5:23Speaker 3: His response was, oh, well, I didn't need that.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I was going to say that he's got enough on
- 5:30Speaker 3: his mind. Exactly.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Um, the, uh, so the, the student athlete availability report,
- 5:37Speaker 1: the injury report came out and, um, the only thing
- 5:40Speaker 1: that I think raised an eyebrow was Hollywood smothers being
- 5:44Speaker 1: listed as questionable on, on the list. And that, and
- 5:48Speaker 1: I would imagine that's where they're really going to have
- 5:50Speaker 1: to lean into Raleigh Brown and to a lesser extent
- 5:53Speaker 1: to Derek Cooper.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:56Speaker 2: And, you know, he mentioned, he mentioned Michael Terry again.
- 5:59Speaker 2: So I don't, I don't know if he's a guy
- 6:01Speaker 2: that could be elevated to, you know, be in the
- 6:03Speaker 2: rotation like that. But again, we we've seen this running
- 6:07Speaker 2: back room thin out real quickly over the years. So wouldn't,
- 6:10Speaker 2: wouldn't be unheard of to think about that, but yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 2: And I just keep going back to, you just want
- 6:17Speaker 2: to see this, passing offense get a little more explosive
- 6:22Speaker 2: and be a little more dynamic and i get you
- 6:24Speaker 2: got to run the ball and and smothers has been
- 6:26Speaker 2: outstanding uh but but i i think they're really going
- 6:30Speaker 2: to press the issue here uh to get this passing
- 6:33Speaker 2: game going saturday.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Hey i'm telling you i'm calling it right now you
- 6:38Speaker 1: know when you and i and we'll get together to
- 6:40Speaker 1: discuss what our keys to the game end uh, game
- 6:42Speaker 1: is going to be, uh, my key is going to be, uh,
- 6:45Speaker 1: the Texas wide receivers against the corners for Tennessee. If
- 6:49Speaker 1: nothing else to talk about Cam Coleman going up against
- 6:52Speaker 1: his teammate for three years at Auburn K and Lee, the,
- 6:56Speaker 1: the starting left corner for the volunteers. Yeah.
- 7:00Speaker 3: I mean that, I guess we're going to get that
- 7:01Speaker 3: a lot.
- 7:02Speaker 2: And, uh, you know, once we get into sec play is,
- 7:04Speaker 2: you know, the, the possible connections with, with Coleman, then
- 7:07Speaker 2: there's a, uh, you know, another interesting one in, uh,
- 7:10Speaker 2: Metcalf who played against Texas last year, TJ Metcalf in
- 7:15Speaker 2: the bowl game from Michigan.
- 7:16Speaker 3: And I think he had.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Some bulletin board material this week about Texas and physicality
- 7:22Speaker 2: and all that. So I think that might be a
- 7:25Speaker 2: matchup to, to watch as well. I mean, but yes,
- 7:29Speaker 2: I agree. I think the, the, the Texas receivers against
- 7:33Speaker 2: that back end for the just, just, It's got to
- 7:37Speaker 2: happen sometime where they're going to kind of take off,
- 7:40Speaker 2: you would think.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And I would also say that it's going to be
- 7:43Speaker 1: interesting to see what Will Matthews, what Will Muschamp has
- 7:49Speaker 1: dialed up to deal with Faison Brandon, to deal with
- 7:52Speaker 1: Deshaun Bishop and DeJuan Morris and that running game for
- 7:56Speaker 1: the Volunteers, but especially, as Sark says, in Josh Heupel's offense,
- 8:01Speaker 1: they love to take deep shots over Darius Jackson or
- 8:03Speaker 1: Braylon Staley or Mike Matthews. They like to take their
- 8:07Speaker 1: shots downfield, and the Texas defense will have to be
- 8:10Speaker 1: buttoned up for that.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and we've seen it with young quarterbacks.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Typically, that's kind of their easiest read is that quick read,
- 8:18Speaker 2: the deep shot. It's what I'm sure Muschamp would like
- 8:22Speaker 2: to do is make Brandon go through progressions and have
- 8:27Speaker 2: to you know, go to plan B, plan C, because,
- 8:31Speaker 2: you know, that's typically a guy that's playing his fourth
- 8:34Speaker 2: college game isn't quite as comfortable with that as, you know,
- 8:38Speaker 2: throwing the deep ball. So for sure, that's going to
- 8:40Speaker 2: be something I'm sure they want to try to exploit.
- 8:42Speaker 2: And then, like you said, those big running backs, I mean,
- 8:45Speaker 2: they're averaging a ton of yards, but let's be honest,
- 8:47Speaker 2: you know, a lot of those yards were against Furman
- 8:49Speaker 2: and Kennesaw State. So we'll see how they do against
- 8:53Speaker 2: a pretty good Texas defense.
- 8:55Speaker 1: No doubt about it. Roger Wallace joining us for a
- 8:56Speaker 1: few more minutes here on 1300 The Zone. Let's jump
- 8:58Speaker 1: to high school. The games in the KXAN plus slash
- 9:05Speaker 1: KBVO slash Nextar family of high school football televised offerings.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Let me put it that way. Includes tonight, old, old matchup.
- 9:18Speaker 1: How old? Well, Leander and Cedar Park are the first
- 9:21Speaker 1: two schools in the Leander ISD. Now, Leander's been around
- 9:24Speaker 1: a long, long time. Cedar Park has only had a
- 9:26Speaker 1: varsity program since 1997, but they developed pretty good rivalry.
- 9:30Speaker 1: It kind of got splintered and separated for a while
- 9:32Speaker 1: when they were in separate classifications.
- 9:34Speaker 3: Now, they're both 6A schools.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I don't know if it's correct to say that Cedar
- 9:41Speaker 1: Park has emerged the favorite in this district. After all,
- 9:44Speaker 1: Vandegrift is Vandegrift, and Huddo's there as well. But what
- 9:47Speaker 1: do you make of the T-Wolves getting ready to take
- 9:49Speaker 1: on Leander in this game that you and Keith Moreland
- 9:51Speaker 1: have tonight from Gupton?
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they're really good, and I think you can,
- 9:56Speaker 2: you know, they had the one close game against Midway, but,
- 9:58Speaker 2: you know, they seem to kind of have answers on
- 10:02Speaker 2: both sides. They've got a big veteran quarterback in David Cooper, 6'4,
- 10:07Speaker 2: over 200 pounds, third-year starter. But, yeah, they, you know,
- 10:12Speaker 2: and Michael Quintero talked to Keith and I about we
- 10:14Speaker 2: think we have something built. for a December run. They've
- 10:18Speaker 2: made it to the second round in a couple of years.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Interesting kind of footnote here is that the coaching matchup,
- 10:24Speaker 2: Ahmad Zayden, the first-year head coach, not only worked with
- 10:28Speaker 2: Michael Quintero twice, he said he was kind of his mentor,
- 10:31Speaker 2: and their deaths were together at both Cedar Park and
- 10:35Speaker 2: at Colleyville, in Colleyville as well. So a guy that
- 10:39Speaker 2: obviously has learned a lot from Quintero, and I'm sure
- 10:42Speaker 2: Quintero has fond memories thoughts about him. So, you know,
- 10:45Speaker 2: kind of a sidebar. I don't think that's going to
- 10:47Speaker 2: matter when they kick it off. I think, I think
- 10:49Speaker 2: Cedar park is pretty good. Leander, you know, they played
- 10:52Speaker 2: in Pflugerville really tough in our first Friday night KXN
- 10:55Speaker 2: plus game. They've kind of taken their lumps, uh, in
- 10:58Speaker 2: two of the other three, they have their win over Aiken.
- 11:00Speaker 2: So we'll see if they can, you know, as I
- 11:02Speaker 2: always say, Craig, get it to the second half. Now
- 11:04Speaker 2: I was dead wrong last Friday because, uh, you know, uh,
- 11:09Speaker 2: we saw that, uh, legacy ranch team, Just really surprised,
- 11:14Speaker 2: I think, a lot of people in what they did
- 11:16Speaker 2: to Pflugerville. So I don't take anything for granted, but
- 11:22Speaker 2: I think this is going to be an uphill battle
- 11:23Speaker 2: for Leander tonight.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Let me get some thoughts from you on the other thing.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And here's my theory. That part of the reason that
- 11:32Speaker 1: we are seeing, and I think this is a way
- 11:34Speaker 1: to put it. Greg Tepper and I were talking about
- 11:35Speaker 1: this on Tuesday.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Okay.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I hesitate to use the word parity, but put it
- 11:41Speaker 1: this way, a tightening of the gap, a narrowing of
- 11:45Speaker 1: the gap, if you will, between the upper echelon 6A
- 11:50Speaker 1: schools in this area and those who have been down
- 11:53Speaker 1: below them for a while and the floor is rising
- 11:56Speaker 1: a little bit, maybe the ceiling being lowered a little
- 11:59Speaker 1: bit in these districts. I think it's a direct result
- 12:03Speaker 1: of three 6A districts for the first time ever in
- 12:06Speaker 1: the area. And maybe the big three, as we've known
- 12:11Speaker 1: them over the past several years, Westlake, Lake Travis, and Vandegrift, look.
- 12:15Speaker 3: A little more vulnerable.
- 12:17Speaker 1: So in 25-6A, where we saw Round Rock get a
- 12:22Speaker 1: non-district victory over Vandegrift, They're 3-1, but you've got Cedar
- 12:27Speaker 1: Ridge is 4-0 in there. Westlake is the only one
- 12:29Speaker 1: with a non-district game because of the odd number of teams.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Somebody's going to have either an open date or a
- 12:34Speaker 1: non-district game every week. And they have an interesting one
- 12:38Speaker 1: in Midland Lee. That's part of what you guys have
- 12:40Speaker 1: on KXM +. And then Lake Travis is playing McNeil,
- 12:44Speaker 1: which the numbers would say they should.
- 12:47Speaker 3: handle their business on that.
- 12:48Speaker 1: But I think there's a little more unknown between that
- 12:51Speaker 1: and also 26 6A since Dripping Springs lost to Round Rock.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Bowie's off to a 3-1 start. Hayes is off to
- 12:59Speaker 1: a 3-1 start. I think there's more unknowns this year
- 13:02Speaker 1: in 6A around the area than in past years.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think there's any question that, you know,
- 13:06Speaker 2: you've kind of penciled in one of those big three
- 13:09Speaker 2: to at least make a deep run and, you know,
- 13:13Speaker 2: good chance they get to Arlington. So I don't know
- 13:15Speaker 2: what to make of Uh, for instance, your game last
- 13:18Speaker 2: Friday that you had on KXM plus with round rock, uh,
- 13:22Speaker 2: beating Vandergrift and the fashion, uh, that they did it when,
- 13:25Speaker 2: you know, they needed a big play and they got
- 13:27Speaker 2: it late in the ball game. Um, and then, you know,
- 13:30Speaker 2: like Travis has had some struggles, but they played a,
- 13:33Speaker 2: a really tough non district. I think Cedar Ridge can
- 13:35Speaker 2: be six and Oh, uh, going into there. Uh, I
- 13:38Speaker 2: think it's their next toughest is either like Travis or West.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I can't remember which, but I think they'll win their
- 13:43Speaker 2: next two. So that's a program that, uh, I think
- 13:46Speaker 2: kind of falls into that category too. But yeah, I mean,
- 13:50Speaker 2: you saw two of those schools, one that's been there
- 13:52Speaker 2: and one that Round Rock seems to always have enough
- 13:56Speaker 2: talent to at least figure into it. But maybe this
- 14:00Speaker 2: is the year that Cody Moore has something.
- 14:03Speaker 3: To kind of get them over the hump and make
- 14:04Speaker 3: a run. See what you think of this.
- 14:06Speaker 1: If somebody were to ask me if there was a
- 14:09Speaker 1: game this week where you said the outcome will show
- 14:13Speaker 1: me a lot about that team, The game that I
- 14:17Speaker 1: would pick would be a 3-0 Anderson at a 4-0
- 14:21Speaker 1: Bernie champion. The computer likes champion by like 16 points.
- 14:24Speaker 1: But Donald Hatcher's team has been pretty impressive so far.
- 14:29Speaker 1: For two years now, yeah. And that's what kind of
- 14:32Speaker 1: we've talked about is he's built a program.
- 14:35Speaker 3: So, yeah, for sure.
- 14:36Speaker 2: We're going to get them in the old version of
- 14:41Speaker 2: Taco Shack, Shoal Creek Showdown in a few weeks, unfortunately.
- 14:44Speaker 2: McCallum's a little bit down, so I don't know how
- 14:46Speaker 2: that's going to look. But yeah, I think that's a
- 14:49Speaker 2: good call. And the other thing, Craig, is now we
- 14:52Speaker 2: have more of these districts, it feels like to me,
- 14:55Speaker 2: at the higher classifications where you have schools in and
- 14:58Speaker 2: out of what we call our market. So we're not
- 15:01Speaker 2: intimately familiar as much with a Bernie Champion or the
- 15:05Speaker 2: Colleens or the College Stations, or if you go down south,
- 15:08Speaker 2: New Braunfels and things like that. So it's not quite
- 15:12Speaker 2: as second nature as when all these districts seem to
- 15:15Speaker 2: be clustered with just Austin area high schools.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Tonight on KBVO, you can catch Roger and Keith bringing
- 15:22Speaker 1: you Leander and Cedar Park from Gupton Stadium. Tomorrow, it's
- 15:27Speaker 1: our own Cameron Parker joining Keith, right, for that Eastview-Hutto
- 15:30Speaker 1: matchup in Georgetown?
- 15:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a Hutto team that, you know, they only lost,
- 15:34Speaker 2: they scored 50. So we'll see that one. That might
- 15:37Speaker 2: be interesting. And then you've got the Westlake and Lee.
- 15:40Speaker 2: You can also peek in tonight, I believe, on KXAM +.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Give it a shot.
- 15:45Speaker 2: But McNeil and Lake Travis from Kelly Reeves. So there's
- 15:50Speaker 2: a few options there. But, yeah, we're going to go
- 15:53Speaker 2: out to Gupton and take a look at this Cedar
- 15:57Speaker 2: Park team that seems to be pretty complete.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Take on Leander. Okay.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Appreciate the time. See you at the airport dark and
- 16:03Speaker 1: early tomorrow morning, right?
- 16:05Speaker 3: Bright and early. Thanks, Craig. You bet. That's Roger Wallace.
- 16:09Speaker 1: You can catch him and Keith Moreland tonight, KBVO with
- 16:11Speaker 1: Leander against Cedar Park.
- 16:13Speaker 3: And again, there's several offerings.
- 16:15Speaker 1: If you go to KXAM +, both tonight and tomorrow night,
- 16:18Speaker 1: especially tomorrow, there's several different offerings that are available there. Jake,
- 16:26Speaker 1: would you like to guess what the computer thinks of
- 16:29Speaker 1: Brenham and Bastrop?
- 16:31Speaker 3: For my friends in Bastrop, I might not want to
- 16:33Speaker 3: guess on this game. I'm going to go with 49
- 16:35Speaker 3: for Brenham. You're pretty close. 53. Yeah. The Cubs are really,
- 16:39Speaker 3: really good, and the Bears are really, really injured. All right.
- 16:42Speaker 3: Coming up, we bring you Inconceivable here on 1300 The Zone.
