- 0:06Speaker 1: Good morning sports fans of folks. Then it's me and
- 0:10Speaker 1: you know what's back here with the sports show. Kevin
- 0:12Speaker 1: is off to the London Stadium in London, no Less,
- 0:16Speaker 1: to watch the athletics there this morning, this afternoon, whenever
- 0:21Speaker 1: it is. He's going. I have my Seasiders radio co
- 0:25Speaker 1: presenter here. I've got Charlie Prescott. Good morning, Charlie, good morning.
- 0:30Speaker 1: How are we doing this morning? Yeah? Good.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I feel like we need to bring energy after the
- 0:34Speaker 2: last guys.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Now, yeah, I mean it's it's always a bit of
- 0:38Speaker 1: a comdown after the breakfast show thanks to obviously Taylor
- 0:43Speaker 1: and Rosford. The Helen and Helen I couldn't remember. I
- 0:50Speaker 1: was trying to get Helen, but I couldn't. It was
- 0:52Speaker 1: on the tip of me tongue. But as you may
- 0:54Speaker 1: already know, I'm terrible with names anyway. Yeah, thanks for
- 0:58Speaker 1: the guys for the Bexers show was really good. I've
- 1:01Speaker 1: got Charlie in this morning. We're going to be talking
- 1:04Speaker 1: about the World Cup. We was hopefully it was going
- 1:06Speaker 1: to be a World Cup special for Sunday evening, but
- 1:09Speaker 1: that's going a little bit flat unfortunately, because as we
- 1:13Speaker 1: all know, Wednesday night it didn't really go to plan,
- 1:16Speaker 1: but there you go. These things happen. But we're also
- 1:20Speaker 1: going to have a look at focusing the victor and
- 1:22Speaker 1: what we think was going to be happening later on
- 1:25Speaker 1: in this season coming up for twenty six twenty seven season.
- 1:29Speaker 1: As I said, got Charlie here with me. He's better
- 1:34Speaker 1: than me at talking, so we'll stick him on. We're
- 1:37Speaker 1: going to play the first song. I did ask keV
- 1:40Speaker 1: the other day. I said, can you put a load
- 1:42Speaker 1: of England songs on the list? And he said to well,
- 1:47Speaker 1: I'll do it. He said, but you know it might
- 1:50Speaker 1: be in my back far a bit and said, well, yeah,
- 1:52Speaker 1: probably will do, but we need to we need to
- 1:55Speaker 1: be ready anyway. So we're going to play this one.
- 1:58Speaker 1: It's quite quite actually, it is a World Cup song
- 2:02Speaker 1: and it's called back Home. This is England's nineteen seventies
- 2:07Speaker 1: go a World Cup song. This is England World Cup
- 2:11Speaker 1: squad back Hord. Not something we normally play on radio
- 2:15Speaker 1: focus them, but here ego, Yeah, back Home. That's something
- 3:13Speaker 1: we'll be doing on probably Sunday morning after the bron
- 3:16Speaker 1: bronze game. They called it now isn't it My day? Third?
- 3:19Speaker 1: Fourth place playoff. But yeah, just talking off with that
- 3:23Speaker 1: Charlie with that one. He said he's never heard this one,
- 3:25Speaker 1: and I forgot Charlie's born in what year? Two thousand
- 3:29Speaker 1: and five? Two thousand and five. Oh my god, you
- 3:32Speaker 1: did cut turn on the Oh god, you've never said
- 3:37Speaker 1: you've never really suffered England not qualifying for a World Cup?
- 3:39Speaker 1: Then have you?
- 3:40Speaker 2: Maybe were talking about this on Tuesday saying you have
- 3:42Speaker 2: to grow up with England.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean yeah, when I was at school, I
- 3:45Speaker 1: mean something four World Cup. You know, everybody expected England
- 3:48Speaker 1: to qualify. And I still remember now watching the last
- 3:51Speaker 1: qualifier against Poland when Jan tom and Eski I think
- 3:55Speaker 1: his name was the words to that effect, you know
- 3:58Speaker 1: what I'm like with names, and Brian Cluffe called him
- 4:01Speaker 1: a clown and he had the game of his life
- 4:04Speaker 1: and it was a one one drawer in the end,
- 4:06Speaker 1: but England needed to win to qualify, and yeah, and
- 4:09Speaker 1: Poland went on to finish third. I think it was
- 4:11Speaker 1: in the seventy four World Cup after that, So there
- 4:14Speaker 1: were no mugs.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I feel like it's just a given of people of
- 4:17Speaker 2: my age demographic just always assumed that England are going
- 4:20Speaker 2: to are going to get.
- 4:21Speaker 1: To the Yeah, you're fortunate enough to be you know
- 4:24Speaker 1: of an era where England have qualify for everything and
- 4:27Speaker 1: qualify quite easily now to be fair, I mean back
- 4:30Speaker 1: there in that particular group for qualifying, we had Poland
- 4:33Speaker 1: and Wales. That was it, Poland and Wales. Yeah, there's
- 4:37Speaker 1: so manly countries now. I mean how many teams participated
- 4:40Speaker 1: in this one? Forty eight? Yeah, forty eight, I mean unbelievable.
- 4:45Speaker 1: I mean sixty six World Cup. I think I was sixteen,
- 4:50Speaker 1: So you know, it's all it's so different nowadays it's
- 4:54Speaker 1: all about money, obviously FIFA trying to anyway, folksing in
- 5:03Speaker 1: Victor mate, we know a lot something that we know
- 5:06Speaker 1: a lot about. Yeah. Yeah, we did our first commentary
- 5:10Speaker 1: on Tuesday evening when we went to Cray Wanderers and yeah,
- 5:16Speaker 1: what do you think of that?
- 5:19Speaker 2: I think as a singular performance it wasn't great. But
- 5:23Speaker 2: taking into account the other couple of games I've been
- 5:25Speaker 2: out this season, I think you can see Jay and
- 5:29Speaker 2: the backroom team are trying to continue the sort of
- 5:33Speaker 2: legacy they left off last season with that back five,
- 5:35Speaker 2: the wingers playing high and then obviously pigs and whoever's
- 5:38Speaker 2: going to partner the Pigs this season upfront.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean for those that obviously didn't go or
- 5:43Speaker 1: didn't listen in we played with a back four for
- 5:46Speaker 1: the first time for a long long time and it
- 5:49Speaker 1: didn't work, did it? No?
- 5:50Speaker 2: And he said that in his postmatch she said it
- 5:52Speaker 2: was about getting minutes in and shape change. But shape
- 5:55Speaker 2: change wasn't great.
- 5:56Speaker 1: So maybe they're going to maybe these are the sort
- 5:59Speaker 1: of games to play, you know, obviously try out. It's
- 6:01Speaker 1: only a preseason friendly and I think, you know, I'm
- 6:04Speaker 1: quite open to say I don't really care about the
- 6:06Speaker 1: results of preseason. It's just you get the minutes in
- 6:09Speaker 1: the legs, like he said, and no injuries. No injuries
- 6:12Speaker 1: is the obviously the key at this stage because you know,
- 6:16Speaker 1: we lost Oli Black last year, didn't we in a
- 6:18Speaker 1: preseason for about this sort of this sort of stage
- 6:21Speaker 1: And that put him back a little bit. But yeah,
- 6:27Speaker 1: it was it really wasn't great at all. I don't
- 6:31Speaker 1: know something fundamentally with missing I felt on there was
- 6:36Speaker 1: no energy, was there?
- 6:37Speaker 2: There were positives. I think johnickin day getting forty five
- 6:39Speaker 2: in he looks like he's going to be a handful
- 6:41Speaker 2: for a level I think this season.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Obviously a very big man. He is a big lump
- 6:45Speaker 1: and he's he's got for a big man, he's got
- 6:48Speaker 1: a good first touch. Yeah, I will say that. I
- 6:51Speaker 1: mean that that we used to having Jay Hutchinson up there.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Obviously he's now gone to National League Tamworth and good
- 6:59Speaker 1: luck to him. But I was talking to someone actually
- 7:03Speaker 1: yesterday and were saying about him going and he said, well,
- 7:08Speaker 1: the amount of times that picks set him up on
- 7:11Speaker 1: you know, he probably missed five times the amount of
- 7:16Speaker 1: goals he actually scored, which you know, pick set up
- 7:19Speaker 1: for him. So he wasn't too worried that we wouldn't
- 7:22Speaker 1: have Jay Kutchinson this year. But I said, you know,
- 7:25Speaker 1: we've still got to replace Jake Hutchinson and he's very
- 7:28Speaker 1: very hard to replace. You know, all those goals. You
- 7:32Speaker 1: don't become the Golden Boot winner for nothing.
- 7:34Speaker 2: No, I think again, there's obviously got that pedigree of scorer.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And obviously a League one, League two level.
- 7:39Speaker 2: He's got over one hundred NFL goals, But he's a
- 7:41Speaker 2: different type of center forward.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Isn't here exactly. It's going to take a while for it. Yeah,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and we've got to play obviously to his strengths. We're
- 7:49Speaker 1: not going to stick him out on the right wing
- 7:50Speaker 1: and expecting to run past defenders, are we. So you
- 7:54Speaker 1: know he's not that type of player. But you know
- 7:57Speaker 1: Danel Thomas, who you know last year it was a
- 8:00Speaker 1: massive plus I feel for folks and the Victor signed
- 8:04Speaker 1: it from pre season and went on to have a
- 8:08Speaker 1: really good season. A lot depends, I think on the
- 8:11Speaker 1: successful folks in this season. On tow Thomas, I think,
- 8:14Speaker 1: you know, a lot of the press goes to Joe Piggott,
- 8:19Speaker 1: but he's he's running and his foresight is it's just
- 8:23Speaker 1: as good as Pigot.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I think, I think Tuesday as well, And it almost
- 8:27Speaker 2: sets up the beauty of preseason. Obviously, Danell came in
- 8:29Speaker 2: last season as a child is down at high for
- 8:31Speaker 2: that first game and he played two or three and
- 8:33Speaker 2: then obviously we signed him and liked him, and there's
- 8:36Speaker 2: that Childie is fifteen at the moment. He's sort of
- 8:39Speaker 2: following a similar progression now.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And we both said, you know, he's been he's been
- 8:45Speaker 1: the great highlights so far of the preseason, and he
- 8:49Speaker 1: was the only player that really looked as if he
- 8:53Speaker 1: wanted it on Tuesday. Yeah, it was just a very
- 8:55Speaker 1: flat performance, wasn't it.
- 8:56Speaker 2: The other notable one that has surprised me in pre season.
- 8:59Speaker 2: He's young ready Francis. Obviously he's come through Charlton Academy.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I've been him every time I've watched him this preseason.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I've been very, very impressed with the.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Work right off the ball, the quality on the ball,
- 9:10Speaker 2: and I actually think when across the three games I've
- 9:13Speaker 2: watched so far this preseason, he's been the best partner
- 9:16Speaker 2: I've seen to Joe Piggot in terms of the qualities
- 9:19Speaker 2: they both have which compliment each other. It's very similar
- 9:22Speaker 2: to obviously pick at Hutchison last season and of.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Course he's got you fully the only thing I will say,
- 9:28Speaker 1: but he had a couple of one on ones, didn't
- 9:32Speaker 1: he He didn't quite managed to put the ball in
- 9:35Speaker 1: the back of the net. But you know, you've got
- 9:36Speaker 1: to get in them positions to, you know, to score,
- 9:41Speaker 1: and he did get in the positions, but he didn't
- 9:42Speaker 1: quite manage to put the ball in the back of
- 9:44Speaker 1: the onion basket. So if I was to be critical,
- 9:48Speaker 1: that would be the only criticisms that he didn't score.
- 9:52Speaker 1: But yeah, I again, I hear what you say. I
- 9:55Speaker 1: think he's you know, whether or not here's actually signed forms,
- 10:00Speaker 1: I don't know. But what about the.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Other sign in two we got We've got Alejandro Michado
- 10:07Speaker 2: has been very very good.
- 10:08Speaker 1: I think he's Yeah, I think he's going to be special.
- 10:12Speaker 1: But where do we play him? This is yeah, where
- 10:14Speaker 1: do we play him? I mean there is there is
- 10:17Speaker 1: that We've got to fit him into that side because
- 10:19Speaker 1: he's quality.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I think if the leak kicks off to marriage, do
- 10:22Speaker 2: you know who you're playing in midfield out of the
- 10:23Speaker 2: four of him?
- 10:24Speaker 1: I don't think I do. I would like to put
- 10:28Speaker 1: him down as the first without doubt, because I think
- 10:30Speaker 1: going forward, I think he offers so much. Any scores goals,
- 10:34Speaker 1: some of them goals he's got in preseason. The one
- 10:36Speaker 1: that Aveley was exceptional. The one he got against Croydon
- 10:40Speaker 1: Athletic again was exceptional. Yeah, he looks, he looks good
- 10:46Speaker 1: and it is it's only pre season. Where do we
- 10:49Speaker 1: get him from Brentwood? Brentwood? I mean yeah, that's a
- 10:54Speaker 1: team that was very unfortunate not to get promotion last season.
- 10:56Speaker 2: With us goalkeeper, I think there's some competition will be
- 11:02Speaker 2: coming in for Obviously, you can name seven on the
- 11:05Speaker 2: bench now as well, which I think.
- 11:06Speaker 1: That's that will help. I think we do have to
- 11:08Speaker 1: have a backup goalkeeper. It would be stupid not to
- 11:13Speaker 1: With you know, seven substitutions. You need a goalkeeper surely.
- 11:17Speaker 2: But I also think from when we saw Ted this
- 11:20Speaker 2: time last season, I think the quality he's now showing
- 11:24Speaker 2: is so more, much more advanced to where it was agreed.
- 11:28Speaker 1: He's certainly come on leaps, leaps and bounds. Still, yeah,
- 11:33Speaker 1: he's still relatively young, he's going to he's still got
- 11:37Speaker 1: a lot to learn.
- 11:38Speaker 2: There was a lot of worry this time last year
- 11:40Speaker 2: about the command over his penalty area, which it's not
- 11:43Speaker 2: entirely alleviated, I don't think, but there's a lot more
- 11:46Speaker 2: confidence I think in the ground when Ted comes out.
- 11:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean when he does come out for the
- 11:50Speaker 1: ball nine times he does get it, and you know
- 11:53Speaker 1: you need a commanding goalkeeper, especially in this league. And
- 11:57Speaker 1: you're going to have some some very big players up
- 12:00Speaker 1: there for corners, somebody center halfs are going to be
- 12:03Speaker 1: like six foot six, and you know he's going to
- 12:05Speaker 1: have to really be on his metal.
- 12:10Speaker 2: The other thing that goes slightly unnoticed? Is his distribution
- 12:14Speaker 2: forself certainly as well. I think he's two assists last season, Yeah,
- 12:17Speaker 2: something like that. With his feet, he is exceptional.
- 12:21Speaker 1: And I think his distribution throw wise as well, it's yeah,
- 12:24Speaker 1: I mean I don't an eight ten at the moment.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I mean, I think, you know, there is a room
- 12:30Speaker 1: for improvement, but I think you know, going forward, he
- 12:34Speaker 1: probably will be the number one, but he does need
- 12:36Speaker 1: some competition. So what's his space I suppose, Yeah, I
- 12:41Speaker 1: think back back five, four or five. I think that's
- 12:44Speaker 1: near enough sealed.
- 12:46Speaker 2: I think the back five on paper should be leaps
- 12:50Speaker 2: and bounds.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Ahead of where it was last season.
- 12:52Speaker 2: We obviously not seen it Joe yet. I think more
- 12:55Speaker 2: set of brack three. We've not seen Locko, Fielding and
- 12:59Speaker 2: Quick play a lot of games together, but obviously free
- 13:02Speaker 2: exceptional center halfs in their own right, and you've got
- 13:04Speaker 2: Liam Smith to come into that as well.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean is pre season at the moment obviously
- 13:09Speaker 1: that you know they've got to try a few things out.
- 13:12Speaker 1: But I think this will probably be the last game
- 13:14Speaker 1: where Jay will probably drop and change. We haven't even
- 13:19Speaker 1: mentioned it today. We've we've got league Sorry, championship side
- 13:24Speaker 1: Charter and Athletic coming down. Not that he's going to
- 13:27Speaker 1: be their first eleven, but you know there might be
- 13:31Speaker 1: a sprinkling a couple of players. But yeah, we've got
- 13:33Speaker 1: Chart and Athletic at the Alkaline Stadium three pm kickoff
- 13:36Speaker 1: this afternoon. Get down there and watch the game. If not,
- 13:40Speaker 1: you can tune into Seaside Radio and listen to the
- 13:42Speaker 1: formatch commentary of that. But yeah, I mean we've got
- 13:47Speaker 1: We've got sholling Away next Saturday, followed by Sutton United
- 13:52Speaker 1: and then well In United and then the season starts.
- 13:55Speaker 1: So we've got after today, we've just got three more
- 13:57Speaker 1: preseason friendlies. What do you think he'll he'll be doing
- 14:00Speaker 1: the last three.
- 14:02Speaker 2: I think we're now starting to get into that territory
- 14:06Speaker 2: where results do matter a little bit, like we obviously
- 14:09Speaker 2: had the minutes and legs. I think you can see
- 14:12Speaker 2: the last few games the opposition gets better after shotting,
- 14:15Speaker 2: And yeah, I think we're now looking at more tactical
- 14:19Speaker 2: stuff about a lot of positional sense and the system
- 14:23Speaker 2: with folks that are trying to deploy. And I think
- 14:25Speaker 2: there may be a few sore ears at halftime if
- 14:28Speaker 2: it's not been got right.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you're think spot on there today. I
- 14:35Speaker 1: think it's going to just be a bit of a
- 14:38Speaker 1: likeness of all it's been the last few games, but
- 14:40Speaker 1: I think this will be the last time. I'm not
- 14:43Speaker 1: sure if there's any new faces coming in. Not mind
- 14:47Speaker 1: you last week Sam Quick when he came in and
- 14:50Speaker 1: wasn't expecting that one. He was just introduced on that day,
- 14:53Speaker 1: So he looked good though, I must admit I thought
- 14:58Speaker 1: he was. He was quality and I think he he's
- 15:01Speaker 1: probably the ideal replacement for Jolodnerron with Smith and Locko
- 15:08Speaker 1: as well. Isn't he very Yeah? He can. He can
- 15:11Speaker 1: play lots of different positions, which you know obviously you need.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And Ben Mason's he missed the first couple of games
- 15:17Speaker 1: through illness and now his his fitness is coming through
- 15:21Speaker 1: and I thought he had a fairy decent game on Tuesday. Yeah, Anyway,
- 15:28Speaker 1: were your hopes for the season.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I think the club would be disappointed with missing out
- 15:35Speaker 2: on the playoffs. I think obviously it's more teams getting
- 15:38Speaker 2: the playoffs and the National League after I think it
- 15:40Speaker 2: goes down to eight nine maybe something like that. There's
- 15:43Speaker 2: a lot of teams that make it, and I think
- 15:46Speaker 2: I think they'll be wanting to be up there. I
- 15:48Speaker 2: don't think they'll be going we need to be top four,
- 15:52Speaker 2: top five. I think there'll be a quiet confidence around
- 15:55Speaker 2: we can probably get in these playoffs parts.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I think if it goes a little bit pair shaped
- 16:01Speaker 1: at the start, obviously the whne he's there to you know,
- 16:06Speaker 1: buy somebody. I suppose you were really what we liked
- 16:11Speaker 1: last year. I mean we didn't get Joe pick It
- 16:13Speaker 1: in until about three or four games in, and he
- 16:15Speaker 1: didn't have a pre season. It took him a little
- 16:17Speaker 1: time to get going. So that's my only fear about
- 16:20Speaker 1: getting somebody in after pre season. But you know, time
- 16:25Speaker 1: will tell me. We've got long trips, the Talkie Western
- 16:28Speaker 1: super Mare Salisbury.
- 16:30Speaker 2: I think obviously folks and fans are going to be
- 16:32Speaker 2: delighted this season because they've got their Boxing day sorted
- 16:35Speaker 2: as well. And I'm amazed we've gone an hour without
- 16:37Speaker 2: mentioning it, to be honest.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Fifty eight minutes for those of you who don't know,
- 16:43Speaker 1: we have Dover Athletic at the Alkaline Stadium on Boxing Day.
- 16:48Speaker 1: That is going to be massive. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I think that's four thousand sellout.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously I don't know what the capacity is of
- 16:55Speaker 2: the Apoca line, but I think whatever it is, I
- 16:58Speaker 2: think it'll be sold out.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I giving it be more than four Boxing day. Yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 1: I think you. I think you You're spot on there,
- 17:05Speaker 1: I think, and I think the return will be just
- 17:08Speaker 1: as good as well. On it's Easter Monday. I think
- 17:11Speaker 1: we play them, yeah.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Probably non league foot wasn't definitely and.
- 17:17Speaker 1: We kick off in what is it three weeks today?
- 17:20Speaker 1: Three weeks today at home to Walton and Hersham. They
- 17:24Speaker 1: come up via the They won the division same as
- 17:27Speaker 1: we did last year. Of theirs was the Southern League Premier.
- 17:32Speaker 1: So yeah, two clubs that are never in the National
- 17:35Speaker 1: League South going head to head and then we get
- 17:37Speaker 1: a trip to Ebsfleet and then a trip to Mates
- 17:41Speaker 1: and two local derbies straight off.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Really a lot of local derbies this season. I'm looking
- 17:47Speaker 2: forward to the Maidstone, the Tunbridge to David trips as well.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I think I think they'll be it will all be good.
- 17:52Speaker 1: A little bit disappointed with the absolete one. Probably not
- 17:55Speaker 1: going to be able to commentate there, which is a
- 17:56Speaker 1: little bit a little bit annoying, But you know, if
- 18:00Speaker 1: that's what they do. If that's what they do, that's
- 18:03Speaker 1: what they do. We can't help that, and probably Dover
- 18:06Speaker 1: Athletics will probably be the same. We're not going to
- 18:09Speaker 1: preempt anything because we don't know yet, but hopefully we'll
